Rhys looked to the queen as she spoke with her new accent. Her eyes watched her and then she moved to look to the others in the room. She could see that just the words of this woman were powerful against the humans. Her mind began to churn as she tried to imagine what was different about her that made her immune to such seductions. Though she didn’t have much time to think before she heard the shout as well. She turned her attention to the queen whom ordered her to go. “Thor, come on boy.” She spoke as she turned and rushed from the room. The screams. Rhys could hear the screams before they even left the bunker, her brows pulled together slightly. Vargar were such unsightly creatures, created by the asteroid. If anything she wanted every last one dead. She’d been hunting them for 200 years and it seemed like roaches that they kept coming back, more than before. She killed 1 and 3 came to replace it.
Rhys rushed forward with the queen, she drew her bow and two arrows from her quiver. The tips glinted in the setting sun laced with silver. She’d learned quickly that the beasts were weak against silver. Much like the Lycans from the books. She released her arrows and they sliced through the air landing in the chest of her first target. The Vargar howled as it stumbled backward, the skin of its chest singed as though a fire had lit inside of him. No magic. Rhys had heard the queen, but...if it didn’t quite look like magic, was it still magic? Rhys could sent her magic into the arrows that she shot, pre-load the arrow and set it aflame within the beast. Though Rhys didn’t have much time before the other two Vargars rushed in her direction snarling like the rabid beasts that they were. She lifted her bow but it was knocked from her grip. Rhys stumbled back and rolled on the ground as her leg was snatched by one of the Vargar. She writhed within his grip as he lifted her from the ground by her ankle. She stared into the drooling joules of the creature as she took in quick breaths. “Not yet.” She whispered as she pulled her blade. She sliced it across his neck swiftly. Blood splattered across her body and she fell toward the ground landing with a harsh thud.
Rhys grit her teeth as her vision blurred slightly from the nearly 10 foot fall. She took in a shaken breath as her eyes lifted to see the queen pressed against a tree by one of the two remaining Vargars. She watched as she ripped the fangs from the beasts mouth and slammed it into the temple of the creature. It was then that the final Vargar lunged toward the queen, fangs bared ready to make the kill. Rhys picked herself up and lifted her dagger from the ground. She yelled out as she rushed forward, her boots kicked up dirt behind her as she moved quickly. The vargar paid no attention to Rhys though, his eyes were set upon Lena. As he snapped toward her suddenly Rhys slammed into the side of the beast and they toppled to the ground. The Vargar snarled as it clutched onto Rhys. “No….magic...” She grit her teeth. This was the point where her magic would save her. Where she could get out of a sticky situation quickly. She cried out as the claws of the creature sliced into her skin. Rhys sliced into the chest of the beast, but with him holding onto her arms she couldn’t stab into him. She rolled and slammed her fist into his side. She kneed into his ribs harshly as she fought against his grip.
The Vargar snarled as Rhys managed to get her grip loose, her blade sliced across his jaw which caused him to bite down on the blade and rip it from her grip. She let out a cry as she was once again slammed to her back. Rhys stared up into his eyes as she pushed up against him, keeping his snapping jaws just inches from her throat. Then suddenly the Vargar was knocked from her chest. Thor snarled as he bit into the throat of the beast and ripped it out, blood splattered across the ground. Rhys scrambled to her feet and she grabbed her blade and sank it into the skull of the creature. She fell to her knees breathing heavily, blood leaked down both of her arms from the claws of the creature. Thor whimpered as he nuzzled his head into her chest. He gazed up into her eyes with blood splattered across his beautiful fur. “I’m okay.” Rhys spoke after a few moments as she took a trembling hand and pulled the dagger from the skull of the creature. “I’m alright, Thor.” She stood and looked to the ripped material of her jacket, the dark thick color of blood on it. Her eyes then lifted to the queen and she stepped to her side and offered a hand forward to help her to her feet. “Are you alright?” She asked, blood leaked down the palm of her extended hand and smeared against Lena’s palm as she pulled her to her feet. “Fucking Vargars...” She muttered.
“That...was incredible...” Peter stood with several men and women at the opening to their bunker. They had gotten a first row seat in the performance. He walked to the two with Rhys’ bow in his hands. “Are you hurt?” He asked as he looked to the blood on Rhys’ jacket.
“I’m alright, just a few cuts.” Rhys gave a smile as she grabbed the bow and tossed it over her shoulder. Though the cuts on her arms were rather deep, she knew they would heal and her jacket covered the full extent of the injuries, who was to say the blood wasn’t from the beasts? She pat Thor’s head and looked to him as he pushed his head against her thigh.
“We’ve lost several of our people to those creatures since we first surfaced. We can’t fight them with the weapons that we have, the tools that we have. They just keep coming back and taking more lives...and you...” He looked around to the 6 dead bodies of the Vargars. “You two killed 6 of them...” He smiled and placed a hand on Rhys’ shoulder as he nodded. “I doubt I have much thinking to do on the subject.” He looked to Lena then. “You’ve convinced me enough, where do I sign?” He grinned to her, “Come, come inside we can get you cleaned up. It’s getting dark. I can’t be safe during the night hours...right? We don’t have much food, but we can find you something...as a thanks...” He glanced to the body of the woman that was ripped to pieces. “We can’t lose anymore of our people like this...”
Rhys looked to Lena as she took in a breath, her trust of strangers wasn’t much. Even if it was a kind gesture. She hadn’t been around humans in such a long time all she could think about was what it was like on the streets for her before everything. Getting kicked by passerby humans. Getting called a filthy scum, or a leach to society. Thor whined slightly as he saw the expression on Rhys’ face. She seemed rather troubled in that moment. Rhys looked down to the wolf and gave a weak smile as she ran her fingertips through his thick coat, though she seemed to be off in another world...

Lena jumped slightly as Thor came barreling down on the Vargar, his vicious teeth ripping into the flesh of the beast. She slowly stood and then she froze in place. Her eyes slowly looked over Rhys. 98 Beats per minute… 98.7 degrees. The scent alone. She sucked in a deep breath and then finally broke her stance, smiling weakly. “My great great grandfather was a MMA pro fighter, he and his friends taught everyone in our bunker, eventually it just became a big mosh pot of fighters. Its what we did for fun, like a version of fight club” she winked and she hid her bloodied arm from their gaze. “It has been quite helpful…” she nodded and followed them into the small underground home.
The mayor walked over to Lena then as she sat down on a chair before a wooden table. “You’re hurt” he spoke and grabbed onto a bag, with a medical symbol in the middle. He sat down across from her and opened it up. “You know…” he thought for a moment as his hands laid out all of the supplies. “I worried what the other people would be like, you know…? People go stir crazy, what if some bunkers didn’t have good leadership?” he thought out loud. “at least yours had a drive – and some entertainment. I worry the kind of brutes that may have been bred. That I will make a home – and it would be ripped from us. I know in the long past people would curse a government, but in reality… leadership, even order – is necessary” he shrugged his head.
“Hmm, I know what you mean…” Lena pulled her jacket off, revealing her pale arms to the world. They were lean, not too bulky, but not thin. There was 2 big gashes on her forearm, and many scratches. She winced slightly as he touched her arm, watching him closely then.
“You have a high pain tolerance” he spoke as he poured alcohol over it. He dabbed it slightly, cleaning it out as he could.
“Mm, sometimes” she chuckled, her eyes glancing to Rhys briefly. They talked back and forth, of nothing really. She shared experiences that are blatant lies.
“Where is the bathroom?” she questioned as she stood – her arm wrapped cleanly in a fresh bandage.
“Right this way” The mayor stepped forth and led her down a hallway. As they turned the corner – Lena grasped his shoulder and sunk her teeth into his neck. It happened in a flash – her speed was incredible. She wiped her lips and stepped back a moment. The Mayor came to – as if he had a minor hiccup.
“You okay?” she questioned and smiled. “You just stopped” she chuckled. “I’ll uh, go in the bathroom now” she pushed past him and entered the room. She stepped over to the stall and sat down on the toilet. She leaned back then and held a hand to her head.
“Who are you?” The Mayor questioned – a gun held up, pointing at a man. He was outside the small bunker, late at night. The man smiled then and stepped forward.
“Corvus” he spoke in a royal thick tone. He was tall, roughly 6 foot 5 or so. Skinny, with crystal blue eyes…pale skin. He leaned in and took in a long breath through his nose. Then suddenly he leaned back – his lips covered in blood. “If you come across a woman named Lena…” he took the back of his hand and wiped away the blood. “You will let me know…” he spoke. A moment later – a young girl was next to him, his hand upon her shoulder.
“What – no, that is my daughter” he spoke and shook his head. “Please, whoever you are, don’t do this”
“Fly this flag… that will be the sign. Then… you will get your daughter back, hm?” Corvus grinned then.
“How do you know I will find her?” he questioned, eyes moving franticly then, fear filled his body.
“Your base and hers are not far… simply…look” he disappeared then, purple smoke lingering in his spot…
Lena stood suddenly and walked outside of the room. She stepped to Rhys and tugged her aside. “Come” she lead her away, whispering softly of the scene she had just seen of his memory. Corvus – a very powerful and ancient Vampire. It didn’t appear that the Mayor knew exactly what Corvus was, but only that Lena was the only ticket to save his daughter.
“We have to make a choice” she spoke softly. “Leave and be hunted… confront him, hm… I could kill him…” she thought for a moment and looked to Rhys. “Okay, Second hand.. what do you think?”

Rhys followed her eyes glanced about the bunker, she could feel the eyes of the people upon her. Her skin had paled in appearance and her breathing was quick and shallow. She sat heavily in a chair as Thor leaned against her legs, he lay his head on her thigh and she pet him gently as she closed her eyes. “You don’t look so well.” A young man spoke as he approached Rhys and Thor. “He has a cut on his chest there...” He pointed to a bloody spot on Thor’s chest.
Rhys opened her eyes to look to the man, “I’m alright, just tired.” She replied, “I didn’t see that cut...” She drew her brows together slightly as she leaned forward and looked to his chest.
“May I?” The man asked as he sat on the floor before the wolf with a med kit. Thor whimpered at the man and lifted his head to lay back on Rhys’ lap.
“Go on.” Rhys spoke as she hugged his head, she looked to the gash and sighed softly.
The man began cleaning the wound carefully. He worked quickly his movements were very well planned. “My great great grandfather was a veterinarian. He passed down his notebooks through the generations that have spent their lives here in the bunker...” His eyes focused on Thor as he wrapped gauze around the wolf’s chest packing the wound carefully. Then when he was finished he raised his eyes and he bit his lip slightly, “You’re not just tired...” He spoke as he reached forward to grasp her arm.
Rhys pulled her arm back, “I’m fine.” She stared into his eyes. “It’s just a scratch.”
“That is not...”
That was the moment that Lena returned and Rhys quickly rose to her feet. “Thank you.” She nodded and turned swiftly to follow the queen. Thor on her heels. Rhys was quiet as she spoke of the vision that she’d had. She watched the woman carefully. Enemies were already surfacing and they hadn’t even been out of the bunker for a month. She sucked in a breath and shook her head. “I...” She closed her eyes, her body was taxed from her injuries. She was strong, but rest was the best medicine for her to heal. “How many does he have?” She asked then in a hushed tone. “Depending on how aggressive he is...could we fight him?” She leaned against the wall then and shook her head. “I can’t fight now...I’ll need rest before I can fight...and...” She pressed her lips together, “Magic.” Her voice was hushed her eyes locked on Lena. “What are the weaknesses?” She questioned. “You told me garlic wasn’t one.” She smirked, though her expression was tired. “Or we could convince the old man not to raise the flag. You can do that, can’t you?”
“Your friend is really hurt...” The man from moments ago stepped to their sides, his eyes looked to the queen and then he looked back to Rhys. “I can’t let you kill yourself just because you want to act tough. We are only human, we break, we aren’t machines.” He held the medical bag in his hands as his eyes searched hers.
Blood dripped from Rhys’ fingertips to the concrete beneath her. She lifted her emerald eyes to look to the worried man. She couldn’t deny her injuries now that they were seen. She looked to Lena then and nodded, “Why don’t you talk to him? I’m sure we can work something out.” She nodded to the queen then, “I should work this out before it kills me.” She gave a slight smirk, she knew the wounds wouldn’t kill her. She was injured much worse before by a Vargar, much, much worse. She’d survived a gash so deep to her back that her bones could be seen. But, the injuries that she had on her arms, well, those could threaten the life of a normal human. So she had to play along. Rhys followed the man into the room and sat down on the bed that he pointed to. Thor jumped up on the foot of the bed and lay down with a groan as he curled into a ball.
“Let’s see...hm?” He nodded to her, “Could you take off that jacket?” Rhys nodded almost reluctantly as she removed her tattered jacket. It stuck to her bloodied arms as she pulled it from her body. Her biceps where the Vargar held her had deep puncture wounds, and her forearm on one of her arms had deep lacerations along the length of the arm. She grit her teeth as he moved her arm about. He began cleaning and the sting of the alcohol made her feel light headed. She took in a shaken breath and closed her eyes. “It’s incredible that you’re standing and moving around.” He spoke as he began stitching her wounds shut and wrapping her arms. He was quick, that was for certain. As he finished with one arm he moved to the other. “You know the mayor has a daughter.” He spoke his voice soft, almost sad. “She was taken a few nights ago...he won’t talk about it...to any of us...” He sighed as he finished up the dressing and zipped the bag shut. “He has been a mess since she was taken.” He shook his head. “Do you think your people could help find her? I mean...the way that you fight.” A crooked smirk curved up his lips. “It is impressive, I’ve never seen two women fight like that, defending our entire bunker.” He was clearly smitten by her.
Rhys looked to him with her emerald eyes, a soft smile upon her lips. “I’m sure we can work something out.” She nodded as she looked to her arms that he’d wrapped up carefully. “Thank you for taking care of that.” She looked to him a long moment.
The man shifted slightly, he was still kneeling before her. His eyes searched hers a long moment before he stood, “Of course. Anytime...but just don’t hurt yourself too often hm?” He chuckled and scratched his head slightly, almost as if he was nervous. This was something that Rhys was uncertain of. Had she said something? Did he know she was different? “I’m Will….by the way.” He gave a smile, “I missed your name...and his...” He looked to Thor whom was fast asleep.
“Oh...I don’t plan on hurting myself.” Rhys chuckled softly, “Will...I’m Rhys.” She gave a smile and then pat Thor’s side. “This is Thor, he’s my trusty side kick.” She glanced around the room, it had two beds in it and was bare other than that.
“Well...this is the guest room...if you need anything, just let me know. I’ll...um get Lena for you...” He watched her another moment, seemingly frozen in place. Almost as if he was waiting for something before he finally turned and stepped from the room.
Rhys raised a brow curiously. She wasn’t used to human interaction. To her this man was awfully strange. She lay back on the bed and let out a heavy breath as her muscles relaxed. This is what she needed to heal, peace and quiet. She took in deep even breaths as she lay with her eyes closed, she wasn’t asleep, but to any that passed the open door it would appear that she was sleeping. She was listening to those around her. Listening to the conversations in the hall of the fight and how incredible Lena and Rhys were. How they’d saved them. What would they have done without them? These words drifted through the air with a high energy static that caused Rhys to smile slightly. In the past she was a nuisance now, she felt like a hero of sorts. But then again, a hero that was coupled with a vampire...not so much a hero then...she began to wonder how Lena knew Peter’s memory. Could she just tap into memories? Lena knew that she saw the asteroid hit...how did she know these things? It was a question she would need to ask her another time perhaps. When would this vampire that was Lena’s enemy return to the bunker to check on the human that he’d blackmailed? Was he watching now? Was he to blame for the Vargar attack. She had so many questions. This was just how Rhys was wired, she wanted to know, she wanted to map out everything and make a plan. That is what helped her to survive the past 200 years...

Lena smirked slightly, the question to Rhys was more of a test, perhaps. They had three routes. The Passive - persuasive, the destructive, or the coward route. Lena nodded "Excellent choice...." she stepped away then and walked down the corridor. She knocked on a door then - and it opened. Peter stood before her, smiling.
"Lena, I figured you'd be relaxing, what can I do for you?" he questioned, opened the door wider then for her to come in. It was an office room, but at one side of the room was a bed. "Something to drink?" he questioned.
"Please, anything you have. Make it... strong" Lena closed the door and stepped over to the small couch sat infant of a coffee table, another couch opposing her. She sat and leaned back, crossing her legs as she watched him pour two whiskeys. "Thank you" she reached up and took the glass. She swirled it slightly and took a long inhale, before sipping. "Hmm... not bad, a little dry" she nodded. "So, Mr Mayor, how did you get in charge around here?"
"Going right for the throat hm?" Peter sat down and lifted his drink. "Cheers" he took a sip. "Our previous leader actually died not long ago. We were in a state of distress, borderline chaos. I never really wanted this" he sighed "but it fell in my lap, and here we are" he sipped once more. "And you? The leader? By the looks of it - Rhys seemed pretty ahead of things..." he smirked.
"I run things from the background - I have a pretty good crew, everyone has their job, their role. Rhys - " she lifted the glass and took a sip. "She is my strong arm, she makes movement, motions, she is not to be trifled with" she smiled then, pursing her lips together slightly.
"It is strange..." Peter thought for a moment. "Two women?" he chuckled. "You are really raising the bar for all future women in this new world" he raised his glass.
"This world that is out there... it is vicious. We can protect our people as much as we can, but in some form it will come down to individual strength and will..." she leaned back then and smiled. "Tell me - have you come across anyone else?" she questioned, her brows raised as she bit her lower lip slightly. Every motion caused him to lean forward, his body showing allure.
"Hmm..." he thought for a moment. "I saw something... yes..." he sucked in a breath. He finished his drink and set it down. "A man, tall... black hair, pale, very tidy. He was wearing some... old clothing, stuff I've read in books, you know?" he stood and walked over to the small table to refill his drink. "He..." he turned to her then.
Lena stood and walked over, her glass empty. She set the glass down on the table and brought a hand up to his cheek. "You can tell me..." she whispered, her voice soft like velvet. Her finger stroked his Cheek - which was slightly prickly, a late 5 o'clock shadow.
"He took my daughter..." his eyes had grown swollen, full of tears. Lena titled her head and cupped his cheek - she leaned forward then and placed a single kiss upon his lips. Peter's eyes closed - the kiss lasted a mere second, but for him it drew on for ages. His heart pounded in his chest, his mind full of a endorphins, so much it was like toxic to his brain.
"He was looking for me, wasn't he?" she questioned as she pulled back, smiling weakly.
"He said to raise that flag.." he pointed to the desk table, a flag was folded into a perfect triangle... "Why? Why did he know you, why did he steal my daughter?"
"Mmm..." Lena filled her drink then and stepped away. "He is my brother" she spoke and sighed softly. "His name is Corvus, he is a bit of a maniac... he left the bunker early, against my wishes..." she turned to him. "What this world will do to you... the scientists calculated that now was the best time, you see? The Meteor that landed released a kind of biochemical, that just now has faded in the furthest reaches. The closer you get the meteor - you become poisoned, it morphs your DNA... you saw what he could do, hm?"
"Yes... he teleported..." Peter stepped to the couch then, his knees wobbled and he sat down, clearly shook.
"It is a danger that the public know this. People will head for the rock - looking for super powers. The truth is that it will kill you, bit by bit" she shook her head. "I have very knowledgeable scientists on my side, Corvus wants me to find a cure for him...but he..." she sucked in a breath, her eyes watering then. "He betrayed me in ways I cannot dare to speak..."
Peter brought a hand to his chest and he let out a long breath. "I won't hang the flag... but..." he looked up. "You have to help me get my daughter" he spoke with a broken voice. "Please..."
"I will talk to Rhys, gather some information..." she finished her drink then and stepped over. "I am sorry... your suffering is..." she shook her head and then placed a kiss upon his forehead. "I hope you rest..." she stood then and walked out of the room.
Peter was already asleep - her kiss had some how dozed him away... Lena closed the door quietly and walked into the guest room where Rhys was. "It is done..." she pulled something from her back - the flag. "He has agreed to keep the flag down, but of course we must rescue his daughter... Are you tired?" she questioning, grinning then. "This flag is from Corvus, his rotten stench will be all over it. I wonder if your friend Thor can track him down..."

Rhys was nearly asleep by the time that Lena stepped into the room. She sat up quickly as the words reached her ears which caused Thor to stiffen and sit up in a hurry as well. The wolf looked to Lena and then huffed before he lay his head in Rhys’ lap. Rhys grinned as she saw the same curve on Lena’s expression. “I’m not tired, no.” She replied, “It takes a lot to wear me out.” She laughed lightly as she watched Thor jump from the bed and pad over to the vampire. He extended his head forward and sniffed the flag. The wolf put his ears back and growled slightly before he took a few steps back. “I’d say there is a smell on it that Thor isn’t too fond of. Hm?” She stood and looked to her ripped jacket before she sighed. She moved to the end of the bed where a small dresser sat. She pulled open the drawer and shuffled around in the neatly folded clothes before she found an old black long sleeve button up shirt. “You owe me a jacket.” She spoke with a smirk as she looked to Lena. “I’ve had that for almost 100 years, it was a good jacket. Still would be if I could have used my magic.” She spoke in a hushed tone though she laughed after she spoke.
“Well, what are we waiting on then? Thor you have the stench?” She looked to the wolf whom looked to her and then pressed his head against her palm of her hand before he stepped to the door. Rhys looked to Lena and nodded, “Off we go.” She grabbed her bow and tossed it and her quiver over her shoulder before she stepped from the room. As they rounded a corner Rhys nearly ran right into the chest of a man that towered over her. He had a gun on his hip as he looked down to her his eyes moved to Lena. “Uh….excuse me.” Rhys spoke her expression confused.
“Where are you two going?” He asked his arms crossed over his muscular chest. This guy looked like he could lift Rhys up and snap her in two and then use Lena as a toothpick.
Rhys didn’t budge as she looked up to him. “I don’t have to answer to you, you know?” She drew her brows together. “But if you must know we’re going to go save the mayor’s daughter.” Her voice was full of irritation. She wasn’t used to asking permission to leave. Nor was she used to so much interaction. In that moment she wished she’d stayed in for dinner the night before. She could have avoided this entire mess. But no. She wanted to get a fresh kill for Thor. Of course.
The man shook his head. “No one goes out after the sun sets.” He spoke in his deep voice. “No matter what the case is. No one in. No one out.”
“Unless it is an emergency.” Will the man that bandaged Rhys’ arm poked his head from a nearby room.
The soldier looked to Will and scoffed. “Unless it is by the mayor’s orders. We aren’t getting flooded by those monsters for these two to leave us defenseless with the door wide open.”
Rhys grit her teeth and went to speak. But Will began first. “They are trying to help us.” He spoke as he stepped forward. “Didn’t you see them fight off the monsters earlier? They saved us. Those things would have killed us. No doubt about it.” He looked to Rhys and then to Lena a moment before he looked back to the man. “Let them go, they just want to help.”
The soldier took in a breath and grumbled slightly. “This.” He turned and poked his finger into Will’s chest. “This is your head if something happens, Will.” He pressed a button for the door to release.
Rhys nodded to Will. “Thanks.” She spoke before she slipped through the door. She listened to it lock back in place behind them as they made their way into the shadows of the night. Clouds lined the skies tonight, making it even more dark than usual. Rhys shivered slightly as the crisp night air nipped at her body. Thor looked to her and whined slightly before she nodded to him and he sniffed along, leading them forward through the night.
Rhys was attentive, she listened to sounds and her eyes darted about. She’d made it a point not to go out at night. Too many dangers. After nearly an hour of travel she glanced to Lena. “How do you know memories?” She asked curiously. “You knew mine. You know his. How do you know?” She’d come to a stop as Thor stopped as well. They stood at the top of a ridge that overlooked a valley. Rhys shivered again and drew her brows together. “Can you read minds? Or is there something else?”

"I'm going to guess - that you've never had guests before" Lena chuckled as she walked past the brute. Rhys was good - way more skilled than she expected. She acted like a seasoned vampire.... all this time alone, she wondered how she gathered these skills. Or perhaps - she just didn't fear. That was the strength of a vampire, of some one who could barely die. Fear, the blocker of humanity, slips away...
Lena held the flag in one hand, still folded nicely, as they walked through the forests. It was quiet - which she was sure was not a good sign in this new world. She sucked in a breath and opened her eyes. Her gaze glanced over - a red beating heart could be seen, from her vision, in a bush. It was fast, 182 beats per minute. A rabbit. It was frozen - waiting for them to pass by. "Thor" she pointed to the bush.
Thor paused - his nose in the air. He then turned swiftly and launched forward. This huge fangs snapped at the rabbit, breaking it's next with ease. "Let me see..." she stepped forward to the kill. She pulled out her knife and easily stabbed into it - the flesh peeling off with ease. Thor stepped forward then and sniffed it. She took the knife then and sliced off a chunk of meat and tossed it in the air. Then she disappeared. She reappeared seconds later. "A few clicks that way - a little bit of rabbit blood on the trees. We should get moving because the Vargars will make their way there..." she picked the flag back up and nodded.
As they continued onward she glanced over, a grin over her lips. "You've read any books on vampires?" she questioned. "You've had to read a lot, its the only way you'd know how to show such compassion, humanity, and all this knowledge - warfare too. No one taught you that.. you read it" she sucked in a breath then. "Some of the books are partly true, and of course, not so much" she lifted a finger. "You know the story that is actually the closest? Underworld captured it decently, minus..." she shrugged then. "Underworld captured the Lycan wars pretty well, but didn't go into much depth on the Ancients" she grinned then. "Ancients, and their descendants have unique powers. Not every Vampire has them..." she glanced up then. "Anyways, long story short, your blood" she glanced to her. "When I found you - you were wounded. A drop of your blood fell upon my finger - and I tasted it. So I got a glimpse, I don't see all of your memories. Just usually fragments, pieces. Actually - the world famous Sherlock Holmes was a vampire, he used this same power to solve mysteries... never did understand that guy..." she chuckled then.
"Sherlock Holmes - was tired of your shit, sister" a voice appeared. Then out of no where - a man appeared. Corvus. He grinned and crossed his arms over his chest. "As was I..." he looked over to Rhys. "Ah, how cute, you brought me dinner" he grinned then.
"Yes how cute. Let's cut to the chase. Wheres the little girl?" she questioned.
"Oh, how easy you are to bait... You are so much like a human, it pains me. With your humility, your innocent naive approaches." he scoffed then. "She is tied up in a shed, not far off" he smirked. 'If you make it that far. I waited over 200 years to see your face. For what you did to me so long ago... I'll make you pay" he suddenly launched forward.
Lena swiftly disappeared - they fought each other In blips of purple ash. Appearing once to land a blow, then disappearing. Suddenly then Lena was pinned down on the ground - Corvus's hands wrapped around her throat, he squeezed tightly with a vicious look upon his face. Lena reached forward and dug her nails into his skin of his arms. Though his body was different - it had grown in size, muscles bulging. Almost like a Lycan, but not. A hybrid.

Rhys glanced to Lena and gave a nod. “I’ve read plenty of books, yes.” She drew her brows together slightly, “I’ve read about all of the world wars, poverty...why things were the way they were before the asteroid hit...” She let out a chuckle then, “Fiction books I must confess have been my favorite.” She then shook her head. It was then that Lena pointed out the rabbit to Thor her eyes watched as the wolf took down the kill happily. She tried to keep up with Lena’s motions as she disappeared to smear blood upon the trees. Rhys went to speak more but that was when the unfamiliar voice spoke. Her eyes fell upon the man, Corvus. He was strong, that was easy to see. “I’m not a meal.” Rhys snapped back quickly her brows drawn together. Though that didn’t seem to phase the vampire as he lunged at his sister.
The fight was hard to keep up with for Rhys’ human eyes. She took a few steps back her dagger pulled from her hip, calculating. She could hear the sounds of punches landing back and forth then they stopped. Rhys rushed forward and slammed into the side of Corvus her dagger wedged between his ribs as they toppled to the side. Corvus let out a snarl as they landed with Rhys on top of him. She made to drive her dagger into his chest once again but he gripped onto her wrists. “You think you’re going to kill me?” He cackled as he easily flipped her onto her back and he pinned her down. Corvus licked his lips as he gazed into her eyes. “Perhaps I’ll start with my meal first? Before I kill Lena.” His fangs were visible as he spoke, though his fangs weren’t as slender as the other vampires Rhys had seen.
Rhys took in quick breaths, “I wouldn’t...if I were you.” She squirmed beneath his grip her hands that he held above her head balled into fists.
Corvus snickered once again, “Oh? You wouldn’t? Hm. I’ll take that into consideration.” He leaned forward to bite into her neck.
Suddenly Thor slammed into the side of the vampire, his jaws latched down on his arm and he was knocked from Rhys. She scrambled to her feet just in time to see Corvus knock Thor to the side. The wolf whimpered as he slammed against a tree and fell to the ground in a limp heap. Rhys stood with her bow drawn. “That is quite enough.” She spoke the arrow was notched in place.
Corvus only chuckled in response. “You can’t kill me girl. Don’t you understand that? Do you not know that you’ve been traveling with a vampire?” He questioned and glanced to Lena. “You didn’t tell her?” He let out a breath as if he was ashamed. “Poor dear.” He looked back to Rhys and lunged forward. He disappeared.
Rhys sucked in a breath and released the arrow. Flames engulfed the arrow as it sliced through the air and it struck Corvus in the shoulder. He appeared just feet before her as he ripped the arrow from his shoulder. Rhys notched another arrow but Corvus ripped it from her hands and tossed it away quickly as he advanced on her. Rhys raised her hands and flames flickered to life in her palms. Her heart was bounding within her chest. She blocked his hand as he latched forward, his skin sizzled from the heat of her hand. Rhys then lunged forward surprising the vampire. Her fists slammed against him quickly in hook and upper cut combos. She threw her body into slicing elbow motions and kneed him in the chest. Her movements were well calculated, but...it didn’t last long before Corvus disappeared making hits upon Rhys that she couldn’t block. She teetered back and forth and then all together she disappeared as Corvus grabbed a hold of her and teleported several feet away. As he reappeared his fangs were sunk deep into Rhys’ neck. He drank from her, but only for about 4 seconds before his eyes lit with what seemed to be that of flames. He dropped her body to the ground and opened and closed his fists as he felt the power coursing through him.
“You were keeping this from me Lena.” He grinned maniacally. Flames lit within his palms and he chuckled. “This is an incredible feeling. How does a human possess this?” He moved forward flames trailed in his each step. “I’m going to keep her alive so that everyone of my clan can gain this power.” He snickered as he trailed his fingertip along a tree and it burst into flames.
Rhys pushed herself up shakily. Her body trembled as she got to her knees. Her vision tunneled in on her as she tried to make sense of things. She distinctly remembered the pain of his fangs in her flesh. Her fingertips moved to where her skin was ripped, blood leaked over her fingertips. She looked to the bright crimson color as she tried to make out what Corvus was saying, the world around her sounded as though it was underwater. Rhys closed her eyes for a long second before she pushed herself to her feet. “You’re going to die.” She spoke as she staggered slightly.
This caught Corvus off guard, he spun to look to the human with a shocked expression. “How are you standing?” He stared to her. Rhys lifted her bow from the ground and notched an arrow. She didn’t respond to him as she loosed it and it sliced through the air. The arrow stabbed into his chest, into his heart. Corvus began to laugh as he looked to the arrow. “You think this is going to kill me?” He asked and shook his head. Though something happened then, the arrow began to jolt with electricity. Corvus jerked and his body fell to the ground convulsing as Rhys stepped forward slowly. Her hand held tightly over the ripped flesh of her neck. Her vision faded in and out as she fell to her knees. The surge of electricity being fed to Corvus subsided, it would only be a matter of seconds before the vampire got back up.

Lena gasped as Corvus was knocked away, she rolled over on the ground and slowly stood up. As she did - she looked over to see Corvus fang deep in Rhys. Lena's eyes turned dark red at that moment. "You'll regret that" she rushed forward then as Corvus and Rhys continued to fight. Right as she got close - Corvus lay on the ground, convulsing in electricity. "That won't keep him down..." she shook her head. "I can't finish him - neither can you..." she kicked his head - knocking him out. Slowly his body turned back to its original form. It was then that she pulled out a dagger than and ripped his shirt - she carved an emblem in his chest and then sliced her hand. She let her blood drip from her hand and fill in the carved emblem. "That'll keep him away..." she sighed deeply.
"If we kill him - his coven will come relentlessly. I need to scope out his people, and defeat him in a blood duel..." she reached down then and wrapped an arm around Rhys. "You'll be okay...." she helped her stand. Thor stood and slowly limped over. "Poor guy..." she whispered and placed a hand on his forehead. She sighed deeply and nodded. "Come on..." she helped her walk forward. They made it some way until they came across an old shack - it was overgrown with vines and earth, but there was a clear cut in the vines - the door was kicked in.
She forward - "Wait here" she left Rhys and entered. Sitting in the middle of the small dark shack was a little girl - tied up, with her mouth taped over.
"Relax - Relax. We are here to save you.. To take you home to your father, Peter" she knelt down then with her knife and cut the bindings. She slowly reached forward and removed the tape. "I am Lena, Rhys and her uh... dog are outside. Sniffed you out..." she smiled then and held a hand forward. "Lets go" she whispered and helped her up. The little girl was hesitant at first, but then followed...
She exited the shack with her and looked to Rhys. "Can you walk?" she questioned. "We need to get moving, hopefully we can get back undisturbed..." she smiled weakly...

Rhys fought to keep her eyes open as she was lifted by Lena. “He...isn’t normal...” She choked out, blood dripped from her lips. She glanced to Corvus as he lay limply on the ground. “Thor...” She touched the top of his head as he limped at her side. She hadn’t acted quick enough. She couldn’t see to protect Thor, he’d protected her but at what cost? Rhys was quiet as they moved along. Blood duel. She wondered what exactly that would entail. She thought of the emblem that Lena cut into her brother’s chest. There was ancient magic with the vampires that none of the books spoke of. She imagined that there were plenty of things that the books got wrong.
Rhys staggered as Lena released her. Thor leaned against her side and she used the wolf for support. He whined as he looked up to her and he licked her hand. “I’m okay.” She spoke to him as she lowered to her knees. The world was spinning around her. “I’m alright.” She leaned her forehead into the side of Thor’s head. He whimpered once again. She stayed like this as she waited on Lena. When she heard footsteps coming back from the shack she lifted her eyes to see Lena with the little girl. The little girl stared at Rhys, her breathing quickened. “She’s pale.” Rhys noted as she slowly pushed herself up, she narrowed her brows and then looked to Lena.
“They hurt me.” The little girl spoke, her voice a whisper. She held tightly onto Lena’s hand, she was terrified. “It hurt so bad...” Her eyes welled with tears.
Rhys carefully pushed herself to her feet. She stood still for a moment as the world spun around, she closed her eyes and then took in a deep breath. She stepped forward and offered a gentle smile. “We won’t hurt you.” She nodded as she looked over the girl. She didn’t see any blood or bruises on the girl. “How did they hurt you?” She asked almost cautiously.
The little girl looked away, she trembled slightly. “I...”
Rhys stepped forward and knelt in front of her, “It’s okay.” She touched her shoulder. That was it. The little girl turned, fangs showing. Her eyes were trained in on Rhys on the blood that leaked from the wound on her neck. She gasped in air but that only caused more of the sweet scent of Rhys’ blood to enter her nostrils. Rhys didn’t move though, she stood her ground, she didn’t allow fear to show on her expression. “You’re hungry. You don’t want my blood though, I can promise you that.” She gripped the little girl’s shoulder. “Lena here is a vampire, she can help. We will help you and we will get you home to your father.” Rhys slowly stood and nodded to Lena, “I know where we are.” She staggered slightly and Thor pushed against her with his shoulder to steady her. They were a well oiled machine. “We won’t make it back to their bunker tonight...” She glanced around, Thor growled lowly. “Especially with Vargar lurking in the woods around us...”
Rhys then looked to the little girl a moment before she started forward. She could hear her pulse in her ears, which she knew wasn’t a good sign. Her skin had become pale as she pushed forward. She weaved through the forest carefully her eyes looked about for threats, though her world still threatened to cave in on her. As they made it into the thick of the forest Thor’s hackles raised and he began to snarl. Rhys pulled her bow, “What is it?” She asked as she looked around, she couldn’t see anything. “Keep her close.” She glanced to Lena, her heart was racing within her chest. She looked back forward and just as she turned something slammed against her which easily knocked her to her back on the ground.
Thor snarled as he stood over her, protecting her. Rhys looked up to see a man with a smirk upon his lips. His eyes were dead set on Lena. He had golden eyes that seemed to glow in the darkness of the forest. “Lena, Lena, Lena.” His voice was smooth as velvet as it came over his lips. “Traveling with a young vampire and….a human?” He then looked to Thor. “And a wolf. Very, very strange. The fallout must not have treated your all mighty clan well, hm?” He grinned. He had thick canines that showed easily, he wasn’t bothering to hide it. “Funny that you’re traveling with a wolf, I thought you hated all things related to Lycans.” He stepped forward and stared to Thor whom snarled and snapped forward at him. “Enough.” He commanded. Thor stoped in his tracks and stared at the man before he moved to the side and lay down. “Good.” He then looked to Rhys. “Such a nasty wound you have there. Let me guess. Corvus.” He licked his lips and then laughed, “A nasty hybrid to go right along with the wound. Hm?” He tilted his head slightly. “I killed the lycan whom made him a hybrid. The idiot thought it was a good idea before Corvus killed nearly half my pack.” He growled. “So Lena.” The Lycan raised his eyes to the queen once again. “Perhaps you and I aren’t so different after all? We seem to have the same enemy.”
Rhys pushed herself up slowly, she stared to the man whom stood directly in front of her. “We aren’t making deals with you.” She spoke quickly.
“Oh? Not at all, hm.” He shrugged. “Shame. A vampire, a human and a Lycan working together. That would have made history.” He chuckled. “I suppose I’ll just send my friends this way, they’ll take care of you easily.” He shrugged made to turn.
Rhys grit her teeth as Thor stood and came to her side. “What is it that you want?” She questioned quickly.
“The same as everyone.” He turned and smirked to her. “I want to rise to the top.” He grinned. “But first, I want Corvus dead before he makes more hybrids, if he hasn’t already.”
Rhys took a step back. “I’ve read of Lycans, none of the lycans in the books could be trusted.” She looked to Lena then.
The lycan stepped forward a smug smile upon his lips. “How about this.” He mused. “I won’t kill you if you help me rid the earth of the hybrid. Fair trade.” He cupped her cheek and gazed into her eyes. “You’re going to kill him anyway, right?”
Rhys shook her head and stepped back from him. “Stop that.” She snapped, her head felt foggy. She glanced to the sides as she heard snarls from the bushes.
“Don’t mind them.” He smirked as he looked to greet the yellow eyes of werewolves that approached, they were out numbered, it was an entire pack of Lycans. “So long as you agree, no one gets hurt.” He smiled, happy with himself.
Rhys grit her teeth as she glanced to Lena once more. They didn’t have much of a choice but to work with the lycan. “Fine.” She finally spoke after several moments of silence.
He grinned, “We will keep in touch.” He chuckled before he turned and morphed before her eyes into his wolf form and disappeared into the woods along with the pack that was once surrounding them.
Rhys let out a breath and bit her lip slightly. “You know him I take it?” She asked and looked to Lena a moment before she continued on. It wasn’t but 30 minutes or so that they came upon a dark home. Her home. She climbed the stairs and pulled the key from her pouch and unlocked the door. Rhys pushed into the home, her steps were almost like that of someone that was intoxicated as she made her way to the fireplace. She snapped her fingers and the logs lit ablaze.
“Woah….” The little girl stepped to Rhys’ side and gazed to the fire. “How did you do that?” She asked in awe.
Rhys chuckled and stood, she staggered once again before she used the mantle to balance herself. “Very, carefully.” She looked to the young girl, “It’s a magic trick.” She then moved to the back of the home and clicked a few things into place, lights came on as the solar generator was activated. Rhys looked around the once dark room to the bookcases filled with books. She looked to Lena a moment before she collapsed onto the couch. Thor whined and nudged her hand that was covered in her blood. Her home was well kept. The kitchen was tidy and everything seemed to have its place. Weapons were hung upon the walls, more arrows were laying neatly on a crafting bench in the corner. It was clear that Rhys kept herself occupied. Though the amount of books made the home almost seem like a library.

Lena grit her teeth - but before she could respond Rhys had already spoke. She relaxed and sighed deeply. "Fine" she scoffed. She had to bury her anger, her hatred... but she was in no shape for war. No one was. She turned then as they continued onward. "Yeah, Trevor, he is the lackey of one of the Ancient Lycan leaders - Sevmoux, a French bastard..." she sighed. "We all know each other, in one form or another. We've all been fighting for so long, we don't even know why we are fighting any more. The people who started our war - are long gone. And yet... we still fight" she chuckled. "Now the hatred burns in just a cultural manner, though I cannot stand idle as they murder my people, history or none... Unfortunately - Sevmoux knows we are in no shape to fight. And neither is he. Hence the alliance..." she chuckled. "It is a good sign".
Soon they came across a cottage like home. It was strangley well kept. The bushes and garden were alive and groomed. "Hm?" she stepped onto the porch and observed. Fresh paint. Chairs, neatly organized. She stepped inside as the others did and her eyes looked about. "You are familiar, hm?" she stepped to the couch - where a pile of books sat on one side of it. She lifted one off the top - no dust, this was recently placed. She opened the first page - reading the quick glance. "Blood and Chocolate?" she laughed then. "A cute little story on Werewolves..." she set the book down. "So many of us, werewolf and vampire alike - went through their transition alone. Caught up in some second hand group. Our makers, deviantly changing others. Theres rules, on both sides, to control and navigate. Otherwise books and movies are released. People - trying to share their story to the world... even though often it was just a one percent. And then..." she turned and looked to Rhys - who had lit the fire. "Some mystical force makes the writers toss in false tones to dumb down their work, make it 'more relatable'" she chuckled then. "We had our ways to control the off sets..." she sighed then and walked over.
"Your home then... it is cozy, I like it..." she pushed another stack of books to the edge of the counter. She lifted a cup from the table and turned it upright. She then reached into her pocket and pulled out a powder, it was bright red. She then dumped it into the cup and ran some water into it, roughly 8 ounces.
"Emergency packs..." she turned and looked to the little girl. "Just for you, sweety, like fruit punch" she handed the cup down. The girl took the cup and drank swiftly - as if she had never drank before. Slowly her skin gathered color, and she breathed evenly once more. "What is your name?"
"Alisa" she spoke as she lowered the cup - a blood-stache below her nose. She wiped it away and licked her finger. "Thank you...i uh, did you say.. Vampire?" she questioned. "That explains the blood..." she shook her head.
"Unfortunately so..." Lena lead the girl to the couch, by the fire. "We've been around for as long as time it self. A gift, and a curse... We've done our best to keep it from humans. We have made our way... getting blood. Usually donated, or even tainted blood that hospitals can't use - we can drink safely... Things of that nature." she smiled weakly and sighed. "You got mixed up in all of this, and I am...so sorry" she cupped her cheek. "This new world is going to be rough..."
"What does being a vampire... mean for me?" Alisa questioned with a soft voice, her blue hues looking to Lena.
"You go on living. You can eat food, taste it, all that. But in the end you will need blood, one way or another..." Lena sighed. "If you don't get it, you go a little... crazy" she shrugged.
"So am I... dead?" she questioned.
"Hmm... No. You have blood in your body, your heart still pulses. You are alive, but now your DNA - what structures you, is different. Your muscles will be stronger, reflexes, mind, everything becomes enhanced." she smiled then. "Which can be quite helpful in this new world..." she chuckled slightly. "Hence why we were able to save you.. some really bad guys had you. They would have killed you, for sure..."
"So, I Get super powers then ? What about magic - like her" she looked to Rhys then.
"No magic, unfortunately. Rhys is something completely different. We're still not even sure" she winked at her. "Don't worry... I will take care of you. I will teach you how to be a vampire. We have an entire community of others too. I am working with your father to gather all of the people and find a new home. We vampires can offer protection against the unworldly horrors... we can rebuild, maybe start over" she smiled then. "But... we will have to convince your father... he will surely not be excited or happy to hear about this."
"Yeah, we have read the books before, all fantasy. Is Dracula... real?" Alina questioned with bright eyes.
Lena chuckled and leaned back in the couch. "Dracula? Yes, he is real. But not in the same sense. A lot of vampire stories were written in a way to sort of.... trick humans. Into reading something so obscure that they couldn't possibly believe it, but in a way... there were hints of truth here. Dracula was not the original vampire, but he was a vampire. He did some very.... bad things, nothing like the book says. Dracula is actually known, historically, as Vlad de Dracule, which is where the name derived. He was a romanian vampire - who was known for impaling the heads of his victims on spikes, all around his keep. Most were often his enemies. Over time his name was warped, his story, and thus... Vampires were written into the fantasy books" she smirked then. "There is even one of me" she glanced to Rhys. "I wonder if you have read it..." she stood then.
"Well... Alissa, let's do our best to keep this all a secret? I will work with you later hm? I'm going to wash up... and rest. And no, I do not sleep in a coffin - or upside down" she laughed then and made her way to the bathroom...

Rhys let out a soft chuckle as Lena realized it was her home. “Yes, it’s been my home for quite some time now. Plenty of food surrounding it. The Vargars don’t come near it thanks to my traps. I imagine the lycans won’t come near either, since they are related.” As she collapsed into the couch Thor kept close to her. “Funny how fantasy stories stem from reality, I always wondered if that was the case. Does that mean there have been others like me that could wield magic? Like Merlin?” She questioned curiously, though she didn’t truly expect an answer. She closed her eyes as she listened to the two banter back and forth. Lena was truly an interesting character. She felt like she knew her, like her personality was in a book somewhere. She opened her eyes once again when the two began speaking of Dracula and other old books.
Rhys raised a brow when Lena mentioned there was a book of her. So that was why she was so familiar. Rhys stood and stepped over to a wall of books, she thumbed through them quickly, she moved neat stacks to the side and tilted her head slightly. “This, is it.” She spoke as she pulled a book that was bound in black with bright blue words on the cover. “Evolution.” She spoke, “It was the written form of what then became the movies Underworld.” She looked to Lena and chuckled. “That why you said they got most of it right hm? Your eyes, they definitely got that right...and the hair….right?” Rhys looked tired as she spoke. Thor whined and nudged her. “I know.” She spoke to him and gave a sigh.
Alissa stepped forward and looked to the intricate binding of the book. “Can I read it?” She asked.
Rhys held the book forward and let out a chuckle. “Sure, it’s a good read. You wouldn’t think it was based anything on reality.”
Alissa grinned as she looked over the book cover. “In the bunker all I had were books.” She looked up to Rhys and then looked to the stacks upon stacks of books that she kept. “You read a lot too...huh?” She stepped to the bookcase and looked over the titles. There was everything from history, to scholarly books, to sappy romance novels. Rhys picked up just about anything she could find to keep her time occupied. She had been at this location for nearly 75 years, so her collection had grown, and to begin with the person who lived in the cabin before had already kept a collection of books.
Rhys chuckled softly, “Yes, that’s really all I’ve had, with the exception of my friend Thor for the past few years.” Thor bit onto her sleeve and tugged at her slightly. “Alright.” She nodded. “There is a spare room there or there are a few more upstairs.” She pointed for Alissa. “You wanted to get cleaned up?” Rhys asked, her exhaustion was becoming more and more evident in her expression. “I’ll show you the rooms upstairs….this is nice, I’ve never had guests.” She let out a soft laugh. Alissa was at Rhys’ side the book hugged to her chest, she looked to Lena with a smile. Rhys led them up the stairs. The halls were beautiful upstairs as well. A few more bookcases filled with books. Rhys pushed a door open. “Alissa, here you are.” She nodded as she looked into a neatly kept room that had a twin bed with a beautiful quilt of a bear and the mountains on it. “Bathroom is just across the hall.” Rhys nodded as she walked down the hallway. She pushed another door open and leaned against the frame slightly. “Here you are, Lena.” She looked into the room, it had a queen size bed with a beautiful mountain on the quilt. “The bathroom is just down the hall there...” She looked to Lena, “There should be some clothing in the closet….” Her emerald eyes fell slightly Thor tugged on her again. “I need to...rest...” She spoke as she pushed off of the wall.
Rhys turned to head down the hallway as Thor tugged her along. She pushed into the master suite of the home. It held a four post bed and a few more bookcases filled with more books. It had the balcony that overlooked the garden behind the home. Attached to the room was a master bathroom with a huge garden style tub. Thor whined as he tugged her forward. Rhys nearly fell against the bed as she climbed onto it. “Thank you old friend.” She pat his head as she collapsed into the pillow. She didn’t have enough energy to clean the blood from her body tonight. Thor climbed onto the bed next to her and curled up with his head on her hip. He whined again as he looked to her. He was clearly worried. It didn’t take long before Rhys’ breaths became deep and even and her muscles relaxed. Thor on the other hand remained with his eyes open, he watched the rise and fall of her chest. He stared to the wound on her neck like a worried sibling.

"Rest up" Lena nodded and made her way to the bathroom. She showered and cleaned up, Alissa had followed suit in an opposing bathroom. Soon enough she emerged - fresh clothing. Jeans, t-shirt, but she kept her jacket on. It was her staple. She walked into the living room, where Alissa sat - in an over sized t-shirt, and her ripped pants. They sat and talk for most of the night. Being vampires - sleep wasn't that necessary. They both had slumped into the couch and fallen asleep, the fire was just barely coals when morning came.
When the sun poked through the sliding glass door - Lena stood, her eyes squinting. She was never much of a fan of it. "So how come vampires crisp up in the sun?" Alissa asked as she stood in the sunlight - her hands held outward. "In the books and stuff" she looked over to Lena, smiling.
"Mmm, we tossed that into the lore. Make people think they're a little safe" she winked. "People don't want to imagine that we can blend right in. They want ways to easily point out those that are different. Throwing in a wow factor just makes it easier for people to understand." she shrugged. "Plus, its dramatic" she laughed then. "In a lot of ways - we are extremely powerful, to a negative degree. There is no fun in a story with characters that have no weakness, right? However, we do function less in the sun. We dehydrate faster, makes us need more blood than usual. Oh, and those pesky sunburns" she chuckled then.
The stove was on - she was making eggs in a basket. Toast loaded with eggs, bacon on the side. Sitting on the table was a thick raw steak, waiting for Thor. "Good morning - hope you don't mind .." she curved up 3 plates. One glass of orange juice, two glasses of red blood. They ate breakfast - small talk the entire way... Before she knew it - they were out in the forests, hidden by the canopy. "Not far" she spoke.
"Alissa!!!" Peter rushed forward, holding his arms outward. The little girl came running forward, she wrapped her arms around her father and hugged him tightly. His eyes looked up to Rhys and Lena, his mouth forming the words 'Thank you'. Lena smiled as she watched, and then turned to Rhys...
"We need to find this new Haven. Corvus will be on our tail... everyone here is going to get killed...I'll talk to Peter..." she spoke and then stepped away. She walked over to Peter and led him to the side. They spoke for several minutes - Peter stepped back briefly, his face full of sudden fear. Then Alissa grasped his hand. Peter looked down to his daughter - and then to Lena. Slowly he nodded then, his arm wrapping around his daughters shoulders, pulling her inward. A kind of ear lingered, but relief - the only thing that mattered was back.
Peter stepped away then and began to announcing for everyone to pack their things. It was then that Lena walked over to the flag pole and attached the hooks to the flag. The one Corvus had told Peter to hang... and she raised its not the air. It was the same seal that she carved on Corvus's chest. Their family seal. It was a simple design . It appeared as a shield, with a star drawn in the center... Lena turned then as the group gathered, standing infant of the base with bags in their hands. Peter stepped forward then and nodded. "Okay... where to?" he questioned.
Lena looked to Rhys then and nodded. "To New Haven, Rhys will guide us. My people should be there already..." she smiled.

Rhys slept through the night peacefully. She woke in the early hours of the morning and slipped from the bed. Thor raised his head for a moment and then curled into a tight ball to continue sleeping. Rhys stepped to her closet and grasped new clothing before she stepped into her bathroom and drew up a bath. She climbed into the hot water and the dried blood washed away from her body turning the clear water an orange color. After her bath she’d dressed herself in old tattered jeans and black military style boots. She wore a black tank top beneath an old navy ski jacket that she’d found a few years back. It was good for this time of year, the evening air was chilly in the mountains.
As she came down the stairs for breakfast Thor followed and sniffed the air happily. He danced about in the kitchen as he growled in excitement. Rhys chuckled as she looked to the wolf. “I don’t mind at all, and I think Thor is more excited than I am.” She smirked. Not a scratch was left on her body from the night before. It was as if it never happened. Soon enough they were making their way back toward the bunker that Alissa’s father was in.
The reunion was something that caused a smile to curve up Rhys’ lips. Though the smile was short lived as Lena reminded her that Corvus would be on their heels ready to attack the humans that they had befriended. New Haven was a good journey from here. But, hopefully it would be worth it. As a group the travel wouldn’t be as dangerous. Alone it was...a nightmare. To get to the valley that the city resided in, well, the monsters would seem to seep from the shadows. When Rhys first found the city she nearly died getting to it. She was running for her life through the streets of the city from terribly deformed beasts. Yet, as she entered a part of the city that seemed untouched by the greenery...the monsters fell back and she was given peace. Rhys remembered the feeling. Finally being away from the monsters that the asteroid brought. It was the first time she’d slept peacefully. This was where she learned to protect herself, where she learned what defenses were needed to live in this world.
“It’ll be a trek.” She spoke as she looked to the people once they gathered. “Together we should make it.” She looked to the scared eyes of the people and then she nodded to Lena before she turned and walked in the direction of New Haven. Rhys was accompanied by Alissa for awhile, questions of the world and the like. Questions on good books. It made Rhys smile more than she could ever remember herself smiling. Rhys was then approached by Will whom seemed nervous to talk to her, but also excited. Rhys entertained him, answering his questions which weren’t all that important. Just simple things, like her likes and dislikes. Rhys chuckled to his questions and shook her head. “Does it matter that much if I like the color blue?” She raised a brow as she looked to him, not realizing why he might be asking these things.
By the time the sun was setting Rhys had led the group into the edge of a cave system. She lit a fire by striking rocks together and grumbled the entire time about it. Rhys relaxed on a small pallet by the fire and gazed out to the cool fall landscape. She poked the logs in the fire and yawned lightly. Alissa came to sit at her side. “Rhys.” She spoke as she looked to her, her eyes looked almost gaunt. She looked sickly.
Rhys lifted her emerald eyes and drew her brows together. “Are you alright?” She asked. “You don’t look well.” She turned toward her.
“I don’t feel well no.” Alissa shook her head, “Thirsty though, I definitely feel that….where’s Lena?” She asked softly.
Rhys drew in a breath and bit her lip slightly, “Okay...” She stood and nodded, “Come on then.” She wrapped her arm around the girl’s shoulders. “We will find Lena, it’s alright.” She gave her a squeeze before she started walking forward.
“I can hear your heartbeat.” Alissa spoke, her voice trembled slightly. “Everyone’s hearts...I can hear them beating like a drum...like it is right next to my ears.”
Rhys gave a slow nod, “Just focus. Keep calm okay?” She gave a gentle smile.
“Everything alright?” Will approached he looked to Alissa and his eyes became worried.
“She’s quite alright, just feeling a little under the weather.” Rhys gave a soft smile, “I’m taking her up to her tent for the evening, I have some tea that will help calm that stomach of hers. Just a bit queasy. Wouldn’t yours feel that way if you’d been through what she has?” She asked as she looked to him.
“She looks pale.” Will noted, “We should take her to one of our medics.” He reached forward but Alissa flinched back.
Rhys moved and stood in front of her, “You don’t understand what she’s been through, Will.” Her voice was strong her brows tucked together. “I can help her, just allow me to try.” She nodded to Alissa and then they turned and walked off from Will whom stood with his arms crossed. She let out a long sigh as they made it to the tent that Lena and Rhys were sharing. Rhys pushed the flap to the side and stepped inside, “Lena?” She asked and glanced around. “Do you have any more emergency rations for Alissa? She’s...not feeling so well.” She pulled Alissa in front of her. “We still have two or three more days of travel before we make it to New Haven...I hope you have enough.”
