Dr. Harleen Porter
Today would be a day to remember. Or a day that would be much better forgotten. Within the stone walls and the barred windows of Asylum lie some of the most unstable patients that a psychiatrist could find. Those that would kill just for the joy of it. Others that could see things that no one else could. Or even hear whispers in the dark. Riddick Asylum had gone through psychiatrist after psychiatrist time and time again. Each one either ended up admitted themselves or gave up on the patients within the walls. It was where some of the worst criminals were locked up to spend their sentence until the end of time. So no wonder many skilled doctors had given up on the place.
Heels clicked in through the marble floored lobby. A blonde haired woman with beautiful ocean blue eyes walked in. Her hair was pulled up into a messy bun, she wore thick framed glasses upon her face and she hugged a stack of notebooks and loose papers to her chest. She wore a white lab coat and beneath she wore black slacks and a button up blue blouse.
“Good morning Dr. Porter. You came again.” An officer sat at the front desk. He had a warm smile upon his lips, a thick grey mustache upon his upper lip. “I’m impressed with you each day you come back doctor.” He chuckled.
“Well someone has to help them.” Dr. Porter replied with a smile. She set her items down and pushed her glassed up to the bridge of her nose. “You don’t think I’m wasting my time do you?” She questioned curiously.
“Oh no, no not at all. I’m just impressed that you’ve made it almost a year here and you haven’t thrown in the towel. Every other doctor they get runs within the first few months.” He spoke as he stood and moved the wand over her body to look for any metal objects that may be used as a weapon.
“Perhaps some see them as helpless. But if I can reach just one of them...I’m doing my job.” She gave a gentle smile as she nodded to him.
“You’re a true hero doc.” The security guard smiled.
“Willie, I’m not a hero, just doing my job.” She shook her head as he buzzed her into the facility.
Dr. Porter’s day went as per usual. She spoke with several of the inmates in her office. Most didn’t want to talk to her at all. But some did. Others she couldn’t get much of a response out of at all. By the evening as she walked out to the lobby she pushed the door open only to find that a group of men stood with guns pointed at her. She dropped her notebooks to the ground as her hands raised quickly above her head. Her breathing quickened as she looked to the masked men. She could see a puddle of blood upon the marble flooring. “I’m a doctor.” She spoke. “I….”
“Yeah, yeah, we know you. Dr. Harleen Porter. Big shot psychiatrist.” One of the men spoke. “Listen doc.” He stepped forward and giggled. “I’ve got a patient of yours you might want to see.” The man stepped forward and pressed the cool barrel of the gun against the side of her temple. “He goes by Bloodwing.” He spoke as he looked at her through a black ski mask. “You know him. Right doc?” He watched as Harleen nodded her head quickly. “Good, good, good. I see we are on the same page then.” He gripped her shoulder and spun her around so that her back was against his chest. “You’re going to have a little chat with him. Just a chat.” He spoke into her ear as one of the other men buzzed the door back open. “Come along doctor. We haven’t got all day.” He spoke as he pushed her along. As she walked through the hallways her heart pounded within her chest.
“What are you going to do?” She asked quickly.
“Don’t you fret, doc. You do as I say you’ll be alright. You’ll see.” He spoke as he pushed her along. As they rounded a corner his gun quickly fired, the bullet sliced through the air and took out a guard. The poor guard didn’t even see the shot coming. Harleen trembled as she continued forward. “Good, keep going.” He led her down a hallway as if he knew this place like the back of his hand. He knew exactly where Bloodwing was. The man paused at the entrance to one of the wards. “You’ll go get him. Bring him to the meeting room down this hallway.” He pointed with his gun. “Got it doc? You wouldn’t want me to kill any more of your guards would you? You want me to kill some more?” He questioned quickly.
“No. No please. I understand.” She spoke quickly as her voice shook.
“Very good, doctor.” He snickered as he shoved her forward into the door. “Don’t you even think about ratting us out.” He nodded to her to continue on into the ward.
Harleen walked quickly her heels clicked along. The guards greeted her with a smile and she forced a smile upon her lips as she moved to the cell of the patient in question. “I need you to open 36 please.” She called out to the guards.
“36. You got it doc.” One of the guards spoke and the door buzzed open.
Harleen watched as the door opened before her and she was met with a hulking figure of a man. She looked to him as he stood up, “Good evening, Mr. Zeigler. It is time for your session.” She spoke with a collected and calm voice.
“This late in the evening?” The man growled as he looked to her. “You’re going to cut into my rec time doctor.” He spat the words angrily.
“I’ll grant you more rec time. Promise.” Harleen smiled back to him. “Come along then.” She looked to the guard that approached to assist her in transport. She walked from the ward and into the hallway that the masked men had been in before. There was no sign of them anywhere. She looked about almost nervously as they approached the interview room. “Thank you.” She spoke to the guard before she led Deathwing inside the interview room.
He moved and sat down heavily. “So what’s this about? Did that guy in 4 complain about me? Huh? He deserved what I did to him.” The man spoke in a gruff tone.
Harleen cleared her throat slightly as she sat down across from him. “No. Well. Would you like to tell me about it?” She looked to him and pulled her small notebook from her pocket and clicked her pen.
“Why? There’s nothing to tell. He deserved to have his fingers broken. Fuckin’ thief.” Deathwing snapped and crossed his arms. “Why the hell am I here then? What do you want?”
It was about that time that there was a single fire from a gun outside the door. Harleen closed her eyes as she drew in a breath. The door pushed open and a man in a gas mask stepped in. He chuckled as he looked to the surprised Deathwing. The masked man held something in his hand. He tossed it forward as a noxious green gas began to leak from it.
Harleen immediatley opened her eyes and backed up swiftly. “What are you doing?” She asked quickly. The smoke grenade had landed at Deathwing’s feet.
The masked man snickered as the man’s eyes began to bleed as the room filled with the thick fumes. “Sorry for the inconvenience doctor. You’re just a casualty I’m afraid.” The man giggled as he stepped to her and cupped her cheek. Blood was running from her nose as she began to cough and gasp for air. “Don’t worry, it’ll be over soon Dr. Porter.” He glanced over the Deathwing as the man fell to the ground convulsing. “See? Doesn’t take long at all.” He laughed from within the gas mask.
Harleen tried to grab the mask from him but he easily bat her away. “Why….are….you doing….this?” She choked out, blood dripped from her mouth as she collapsed into his grasp.
“Well for starters...he killed my partner. Can’t let that one go. But mostly for fun. Oh...and the money.” He chuckled as he dropped her to the floor.
Harleen lay on her back as she sucked in quick shallow breaths. The world around her was beginning to cave in. Her ears were ringing as blood began to leak from her ears as well. It was like a scene from a horror film. She tried to move but what little distance she made it toward the door didn’t matter. The world closed in around her, the room fell into silence. Her hand was outstretched toward the door to exit the interview room. Her body shuddered as the toxin ran through her system. Her breaths were almost non-existent. Alarms began to sound within the asylum….signaling a break in security. Perhaps someone had found one of the bodies? Or worse...the inmates were escaping their cells and causing a riot.
