"Declarations of War"
Mazikeen of the Angmar Rangers Mazikeen watched Rania head out to meet the mages at the great tree, then turned towards Nicholas and Aela. “Nicholas, I will bring you to our blacksmiths to tend to your gear. Aela I am sure you have plenty to do yet. I think we will be needing quite a bit of your acid reduction solution.” The ranger grimaced, her mind racing with thoughts of demonic injuries. The young cleric nodded and smiled, “I will meet up with you guys later!” Aela turned towards her home, shutting the door softly behind her. The ranger nodded to Nicholas, and walked towards the town square. “Our forge is near the training grounds, Sayer is one of our most renowned smiths. He will mend your equipment in no time.” Mazikeen led the human past the tree of Angmar, glancing at Rania, who seemed to be deep in conversation with four of the village’s mages. The ranger raised a brow in curiosity, but kept moving, not wanting to disturb the high elf. As they turned onto the stone street leading to the grounds, Mazikeen’s ears twitched to the sounds of the forge- hammering, grinding, and treating of Elven steel. As the two neared the forge, a wave of intense heat washed over their skin from the roaring fires. The large stone building was surrounded by a gate, allowing the smiths to work outdoors for fresh air. Three wood elves slaved away, one tempering fresh blades to the left, another to the right tending to a large fire with ore smelting in the coals. A distinguished smith stood towards the middle of a yard, examining various blades spread out on a table in front of him. Sayer was uncharacteristically muscular for a wood elf, his frame a direct result of many years of hard labor crafting weapons. He shouted a greeting towards Mazikeen as they waited out front, welcoming the two inside the short stone gate. Sayer dusted grit off of his black apron, extending a hand for Nicholas to shake. “So this is the newcomer I have been hearing of! Welcome!” The robust wood elf bowed his head slightly, eyeing Nicholas’s armor. “I have yet to work on raiment from Malroc, I am assuming that is why you have made your way to my forge,” Sayer mused. Mazikeen nodded, “We need his armor repaired as soon as you are able, especially if we are expecting an assault soon.” The dark-haired wood elf nodded, glancing around the forge yard while wiping the sweat from his brow. “We were able to work through the guard’s repairs already since you and that Council maiden warned the city of trouble a few days ago.” The blacksmith nodded to Mazikeen. Sayer gestured to the table in front of him, “I have been able to spend this extra time on new weapon designs- with demons in mind.” The master smith picked up a dagger from the table, holding it out in front of him for Mazikeen and Nicholas to inspect. The Elven dagger looked like many Mazikeen had seen before, except this one had a long, narrow gap in the middle of the blade, extending outwards towards the tip. Sayer pointed to the space in the middle of the blade, his voice unable to hide his excitement. “I had inspiration from the weapon enchantments provided by miss Rania yesterday. If this dagger was infused with ice magic, the center would fill with that ice. My hope is that if it was plunged into a demon, the blow would be that much more potent since the blade will be predominantly made of that magic, with the support of Elven steel.” Sayer grinned, clearly proud with his work. “I would love to be able to get these permanently enchanted in the near future, but for now all I could ask of the village’s mages was a temporary one. I would be honored if you two would take one, it might come in handy. I have six made that are ready for use, take three of them for yourselves and your high elf friend- since she gave me the idea in the first place.” Sayer picked up three of the blades, handing two to Nicholas and one to Mazikeen. The ranger bowed her head, thanking the master blacksmith. She examined the dagger, just barely making out a light blue tint to the steel, courtesy of the enchantment. Mazikeen affixed the dagger onto her belt, smiling gratefully at Sayer. Crafting new weapons clearly brought the smith joy, as he spoke more with Nicholas about some of the other blades on the table. The human drew his sword for Sayer to examine, and gestured to the places where his armor was compromised. The wood elf stroked his chin, “These repairs should not take me long. I would say about two hours and your equipment will be good as new.” The two thanked Sayer, and Mazikeen waited as Nicholas passed over the items he needed repaired. When he was finished, the ranger lead the human to a bench across the street where they could see both the forge and the training grounds. Mazikeen loved this spot, as she was able to watch her comrades spar and train in the grounds while listening to the smiths work. The ranger pulled open her satchel and offered Nicholas some bread leftover from yesterday, knowing he must be hungry. They ate and made casual conversation, Mazikeen asked some questions about life as a monster-hunter. The ranger then filled Nicholas in on their current plan to head off the demon invasion. “Ganalon wants us to first prioritize protecting the city before we go out and seek the demon portal. Since we have no idea how large of a force they have amassed, leaving the city unprotected is out of the question.” Mazikeen watched one of her fellow rangers fire a few shots on a target as she spoke, the arrows landing dead center. “We will have all of our forces here in Valendra for the assault. Most of our rangers will be stationed on the wall or in the watchtowers, with the beastmasters and warriors on the ground either at the front gate or within the city itself. I believe Aroth wants the mages to be fairly spread out among the city. Once we have fended off the attack and their forces are depleted, that’s when we will split, and escort Rania to the portal’s location.” Mazikeen turned her head to Nicholas, leaning back on the bench. “The Captain is hoping that after we have secured the city, that is when they will have the least amount of forces, and thus would be the safest time to destroy the portal. You will have to lead the group heading to the portal’s location since you are the only one that has seen it.” Mazikeen rested a hand on Nicholas’s shoulder. “If I make it through the initial assault without severe injury, I will come with you to the portal. I want to see this threat extinguished.” ------------------------------------------------ Both of their heads turned at Sayer’s shout, letting them know he was finished. They headed back over to the forge, and the blacksmith gestured to Nicholas’s repaired equipment on the table. “I have to bestow credit where credit is due, Malroc smiths aren’t half bad!” Sayer grinned, walking over to help Nicholas into his armor. “This should do it.” The wood elf reached for the human’s sword on the table. “This greatsword is well crafted, but I could do better. If we both survive this assault- I’ll make you one!” Sayer chuckled, handing Nicholas his mended sword. Mazikeen rolled her eyes at the smith’s odd sense of humor, then smiled. “Thank you again for your time.” The ranger gave him a bow. The blacksmith clapped them both on the shoulder, “Get back to me on those weapons, I need to know if it’s worth crafting more.” They thanked Sayer again, and headed out to go find Rania. As they walked back through the square, Mazikeen called out to the high elf who was up ahead on the stone street. Catching up to her, Mazikeen bowed her head slightly in greeting. “I hope your planning with the mages went well.” She gestured to Nicholas, “I think we have our new companion squared away. There isn’t much else to do but wait.” The trio started walking back towards Aela’s house near the front gate. It was early evening as they neared the young cleric’s home, the sun just starting to touch the tree line. Mazikeen was about to knock on Aela’s door when they heard a shout from a ranger on the wall. The wood elf turned to Rania and Nicholas, “C’mon!” She rushed to the inner edge of the city to a ladder built into the stone wall near the front gate. Mazikeen climbed up quickly, her two companions right behind her. As they reached the top, Ganalon was standing next to the ranger who called out the warning, both of their eyes fixated on something in the distance. The trio followed their gaze to the forest towards the north. Against the horizon, a menacing black cloud hovered above the trees in the distance. Mazikeen squinted, shading her eyes with her hand. As they all watched, the black cloud drew closer, and soon enough, they were able to make out the individual forms of flying demons. Fear gripped the ranger’s heart. She looked to Rania and Nicholas- their presence provided her courage. At Ganalon’s signal, the ranger blew the Valendran horn- one long, loud call. Shouts and screams erupted from in the city as civilians rushed to the barrack cellars in a panic. Ganalon turned, calling out as the guard started to assemble near the gate. “Everyone, to your stations at once! This is it! Look after each other, work together. We will not let our city fall!” Ganalon turned and made his way down the ladder to the front gate where the other warriors were gathering. Mazikeen’s heart pounded as she made her way to the right, taking an empty spot along the wall. She looked around frantically, losing track of where Rania and Nicholas had gone in the frenzy. I am sure they will find a good position, she thought to herself. Mazikeen’s gaze snapped down to the front gate as the howling of wolves erupted in the air. Layla, Tared and the rest of the beastmasters were speckled among the crowd of warriors, their loyal companions full of energy and angst. Mazikeen turned, looking back towards the tree of Angmar, where her eyesight could just make out three figures at the base of the large trunk. Aroth stood there with two of the other mages, in position, and the ranger knew that they would stay there to protect the tree at all costs. Mazikeen’s eyes widened for a moment. Where was Aela? The ranger could not spot her anywhere- there wasn’t enough time to find her. She had to trust that she would be okay. For a brief moment, Faerin’s head turned from down at the gate and he locked eyes with Mazikeen. She sucked in a breath, and nodded to him. They both looked to the forest at the sound of trees rustling. Mazikeen watched the tips of the trees sway as a large ground force tore their way through the forest. As the black cloud drew nearer, horrible screeches filled the air, and some of the wood elves covered their ears. A large portion of the guard answered the demon cries with their own declarations of war, shouting and calling out into the horizon. Mazikeen let the voices of her people provide her some resolve. The time had come, she thought. The fate of their city would be decided in the next few hours. Mazikeen thought of her new friends, of Rania and Nicholas. However brief their interactions were, she felt a connection with them that she could not explain. She prayed they would be okay. The ranger snapped out of her thoughts as Ganalon shouted. “Rangers, take your aim!” The Angmar rangers atop the wall all drew their longbows, including Mazikeen. In unison, the rangers nocked their arrows, aiming slightly above the black mob of demons speeding through the air towards the city. Time seemed to slow down, and the screeches and cries from both demons and elves faded. Mazikeen held her breath. For a long moment, the rangers held still. “Fire!” A volley of Elven arrows flew towards the demon horde. The Battle of Valendra had begun.

Nicholas followed Mazikeen through the city scape - his eyes falling upon the structures. He hadn't seen anything quite like their creation before. They had delicate elven figures carved into the wooden pillars, and walls. Every piece of the place had been hand crafted with care and artistry. The decor was unique - so different than human like. In truth - had hadn't been in many elven places before, and never before a wood elf city. He was removed from his thoughts as they came to the Blacksmiths.
The smithy, as he would call it, was so different than his known. It was open, full of air and light - not hoveled into a dark corner, slaving away in the heat of the coals... Nicholas bowed his head to the blacksmith in return, listening to his conversation with Mazikeen.. it seemed Mazikeen was well known, and even respected... He raised a brow then as a blade was offered forward. He observed the craftsmanship and balanced the dagger in his hand "Wow" he spoke softly and then smiled. "This is impeccable work" he nodded "Thank you, I am sure it will come in hand. I'll let you know" he grinned and added the small sheath and blade to his belt.
As the blacksmith instructed - he took his chest piece off and set it down, leaving him in a ragged tunic. "I appreciate you taking care of it, don't stress much about matching the style, please take your artistic perspective" he smirked "Besides... I can already tell that your work is far beyond what I have on hand... anything you add will surely be a greater addition" he stepped aside for a moment and glanced toward several blades that sat - completed work. He touched the face of one of the blades, tracing the perfectly smooth metal. "I would be honored to hoist a weapon of your make" he bowed his head once more. "Thank you again" he spoke as Mazikeen lead them out.
They sat in a lovely bench, his eyes caught staring off to the passing people - the giant tree in the sky... He turned his gaze to Mazikeen as they exchanged conversation. He spoke of his home in Malroc - Branton, a the capitol of the lands. How people came from all over the world to train as a huntsman, beast slayers, sell swords and companions. That just walking through the cities - you could hear the war drums beating, chanting of men. How all makes came, a melting pot of culture. He spoke of his admiration for the city, that wood elves and elves were more rare in Malroc, but he had never seen such an organization before. Malroc was a melting pot - and often a hodge-podge of creations, all formulated together. Where as this city seem to have a flow about it, the artistic nature, to even the way people interacted. A kind of respect and love that lives in the blood of the clan. It was different to him.
"I want nothing more to help protect this city" he spoke as she began to speak of the plan. "I recall well where the portal is - just north east of this city, thick in the hillside. I am confident I can get her, and you, back to the portal to close it" he nodded his head confidently. "Alright, the city is priority. Understood" he nodded. It was not much longer then that Sayer called them back over.
He stepped into the blacksmiths and came to his armor.. he lifted the chest piece and grinned. "Impressive" his finger touched the links of chainmail patched in the side of his armor. It was different than his - it had nearly triple the chain count, it was still very fluid and flexible.. "wow" he grinned and then put the armor back on, pulling at the several belt straps over his chest. He then reached for his sword and turned it about - observing it. It had a perfect edge that seem to glimmer back at him... he sheathed it upon his back. He stepped to the blacksmith and gripped his arm - the same welcoming grasp Mazikeen had done to him previously. "I will not forget this" he spoke and then stepped back.
He followed Mazikeen as they made way to Rania. He bowed his head to her and listened to Mazikeen. "I am prepared" he agreed with her, there was nothing to do now... but wait. This was always the part of battle that made him uneasy. The reason why he went into beast hunting... the wait was this mulling feeling in his chest..
Nicholas turned his head then as there was shouting, the blow of a horn. He grit his teeth and followed behind Mazikeen as she lead them to the city walls. He glanced outward - his ring squeezed him slightly in response to the darkness in the distance. He clenched his fist and turned - the people running amist, many civilians rushing to the tree, others rushing towards the wall with their weapons drawn.
Nicholas gripped his fist and stepped forward as the archers rushed on either sides of him, lining the wall. He glanced to Mazikeen... He felt his ring pulsing now - magic swelling for him.
"The demons shall perish before your might! Hear me - fight with honor, with pride!" he shouted. From his lips - a wave of power to all around him. Confidence and strength would swell, his ring projecting his voice over the entire village. He gripped his blade and held it with both hands. The rangers shot upon command and he stared forward, the white beasts made way to the gates. As they came closer - he suddenly made a leap forward.
His ring pulsed brightly, filling him with is power. He hit the ground with ease - his blade crashing on the ground. A wave of power was thrusted forward, the earth in its wake cracking every so slightly, but not too deep. A wave of dust and dirt flinging into the air, sending the first several beasts flying back with this shockwave of a blow. He stood now infront of a crowd of elves - all holding their weapons. He gripped the blade and shouted once more - rushing forward.
Behind him the elves followed him, the front line of battle rushing inward. Nicholas felt an overwhelming amount of strength swelling with in him, a sort of rage bubbling within. He swung forward, slicing one beast completely into two. He gripped the claw of one beast and stabbed it easily...
Nicholas swung like mad - an elf next to him had buddied with him. The elven warrior next to him slammed his shield forward and Nicholas finished the beast off. Then the Elven warrior sliced over his shoulder - stabbing a beast that went for his back. The two worked like cog and wheel, moving around each other with ease.
It was several minutes later that his brothern had been bit on the shoulder, the minion demon clawing at him. Nicholas shouted and grasped the head of the beast, yanking him off and breaking his neck. He grasped the man who fell slump ins arm. He held the man barely, his body dragging over the bloodied ground. He dragged the elf back over the piles of dead demons, to the entrance of the walls. He spied Aela - who came rushing forward, having already tended to another. "Take him" he spoke to Aela. He swiftly turned and killed a demon who had managed through the waves of Elven warriors.
He looked out - they were being pushed back inch by inch, the swarm of demons was large. He looked to the sky then as similiar minions to the ones suddenly came forward - except these ones had wings. They covered the skies like locusts - headed forward from the forest heights. He heard the archers shout - their arrows flying now into the air... he grit his teeth and stabbed at another that came forward.
A flying demon swooped down suddenly and gripped Aela - lifting her easily into the air. Nicholas shouted outward and lifted his hand - a blue glowing blade appeared in the air and sliced at the beast, Nicholas ran forward tracking down the flying creature. "Aela!!" he shouted, he rushed forward into the thick of the beasts now, with no backup.
He pummeled forward several beasts with his shoulder, suddenly several swords appeared around him. They spun like furious windmills - slicing a path through the thick wave of beasts. His eyes glanced upward as the flapping minion demon continued onward. He pulled the frost dagger from his side and with strength he threw it forward, his precision perfect. It stabbed the beast in the wing - suddenly the entire beast became covered in ice... He held his hand forward and the blades shot forward, clearing more a path. Leaving a wake of dead beasts as he ran forward. The warriors now 60 feet or so away fighting in a mass as he took on the demons that rushed forward.
He ran now, jumping upward, he pressed a boot on a demon and leaped into the air, his blade falling to the ground as his hands reached for Aela that fell from the skies, dropped by the demon. He caught her and hit the ground, the wind knocked out of his chest as he hit the ground on his back, Aela in his grips. He groaned in pain and looked upward - demons swarmed over them now. Before they could claw wildly - he shouted a piercing shout. The demon's cried in pain as their ears burst, though those beyond 10 or so feet would not have been so impacted.
He scrambled upward, Aela in one arm, he reached for his blade. He fought off several with one hand. He took several gashes to his back and shoulder, he shifted swiftly to take the blows for Aela. The swarm of beasts came rushing in, with want for their blood...

Rania gave a bit of a nod and a smile as Mazikeen questioned her if the planning had gone well. “It went very well; your mages of this village are quite skilled. Some of the mages in the Arcane Circle could take a few tips and tricks from them.” She gave a light chuckle. She seemed to be in lighter spirits than she had been before. She was more comfortable now that she had gotten to help the city prepare, she hoped that they could prevail. But only time would tell. Jus the sight of the great demon sent chills down her spine. “I don’t believe we will be waiting for long…unfortunately.” The elf spoke as she glanced to Nicholas and then back to Mazikeen as they made their way through the city. She glanced back to the huge tree, she could sense something that was off. It was just as she had a sense of dread that formed within her being that she heard the sound of the horn. The announcement of the incoming demons. So it began. Rania rushed after the wood elf as they scaled up upon the wall. Her eyes looked to the sea of demons that rushed toward the wood elf village. Dread. That was all the mage of the circle felt. She took in a deep breath, and just as she did the dread seemed to melt away. Her eyes moved to the source of the wave of power, Nicholas. She watched as he rushed forward readily into battle. She grit her teeth slightly as she skillfully leaped down from the wall of the village, she landed harshly and rushed forward as she slipped her daggers from her thighs. Rania’s eyes glowed with the fire of hell as she sliced into the first demon. Fire erupted from the chest of the demon and blood splattered across the ground. She was unlike most mages. Most of the circle would much rather sit back and cast their magic from a distance, but not Rania. She knew that she could do more damage in the midst of battle. The elf took out demon after demon with her blades. She spun, she rolled, she ducked beneath their slashes and bites. She fought directly alongside the beastmasters and the fighters of the village. The growls of battle, the clank of steel. As much as she hated it, she truly felt alive in these moments of triumph. Rania was slammed back harshly by a demon that had barreled toward her from the side. There was a clatter of a blade against the back of the demon as it pinned Rania to the ground. Her eyes glowed with more power as she felt a slice into her thigh from the beast. Fire erupted from her palms as she slammed against the demon and it was blasted back from her. The demons had begun pushing the elves back at this point. A hand thrust before Rania’s eyes and she looked up to see Layla. Rania took the beastmaster’s hand and was pulled back to her feet. Layla used her blade and slashed through a demon quickly, protecting the young arcane mage. Rania gave a nod as she released Layla’s hand. A thank you in the time of battle. She turned as she heard something that nearly caused her heart to stop. Before her eyes Aela was lifted into the air by one of the flying beasts. “No…this can’t happen.” She breathed. Though she was swarmed by demons as she started to push forward. Her eyes caught a glimpse of Nicholas as he displayed his power. Rania slammed her palms together and a wave of fire surged from her encasing the demons that surrounded her now, a thin white barrier rose around the wood elves that fought at her side. The fires of her magic burned the beasts to a crisp and she once again drew her blades. Rania’s eyes were on the skies as more demons swarmed in. She grit her teeth as she heard the familiar sound. “Fall back! There’s too many of them!” She glanced to the city walls. No. She wouldn’t fall back. She couldn’t. It was her duty to protect these elves. She had been tasked with the charge and she must do her best. Falling back was not her best. She caught the demon that had Aela with her eyes just as Nicholas had thrown the ice dagger up into the skies. The elf was distracted and once again a demon blocked her path. This time it was a bit of a larger demon. A commander of the smaller troops. It screeched at her as it slashed forward. Rania had a bit of a smirk upon her lips. “Too slow.” She spoke as she thrust forward, her blade pierced into the jaw of the demon, she twisted it and flames shot out of the top of the skull. She then kicked the demon back and she sheathed her blades. Her eyes took on a blue glow as she sucked in a deep breath. Her fingertips covered in frost. “I won’t allow you to do this!” She cried as a burst of ice shot up from the ground in the midst of the demons. Rania rushed forward as demons froze before her wake. Her skin had taken on an icy appearance almost as if she were frozen beneath a stream. Even her blood from her injuries froze as it left her body. Rania made it to Nicholas as he was swarmed by the demons. Her breaths were heavy as she threw her arms around the two. She let out a cry as she felt claws over her back, as she leaned her head back a burst of white magic came from her in a wave. The power pierced through the demons and rushed out like the wave of a tsunami. As the power reached elves it easily diverted around them, like a boulder within a stream. Yet, each and every demon within 200 or so feet of the young elf fell, those within the skies became limp and plummeted to the ground. It was a huge task to draw upon such magic. The white glow faded from Rania’s eyes, blood trickled from her nose as she gripped onto the two. She gazed to Nicholas. “We….must close the portal. They will not survive if we do not.” Her voice was breathless. She turned and rushed back toward the city, her feet were heavy. Blood trickled down her leg and back from her injuries, but that would not stop her. Just as the gashes in her side from the previous encounter would not stop her. A demon landed before Rania as she stood alone. He snarled in her face and gripped onto her before she could react. Rania kicked against his chest as he made to take flight. She gazed into his amber eyes as she gripped onto his arm. Ice began to crawl up his arm slowly. The demon roared as he tossed her to the ground. Rania pulled her daggers and rushed forward, the blades began to glow like lava within a volcano. She let out a yell as she sliced forward. The two danced, the demon blocked her attacks moving swiftly as she did. The beast seemed to chuckle as the elf began to tire out. He thrust forward to grip onto her body once again. Rania grit her teeth as she dodged, just barely. She watched as arrows pierced into the demons wings and weighed him down. Rania kicked forward as a growl escaped her own lips. She slammed the demon to his back and with both blades she came down upon his chest and sank them in up to the hilt. Rania twisted the blades harshly as fire erupted from the punctures and she withdrew her blades. She glanced back to Nicholas and Aela and gave a nod. “Come on.” She spoke to them and moved forward once again. “We have to push on the portal now…if we do not we will lose the town.” She spoke as she helped Aela along. Her eyes looked to Nicholas as they made it to the city walls. She looked to Aela with worried eyes, “Stay within the city, stay with the mages.” She turned and glanced to the tree more demons emerged. The young elf grit her teeth. These things were relentless. Drawn to power like a moth to flame.

"The Cacophony of Battle"
Mazikeen of the Angmar Rangers Mazikeen and her fellow rangers fired relentlessly into the skies, their arrows piercing the demon’s skin and covered them in ice. As one fell to the ground, two more seemed to take its place. The ranger watched Nicholas and Rania jump into the fray down below, taking on the ground assault making its way for the front gate. The air was filled with the cacophony of battle, screeches, cries, and sounds of metal and claws clashing together. At the beastmaster’s commands, the wolves of Valendra charged into battle, leaping into the pack of oncoming demons, tearing apart the creatures’ flesh with their teeth. A flash caught Mazikeen’s attention as she watched Ganalon and Faerin move seamlessly together, their blades meeting their marks as they worked through demon after demon alongside Nicholas. Mazikeen shot arrow after arrow into the sky, striking a demon in the eye, her next shot piercing a demon’s wing, sending it to the ground as its wing froze. The ranger quickly glanced to the ground as she finally spotted Aela, tending to one of the warriors on the ground. The demons reacted to her presence, her magic enticing them to turn on her. Mazikeen shouted, redirecting her aim down to the ground at the beasts focused on the young cleric. As she killed one of the demons charging towards Aela, another swooped down and picked her up easily off the ground. The ranger screamed the cleric’s name, watching in horror as she disappeared into the sky amongst the horde of creatures. Mazikeen fired helplessly into the mob of winged demons, searching for any sight of the cleric. The ranger held her breath as she spotted Nicholas charging forward, his magical sword apparitions slaying countless demons. Mazikeen let out a whimper of relief as she saw Nicholas save the young cleric, catching her as she fell. Rania was quick to retrieve them both, her powerful burst of magic hurt the ranger’s eyes as she watched all the demons in the area fall dead. The three made their way back to the gate, as wood elf ground force tightened their ranks and fell back to the entrance. More demons poured from the forest, and Mazikeen’s gaze turned to the skies as she heard a loud screech. A wave of greater demons flew towards the city, some tucking their wings and plummeting to the ground, landing in front of the gates to charge the guard. Ganalon let out a cry, the warriors and beastmasters surging forward again to take on the second assault. The Captain charged one of the larger demons, bringing his blade down across its chest. The menacing creature roared, bringing a large clawed hand back and slamming it into Ganalon’s chest, sending the wood elf flying back. Layla rushed over to the Captain, helping him up. The beastmaster shouted, “Genn!” The white wolf’s ears perked, a small demon’s neck in his jaws. Tossing the body aside, Genn growled and charged towards the large demon making his way towards Layla and Ganalon. The wolf leapt, his teeth clamping down on the demon’s wrist, snarling violently as he tore at his flesh. The large creature roared, swinging his arm hard, tossing the wolf aside. Genn hit the ground, scrambling back up for a second attack. The demon’s eyes were set on Ganalon, bent on revenge for the large bleeding gash across its chest. The Captain tried to catch his breath, leaning on Layla. As he saw the demon charge, he pushed Layla out of harm’s way and took the brunt of another attack, bringing his shield up in time to protect himself from the beast’s claws. The creature towered over the Captain, grabbing his shield and ripping it from Ganalon’s hands. The wood elf warrior swung forward with his sword, slashing the demon again in the chest as Genn sunk his jaws into its left ankle. The menacing behemoth roared in pain and hatred, lunging forward at the Captain, his clawed hand aiming right for Ganalon’s chest. Layla cried out, rushing forward and shoving her Captain out of the way. She turned towards the demon, just in time to watch as its claws sunk into her chest. The beastmaster sputtered, blood dripping from her lips as she fell to her knees. Ganalon’s cry of anguish caught Mazikeen’s attention, and the ranger watched in horror as the Captain leapt forward, severing the demon’s head from its body. He turned to Layla, who sunk to the ground, clutching her chest. Ganalon cradled Layla’s head as the battle ensued around them, her body letting out a final breath before she went limp. The Captain grit his teeth, a tear in his eye as stood and turned, throwing himself into battle, hell bent on revenge. Genn ran up to his master’s body, crouching down near her head. The white wolf nudged Layla with his nose, whimpering. His lone howl signaled his master’s death, sending a chill up Mazikeen’s spine. Pain filled Mazikeen’s chest as she took a moment to see how many had already fallen, her family. She let out her own cry of anguish as she notched another arrow, watching it sink into the eye socket of a winged demon. The ranger blinked in shock. Even though her arrow killed the creature, no ice was present on its body as it plummeted to the ground. Mazikeen glanced down to her bow, did the enchantment wear off? Hers was the first to be enchanted, and she had used it in the forest already when they met Nicholas. The ranger let out a sharp breath, knowing she would have to aim even more carefully without the help of the enchantment. As she made this discovery, several of the large winged demons surged forward, landing on the Valendran wall. The rangers of Angmar turned on the creatures near them, pushing one of the demons off the wall and sending it to the ground, filling its chest with several arrows. A large screech pierced Mazikeen’s ears as a demon barreled towards her and several of the other rangers on the wall. She sunk an arrow into its chest, but the demon continued to head right for them. She shouted out, and the rangers dove out of the way as the creature descended upon them. Mazikeen scrambled to her feet, the demon right next to her, balancing on the wall. The ranger drew her new dagger, rushing forward and sinking it into the demon’s arm. The blade entered the creature’s skin, filling the wound with ice. The winged creature screeched in pain, swinging with its other arm and hit Mazikeen, sending the wood elf flying back into the city. Mazikeen landed with a thud on the roof of the nearest building, the breath knocked out of her. Grabbing onto the peak of the roof, she scrambled up and turned, watching the demon leap off the wall towards her, giving chase. The ranger pushed off the roof and leapt to the next building, landing hard, rolling forward to distribute the force. She looked back behind her, heart pounding, as the large demon easily made the leap to the next building. Mazikeen cried out for help, running to the edge of the building and leaping to the next roof, her assailant right on her heels. The ranger drew closer to the tree of Angmar as she tried to escape, preparing to leap for the next roof. As her feet left the edge, she felt claws wrap around her waist and yank her body back. The demon scrambled, falling off the roof with Mazikeen in its grip. They landed with a thud, and Mazikeen screamed as she turned and slashed viciously with her blade as the grip around her body tightened. A beam of light blinded the ranger, and she heard the large demon screech in pain. The claws around her loosened, and Mazikeen broke out of its grasp, falling to the ground. She turned, watching the demon melt under the power of a bright stream of magic. Mazikeen heard someone shout her name, and her head turned towards the tree. Esha stood near Aroth, both their hands relaxing after their cast. The ranger waved that she was alright, breathing heavily. They had saved her life. She turned back, the demon was now just a pile of ash. Aroth shouted to the forces around him. “We have to protect the tree!” Mazikeen looked to the skies as demons flew towards the great source of magic, some landing on the ground near the group, a few landing on the branches of the trees. One of the demons snapped a branch off the great tree, and anger filled Mazikeen’s core. She cried out, drawing her longbow once again, aiming for the demon’s neck. As she made her shot, Esha pummeled the demon with ice magic, its body quickly crumpling to the ground. As the creatures entered the city, more gravitated towards the tree. Mazikeen and a few other rangers worked with the mages, slaying demon after demon as they landed on the tree of Angmar. They were heavily outnumbered, the winged creatures descending onto the tree, gnawing on its branches and stripping the bark off. Aroth looked around desperately, knowing the tree would be destroyed if this continued. They needed more forces. The old mage rushed over to the base of the tree, placing his hands on the trunk. Esha backed up so she stood near Aroth, protecting him with her magic as he began an incantation. Mazikeen did not understand the language he spoke, but his powerful voice grew louder as he chanted. The tree started to glow, responding to Aroth’s plea. The great tree pulsed with a magical light for a few seconds, then faded, returning to its normal state. The display of magic confused the demons for a moment, but as it faded they went back to swarming the tree and the forces down below. Mazikeen shot a few more out of the sky, making sure to hit them in the eye socket so they would be killed instantly. The ranger looked around, confused, not understanding what was supposed to happen. Did Aroth’s magical plea go unheard? The old mage stood, joining Esha once again in pushing back the demons. Everyone in the town square froze as a sharp cry rang from the skies. Mazikeen looked up, spotting a black circle swirling down above the tree. More demons?! She thought frantically. As she continued to watch the black circle descent down, the ranger realized the winged creatures were much smaller than demons. Another sharp cry rang out, and the ranger’s eyes widened. Hawks, crows, eagles, and birds of all kinds plummeted down, flying straight for the demons. The forest itself had joined the fight, answering Aroth’s call. Two hawks landed on a winged demon, clawing at its eyes. An eagle grappled the wing of another demon, pumping its own wings to redirect the demon’s path from the tree as several crows landed on its body, sinking their talons into its flesh. The birds swarmed the demons, pecking and using their talons to disable the large creatures. Screeches filled the air once again as the demons swung wildly at the flock, trying to combat the avain assault. Mazikeen watched in awe for a moment, then notched another arrow, killing a demon balancing on one of the tree’s limbs. While the demons were distracted by the flock, the wood elves on the ground were able to pick them off easily, clearing the tree’s branches of the remaining demons. Some of the birds landed on the branches as the fight in the town square concluded, while the majority flew towards the front gate where the battle continued. Aroth let out a breath, looking a little worn. He waved over the group, his eyes on the mages. “Those of you trained to help Rania destroy the portal need to find her and be ready to depart when the time presents itself. I want whoever has the strength left in them to escort them there, and fend off any evil that guards the portal entrance.” Mazikeen nodded, knowing the minor injuries she had would be bearable. The old mage let out a breath. “I will remain here with the tree. You will have to fight your way out of the front gate. Find Rania and Nicholas, help them get out of the city.” The group turned and headed out of the square, leaving Aroth at the base of the great tree with a few other guardsmen. Mazikeen and the mages started to make their way through Valendra, back towards the fight at the front gate- intent on finding Rania and Nicholas. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aroth turned, taking in the damage the great tree had suffered. It would survive, he thought. It pained him to look at the broken limbs, the places where the bark had been stripped off. As the ancient wood elf caught his breath, a large thud in the square made him turn. A large winged demon had landed on the stone street, its gaze fixed on Aroth. The creature was huge, it had to be one of the assault commanders. The old mage took in the appearance of the great demon, and he closed his eyes for a moment, knowing that the time had come. He knew his spells would not be enough. Aroth was the only druid in Valendra, he had not needed to use his transformation magic for many centuries. The older he became, the harder the magic was on his body, and he knew that his next transformation would be his last. When he had learned of the demon assault, a part of him knew that it spelled the end of his time in Valendra. The great demon sneered with pleasure at the sight of the old mage, intent on killing him and then destroying the great tree. The few other wood elves in the square cowered in fear at the sight of the large, horrifying creature. Aroth turned and gave a small smile to the only other mage left in the square. The message in his eyes was clear, he was saying goodbye. The old mage straightened proudly, meeting the demon’s gaze as it strode forward. Aroth spoke a single word in Elvish, and his body burst with blue light. The blinding light grew for a moment as the mage’s body transformed, and as the light faded, a large light blue wolf stood at the base of the tree. Aroth’s form was both beautiful and terrifying, the edges of his frame slightly hazy and sparkling, giving him a spectral appearance. The demon froze for a moment, blinking in confusion. The demon commander snarled, charging forward at Aroth. The great wolf growled, leaping forward and meeting the demon head on. The elves in the square watched with wide eyes, not able to take their eyes off the scene. Aroth sunk his teeth into the demon’s neck, ripping a large chunk of flesh off. The creature howled, grasping the large wolf and tried to dislodge him. Aroth sunk both his teeth and claws in relentlessly, bringing his powerful jaws back down on the throat of the demon. The commander shook violently, pushing Aroth off of him, clawing at his sides. The large wolf wasted no time, lunging back in, bringing his jaws down once more around the demon’s skull. Aroth shook his head violently, snapping the large commander’s neck. The creature fell to the ground, and the great wolf released its grip, panting. Aroth backed away from the body, shaking his pelt. The great wolf blinked, looking around the square at the few wood elves. Feera, the only mage left in the square, approached Aroth, tears streaming down her face. She reached up, resting a hand on Aroth’s snout. “We will never forget you.” Feera’s lip trembled as the wolf’s form grew more transparent, his wounds disappearing from his frame. Aroth blinked and bowed his wolf head in farewell. He stalked away, heading for the gate and into the forest. As he did his body fully disappeared, leaving a spectral trail in his wake.

The world was of complete chaos - his hand held onto the healer, his body taking thrashes as he tried his best to defend the two from the oncoming beasts. He grit his teeth - then suddenly there was silence. His eyes glanced outward to the woman before her. She was so close - he could smell the thick demon blood on her skin. Her eyes glowed brightly and a flash of power blast outward. It left a crater of death around them.. he breathed in slowly and let it go. Suddenly it was like time began again - her words sounded as if she was under water. The portal..
Nicholas helped Aela rush forward as they made back to the gates of the city, the entirety of the militia were retreating backwards. He gripped his blade with two hands and stopped as the two headed forward. He turned as a wave of minions came his way. "I'll make you fuckers pay" he thrashed forward then, he slashed at several in a single sweep. He filled with rage now - so immensly that his body glowed a gentle blue, emitting from his ring. As beasts clammered towards him - they tried to attack but were thrown back by this magical barrier that traced his being.
He glanced upward as he fought - a huge demon swooped down to the city... "Do not let up!!" He shouted, his voice echoing in the air. Behind him several elven warriors stood next to him, they fought the front lines. The demons pushed forward, only for them to be slaughtered. "Line up!" he shouted, the elfs grasped their shields and formed infront of him. "Hold your shield high!" he called and stood behind one. He held his sword high, level with his shoulder - he stabbed forward between two shields. "Slam!" he shouted as a wave came to them. They all counted in their elvish tongue - 1, 2, 3! Slam! "Forward!" Nicholas shouted and stabbed between shields. This was working. The line of warriors grew and grew - Nicholas shouted commands. They pushed the demons back, any demons that got through - were shot down by the archers, wolves and life circling the space between the line of warriors and the entrance of the wall.
"You - continue!" he spoke to the Elf next to him. The man instantly took over - shouting to slam in unison, to step forward, to stab, to fight. A crowd of men ushered forward with their spears and swords and like Nicholas - they stabbed between the shields, protecting the front line of warriors.
Nicholas felt a wave of power from behind him, he turned his gaze slightly and then glanced upward. Screeches and cawing came from the skies - the demons that had made it into the city had been plucked away. He grinned and looked back forward - only to see something even more amazing. There were several trees who unrooted - their limbs mobile and large. They managed to formulate legs with their roots. He had read of this before - Ents, the magical forest coming alive. He grinned and gripped his blade as he watched huge branches swing down and take out 10-15 demons at a side. Roots and vines snaked about and pulled creatures away. This was their chance.
Nicholas turned from the battle field and rushed back towards the city. He slashed at a few minor beasts, only to stop as he eyed the great demon - ripped apart by the beautiful wolf. He felt a shiver up his spine and he turned, glacing to the sky. "Everyone! Get to cover!" he shouted. He held up his blade - several glowing blue swords appearing. A rain of molten rock came from the skies, a single demon - the one from before - flapped above and glanced downward. His swords in the air swung wildly, breaking up several, but not all. The molten rock fell upon several homes, crushing it easily and starting vicious fires.
He grit his teeth - turning suddenly. The rain had ended, the beast retreating for his portal, no doubt. "Mazikeen!" he shouted "Rania!" he called for them. His voice was loud - projected by his warrior spirit, and the magic about his ring. "The portal awaits us!"

Rania’s emerald eyes stared to the demons as they flooded forward from the skies and from the thick darkness of the forest. Her expression fell slightly as memories of the past swept over her, consuming her mind and causing her to freeze as if she were a statue. The demons would not stop until they gained complete control over the lands of Oneus. They would destroy everything in their path, engulf the magic of the fonts and level the cities. The demons would grow in strength if they could not be stopped. The Arcane Circle had tried to prevent this, they had hoped that closing the other small fonts would stop the demons. But there seemed to be a larger root to the problem. One that the Arcane Circle had yet to discover, it was something that ate away at Rania like that of a parasitic disease within the body. It was constantly there, gnawing at her conscious, reminding her that there was so much more to learn, so much more that they had yet to discover. Rania’s breath shook as she stood motionless. Do not let up! The words of the warrior broke Rania from her trance like state just as a demon slammed against her. The impact caused the sound around her to deafen. The clatter of blades disappeared. Only her breaths filled her ears, her heartbeat bound within her chest. The mage let out a cry as she was slammed to her back on the ground. Her daggers that she’d held in her hands clattered to the ground and scattered away from her, willing her defenseless except for her magic. The huge claws of the demon wrapped around Rania’s torso and arms, like a child would hold onto a small stuffed doll, squeezing her tightly. She couldn’t breathe, panic rose in the mage’s eyes. The mage couldn’t lift her arms to cast her spells, she couldn’t make contact with the demon with her palms. She began to shout in elvish tongue at the beast that snarled at her, her words only seemed to fuel the hate that the beast had for her causing it to crush her further. She feared her bones would give in and allow the creature to finish her off. There was a snap in her right side as the demon leaned its weight more upon her. Rania groaned in pain as the air was pushed from her lungs, her skin grew pale as she failed to suck in a breath under the weight of the demon. She closed her eyes as she tried to release herself from the grip of the beast. Nothing seemed to work. The elf began to see flashes of her past. Of a time before the demons came. Her body was beginning to give in, all sound was beginning to fade. A bright flash of light came before her eyes then. The grip of the demon released suddenly and he melted into a pile of ash. Rania gasped in a breath and began to cough as pain racked her body. She opened her eyes to see Esha standing over her with a hand extended down to the mage. “We can’t lose you now, high elf.” Esha gave a smile as she helped Rania to her feet. “You won’t do us much good if you’re dead.” The world seemed to of stopped in that moment. The cries of battle had failed to return to Rania’s ears as she gazed to Esha. Rania grit her teeth as the sound returned and she looked around to the chaos around her. The clash of swords against the hard demon flesh. Esha handed the mage’s daggers back to her and gave a nod. Rania looked to her daggers that she held in her hands once again. She was in a daze. Perhaps her use of power had drained her? She lifted her eyes to the skies briefly before the screech of the demons brought her attention forward again. The mage gripped her daggers tightly as she moved forward. Frost crusted the ground in her wake as she stepped forward slowly, leaving a trail of footprints behind her. Ice crawled up her arms as her eyes glowed a light blue, her daggers took on the same appearance. As a swarm of demons came forth Rania charged forward, her blades moved effortlessly through the pack. Ice raced through the wounds that she inflicted. Cuts into the chest, stabs upward and into the jaw, punctures to the eye. Rania did not stop. A few claws cut into her skin here and there but she did not seem to be phased by the pain. Even the broken rib did not seem to slow her down. Esha pushed forward and blasted beams of light at the demons taking them out as they got behind the high elf and made to strike her. They worked wonderfully together as a team. They did not need words within the battle to help one another. Rania stopped demons from rushing upon Esha and vice versa. It was much like a dance between the two mages as they handled the demons. As the group of demons lay upon the ground, blood dripped from the blades that Rania held in her grip. She shuddered slightly as her eyes caught something in the sky. The greater demon. Fire began to rain down upon the city. “No…” She breathed as she rushed forward into the walls of the city. Rania shot balls of ice into the air as she ran, breaking up the molten rocks, but she couldn’t get them all. Her eyes saw dancing blue blades that attempted to stop the onslaught of flaming rocks as well. It must have been Nicholas. Though Rania didn’t take time to try to figure that out. Rage boiled up within her as she gazed up to the greater demon once again. “Enough!” She screamed, her voice harsh. It carried over the city streets like the call of war. The way that this city had begun to fall…it reminded her of the night that she lost her sister. It brought back too many horrible memories. Too much sorrow. Rania formed a dagger of ice in her hands and tossed it into the sky. It flipped through the air swiftly and sliced into the shoulder of the great demon, narrowly missing his wing. A roar came from the beast as its amber eyes turned to her. A chuckle carried from the lips of the demon as he formed a fiery molten rock in his grasp. “Puny mage! I’ll crush you!” He snarled, his voice reverberated through her chest with its deep tones most would have quaked in their boots to the sound. He then chucked the huge molten rock in her direction. Rania lifted her hands up and created a white translucent barrier before her as she braced for the impact, she wasn’t skilled in the art of barriers, but it was her only chance there was no way to dodge this attack. Esha placed her hand upon Rania’s shoulder. She felt the mage’s power as it flowed into her giving her strength to hold the barrier up, a sense of calm overcame her. The molten rock slammed against the barrier bending it in so that it was only a few inches from Rania’s face. The two mages were pushed back several feet, their heels dug into the dirt. The molten rock broke into a thousand pieces leaving flaming ashes around the two. Rania took in quick breaths as she glanced to Esha. It was in that moment that Rania heard the warrior cry out for her and Mazikeen. “It’s time.” Rania turned to Esha then, “Where are the other two mages?” She questioned quickly. Esha furrowed her brows slightly, “I’ve lost them in the chaos…” She glanced around to the flames that engulfed the buildings. Rania grit her teeth slightly, she needed the power of the other mages to close that portal. “We will find them.” She nodded and gave a soft smile as she sheathed a dagger. “They’re here.” She placed a hand upon Esha’s shoulder. “Come on.” She turned and then rushed through the city. She leaped over dead demon bodies and elf bodies alike. It was a true warzone. Her eyes glazed over with tears. She was failing. She hadn’t prepared them enough. She skidded to a stop next to the warrior, her eyes gazed to the partially destroyed tree of Angmar. The missing pieces of bark and the broken limbs caused pain to fill her soul. Such a monument, such a thing of power should never been destroyed in such a way. The demons, did not care. They did not stop. They would consume every bit of magic that Oneus held. A pit formed in her stomach as the gravity of the situation settled in upon the high elf. She felt Esha’s hand upon her shoulder, surely the wood elf could feel the pain within her soul. Rania glanced to the elf and gave a nod before she gazed to the warrior. “We have little time.” She spoke, her voice soft. She looked like she had been through hell and back. Her face was smudged with black tar like blood of the demons and her own red blood. Lines of tears cut through the blood and mud upon her face creating two distinct lines upon her cheeks. She had several rips in her leather armor that clung to her body beneath her cloak. “We need the other mages…” She gazed to the burning buildings. “Lead the way, Nicholas…I can only pray to the gods that we make it in time.” She held her hand over her broken rib for a moment. The elf didn’t appear weak considering. She had been through worse. She’d seen this before. She’d picked up the broken and battered bodies of elves and humans, dwarves and more. It did not bring her pleasure to know that she had failed to prepare the wood elves well. But, she could only hope that the gods would allow her this one pass that they would allow her to save the city.

"To the Portal"
Mazikeen of the Angmar Rangers Mazikeen moved towards the front gate with some of her fellow rangers and the group of mages- Esha and Feera among them. The flock of birds flew overhead in the same direction, like a group of avian guardians, calling to each other as they spotted more demons to the north. As they neared the stone wall, the ranger’s head snapped up as a great shadow passed over the group. The demon lord hovered in the air, his powerful wings producing large gusts of air as he surveyed the city. The hawks and crows immediately spread out, crying out in alarm and veering away from the demon. The black and red monstrous beast eyed the enemy down below, and let out a snarl. Mazikeen heard him speak, though she was too far away to understand what the menacing creature said. Out of nowhere, great molten rocks appeared, raining down from the skies. The ranger gasped, watching in horror as the flaming projectiles crashed into buildings, destroying roofs and setting them ablaze. One of the rocks sped towards Aela’s cottage. Mazikeen turned her head as she finally spotted the young cleric, her white robes torn in several places. Aela ran towards her home, crying out. The ranger lunged forward, grabbing the cleric and pulling her back as the molten rock crashed through the roof of Aela’s house. The petite wood elf sagged in Mazikeen’s arms, her teary gaze fixed on her home as it began to burn. The ranger held her dear friend, patting her back. “I’m sorry Aela.” The young cleric sniffled, “All my hard work, all the solutions I made to help.” Mazikeen held her for a minute longer, guiding her back to the other side of the street, underneath a stone archway. The ground shook as more projectiles hammered the ground, Mazikeen steadied herself against one of the stone pillars, Aela still in her other arm. The ranger looked down to the cleric. “Let’s be thankful for now we still have our lives. We have to group back up with the others, we have to get to that portal.” The small wood elf nodded, straightening up as she wiped her face. “You are right Maze. Let’s hurry and find our friends.” Mazikeen looked around as the last of the flaming rocks fell, and the demon lord soared away towards the forest with a fearsome snarl. The sounds of battle continued outside the front gate as the ranger took a moment to look around the city, her home. Buildings were destroyed, some still burning intensely as more wood caught fire. Bodies littered the ground, most of them were of demon variety, but some were her friends, her family. Mazikeen’s upper lip curled in anger, her teeth bared. She grabbed Aela’s hand and rushed outward into the street, looking for the others. She spotted some of the other mages near the front gate, though Esha was not among them. Mazikeen jogged towards Feera, the young cleric in tow. “Where is Esha? Have you seen her?” Feera gestured towards the gate, “She must be near the front lines.” The mage gripped Mazikeen’s arm, looking into her eyes. “Aroth, he’s gone. He gave his life to protect the tree. He called upon the last of his magic.” Feera’s lip trembled. “Are you sure we can finish this without him?” Mazikeen let out a sharp breath as sadness filled her core. Another great loss, one they would mourn for quite some time if they survived this. The ranger nodded towards Feera. “If we work together, I believe we have the strength to do this. Remember, we have Rania and Nicholas.” Mazikeen gave Feera a reassuring pat. “C’mon, we must find them and get to the portal.” Feera let out a breath, nodding to the two other mages with her. The group headed for the front gate. Mazikeen did not allow herself to dwell on the anguish she felt inside. She would be of no use to anyone if she thought about those who were lost. The time to mourn would come. The group of elves rushed out the gate, and the ranger called out as she saw Rania, Esha and Nicholas together near the stone wall. Mazikeen’s words hung in the air as she took in the scene in front of her, the ranger’s expression was one of awe. Before her, the trees of Angmar themselves fought, their branches swinging down like mighty arms, crushing demons where they stood. The forest had definitely heard Aroth’s call, and was providing all the aid it could give. Rania, Esha, and Nicholas rushed over as Mazikeen blinked, her eyes still fixated on the animated trees. “Incredible” she muttered. The ranger shook her head, nodding towards her companions as they grouped up. Esha let out a breath, addressing everyone. “We must find the portal now while the city’s defenses hold. We cannot allow another assault to meet the walls.” Mazikeen nodded in agreement. The wood elf warriors held the front lines, easily keeping back the demons brave enough to venture within reach of their blades. The trees steadily pushed the horde of demons back into the forest, the air was filled with the sounds of groaning as their wooden branches swung with deadly force. Mazikeen quickly eyed Rania and Nicholas over, who both had sustained several injuries, but looked ready to carry on. The group turned as Ganalon ran over, Faerin right behind him. The Captain caught his breath, looking battered, his shield missing. “You must go now. Nicholas, lead them to the portal. We can hold the defenses here long enough to give you time.” Ganalon turned, nodding to Faerin, and waved over Keelan, the ranger who had been on patrol before Mazikeen the morning they found Nicholas. “Faerin, Keelan, go with them.” The two tall wood elves bowed their heads in agreement. Faerin strode over to Mazikeen, resting a hand on her shoulder, giving her a nod. The Captain’s gaze traveled over the group, “If things do not go according to plan, retreat back and we will regroup. Hopefully it does not come to that.” Ganalon placed his right fist over his chest, and gave a slight bow. “Make haste, my friends.” Mazikeen turned towards the north, letting Nicholas take the lead as the group left the Valendran defenses and made their way to the forest’s edge. The few demons left in the battlefield were easily killed as the team jogged for the trees. They passed the animated trees of Angmar, who paid no attention to the group as they trudged after the remaining demons in the area. As the group entered the forest, Mazikeen’s head turned as she heard a bark. Genn rushed up to the group, and a pang of sadness tore at the ranger’s chest as she was reminded of Layla’s fate. The white wolf bounded towards the front of the group, falling in step right next to Nicholas, his eyes fixated on the path ahead. As the sounds of battle faded behind them, Mazikeen focused on their course. The forest around them was eerily silent. Esha was right, now was the best time to seek out the portal before another demon horde was sent forth. The team moved swiftly through the wooded terrain, not much was said, everyone seemingly preoccupied with their own thoughts about what they left behind, and what was up ahead. Aela jogged up next to Rania, taking her hand and squeezing it. Mazikeen sighed, wishing the young cleric would have stayed behind, where she would be more safe. A part of the ranger was relieved though to have her close by. The group was about a mile into the forest when Mazikeen heard the footfalls of a creature to the left. She instantly drew her bow, nocking an arrow as the group slowed, aiming for the source of the noise. Mazikeen expected a demon to charge out of the brush, but instead, was surprised by the sight of a small cougar. The lithe cat turned its head, taking in the sight of the group, then returned its gaze to the path ahead, slinking back into the brush as it headed north. The ranger lowered her bow in confusion, glancing at the others. As they slowly started to walk forward, Aela turned her head to the right, just in time to see two large bucks prancing forward gracefully through the bushes, also heading north. Faerin cleared his throat, taking in the strange sight. “It seems some of the creatures of Angmar are also heading for the portal.” Mazikeen’s eyes widened for a moment. Aroth’s call through the great tree had more effect than she imagined. The team picked up its pace again, Nicholas and Genn leading the way. A pack of coyotes raced through the trees past the group, one ran so close by Mazikeen, she could have reached out and touched its fur. The creatures paid no attention to the elves and human as they made their way to the portal location, their focus on the task ahead- protecting the forest. Mazikeen sucked in a breath, knowing that the fate of their people would be decided soon. Genn’s ears perked, hearing something up ahead that the group could not make out yet. They must be getting close. Mazikeen gripped her bow tightly as she jogged forward with her companions. She narrowed her eyes, ready to face whatever was waiting for them.

Nicholas did waste any time - once the group had reconnected he lead the group forward. They traversed past the battle and pushed into the thick of the forest. His steps were fast as they made way through the forest paths, following the old trails of hooves from the previous day. He had his sword in one hand, propped on his shoulder as he rushed forward. They went for some time - until he came to a familiar rock side, a hill just in the thick of brush. "This way" he spoke. His gaze turned and he watched the wolves, fox and forest kind pushing beyond him.
He felt fear swell in his chest, but the addition of the wildlife gave him some kind of calm, even reassurance. He felt his ring pusle and squeeze slightly as he came closer to the hillside. He held his hand out as he stopped suddenly. Laying in over a collapsed bush was the dismembered body of a human. He knelt down and gripped the bow that lay next to the body... he sucked in a breath and his eyes looked over to this man... who stared to the skies. His flesh had been shredded, his bloodied muscles showing to the canopy. Nicholas pulled off his own tattered black cloak and layed it over the man and placed the bow atop him. "I will come back for you" he whispered softly "Rest now" he spoke and stood.
"Let's make them pay" he spoke through grit teeth. He rushed forward to a large tree and gripped the bark. The tree was larger than he could ever wrap his arms around... it hid him well as he leaned down next to a bush. He shut his eyes for a brief moment - and opened them. For a second he saw Jet standing next to him - his bow in hand. He blinked once more and he saw Rania standing, looking forward. Did he lead his new friends to the same fate?
Nicholas peered down the slight valley, the portal still stood. The huge demon stood before it - his huge brute of arms glowing as he summoned more creatures from the portal. Several of the small minions crawled from the depths of the earth in which the portal rest. They clawed at the soggy earth and pulled themselves up - each letting out a screech of terror. The beasts of the wilderness launched from the brushes and clawed at the minions, but it did not stop the great demon from summoning more.
"His Wings right?" he questioned and gripped his hand, his ring glowing through his leather gloves. "We give it all we have - for the wings. Catch him now... and then we rush in for the battle..?" he questioned. "Keep him grounded - and we can do this" he gripped his blade then. "I will wait for your command Mazikeen, I will launch my swords to his wings, we all attack at once and sever him"

Rania’s emerald hues had moved to the trees of Angmar that fought off the demons. She had felt the swell of power not long ago that summoned the help of the forest, but to see it in action. As Esha began to speak the high elf turned her gaze to Mazikeen, then to Nicholas and finally to Esha and the others. She gave a slight nod to Mazikeen, glad to see that the ranger was fairing well. “Esha is right, we do not have much time. This is our only chance to end this…” Her eyes moved once again to the hordes of demons. It was incredible to see how aggressive the demons became in the presence of great magic. She’d saved smaller settlements that did not hold the magic that the Tree of Angmar held. The high elf’s eyes fell upon Aela, she drew in a breath. She did not like the idea of the young cleric accompanying them into such a dangerous situation, but then again…if someone were to become fatally wounded the young cleric would be the last hope to breathe life back into the wounded.
Rania was silent as the group left the city walls behind. Her eyes lifted to the beautiful trees of Angmar as they easily swept the demons from their path. The elf pulled her daggers and as a demon reached forward toward Mazikeen she sliced forward with quick precision, her blade pierced into the space between the collar bone and the shoulder of the demon, stabbing down into the heart. Rania kicked the demon back and continued on. Her eyes glanced about as she kept a keen eye on their surroundings. She sheathed one of her daggers but kept the other out just in case. She had to be prepared to help in the defense of the group. There was no telling what the demons would do to obtain their victory. She felt the warmth of a hand upon hers, her emerald hues gazed down and a bit of a smile curved up her lips as she gazed to Aela. The squeeze that the young cleric had offered her gave her a sense of hope. “We will put an end to this, I promise.” Rania spoke, her voice soft. The wounds that she had sustained burned with the acid of the demon’s claws, but that only drove her to continue on. She would not stop, not until her last breath escaped her lips. If that was what needed to happen, so be it. She had vowed to protect the wood elves…she had vowed to stop the demons….and so she would. She would give up everything in order to do so.
As the group suddenly came to a stop and Rania saw Mazikeen pull her bow, an arrow already notched and ready to fire. Rania carefully pushed Aela behind her as she drew both blades. “If, anything happens, run Aela. You must run.” She looked to the young cleric, her expression full of a gravity that she had not had before. As her eyes moved back to the rustling of the bushes her blades began to glow orange like a blade within the kiln of a smith shop. She loosened slightly as she saw the unexpected sight of the creatures of the forest, all headed toward the portal. Her head tilted slightly as the glow faded away from her blades. Aroth had summoned the help of the forest. She drew in a breath and nodded. “Any help that the forest offers….will be help that we will need.” She sheathed her daggers once again. Her eyes fell to Esha and the other mages. She worried that the portal would be too much to handle. The demon was so powerful. Her jaw clenched slightly for a moment before she sucked in a careful breath, her hand pressed to her side and she grit her teeth.
They began to move once again. “How far Nicholas?” Rania questioned as she caught up to him. They seemed to be closer now, Rania could feel the pull. The darkness of the portal. It seemed to beckon her, to beg to draw upon her power. Each and every portal that she’d encountered she had felt such a terrible pull deep within her soul. She nodded to Nicholas as he changed direction, the wildlife around them began to become more and more. Rania nearly ran into Nicholas as he held his hand up, she skidded to a stop as her eyes gazed forward. She saw the body before the warrior had even approached it. Her lips pressed together as she drew in a breath. The lives that the demons took. The death and destruction that they left in their wake. She watched as he knelt at the side of the mangled body that barely resembled a human form with so much flesh missing from it.
Rania stepped forward slightly as Nicholas stood, she gave a nod as she looked to the others before she took off behind Nicholas. Her pain seemed to melt away as they drew closer to the portal, her mind was focused on one thing. Ending this. Stopping the greater demon. Closing the portal. She had to stop them. Rania pulled one of her blades as her eyes gazed forward, she knelt next to Nicholas, her eyes gazed to him a moment as he seemed to lose himself. No doubt the pain that he felt with the loss of his friend, she could see it in his eyes. As Nicholas began to speak Rania’s eyes were already glowing with the fires of her magic. “Yes. His wings.” She replied her eyes looked forward. “I want everyone to focus on his wings.” She turned then and gazed to Mazikeen she reached forward and touched the bow, a deep breath drew in as she closed her eyes a moment. The bow took on an orange aura for a moment. She gave a bit of a smile then, “You Mazikeen, I need you to aim for that bastard’s eye sockets, his chest, his neck….all of the soft spots….” She bit her lip slightly as she gazed back to the battlefield. “I will get his attention. I’ll stop him from summoning the lesser demons….”
“Wait…” Esha spoke and reached her hand out, but Rania had already rushed forward.
Rania had done this before many times. She trusted in the group that they would be able to handle shooting the demon’s wings. A lesser demon rushed forward toward her as she ran down into the valley. Rania sliced swiftly across the throat and kicked it back. Rage consumed her. She dodged as a cougar leaped for another demon, her heel pressed into the back of the demon and she launched off of it. “You think you can get away with this?” Rania called out, her voice full of strength.
The greater demon towered over Rania’s form as she stood less than 20 feet from the beast. A deep chuckle came over his lips as he stopped summoning the lesser demons from the portal. “You’re like an insect. A pestilent infection that just seems to follow me around from city to city.” He snickered as he watched her. “How fun to have met you again. I would have thought that you would give up by now.”
“I will not stop.” Rania replied, her breaths quick. She could feel the draw of the portal already. “Not until I have rid Oneus of you for good.” She sheathed her blades, her eyes began to glow with electricity. “I will not let you destroy these people.” Bolts of electricity began to zap out from the mage as her power began to build.
The demon snickered as he rushed forward toward her, easily closing the distance. His wings spread out making an easy target of himself. Rania held her hands forward and electric waves encapsulated the demon causing him to convulse. She leaped back, “Now!” She screamed to the others, her eyes glanced over her shoulder. “Shoot him now!!” She cried. As the high elf turned her eyes back to the demon he lunged forward once again and gripped onto her tightly, a snarl came over his lips. He was far too distracted by his want to kill Rania to notice the group that she had brought with her to put an end to him.

"Meet Your Bane"
Mazikeen of the Angmar Rangers Mazikeen sucked in a breath at the sight of Nicholas’s former companion, his mangled corpse on the ground near them as they stopped. Both Aela and the ranger stepped forward as the human knelt down by the body, offering their support. The young cleric reached forward, resting a hand on Nicholas’s shoulder as he laid his own cloak over his comrade’s body. Mazikeen bowed her head respectfully, then glanced toward the warrior. “I am truly sorry, my friend. His sacrifice will not be in vain.” The ranger nodded towards Nicholas. “When this is over, we can bury him with the others that have fallen.” Aela whispered a small prayer for the man as they all straightened, moving forward towards their destination. The group followed the human warrior through the forest, winding through the tall oak trees. The first assault had happened just as the sun was setting over the trees- it was dark now. The moon provided enough light that everyone could see several yards ahead. As Nicholas and Rania crept forward through the bushes, Genn on their heels, Mazikeen snuck forward as well, peering down at the portal in the valley. Her gaze widened for a moment as she took in the sight before them. The blue portal glowed brightly, pulsing each time another demon was summoned. Several stones with runic symbols carved into their surface protruded out of the ground, circling the magical rift. Demons crawled around everywhere, their unnatural bodies jerking with each movement as the freshly summoned beasts took in their new surroundings. Mazikeen’s gaze landed on the demon commander, and she was finally able to get a good look at him. The black and red creature towered over every demon around him, two large horns adorned his head, his pitch black wings shifting as he continued to summon his army from the portal. As the ranger eyed the demon lord, she noticed that unlike the other creatures they had fought up until this point, this demon was sporting black armor. It looked tough and thick, protecting his chest and shoulders. His arms were unclothed, as well as his neck and face, Mazikeen observed. Those would be the places to strike after his wings were incapacitated. The portal cast enough light that the entire clearing was visible- the magic tinted the forest floor blue. Mazikeen looked to Keelan, nodding for him to draw his longbow as well. The two archers along with Aela shifted to the left, while the mages and Faerin remained behind Rania and Nicholas. Mazikeen eyed her bow’s new enchantment, courtesy of Rania, a barely detectable layer of orange magic danced along its edge. Everyone jumped slightly as the creatures of the forest rushed out of the trees, launching an attack on the lesser demons in the area. The pack of coyotes howled as they leapt into the fray, latching their jaws onto the limbs of the creatures, tearing at their flesh. The large buck from earlier lowered its head as it charged, hooking its antlers into a demon and yanked upwards, sending the beast flying off to the side. Genn let out a soft whine, impatiently waiting for a command. Just then Rania charged forward, entering the valley. The demon lord ceased casting as he eyed the high elf with hatred, and they began exchanging words. Both Keelan and Mazikeen nocked an arrow, aiming for the demon’s neck. As the great demon rushed forward and grabbed Rania, Mazikeen saw movement out of the corner of her eye. Nicholas was preparing to lead the mages and Faerin forward, all of them in a battle stance. At Rania’s call, the team rushed forward, charging into the valley with Nicholas at the head, shouting out cries of war. Mazikeen and Keelan fired in unison, both of their arrows sinking into the demon lord’s neck. The ranger’s arrow burst into flame as it entered the demon’s flesh, and he howled in annoyance. The demon lord tossed Rania aside, reaching up to his neck to rip out the arrows. Aela gasped and immediately broke cover, rushing out to where Rania landed on the ground. The young cleric dodged around the lesser demons battling the creatures of the forest, reaching the high elf and helped her over to the edge of the clearing. Nicholas and the wood elves fought their way through the lesser demons in front of them, making their way to the commander. Genn expertly moved with the warriors, lunging in after a successful sword swing from the men to finish off the enemy. Mazikeen and Keelan worked in perfect harmony, as all rangers of Angmar did, sinking arrows into the eye sockets and necks of any lesser demons that endangered the team as they neared the portal. Esha, Feera, and the two other mages held hands, chanting in unison behind Nicholas and Faerin. Dark clouds gathered in the night sky, and a large beam of white light struck down from the skies, engulfing the demon lord for a moment. As the beam disappeared, the commander roared, blinking in confusion as he recovered from the blinding moon beam. Nicholas wasted no time as the commander shook his head, trying to regain his bearings. The human’s sword apparitions appeared behind the commander, and with perfect precision, sliced both of his wings clean off. The demon commander bellowed in pain, falling to one knee. He shook himself as black blood dripped from the open wounds on his back. Straightening, the fearsome demon grabbed a hilt on his black belt. As he held it forward, the air near the hilt sucked inward, and a magical flaming blade burst into existence. The demon lord sneered, swinging down at the group. Faerin rushed forward and brought his elven blade up to block the attack, and the clash of the two blades rang out across the clearing. As Nicholas and Faerin took on the demon lord, the four Valendran mages moved into a circular formation, and per Esha’s instruction, sent forth bolts of fire and ice magic at the lesser demons. Mazikeen nudged Keelan, nodding that they should move closer. Keelan leapt gracefully down into the clearing, somersaulting forward, slamming back a demon with his bow as he landed on his feet. Aela looked over Rania near the tree line, knowing she must have sustained several injuries. She did not have the time to heal the mage’s wounds, the group needed Rania now. The young cleric searched the high elf’s eyes, making up her mind. “Miss Rania, you are of far greater use here than I am. Please do not resist what I offer to you now.” Aela placed both of her hands on the high elf’s shoulders, and began whispering an incantation. The young cleric’s brows furrowed as she poured some of her magic into Rania, giving up as much of her power as she could bear. The high elf’s skin glowed as Aela transferred her magic, and the cleric fell to her knees. “Go now,” she whispered to Rania. “Help them finish this.” Aela drug herself over to the tree, resting against it so she could regain some of her strength while the rest continued to fight. Mazikeen loosed another arrow, sinking it into the demon lord’s forearm when she felt a nudge on her thigh. The ranger startled, eyeing a jaguar that had crept up next to her. The black majestic feline growled softly, looking towards the clearing. Mazikeen followed its gaze, spotting another jaguar entering the clearing from the other direction, leaping onto a demon and immediately crushing the creature’s skull with its powerful jaws. The ranger was unsure what the creature was trying to tell her, but she was confident the beast was here answering Aroth’s call. The jaguar’s emerald gaze had a spark of intelligence that Mazikeen did not see in many of the creatures from the forest. She knew the cat was not here to harm her. The jaguar laid down, looking at its back and then to Mazikeen. The ranger tentatively grasped the large cat’s scruff, swinging a leg over the beast. The second Mazikeen straddled the jaguar, the feline leapt up, and bolted around the edge of the clearing. The ranger yelped, throwing her bow onto her back and grabbing onto the cat’s scruff with her other hand. The jaguar expertly weaved through the trees and brush, silently carrying her to the back of the clearing, unnoticed by the enemy in the dark of night. Mazikeen’s heart pounded, she had never ridden anything other than an Angmar steed. The experience was exhilarating. The jaguar slowed as it neared the portal at the back of the clearing, with the demon lord directly in front of them. The ranger watched the demon lord swing forward with his flaming sword, meeting Nicholas’s blade with another loud clash. Mazikeen understood now what the feline’s intentions were. The ranger left one hand on the scruff of the beast, and drew her ice dagger with the other. The jaguar crouched, slinking forward silently into the clearing. Mazikeen lowered herself as close to the feline as she could, its soft fur brushing her skin. After a few moments of calculated silence, the jaguar bounded forward, carrying Mazikeen right towards the demon lord. As the feline neared the commander, it let out a piercing snarl- pushing off the ground with its muscular legs, leaping onto his back. The jaguar sank its claws into the demon lord’s exposed upper back, and plunged its jaws into his neck. Mazikeen clutched onto the cat with her hand, keeping her legs wrapped tightly around its torso as she drove her ice dagger into the demon lord’s neck with a cry of her own. The demon lord howled in pain and surprise, violently shaking, attempting to dislodge the jaguar. The feline bit down once more, and Mazikeen yanked out her ice dagger, taking a second to admire the icy puncture wound she had left behind. The lithe cat pushed off the great demon, landing with a thud, and leapt away as the demon lord’s sword came crashing down at the spot they were just in. The jaguar carried Mazikeen to the edge of the clearing, stopping near the trees. The ranger hopped off the beast, keeping her hand on its scruff for a moment as the wood elf and beast eyed each other. Mazikeen bowed her head in thanks, and the jaguar mimicked her. With a snarl, the feline took off in a black streak, charging in to help its fellow feline dispatch another demon with its jaws. Mazikeen jogged forward to where Aela sat near a tree, the young cleric looked extremely tired, but was unscathed. The ranger was just about to speak to her when she heard a deep voice call out. The demon lord looked battered, black blood oozing from wounds all over his body. A spark of hope lit Mazikeen’s chest, they were going to defeat him. The demon commander’s menacing voice carried over the clearing. “Fools! You know nothing of our might. You have yet to see the hell we will bring upon this world.” The demon lord turned, thrusting a burly, bloody hand towards the portal behind him. The great demon said a word that was rough on Mazikeen’s ears, a foul language. The portal responded to the demon’s call, pulsing so brightly the ranger had to look away. A large, dark form stalked out of the portal, and at first Mazikeen had no idea what she was looking at. A demonic two-headed lion strode forward, with a large scorpion tail clicking unnaturally as the creature walked. The large beast was covered in dark red fur until its mid-torso, where black scaly skin covered the rest of the creature to its venomous tail. The whole group stood there frozen, taking in the sight of the demonic chimera. The large beast let out a roar, stopping next to its master, eyeing the group with unsettling red eyes. The wounded demon commander let out a sneer, his gaze traveling to the mages. “Meet your bane, a Soul Eater.” The great demon moved his hand towards the ground, casting some sort of spell that Mazikeen did not recognize. Her body instantly felt extremely heavy, and she sunk to her knees, unable to fight against the invisible force holding her down. The ranger’s head was the only part of her body that she could move, and she turned to see that the rest of her comrades were in the same predicament. The demon commander spoke another harsh word, and the chimera turned its heads towards the closest mage, Feera. The two-headed beast moved forward a few paces, stopping in front of the wood elf- its large body casting a shadow over her kneeled frame. The chimera slowly opened both sets of its jaws, and glowing red magic formed in both of the heads’ mouths. A blue light grew from Feera’s chest in response, her magic flowing down her arms and to her fingertips. As the jaws of the chimera widened, the mage’s blue magic left both her hands, and in two streams, the chimera began to suck the mage’s power from her. Mazikeen watched in horror, completely trapped as Feera let out a gasp. The mage’s eyelids began to flutter as the chimera stole more of her power. The beast seemed to grow larger in front of the ranger’s eyes as it inhaled Feera’s magic. Mazikeen struggled helplessly, unable to break the magic bond trapping her. The chimera demon dug its claws into the ground, savoring the taste of the wood elf’s magic- its long scorpion tail undulating in pleasure. The wounded demon lord let out a harsh, gravelly laugh. “We will rid this world of magic.” The mage’s head started to droop, her power was waning. Mazikeen shouted in desperation, “Rania, Nicholas- do something!”
