He sighed and set the tray on the floor in front of them then propped his arms up on his knees as he leaned his head back against the wall. She was clinging to the memory of that boy from ten years ago. Hoping that she could still find the same person in Codex now. Asher was dead and had been for a very long time, but maybe he could use that. "You know. I came down here because I don't want to see you turn up like other prisoners of war Rancor gets ahold of." He told her. "You've got to give me something. Help me help you sort of thing." He turned his head and gently nudged her with his elbow. "That guy that came in and drugged you? He's got the same pull that I do and if you don't talk to me then you'll have to talk to him. I wont be able to help you then as he pours vial after vial of his toxins into your bloodstream. He shuddered slightly at the thought.
Even after everything that had happened he was still trying to save her it seemed. When they were kids it was from embarrassment at the front of the class and now he was trying to pull her out of trouble that would probably lead to her death. "I've always had a knack for getting into trouble, it follows me where ever I go, but you?" He chuckled again. "I pulled your ass out of the fire so many times. That's one thing that you never got to see from Lila. She hated that I saved you so many times but made her do her presentations. She wouldn't speak to me for days at a time sometimes cause she would get a D or F when she expected me to simply pull her out of the fire when she didn't want to do the work." He frowned at the memories that surfaced. He hated recalling the pleasant memories. They caused nothing but pain.
"So let me help you one more time and not let Rancor get his slimy fingers on you. Trust me you don't want that." His voice took on a more concerned note as he spoke. She didn't even need to look at the little green light on the side of his head to know that he was telling the truth.

Riley was silent as she listened to him set the tray on the ground. This was it, this was where he would stop trying to help her and turn back to the mercenary violent approach. Though his words did not match what she expected. Asher had never done anything that she would expect. When he nudged her she looked to him with a confused expression. She sucked in a breath as he spoke of Rancor. She could tell how vile he was. The drug he’d used on her. She lifted her hand to her neck where he’d injected her, it was bruised and tender to the touch. Her eyes lowered as she looked away from him once again. Lila had fought with him about how he saved her? She was always prepared for her assignments, it was standing before an audience that made her uncomfortable. She was the shy smart girl. The girl that could have become a doctor or surgeon. But the attack on Varc led her to learn the art of war and become a rather good soldier. Top of her class in fact.
She looked to him, the frown, the concern in his voice. He was melting away at the walls that she’d built up over the years. Just looking at him and hearing his voice brought her back to before the attack. Riley bit her lower lip, contemplation in her eyes. “I...” She looked away from him again, she seemed to hold her breath as her stomach once again growled for food. Eventually Riley reached forward and grasped the glass of water and lifted it to her lips. She drank it quickly and set it down, dry as a desert. She leaned her head against the wall and let out a sigh. “Asher, if I am to answer any questions.” She began. “You have to contact my commander. If he thinks that our mission has been sabotaged you truly will have hundreds of Arcpool Guards at your doorstep.” She reached forward and ripped a piece of bread from the tray of food before she shoed away a rat. “I can tell you the codes to us if you haven’t already learned them.” She looked to him. “I hate you Asher.” She spoke with a bit of a quake in her voice before she lowered her eyes away from him. “Why do you always try to save me?” She shook her head. She’d fought with him back then, just as she was now. He did well leaning on her grasp of the boy he used to be. Her defense was melting away like butter to a hot knife.
Riley reached forward and ate another piece of food. “Tell me.” She spoke and looked to him. “If I am to ask a question for you to ask a question...” She paused a moment as she seemed to contemplate a good question. “What proof do you have of the Arcpool Guard being corrupt?” She searched his eyes. “Not stories. Proof.” She bit her lower lip. In a thousand years she never thought that she would be agreeing to a question and answer with one of the pirates. Though. If she could get him to trust her, perhaps she could get him to let down his guard. If he let down his guard she could have a better chance at escaping. “Now.” She ate a potato piece and looked to him a long moment. “What is it your commander wants you to ask me?”

Codex's lips turned up in a smile as he saw Riley finally concede to the food and drink he had brought to her. She even offered a way to hold off the supposed reinforcements that would be sent upon the failure of their mission. It would be a good tool to use against the Guard. He chuckled again though when she told him that she hated him. "That's fine. You can hate me. If that's what helps you rest and keeps you alive hate me with everything you have. I saved you because you were worth saving. You tried your best, did your work, and always strove to meet your parents expectations. I thought I'd be the one to show you a little mercy and bail you out every now and then. Lila didn't want to do the work, she wanted a cop-out, but you never expected it from me so I offer it freely. You're welcome." The punctuation to his statement was a staple of his. He was quick to give 'you're welcomes' when he thought he should be thanked and brushed if off if someone did offer him thanks. He had always been different like that.
"I'll give you all the proof you'll need for Arcpool's corruption as soon as I get you out of this cell. Which should be here in a few hours." He looked at his watch strapped to his wrist to check the time. "Bank notes, memos, and official documents showing trading and profit for those that should have no hand in the war." He had been compiling a lot of information on Arcpool's dealings over the years. Getting ready for a propaganda campaign that they would be helpless to resist as he invaded the entire planet's media systems. It was a large project that was taking even him a very long time to complete, but it would be plenty to convince someone like Riley that they weren't the savors that she imagined them to be.
Before asking any questions of her though he offered her the electrodes once more, holding them out in his hand in front of her. "Put these on and we'll begin. They're just sticky, no pain or discomfort really, Maybe a little itchy if I'm honest." He smiled at her as his own sensor was still the steady green color. Once she had put them on he cleared his throat and mentally turned on a recording device in the one implanted in his skull. "We want to know the attack plans that Arcpool has against the Delta base on Silea." Silea was a moon around one of the larger gas planets in the system. The pirates held control over it and it's mineral deposits but it wasn't a vital point in grand scheme of things. He wanted to know why Arcpool had such interest in it and since they had found several scouts in the area they knew an attack was soon to follow.

The line that Asher always used, you’re welcome. It brought back memories of their time in school. Riley gazed at him, her expression close to that of the past girl she used to be, she seemed almost mystified by him in that moment. Then again, Asher had always been a mystery to her. She’d never understood why he went out of his way to help her when she never asked for it. The bit about Lila? She knew Lila was upset with Asher for it, she’d told Riley over coffee before class several times. But, she wasn’t angry toward Riley, she was confused as to why Asher wouldn’t do the same for her. It made sense though, Lila truly didn’t want to do the work she thought all the projects were a waste of her time. The only projects she completed were her art projects. Those were something worth mentioning.
As Asher spoke of the information he was gathering against the guard Riley’s brows tucked together. She tore pieces off of a slice of bread and ate them slowly as she watched him. If this were all true. If she was to believe him. That would cause her entire world to come crashing down upon her. She began to wonder if the information he was finding was a hoax. Put out by the rebels to lure in others that didn’t believe in the good of the guard. But, if she was to get out of the cell, she had to go along with him, she couldn’t fight with him now. She was in no position to defend the guard, look where she’d ended up doing so.
Riley looked to the electrodes as he held them out to her. She took in a deep breath and reached forward to take them into her hands. The squishy sticky gel was cold against her temples as she pressed it against her skin. This made everything all the more real for her. She was committing every crime possible against Arcpool. She was working with the enemy hand in hand giving out information as if it was up for grabs on a platter of cookies. All because she was terrified of what Rancor would do, and even the expression Asher held upon his face caused her to fear the man that had injected her with the tranquilizer.
His question caught her off guard which was evident in the furrow of her brow as she looked to him. Riley turned and leaned against the wall, her knees tucked up against her chest, she was fully facing him now. She’d winced slightly as she moved her injured leg though her expression went back to that of almost concern. This was a large project that the Arcpool Guard had been dealing in. The commanders had been sending scouts over the last 6 months since they had located the base on Silea. Riley dropped her eyes from Asher as she took in a breath and let it out slowly. The light on the side of her head was flashing rapidly, though it was still illuminated green. She hugged her legs a bit more tightly to herself as she built up the courage to commit treason. Every fiber in her body told her not to do it, but what other choice did she have?
Riley lifted her eyes to Asher once again and she stared to him a long moment, she stared to the solid green light on his temple. “6 months ago Commander Vargos announced that we would be investigating an installment on Silea.” The light upon her head stopped flashing and turned a solid green at that point. “We were told to take pictures. To gather recordings, to document every possible thing that we could. Some of our soldiers were even placed as civilians of the planet with fake identification cards. They were told to work in the mines and to get proper footage of the workings beneath the surface.” She paused again and took in a deep breath. “Commander Vargos never told us exactly what we were looking for, or why. He simply sent us into the dark with a vague mission. We did as we were told and before I knew it we were sent with leather packs to deliver to those on the surface.” Riley searched Asher’s eyes a moment longer.
She didn’t want to tell the next bit of information. It was evident on her expression. This would set off all the red flags, this would cause the alarm to sound. “I did some digging to find out what was in those packages that we delivered. I asked my commanding officer and I was shot down. They didn’t want us to know. Only the leading officers were to know what the guard had planned for Silea. The packs contain a highly lethal nerve agent. There are enough packs that we delivered to Silea to wipe out the entire population on that moon.” Riley hugged her legs a bit more tightly to herself. The Varcpool Guard very well could be just as corrupt as Asher wanted her to believe. Or understand might be the better word. “The deposits are rich in Isotome. That is what our men on the ground discovered. That is the key component to fuel for your vessels, your energy plants….it is what is keeping your group functioning. By detonating the chemical bombs Varcpool will gain control of Silea...the supply from that moon will be cut off and close to ten thousand people will be dead. To include the innocent civilians of Silea.” Her eyes drifted away from him then. Saying it out-loud. Telling the enemy the plans. She never thought she would betray the guard in such a fashion. Then again saying it out-loud also reminded her of the lives of the men and women that had been sent to the surface to work undercover. Their lives would be lost and they had no idea what was coming. “Is that enough information?” She asked softly, as she looked back to him with a defeated gaze.

Codex watched the light flashing on the side of her head out of the corner of her eye, but his main focus was on her expressions as she listened to his inquiry and thought about her response. It was evident that she hadn't been expecting such a question. Wondering what the Arcpool Guard was going to do with a small mining moon rather than wondering what sort of plan of attack they might have for the main base after her disappearance. When he heard her answer though his own brow furrowed in disbelief. They would gas an entire planet to strike out against their enemy? There were whole families on that planet and only a small portion of them were soldiers. Guards to help against normal attacks from animals or natural disasters. Most of them had never seen combat outside of that, and Arcpool was going to decimate the entire population? And she said they were the monsters...
When she asked if the information was enough his smile had faded and his gaze had dropped a bit as his eyes grew a bit distant while he processed the information. "They're going to gas the entire planet because they perceive that we gather it is out main fuel source?" He scoffed and lifted his hand to touch the metal implant in his head and waited a moment as if something was loading. Then when it finished he looked back up to Riley and sighed. "For as much as you praising the Guard you know about something like this and still hold them in high regards?" He shook his head in disbelief. "My organization has never even attempted such an act of cruelty on the citizens of Arcpool, and trust me I would know."
Getting up from his seated position next to Riley he made his way over to the table and picked up the medical kit. "Well, I'm going to try and prevent that. Safe a few thousand innocent lives, and I'll also get you into some more agreeable quarters." He walked back over to her where she sat against the wall and crouched down in front of her. "Meanwhile let me help you with that leg if you're not going to do it yourself." All sense of joking and joviality was gone from his tone and his expression was flat.

Riley looked away from Asher, she could feel the anger fuming from him. She took in a breath as she watched him. She took in his movements, his eyes. She didn’t speak as he seemed to scold her. She merely watched him in silence. She had just uncovered the truth about Silea just two days before she shipped out on this mission. She was still processing the information in all honesty. She’d spoken to Marcus about it, but of course he didn’t believe her. He didn’t believe that Arcpool would be so cruel. Neither did she, but she’d found the documents. The original blueprints of the mission. She nearly got caught in doing so.
Riley reached forward and grasped the medical kit. “Don’t trouble yourself with me, Asher.” She spoke as she lowered her leg, she grit her teeth to the stiffness that the muscle had gained. The burn that she felt with each movement of the muscle that was torn from the bullet’s impact with her flesh. “Don’t think that I didn’t plan to do something to stop it.” She spoke then as she unzipped the medical bag. “I know the day and the time that they are planning to carry out the attack.” She looked to him a long moment. “The Arcpool Guard is not to blame for this, it is the leaders, the government. Us?” She paused and scoffed slightly. “Unfortunately I am placed into dangerous situations by the government. But it is not my commander that says to pull the trigger. It is our leadership.” She looked down to her leg then and began working to clean it with the proper materials now. She grit her teeth as she poured saline over the wound and it ran in an orange fluid from the rip in her flesh.
“Of all things, Asher.” She paused and leaned her head against the wall. “Of all things for you to think that I am okay with the plans. Don’t you remember?” She gave a slight laugh. “Don’t you remember in class when the dove flew into the window? Who was it that ran outside and saved the bird?” She looked to him with a pain filled smile. “Me. I was going to be a doctor before everything happened. I wanted to help people not kill them. Yet this war has everyone in its grasp, it has the control.” She closed her eyes then. “Don’t think that I wouldn’t have stopped the attack. Enemy or not. No one deserves to die like that.” She returned her attention back to the medical bag as she pulled a few things out to continue cleaning the wound. The pain made her dizzy. After a few seconds of cleaning the wound she leaned her head back against the wall again, her hands were shaking. Usually she didn’t have such trouble. She’d suffered injuries far worse before in the heat of battle. Riley closed her eyes once again.

Codex didn't seemed convinced as she described the possibility of her trying to stop the attack on Silea, but offered a half smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "You were always one to try and look on the brighter side of things. Cheer people up when they're down and have grande ambitions no matter how impossible they seemed." He paused for a moment as his smile faded once more. "Unfortunately it doesn't work like that. You can't expect to pull something like this off by yourself. The cogs of the war are already turning and I'm afraid that your little wrench wont be enough to stop that machine." While she had taken the medical kit from him and began to work on the wound on her own, obviously struggling, he remained crouched down in front of her.
"And you're still stubborn as ever." When she stopped and leaned her head back against the wall he reached forward and took the kit from her. He wasn't a medic but he was skilled enough on being able to patch up wounds in the field or situations like this. "I'll take care of it though." He knew her leg was hurting quite a bit, that was evident in the way her hands had started to shake, so he worked quickly in order to prevent the pain from dragging on more than it needed to. When he finished he re-wrapped her leg with the clean gauze. "There, now finish your meal and I'll be back in just a little while." He told her and placed his hands on his knees to push himself back up to his feet.
He walked and tossed the medical kit on the table once more, in case she needed it for something else, and then pressed the code in order to unlock the door and let himself out. He closed and locked the door behind him as well, ensuring that it was secure, and then turned to head down the hallway without saying another word.
***
Back in his office, a command center in every right, he began to deliver information and send instructions in order to help prevent the attack on Silea. He knew there would be stops to production so they could search areas and clear inventory that had been taken in, but it would be worth it in the end. The last thing he did was download all the information that he had gathered on Arcpool's corruption to show Riley. He still had to uphold his end of the deal after all. Then there was the promise of getting her different quarters. That one took some strings being pulled but he actually managed to get the room next door to his cleared out, cleaned and set up as a bedroom. It was a storage room but would work for what he needed it, and he also had to set up a schedule of armed guards to remain posted outside the door in addition to a lock being installed that they could keep her contained. Hopefully these would be temporary measures. He was hoping that he could convert Riley and that she would stay of her own free will. Why he needed her to want to stick around, or even entertained the idea, was still a bit of a mystery to him. Perhaps he still held onto the past more than he was willing to admit.
Eventually a contingent of armed guards came to Riley's cell to collect her and escort her to the room he had prepared for her. They all grumbled about having to help someone from Arcpool, and muttered curses under their breath, but they performed their duty and then Codex also met them at the room. He was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed when they entered and he gave a nod to the soldiers before they left him alone with Riley and posted up outside of the door. "What do you think? Better than the cell?"

Riley opened her eyes to look at him as he began working on her leg. Though as soon as he touched it she grit her teeth and closed her eyes again. “You’d be surprised what I am capable of.” She muttered as she clenched her fists. She didn’t speak another word as he left the cell. Her body was exhausted. Between the flight in and traversing the planet to getting captured she hadn’t had any real rest. She pulled her knees back to her chest and lay her head forward on her arms, soon enough Riley had slipped into a dreamless slumber.
Riley didn’t hear the keypad as someone punched in the code. She was in such a deep sleep that the door opened and locked back into place and she didn’t even budge. Footsteps clicked across the room and a chuckle came from the mouth of the soldier whom had entered the cell. “All patched up then?” His voice carried through the empty damp room.
Riley jolted awake to find herself looking up to Rancor. She took in quick breaths, had Asher lied to her? She scrambled to her feet as Rancor waltzed across the room toward her. Her leg felt better, but she still was in no condition to fight or run. “What do you want?” Riley questioned her eyes never left him.
Rancor’s lips curved up into a wicked smile as he stepped forward. “I was simply checking on our VIP prisoner.” He chuckled before he moved forward swiftly and pinned her against the wall. His face was inches from hers. “Seeing if you were settling in well.” He glanced to the silver platter of food. “It seems you have.”
Riley moved her arm and jabbed him in the side with her elbow before she limped to the side, her hands were balled into fists, she was prepared to fight him. “There isn’t much settling to do.” She moved as he did, matching his paces, though each step with her right leg was much smaller than his. Riley blocked him as he reached forward to grab her. She ducked beneath one of his punches though that put her in a vulnerable position. Rancor grasped her about her waist and slammed her harshly to the wall his hands gripped onto her wrists as he stared into her eyes. Riley fought against him, she even screamed at one point before she spat in his face.
Rancor growled as he kept her pinned. “I need to know everything you know about Arcpool, Lieutenant.” He smirked as he noticed the electrodes on her temples. “So that’s what his plan is?” He snickered. “Butter you up with food and water and get you to talk?” He laughed as he held her wrists with one of his hands and he reached to his thigh to pull his small injection gun. “He doesn’t want my help but our commanders have requested it.” He grinned as she tried to escape his grasp. “I just whipped up a little something for you, should help you to be more cooperative with Codex.”
“Get off!” Riley kneed him harshly and managed to break a hand free. She gripped onto his forearm that held the gun.
Rancor slammed her against the wall and kneed her in the abdomen before he shoved her to her back and he pinned her arms to her sides with his legs. “You fight too much for someone in your situation. You really think that the Arcpool Guard is going to save you? Or anyone for that matter. They don’t care about a soul, only the money that they receive from the war.” Rancor held his hand over Riley’s mouth to silence her screams as he pressed the gun to her neck and injected a strange milky liquid. He held her like this for several minutes until Riley’s eyes rolled back slightly and her breathing slowed, next her body fell limp. “There you are.” He chuckled as he stood. He looked about the room and took in a breath, “Let’s see.” He opened the medical kit and pulled out a few vials of the cleaning agents that were supplied in the kit. He mixed them together and soaked a piece of gauze with them before he placed it into Riley’s hand. It would look like she tried to kill herself with the chemicals which would take all eyes off of him. He knew very well the Codex would throw a fit if he knew that the commanders had ordered Rancor to inject the girl with one of his serums. He stood over her a moment with his arms crossed before he slipped from the cell.
**
As the guards entered the cell the shuffling of their feet caused Riley’s eyes to open. Her vision was a blurry haze. “Would you look at this.” One of the guards grabbed the gauze from her hand. “That plan didn’t pan out for you did it?” He looked to the empty vials of chemical sitting upon the table. “You’re still breathing.” He scoffed. “Too bad.” He nodded to the other guards whom lifted Riley to her feet.
“What...” Riley’s voice echoed in her head. “Where are we….going?” She blinked her eyes several times.
“You get a fancy suite next to Codex, Lieutenant.” One of the soldiers responded. “Who knows why you deserve that, you’re Arcpool Guard scum.” He spat the words as he held her arm around his shoulders to keep her on her feet.
Riley stumbled forward with their help. The longer she was awake the more she was able to control her movements. It was a strange feeling of almost drunkenness. Riley was walking on her own by the time they had gotten her to the other side of the complex. Though the limp remained. She glanced around to see many soldiers bustling about some were moving with a sense of urgency, others seemed to be on a Sunday stroll. As they entered her new room Riley paused in the center of the room where the soldiers had left her. She turned and looked to Codex with a dazed expression. She couldn’t remember Rancor attacking her. That was part of his trick. Most couldn’t remember the injections. Riley sat down on the edge of the bed. She looked about the room, there was a desk with a few books, a bed, a dresser. It was like a college dorm, minus the loud noises. No this room was silent. “This is much better than the dungeon.” She spoke as her hazel eyes found their way to Codex once more.
One of the soldiers stepped into the room. “Codex.” He spoke and nodded to him. “You should know, we found this.” He pulled up an image on a screen of Riley passed out on the floor with the gauze in her hands. He flipped to the next image of the bottles she’d mixed. “I wouldn’t leave anything in here that she could try that again with.” He gave a short nod before he left the room.
“Try what?” Riley questioned her expression full of confusion. The world around her still felt as though it was in a fog. "Asher..." Riley stood and looked to him.

As soon as Riley entered the room Codex could tell something was off. Her stare wasn't as focused and the way she moved seemed.. sluggish. Codex's brow furrowed as his eyes looked over her body. She was still covered in dirt, blood and grim. That was expect though. What was off putting was that it seemed like her muscles were a little slack, like she had just woken up from a deep sleep. Even if she had fallen asleep she would have done so lightly to remain at the ready in case something happened.
When the soldier who had brought her in started to speak Codex looked away and to the small monitor showing the image of Riley unconscious and with a bit of cloth in her hand. He hadn't left anything like that behind. He was sure of it. Nothing that she could have done significant damage with. So many red flags went up in Codex's mind but he couldn't voice them, not now. So he simply gave a sigh and nodded to the soldier. "Thank you. You're free to return to your regular duties." Codex told him and the man retracted his arm and gave a solute to Codex before turning to walk out of the room and closing the door behind him. "Seems you thought you found another way out of that cell?" He asked Riley with a curious tone of his own. "I'm not sure where you got the chemicals in order to perform a botched suicide attempt but I'm impressed you're still alive none the less. Do I need to have you tied to your bed every night in order to make sure you'll still be breathing in the morning?"
He sighed and rubbed the back of his head. "Seems this is going to be a bit more of a pain than I thought it was going to be." He had to do something to ensure he could get the information he needed and keep Riley alive at the same time. This was going to get messy rather quickly if Rancor had gotten involved. That slimy man liked to get his claws into everyone at some point and Codex wanted to keep him as far away as possible.

Riley watched Codex, the look of concern that washed over his face. Or was that disappointment? Her attention still wasn’t at its best. She drew her brows together to his question, her arms crossed over her body and she shivered slightly. “Another way? Asher what are you talking about?” She questioned quickly, the light on the side of her temple remained a constant green. His next words caused her to step back and sit on the edge of the bed once again as she racked her mind for the memory. “I...” She shook her head. Of course she’d been trained in many ways to carry out such an attempt in the case she was in the hands of the enemy...but she hadn’t done such a thing.
Riley shook her head, “No Asher. You don’t need to do that.” She looked about the room again her body felt so numb. She felt as though she had been sleeping for hours in her heaviest state. She looked to her dirty arms as she tried to remember. Her mind was filled with such a thick fog that she could barely even remember her conversation that she’d had with Asher before Rancor had injected her with his serum.
Another knock came from the door and it pushed open. A tall slender man walked into the room. He looked to Asher and then to Riley. “What information have you gotten me?” He questioned as he moved forward. “What good does it do to bring our captive here? Were the cells not good enough for you Lieutenant?” This man was one of the leading Commanders of the base. He was the one that called Rancor to inject Riley. He didn’t care about keeping her safe so long as it got results. That was his end all goal.
Riley looked to the man with the same drawn out stare. “To be honest the cells were incredibly damp and rats crawled everywhere...The food was nothing short of garbage that must have been blended with sewage water.” The words poured from her mouth and then she fell silent. The green light flickered on the side of her head as her mind raced. “I...” She blinked a few times.
The commander chuckled slightly. “Well you are a prisoner Lieutenant. What did you expect?” He smirked as he looked to Codex. “Why don’t you get on with her questioning so we can dispose of her?” He barked the order before he stepped to the door. “I’ll be awaiting your answers Codex. The Silea information is valuable, but...not what I asked you to gather.” He looked to him a moment before he slipped from the room.
Riley was staring to the grit on her hands as she took in small quick breaths. She couldn’t make out why she’d said the things she said. The light continued to flicker on the side of her head. “Asher.” She spoke and looked up to him. “I...” She drew her brows together and closed her eyes, she couldn’t make sense of how she felt, she couldn’t make the words to convey it to him. She rubbed at the grit on her arms and sighed softly. “Do you have a shower?” She asked him after several seconds of silence. “I feel like one of the dungeon rats...” She spoke as she looked up to him from where she sat on the edge of the bed. Her body felt weak, her muscles felt like rubber with each movement.

Codex knew he didn't need to tie her down to the bed while he slept. If she was going to kill herself she would have tried as much already in some form or fashion. Even if it was throwing herself on him or another guard to try and get them to shoot her. No, she had help getting into this particular state of mind. When the door opened and the commander entered Codex stood up straight and gave a short salute to the man. "Sometimes the brutal method doesn't get you as far as it might under more amicable circumstances." He responded to the commander when he asked why Riley had been brought here rather than being kept in the cells. Though Riley's quick response also set Codex back just a touch. She had no filter and that was a problem.
When the commander slipped back out of the room Codex sighed and relaxed once more. There were more issues popping up much more quickly than he had expected. There had to be more to the intel they were wanting to extract from Riley. He wasn't sure what that was yet but there was no reason to push for results so quickly if they had time to try and get more sensitive information out of her. "Yes, I have a shower but let me look at something first." He told her and crossed the room to stand directly in front of her and grabbed her wrists firmly but not hard enough to hurt. His eyes scanned over her hands, forearms, biceps and then along her shoulders. He had to stoop down slightly in order to get a good look, and then when he examined her neck by turning her face side to side he finally found what he was looking for. "Listen to me very carefully. Do not, under any circumstances call me Asher in front of the commander. Call me Codex and that's it. Trust me your life will be much shorter if he thinks we're actually friends." Codex would be in a world of trouble as well, if not at the business end of a rifle himself, if he found out about their past. "Also, good ole Rancor drugged you up with something. You're still breathing and walking on your own though so I wouldn't worry to much about it and just wait till it wears off." His dark, yet soft brown eyes looked to Riley with an expression of concern as he spoke.
"Also, I need you to give me the access codes and passwords to the base at Varc. I need to be able to fly a ship into there with no suspicion." He watched to make sure that the light on the side of Riley's head remained green while he waited for an answer. "Once you tell me I'll let you shower and sleep."

Riley watched Codex carefully when he gripped her wrists she’d flinched slightly. “What are you doing?” She questioned him as he looked her over. She had a few bruises, but nothing remarkable. Then when he spoke of Rancor she drew her brows together. It made sense why she felt this way. Everything seemed to make sense in that moment. The flickering light on the side of her temple continued to flash as she nodded. “Right...got it...” She spoke when he ordered her only to call him Codex. She would have to focus on that. He was Asher to her and always had been. Calling him Asher made him that much more relatable for her. It helped her reason with herself for giving him answers.
Though as he asked for the access codes and passwords Riley simply nodded. “Of course.” She spoke, her eyes found his once again. “The base at Varc is one of the more buffered security systems, especially after the attack that happened there 10 years ago. The Arcpool Guard boosted the security protocol and implemented many changes in the system. That is where the vessel I was on was supposed to return to actually.” She noted, she took in a quick breath and her eyes fluttered slightly. The light on the side of her head continued to flicker quickly. “Incoming vessels must announce entrance into the orbit of Arcpool, state the vessel name and designation. The traffic control officer will send a request to the vessel for the Varc Base passcode. It is 1284529.” She spoke the words smoothly as if she was speaking to another Arcpool Soldier. Her nervousness was gone. Whatever Rancor had given her took away any emotion to the information she held it seemed. “Once you have given that code the system with authorize you to land.” She looked to him, “Asher...” She shook her head then. “Codex.” She drew her brows together. “Access into the base from there is rather simple. If you have a key card or bio scan access.” She watched him. “My pack had a key card in it...unless it was destroyed it would be more valuable than any access code within the base. You wouldn’t need any codes with my card because I am an officer.” She shook her head then, it was clear that the information was just pouring out of her.
Riley closed her eyes a moment, trying to focus. “What access are you looking to gain?” She questioned then as she looked to him. All of her questions that she wanted to ask to gain information from him, the question for a question stance...her care for that was gone it seemed. The protected information seemed nothing more than a quick update to be discussed over a short business meeting. Riley watched him a moment, “The base is a complex maze of access points.” She added as she searched her eyes. “It would be helpful to know where you are going.”
