Rhys watched her carefully, she seemed distant, or as if she couldn’t possibly keep her attention on him. She was slow in her response as well. When she finally met his gaze he raised a brow in response to her question. He could tell that she wasn’t exactly comfortable. Or perhaps that was just her attitude toward learning another new material. He nodded as she replied that she had breakfast and that she could handle anything that he threw at her. “If that is the case.” He spoke as he closed a book that he had open before him. “Then we shall start with meditation.” He looked at the cover of the book that he was reading. It had nothing to do with magic at all, it was merely a history book of Balay. He’d found interesting information in it that didn’t quite match up to his world. He would have to do quite a bit of digging it seemed. Or...he would be forced to stay in this world until he was certain that this woman that sat across from him was indeed the queen that was from his time. She was weak...or possibly it was fear that kept her from becoming what she truly was. But again her words from the day before struck him, she couldn’t imagine hurting anyone. If she couldn’t imagine it, what caused her to change so drastically.
Rhys shook his head slightly, he had been staring to the princess silently, almost as if he was studying her. “Apologies.” He spoke as he stood he pulled a piece of chalk from the desk that was meant for the chalkboard that rest against the wall. “Meditation is the most important thing for a mage.” He spoke as he moved and began to draw a sigil upon the floor. “If you are injured, weak, tired...you name the ailment. Meditation can help you draw from the energies of the void.” He focused on the sigil as he drew it, it was a circle that was large enough for one person to sit within. He then drew a line and began drawing another. The runes within the circle were intricate and well practiced. He didn’t use a book to draw it as he had done this so many times before.
The mage looked to the princess then and gave a nod. “I will be able to guide you into meditation.” He offered a smile then. “This is where all mages begin. A guided process that will allow you to feel the true power that rests within you.” He looked to her coffee mug that she had been sipping from. “Coffee isn’t going to give you energy for magic, princess.” He offered before he turned and sat within one of the circles that he’d created. “Come, sit.” He spoke as he sat crosslegged within his circle. His hands upon his knees as he straightened his back. “Make yourself comfortable, just keep your body within the circle. That is what protects us from the evils of this world.” He spoke, as he gazed to her as he waited for her to come sit within the circle.

Rhys believed her fib, but that wasn't a surprise. No one ever called her out on such things as they were too afraid of what might happen if they accused the Princess of lying. When he stated that they would first begin with meditation she sighed internally. That sounded easy, relaxing evening, and she eagerly waited as he got up with the chalk in hand and began to draw the circles upon the ground.
When he finished and instructed her to sit within one of the circles she stepped over the lines, lifting her skirt just enough that it didn't smear the lines, and then sat in the same fashion he did. Her clothes were loose fitting and light, like the way they were yesterday, and so she tucked the cloth around her to keep herself somewhat modest as she sat before Rhys. "Evils of the world?" She questioned with a curious tone. "You mean like the creatures in your book?" She seemed a little unnerved with the prospect of possibly facing such things as the Dream Eaters.

Rhys looked to her as she questioned him of the evils that he spoke of. He took in a breath and offered a soft reassuring smile. “Yes, like the ones in my book...but...” He paused a moment before he shifted slightly. “There are much worse things in the world….things that will tear you apart from within your mind if you were to allow yourself to succumb to the void.” He drew in a breath and looked away from her. “I am not trying to frighten you. I am only simply stating what is there that you cannot see. Even the evil of a person can stretch to us like tentacles and control us….” He was speaking of the king, without actually saying it. Rhys had kept her eyes on her all the while to see what her reaction would be.
“Shall we?” He gave a soft smile. “Close your eyes. Relax. I will guide you into the void. Do not open your eyes until I tell you to.” He drew in a breath. “Focus on yourself, everything that you feel right now.” He took in even breaths. He then began to speak in the old language, his words were well practiced and flowed from his mouth like the water of a calm stream. The runes beneath them began to glow, he gained the runes upon the side of his face that marked him as one of the queen’s mages from his time. He took in quick breaths as he guided them into the void. Soon enough the air around them changed. It had a chill to it as a breeze whipped around them and pushed Rhys’ hair slightly into his eyes.
He opened his eyes, which glowed white like the rune upon his face. They sat within a strange version of the library. Books floated around them, they sat upon the ceiling. The world was morphed and bent. “Okay. You can open your eyes, princess.” He spoke as he stood and brushed his hair from his eyes. He reached forward to offer a hand and then he withdrew his hand as he remembered the rules. “Apologies.” He spoke. He pushed a book away that floated toward him and then he turned. “This, is the void.” He focused on her. “This is where magic originates. It is where you will draw your power from. Your magic here? It’s unlimited. Though, not without repercussions.” He smirked slightly. “Everything you do has some form of repercussion.” He turned and motioned for her to follow. “This world can be dangerous.” He spoke as he looked about. “Shadows reapers and the souls of those lost her lurk. Among other things. It is best to not travel far from your sigil. So long as you return to it, you may return from the void. If you get lost….” He nodded slightly, he didn’t have to say it. He looked about to a few floating orbs that glowed as he walked her out of the library. They emerged into a beautiful open rolling plains with thick lush green grass and a beautiful blue sky. “Distance is not the same in the void.” He spoke as he turned to her. “Can you feel your energy?” He asked as he stopped on top of one of the rolling hills to truly look to the princess.

Ivy followed his instructions, closing her eyes and trying to let herself find a center as she let the world around her fall away. It was a strange sensation. It was like she were caught in the state of consciousness where she wasn't awake but also not quite asleep. Her body felt light and yet the air felt electrified, like it did before a powerful thunderstorm. When he told her to open her eyes she hesitated a moment but eventually managed to summon up the courage to look around at the void that they had traveled to.
At first her mind couldn't make sense of what she was seeing. She hardly even noticed that he had reached out towards her before remembering the rules. As he explained the void that they were now in she glanced around as they got up and made their way through the strange space. She looked back to the circle, half afraid to let it leave her sight, but trusted Rhys to keep both of them safe while they explored a little.
She followed after him, listening to the calm way he explained everything, and as she finally noticed the glowing of his eyes and the runes on his face she couldn't help but stare at him for a moment. It was a rather impressive sight, and made her curious as to what the runes meant, but she would ask later. When he asked if she could feel her own energy she wrapped her arms around her mid-section, as if it suddenly grew chilly within the void even though it was quite warm. "I.. um.." She tried to get a sense of what he might be talking about she found it was getting hard to focus. "I don't.." she stated before she felt a sharp pain in her hands.
She held out her arms as thin black lines started to swirl etch into her skin, starting at her finger tips. In Rhys's time line the Queen had tattoos all over her hands, arms, and even along her chest that matched the markings crawling along her flesh now. In his time though that's all they were - tattoos, or so it was thought.
"Master Alister..?" She asked with a sense of panic in her voice she tried to wipe her hands as if she could stop the markings from spreading that way.

Rhys watched her with a smile upon his lips. “Just relax.” He spoke. “Allow the energy to flow through you.” He nodded. Though the next moment his eyes widened slightly. He watched as the black lines began to form on her skin. He shook his head as memories and visions of his own queen with the same markings appeared before his eyes. “Just breathe.” He spoke his voice stayed calm. He held his hands out. “Breathe.” His hands pressed onto her shoulders, he was breaking the most simple of rules that the king had given him. But in this moment, there was nothing else he could do. He had to stop this from happening. “Look at me.” His hands began to glow as he drew the darkness into his own being. He grit his teeth as the marks slowed. His brows quivered as he began speaking in the ancient language once again. The marks began to life from her skin then. Though while he was doing this the sky turned dark and a storm swirled above them. Wind began to swirl and whip around the two as he closed his eyes. He was placing a protection spell upon her. Though as his words came over his lips his nose began to trickle blood. This took quite a bit of power for him to guide her through the void and now for him to protect her.
Suddenly Rhys was slammed from the side as he uttered the last word of the spell. He skidded across the ground as the grass faded away into grey jagged rocks. “You think you can fool me?” A voice hissed. “Cheating time.” The creature that hovered over him was a skeleton like creature that wore ripped ragged robes. An hourglass hung around the creature’s neck, a scythe at its side. “Tsk tsk little mage.” The reaper swung at him then, aimed right for his head.
Rhys rolled just in time to avoid the attack. He held his hand to his side and a flaming sword appeared as he summoned it with his magic. “Now is not the time.” He snapped as he lunged forward. Flames whipped up around him as his sword made contact with the reaper’s scythe. Rhys growled as he spun and slashed again, this time he made contact. The reaper screeched and lunged forward with a flurry of attacks. Rhys rolled back and caught himself at the edge of a cliff. The void was a dangerous place if one drew attention. He had drawn all the attention in the world by stopping whatever dark magic had crawled over the princess’ skin. Rhys slashed forward and the reaper turned to dust. He gasped quickly as he rushed to the princess. “Are you alright?” He asked quickly. “Are you hurt?” He stared into her eyes. “This is not how I intended our trip to the void.” His voice trembled slightly. He had a gash on his right shoulder from the reaper that black smoke seemed to rise from. The reaper’s scythe was poisonous. “We have to calm down.” He nodded, “Your energy is drawing too much toward us.” He looked around to the other shadows that swirled about.
“She won’t change.” A soul appeared, a young woman. She stood before the two. “You can’t change the devil.” She spoke before she disappeared in a mist.
Rhys grit his teeth as he looked to the princess. “Come on.” He grabbed her hand then. “Keep up with me.” He ran forward as the ground beneath them trembled and shook. He jumped and pulled her up as the ground beneath them broke into huge pieces. “Don’t look down. Just keep moving.” He spoke as he rushed back toward the castle in the distance. In this moment he didn’t care if he was breaking the king’s rules. In this moment if he did not pull her from this they could both die. He’d never seen the void react in such a violent manner. They ran into the castle and he navigated the halls with ease. “Almost there.” He spoke over his shoulder as he rushed her forward. He gripped her shoulders as he placed her upon her sigil. He closed his eyes as he spoke once again in the ancient language before he was knocked back from her. He’d sent her out of the void back to safety.
**
Rhys sat with his hands upon his knees, his breaths quick as he remained in the void. Blood trickled from his nose as he grit his teeth. Then suddenly he broke free his eyes opened and he gasped as if he had been beneath water for a long while. “Princess?” He asked quickly as he got to his feet. “Are you alright?” He questioned as he looked her over for the markings. “Are you hurt?” He questioned his eyes locked on her.

Ivy was in a state of panic as the marks continued to crawl up her arms. As they seared their way into her flesh pain slowly crawled further up and she gave panicked screams until Rhys rushed over and gripped her shoulders. She didn't pull away from his touch and almost immediately she felt the pain starting to recede as the marks seemed to pull back and out of her flesh. As the last bit of the marks and the pain completely faded she gave a sigh of relief which was replaced with a scream of surprise as something large slammed into Rhys's side.
While Rhys fought with the creature Ivy backed away from them until her heel met with something and she stumbled backwards. Just before she fell onto her back something caught her and quickly pushed her back upright once more. "Keep him close." A voice whispered in her ear, the voice of a woman, but when Ivy turned to see who it was they were already gone.
The next thing she knew Rhys had appeared next to her once more and grabbed her hand to start hauling her back inside and to the safety of their circles. She didn't resist and as he set her inside the circle she reached out to try and grasp his robes just as he was blown back and she was forced back into the normal world.
The books and decorations in the immediate vicinity were blown back as she entered the world once more, sending her sprawling out on the ground. "Rhys?!" She called out in concern and held her breath as she didn't see him return until, what seemed like, several long moments later. When he gasped and then immediately rushed forward to inquire on her well being she felt a sense of relief wash over her as she reached out to grasp his forearm. Whether to steady herself or him she wasn't sure. "I'm fine.. I think." She said and did a quick mental check over her own body before giving a confirmation nod. "Are you alright? What happened? What was crawling on my skin? It felt like fire, and that monster.." she was rambling on at this point so many questions that flooded her mind that she didn't know how to contain them.

Rhys stared into the princess’ eyes his breaths were quick. He didn’t flinch away from her grasp. Which could have been a mistake if anyone were to see their interaction. He simply stared to her as she rambled on quickly. He looked over her after a moment and drew in a breath. “Just breathe.” He spoke and gave a calm nod. “I’m okay...I can’t truly tell you what happened in the void.” He thought that he may have an answer, but he needed to research the idea first. “I’ve never seen such aggression within the void...not like that...not provoked...I...” He pressed his lips together in a flat line. “Those lines that appeared on your skin...I’ve seen them before on someone else, but...I never knew quite how she came to have the lines, I always assumed it was a tattoo...but...I...will research...we will discovered what just happened...” He drew his brows together slightly.
“The monster was my own doing, I can tell you that much. I cast a spell of protection upon you so that nothing could cause you harm...it...will remain in effect for quite sometime...even outside of the void because the magic that I hold within the void is limitless...and I held nothing back. That is what called that monster, that was a reaper of time...” He searched her eyes. Rhys didn’t move though, he stood completely still. With his free hand he reached up and brushed the blood from his nose and looked to it on his hand. That was one of the few times he had ever had something attack him in the void. It was his doing for using such a huge burst of his magic, but still...it surprised him that a time reaper had come after him. “We don’t enter the void again….not until you are ready.” He spoke and gave her a gentle nod. “I apologize for how horribly that went...I um...I’ve never had such things happen...it should have been a good experience...a way to feel your magic before you master it...” He sighed as he looked her over.

When Rhys silenced her and began to explain she bit her bottom lip to try and prevent herself from throwing a whole list of additional questions at him and simply listened. He didn't know what happened but he had done what he could to protect her and she didn't have to go back, at least not yet. "A Rime Reaper?" She asked a bit confused. She had seen the beast but not gotten a good look at it. She also recalled the smoking wound he had received in his shoulder from it. "What about your arm? You were hit and I saw the wound.." She reached up and gently touched his shoulder where he had been struck.
"Why.. why did this happen? My mother.. she always said.." She was visibly upset by the events and even shook a little as she spoke. "Rhy... Master Alister.." She corrected himself. It wasn't proper to use first names with her instructors. "I think.." She jumped as another sensation started in her hands and began to crawl up her arms once more. This time is wasn't painful but rather felt like feathers, or maybe threads were being dragged along her arms. The same markings from before were etching themselves into her skin but this time instead of a charcoal black color they were a pure silvery white. They flowed and etched into her skin to leave beautiful markings, unlike the dark and ominous ones she held in the future.
"What.. what are these?" She asked as they ended at her elbows, glowing slightly in their brilliance, and then they quickly began to fade. It was like they simply absorbed into her skin and became invisible so that no markings, or traces of anything, were left behind.

Rhys watched her carefully. This was a lot to take in. He understood that fully. “Yes, a time reaper.” He replied. “I may have dabbled in time...I cast a protection spell but I also returned your body to what it was before the markings took ahold of you...so I...turned back time so to speak...that makes the reapers very angry. Time isn’t something that the gods want humans to bend. But it had to be done...I wasn’t going to let you get hurt...” His voice was firm as he spoke. She may be a monster in the future, but she wasn’t now and she didn’t deserve the pain that she was in...nor did she deserve to have the markings of a murderous monster from the future. Rhys winced slightly when she touched his shoulder. “I’m fine. It’s just a cut, nothing to be too concerned about.”
Rhys pressed his lips together as he straightened slightly and let out a long breath. “Your mother?” He questioned, his eyes curious. “What is it that she said?” He raised a brow slightly. He wanted to reach out and place a hand on her shoulder to sooth her. But he wouldn’t, not with what was at stake, he had to stay by her side and he couldn’t do that if he was dead. He watched then as she stared down to her hands as the markings began etching into her arms. His brows pulled together, what was this? It looked more like his own markings that he had upon the side of his face. The mark of a mage. Only the most powerful mages would carry such a mark. But was that what this was? It would make sense that it would show up when she tapped into her powers. Even going to the void would cause her energy to swell.
The mage drew in a breath as she questioned him once again. He didn’t have all the answers. Nor would he act as though he did. He stared to her arms as the markings began to disappear. “I would venture to say that you are much like myself.” He spoke his voice still calm. “Master mages bear markings like those that seem to glow, but yet they are invisible unless you call forth your magic.” He tilted his head slightly. “Though, I’m not entirely sure if that is what it is...again...I will have to do some reading and we will have to look into it. I don’t want to tell you something that is incorrect. Though...I may be onto something...” He gave a soft smile. “How remarkable if you are to be a master of the magic.” He smiled. “That means that you are incredibly powerful, it shows a lot of potential.” He then crossed his arms slightly, blood had soaked into his tunic, there was a slight rip in it from the reaper’s scythe. “Tell me….what were you going to say before?” He questioned then.

Ivy didn't feel like the markings were necessarily a good thing, but then again she had just been subjected to a couple disturbing moments and her opinion on the marks wasn't as positive as Rhys's. She was glad they faded away completely though. Explaining new marks like that to her father would have been rather difficult and would have resulted in further unpleasant consequences and events she didn't even want to entertain at the moment.
"My mother?" She asked as she had gotten distracted and lost her train of thought. "Oh, she, umm.. well she used to warn me that one day I would come across something I didn't understand. She said that if I allowed myself to get in too deep without trying to learn about it first then I would end up hurting myself." She shrugged. "It's a vague warning but always gave me the chills and seems rather fitting for this situation. I just.. dont know enough about these things."
She sighed and looked up to meet his gaze, but the sight of the blood soaking into his tunic caught her attention and drew her gaze away from his once more. "Master Alister, you're bleeding." She gestured to his shoulder and seemed to hold an expression of guilt. She felt like shew as responsible somehow, despite his reassurance. "Let me help.. or call the physician. It's better not to leave wounds neglected."

Rhys watched her as she spoke of her mother. He crossed his arms over his chest and gave a nod. He then smiled to her. “The void is where most begin.” He spoke. “Though, I do apologize, I did not think of the circumstances. You have not been around magic like most mages that I have taught. So you do not have the same understanding of the magic….” He sighed softly. What if what he just did set the ball rolling for her to become her future self? What if this was the true tipping point? He frowned as he thought this. If he was the cause of the war he wouldn’t be able to forgive himself. He watched her as her eyes tracked to his shoulder.
“Oh no. No need. I’m a mage, remember?” He smirked to her. “A battle mage at that.” He placed his hand over his shoulder and drew in a breath. He muttered a few words and a glow came from his hand as he healed his own wound. It was small enough that he was able to heal it. Large wounds were a problem for any mage to heal on their own person, no matter how powerful the mage. He took in a breath and pulled his hand away, a black mark was left on his shoulder from the reaper’s poison. He didn’t want to speak to her about that now. More or less he would feel terrible, but he could manage until it was out of his system.
“Alright...” He gazed up to the clock on the wall. “How about we get you something to eat?” It was half passed noon. “A meal would do you good. Then we can discuss how you want to move forward with your learning...we will take it slower...again...I’m sorry Princess...” He lowered his eyes away from her and let out a long breath. This was not what he planned for her at all.

"Don't apologize." She insisted after marveling for a moment as he healed his own wound in seconds. She could see how mages in battle would prove useful but the fact that he took the pain of a wound like that without flinching told her he was used to the presence of pain. That made her sad in a way and she almost felt as if she should try and console him somehow but she also knew he would find it to be unwarranted and unnecessary. "A meal sounds heavenly." She agreed and finally stepped away from him and let her hands drop down to her sides.
She had barely realized she had been holding onto him until she went to release him from her grip. "Never once, that I can remember, did I willingly or knowingly disobey my father, and now we've come into contact more than once in a very short period." She grew silence once more. "Perhaps it is I who owes you an apology. Also, I would like to offer you a sort of truce moving forward. Teach me as you would teach any other student, disregarding my title completely, and I shall speak nothing of it to my father." She wasn't sure why but she felt as though she needed to make that deal. Then there was the voice that had whispered to her in the void telling her to keep him close, and she wasn't sure just how close she needed to keep him so her options being open was a better strategy than setting parameters.
The doors and windows to the study leading outside were open to allow a warm breeze to enter. As the wind picked up the sound of a woman laughing, almost gloating in way, drifted softly through the room. It sounded like Ivy from the future but Ivy did not recognize it herself. "Who is that?" Ivy asked, genuinely confused.
"Long live the Queen.." the voice said barely above a whisper and then there was the sound of glass shattering as something hit the floor followed by the sound of impish voices cackling and the sound of feet scattering across the marble floor.

Rhys gazed into her eyes, he wouldn’t argue with her. She was the princess after all. If she said not to apologize. He wouldn’t. “A meal would be good.” He smiled to her. When she finally dropped her grip from him he looked to where she had held. He then looked to her as she seemed to realize that she was holding onto him. He raised his brows as she spoke. Disregard the king? He drew in a breath, “Princess, if I am to do such a thing and we were to get caught.” He swallowed slightly. He then shook his head. “Do not apologize for simply showing care.” He gave a soft laugh, “You were being human.” He smiled slightly. “If we are to disregard titles, please call me Rhys, I’m not much for a title in any sense. To be honest it makes me just about as uncomfortable as this outfit that your father told a maiden to dress me in...” He muttered and shook his head.
Though as Rhys heard the laughter a chill ran down his spine. He swallowed as he rushed forward to the window to catch a glimpse. His expression looked as though he saw a ghost. He spun around as something shattered, “Come with me.” He spoke as he moved swiftly through the library. “Don’t fall behind.” He looked about until he stopped before a statue that was knocked over. It was a statue of the king. It was broken into several pieces. He looked around to try to find who had done such a thing. He bit his lip slightly as he looked to the princess. “Perhaps we both need a break?” He looked a bit jittery. His eyes moved about looking for clues. He then looked to the broken statue once again. Long live the queen. A fitting statement as she stood before him...

Ivy was just as shaken up as he was. Her expression was tense and her body trembled slightly as she looked down to the shattered statue of the King at their feet. Someone was issuing threats now. This was a matter that needed to be brought to her father's attention. If someone or something was in the castle.. or was it even something they could combat? "Rhys.. I'm scared." She finally admitted. "Is someone saying they're going to harm my father?" She reached and grabbed the hem of his robes once more and held on as if he might slip away if she didn't have ahold of him somehow.
Was any of this real? It felt like a nightmare. Perhaps she was still in bed. The vivid and awful dream a product of drinking too much wine the night prior. She would not drink more than a single glass from now on if that was the case. "No, it was the wind, right? Plays tricks on the mind and we're both hungry and a tad bit tired. Let's get some lunch and then we'll come back and see about continuing the lesson." She didn't believe it was the wind but she knew she wanted out of the library and if the call of their mid-day meal was great enough to accomplish that then she would take that opportunity.
Turning to leave the library she pulled on his robes that she still held onto the hem of. She wasn't going to let go until she had to.

Rhys looked to her as she spoke. “There has to be a logical explanation...” He looked to her fingers that curled around the edge of his tunic. “No one would harm the king of Balay...” He spoke and shook his head. “I think you’re right, the wind and we are simply tired...we’ve been through a lot this morning...um...” He glanced to the statue again. It was clear that he too did not believe that excuse.
He didn’t budge from his spot until she tugged on the clothing on his arm. His eyes lifted to her once again as he followed her toward the exit of the library. He looked about, on high alert. What caused that? He heard the queen...he knew it. Was she watching them from the future? Did she find it amusing. Was she the cause of the attack in the void? How could she be? He shook the thought from his head. Just the wind. He told himself this over and over again. Rhys placed his hand over hers as they neared the door. “You have to let go. I don’t want you getting into trouble...” He nodded as he slipped from her grip. Rhys opened the door and bowed his head. “Princess.” He spoke as he followed her. He glanced about as he half expected something to jump from the shadows and attack him. He was silent all the way to the dining hall which was empty. Thankfully. He didn’t feel like entertaining the king. He hoped that the king stayed far away from the dining hall at this time of day. Rhys took his seat and let out a long breath as water was poured into a glass before him. “Thank you.” He nodded to the servant before he took a long drink. “I apologize for all this, princess.” He spoke in a soft tone. Was this the snowball of events? Was this the beginning of the end?
