Jules reached her hand forward, grabbing Melani’s backpack. She gave a small smile and a chuckle, “I would much rather you be with me, we would have had to find another way around if Hugo was with me.” She looked to the cliff then and sighed, “I worry we may be doing quite a bit of this and we don’t have much rope...” She drew her brows together as she checked the line. Jules slipped down behind Melani quickly. She landed and unhooked herself. She stepped forward to the old mine cart, her eyes looked over the elevator shaft that was falling apart. Pieces lay in the open cavern from up above.
Jules looked to the water and the beautiful hues of blue and green beneath the crystal clear water. She smiled, “Such a beautiful thing to be hidden all the way down here, huh?” She then looked ahead. She stepped to the wooden support beam. Her brows drew together, “It must be the government.” She nodded, agreeing with Melani.
There was a low rumble from ahead of them in the cavern. Jules listened, “Thunder...?” She questioned, her eyes staring into the darkness of the huge tunnel. No. Not thunder. Jules looked down as the pebbles upon the ground rumbled slightly. “Explosives...” She whispered. “Charlie was right...” She nodded, her jaw tight. Her pulse quickened slightly as another rumble came echoing down the tunnel. The ground beneath them shifted slightly. Jules quickened her pace slightly as she walked down the tunnel. “What could they be trying to get that Charlie can’t provide them?” She questioned. “Why wouldn’t they just force him to retrieve it, he has enough man power...”
Jules tripped then over something on the ground. She stumbled forward and caught her footing. She turned back, her eyes fell on the bones of a skeleton, an old miner. His helmet was still on his head, cobwebs laced over the thick metal of the helmet. She took in a shaken breath, the miner had a gaping hole in the side of his head, his skull was shattered...from a gunshot possibly? Jules took a step back and stumbled over another skeleton. She yelped as she fell to her back landing next to it. She scrambled to her feet and stared at the bones, a gun was still wedged in the hand of the miner...he too had a hole in the side of his head. Suicide? The tunnel had collapsed, the elevator shaft was ruined...it made sense...they were trapped...but for how long? How many died when the tunnel systems collapsed.
Jules turned quickly, another explosion. The ground rumbled again. Jules looked up as a few small rocks came from the ceiling of the tunnel. “Mel!” She cried and lunged forward. A large rock came from the ceiling toppling toward Melani. Jules wrapped her arms around her pushing her out of the way. She turned and her back hit the wall, Jules stared to Melani, she swallowed as a few other rocks came from the ceiling. “We need to move.” She spoke her eyes watching as the ceiling of the tunnel began to crumble. “Come on.” She cried as she grabbed Melani’s hand. Jules rushed forward down the tunnel, rocks fell around them and a dust began to kick up. The sound of a collapse behind them came like an explosion. Dust rushed forward. Jules yanked Melani ahead of her and kept running. She yelped as something slammed against her leg.
Jules grit her teeth as she ran forward, the rumbling began to slow. She limped as they began to slow down. “Damnit...” She winced as they came to an open crevasse. It split perpendicular to where they were. Cables reached down into the crevasse, a bridge was once here...possibly before the last explosion. Jules looked down to her leg, she could see the red thick liquid of her blood. It stung. Jules stood near the edge of the cliff, she couldn’t see the bottom. She pushed a small rock forward off the edge. It took several seconds before it finally collided with the cold hard surface of the rocks below. Jules glanced back to the tunnel, it was caved in...
She looked to Melani then, her eyes showed her pain. Though it was evident that she was trying to stay strong, trying to ignore the stabbing feeling in her leg. “We have to get...across...” She nodded. Jules looked to the gap again, it was easily 20 feet or so. She took in a shaken breath. “Agatha made me free climb a few times...I called her insane every time she had me do it...” She pulled her pack off and began to rummage through it. She’d grabbed several expandable anchors. The type that are placed between cracks of rock to create a sturdy hold. Jules looked to the gap again, “I’m not sure I have much more of a choice here.” She spoke softly and looked to Melani a long moment. “I want this damn thing off so we can stop your father...stop the government...” She took a step and grit her teeth. Blood trickled down her leg. “Okay...” She nodded to herself as she looked at the ceiling. She reached up with one of the anchors in hand and released it. “Here goes nothing...” She muttered to herself.
Jules carefully clipped several of the anchors along her harness for easy access. She tied off a rope into the first anchor above her head. She then reached up, about a foot forward and placed another one before she carefully laced the rope. She ran the rope through her harness, if she fell, this would stop her from falling to her death at least. Jules closed her eyes a moment before she pulled another anchor. She gripped onto the one above her, lifting herself up. Her grip strength was strong from working on cars. Agatha always told her she’d make an incredible climber from all the work she did with her hands in the shop. Jules sung forward, she slammed her hand up against the ceiling and released the anchor, it gripped onto the rocks. She was now suspended over the crevasse. Her breathing trembled as she moved about. She would lace the rope with one hand while hanging from the other. She would move and then hang from the rope for a few seconds before she would hold herself up by her hands again. Jules made it to the other side and she placed her hands on her knees, sweat beaded on her brow, she rubbed her sore hands. The way she’d run the line Melani would just have to hook in and pull herself across. Agatha showed her this technique...thankfully, and she’d made her do it several times until she was proficient at it.
Another rumble came from ahead of them. Jules glanced down the cavern. “Mel...I think I can see light...” She spoke as she stared ahead. She turned and held the rope tight. “Come on.” She nodded. “Straight across.” She gave a reassuring smile.
Jules fed the line pulling it, keeping it tight as Melani crossed. She gave a smile once she’d made it. She then turned, she reached up to her light and clicked it off. Footsteps. She reached forward and turned Melani’s off as well.
“That’s about it.” A man spoke. “What does the commander request that we do once we pull the last of the Zen?”
“Collapse the tunnel, there can be no evidence of us here.” Another replied.
“Of course sir.” Their footsteps led away.
Jules looked to Melani with worried eyes. “The last of the Zen?” She questioned. She took in a deep breath, there was a rumble from ahead again. “We don’t have much time before this place is going to fall in on us...there has to be somewhere else, somewhere they’ve missed...” She breathed.

Melani stepped to the edge and watched Jules - struck with awe - her jaw loosened. This woman was way stronger than she appeared, what she was doing now was something she couldn’t dream of doing. She wondered then if Agatha ever had feelings for Jules... it seemed everything she could do - Agatha taught her. She sucked in a breath - she shook the thoughts from her head, she wasn’t even sure why she was thinking them.
Once Jules finished - Melani clipped herself to the rope and then took in a deep breath. She easily shimmied her way across the gap and then unclasped herself, to land back on the ground. She ducked then as a flashlight shone in the distance, she knelt down and listened to the words of the man. There were several feet clattering. She tried to count them.
“Easily 8 men... We couldn’t take them out...” She shook her head. She then glanced up and noticed several small holes drilled into the ceiling. “They’re going to level this whole area” she grasped Jules. “We need to go” she lead her forward.
They dashed through the tunnel - she suddenly skid to a stop. “Dead end” she grumbled. She turned then and the entire place began to rumble and shake. Explosions were going off in the far distance. “Shit” she grit her teeth and then turned back around. Her eyes looked to the stone wall briefly - she noticed something.
“Wait” she whispered and she stepped forward. Her finger traced a crack in the wall, but this crack was perfect, like it was cut, rounded to the ceiling. And another on the other side. “This is a door” she looked around quickly.
A skull lay embedded into the ground. Carved in the forehead of it was a triangle. She leaned down - just as more explosion went off, closer now. She turned her head back to watch the tunnel beginning to shake, bits crumbling down. Melani swiftly pushed her finger against the triangle. Just like that the door began to move.
It scraped on the ground and opened, partially - just enough for them to squeeze through. “Come on!” She grasped Jules and she moved inside.
The shaking got worse - just as Jules came inside, rocks began to hit the ground on the other side. They would have been buried and pummeled to death. She stumbled back and turned around.
The stood on a stone platform, it had several archways that allowed them to look forward. A open stream cascade down a completely brick tunnel. “Wow...” Melani looked down the tunnel - it was at an incline. “This must be that temple?” She questioned and looked to the pillars. They were decorated with beautiful signs and hieroglyphics. “They managed to collect water from the mountain and syphon it downward, I bet if we follow this water - it will lead us. I can bet they didn’t mine this area, if seemed very well hidden... But - We have no way out now, we will have to manage that...” She sucked in a deep breath....

Jules looked up as well, her eyes looking to the dynamite holes. Before she could say anything Melani tugged her forward. They were in a sprint through the tunnels. “This is a dead end!” Jules cried as rocks tumbled from explosives near them. Then moments later she was pulled into the tunnel behind the hidden door. Her eyes stared ahead to the intricate markings, the stairway leading down with the aqueduct feeding water down along the stairs.
Jules glanced around a bit, a skeleton lay against the wall. “We have to be careful.” She spoke as she stepped forward. A piece of the tunnel beneath her foot gave away. Jules heard a scraping sound. She jumped back, running into Melani, her arms wrapped around her as sharpened metal rods shot from the walls. Her heart pounded. “I think...we have much more to worry about than just getting out of here...” She whispered.
Jules looked to Melani for a moment before she took in a breath and stepped forward. They descended down the tunnel, her eyes watched for more of the loose bricks. The design was intricate...it must have taken years...how old was this place? What was this place?
After several minutes of walking down the hallway they came to another apparent dead end. Jules pulled her brows together, “I...bet...” She glanced around. Her fingers ran over the inscriptions upon the walls, it was a language she’d never seen before. She let out a long breath as she pressed in a piece of the wall. Once again the rock before them slid from its place. Jules watched as the door revealed a large dark room. Though there was a clicking sound. She took a careful step forward just as flames lit on torches. “Oh...” Jules watched as torches lined a winding staircase, beneath it the water ran cascading down into the cavern.
As the torches lit buildings became visible, Jules’ jaw dropped. “Wh....this isn’t a tomb...” She breathed. Buildings lined the water below a huge lake within the cavern. Jules walked down the stairs toward the city, she winced slightly. She held her wrist, it was hot as if coals were wrapped around it. She pulled the gauntlet off. “I....don’t think they found this place...” She grit her teeth. “There’s Zen...somewhere...” Her arm felt like it was on fire.
Jules tucked her gauntlet into her backpack and walked forward, the glowing intensified. She winced slightly, the sensation from the bracelet was nearly unbearable. As they neared what looked to be the center of town she saw a statue, carved of Zen. It was a man standing with a sword and shield. “How...much...Zen is that...?” She questioned. It had to be a lot, several veins worth. The statue seemed to glow from the light of the torches. “What is this place, Mel?” She looked around to the beautiful homes. It wasn’t a large city, but a few hundred people could have lived there at one time.

Melani gasped loudly - her fingers wrapping around Jules’s arms to steady her. “Shit!” She heaved loudly as her eyes peered to the sharp pointed spears. The gears began to move, she could hear them behind the wall, and the spears retracted. Ready to spring again.
“I would say... we are not invited... huh?” She whispered and then followed Jules as they followed down the steps. Her eyes fell to the stream of water that followed along side them - it was crystal clear. She wondered if it had gone through a charcoal scrub, or something.. Maybe that was just the freshness of mountain water.
She turned her gaze to the huge opening. The water fell down several levels of pools, until it filled the bottom of the huge cavern. There were buildings and streets that were above the water. The buildings were of ancient stone and quartz, beautiful in design. Though wear and tear of age was evident, and architecture that did not belong to anything in the recent 500 years. “Wow... just how... old is this place?” She questioned..
They climbed down the stairs and came upon the center of the temple. A green glowing statue.. She came upon it, Jules by her side. “Wow...this obviously isn’t the catacombs, but it would make sense for there to be one. No, this is a hidden city... The catacombs likely the resting place of those who lived here... This means all of this has been completely undiscovered. I bet some of those tunnels we were in earlier were made by these people, and the mine shaft came upon them?” She questioned and she lifted her hand to the Zen.
She placed her finger onto the knee of the statue. She felt a sensation flow through her body. “This hosts so much natural magic... even I can feel it...” She sucked in a deep breath. “This is more Zen then I’ve ever seen in my life, and it is beautiful. Who ever carved this... should be remembered for life...” She whispered and shook her head. “I would hate to damage this...” She took in a breath. “But I must. I don’t need much. Perhaps just his little toe?” She questioned as she glanced down to the carvings foot.
She pulled her pick axe and held it up. With a swift movement - she cracked the pickaxe at the toe of the statue and it easily broke off. Melani leaned down and picked it up and rolled it in her fingers. Even it’s nail was carved, little lines in the nail as cracking... it was amazingly detailed. She slipped the Zen away.
Suddenly the floor gave way. Melani shouted out - her hand reached to Jules as they fell. They crashed onto stone floor. Melani glanced up - the doors above them closed. “Ouch... are you okay?” She questioned. They hadn’t fallen far...
“The statue.. must have been on a pressure plate. Any change in it’s weight... to catch thief...” She sighed deeply. “Damnit...” she stood up and clicked her light on. “It looks like... there is a path....” She grunted as she turned to Jules. “Careful.. I am sure this place is very trapped...”

Jules glanced around, her hand held her wrist. She had a strange sensation that bubbled up in her body as she stood closer to the statue. Her eyes watched as Melani pulled the pickaxe. “The buildings are so beautiful...and pristine...” She turned just as the floor gave out. Jules let out a cry as she fell through the trap door. She landed roughly and yelped slightly. Jules lay on her back, her eyes looking up to the now closed trap door. She gasped in a breath, the air was knocked from her lungs from the fall. She gave a nod to Melani as she stood. “I’m...okay...you?” She asked as she dusted herself off. She looked ahead to the tunnel before them.
She clicked her own flashlight on as the sound of gears turning and clanking into place echoed into the chamber. Jules glanced as she heard a bit of the stone slide away. Water began to rush into the room. “We don’t have time to be careful...” She looked to the floor as water began to pool around her feet. “We need to move!” She rushed forward. That was the whole purpose of the chamber, to drive the thief forward.
The sound of the rushing water intensified as more doors opened allowing water to rush in. Jules ran down the hallway, soon enough the water was up to her waist...
“Look!” Jules cried out, she pointed ahead, there was a small gap ahead of them. The water continued to rise as she swam forward. Jules reached up and pulled herself onto the ledge. “Come on.” She grabbed a hold of Melani and hoisted her up. Jules turned as more clicking sounded the water beneath them began to recede. Though now they were 15 to 20 feet above the floor.
Jules turned and aimed her flashlight around. Murals on the walls depicted mages of great power heading into this underground for...safety? It showed a battle above ground, machines on one side, mages on the other. Jules ran her fingertips over the old paint. “This war between mages and mechs has been going on for quite a long time...hasn’t it?” She turned and walked forward. “I don’t know much of the history behind mages...the mechs have destroyed or locked away almost all of it.” Her voice was a bit harsh. “Just as the truth behind my family was locked away...” She sighed softly. She paused then and knelt down. “Tripwire.” She spoke, the wire gleamed in the beam from her flashlight. “If we didn’t have our flashlights.” She shook her head. She took a step back and sliced through it with her pickaxe. She glanced ahead, a skeleton lay on the floor. Sharp pointed spears stabbed forward from the walls.
Jules stood her eyes looking to the spears, the wood was stained red with blood. “It seems many have come through this passage and not succeeded hm?” She questioned and looked to Melani. She stepped forward slowly as the spears retracted into the walls. She reached down and grabbed something from the skeleton, a pack. She pulled it open and slipped a small journal from within it.
I have been searching for them for years, at first this was just a job, just another form of income. Find the mages, get paid. But the more I’ve learned of them, the more I want to find these mages. To find them and the power that they hold...it will be the turning point for the war. We can harness the power of these mages and once and for all we will have control. To live in a world that Mechs rise high over all creatures, Dr. Kunac claims to have created a device to draw the power from the mages...to control them. It’s still in the early stages, but if I can convince one or two mages to come with me. As long as I can trick one into leaving the city...
Though, finding them is another story. I can hear things in these caverns, though, my mind could be playing tricks on me. When I find them, I don’t know how well they will welcome me...
Jules drew her brows together and shook her head slightly. She’d read the passage out loud. “It seems he didn’t fair well with the city.” She let out a soft laugh. She turned and continued forward then. The tunnels that they were in were much like a labyrinth. They came to dead end after dead end. They were going in circles. After almost an hour of slipping through the catacombs Jules leaned against the wall. Her injured leg was throbbing, her stomach growled. “Can we take a rest? Maybe that will help us find the way...” She slid down the wall and sat.
“We are missing something...” She shook her head. “It’s another hidden wall...or something...” She drew her brows together. “What was so special about the mages here?” She questioned softly. “Have you ever heard of this place, Mel?”
**
“Girls.” Hugo held his gauntlet up. He pushed the rock back in place over the tunnel to obscure it once again. “I’ve heard explosions. Answer me.” He glanced around. “I can’t stay up here, there are government soldiers everywhere, this mountain is crawling with them...if you can hear me...I’m going to find a hiding space nearby, I will listen for you. Be safe.” He slipped away from the entrance then.
**
Jules looked to her gauntlet that crackled as Hugo tried to reach them. She drew her brows together. “Hugo?” She questioned before she looked to Melani, she ate a piece of jerky. “Wait...” Jules pushed up. She took off in the tunnel at a brisk pace, despite her limp. “Use the bracelet.” She grinned then. “It’s like a magnet, that’s what Charlie said.” She focused then as she made her way through the tunnels. Soon enough she felt a bit of the uncomfortable heat of the bracelet. Jules took off down that tunnel, the further she got, the bracelet began to glow orange. She came to a wall and she ran her fingers along it. “Come on.” She spoke as she searched around. Her fingers depressed a piece of the rock and the door came open.
Jules stood before a long hallway that was beautifully decorated with murals of the mages. “Woah...” She spoke as she stepped forward, torches clicked on along the hall lighting their path. She glanced to the aqueduct that ran along the pathway. This was part of the tombs beneath the city.
“Did the boss ever say if we found anything in these creepy tombs anyway?” A voice echoed down the hallway.
Jules pressed herself to the wall hiding behind a pillar, she clicked her light off. She glanced as two men walked down the hall, guns in hand. “Just a bunch of dead bodies, I guess.” The other man with him chuckled. “I don’t get why he’s so obsessed with this place. It gives me the creeps.”
“Yeah, a bunch of skeletons.” The other one shivered.
Jules watched as they stepped forward. One of the bricks beneath the soldiers feet depressed. “Oh shit! I told you to be careful!” The other one yelped just as the floor gave out beneath them. They screamed and then the sound of their bodies falling onto sharpened spears echoed through the hall.
Jules took in a slow breath. “We have to be careful.” She whispered as she looked to Melani.

Melani approached the tunnel - her head searched around as she heard the grinding of stone. Some door some where... then the rushing of water. “Oh no” she rushed forward along side Jules. A stone door had opened from above, a total of three openings allowed water to rush down.
Before she knew she was wading through water. The sound of it kicking up, falling - it was chaos to her ears, fear flooded her faster than the chambers. Water was approaching her chin just as she was pushed upward by Jules.
Melani gripped the ledge and pulled herself over, practically throwing herself onto the stone floor. She laid for a second and heaved. The tips of her hair were wet. She barely made it. She rolled to her back and then slowly stood, eyes watching Jules as she was already moving along.
“How do you manage to keep your cool?” She chuckled slightly, still breathing loudly. “One of my biggest fears is drowning...” She looked up to the mural on the wall, eyes tracing over the figures. “This is quite old..” She held her hand up to touch the paint. “A film has covered this painting, preserved it almost...” She sucked in a breath as she reviewed it.
“The battle between Mages and the rest of the world has been on going... People fear the natural power they hold. Many mech’s believe it isn’t fair for something to be free, effortless - while those of non-magic bearing hands had to painfully craft their power. Me personally? If we can just get along and live, I’m happy. I personally believe the mages to be a higher being, and maybe they should be respected as such... but that could lead to many other issues... At this point there is no factory reset to all the anger and hatred, which boiled from a forgotten past. No one knows why any more, just that it is tradition...” She sighed deeply and then glanced over.
Melani jumped as spears shot forward. “Gods... we could have just stepped over that or something...” She muttered and watched the spears slip back. “Crafty...” She sighed and then glanced over to the journal Jules had.
Melani stepped forward past the area once loaded with spikes, and traveled down the hallway. The bricks lining the wall were large and cracked. The ancient nature had her completely awestruck. The concepts that something could be so old fascinated her, especially since she hadn’t traversed outside of cities very much before. The thought that history was buried deep within was new to her, and it had her interested.
She listened as Jules read the manuscript out loud. “Sounds no different than today, I wonder how old this was... Dr Kunac...” She placed a finger to her chin. “I’ve heard the name...” She listened further. “Oh...Silvester Kunac, that is right. The first to envision the extraction of magic. Though initially he was only able to transfer the magic into Zen, and use Zen as a sort of battery. But it was the beginning to magi-tech. Which is more than just weaponry, it is what runs our showers, powers our lights. One powered Zen can power an entire city for a week... is it a proper resource alternative to coal? No... of course not.” She shook her head and sighed deeply.
Soon enough they sat and shared jerky, a bit of water out of the canteen. “This place is new to me. History has been buried as much for you as it has for me. The mechanists wanted to recreate reality so they tried to erase the past... Even the rich high class are oblivious to history. And now I am frustrated because all of this is before us - I have been further manipulated...” She shook her head and stood.
Suddenly Jules was rushing forward. She followed along, slinging her backpack over her shoulder - her hand still gripping her metal canteen. Her eyes glanced to Jule’s bracelet, which reacted powerfully. “Dang...” She whispered. She suddenly shifted back as the rock opened way to them, and someone else’s voice whispered forward.
Melani gasped slightly as the men fell - landing on huge sharpened pikes. She slowly approached the ledge and glanced down - fresh blood filled the pit. “Traps... why would there be traps...unless there is something down here...” She spoke out loud.
She sucked in a breath and lead Jules across the ledge that barely remained from the sunken floor. “Whatever is here... they would have hidden it... or protected it...” She lifted a brow and stood before a mural. She clicked her light onto a brighter setting. This one was larger..
“Hmm... It shows the mages traveled down into several mountains...” Her fingers reached forward and traced the painting. “Like the one we were just in - hidden underground cities, a sanctuary. Each having...a leader...” She sucked in a breath. “There are 3 others.. and then... one large one...” She followed the trail of the mural.
“4 total mountain cities, 1 final large hidden city, with a... god?” She questioned. “Someone over everyone, I’m not sure... a deity or...” she pulled her brow together.
“The city here is empty, everyone gone or dead... I wonder if these other cities are empty too?” She pulled her brow together. “I wonder if their leader died here, and the people left once that person was dead? Or...” she crossed her arms. “Let’s see if there’s any sort of tombs we can.. wait...” She looked back to the mural. There was a small indentation in the wall. A perfect circle... She pressed her finger against it.
Down the hallway - a large stone moved, revealing a long hallway. Melani walked over and watched as several braziers lit with a blue flame. “Wow...” At the end of the hallway was a huge round door, it had sigils and markings on it -a locked door. On the sides of the walls were several smaller versions of it.
“Doorways... tombs? Where they keep their dead?” She raised a brow. “Maybe if we can get into them - we can figure out what happened here. Those other cities? If there is some safe haven that still exists? You and all the mages could go there...if the mechs have no one to drain, no one to fight - then the war would be over? Or maybe these mages would join in on a complete uprising? Who knows...” She sucked in a breath. Behind them the doorway that allowed them in shut them in.

Jules glanced to Melani her eyes softened slightly when the question was begged of her, her demeanor. It was nothing more than a learned trait. She bit her lip and took in a slow breath, “I have been through a lot.” She replied, “I guess, fighting for my life isn’t something that is new to me, it’s been something that I have known since I can remember.” She then fell quiet, “Sorry...” She muttered after a moment of silence as she continued forward. She listened to Melani as she spoke of the battle between Mechs and Mages. Jules was quiet, the hidden past was something that always ate at her. She’d spent time with Agatha in the libraries back in Voxstein...though when they were younger they never found much. It was always when Agatha would return from her adventures that she would bring something by the shop, she’d come late when Henry was home for the day. Jules would claim she was staying late to work on a car, though in reality they stood over an old book in the office reading over the faded writing.
Jules slipped along the ledge. She stood before the mural her eyes looking it over. “There has to be more, you’re right.” She spoke as she took in the art. “More than one city?” Her brows raised.
Jules stepped forward she glanced to the door as it slipped back in place locking them inside. “If there is a safe haven that the government has not located...it must be very well hidden...” She shook her head. “We don’t have the equipment that the government has, the trinkets.” She let out a soft laugh. “To imagine that they haven’t even found this place baffles me...” She stepped forward, her fingertips touched one of the sigils. It had a dim blue glow to it. “How...is this lit up?” She questioned as she looked around the room. She stepped over to another and she gripped the stone, it spun, she moved it until it seated into place, the sigil began to glow on it as well now. She spun the sigil above it until it too seated. Soon enough Jules had them aligned and a small door shifted out of place. She stepped back as a bit of dust fell from the top of the stone as it slid from its place. “Do we have to open all of them to get that open?” She glanced to the large door once again.
Jules stepped forward slowly, her eyes cautiously looking over the walls and the floor watching for any dangerous objects. They stepped into a rounded room, a dead end. It had several murals upon the walls with stands before them. Jules looked up at one of the murals, it depicted a mage that held a staff in his hands, lightning came from a crystal upon the staff. He stood upon a mountain peak and dark clouds swirled above him. “Do you think this was their leader?” She questioned as she looked to the device before the mural. She turned to the next, it showed a woman whom had a white glow over her hands, she held her hand over the chest of a soldier, a Mech...he was terribly wounded. “Healing? Is she healing him?” She drew her brows together as she turned to the third mural. It showed a mech standing with a gun over his shoulder, the mages were at his feet, bowed before him, submitting. Jules stepped forward her brows drawn together, his hand was glowing, an insignia was upon it. “That...” She rushed from the room running back to the middle. Her eyes looked over the sigils on the large round door. “That’s it.” She rushed back down the hallway. She stepped to the device that was placed before the mural. It was a handle of some sort.
Jules stepped forward and placed her hands on the handle. She stared to holes in the wall before her, was she right? If she was wrong what would happen? She bit her lip and gripped the handle, she pushed it forward. A clatter came from behind the wall as gears turned. Suddenly metal shackles slapped down on Jules’ wrists, locking her in place. She screamed as she was pulled forward toward the wall. She yanked back, her breathing quick, “Melani!” She cried as she tried to slip her wrists from the device.
A grinding came from the wall as spikes rushed forward. Jules cried as she leaned back as far as she could, jerking on the device. The spikes clattered to a stop, the old mechanism was stuck. The sharp points of the spikes pressed against Jules’ chest and throat. She took in shaken breaths. “I...don’t think...th-that was it.” She could feel a bit of blood trickle down her neck from one of the metal spears. She jerked back, trying to free herself as more clattering came from behind the wall. The spears shuddered and then retracted into the wall. Jules’ arms were released, she fell back onto her back, gasping. Her eyes stared up to the dome of the room. “The kindness of our people led us to betrayal. Tillie Bridgewater, a kind soul healed the man that drove us below the crust of the earth.”
Jules slowly sat up, she blinked a few times and brushed the blood from her neck. “Bridgewater...” She spoke, that was her true last name. Was this an ancestor of hers? She stepped to the mural of the woman healing the mech. She reached forward and ran her fingertips over the paint. “Okay...” She let out a breath as she gripped the handle. She pushed it forward into the wall, the mechanism clamped down over her wrists. Jules pulled back, her heart began to pound as more clattering came from the wall. Then something sounded from out in the large room.
The mechanism clicked and released her. Jules rubbed her wrists and stumbled back, she let out a sigh of relief. “It’s riddles, and puzzles...” She stared to the mural, the woman had beautiful blue eyes like her and her hair was an ashen color as well. Jules bit her lip slightly, she wanted to know more...she had to know more....
“Okay...nothing to it, huh?” She let out a shy laugh then as she stepped back down the hallway to the center room. A sigil that was previously dark was glowing white now. “Okay...4 more to go...” Jules stepped to a door and moved the blocks around until they seated into place. “We’ll be more careful...the answer is there...we just have to find it...” She nodded as she walked down the hallway toward their next trial.

Melani turned suddenly when she heard the churning of gears. She gasped - the walls began to shake, it was clear that none of these contraptions had moved in a very long time. Part of the wall crumbled away - revealing a collection of gears that turned.
Jules scream echoed in the chambers and Melani acted fast. She rushed forward and grasped a large rock and tossed it into the rolling gears. It caught between two gears - which then became jammed, until finally the gear popped out of place and the machine stopped.
Melani looked over - just in time to see Jules just barely taken by the spears. “Damnit...” She watched then as Jules was released and she finished the puzzle. Melani stepped back and followed her out into the hallway. “Careful, okay?” She heaved slightly and then approached the next doorway.
Melani looked over the details of the door. A sentence circled around the round door. “The first tale of magic existed only at the stroke of midnight” she glanced up to the different images on the round turning pieces. The first was phases of the moon. The second was shapes. “These look like... fang shapes?” She questioned. The last was animal shapes, the heads of different kind of cats, dogs. “Hmm...” She closed her eyes and thought for a long moment.
“What was the first kind of magic?” She questioned softly. “moon...fangs...” she opened her eyes then. “Werewolves?” She questioned. She then turned the moons until it was a full moon.
“Which one of these is a wolf fang?” She questioned and began to turn them. “no...not that one...” She whispered, until finally she got to the one she thought was correct. “Damn...” She then turned the final one to match the wolf head. She finally depressed the center piece.
The door began to roll back and she sucked in a deep breath. Suddenly 3 wolves bolted forward. One jumped forward and grasped onto Melani’s arm. She cried out and reached forward - she grasped onto one of his fangs and pulled on it harshly. These wolves were giant - compared to normal. She could hardly wrap her hand around the entire fang. She pulled with all her strength - the tooth gave out and ripped from its jaw.
She plunged the fang forward into the shoulder of the wolf. The wolf cried out in pain and stumbled back. She then pulled her gun and fired it several times in the wolf’s chest. It was then that another jumped forward and knocked the gun from her hand.
She rolled over and scrambled to retrieve the fang that had clattered against the floor. Another wolf pounced - she pressed her hand against its huge chest, her fingers buried by its thick black fur. She plunged the fang forward into it’s chest, right between it’s ribs. Just then the last wolf clamped onto her leg and dragged her out of the room and down the hall. She cried out - “Jules!” She shouted.

Jules followed her brows tucked together. “The first magic?” She questioned, pondering. Though, Melani answered the riddle quickly. “Werewolves.” She chuckled, “Yes, but...werewolves aren’t real...right?” She raised a brow then as the door rolled back. Everything happened quickly. Jules was slammed against the wall harshly by one of the wolves bounded forward. The world spun in circles around her. Her breaths seemed to echo off of the cold stone walls. Her eyes fluttered, blood trickled down the side of her head from a gash in her temple.
The sound of Melani’s scream brought clarity to her mind. “Melani!” She cried as she raced down the hallway after the wolf. It pinned Melani to her back, it’s fangs dripping drool. Jules didn’t have to think as she pulled the old handgun from her hip that Charlie had given her. Time seemed to slow as she lifted the gun, she let out a breath and squeezed the trigger. The gun kicked back heavily.
The wolf snarled and turned as blood poured from its ribs where the bullet hit. It rushed forward toward Jules. She dodged to the side and scrambled back to her feet. The wolf gripped onto her pant leg and jerked her toward it. Jules let out a cry as the huge paws of the beast held her down. She rolled as it tried to chomp down on her neck. Her hand gripped onto her pickaxe. She swung it up and lodged it into the side of the chest of the beast. She then ripped down harshly. The wolf howled in pain. Jules shoved the wolf and then she slammed the pickaxe into the skull of the creature. She pulled back on her axe, her breaths quick, her eyes wide. “Mel?” She rushed over. “Are you...?” She looked over the bloody wounds. “Shit.” She knelt next to her, “Uh...” Jules let out a shaken breath. Her head was fuzzy now from the impact against the wall.
“Let me see...” She clicked her light to a brighter setting. Jules pulled her pack off and set it down. “This isn’t going to fix you...” She spoke softly as she pulled off her jacket. Beneath she wore a black short sleeve shirt, a few of her scars were visible. A necklace hung around her neck, it was a intricate design of a silver Lilly, she’d had it since she was a child. Henry gathered it from the orphanage, it was a trinket that had been recovered from her home after the ‘fire’.
Jules used her pickaxe to slice into her jacket. She took in shaken breaths as she used water on Melani’s wounds. “I’m...not...a nurse or...a doctor...” She spoke softly, “S-sorry...” She cleaned dirt from the wound. Jules fell quiet as she cleaned the deep punctures. She’d cleaned up her wound many times as she was growing up. The orphanage didn’t care how many times she was beaten...she always had to pick herself up.
Jules looked to the huge wolves. “So...werewolves...huh?” She stared to the creatures. “How the hell were they down here?” She let out a breath and shook her head. “I’ve never seen wolves that big before...” She carefully stood and offered her hand to Melani. “Let’s go see what they were guarding, hm?” She wrapped her arm around Melani to steady her. She brushed a bit of blood from the side of her head and took in a slow breath. “Alright.” She grabbed the huge fang from the floor and they made their way passed the door that was open. Jules kept her eyes trained forward. She was listening for any movement. “There.” She spoke as she released Melani next to a statue of a wolf that she could hold herself up with.
Jules stepped forward. “Clever.” She lifted the fang and slipped it into a round slot. Around the slot a strange writing began to glow. Jules stepped back as the door cracked open. “I’ll...make sure it’s safe...” She spoke as she slipped through the small opening. Jules found herself in a large room full of books and artifacts, as well as stone caskets. It was a symmetrical room. Every item had its place. “Oh...woah...Mel...” She moved to the door and pressed against it. “I...think this is what we were looking for.” She nodded.
Jules managed to open the door the rest of the way and she helped Melani forward. “Look at this.” She stared to the beautiful artwork on the walls. Jules stepped to a podium in the center of the room. Jules looked over it a moment before she slid the stone away. She raised a brow as she looked over the writing. “I...” She shook her head. “I can’t read this...this...” She flipped a few more pages. “I’ve never seen a language like this before....” Jules sighed softly.
Suddenly the radio crackled. “Melani.........ge.......o......I......tr.....g......after........st.....” It was Hugo.
Jules lifted her gauntlet. “Hugo? Come again?” She asked. “Hugo?”
“Get out....” Garbled static followed once more.
Jules drew her brows together. “Hugo what’s happened we can’t hear you well....”
Static followed. Jules took in a deep breath, she stared to the book. She lifted the book and placed it in her pack. “Wait...” She reached forward, beneath the book was a small trinket. A necklace. She lifted the necklace and looked it over, it was a tree of life with the ancient writing scribed into it carefully. Jules took in quick breaths, her eyes glowed slightly. She let out a cry as she dropped the piece, her bracelet was red hot. “Damnit....what is that?” She took in quick gasps. Jules grit her teeth as she lifted it again and handed it to Melani.
Jules glanced around the room her eyes looked over the murals. “Look.” She stepped forward. “Voxstein...” The city was painted carefully on the mural. To the north of it was one of the hidden cities, in the snowy mountains. “Do you think...the mages are still there? What is that necklace?” She asked softly. Jules searched Melani’s eyes a moment. The ground beneath them rumbled slightly. “Mel...” Jules went to grab her just as the floor beneath them gave out. Jules screamed as she was tossed down into a pit. She felt like she’d fallen forever through the darkness until she landed in water. “Melani!” She screamed as she came to the surface. “Mel!” She kicked quickly against the water and found her way to the edge. She coughed up water as she glanced down the tunnel. The cavern around them rumbled. “Mel...” Jules gripped onto her arm pulling her from the water. Jules wrapped her arm around her. “We need to move!” She cried as rubble began to fall around them. Jules rushed forward, nearly picking Melani up as she sprinted ahead.
Jules shoved Melani forward as they came to an opening. “Go!” She cried as they moved into tight quarters. The rocks rumbled around them as they moved through the tight passage. Jules whimpered, she could feel the walls edging in toward them. She gasped as they made it out. “Go! Go!” She grabbed Melani again helping her forward. Jules skidded to a stop at the edge of a cliff. “Damnit.” She glanced back. “They must be blasting again...” Jules looked back she bit her lip. “Okay...” She breathed. She pulled rope and attached it to the ground. She then ran the other end through her belt. She closed her eyes a moment. “You’ll just have to pull yourself across...okay?” Jules looked to Melani a long moment before she took a few steps back. She ran forward toward the cliff. Jules let out a cry mid air as she leaped. Her torso slammed against the edge of the cliff on the other side knocking the air from her lung. Jules dug in with her pickaxe as she scrambled to pull herself up. She crawled up and attached the rope. “O...okay...” She choked out. “Come...on...” A bit of blood trickled from her nose from the impact. She brushed it away as she waited on Melani. She glanced ahead. “I can see light.” She spoke softly.
Jules helped Melani up and they moved ahead. The cavern behind them caved in as they pushed through thick brush to the crisp air of the outside world. Jules grinned as the sun hit her face. “We made it.” She chuckled.
Suddenly the butt of a rifle slammed against Jules’ head, she crumpled to the ground loose as a rag doll. Lyonel stood with a rifle over his shoulder, a cigar in his mouth, he chuckled. “So, love, tell me what exactly it is that you’re doing with this mage huh?” He pushed Jules onto her back, the wound on the side of her head was bleeding from his harsh blow. “I’m all ears for the deal you want to make me, but I just can’t see what you’re doing.” He grinned then. “Oh I brought good ole’ Hugo along too.” He glanced over his shoulder. Hugo stood in cuffs with a cloth wrapped around his mouth. When they were in the tomb Hugo was trying to warn them...but the static kept them from understanding him...

Melani screamed as she was pulled down the hallway. Though suddenly the wolf let go - she lay with blood pouring from her leg. She pulled her brows together and leaned down, her fingers grasping her leg. Within seconds her hand was covered in red hot blood, it shimmered on her hand. Her leg throbbed with pain, but she knew that this was only the beginning of it. Many of her nerves were still in shock... It wasn't long before she felt Jules's hands upon her leg. "Don't apologize..." she groaned as she felt the cloth tighten around her leg. Slowly she stood, with the aid of Jules. She could walk, but with a heavy limp. She followed her back into the room - where the fang fit into some kind of key slot.
"Werewolves..." she whispered in return. Her hand was pressed against a wall, which she leaned on. "The only thing I can think of - is magic. Those wolves were huge... and had a weird black glow to them, not normal - for sure." she looked up as Jules picked up a necklace. She went to move forward - but her leg throbbed wildly. Her palm held outward and she took the necklace. "hmm... I can run some tests on it when we get back.. figure out what this made of. Something with a lot of magic - I might be able to use it to..." she thought for a long moment. "if this is strong enough - I might have the power to create a remote to access every bracelet. I'd have to calibrate the frequency of the magic radiation to match the hertz of the bracelet...hack into their mainstream..." she pondered.
Suddenly there was a shaking. She quickly put the necklace into her pocket and tucked it away. Within seconds - the floor gave out. Melani screamed out and hit the water. She tried to kick but she wasn't strong enough, she could barely keep her head above the water. She spat out water with each second she was able to hit the open air. An arm slipped around her - and she was tugged along to the edge. "Shit" she pulled herself to the waters edge. She laid for a second before she sucked in a deep breath, she bit down on her lower lip and urged herself to her feet. She threw an arm around Jules and hobbled forward. The pain was intense, with each step - it shook her bones.
They came to the cliff side and Melani let out a deep groan. She stumbled back and pressed a hand against the cavern wall. She watched as Jules made the long leap. She gasped as Jules almost didn't make it, the impact that she had - she could almost feel it. She then stumbled over to the line. She crawled down and wrapped her good leg around the line, so that it was tucked under her knee. She then used both arms to pull her along the line, her back facing the long fall downward. Her injured leg hung down, blood had soaked the make-shift bandage. She groaned, breathing was becoming difficult...
She made it to the other side - with Jules' help she was able to stand back up. Soon enough they emerged - just barely. Just as Jules was hit - Melani stumbled back, she sucked in a deep breath. Her vision was blurry, the entire world was spinning like she drank too much. She slowly looked up... her entire face was covered with dirt and sweat, her pant leg was torn and tattered, there was a slight trail of blood coming from her soaked shoe. "Lyonel..." she stumbled forward - both of her hands gripped his tunic, though it was not menacing at all. She fell slightly, her grip on him was the only thing holding her up. "He has Caroline, Lyonel... Caroline..." she sucked in a breath - her eyes were full of tears. Of pain, and sadness.
Lyonel gripped her shoulders and studied her. "Caroline..." he grit his teeth. "What do you mean, Caroline is dead. I.."
Suddenly her golden square float from her pocket. A voice came through it. "Lyonel... I'm not dead" Caroline spoke to him. "Vance has been doing all of his tests on me... My death was a cover up for my disappearance..."
"No.." Lyonel gripped Melani's shoulders even tighter.
"They're coming... I--" static.
Melani's grip fell from his shirt and she fell to the ground. "That's why - I need to rescue her... Jules has been helping me, Hugo too... If you want to stand with Foxtran - fine, but I convinced them, they both have nothing to do with this..."
Lyonel knelt down then and pulled at the bandage on her leg. "We can deal with that later... we have a bigger issue here" he looked to her leg. Black lines crawled up, it was coming close to her knee. "Whatever this is, poison? It is moving fast - we might have to..." he grit his teeth. He pulled his sword from his hip. "I'll apologize later" he spoke and held the sword up. Suddenly he brought it down, before anyone could argue.
Melani's scream echod in the mountains. Lyonel knelt down and quickly wrapped her leg, which was now amputated. "Hugo - Grab her leg - we need to get her to the hospital" he tucked both arms under Melani and lifted her. Lyonel rushed down the road. To their luck - the hospital was not far at all. They bust through the double doors - within seconds an entire staff of nurses were hoisting Melani. A nurse grasped the leg from Hugo - and instantly Melani was ushered into the back.
Melani looked up - bright lights blurred her vision. And then as they bust into the next room, she had passed out from pain...
Lyonel turned and then looked to Hugo, to Jules. "Don't consider yourself off the hook..." he groaned and then sat down in the waiting room. He crossed his legs and drummed on his knee... thoughts passing through his mind. Caroline... his first love. He had always had a soft love for Melani - for the sake that she was Caroline's sister, and they looked so much alike. When Caroline 'died' he found himself attracted to Melani, a replacement maybe, maybe he just never got over it. Caroline's death was supposedly a murder - by the mages. He knew Caroline was a mage... after her 'murder' - he became a contract hunter, as he had began to hate all mages... Now everything was different.
"Lyonel..." The golden square had float upward front of him. "Mel has told me about you... I know... I'm sorry" she whispered. "Please... I can't..take this anymore..." she coughed and then spat. A bit of blood, it was obvious. "I don't know.. how much more of this I have left..." she whispered once more...
The doctor came from the back of the hospital. "She is Foxtran, no?" The doctor questioned. Lyonel stood then and nodded. "You saved her leg, whatever that stuff is... we don't have anything to counter act it... you made the right call. We can put her in a wheelchair, or give her a Synthetic..."
Lyonel pulled out his card and held it up. "Give her the best thing you got..." he spoke and then set the card on the front desk.
"Alright... it'll take all night, but I've got something..." he nodded. "You all should get some rest... The operation wont be over until easily tomorrow morning..." he looked to the front desk nurse, who nodded and took the card....

Hugo wrestled his hands from the bonds as he watched Lyonel with Melani. He lunged forward when Lyonel brought his sword down on her leg, his eyes wide. “Lyonel...” He breathed as he looked to the leg. He quickly scooped Jules into his arms. “What the fuck is this stuff?” He grabbed Melani’s amputated leg, his eyes looked over the black veins. He looked to Jules with soft eyes. “You didn’t have to hit her so hard...” He grunted.
Jules came to about halfway to the hospital. She sucked in a quick breath and nearly fell from Hugo’s grip. He stopped and allowed her down. “Mel...” Jules rushed forward as they entered the hospital. Her vision was blurry. She winced slightly. “What...what happened?” Her chest heaved, she didn’t remember getting hit in the head. Her eyes fell on Hugo. “What the fuck happened?” She snapped, she gripped his shirt her brows pulled together. “We got attacked by Werewolves....huge....giant blood thirsty fucking Werewolves...” Her grip on him was trembling. Her hands were covered in dried caked on blood.
Hugo placed his hands gently on her shoulders. “It’s okay Jules.” He stared into her eyes. “We got Melani to the hospital she’s going to be alright.” He nodded as he looked her over. He looked to Lyonel as he spoke to them, his brows were pulled together, he let out a breath, biting back a snarky remark.
“Let’s see here.” A nurse came forward. “Are you alright dear?” She stepped to Jules whom was staring to the double doors that Melani had been taken behind. “Why don’t you come back with me, hm? Let’s have a look at that head of yours.” The nurse wrapped an arm gently over Jules’ shoulders and led her into the back. She walked her into a room and sat her on a bed. “There.” The nurse gave a warm smile as she pulled out supplies. “Can you tell me what happened?” She asked.
Jules watched as the woman dabbed gauze in saline. She shook her head. “No.” She whispered. “I...I’m fine.” She stood up.
The nurse placed a hand on Jules’ shoulder. “Just relax dear.” She reached forward and began to clean the blood from Jules’ face. Jules winced and grit her teeth, her hand gripped onto the woman’s wrist. Her eyes looked to the nurse for a long moment before she released her grip and relaxed. The nurse carefully cleaned the wound. “You hit your head pretty hard...” She spoke as she looked over the wound.
A tall slender man in a white coat walked into the room then. He pulled on his gloves and walked over. “I am Dr. Reid, can you tell me what happened to you?” He asked as he inspected the wound. He flashed a light in Jules’ eyes and he let out a breath. “Can we get scans?” He looked to the woman next to him.
“Of course doctor.” The nurse nodded as she stepped quickly from the room.
“What’s your name?” Dr. Reid asked as he jotted a few things down on a clipboard. He looked up to Jules then.
“Lilly.” Jules spoke softly. She knew better than to speak her name, she wondered at what extent would Vance go to get her returned to Voxstein?
“Hm, Lilly, can you tell me what happened to your head there?” He asked his voice was calm.
Jules shook her head. “No...I can’t remember...” She lowered her eyes as she tried to remember. Werewolves. The jaws flashed before her vision. She remembered running with Melani, then...they were almost out...and then her memory blanked.
The doctor nodded, “Alright.” He spoke before he exited the room. He walked to the front desk, his eyes looked to Hugo and then to Lyonel a moment before he disappeared back into the back.
“Lay down dear.” The nurse spoke as she came back into the room. “Just relax okay? Lean your head this way.” She helped adjust Jules’ head. She looked to the scars on Jules’ arms and let out a long breath. The nurse carefully stitched the wound up before she wrapped a bandage around Jules’ head. “We need to get a few scans, to make sure you’re okay.” The nurse spoke as she helped her to her feet.
Jules sat down in the wheelchair that was placed before her. Her eyes moved about as she was wheeled into the back. She stared to a room where she saw several doctors standing around a table, a huge bright aimed at the table. “Wait...” Jules shot up from the wheelchair. She rushed to the window, staring into the room.
“Come on.” The nurse pulled her back gently. “We need to make sure you’re alright.”
Jules fought the woman slightly, though her head was spinning, it throbbed. “O-okay...” She sat back down. She was wheeled down the hallway and placed on a table beneath a flat metal contraption. They placed a box around her head and asked her to lay still. The clanking of the machine hurt Jules’ ears as it scanned over her. She let out a cry as the world began to spin. Soon enough darkness overtook her vision.
**
“She’s seizing.” A nurse rushed in toward Jules as her body convulsed. “The pressure is too high, where is Reid?!” The nurse ripped the box up and shoved the metal plate away from Jules. She held her head gently, protecting her as another woman helped roll her onto her side.
Dr. Reid came rushing into the room. “What happened?!” He helped steady Jules as the convulsions began to calm.
“She was fine...she started mumbling something about...Werewolves...and caves...” She shook her head, “Her eyes fluttered and then she started seizing.”
“Did we get anything before?” He asked.
“Yes.” Another nurse rushed forward with a film in her hand. “Just two shots.”
The doctor held the film up he grit his teeth. “Get her to the operating room now.” As he spoke blood began to drip from Jules’ nose as her body spasmed again. He helped rush Jules down the hall on a stretcher. Nurses rushed along with them as they rushed into a clean room. Jules was shuffled onto a metal bed. She was surrounded. A nurse started an IV in one arm while another began to hook up monitoring equipment.
Jules’ convulsions stopped as the team pushed medications into her through the IVs. Her body fell limp and her breathing slowed. A nurse carefully inserted tubing down Jules’ throat as a precaution. “Alright.” Dr. Reid spoke, he clipped the films up onto the wall and turned on a light behind them. He inspected the flies and then nodded. He nodded to a nurse who lifted as much hair away as possible before she took clippers to the side of Jules’ head. She then cleaned the area as the doctor scrubbed his hands. He walked over and took in a breath. “Let’s hope no damage has been done.” He spoke softly as he lifted a drill into his hand. He held Jules’ head and he carefully drilled just above her right ear, just below where Lyonel had hit her with the butt of his rifle. Blood began to pour out once Dr. Reid had bored through the skull. He lay her head to the side allowing the blood to leak freely.
**
“Do you know what happened to her?” The nurse from before stood in the waiting room, her eyes on Hugo. “Who hit her?” She questioned.
Hugo took in a breath. “They were down in the caverns...” He spoke his eyes on the nurse.
“And the scars?” She asked, her brows tucked together. “Where did she get those, hm?”
Hugo raised his brows. “Look, I haven’t known her long, I know she had a rough childhood.” He crossed his arms. “Why don’t you let her come back out front?”
The nurse stared to him a long moment. “I can’t do that, she’s in surgery. Her brain swelled so much from the injury that our doctor had to drill a hole to release the pressure.” She spoke before she turned and went back through the double doors.
Hugo grit his teeth. “Lyonel.” He growled his brows tucked together. “That mage...” He stared to Lyonel. “She is the key, that is what everything that led us to, she is our answer to getting Caroline and you could have killed her.” He snapped harshly. He pulled his flask and took a swig from it.
**
It was 3 days before Jules opened her eyes. She’d slipped away a few times on the team. They had to pump her full of drugs to keep her heart beating. Her brain had suffered significant damage from the pressure within her skull. Her eyes fluttered open, she gagged against the tube in her throat. Jules reached up to yank the tube out.
“Woah there.” Hugo was sitting next to the bed, it was his turn to watch over her. His hands held hers carefully. He stood over her. “Hey, hey. You’re alright.” He stared into her eyes.
Jules’ chest heaved, tears streamed from her eyes. The nurse rushed into the room. “She’s awake.” She spoke with a smile on her lips. “Hold on dear.” She carefully deflated the balloon that held the tube in place within Jules’ throat. “I’m going to pull that thing out, okay?” She nodded. The nurse then swiftly pulled it out.
Jules coughed and held her hand to her throat. She looked to Hugo. “What...” Her voice was hoarse. “Happened?”
Hugo looked to the nurse a moment and then back to her. “Your brain was swollen from that knock you took on your head.” He spoke softly.
Jules sat up slowly. She looked to the tubing that ran into both arms. Flash backs of the tower raced through her mind. Her pulse increased. “N-no...” She reached to pull the IV out.
“Slow down there.” The nurse carefully gripped her hand. “I’ll get you out of those here in a bit, okay?” She gave a gentle smile. “Just relax.”
Jules grit her teeth. “Melani...” She spoke, she remembered the blood...her leg. “Is Melani okay?” Her eyes looked to Hugo then.

“Lyonel, please come back with me” A man approached the waiting room in a white coat. Lyonel stood and made his way to the back, they entered what was normally the break room. Laying on the table was several prosthetic legs. “Since you are paying, I figured you should choose which she will receive...”
Lyonel stepped to the table. There were a few simple ones, another that seemed heavy on gadgets - and equally heavy in that regard. Then the last one on the table. “Will this be removable?” He questioned.
“No... We just advanced to a very unique technique of actually connecting her nerves to the piece of tech... You are lucky you are in this town actually, we invented it here.” The doctor spoke and looked over the piece that Lyonel stood over. “That one is my favorite... it is very strong, but yet light and nimble, and less of an eye sore...” He raised a brow.
“To her nerves... so it will be like a real leg, she can feel it?” He questioned.
“Not quite... more like she will be able to move it like a normal leg, but no - if the leg gets damaged, she will not feel it...” The doctor lifted the selected leg up. The shin had a beautiful design of rounded gears and patterns, almost like woven fabric - but instead it was a thick copper colored steel. The inside had a thick beam that was surrounded in blue thick wires, fluid flowed through them... Then several gears - that would move once powered.
“How does it work?” Lyonel questioned.
“Powered by Zen, which is why this city was perfect for it. We had much to access for testing...” He nodded. “This will do it then... thank you” the doctor nodded. “I’ll escort you back to the waiting room”
***
“She’s waking - increase dosage, 5 milliliters” a man spoke, a white mask covered his mouth.
A bright light shrouded her vision - she was stirring in the middle of the surgery. It was hour 8.
“Whats...” Melani’s heart rate skipped up, a machine beeped swiftly to follow.
“Bp rising, 210 over 155, pulse 190 - She is panicking - Doctor”
“Damnit, hold her down, we can’t afford this right now!”
“She’s not -”
“Increase to 15!” A shout.
“180...175...Pulse is lowering...steady..”
***
Her eyes opened to the bright sun shining down upon her. Floating atop a rolling wave of the ocean. A few clouds to the right of the sun - shapes, like a rabbit running down a long thin pathway.
Another roll of a wave passes by. Her chest rises and falls. Head dipping slightly under the water with the movements. Ears full of water - the sound of the ocean loud in her skull.
A sort of looming doom. A fear. Churning in her chest. As if something from below is going to reach up and take her down. But it doesn’t. Instead the waves push her to the shore, where she lay bare on the white sand. The sun kissing over her skin - naked before the careless sky.
Something changed then. After what felt like hours of just floating. Going no where. Yet some where. What was this island. Why was the sun so bright? Why can’t she move? But now something over took all of these thoughts. A swarming fire over her leg. Ants crawling over it with speed, biting down on her flesh and ripping it away. A long line of them trailing all the way down the beach, until it disappeared into the horizon.
Suddenly Melani jolted up, her body at a 90 degree angle. Her fingers grasped her leg, brushing away what would be flesh - as if those ants crawled on her now. She heaved loudly, a panicked whimper crawling from her lips.
Though it wasn't long before she realized there were no ants. And there was no warm soft flesh. Just hard cold metal, her finger caught in one of the holes of the design - touching a thick blue wire.
She scrambled back slightly in the bed, her back slamming against the wall. “What the fuck!” She gasped. The monitor was beeping loudly. In seconds the room was full of nurses.
“Relax - Relax” A woman pressed a hand on her chest. “You have just come back from Surgery...” She spoke. “Lean back...” She looked over - the Doctor walked in.
“Miss Foxtran” The doctor spoke, his hands in his lab coat pockets. “You made it” he smiled and sat down on the edge of the bed.
“Who are you...what happened?” She questioned.
“I am Doctor Carvner, you are in the hospital. Your friend.. Lyonel, saved your life. Some kind of poison, unidentified - threatened to over come your body. He stopped it, but unfortunately your leg...” He sucked in a breath. “But we have fitted you with the best technology the world has to offer. Take a look” he nodded, pointing to her leg.
The beautiful design went down to her ankle, and then the rest of her foot was like an eco-skeleton of the nervous system, almost. It was a perfectly shaped foot, made of thick bent wires. Within it were several small metal tubes that went to each toe.
“This leg... should operate like your regular foot... Move your toes” he nodded.
Melani looked down to her foot. She pulled her brows together. “I am...” She whispered. Nothing was happening.
“Its hard at first - because you don’t believe in it...” He stood then and smiled. “You will... just keep focusing...I’ll be right back”
“I..we... Don’t have time for this” she pulled a tube from her arm and swung her legs over the edge of the bed. A nurse tried to stop her - but the Doctor spoke over them, telling them to wait.
Melani stepped onto the ground, and then instantly stumbled. She gripped forward to a cart and held her self up. She breathed heavily “I - “ she sucked in a breath. “I can't fucking feel it” she cried, tears swelling in her eyes.
She reached down and grasped her leg and shoved it forward, balancing on it now. She focused and moved her other leg forward. With a shove she moved her cyber leg forward. The Doctor moved out of the way. “If you want your friends, you go see them” he spoke and held his hand out.
Normally the doctor would stop her, after such a surgery. But the infused Zen actually sped up her healing rate of her leg, she was technically good to walk as it was. But learning how to walk. That was an entirely new thing. Her body had to accept the new nerves as replacements... she had to believe in them.
She practically drug her leg forward, until she stood in the waiting room. “Get me the fuck out of here” she spoke, eyes swollen with tears...

“Is she okay?” Jules tucked her brows together. “Hugo?” The monitor on the wall beeped quickly as her pulse began to race.
“Why don’t you relax dear, you’ve been through quite the ordeal, hm?” The nurse reached forward.
Jules shoved her hands away. “No...no no....I...the blood...” She looked to her clean hands. She reached quickly and yanked the IV from her arm. Blood splattered onto the floor as she jumped up from the bed. Her head instantly began to spin.
“Lilly.” The nurse came forward, “Lilly listen to me.” She placed her hands on her shoulders, she glanced to Hugo. “Your friend Melani, she is okay.” She looked back to her. “You need to sit back down. We can’t have you up like this just yet.”
Jules pushed her out of her way. “What happened?!” She cried and rushed forward the heart monitor wires stretched from the machines on the walls. She gripped Hugo’s collar harshly. “What happened?” Tears streamed down her cheeks. “She...she’s was okay...we...were okay...”
Hugo held her shoulders. “It’s okay, Melani is recovering. Everything is okay.”
Two other nurses rushed into the room. One had a syringe in his hand. He pushed it into Jules’ neck and injected the foggy liquid. Jules’ eyes glazed over, her grip began to loosen on his shirt. “Hugo...” She breathed as her head lulled forward.
The nurses grabbed her and adjusted her back into the bed. “We’re going to have to supervise her.” The nurse spoke her eyes on Hugo. “You really don’t know what happened to her?” She asked her brows scrunched together.
Hugo shook his head as he stared to Jules. “No....she was a mess when she came from the caverns...but she saved Melani’s life.”
**
Lub dub. Lub dub. Lub dub....
Her heart pounded with her ears. Jules lay in total darkness. “Where...” She felt around. “What’s going on...?” She reached forward and felt the thick fur of a creature. A snarl came from the darkness. Jules stared into glowing red eyes, the fangs of the beast glistened. Jules screamed only to be slammed back, where she fell....it was a strange feeling...she fell through the darkness, yet it felt like she didn’t move at all...Jules cried out as she slammed against the bottom, her head bounced off of the cold floor. Blood began to drip from it. It felt as though her head was being crushed. She whimpered as a feeling of weightlessness washed over her body and all of her pain disappeared...
**
“I haven’t seen swelling like this in years...what the hell hit this girl?” The doctor spoke as he looked over a new scan of Jules’ brain.
“Both of the men that brought the two girls in say they don’t know what happened.” The nurse scoffed. “Have you seen the scars on this poor girl?” She asked as she looked over the scars on her arms. “Something happened to her...” She sighed softly. “Look at these.” She traced along one, “Injection marks from a needle. But...she isn’t drugged...she doesn’t seem to fit the bill for an addict...there are no other markers to indicate it.” She sighed.
The doctor injected a hazy purple liquid into the IV line. “I know. I’ve noticed.” He sighed softly. “Unfortunately if she doesn’t ever remember...” He shook his head as he put his stethoscope into his ears and began to listen to her breathing sounds and heartbeat.
Jules sat up then, her hand gripped onto the doctor. Her eyes were wide, she shoved against him and she brought a fist forward that connected with his jaw. The doctor stumbled back holding onto his face, his back pressed against the wall. The nurse reached forward then her eyes looking to the monitor as her pulse raced.
“You’re okay.” The nurse spoke, her voice soft. “You’re safe.”
The doctor rubbed his jaw, a nice bruise had already begun to develop. “You’re in the hospital. Do you remember?” Dr. Reid stepped forward.
Jules stared to him a long moment. “No....” She shook her head. “No...what happened?” She made to move from the bed.
“Slow down.” He pushed her back into the bed, his hand remained on her shoulder. “You’ve had surgery, there is a hole in the side of your head, to relieve pressure...”
“Where’s...Hugo? Melani?” She questioned quickly. Her hands covered in blood. The werewolves. Her own hands trembling as she tied the makeshift bandage around Melani’s leg. “Oh god...is she dead? Is Melani dead?” She whimpered.
“She’s recovering.” The doctor spoke softly. “Why don’t you rest hm?” He asked softly.
Over the next week it was repeat after repeat. It was like Jules’ brain was reset each time she fell asleep. She’d forget. She seemed to reset back to the moment after the attack. Though slowly toward the end of the week she began to retain again. She first remembered she was in the hospital. She wouldn’t pull her IV from her arm each time she woke.
The doctor fit a plug into the side of her head once the swelling subsided enough that it was safe. It would heal into her bone and fuze with it. Jules stood in the lobby. Hugo had gone to town and gotten her clothing. She wore black pants with leather boots that came to her knees. A grey long sleeve tunic was fitted beneath a brown leather waist cinch that had straps that wrapped over her shoulders. Jules had cut the rest of her hair short, she had short bangs in the front and pushed to the side, a wrap still remained around her head to protect the wound. She pulled on a black beanie and fitted her goggles over the top of it. Her gauntlet remained on her hand protecting her.
“Coffee?” Hugo asked as he came to her side.
“You’re drinking coffee?” She looked to him a brow raised. She then sighed softly as she looked back out the window. The mines were visible from here, smoke rose into the skies from the machinery. “How is Mel?” She asked softly.
“Still sleeping...” Hugo spoke as he set the coffee on the window sill in front of her. “And of course I’m not drinking coffee.” He let out a soft laugh, “It’s for you.”
Jules gave a slight nod. She reached forward and took a sip from the coffee. She took in a long deep breath.
“Miss Bridgewater?” Dr. Reid approached. “I need to get a few more scans. You’re doing quite well the past two days.” He smiled then. “How’s your memory?” He asked.
Jules looked to him, “I can’t remember what happened...” She shook her head. “It’s all a blur, I feel like I know what happened sometimes, but...it’s like this huge shadow is covering it...I can’t get it into focus...” She sighed softly. Then her eyes darted from him to a commotion. “Hugo...” She pushed passed Dr. Reid and ran across the lobby quickly. “Melani.” She spoke and came to her. She placed her hands on her shoulders before she pulled her into a gentle embrace. “You’re awake.” She took a step back and looked to the beautiful leg. She’d visited Melani’s bedside a few times. It was like artwork, the whole thing, though it was a beautiful machine.
“Miss Bridgewater.” Dr. Reid stepped forward, his eyes stared to her, a pale color had washed over her complexion.
Jules took in quick breaths, her eyes fluttered slightly. Running wasn’t something she should be doing. “We...can go...soon...” She spoke, her speech slurred. “Go...to the place...in the mountains....” She stumbled slightly.
Dr. Reid held onto her shoulders from behind. “Miss Bridgewater, I suggest that we get you to bed, I think you’ve had quite the excitement for one day, hm?”
Hugo rushed forward with a wheelchair. He helped the doctor get Jules into the chair. Moments later Jules’ head leaned forward as she lost consciousness. “What’s happening?”
“She shouldn’t have run.” Dr. Reid spoke as he rolled her off.
Hugo looked to Melani his eyes worried. “Melani...” He stared into her eyes. “Melani...you would have died...if Lyonel hadn’t...” He looked to her leg. “You were going to die...there was a poison.” His eyes moved back to hers. He could feel her pain, her sadness...
**
Jules grit her teeth as she opened her eyes. "What..." Her head was throbbing. "Where..."
"You're okay." The nurse nodded. "You can't run yet dear. You shook your brain up quite a bit." She rubbed her shoulder.
"Melani?" She questioned her brows tucked together.
"Go on and see her dear." The nurse nodded, "Just, take your time getting up."
Jules moved her feet to dangle from the bed. She sat for a long moment before she stood and walked toward the door of her room. She stumbled slightly and found her way down the hallway. She slipped into the room and sat down heavily, her head was spinning. "Mel?" She asked her voice soft.

“This will be your final test” The doctor opened a door. Melani hobbled forward. Her walking was getting a little smoother. She walked as if her right leg had a limp, it didn’t feel right still. She came to the doorway. Before her was a set if winding stairs. The doctor looked up and nodded. “All the way to the top. Once you make it, then I will release you...” He then held his arm out.
Melani slowly approached the first step. She sucked in a deep breath and lifted her right leg. Her boot came down upon the first step, and she lifted her left.
“Don’t use your arms to propel yourself, just your legs...” The Doctor spoke.
Melani looked to the rail and then sighed deeply. She pushed down on her leg and made the first step. She yelped, as if there was pain, but there was none. She made it to the next step... and then repeated this process.
Over the span of 10 minutes she had finally made it one floor, only 4 more to go. She steadily focused on getting all her joints to respond to her. Her leg lifting - lowering, pushing. She could control it, but the lack of feeling in her leg - it blocked that communication, it was slow. She made it up another floor, 30 minutes had passed.
The doctor leaned against the wall, watching her. He said nothing.
Melani looked up and then grit her teeth. She forced herself to move faster, she didn’t want to be up here anymore. Within minutes she was waddling up the stairs. Enough to get by. When she got to the top - she placed both hands on the rail and glanced down, her chest heaving slightly.
The doctor came up and then smiled. “Good enough... Alright then. I release you, you are fit to travel... Walk as much as you can...” He then stepped over to the elevator. He punched the button.
Melani stepped over to the elevator. “Oh no, you have to walk down” he laughed and stepped inside. He hit the close door button and the elevator closed.
Melani stared to the steel doors and then grumbled. “Ass hole...” She whispered and then turned back to the stairs. She placed a hand on the rail and then lowered her leg down. She wanted to feel an impact, the pressure of her body on her leg. Nothing. She could feel it in her thighs, her hips, but nothing.
Going down was easier, one step at a time - but it felt uncomfortable, for sure. Soon enough she stood at the bottom of the steps. She turned and made her way down the hallway, her knees bending - foot pressing down, she walked...
She turned to the door of her room - Jules was sitting in the room. “Jules..” She smiled and stepped inside. She slowly made her way to the edge of the bed and she sat down. “You doing okay? Hugo told me...” She shook her head. “I’m really sorry... Lyonel can be a real ass...”
“The doctor has released me to travel, I’m not sure if you are ready yet? We got the Zen... All I need is a bit of time, and the right tools. There is a Research Engineering Lab in Korasant, That is about 4 hour train ride away...” She stood then and turned towards Jules.
“We’ve made it this far... I just need to get that damned Bracelet off you...” She crossed her arms then. A moment later Hugo came into the room, Lyonel behind him. “We are headed to Korasant then?” Hugo spoke, clearly eavesdropping...
“As soon as we can, yes” she smiled weakly. Lyonel stepped into the room and looked to Jules and then to Melani.
“There are a whole lot of hunters searching for you...” Lyonel crossed his arms. “I’ll trail you both and take out, or convince others to hunt something else... Try to keep your trail clean...” He looked to Jules then and sighed softly. “I’ll go see if you can be released...” He turned the and made his way out of the room...

Over the next few weeks the doctors pumped medications into Jules to help her recover. The headaches were the worse part. The whole room would seem to move with each noise, like an earthquake from each movement. Jules’ memory wasn’t exactly concrete. She’d forget things sometimes, but for the most part she was okay.
“Lilly Bridgewater?” A voice asked.
Jules was fast asleep, though to the sound of the voice her eyes fluttered open. A man stood over her his head tilted to the side slightly as he looked over her.
“You’re very well hidden.” He chuckled. “It’s taken me weeks to hunt you down, Jules.”
Jules pushed herself up slightly, the monitor began beeping quickly as her pulse began to race. She clicked a small button that was in her hand, a nurse call button. “I’m sorry...I don’t know what you’re talking about...” She spoke softly.
The man raised a brow as he watched her, “Jules Brisco, you are a wanted ---”
“Excuse me, Sir.” The nurse walked into the room. “Who are you?” She then looked to Jules whom looked frightened. “I think it is time for you to leave.” The nurse watched him closely.
The man scoffed, “Do you have any idea who I am?” He questioned as he turned.
“You’re not allowed to be back here.” The nurse spoke, “Don’t make me call security.” She moved between Jules and the man her eyes never left him. She placed a hand on Jules’ knee.
The man tightened his jaw. “I see.” He chuckled then. “Just you wait until you’re released.” He stood a moment longer before he disappeared from the room.
The nurse looked to Jules as she lifted a device to her mouth. “Security be on the look out for a tall male, slender build, black hair, brown eyes. He was threatening a patient.” She then placed her hand on Jules’ shoulder. “You’re safe here.” She nodded.
Jules let out a long breath. “Th-thank you.” She bit her lip slightly. She could only imagine the amount of hunters after her...they had been sedentary for nearly a month now.
“Of course, oh, Dr. Reid would like you to walk around.” She gave a gentle smile. “Why don’t you go visit Melani? I hear she is getting released today.”
Jules nodded, “Okay.” She smiled as she moved and slowly swung her legs over the edge of the bed. The dizziness overcame her for a moment, swirling around quickly before it settled. Jules stood carefully and pulled on her beanie and goggles. She then walked from the room and down the hallway. She made it to Melani’s room and sat down letting out a long sigh. She looked to the empty bed a long moment and then her mind began to wander, who was that man?
Before long Melani was back in the room. “Mel.” Jules smiled, “You’re doing great...I can hardly tell...” She looked to the prosthetic leg. “Oh...yes, I’m okay...” She nodded. “Just working through the um...kinks.” She looked to Melani’s eyes then just as the others came into the room. She when to speak as Lyonel walked off.
Hugo looked to her, “What’s troubling you, Jules?” He asked a brow raised.
Jules shook her head, “I’m sure it’s nothing...” She then looked to Melani. “The necklace...do you think it could lead us to the other cities?...or...maybe it is a key?” She questioned softly.
Hugo shifted slightly, “Back to your troubled look.” He chuckled. “What happened?”
Jules took in a breath, “There was a man in my room when I woke...the nurse ran him off....but I think he was a hunter...”
Hugo narrowed his brows, “What did he look like?” He questioned.
“Um...” Jules thought a long moment. “Uh...” She let out a breath, her memory of him was already fuzzy.
“No need to worry.” The nurse stepped into the room, a smile on her lips. “Our officers have apprehended him, he had quite the arsenal on him. Nothing a few tasers shots couldn’t take down. He won’t be bothering you, Lilly.” She smiled and cupped her cheek. “Dr. Reid says she is free to your care, so long as you keep her calm, no running. Hm?”
Hugo looked to Jules a moment before he looked back to the nurse. “When will her memory recover?”
The nurse shifted slightly and shook her head, “It could be in a few weeks, it might not ever happen...” She spoke softly.
Jules lowered her eyes slightly. She hated the trouble she’d had with her memory since Lyonel hit her. Or was it the wolves? Did his strike just compact the injury? She watched as the nurse left the room and she looked back to Melani. “So, let’s go get this thing off hm?” She held up her hand that still had the gauntlet on. “We’ve come this far, like you said.” She smiled. Jules stood and crossed her arms as Lyonel came back into the room.
“You’re cleared to go, I’ll keep the trail clean for you guys.” He nodded.
Jules watched him a moment, Hugo told her about what happened, she never fully remembered him hitting her in the side of the head as they exited the caverns. Jules was quiet as she watched Lyonel exit the room. She walked out of the room with Hugo as they waited for Melani to get dressed. Soon enough they were headed into town. Jules leaned her head back slightly as the sun kissed her cheeks. It had been awhile since she’d felt the warmth of the sun. She smiled as she walked ahead.
Hugo took a swig from his flask. “Ahh.” He sighed happily. “I’m glad you two are out of there.” He spoke as they came to the train station. He stepped forward and offered his card. “Three for Korasant.” He spoke.
The woman looked to him a moment, “Hugo?” She asked she looked to his card and grinned. “It’s been awhile.” She chuckled.
Hugo smiled back to her, “Rachel?” He asked and chuckled. “Yes, it has, I’ll never forget your eyes though.” He winked as he took the three tickets into his hands. “Next time I’m in town, I know where to find you.” He winked as he led Melani and Jules forward. “First love huh?” He chuckled as he held the tickets forward to the train conductor.
“Melani Foxtran.” The conductor bowed. “A pleasure. Please, you and your friends must travel first class.” He led them onto the train and forward to the furthermost front cart. No one was in it.
Jules looked around the beautiful cabin. She took in a breath as she sat down on one of the velvety seats. “Melani, that necklace...can I see it?” She asked softly. She reached forward and took it into her hands, her breathing increased and her eyes glowed slightly. She grit her teeth and set the necklace down on the table. “Why...can’t I touch it...?” She stared to it. “It’s a map...Mel look.” She stood and looked closely. “Hugo, pick it up and hold it still.”
Hugo did as he was told. “How is this a map?” He questioned.
Jules pulled her flashlight from her pack and clicked it on. She aimed it at the necklace. It cast a shadow on the side of the train cart. The lines led to 4 different areas and then the lines all converged in on one central location. “Look.” She pointed. “This must be the main city...” She stared to it, “Where is this?” She questioned as she looked to Melani.
