“We need help! Quick…I…um…the…Duke…he…he’s hurt…and his daughter was attacked…please hurry!” Booker spoked into the phone, he stared to the three men on the ground. He’d ran passed the others that Eva killed. He swallowed hard as he looked to her. “H-How?” He asked. “Why did this happen?” He questioned.
Truth was, Mavis was effectively putting forth new laws for the city, laws that many of the criminals didn’t like. Especially Ainsley and his men. Just a week ago Ainsley had escaped from the prison, with no trace, his cellmate was gone too. This attack, there was no doubt it was done by him. Time screeched to a halt around them, a cold burst of air came into the room. “One of the most important rules to being a reaper…” Remi’s voice came as he appeared from flames. He looked to Booker whom stood frozen with his phone to his ear. He then stepped over to Eva and leaned down, he looked to the blood on Eva’s hands and then to her. “You know, none of this would have happened if she’d just reaped his soul, like she was supposed to do.” He spoke and shook his head. He reached forward, “Forgive me, Eva.” He reached into Skylar’s chest.
“Remi!” Lucille appeared and shoved him back, a burst of white came from her body. “We have all made mistakes, they are both learning.” She stood over Eva and Skylar, protecting them. “You know you made mistakes when you first became a reaper, Remi, don’t you remember Sammi?”
Remi stared down to Eva and Skylar, his eyes softened. He took in a slow breath. “Of course I remember her…” He whispered softly.
“Do you remember when I had to drag you away from her body? After the grand reaper before you reaped her? You couldn’t move. You cried for days. Family…loved ones…it isn’t easy, Remi, it doesn’t matter what…or who…you are.” Lucille shook her head. “No matter how old I become, or how long I’ve been here, I still remember the day that my love died…” Her voice was a whisper at that end. “This is a mistake, Remi. It isn’t anything that can’t be fixed.”
Remi gave a nod he pulled his scythe from the air and slammed it to the floor, the souls of the men floated up from their bodies and ended up in the respective places that their souls belonged to. He looked down to Skylar and grit his teeth. “Lucille?” He questioned.
“I’ve got it.” She spoke as she knelt down next to Skylar and Eva. She placed her hand over the spot that Eva had hers, she gave a warm smile. “Don’t worry.” She spoke softly and gave a gentle squeeze just before she allowed a white glow to form on her hand. It melted into Skylar’s body and eventually the light faded away. “That should help.” She gave Eva a gentle hug before she disappeared.
Remi stared to Mavis for a long moment before he looked to Eva. “We need to keep her in line, Eva. This can’t happen again, I don’t want the fates to bring their wrath down upon us.” With that he was gone. The cold faded away from the air and time came back to. Booker was still crying into the phone to the dispatcher.
Mavis slowly lifted his head, he held his hand to his head and looked to the blood before he looked around the room. His eyes fell on his daughter. “Skylar…” He gasped and jumped from his chair. The chair clattered to the floor as he knelt next to her. “What…” He looked to Eva, worry in his eyes.
Moments later Ayla came running into the room, she lugged a small emergency bag with her. “Mr. Greystoke….” She spoke as she carefully nudge him to the side. Ayla pulled on a pair of gloves as she pulled back Skylar’s clothing. It was soaked in Skylar’s blood. “How long ago was she stabbed, Eva?” She questioned as she pulled Skylar’s shirt up. A rough, deep, puncture wound was in her side, just below her ribs. Ayla pulled her stethoscope and held it to Skylar’s chest, listening for a moment. She moved it to the other side. She drew her brows together before she dug through her bag and pulled a large bore needle from her kit. She felt along Skylar’s collar bone, first intercostal space, second, and then she felt down to the next and stabbed the needle into Skylar’s chest. She pulled on the plunger of the syringe and it filled with blood.
Moments later the EMS crew came rushing in. Ayla looked up as the two came forward. “She may have a tension hemopneumothorax of her right lung, diminished breath sounds….” She held onto the syringe that was filled full of blood.
“Dr. Sarálonde, aren’t you supposed to be off?” The Paramedic gave a smile. “I’ve already been running with you all night.” She helped lift Skylar to the cot, she then slipped the syringe from Skylar’s chest carefully. The EMT pulled a needle and tied a tourniquet around Skylar’s arm. “What happened here, doc?”
“I was attacked.” Mavis spoke, his voice gruff.
Ayla turned to Mavis as the EMTs took Skylar from the room in a hurry, the machine was beeping rapidly from the pace of Skylar’s heart. Ayla flashed a light in Mavis’ eyes. “Who are they?” She asked as she looked to the masked men.
Mavis winced as Ayla checked over his head wound. “I’m not sure…” He shook his head. “He was angry, I can’t remember much…”
Ayla gave a slight nod, “Alright Mr. Greystoke, get to the hospital with Amara.” She spoke she then looked to Eva. “Come on, we need to go and keep up with Sky.” She grabbed Eva’s hand and pulled her quickly from the room. “Amara.” She paused, “Please get Mavis in to get a scan on his head.” She called in passing, “Skylar is headed to the emergency room right now.” She ran off, towing Eva with her. Ayla hopped into her car and then took off into the city, it didn’t take long for them to catch up to the ambulance that raced down the streets with its loud sirens and flashing lights. Ayla raced after the box that flew down the road. “Is this all happening because of the magic?” She asked after a moment. “Is that what is making Skylar’s life increasingly difficult? Or…was this just meant to happen?” She sighed slightly. “Skylar has always gotten herself into some form of trouble….the fight club…” She shook her head and chuckled. “She came over to my home several times after fights and I would have to look her over. She’s call after the fights and had Ren pick her up. Yet, she kept going….I never understood why…”
Ayla shook her head as they pulled into her parking space at the hospital. “Come on.” She jumped out and ran inside, keeping up with the EMTs that were delivering her.
“Dr. Sarálonde back so soon?” A woman’s voice asked, as she ran up beside the cot. “What do we have?” She asked, it was Dr. Knightley.
“26 year old female, stab wound to her right upper abdominal area, rough exit to the wound. Diminished breath sounds of her right lung. Dr. Sarálonde vented her chest on scene. Her bp is 80/palp and dropping, breaths 26, pulse 146.” The EMT chimed in as they pushed her into a trauma room.
Dr. Knightley gave a nod, “Okay, thank you.” She spoke as she gloved up. “I need a CT kit. Let’s go people, we don’t have much time, get me some O neg.” She called as she lifted Skylar’s shirt. She began rubbing iodine on her side. “Come on.” She spoke as she grasped a scalpel that a nurse handed her. She sliced into Skylar’s side. Dr. Knightley then grasped onto the spreaders that were handed to her next. She slipped the metal into the cut and then clicked the spreaders open. “Ayla vent her again.”
Ayla stepped forward and pulled on gloves. She grabbed a needle and felt the spaces once again before she stabbed the needle into Skylar’s chest and it filled with blood once more. “Alright.” Alya nodded.
Dr. Knightley took a tube from the nurse and then pushed it into the cut she spread apart. She slipped it between Skylar’s ribs and soon the tube filled with blood. She smiled and began hooking the chest tube up to the drainage container as the blood began to come from the wound. She then began a 14 gage iv and connected a bag of saline to it just as a nurse hooked up the blood bag to Skylar’s other arm. Dr. Knightley looked to the monitor then, listening to Skylar’s pulse, it had slowed since she placed the tube. Skylar’s breaths weren’t as shallow and fast now that her lung could expand into the pleural cavity. Dr. Knightley took her gloves off and gave a heavy sigh, she then looked to Ayla for a long moment. “Thank you for the assist.” She gave a smile.
Ayla gave a grin, “Of course.” She nodded and then stepped forward. She looked to Eva for a moment. “She’ll be alright.” She gave a nod. “Her lung collapsed…and blood filled the area around it, that’s why she passed out I think…” She looked over Skylar and wiped away some of the blood. “She put up a fight though, huh?” Ayla let out a soft laugh, “If he hadn’t stabbed her I bet she would have knocked him out.” She gave a smile and then sighed softly as she gripped Skylar’s hand. “Don’t give up on us, Sky.” She spoke softly. Her phone began to ring then. She took a step back and pulled it from her pocket. “Ren, hey…sorry…I’m at the hospital, Sky’s father got attacked and she stopped it, and Eva saved her…she’s got a pretty bad stab wound, but Dr. Knightley helped get her stable. She has a chest tube…” She blurted quickly. “I’ll be home soon babe, I love you.” She then hung up the phone. “I’m really sorry Eva…I have to work tonight…and I’ve been working for 6 nights straight…I need some rest…” She then hugged Eva for a long moment. “Call me if you need anything, you’re in very capable hands with Dr. Knightley.” She then released her. “Just call me, okay?” She spoke and brushed a bit of blood from Eva’s face. She then left the room.
Skylar’s eyes fluttered open moments later, she winced and glanced around the room, her eyes wide. “What….” Her eyes fell on Eva. “Eva…” She gasped.

Eva glanced up to Remi as he appeared. She knew he would. They defied Fate… and no matter the case… fate would have her way. Eva’s eyes glanced to Mavis and she let out a sigh. “I know… it has to be done” she whispered and then held Skylar closer. She leaned down and kissed her forehead as Lucille reached down to her. Soon they were gone – and the chaos of people began.
Eva stood up as Ayla ran into the room, her bag on hand. She moved to Skylar and went to work instantly, she was quick – and brilliant. Eva glanced to the bodies and sucked in a deep breath. A police officer stepped in and searched the bodies for ID. Another entered and waved Eva over. Slowly she stepped over and nodded.
“Can I get your ID ma’am?” the female officer questioned. Eva pulled her wallet out and handed her the ID. “Can you tell me exactly what happened here?” she spoke and pulled out a pad of paper.
“We were headed here for Breakfast, a good bit early” Eva spoke and swallowed deep. Her body was splattered with blood, her nose still trickling with her own blood. “We heard a clatter and rushed up stairs. Mavis was already passed out. I was stopped on the stairs.”
“How did you manage to get by?” The police officer questioned. “I – he pushed me down the stairs but he lost his step or something. He just.. fell over.. then I got up and rushed into the next room. Skylar was on the ground then and – and I “ she shuddered. She had to bring back the memories of her first kill. She knew she had to look innocent. “The sword on the wall.. and I..” she shook her head. “and he dropped his gun and I just pulled the trigger. I - I don’t remember it all to well” she shook her head.
“Okay Ms.Brewster, It’s okay. Here…” she handed the ID back after jotting down the details. “Don’t worry… everything is going to be okay. You were a hero today..” she smiled weakly. “Can I get your phone number?” she spoke. Eva jotted down the number and the officer stepped away.
Eva followed Ayla onto the ambulance and glanced to her. “No…This isn’t from that… those guys were going to kill Mavis and…” she shook her head. “Well… we stopped it” she whispered and then climbed out of the ambulance. Eva stepped to the side as everyone rushed around, she followed behind until they came to the Room.
“I’m sorry ma’am, please wait outside” a nurse spoke. The nurse was kind enough to at least allow Eva that.. Eva stood outside the room as the crowd moved into it. She crossed her arms and leaned against the wall. A nurse walked up then and waved her over.
“I heard what happened” she spoke and lead Eva into a room. She pulled a few things out. She dabbed at Eva’s nose and wiped away the blood. “You put a good fight out” she smiled and wiped a bit more blood away. “Here..” she gave Eva a few ibuprofen pills. “This might help a little” she handed her a bottled water and nodded. “They’re almost done in there.. come on” she led Eva back to the door.
“It is a dangerous family to be around, you know” The nurse spoke to Eva. “The greystoke family” she chuckled. “I went to school with Skylar, you know. When I recently found out that she was gay” she let out a soft sigh. “You’re a lucky girl.. but I guess.. you have to deal with this sort of thing, huh?” she blushed and then rubbed Eva’s arm slightly.
“I guess so…” Eva spoke to her and then let out a sigh. “Thank you..” then the nurse left. Eva stepped into the room as it emptied out. Eva glanced to Skylar and placed her hand on her cheek.
“You’re crazy” Eva whispered and shook her head. She leaned down and kissed her forehead. “I was worried… but then I remember that you’re Skylar” she chuckled and stroked her cheek. Her smiled faded slightly and she hid her gaze.
“I know you… wanted to stop that” she whispered. “But.. you got the paper. Your dad will suffer until … until” she shook her head. “You will have to fix this… or fate will make it worse for him.. it’s.. it’s not about you… babe” she whispered softly. Her eyes welled up with a few tears and then she let out a deep sigh. “I’m sure it wont be the last time we make a mistake…” she whispered and then sat down on the side of the bed, her hand stroking Skylar’s arm up and down, slowly…

“He can’t….” Skylar whispered, “He can’t die….” She shook her head. “I…he’s…” She tried, but she couldn’t hold back the tears. She let out a whimper.
“Sky…” Amara rushed into the room. “Eva. Thank the maker.” She hugged Eva a moment before she took Skylar’s hand into her own. “This is my fault…” She whispered. “I should have had more guards…security…I should have done something…”
“Amara….” Mavis came into the room, he had a bandage on his forehead. “This isn’t your fault. Those men were with Ainsley, we will continue to have problems throughout this city until we eradicate them. The laws that were just passed will help do just that.” He gave a gentle smile to Eva. “Thank you, Eva.” He gave her a gentle hug. “You saved both myself and my family, I am indebted to you.” He then stepped to Skylar and kissed her forehead. “I’m sorry Sky.” He looked over the devices and tubes coming from her body.
“Father….” Skylar whispered, tears rolling down her cheeks. “I’m sorry….” She reached up then with a trembling hand, the world stopped around her and an icy air settled. She reached her hand into his chest, her lip quivering. “I’m sorry…” She spoke again as she slipped his soul from his chest. “I’m sorry…” She muttered again as she released his soul into the flash of light. She watched as Mavis stood before her. He blinked his eyes a few times, his face twitched.
“Mavis?” Amara asked, “Honey?” She stepped to him as he stumbled slightly. “Mavis?” She asked as he leaned against the bed, pushing it slightly with his weight. He then collapsed onto the floor. What followed was pure chaos. “Doctor!!! Nurse!!!” Amara cried. “Help!!!” She knelt at his side. “Mavis!” She touched his face.
A team rushed into the room and in the next moments they had him up on a cot and he was rushed from the room. Skylar by this point was crying so hard she could barely breathe. Tears streamed down her cheeks like a river. She clenched both her fists shut as she tried to fight back the whimpers that forced over her lips. Her body trembled. The heart monitor beeped quickly.
“Miss Greystoke.” The nurse that helped clean up Eva spoke. “Hey, shh..” She drew her brows together. “You’re going to hurt yourself, Skylar.” She pulled a syringe and injected it into the line. “Just breathe for me.” The nurse spoke. Her name was Riley. She’d been a good friend of Skylar’s when they were younger, but once Skylar left for law school and she went into nursing, they hadn’t kept up with each other.
Skylar gripped onto Eva’s hand as her body shook with her sobs. “I’m sorry…” She whimpered, her eyes began to grow heavy, “I’m sorry…” She whispered again before she fell silent, her eyes slipped shut.
Riley bit her lip she looked up to the monitor as Skylar’s vitals began to even out. “There we go….” She spoke softly. “She would have ripped the tube from her chest with how hard she was crying…” She looked to Eva and gave a gentle smile. “If you need anything just call, okay?” She then stepped from the room.
Moments later Amara came into the room, she was a complete wreck. Her mascara was running down her face, “Th….” She sat down in a chair at the end of the bed. “They…couldn’t…” She stared at Skylar’s unconscious body, not blinking. “They couldn’t save Mavis….he bled…his brain bled…he had an aneurysm they said…he…” She whimpered. “I…” She swallowed hard and squeezed her eyes shut, “He’s gone….”

Eva looked to Mavis as he crumbled to the ground. She stood from the edge of the bed and stepped back slowly, towards the wall. The room became crowded again with nurses and he was rushed out of the room. Amara followed behind them – her voice calling out to him.
Eva glanced to Skylar… suddenly she could imagine herself standing the middle of Mavis’s office. Back home.. in their Guild Mansion. How Mavis was killed.. but it was Skylar who saw it. Yet again Skylar had witnessed the death of her father, yet this time it might have felt like maybe even she did it. Was that her destiny – Mavis could never be close to Skylar… either he was cold and distant.. or dead. Eva shut her eyes while the room continued with its chaos.
Then she wondered was it going to be like that for her too? She never knew her father, and even throughout all of this time she had yet to see him again. Was her father going to be absent forever, in every story? She opened her eyes and looked to the resting Skylar… Riley had been in and out by now.
Eva stepped to the bed and laced her finger’s into Skylar’s. Her head slowly to Amara as she entered, sobbing heavily. Eva slowly made her way over and wrapped her arms around Amara. “I’m sorry” she whispered and held her.
At first Amara wanted to push away, but then she slumped into Eva’s arms and buried her head into her shoulder. Her sobs muffled by the thick peacoat material. Eva pulled away and glanced to her. “I’m sorry…” she whispered and then placed her hand on Amara’s shoulder. A small wave of energy flowed from Eva, into Amara. In that moment Amara leaned back and let out a deep sigh. The magic would sooth her, allow her some comfort in this moment…
Eva stepped back and then sat in the spare chair. Time froze and then Lucille appeared. “You did well…” she whispered and leaned against the bed. “Things will get…easier.. I promise” she spoke and then looked to Amara… “It’s… a shame” she whispered and then glanced back. “but it happens to all of us.. eventually… we will live on.. past our loves one and… When you two are well I will take you to Domum and you can rest” she sniffed and then nodded. Lucille disappeared and time resumed.
Eva stepped out of the room and shut her eyes for a brief moment. There was a loud thunder in the distance, and then the lights flickered. Standing before her in the room was a figure, he wore a white cloak and grey tunic and pants under it. His hair was short and well groomed, his face had a neat trimmed beard. He smiled and crossed his arms.
Eva looked to him and then suddenly he was gone just as the lights flickered again. Eva looked around frantically. “D-Dad” she whispered and shook her head. She stepped around the corner and then a nurse bumped into her.
“Excuse me – sorry – “ she spoke and looked up to Eva. She smiled weakly and then rushed away. People were moving all around her. Where.. did he go? Eva made her way slowly back to the room, her thoughts running swiftly.

Skylar’s eyes fluttered open, she glanced around the room. Amara was curled up in a chair, she’d fallen asleep after the bit of energy Eva gifted her. She went to side up only to realize the amount of pain her body was in. She grit her teeth and looked to the tube that stuck from her side, she groaned and lay back in the bed. A rush of cold air filled the room, the ticking of the clock on the wall ceased. “I know how hard that must have been, Skylar.” Remi’s voice came. He stepped to the side of the bed and sat down, he gave a gentle smile. “Being a reaper is the hardest job…” He muttered, “I too had to reap the souls of my loved ones….” He then sighed and gave a smile, “At least, you have Eva, that is something to be thankful for, she is a god as well, you will not suffer the same fate as all of us, you will be able to grow with her, and in time when your time is up you two will move on together, I presume.” He looked over her injuries, “As fate would have it, your father is gone, however you put up a pretty good fight, I’m sure the fates are talking about you.” He chuckled. “I too fought for someone I loved once. You did the right thing in ending his life now, Skylar.” He waved his hand and an image appeared before her eyes.
It was Remi, he stood his hands held onto a beautiful woman’s hands, their lips pressed together. He was happy. He hugged her close. In the next image he was given the note by the fates. Remi rushed frantically and stepped in front of a speeding car, shoving her out of its tracks, saving her. In the next she had become ill. She’d begun to age rather quickly.
“I let her suffer, I was so selfish…I made her suffer just so that she would be alive…because I wouldn’t reap her soul…” He whispered softly. “I let her suffer like that, getting sicker, weaker….for two years, until she couldn’t even get out of bed…I had to do it…I couldn’t take it anymore…the pain I caused her…I caused it…it was much worse than just a simple death…”
Skylar relaxed into the bed more, she shut her eyes, “I’m sorry I didn’t listen, Remi…” She whispered.
“We all make mistakes….Lucille reminded me of that…it happens to all of us in the beginning, especially reapers. It is difficult to reap the soul of a loved one. But, if not reaped, more pain and suffering will come and it will be much, much worse…I assure you.” Remi then gave her hand a gentle squeeze. “I’ll see you in Domum when you’re healed up. Allow me to help you.” He placed his hand on her side, a red aura surrounded his hand, “That’ll speed you up a bit.” He gave a smile. “See you soon, Skylar Greystoke.” With that he burst into ashes and time resumed.
Skylar took in a gasp of air, she watched as blood leaked from her wound more quickly than it was before, she could breathe better. She looked up as Eva walked into the room. “Eva.” She spoke softly. “I’m sorry for all of this…” She whispered. “I was foolish…I put you and myself in danger….” She looked to her mother. “I made this much worse than it ever would have been…” She then looked back to Eva. “Thank you for saving us.” She winced slightly as pain raced about her body. She had a black eye from one of the hits that the man had gotten in on her. “Remi…did something…” She spoke softly. She felt hot, like fire.
Riley came into the room, a puzzled look on her face. “Skylar are you feeling alright?” She asked as she looked at her vitals, her pulse was racing once again.
Skylar looked to the nurse, “I’m…okay…” She furrowed her brows.
Riley stepped forward checking everything over. “You are really warm.” She spoke as she checked her temperature, she slipped the device along Skylar’s temple and looked to the temperature. “You have a fever.” She spoke and then left the room. Moments later she returned with a few pills and a glass of water. “Take these.” She gave a gentle smile.
Skylar reached out and took the pills and downed the water. She then relaxed once again. Skylar looked to Eva with tired eyes. “Why…did this have to happen?” She whispered.
Riley took in a breath and sighed softly, “If you need anything just call…” She spoke as she left the room.
Skylar looked to her as she left and then back to Eva. “We escape one nightmare and into another…” She shut her eyes and then sighed slightly, she then let out a soft laugh. “I wouldn’t change it though.” She gave Eva a soft smile. “Not unless I could just take all of that away and keep you.” She laughed softly and then winced. “I just want…the lake…ice skating…I want to experience that…you know? But….I want that everywhere…with you…” She then shook her head. “I’m sorry, Eva….” She felt as though she was rambling. Her temperature was beginning to lower by that point from the medication that Riley gave her.

There was an odd breeze in the room, the scent of freshly bloomed flowers wafted by. Eva turned her head towards the door… it was shut. Eva turned her head back and she felt a hand on her shoulder. A woman stood next to her.. she had long black hair that fell down the length of her back. She wore a green dress made of healthy vines and leaves. It slowly grew and shifted about as she stood, it was alive….
She smiled and then glanced to Skylar, who lay on the bed. “It can be hard” she whispered and then leaned down. She placed a hand on Skylar’s cheek and then kissed her forehead. “But you will prevail” she whispered and then leaned back. A green energy flowed from her lips and seeped into Skylar’s skin. It traveled through body like a growing vine, blossoming through her veins. The woman smiled and turned to Eva. She held her fragile hand in the air, her sleeve of vines and leaves moving around her forearm. With a snap of her fingers – the world began to change.
Around her people came in and out at a fast speed. Eva turned her head to the hallway – quickly people were pushing carts around, speeding by. She was moving time. Then it suddenly stopped. The woman grinned and held her hand to Skylar – helping her from the bed. “It is time” she spoke and then moved towards the door of the room. She opened it - in the frame of the door was an image. It appeared to be a huge floating world, castles and towers, waterfalls flowing over the edge of the rock. “Come..” she spoke and then stepped into the door.
Eva looked to Skylar, her hand reaching to hers. She leaned forward and kissed her briefly, and then led her into the door frame.
Eva gasped as they were pulled through. It felt like she was being squeezed through a tube – the pressure pushing them forward. They traveling in a stream, directly from the earth. Through space. Infront of them was the green woman, a good way ahead. Eva turned her head slightly – when suddenly she felt a piercing pain.
Eva gasped and gripped her stomach. A red figure was next to her, grinning as he held a pitchfork forward – stabbed into her stomach. Eva gripped the fork and shook her head. Her body began to flicker as she used her powers.
“NO!!” the woman in green shouted. Eva teleported and suddenly there was a huge explosion. The pressure of the slip stream was broken. Her power fluxed with the burst of energy, and suddenly she was gone. Eva landed in a field of green grass – the pitch fork still in her stomach. The devil. Who ever…. She didn’t get a good glimpse of his face..
She cried out and held the fork, blood trickling from her stomach. She rolled to the side and gripped the thick grass with her fingertips.
“Honey!” A woman shouted from afar. Eva’s vision began to blurr. Her eyes looked around – she lay in the field of a farm. Several horses… a few cows… a fence over was a glorious large farm… Eva saw two figures run up – shadows of darkness as the sun blinded her. Eva shook her head – her vision leaving her now. Her blood covering the green grass…
“Hang in there” a man spoke, his arms reaching under her…
Eva’s eyes slowly opened, a few hours later. The sun had set… she could smell food cooking from the kitchen. Slowly she looked around… her hands moved to her stomach.. they had removed her shirt, stitched her three holes and then wrapped her up. She groaned and slowly sat up. “Ugh” she placed her hand on her stomach.
“Sweetie” a women moved into the room, a hot cup of tea in her hand. “Relax..” she spoke and sat down next to her. She had long blonde hair that was in a messy bun. Her face was full of care, she was a mother for sure. “Here” she sat the tea down and moved the plate of dinner over. It was chicken, cornbread and some greens. “What’s your name?” she asked with a soft voice.
“Eva” she whispered and then took the tea. “T-thank you” she whispered and took a sip. She leaned her head back. Where was she? What.. happened?
“Do you know what happened?” she questioned. “You were on our field… our pitch fork in ya..” she tilted her head.
“I… I can’t remember” Eva lied and hid her gaze.
“It’s okay… you look like you got hit pretty bad on your head… do.. you remember who did this?”
“N..no” she whispered.
The woman leaned back and nodded. “It’s okay sweetie. Don’t stress, you are safe here. Eat… rest up.” She spoke and then got up. She stepped to the hallway, where her husband waited.
“She okay?” he whispered. Eva could hear them though…
“Yeah.. she’s awake and her vitals are leveling out. She went through some shock, beat pretty bad. She can’t seem to remember, I wonder if she blocked it out. Maybe she was running.. an abusive husband or something…” she whispered.
“Okay… We might have to clear out some room in the attic. There was rumors in the town that the Divisi were on the way. They wiped out Helmsville… she’s not from here, they would surely take her… I’ve got a stash of gold and food ready for them. We… give them what they want, and they will leave us alone” she whispered and then kissed her forehead. “I have to get back to work, everyone else needs dinner. Thank you baby” he whispered and headed down stairs.
A small girl peaked her head into the room. Eva turned her head and smiled weakly. The little girl stepped into the room shyly and moved to the bed. She had crazy blonde hair, just like her mom. “Are you okay?” she spoke softly. She was maybe 10, or so.
“I think so” Eva spoke softly and smiled. “Thanks to your family” she nodded her head.
“Daddy says are really lucky… the fork missed some stuff” she struggled with the last half of the sentence and then smiled.
“I am” she nodded. “Whats your name?” she spoke softly.
“Tyra” she sat on the chair that was next to the bed.
“Tyra, I’m Eva. It is nice to meet you” she smiled.
“Eva…” she smiled and then turned her head as there was a knock on the door.
“Tyra sweetie. Let Eva rest… we can hang out with her tomorrow” her mother smiled and waved Tyra out. Tyra stood and then smiled – nodding. “See you tomorrow”
“Good night Tyra” she smiled and then leaned back in the bed, groaning as her stomach throbbed in pain…

Skylar gripped onto Eva’s hand tightly. “No!” She screamed. As Eva flickered within her grip she lost her hold on Eva’s hand. “Eva!!” She screamed as she lunged forward at the demon before her. He chuckled deeply as she swung hard and caught his jaw against her knuckles. His head snapped to the side. He lunged for her and gripped her throat before he snickered.
“Release her!” The woman in green called.
The demon looked over his shoulder to her and smirked, “As you wish.” He spun and flung her into the rip of the slipstream.
Skylar screamed as she was ripped from the slipstream and tumbled wildly out of control. Skylar’s vision clouded as she suddenly slammed against a hard surface. She let out a cry and squeezed her eyes tightly shut. She grit her teeth and gasped for air as her lungs fought to pull in oxygen.
“Princess!!” A voice echoed through the darkness.
Skylar’s eyes fluttered, she could feel the heat of the sun on her body. She winced as she felt a hand on her arm.
“Princess? Are you alright?” The voice again.
Skylar’s vision began to clear as she looked up at the man above her. “What…” She still fought to breathe.
“Your horse reared up, something must have spooked him, I’ve never seen him do that before.” The man spoke as he carefully pulled her to her feet. Skylar looked around, she was in a training area of some sort. She looked down to her clothing, she wore leather riding boots and pants, a maroon tunic with ruffled white long sleeves. She blinked a few times. “Do you remember?” He asked and placed a hand on her shoulder. “Come on, let’s get you in. That’s enough riding for one day, huh?” He whistled and a huge black Clydesdale horse came trotting toward them. He pat the horses neck. “That a boy.” He pet the horse for a moment. “Princess.” He nodded to her. “Go on.” Skylar took a slow step forward she reached up to the side of the saddle and fit a foot in the stirrup before she climbed atop the horse. The horse breathed heavily and bounced its head. “Shhh.” The man patted the horse’s shoulder gently before he clicked his tongue and pulled the reins forward.
Skylar looked around to the world around her, beautiful homes. Skylar turned her head as they made their way into the streets, cobblestone paths led them through the buildings. Armored knights stepped up and were in formation, two in front and two behind. The bells of a church rang out through the city, the tone was beautiful and found its way to each and every home in the city it seemed. Skylar could see the mast of a ship at the ports as they made their way down a street that was next to a large cobblestone wall that protected the city. As they rounded the corner onto what seemed to be the main street Skylar looked to merchants that were selling meats, vegetables, and all sorts of goods. Skylar looked to a blacksmith that beat away on a hot sword that he had just taken out of the hot fires. Her eyes then fell upon the beautiful castle that sat upon a huge foothill. It had gorgeous white walls that shot up into the sky above, it was huge, with towers that surely more knights were within.
Skylar looked to the people on the streets around them, they bowed to her presence, Skylar gave a gentle smile and a nod of her head to the people of her city. As they climbed toward the castle the houses thinned out into steep cliffs that fell down toward the city. They eventually crossed a long bridge that led to the huge front gate of the castle. Skylar looked around to the knights and a few nobles that walked around within the walls. Once in the stables she climbed down from her horse and looked to the man that led her home. “How are you feeling princess?” He asked and gave a gentle smile. “That was a really hard fall.”
Skylar gave a gentle nod, “I feel well, sore, but well.”
“Dimitri.” A woman came forward, “Princess.” She then looked to the man. “What happened?” She asked, worry in her voice.
“The horse reared, it spooked…” The man, Dimitri spoke. He lowered his head and took a step back.
“Are you hurt?” The woman’s voice was full of concern. “The queen would have your head if you injured the princess, Dimitri.”
“It was not his fault.” Skylar spoke, “I am well.” Her voice was full of a different tone than the normal Skylar, she had a royal accent, her words were more pronounced.
“Let’s get you inside, princess. Not to worry I will take good care of you, I always have, haven’t I?” The woman gave a gentle smile.
Skylar was led away then into the castle. She looked about the beautiful marble flooring and the paintings upon the walls. It was absolutely gorgeous the construction of the place. She’d never seen anything else like it. Skylar was led through several halls and up a winding flight of stairs to her bedroom which was positioned in a tower that overlooked the beautiful city. She went to her balcony and stared out at the town. She staggered a bit and took in a quick breath as the knowledge of the Skylar of this world flooded her mind.
“Princess?” The woman asked as she took a step forward and placed her hand on her back. “What ails you?”
“My head.” She spoke softly.
The woman reached forward and brushed Skylar’s hair from her forehead. “Oh dear…” She spoke. “Let us get you a nice bath, and then we will get you off to bed, hm?” The woman rushed back into her room and left. She came back with two buckets of steaming water that she carried into the side room. The sound of the water pouring into the tub could be heard. The woman left again. Skylar sighed Willowsdale was the name of this place, this kingdom to be exact. Skylar took in a shaken breath, the was an event tomorrow. A ceremony to be exact. She was to be courted by royalty. It was a ceremony that was held for centuries.
“Eva…” She spoke softly. She grit her teeth as she thought of the pitch fork stabbing through Eva’s abdomen. “No…” She breathed.
The woman came back into the room and poured more water into the tub. “Come, come.” She gave a gentle smile. She helped loosen the corset that was around Skylar’s waist and helped her with her clothing before she set out a gown for her to sleep in. “Call for me if you need me dear.” She left the room then.
Skylar climbed into the water and let out a heavy sigh. She felt the bruise on her forehead. She also had a nice bruise on her ribs. She had fallen really hard. From the height of that horse, it wasn’t hard to believe. She bathed herself, thinking of Eva, worrying about her. Eventually she climbed from the tub and dried herself. She pulled on the long gown and looked to herself in the mirror. She had long flowing chocolate hair, her eyes were a crystal blue, just like before….before everything happened. She took in a breath as she headed to her bed. She lay down and shivered slightly. The night was cool as the air came in from the open balcony. The woman came back in with a pot full of hot water. She wrapped it up and placed it near Skylar’s feet before she closed the huge glass doors to the balcony. “Can’t have you catching a cold, princess. Tomorrow is a big day. Many events await you.” She smiled as she tucked the blankets in.
Skylar gave a nod. “Of course.” She spoke softly.
“Good night, princess.” She spoke as she set the candle down on the table beside the bed before she exited the room.
Skylar stared up at the ceiling for a long time before eventually, she slipped into a deep sleep, rocked by nightmares of the demon that stabbed Eva. She tossed and turned, she drew her brows together and whimpered slightly in her sleep. Though, eventually her dreams left her, allowing her to finally rest….

Eva finished her plate of food and then stared to the ceiling. The house creaked and cracked as the wind blew, and naturally with its age. She squeezed her eyes shut and replayed the scene over and over. It was like the time that the reaper killed her with his scythe. But this time… a pitchfork. Who was that thing? Why was he there? Was it a trap of some sort… and where…. Where is Skylar.
Eva took in a deep breath and let it go. In an instant she emerged from her body, in a wispy blue form. Eva looked to her sleeping body and then turned to the window. “Skylar” she whispered and held her hand out.
“You shouldn’t” a figure stood in the corner of the room, arms crossed. Eva turned her head and looked to it. “This world is a weak one… using magic will cause a lot of chaos” she stepped forward. “Your lover is here, safe and sound… for the sake of this place.. just.. get back in your body and get over it” she stepped forward. She had long black hair, pin straight. And golden eyes - with a shove, she pushed Eva’s spirit back into her body.
Eva gasped as she woke. Her eyes turned to the window – the sun was up. Who.. was that? She slowly moved to the edge of the bed and stood. She gripped her stomach and moved to the bedroom door. Suddenly there was a pounding on the door. “No – Gregory” the woman called as she emerged from her bedroom, running down the stairs.
Eva stumbled down the stairs and looked out the window. A crowd of men stood, 5 or 6. They were ugly as sin. Huge men in tattered clothes, leather garb on, some with metal attachments. Swords in their hands, they pounded again.
“Open this fukin’ door” the man spat. “Pay your tax or fukin’ dye” he finally kicked in the door. Gregory stepped forward, his arms full.
“I’ve- I’ve got it. Please, just take it and be on your way” he spoke and dropped the bags of gold down, the bags of food. He backed up, his arm shielding his wife. Tyla was at the top of the stairs just then. Eva turned her gaze and held her hand up – telling her to stop. Eva grit her teeth and glanced to the small table against the wall. She gripped the short letter opener – knife – and held it in her hand.
“Aye, you grovelin’ you dirty farm rat?” the man questioned and kicked the bag of gold. “This ain’t enuf” he spoke and then the 3 other men stepped in. “Hand ‘er over” the man waved to the woman.
“No.. please” Gregory shook his head.
Suddenly the giant man grabbed the woman by her hair and dragged her forward. The woman cried out and gripped the mans forearm, trying to fight against him. In that moment Tyla screamed out, in an instant she covered her mouth. The men glanced her way and then laughed. “Ohh, fresh meat to rip apart” the man hip thrusted and then laughed.
Eva grit her teeth and then stepped forward. “Let her go” Eva spoke clearly, looking to the men.
“Oh, lads, she think she’s a tough one. Whatchya got there darling? A dull opener?” he laughed, slapping his stomach. “Yeah you’d be a gud fuck too” he dropped the woman and then head towards Eva. Eva tilted her head and turned the blade in her finger tips. In a swift motion she drove the blade up his jaw, ripping it back out as he fell to the ground.
In an instant the men clattered forward, rushing Eva. She slipped to the side with ease, she drove her blade into one’s rib. She threw a chair towards the other man and then leaped forward. She locked her leg around the mans hips and drove the blade into his eye. The man fell to the ground on his back and she stood up from him. She grabbed her stomach and then turned. She was slammed against the wall – a huge blow from the remaining man. She slowly sat up and then her eyes shot towards Tyla. Another man rushed to her. Tyla screamed and rushed up the stairs.
“Come to me!” Eva shouted. Tyla stopped in her tracks and then shook her head. Eva grit her teeth and then teleported. She shoved her dagger into the back of the man’s neck and then pulled it out. The man that hit her, the very last one, rushed up the stairs now. Eva leaped into the air and gripped his helmet. She slammed him down, groaning loudly as her stitches ripped. She slammed the blade into his neck and then slowly stood. She gripped her stomach and pushed against her stitches, she was bleeding through her bandages.
“Holy – shit” the man spoke and scrambled up. “Ho- how?” he held his wife, Tyla rushed to her hands.
“Please..” Eva muttered and sat down on the chair. “I need to find Skylar” she spoke.
“The.. Princess?” the man spoke, confused.
“Y-yeah.”
“Were you like… her bodyguard or something?” the wife questioned.
“Something like that…” she spoke and then leaned back, fighting the pain that came from her stomach.
Tyla moved over to Eva and hugged her. “Thank you” the little girl whispered. Eva brought her hand to her back and kissed the top of her head.
“Yeah” Eva whispered. The two parents stood up and then looked to the men. “You will want to get rid of the bodies… loot them, and then bury them, burn them, whatever” she spoke and slowly stood. “If more men come, you tell them you paid them. Off they went..” she slowly made her way to the kitchen and poured herself a glass of water from the pitcher.
Gregory looked to his wife and then nodded. He began to drag the men outside. The wife stepped over and looked to Eva. “Tonight… an open celebration is being held at the kingdom. Skylar will be courted, the first of many balls. Until her hand is chosen… we can take you there.. it is the least we can do” she spoke and then placed a hand on Eva’s arm. “Thank you.. for saving our lives…” she whispered and then stepped away.

“Time to rise, slumbering Princess.” The woman from the night before spoke. Her name was Jolene; she’d been Skylar’s maid since she was born. She’d cared for her when she was a baby, when her mother, the queen, was busy with other matters. “You’ve a big day before you today.” Jolene threw back the curtains which let in the warm beams of sun over Skylar’s bed. Skylar opened her eyes slowly and rubbed the bruise on her head. “Let’s see.” Jolene brushed Skylar’s hair to the side and looked her over. “Come.” She helped the princess from the bed. “I’ve got to get you ready for brunch with your parents, and then there is the parade, tonight the dinner and masquerade ball.”
Skylar stood and lifted her arms as Jolene directed her. She pulled off her gown and pulled on a beautiful dress. It was red and black, the colors of her family crest. The sleeves hung down from her arms, flowing beautifully. She winced as Jolene started to lace up the corset. When the woman pulled tight at the strings she whimpered and buckled slightly. “Princess?” Jolene asked, worry in her voice, she loosened the corset. “I knew you were hurt…” She muttered as she felt along her ribs, Skylar gripped her hand when she reached the area that was bruised, her rib was fractured beneath her flesh. “I’ll be careful.” Jolene gave a nod as she went back to lacing up the corset. She pulled other areas tight, trying to keep the upper part as loose as possible.
Skylar winced as a tear rolled over her cheek. “I can’t do this.” She whispered.
Jolene sighed heavily as she moved Skylar in front of a mirror and sat her down. She began brushing through her hair. “You knew this time would come. You will be courted, just as your mother was courted. It is tradition, you’ve no choice in the matter, princess.”
Skylar shut her eyes and took in a small breath, she fell silent as Jolene began to style her hair. She didn’t speak the entire time as Jolene did her make-up and prepared her for the day. Once her tiara was set upon her head she stood slowly, “I only wish I was given a choice in the matter.” Skylar spoke as she left her quarters.
“Princess!” Jolene chased after her. “You’ve a choice.” She spoke as they descended the stairs.
Skylar stopped and looked to her, her brows drew together. “What choice do I have when I am held up to the men of other kingdoms like a meat bag? A trophy for their taking. What choice do I have?”
Jolene took in a slow breath, she looked away and lowered her head slightly, defeated. “You may help push for the one you wish to have your hand. It is ultimately the king and queen who will decide. So yes, you don’t really have a choice, but you may persuade them….princess, I can not imagine how you feel, nor can I give you the answer, but trust me, you can push for this.” She gave a nod.
Skylar took in a slow breath the sun that shone in through the stained glass window reflected off of her tiara. “Thank you, Jolene.” She gave a nod and turned down the stairs. She walked all the way to the dining hall where she entered and found her parents sitting at the table.
“Skylar.” Amara spoke with a smile on her lips.
“Come sit, Sky.” Mavis spoke, “We must discuss the day.”
Skylar stepped forward, her father sat at the head of the table. He wore his crown upon his head and his royal attire, red and black as well. They were all dressed for the parade. Amara wore a beautiful dress as well, her crown was gorgeous, the handy work of a true craftsman. Skylar sat down across from her mother and looked to her father. “Good morning.” She nodded her head.
Mavis reached his hand to hers and gave a gentle squeeze. “Don’t be nervous, Sky.” He gave a smile. “Your mother and I had to go through this process many years ago.” He had grey whiskers in his beard that Skylar couldn’t help but notice as he spoke. “It is tradition.” He nodded.
Skylar gave a nod as the food was set before them. Her father spoke a prayer before they began to eat. Skylar looked around the room, the knights at the doorway stood in attention. Guarding their king and queen. After brunch they were led outside to the carriage where her parents climbed upon the highest rung into chairs that looked much like a throne. Skylar sat one rung below. Music began to play from the band ahead of them. Cheering came from the city streets as they approached. The trumpets announced the arrival of the king and queen into the city. The streets were lined with people, both royals and peasants alike cheered on their king and queen. Willowsdale was a very well off kingdom, the people here loved their king. He did everything he could to supply for them. They didn’t have many living without homes. If they were not homed Mavis found a way to get a roof over their heads. He was one of the few kings that offered that. That took in people from outside his kingdom. Those that came to his throne room and asked for help, he gave assistance, when he could.
The parade took them through the city. Skylar’s eyes looked through the crowd, searching for Eva. Hoping to catch her eyes. “Smile, Skylar.” Amara spoke as she waved to her people. Skylar perked up and waved to the crowd, she forced a smile on her lips.
After the parade was finished Skylar was led back to her quarters where Jolene helped change her into her ball dress. It was a satin material of red and black, strapless, sleeveless. It would certainly attract attention. Skylar let out a cry again as Jolene tightened the corset. She could barely breathe, the break in her bone was weakened. She was led down the stairs and to the ball room where light music played. Her mother hugged her and kissed her cheek. “It’s time.” She gave a smile. “The first of many.” She nodded.
Mavis hugged her gently. “You look beautiful, honey.” He then stepped out onto the stage, the musicians stopped playing the crowd froze and turned to him. “My noble ladies and gentlemen I thank you for coming tonight.” He smiled the crowd clapped. “Tonight we have a few wonderful prospects for my daughter. You will be courting her from behind your mask, this is no simple task, I assure you.” He smirked, “I give you…” He turned and held his hand up. “My beautiful daughter, Princess Skylar Greystoke and my wife, the beautiful Queen Amara Greystoke.”
The crowd clapped as Skylar and her mother came out onto the stage. Skylar stepped down into the crowd as instructed by her father. The music began then. A man stepped up to her. He wore a raven mask and was dressed to the T. He offered her his hand and bowed. “May I have the first dance with you, my lady?” He asked. Skylar gave him a slight nod and took his hand, and then they were off. The music played as Skylar danced with this man, she was moved around to others for nearly an hour before she could break away. Her side was on fire, she couldn’t breathe.
She was held a glass of champagne by a man that wore a simple golden mask. “For you, Princess.” He bowed his head and offered a smile.
Skylar took in small breaths, “Thank you.” She bowed her head and took a sip. She needed air, she couldn’t breathe. Skylar broke away to the balcony as everyone began to chat about. She leaned against the railing and took in a breath.
“My lady.” A voice came from behind her.
Skylar turned her eyes to the voice as she took another sip of champagne. Her eyes fell upon the man, he wore a black mask with blue accents. She gave him a nod.
“You shouldn’t be outside, you’ll catch a cold.” He spoke, a smile on his lips. “Though, if this is what you want, why should I tell you otherwise?” He leaned against the balcony. “All of the others are out for your hand, to control you, you’re special, princess.” He watched her with his warm hazel eyes. “Control isn’t really something that a king should do to his queen.” He then stood, “When you’ve had enough air, I would like your hand in a dance, if you would allow it, princess. I’ll be waiting by the stage, we can dance front and center for the king and queen.” He flashed a smile, “If you’d like.” He then stepped away, without another word.
Skylar turned and stared down to the city below. The lights sparkled from the flickering flames. Skylar turned as she heard footsteps approaching. A hand slipped to her hip. “What are you doing out here, all alone princess? You don’t enjoy the party?” His voice spoke. She looked up to him, his eyes were familiar. He pulled her close and chuckled. “You’ll be mine, my kingdom has more to offer than any other here.” He stared into her eyes, “You’ll see, princess, it isn’t about what you want, it is all about what the king and queen want for their kingdom, for the future of Willowsdale.” He grinned a sinister grin as he pressed his body against hers, “I’ll enjoy you.” He whispered into her ear.
Skylar shoved against him, she drew her brows together. “My family will not allow someone as devilish as you to have my hand.”
He lunged forward and wrapped his arm around her again, “We’ll see.” He leaned down and forced a kiss upon her lips, he chuckled then before he shoved her and returned to the party.
Skylar gripped her side for a moment, she winced. She took in a slow breath before she stepped inside. “Princess.” The man with the black and blue mask spoke. He bowed deeply and offered her his hand. “I would be most honored to dance with you.” Skylar took a step forward and placed her hand in his.
“She’ll be dancing with me.” The sinister voice again, she was jerked to the side and to the front of the stage. Skylar leaned heavily against this man. He chuckled as he pushed her through the motions of the dance. Skylar’s eyes caught her father’s, he was watching closely as they danced. When the dance was over she took a few steps back from the man.
“Princess.” A voice from beside her. The man took her hand and pulled her gently into his arms. “Don’t worry.” He brushed a tear from her cheek. He gave a gentle smile, the man in the blue mask once more. They danced through the end of the tune, he was careful not to hurt her. “What happened to your side?” He questioned as they danced.
“Nothing.” Skylar responded. “I am alright.” She stared to him, he’d noticed. No one else had noticed.
The music slowed down then. “Ladies and gentlemen it is now time for you to enjoy some of the wonderful food that we have put together for you this evening.” Mavis spoke. The men and women clapped then and cheered as the waiters came out with food on trays held to the guests.
Skylar looked to the man in the blue and black mask for a moment, she gave a gentle smile and a nod as she slipped into the crowd once more.

Eva pondered for a moment as she held her glass to her lips. Skylar… she was a princess? Tonight was the night she would be courted? These themes and ideas were ones she had read in books, like the times of knights, swords and boards. No Mini Coopers, no cyborg magic robots… none of that….
Eva stood and made her way to the bathroom. She had slipped a kitchen knife into her hand as she did so. When she stood in the bathroom she stared into the mirror. She pulled her hair into a pony tail and then brought the knife to her hair - slicing a whole 10 inches or so right off. She then began to file away her hair, cutting it as best as she could. A moment passed and there was a knock on the door. The woman slowly opened it and glanced in. “Oh sweetie” she whispered. She stepped forward and took the knife from Eva’s hands. She dug around for a razor and then cut the back of her hair. She evened it up and then looked to Eva.
“What are you doing?” she questioned softly.
Eva glanced to her and then gave a sigh. “I have to do go undercover… they… I…”
“It’s okay. You don’t have to tell me what happened. You… are a good person, with a great heart. You saved us.. I wont ask questions… except. Are you posing as a boy?” she whispered.
Eva looked to her with a touch of shame. The woman chuckled and nodded. “Here…” she trimmed a bit more and then styled her hair. “Let me get something for you…” she skipped from the room. She came back a few minutes later with a long bit of cloth. She helped Eva bind her breasts down, and then handed her an outfit.
“You would look good in this. Get you that sort of out – badass look” she winked and handed her the clothes. Eva changed into it. It was black baggy pants, with a black tunic tucked it. Then over it was a chest piece that a X cross style belt on the chest. She clasped the two belts at her waist, and then tucked the pants into the boots, strapping them into place.
“Heres the finisher” The woman held the long red coat to her. Eva picked up the coat and slid it on. The shoulder pads were hard, but fit her perfectly. The bottom of the cloak came almost to her ankles, the sleeves just perfect..
“Wow.. where did you get this?” Eva questioned softly.
“It was my mothers, believe it or not. Back when the town was first populated she joined the militia, undercover as a man” she chuckled. “She wanted to help… it comes with a sword too.. you should take it. As a thank you… for saving us” she handed her the sheathed sword. The sheath was black, standard. Eva pulled the blade… it was an all red blade, the hilt resembled some kind of black dragon, it was gorgeous.
“Wow…” Eva whispered. “This… thank you..” she looked to her and then smiled.
“We will all go to the city, it would be best for the family to stick together… Plus.. to get away from here. I don’t want any trouble… get prepared, we will leave shortly. If we want to make it in time” she spoke and then reached forward, brushing a bit of Eva’s hair out of her eyes. “You look handsome” she smiled.
Eva looked into the mirror. Her hair came just to her chin, it was parted on one side, a bit of swoop action in her bangs. She lifted her head and then let out a sigh. She was muscular at least, she pulled out the sensitive man look…. It could pass.
Eva gripped the sword and slipped it on her back. When she stepped into the living room, she smiled to the crew. They stood with a few bags. “We have a carriage…” Gregory spoke. “Verona, why don’t you grab a few snacks for the road and…” he looked to Eva and smiled. “Whats your name, young sir?” he grinned.
“Oh I… I’m…”
Gregory chuckled and then nodded. “Yevon…”
“Wasn’t that pop-pop’s name?” Tyla spoke, smiling wide.
“Yes… it was, suited for a very honorable man..” Gregory smiled to Tyla. “Lets load up now” he waved her to the front door. Eva followed behind. Her magical skill caused her wound to heal up fast, it was only a slight annoyance, than it was true pain. She climbed into the back of the carriage. It wasn’t a very done up carriage, one of low stature actually.
The horses bounded off, they moved swiftly.
“So why are you dressed up like a boy?” The little girl questioned. “Tyla…” Verona shunned her.
“It’s okay. I’m dressed up like a boy because… well.. I have to warn the princess about a very dangerous Prince who is after her hand. So.. my plan is…” she pulled out a masquerade mask. “To dance with her, as only men dance with the Princess. I will tell her of this nasty plan I uncovered..”
“Is that why you were so wounded?” Verona asked, looking to Eva.
“Unfortunately.. I was caught..” she nodded.
“What did you do prior?” Verona questioned, looking out the small hole in the door.
“I was ranger for the Hand. I did his…. Spy work, should I say..” she shifted slightly.
“Hmm..”Verona nodded and then hummed softly..
3 hours passed and they arrived to the Kingdom. They got through the city gates with ease, and they parked the carriage. “Yevon” Verona spoke as they climbed out. “Thank you again. I am sure this is our goodbye” she spoke and then handed Eva a sack of coins.
“Farewell Verona… Tyla, Gregory. Be safe” she bowed her head. She pulled her mask onto her face and then turned towards the castle.
She came to the huge castle gates and made her way to the entrance. A man stood at the door. “Please, directly forward to the ballroom, the festivities will begin shortly” he smiled and waved his hands forward.
Eva walked through the huge hallway, a bit of swagger in her step. A few women turned their head and smiled, nodding their head to her. Or should it be…him.
As Eva came to the ballroom she looked about. She had made it just time – Mavis was introducing his wife and daughter. “Skylar” she whispered. She weaved through the crowd – but was stopped by a woman.
“Hello” she held her hand out. “Dance?” She questioned. Eva looked to her and then gave a sigh. She took the womans hand and lead her in the dance. “What is your name, sir?” she questioned. “Wouldn’t that ruin the point of a masquerade?” Eva replied, her voice deeper than usual. The woman chuckled and nodded. “That is true.. I am sure I will see you in the next ball” she chuckled as the song ended.
Eva moved away – her eyes looking for Skylar. Where… was she? Eva turned… air. Skylar always goes for air when ever shes annoyed. Eva stepped towards the balcony – where she saw her walking back. She was stolen in that moment… was this even the real Skylar? Was it her Skylar? She shook her head.
The next song passed and Eva squeezed in between people, she was quick to appear before Skylar. “My lady” she bowed her head. “Surely you grow tired of the dancing, but may I beg for a song?” she questioned – holding her hand out. When Skylar took her hand, they began to dance.
It was like any other time she danced with Skylar. Skylar moved swiftly, fluidly with grace. Eva matched her, leading the dance beautifully. She twirled her, and then rolled her into her arms. It was so familiar. It made her heart beat loudly in her chest. “There are… people here who would hurt you..” she spoke and then the song stopped. Her hand fell from Skylar’s side and hand. “Don’t let them” she smiled. “Until next time” she bowed her head just as she was pushed away by another Prince. Eva’s eyes watched her, until the time was right…
Eva couldn’t know if that was her Skylar. And even if it was… how would she manage to slip past the defenses. In order to protect Skylar she would need a ticket in. Something… her eyes watched Skylar as she moved, so uncomfortably. Her eyes… fixed on her…

Another dance. Skylar looked to this man before her, his soft features. A small smile curved up her lips as they danced, it was fun, fluid, he matched her every move. She thought back to the times that she danced with Eva. There are…people who would hurt you…don’t let them… Skylar’s eyes looked to this mystery man. She searched his eyes as she was pulled away by another prince. Her eyes scanned the crowd in her next dance. She stumbled as the prince changed direction, as she was not paying any attention to the dance.
“Can’t keep up?” He asked, his voice unamused. “You’re supposed to be well versed in dancing, princess.”
Skylar turned her eyes to him then, “I had something on my mind, my apologies.” She spun in his arms then and danced along with him, better than any partner he had ever had. At the end of the song Skylar looked up to the prince, a smirk on her lips. “Was that more to your liking? What you expected?” She mocked him in a way. Skylar was known to push back against the normal interaction, what was expected of her. She pulled from him then and found yet another hand offered to her. Skylar was growing tired. She searched the crowd for the man in the red coat. She danced, distracted as she searched. She drew her brows together.
The music drew to a close, the final dance of the evening. Mavis and Amara stood in the center of the floor, dancing about to the music gracefully. One of the knights, Sir Allister helped Skylar through the crowd of people and to the stage where he gave her a nod and a gentle smile. Mavis and Amara returned to the stage, the crowd looked to them awaiting their words. “I would like to thank all of you for coming out tonight.” Mavis spoke, a warm smile on his lips. His eyes looked over the crowd, “At this time, I would like everyone whom is not courting my daughter to kindly head into the dinner hall. I would like to get a closer look at the young men whom ask for my daughter’s hand.” He spoke. The crowd began to exit the room.
Skylar searched through the crowd, a smile curved up her lips when she saw the red coat, there was something familiar about this man. She couldn’t quite place it. Skylar stood on the stage as Mavis stepped down. She looked to her mother for a moment before her eyes locked on the man in red. She wanted to know more, to know who it was beneath the mask.
Mavis stepped up to the men, one by one he looked them over. “I was impressed with the dancing tonight, all of you seem to be very well prepared to suit my daughter.” He spoke as he walked the line of men. There were 16 in total. A high number of men to court a princess. Amara had 6 at the time of her courting. It was incredible to see such a large turnout. “I would like to see each and every one of you in a duel, against each other. I would like to know that I can trust you to protect my daughter. Tomorrow afternoon we will hold this challenge in the arena, we will cut half of you away. Each process that we go through will eliminate at least one of you from the running to have my daughter’s hand.” He stepped back up onto the stage. “Be prepared for tomorrow, it will be a test that most of you have not had to face. But tonight.” He paused and gave a grin. “We feast to celebrate.” He stepped up to his daughter on the stage he gave a smile. “You are all dismissed to the dining hall.” He spoke and waved his hand. “You looked like you were enjoying yourself a few times out there tonight.” He spoke after the men had left the room.
Skylar gave a nod, “Yes. There are a few with a good heart, though, there are a few that I do not trust father.”
Mavis rose his brows, “For what reason?” He questioned.
Amara took in a breath, “For the same that I did not trust some of the men whom courted me, some see it as overtaking a kingdom, as a prize, they are abusive and will abuse her. We must be careful in our decision, Mavis.” She spoke. “Come, let us eat.” She gave a smile and led Skylar into the dining hall. “Go, mingle with our guests.”
Skylar gave a nod, she grabbed a goblet of wine and sipped from it. “For you, princess.” The man in the black and blue mask held a plate to her. Skylar gave a gentle smile and took the plate of food that was assorted with fruit. “I trust you are having a fun evening?” He asked as he munched on his own food.
“Yes, of course.” Skylar responded with a smile on her lips. “Where is it that you are from?”
The man gave a soft chuckle. “But that defeats the fun.” He smiled, “Doesn’t it? You are to choose us not based on whom we are. At least, in the beginning. Surely after the duels tomorrow you will get a chance to meet us, to get to know us, for now, enjoy.” He gave a nod and stepped off.
Skylar was bounced from man to man, it was exhausting. Each and every turn she took someone wanted her attention. “Hey!” A familiar voice spoke. “Come on.” She felt a tug on her arm. She turned her eyes to see the back of a woman’s head, her hair was done up beautifully. The woman towed her away from the crowd and to the balcony. “Are you hanging in there alright Sky?” She turned around, Ayla.
Skylar gave a smile, “Yes, I’m well. Just overwhelmed. Thank you, Ayla.” She let out a sigh and leaned against the balcony.
Ayla let out a chuckle, “Of course, what good of a friend would I be if I didn’t rescue you from all of those knights in shining armor?” She grinned. “Take a rest for a minute. I’ll see you back inside.” She then slipped off.
Skylar turned and looked to the moon in the sky. A cool breeze brushed against her. She shivered slightly. She took another sip of her wine, where was Eva? She wondered. Was she dead? The stab to her abdomen by the pitch fork was horrible…she’d be lucky to be alive….

Eva was pushed away by the crowd, soon Mavis and Amara danced happily. When the room cleared out – the men stood before the king and queen, the Princess. Eva stood behind the row of men, her arms crossed as she looked to the few. They sneered, chuckled – looking to each other. Some with fond hearts, others with the face of ruthlessness. They would love to rip each other apart for the hand of the princess…
Eva stared to the Princess for a long moment, and then stepped away with the crew, walking to the dining room. She stood off to the side, near the wall, arms crossed as she studied the men. Was she really going to partake in this courting fest? She had to. It was the only way to get close to the Princess…
“Hey” One of the men walked over to her. Eva turned her head and nodded. “What do you think of fighting?” he questioned, holding a glass of wine.
“It’s barbaric… but.. a king must be able to fight. For honor” she nodded. The gentleman took a sip and then nodded.
“Feats of battle often follow through into life. To understand… to analyze, to work as a team… however. A man who can fight with strength, is a man who can lead a kingdom. That’s why the dumb brutes go down first” he chuckled. “I wish you the best of luck tomorrow” he bowed his head and then stepped away.
“You too, mate” Eva nodded and then looked for Skylar… she didn’t see her. Eva saw Ayla though. She grinned and then stepped forward, approaching Ayla.
“Hello, my lady” Eva bowed her head to Ayla.
Ayla smiled and nodded back. “I am not the Princess…” she spoke, chuckling.
“But you are the Princesses’s best friend, are you not?” Eva questioned, smiling back.
Ayla was surprised, but then chuckled. “That obvious?” she questioned, handing Eva a glass of wine.
“Everyone must have a friend…” she took a sip.
“You think so?” Ayla spoke, relaxing her stance as she stood before ‘Yevon’.
“If not our friends, our family, who do we live for? Who do we fight for? Our loved ones give us purpose. Without them, we are nothing” Eva spoke, sipping her wine.
Ayla smiled and nodded. “Go on” she held her drink up.
“Hm.. well… Not everyone might admit it but. We need people, we need friends, we need someone to rely on. There is a reason why people left to solitary go mental. It is a human instinct. To deny ourselves that, well…” Eva shrugged slightly.
“What do you think of this… courting business?” Ayla spoke, studying ‘him’. Eva.
“I think it too is silly. The fact that a Princess must marry royalty is pointless. Why do we offer freedom to everyone but the Princess? The person that will one rule over the people. It is only true luck that Mavis and Amara love each other so” Eva took another sip. “If I could have it my way, I would rid of the tradition.”
“But that would make it harder… for you” Ayla questioned, almost confused.
“Aye. I run in line so that I can promise to another human – that she will be taken care of. Tended to. Even if we never love, I will make sure she isn’t beaten by some abusive…” her eyes moved off to one of the brutes who wished her as a trophy. “I do it for her, and the kingdom. Those Kingdoms… across the sea who battle amongst themselves everyday… they are formed from an abusive King, and unhealthy Queen. Their relationship is like toxin, and it poisons the kingdom. It starts from the top…” Eva finally finished her wine and then nodded.
“You are very wise…” Ayla spoke and then smiled. “Well, sir clad in red. I hope you farewell, and that Skylar see’s you as I do..” she spoke and then nodded, stepping away to the crowd.
Eva turned her head then to see Skylar emerging. She watched the Prince’s swarm her, begging for her attention. Eva simply stood in place, back leaning against the wall now. She plucked a plate of grapes and watched, ready to strike if needed…

Skylar turned to one of the men her eyes staring into his, it was the man before, with the sinister voice. He grinned, “I’ll kill all of these sorry excuses for men.” He spoke as he stood close to her. Pinning her close to the wall. He chuckled as Skylar backed into the wall, nowhere to go. “Then I’ll take you.” He smirked before he stepped off.
Skylar let out a breath, she didn’t want to be caught alone with him. With her rib hurting like it did, if he hit her just right she wouldn’t be able to defend herself, especially with the corset constricting her. She was the mystery man in red then, her eyes locked on his and she gave a slight smile. She made to step to speak to him when another man stepped in her path. Skylar looked up to him with a disgruntled glare. “Princess.” He smiled. “I will fight for your honor tomorrow. I wish to lead this kingdom one day, at your side, as your father and mother have led this kingdom. It is the most successful kingdom around, not many can come close to this kingdom.” He smiled.
Skylar gave him a nod. “It is a great thing what they have done.” She looked then, she’d lost sight of the man in red. Skylar then was caught by the man in the black and blue mask.
“I’m not going to lie and say that I am the best fighter, as I am sure everyone in this room has done.” He spoke, “Honestly, I believe that such a charade is rather brutal, but I will do as the king wishes, as war does come upon kingdoms and it is needed in times of darkness. I would much rather court you with words.” He smiled.
Skylar bounced between men, she was exhausted. Mavis clinked his glass to silence everyone. “Ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for coming tonight. I look forward to seeing you at the arena tomorrow at high noon.” He grinned, “I bid you farewell for this evening.” He rose his glass. A few clapped, others cheered. It was a good time.
“Who is that in red?” Ayla asked as she came to Skylar’s side. “Do you know him?”
Skylar gave a smile and let out a chuckle. “I was wondering the same.”
“I spoke with him.” Ayla grinned. “He seems like one of the good guys.”
“Oh?” Skylar looked to her friend, intrigued. She then searched the room as everyone began to leave. “Yeah…I could see that.” Skylar then looked to her mother as she approached.
“Darling, come with me.” She led Skylar from the room. Skylar looked around, trying to find the mystery man in red. No luck. She wanted to ask, how he knew about the sinister man. How he knew someone was here to hurt her. “You did wonderfully tonight.” Amara spoke as they walked the halls. “You deserve a good rest, tomorrow will be another big day. Out of the 8 fighters that remain, your father and I will officially choose 4 to remain. Based on their performance. Your father and I would like your help, of course.” She smiled as they stood at the base of the stairs. “I’ll send Jolene to assist you to bed. Good night darling.” She kissed her forehead. “You were beautiful tonight.” Amara turned and walked off down the hallway, her heels clicked.
Skylar stood for a moment in silence before she climbed the stairs. She stepped to her balcony and looked down to the crowd as they left the castle. She tried to pick out any of the men she’d danced with, but more importantly the man in red. She then looked to the moon, “Eva…where are you…?” She whispered, worried. She had to sneak out, to find her. She had to get out somehow, there had to be a way.
Jolene came to her room then. “It’s going to get cold tonight, you best come in, princess.” She spoke as she pulled the gown and shuffled Skylar away from the balcony. “You’re always dreaming, aren’t you? You’ve done that since you were young.” She let out a chuckle. She loosened the corset and helped Skylar change into her gown before she tucked her away and tucked in another hot pot of water. “Good night princess.” She spoke as she left the room.
Skylar lay, staring at the ceiling. How could she get out? She had to find Eva…

Eva looked to Mavis, and then the crowd began to funnel out. She waited a long moment until finally leaving. She felt a shove from one of the brutes. Though she ignored him… he would get his… “Princes… right this way please” A guard spoke, holding his hand out to them. He led them through the hallways, and into their own personal rooms.
“Each door will be guarded by a knight. Please… do not do anything crazy… you are not permitted to leave your room unless to the bath. Good night gentleman” he nodded and then stepped away. Eva walked into her room and then closed the door behind her. She pulled the road coat off and set it down, her hand running over the material. Eva pulled the chest piece off and then untied the bind. She took in a deep breath and then let it out slowly. Her fingertips ran over the bloodied bandaging on her stomach. She let out a sigh and then took the bandage off.
She washed her wound, fingertips running over the three stitches. A diagonal row across her stomach. She stepped over to the bed and pulled at the sheet. She pulled the red blade from her back and slices a long strip. She then wrapped her wound once more and then fell onto the bed, topless. It felt good to let her chest breath… the bind was no fun.
“I hope… that is you Sky” she whispered. It would be unfortunate to go this far… but.. if that God? Said she was here.. then it had to be her. But maybe something happened, maybe there is 2 Skylars? She could never be completely sure. Regardless, she couldn’t go waltzing in. It would do no good. She would have to really do this…
The morning came swiftly. She rose just as the sun did. She stood over her chest piece and held her hand over it. She shut her eyes and focused deeply. Her hand glowed and the chest piece was burned. A white crest burned into the middle of the chest piece. It was a large raven, a mountain the background. “Yevon Landstar” she spoke softly. “Prince of the Northern Castle of Landstar, in the mountains.. small.. remote…” she looked into the mirror…
Eva bound herself and then pulled her tunic.. chest piece and coat on. She strapped her sword into place. She held the blade outward – looking to the gorgeous black dragon. The red blade… black etching into it. It was a gorgeous.. unique blade. She sheathed it and then turned for the door.
“Good morning, come come. Breakfast awaits at the arena. You will get an hour of practice, and then it all begins” the guard led Eva outside.
She followed – she climbed into the carriage that awaited her and it led to the arena just a few miles away. Eva stepped out and then made her way towards the entrance. She was led down to the sidelines, where tables were set up. Eva ate some eggs, bacon and toast… She watched the men spar with other guards, attack dummies.
She stood, arms crossed, studying them. Their footwork… their movement. “Your name?” A guard spoke, a clipboard in hand.
Eva turned and looked to him. “Yevon Landstar” she bowed.
“Landstar… the kingdom in the north, right?” he questioned.
Eva’s eyes grew big for a moment. There was a kingdom, truly? Landstar… that was her fathers name. Was he a King? She nodded.
“Good small Kingdom, I like those folk. Not many people know it, my brother went up to the wall a year ago..” he nodded and then stepped away.
Eva stepped to the center of the arena, as they were being corralled. The King and Queen were there, the Princess too surely. She stood in the back of the group, looking upward. The Arena stands were beginning to fill with people… this was a big event…

The next morning came quickly. Skylar was awoken by Jolene, the same as always, by drawing the curtains back. “Good morning, princess. Are you ready to cheer your men on today?” She asked as she readied a dress. Skylar stepped over to her and pulled on the white dress. She then looked down as Jolene tightened a dark red corset with black stitching on around her. She took in a deep breath just before Jolene cinched to corset down. Skylar let out a groan, “Whoever invented this thing can go to hell.” She muttered as she moved to sit for Jolene to do up her hair again.
Jolene let out a soft chuckle. “It isn’t the most comfortable contraption, is it?” She spoke as she brushed through her hair.
Skylar was soon upon a carriage with her parents, headed to the arena. People were gathered as she followed her father and mother into the center of the arena. Her father handed her a single dark red ribbon. A favor, to give to the knight of her choosing. Mavis led his wife and daughter to their thrones that were at the center of the field on the edge. “Ladies and Gentlemen.” The king called, his voice was perfect for announcements like this. “Today we are gathered to see these 16 men compete. At the end of the day today only 8 will remain allowed to court my daughter, after dinner tonight, merely four will remain.” The crowd cheered. “Men.” He turned to the competitors that had been corralled onto the field. He stepped into the arena and separated the men into 8 on each side. He then sectioned them off, picking their opponents for them. He then smiled as he stood before them. “My daughter will bestow a favor upon one of you.” He looked the men over, a few grinned, others looked to one another. “May her favor protect you in battle.” Mavis turned, “Skylar.” He gave a nod.
Skylar stepped down from the throne. She stepped to her father in the arena, playing with the silky ribbon. She looked to the men, her eyes fell upon the man in the red jacket. Should she bestow him with the favor? She looked down to the ribbon.
“Choose one, Skylar.” Mavis spoke and gave her a gentle nudge forward.
Skylar took a step and looked to the men, everyone had their eyes upon her. Skylar looked to the ribbon once more before she took a step forward. She stepped up to the man in red. She looked into the eyes of this man and seemed to freeze for a long moment. “I…” She reached forward and tied the favor upon Yevon’s sword hilt. Her eyes stared to her hands, Eva’s eyes looked much like this. Was it her mind playing tricks on her? It had to be. She swallowed and then placed her hand on his cheek. “I wish you well in this challenge that lies before you today. May this favor protect you and give you strength.” She leaned forward then and planted a quick kiss upon his lips. This was tradition. The princess gave a favor to her favorite knight and always gave a kiss for good luck. Skylar took a step back as the crowd roared to her decision, everyone cheered happily. A few of the men had a hateful sneer on their faces now. Jealous that Yevon had gotten the attention of the princess.
Skylar turned and returned to her throne then. Mavis smiled to the men. “She has made her decision. Fight with honor men. I will not tolerate any dirty fighting, that will directly disqualify you and you will be removed from my kingdom at once. You will fight one pair at a time.” He turned and smirked as he looked to Yevon, “You will be last, as my daughter has chosen you in her favor.” He then left to his throne. “Let the fights begin!” He called and the crowd cheered happily.
Skylar watched the fights as they played before her, the men clashing their swords and putting out their best fight. The man whom wore the black and blue mask was Prince Peter Asarathe, he was from a faraway kingdom that was very well put together, such as her kingdom. He won his fight. The man with the sinister voice was Prince Jasper Stone. Skylar stared in horror as he took out his opponent. A knight had to rush in and pull him off of the other knight. She prayed that her parents did not allow him to continue. Knowing Jasper he was always a horrible person, at least in the other worlds. Soon enough the other fights were over with. Skylar sat up in her seat, hopeful, she fidgeted with her hands slightly as she waited to see the final fight.
