Where…am I?
Emptiness. White and total blank emptiness. What was there was just sounds, a feeling. Combat boots click on a polished white floor. That sound echoed against walls that could never be found. The smell of fresh printed newspaper… and a sort of dampness that stuck to the skin. That was all that could be gathered…
What the… fuck?
He came to be then, a slender figure standing in the midst of emptiness. He was tall with broad shoulders, his physical appearance was generic, nothing of him screamed of potential. He had messy white hair that seemed in need of a trim, and round thin glasses. No doubt if he took them off – he would see nothing but blur and confusion. Though, it seemed to matter not in this plain of universe. He had read enough books to know that something was wrong, even if this was a dream…
He continued to walk around for some time, thoughts came to him now. At first he felt to be some puppet of a person, nothing but his eyes to peer forward, his perfectly blue hues of crystal. He walked, and he walked, and he walked.
Something finally appeared. A single sign seemed to float in the air, like a television. It flickered on and words appeared upon it. ‘Welcome, Vayne.’ He stepped up to the screen and then crossed his arms, blue eyes reading over the words. “Hello?” he questioned softly. His words were just whispers in the air, slipping away into the thin atmosphere above. All white.
“Can you tell me… where I am?” he questioned.
‘No’
“Useful… what.. can you tell me, what is your purpose here?” he questioned. He felt as if he sat before his gamebox, controller in hand. Selections appearing before him. It was all too fabricated to feel real. This, it couldn’t be.
‘It is game time’
Vayne shifted back slightly in surprise. “The hell?” he was just thinking something along those lines. “What – what do you mean?”
‘Are you a hero?’
Vayne’s lips pressed into a thin line and he fixed his stance. He tilted his head to the side and shook his head. “No” he shrugged slightly. “Maybe”
‘You are now’
“I don’t understand” he scoffed then, his brows pulling together tightly.
‘You will’
“Mother fucker” Vayne threw his hand.
‘Don’t forget, you’re the Hero’ the screen flashed and then faded to darkness. The screen then seemed to power down.
The air about him became static like, colors of all kinds seem to swarm him. He held his hands up – as if to block an attack. The world meshed in upon him and only his drowning shout could be heard in the distance, like a train passing by.
Vayne slowly stood – he held his hands out before him. Something felt different. He looked around and felt a sudden shove. “Hey-“ he turned swiftly. People were all around him, moving in every direction – blurs of color on either side.
“Get out of the way pal” another shove. Vayne stumbled several times until he hit a wall. His back was pressed against a glass window of a store. He turned around and placed two hands upon the glass, as if to mold himself to it and stay safe. He glanced inside – it was a small bakery…
Vayne stepped inside swiftly and shut the door behind him. “Yeesh..” he slowly stepped inside.
“First time in Valeton?” A woman questioned, she had a petite and small voice – about as small as she was. She wore an apron and tended to the counter.
“Um, yeah. Actually. It’s… wow” he turned back and glanced to the sidewalk which hurried along.
“You should get a cup of coffee and relax a little” she chuckled and looked up to the menu above him.
“Oh, right” he smiled weakly and approached the counter. With two hands upon it he peered to the chalk sign above. “Hmm…” he shook his head. “I… Don’t know what to order” what was a Latte? “How about your favorite then?” he smirked.
The woman laughed and nodded “Okay, I’ll make it a surprise, okay?” she moved to a fridge and opened it, gathering a handful of liquids and such.
“Oh uh, do I owe you?” he questioned.
“Oh… consider it a gift, maybe something to change your mind about Valeton” she smirked and quickly moved about, filling a cup with milk and then coffee. “Where are you from then?” she questioned.
“Oh um…” he gripped his forehead then. You’re the hero
“Come here” she called Vayne over. He stepped closer and stared to the girl. She looked him dead in the eye “Did someone hurt you?” she whispered.
“I uh – no, I’m fine. I’m just… It’s not a place you’d know. Little place, few hours west”
“Few hours west is the ocean, bud.” The woman laughed as she finished the drink. She had flaming red hair and freckles splattered across her cheeks. “Here” she set the drink down and then she held a finger up, the number 1. She then skipped to the back….
Vayne gripped the drink and turned it about in his hands. He lifted it slowly and took a sip – it was a splash of joy over his tongue. “Wha-“ he smirked and took another sip. As he did, the woman returned to the front. She had taken her apron off and waved him over to a booth.
Vayne followed behind her and then slid in across from her. “This is really good, thank you” he smirked.
“What is your name?” she questioned. “Mine is Maryl” she held a hand forward to shake.
“Oh, Vayne” he glanced to her hand, and then he took it slowly and shook it. An old custom… he let go and then crossed his arms upon the table, leaning on it slightly. “So, uh. Are you guys hiring, maybe?”
“You don’t have a job either?” she questioned and then leaned back suddenly, her mouth agape. “Do you have a home?”
Vayne tilted his head and thought for a second. He reached to his pocket and pulled out a set of keys. He set it down and stared to it “Guess so” he pulled a wallet out of his pocket and opened it. An address upon an ID… So yeah, a home.
“Okay, Vayne…” she reached forward and grasped his wallet. She stared to his ID and then hummed. “Hmm, you’re not too far actually! This street…. Its over by that little park, I remember” she handed the wallet back. “Okay, so… now time to just figure out what happened to you… do you hurt anywhere?” she questioned.
“No, no I don’t, Um, I’m a little tired, but” he held the cup up. “You fixed that already, Maryl” he smirked and took another sip.
“Well… if you really need a job, we do have a position open. Just to bake and run the cash register, nothing you can’t be taught… what do you say?” she questioned.
Vayne smirked “Alright, I accept your job offer”
“I knew you’d say that” she smirked and tilted her head. “Okay, come back tomorrow then. 9am sharp. Wear… whatever you got, it doesn’t matter. Clothes and shoes required” she leaned back.
“Okay, I’ll be here” he stood up and then looked to Maryl as she sat in the booth. He then bowed before her and nodded.
“You are- adorable” she laughed and then nodded. “Go on then” she watched him leave.
Vayne stepped to the door and dropped his mug into the dish collection zone. A little machine took the mug and it disappeared behind a door. “Huh” he nodded and smirked. He looked through the glass of the door – the people… he stepped through the door and merged swiftly into the rush of people.
He traversed several blocks until he came upon a small park. Lush green grass and and absolutely huge oak tree stood in the center. The oak had colors glistening from its leaves, an array of the rainbow sparkling to his hues. Wow he smiled and then he pulled his wallet back up…
Soon he stood at the doors of an apartment complex, just a huge building that seem to go sky high. As he looked up – he saw something. A ship… in the air?! He gasped and stumbled back into someone. “YO!” someone shouted and threw him back forward. He hit the stairs of the apartment complex.. as he gathered himself he opened the door and rushed in to escape. He breathed heavily and leaned against the wall for a second.
“Kashi!” a voice came from the top of the stairs. “I was wondering when you’d be back!” a woman rushed down the stairs and threw her arms around him.
“Oh – hey” he faked and hugged her back. Who? Is this
“Well, good news. Queso is healthy and fine, and you – owe me the 50 credits” she pat his back. “But, I gotta go, so big bro. All you” she rushed out the door. He thought for a second.. she also had white hair.
“Kashi?” he pulled his wallet back up. Takashi Amane. Who – who was this?! The girl, at the bakery, she didn’t even say anything to him? Who the hell is that girl?! “Where..” the world spun slightly. “Where AM I?” his voice shouted in the thundering stairwell. It took a moment to gather himself, but through a deep sniff he forced himself to. A game… he bit his lip slightly and then rushed up the stairs.
With the key in his hand – he found the right door. Only after trying a bunch of doors, some people yelled at him. He shouted sorry, oops – wrong place! Until one gave. He stumbled into a studio apartment. There was a scattering sound of paws and claws upon the floor. Suddenly he was tackled by a fluffy little 30 pound dog. It was an all orange dog that resembled a kind of Shiba Inu.
Vayne – no… Kashi, he wrapped his arms about the dog, that had jumped up to his chest. He laughed, as if he knew the dog for years. And suddenly – he felt something. A merging of warmth and pure freezing cold in his chest. He paused and looked to the dog – who panted and wiggled in his arms. “Alright alright” he set the dog down. The dog did several circles “Queso, huh? What a name” he laughed. “Show me around, Queso” he stepped forward and set the keys on the kitchen counter.
The apartment was small, the kitchen was immediately to the right, and was open into the living room. A small coffee table, no dining table at all… a couch that opened up into a bed. There was a guitar in the corner… and then… apparently his armory. He stood before a single large wall – it had about 5 different huge swords upon it. “Damn…” he touched the blade of one. But one called out to him..
He approached this blade. It was a blue blade with a dragon as a hilt. The blade it self was smooth with an insane edge. Within the blade was a swirling blue color, sort of like the ocean. Bubbles moved about in it with its own life, it radiated some kind of energy. As he grasped it – a wave of that energy flowed with in him. “Whoa” he lifted the blade off the wall. It was light in his grip, but it still had enough weight. He swung it and it seem to just.. .fit perfectly. There was a natural instinct that came to him.
“Who… is Takashi?” he questioned and laughed. He put the blade back, as if it was not his. Like he was invading someone’s home. The real Takashi would come back, some outstanding hero – no doubt. This – was a hero’s home? He glanced down – Queso wiggled at his feet. “A walk buddy?” he questioned and smirked.
Soon enough he had the little dog hooked up to a leash he found. As he stepped outside he was approached by a figure. “Takashi Amane, here is your next target” he was handed an envelope. The man was gone.
Takashi pulled his brows together – his heart thud loudly in his chest. ~~WHAT~~ he paused. Queso pulled against the leash, they were so close to the grass outside. He did not move – he slowly opened the letter and pulled a card out. “No” he shook his head. I’m not a murderer… he slipped the letter away quickly. Queso finally lifted a leg and pissed on Takashi’s boots.
“Wha – you bastard” he shook his boot suddenly and then hurried the dog to a patch of grass… “Also, what kind of name is Queso?!” he questioned. The dog looked up to him and yipped happily and did a quick circle around the pile of poop he laid. Kashi fiddled with a little roll of bags, and then he leaned down with a bag in and hand and picked it up. He stared up once more to the glittering tree… The dog pulled him then forward into the park, he followed the dog – bag of dog poop in hand.
The longer he breathed the air here. The more it seemed familiar. Slowly the thought of Vayne slipped away in the far reaches of his mind. Kashi… Takashi. Queso yipped and pulled him towards another dog. He glanced up and then he saw something – a woman. It came to him in sudden waves – memories. All of them.
The woman. She stood at the Oak tree, a hand upon the bark of the tree. She smiled and tilted her head. She then waved to him. “Queso – “ he clicked at the dog and approached the tree. In all reality, there was no one here. The park was empty.
“Liliana” he reached forward. His hand slipped past the mirage of a woman. She projected herself to him.
Kashi…. I don’t know how much longer I can do this… her voice rang in his head. She spoke to him, telepathically.
“Lili, no, I… I almost have enough” he shook his head. He wasn’t close. He needed 500,000 credits to pay the ransom. He didn’t know to who. Or what they were doing to her. All he knew is that his girlfriend was captured. There was a post on the bounty board, directed straight to him. Whoever did it – knew they would see it…
I love you, Kashi. her voice was broken.
A sudden wave of emotion came over him. He was struck because... it wasn’t his. It was some one else. Kashi. The upset energy turned to anger. He could strike them down with a single blow.. but at the risk of Liliana dying? He couldn’t dare. He had to pick up more bounties… or..
“Queso, let’s go” he rushed home and dropped the dog off. He grabbed his jacket and took off running down the road. The soles of his boots grew hot as he finally came to a stop, standing before yet another huge building. Though, now he had this sense of direction. The buildings started to make sense… He pushed the door open and rushed to the front table.
Kashi approached the front desk and nodded to the woman. “Hi-“ he cleared his throat. “I would like to schedule a meeting with the um, whomever is in charge of this.. establishment… for a potential business opportunity…” he smiled and set his ID on the table. Takashi Amane, world famous Bounty Hunter. He was known for a number of legendary kills. He killed the Fade Drake which leveled an entire city some time ago, and various other kills. A legend, come to grovel.
He would not say his reasoning, only that he was in need of an advancement, for an agreement of a certain number of bounties. No matter if it was far or close, scrubbing dishes or whatever. It was humiliating to do such a thing, but he had little choice. As he pondered his tactic – he slid a hand through hair to adjust it. He could see his reflection slightly in the metallic wall behind the woman at the desk. What he saw wasn't exactly the Vayne he remembered. His hair was styled perfectly, his jaw was a little sharper, his cheek bones slightly higher... he looked piercing, suave, dashing maybe even. Not Vayne - the dork, lame skinny kid... no Kashi was muscular and emulated power as a whole. Seeing this man - made him feel suddenly as if he was some imposter... Kashi took in a deep breath and let it go slowly, waiting to hear back from the lady about his request...
