Eva glanced over as Ayla spoke, and then Alden grew defensive. Eva gave a sigh and then watched as Alden stepped away. Ren lowered her head and then shook her head slightly. “Ayla – right?” she looked up to her and smiled. “The good guys never get to shine in the light like the bad ones… but we… we sacrifice so much. We sacrifice our humanity, our sanity. Those guys that have gone bad…. They were good once. But the things we are forced to do… it sinks into our skin and eats us alive. The guys who are bad are the ones who sacrificed it all, and can’t ever get it back…” she let out a sigh. “There’s only one way out of that life – and it’s death”
Ren then stood and then walked out of the room. She caught up with Alden and called out to him – “What was your rank?” she questioned as she came up to him.
Alden stopped and then glanced to her. “Corporal” his voice was stiff, like he was trying to prove something.
“Well.. Corporal… Civilians will never understand it like we do. It has been a battle since the beginning of our nation. We come back from war and are seen as monsters, can’t find a job – can’t sign a house. We hold that burden so they can live in their blissful world of sunshine and rainbows, right?” she chuckled and stopped before him. “I was a Colonel in the Marines, I joined at 18..” she chuckled. “It’s all I’ve ever known. I literally had been home 3 days when this shit broke out.. I was over seas in Orlais”
Alden smiled then and nodded. “Well.. it’s good to know someone understands…” he nodded to her. “Alright Colonel, good night” he then turned and headed away. Ren then walked back into the living room, where she curled up on the couch.
Eva stood then and stood by the door, her sword in hand.. her eyes glanced out the window that was slightly uncovered. Her eyes watched for headlights, signs of the dead… anything.
“So what are we dealing with?” Ren questioned, glancing over to Eva who stared out.
“The dead… they have no capability of thinking. They feast on flesh of anything that lives. And when we get bit… we die and turn into one of them – within hours usually. At most 2 or 3 days..” she glanced over and then sighed. “It spread so fast… suddenly everyone was a fucking zombie. They usually are rotting and bloody and nasty, you can tell they are not alive. They only die by a blow to the head – bullets, a knife, a sword. And they are attracted via rapid movement or loud sounds, sometimes scent” she then gave another sigh.
“We also have to look out for raiders. The people who gave up on trying to survive and instead steal from us. While we are distracted by the dead – they come storming in. Some hunt us like sport, others are just taking the easy road. “Those are the real people to be scared of… and god forbid we come across a town…” she shook her head then. “Their so called leaders are usually corrupt with power, as any man would be.. and that is our situation right now.”
“What do you mean?” Ren spoke, sitting up slightly – propping her head with her arm as she lay on the couch.
“We all just came from a civilization that has been here since the beginning of the end. Ayla…Skylar.. Alden, they all have known each other for a long time. Well this civilization’s leadership had become corrupt, entertaining the core crowd by hosting arenas that places humans against each other, or against zombies for sport. And god forbid they decide you’re wrong… long story short though…a while back they had it out against Skylars father, they thought they killed him but he escaped. After being essentially ran out the city – we are now in search for her father, all of us are being hunted by this city” she glanced down then to her sniper rifle…
Ren nodded “Not that zombies were a thing but this sort of situation is pretty frequent in the southern most area of Orlais, where there is no government and the entire place is one bombed out city to the next… everyone against everyone..” she nodded and then yawned. “Okay… well… let me know if you need me to take your spot.”
Andrew glanced over and shook his head. “No – I’ll take it tonight. You wont be taking any watches until you kill your first walker. It… is not the same as killing a live person.” He spoke and then reclined the lazy boy.
***
Eva woke in the morning from the lazy boy and stretched. “Good morning” she spoke as her eyes glanced over to Alden. In that moment she was handed oatmeal and a spoon. “Thanks” Eva took a few bites and glanced about the room..
Ren glanced to Skylar as she walked in and then nodded to her as Ayla gave an introduction. “Lieutenant… “ she smiled. “You will always be a Lieutenant, do not deny yourself those sacrifices… even if it didn’t turn out well” she smiled then. “Yes, I am coming… Eva saved me, and so I owe her that. Plus… I don’t have anything else to do” she held her hands out and then nodded.
“So we will be tight on space with the jeep, we will have to split into two vehicles… have you guy got any stored?” Eva questioned, looking to Ren.
Ren stood and walked over to the key rack. “All that’s on here is the porche, is a 2 door convertible” she glanced over and grabbed the keys. “We have a battery booster, I bet you I can get it jump started, it’s in the garage” she spoke and then walked towards the garage door. “I have a stash here, my dad sorta liked to collect” she opened a locked chest. In it was a collection of guns. She walked over to the porche’s trunk and unlocked it. With that she began to fill the trunk with the guns.
“Alright, Alden, Ayla – clean out the kitchen” Eva spoke and then helped Ren load the car.
Once they were all packed up Ren grinned and looked to the crowd. “So who’s riding with me?” she questioned. She stood now in her Marine uniform, a rifle strapped to her back – two pistols and three knifes of various sizes. She had the chest piece laid out on the floorboard of the car, it was stuffed with ammo, med supplies and other various things.
“Ayla?” Ren questioned, smiling. Ayla glanced to Ren for a long moment and then looked around.
“What better company than a fully trained Marine, Ayla? Go for it” Ren spoke and then smiled. “Alright, it’s settled… lets hit the road before your father gets too far ahead… or worse – we get caught.”

Ayla glanced to Eva for a moment, she gave a smile as she looked back to Ren. “You better keep be safe.” She said with a grin on her lips as she hopped into the Porsche.
Skylar glanced to Ayla for a moment and chuckled. “She’ll keep you safe.” She tapped the side of the car before she walked outside to the jeep. She looked to Eva for a moment, thinking of their time back in the world she came from. She seemed frozen for a moment until she shook her head slightly and climbed into the jeep.
“How’s your head?” Alden asked as he situated himself. “Can you hear any better?”
“It’s still foggy.” Skylar looked to him and searched his eyes, “I’m sorry about last night, I couldn’t hear and you scared me.” She turned forward then before she started the engine. “Stay close to us, alright?” She called to Ren before she pulled from the drive. Skylar watched down the road. They were at least 100 miles from Esrey. She hoped her father had enough supplies on such a short notice for such a large trip. Skylar slammed on the brakes as they crested a hill about thirty minutes into the journey. A horde of zombies rest before them on the highway. “Shit…” She muttered. “That sports car isn’t going to be able to just drive through them…” She watched as the zombies began coming toward them.
“Sky, we can’t just sit here!” Alden spoke as he gripped her shoulder. He hated when she did this. She was such a skilled fighter and yet, for some reason or another she would freeze. He’d saved her before, on more than one occasion. He’d spoken to her father about it when she was younger, it was some form of PTSD from something that happened to her when she was young. But, her father wouldn’t ever talk to him about it. And of course, Skylar wouldn’t talk about it, if she could even remember. “Lieutenant!” Alden jumped from the back of the jeep. He ripped her from the seat and shoved her into the back before he climbed into the driver’s seat. He spun the jeep around, “Let’s go!” He called as he pulled passed Ren and Ayla. He zoomed back down the old road and made a few turns getting them onto a back highway. Cars were littered along the sides. It had been cleared, recently possibly. Skylar’s father may have ran into the same problem here with the horde. “Sky, are you there?” He glanced over his shoulder.
Skylar looked to him and bit her lip slightly, “Y-yeah.” She muttered and then looked away. “I’m here.” She crossed her arms, embarrassed. Before the collapse her doctor had her on a medication for it. But the last time she’d seen any of that was at least 3 years ago.
Alden looked over to Eva and gave a nod. “We have about…” He looked down to the gage. “Well that isn’t going to help…” He grumbled. “You guys have canisters of gas I hope…” He pulled to the side of the roadway.
Ayla climbed out of the Porsche and came to the side of the jeep. “Are you guys alright? What happened?” She asked and looked to Skylar, she knew the answer.
Skylar looked to Ayla and then shook her head, “We’re good.” She gave a nod, “Just low on gas.”
“Not anymore.” Alden said as he pulled a canister from the back of the jeep. He poured it into the tank. “I’ll drive us the rest of the way to Esrey.” He spoke as he held the gas can.
Skylar bit her lip again and remained silent. She didn’t look to anyone.
Ayla looked behind the vehicles. “You better get the gas in quick, Alden.” She spoke, she could see dust from a vehicle in the distance. She jumped back into the Porsche.
Alden looked over his shoulder and shook the last bit from the can before he climbed back in. He turned the key and the engine roared to life. The vehicle in the distance was closing in. “Let’s go!” He called and floored the pedal. The wheels spun slightly before gaining traction. They took off then. “Skylar I need you to see what you can do with your rifle.”
“Okay.” Skylar turned around and pulled her rifle from the pile of weapons behind the seat. She lifted her rifle which had a small scope on it and used the bars of the jeep to steady her. As she looked through the scope the vehicle that was in the distance grew closer. It was one of the military Humvees. “They just don’t give up do they…?” Skylar spoke as she took in a slow deep breath. She moved her finger over the trigger and held her breath before she pulled the trigger. The sound of her silenced rifle clicked rapidly.
Alden glanced in the mirror and grinned as the truck abruptly turned and flipped onto its side. “Nice! That’s what I’m talking about! Good shot!” He grinned and chuckled.
Skylar furrowed her brows, another vehicle came from the dust behind the wrecked truck. It roared up toward them. She aimed in and pulled the trigger, but this time nothing happened. Skylar glanced forward to the Porsche that Ayla was in with Ren. She then grit her teeth as she looked back. She shot at the tires, trying anything to stop them. The truck rammed into the back of the jeep. “Speed up!!!” Skylar cried.
“I’m trying!” Alden pressed the pedal all the way against the floor.
Skylar gripped onto the body of the jeep, regaining her balance, she’d nearly fallen out from the blow. She raised up her rifle as a gunner came to the turret atop the vehicle. She pulled the trigger and the body slumped forward. Skylar gripped onto the body once again as they hit a pothole in the road. She gathered her balance and pulled her crossbow out. She aimed carefully and took in a breath, she held it just before she released the arrow. It sliced through the air and stuck through the grill of the vehicle. She then tied a cloth over another arrow and stuck it inside the gas canister. Skylar pulled her bow back and aimed in as they rushed forward, she released the string just before the vehicle rammed them again. Skylar lost her balance and fell to the side. She gripped onto the jeep as her body threatened to fall over, only to be pulled back up by someone. She didn’t get the chance to thank them before the sound of the vehicle exploding caught her attention.
Skylar watched for a long moment as the dust settled, no more vehicles. She turned and slumped into her seat. “Good aim Lieutenant.” Alden spoke a smile on his face. “You always pull through when we need it the most.” He gave a nod as he continued to drive. The rest of the drive was uneventful, the jeep returned to the front, leading Ren and Ayla along. Soon they began to near Esrey. Alden pulled the jeep off onto a side road and drove it up to a house. “It’s about a mile out, we should walk.” He gave a nod. “Just in case, you know?” He climbed out of the jeep.
Skylar jumped out as a zombie came forward. She lunged forward and sliced her dagger into the side of its skull. She then kicked it in its chest, sending it flying back. “To be even more safe. I’ll go.” She spoke. “We don’t want all of us getting hung up, not for something that is my battle…”
Ayla climbed from the Porsche, “Sky, you can’t go alone.” She spoke and shook her head.
Skylar looked to her and gave a soft smile. “Ayla, you’re safe with everyone here. If this city isn’t safe, if it isn’t a haven, I don’t want you or anyone else getting hurt. Give me an hour, I’ll be back, I promise.” She slung her crossbow over her shoulder and held her rifle in her hands. She then turned and headed toward Esrey.
“Alden….” Ayla spoke, “You aren’t just going to let her go are you?” She asked softly.
Alden took in a breath, “Look, Ayla, she’s right, it’s best that we don’t all get mixed up in this if it is a dangerous place to be in. We wait here. If she isn’t back in an hour, I’ll go get her myself.” He glanced to Skylar as she walked off down the road.

Ren glanced over to Ayla as they started the car and pulled out of the driveway. “So – You’re a doctor then huh?” she smiled and then looked forward as they pulled onto the road. “I’ve always admired people of the medical field… it’s probably one of the hardest and most demanding fields out there…. All the studying you have to do – and then these people are in your hands.. your mistake means their life” she let out a long drawn sigh and then smiled briefly. “I never have actually had a friend who was in the medical field, I mean – if you’ll allow me to call you my friend” she looked over and smiled.
Suddenly she slammed the breaks – the performance break pads were much better than she imagined. She instantly shot her arm out and placed it over Ayla’s chest, holding her back from lunging forward. “Sorry” she spoke quickly and then chuckled. She pulled up next to the jeep and stared out to the huge crowd of zombies. “Oh shit”
Eva stood up in the jeep and leaned against the roll bars. “Skylar – lets get rolling!” She shouted. The zombies had begun to turn and start for the trucks, as the Porsche rumbled happily. Eva dug in her bag quickly and pulled out a flair. She lit the flair and then picked up Skylar’s bow. She placed the end on the string and held it in her hand, she drew it back and then fired. The flair tumbled in the air and landed in the middle of the pile, a way’s down.
Eva then gripped the sides of the jeep as they turned around, the Porsche following. As they drove Ren sat back in her seat. When they pulled off Eva jumped from the jeep and lead Alden to the trunk, they had a few stored away. Eva jumped back in the jeep and pulled her own rifle out as they pulled out.
Ren pulled the Porsche out and shot out in front of the jeep. After shifting into 6th she pulled her hand gun from her thigh and handed it to Ayla. “Not sure if you’re a good shot, but just in case” she then pulled her other gun out.
Eva watched through her scope as the other truck flipped over – she then pulled her trigger a few times, shooting at the remaining truck. Eva was shoved to the side as the other truck came close. She turned and braced herself – her eyes watching the Porsche zoom forward. Eva reached over then and grabbed Skylar as she almost tumbled over – her hand pulling at the back of her shirt. Eva slumped back into the seat as then everything was over.
“Good one” Eva spoke and then pulled a bottle of water out from under the seat. She handed one to Eva and Alden. Andrew turned around and nodded at the crew, taking a water bottle as well.
Ren looked to Ayla briefly. “That Skylar is crazy as hell, badass” she spoke and then laughed. “We could have definitely used someone like that in our squad” she chuckled and then drove onward. Ren parked the Porsche next to the jeep as they pulled off. They both jumped out of the car and approached the crew.
Eva stood and glanced to Ayla and Ren as they approached. “Wait wait – “ Eva sighed. “I’m coming with you. Andrew.. Alden and Ren – that’s enough firepower to hand back. But Skylar you’re not going alone, and Alden – you’re still wounded” she spoke and then shifted her rifle and pulled her sniper from the jeep. “I’ll light a flair if shit goes wrong. But you don’t come for us… you leave. If that happens you guys have to leave subtle hints of where you are, as we follow. Take the jeep, leave the sportscar. That’s if it gets bad… If you see cars come, you hide – let it look like it got abandoned…1 flair means trouble, two flairs means it’s safe. They will be fired together in less than 30 seconds” she spoke and then looked to Ren. “You got this?”
“Copy that, Captain” Ren spoke and then gripped her gun. “Okay… Andrew – you watch the north face, I have the south. Ayla, you see movement you report it.” Ren spoke and then walked over to the Porsche..
Eva ran up to Skylar and followed her. “You think the road is the wisest place to walk?” Eva spoke and veered off slightly into the woods that followed the roads. “So – how do you want to do this? I can find a tall vantage point and take sniper from there, or we both can enter the city together. I grabbed these – they are short ranged, maybe we can find some better walkee’s.” she handed Skylar a walkey talkey. “7, sub 21” she spoke and then glanced to her. “If we split up, I can warn you of incoming vehicles this way.. I think that’s our best bet – do you agree?”

Skylar glanced to Eva as she came to her side. She gave a nod as they stepped into the woods. She looked to the radio and gave a nod. “The best way to go about this would be for you to hang back and get a vantage point.” They continued on for a moment as Skylar thought through her plan, “I’ll get inside, I’ll offer myself as a friendly outsider. Esrey is supposed to be a safe city. Though, my city is supposed to be safe as well….” She stopped and looked up the hill. There was a cabin all the way at the top that overlooked the valley that they were walking through. Esrey was at the center of the valley. “Come on.” She said as she snaked up through the trees. Skylar raised her rifle as they came to the front door of the cabin. She made eye contact with Eva as she moved around the outside of the cabin, she peered through a few of the windows, it appeared to be empty. Skylar paused at the front door, she took in a breath before she turned the knob and pushed inside. She moved quickly and silently forward, her military training showed here. She rounded a corner and peered into a room. A gun rest against a chair, the windows overlooked the valley. A hot cup of coffee still steamed as it sat on the windowsill. Someone was here.
Skylar searched through the room moving fast, she lifted the sniper rifle and popped the chamber open, it was loaded. Skylar looked to Eva a moment before she gave a nod and they moved from the room. She rounded a corner and the butt of a pistol collided with the side of her head. Skylar fell forward, her body fell limp.
“Don’t move! Put your gun down!” The man’s voice ordered. He aimed his gun right at Eva, his finger over the trigger. He kicked the rifle away from Skylar’s limp hands. “Who are you? What do you want?” He moved forward and ripped Eva’s gun from her hands. His pistol aimed at her the entire time. Suddenly he held his chest. He looked down, the tip of an arrow cut through the cotton of his shirt. Blood began to soak into the material. He choked slightly as he fell to his knees.
Skylar took in a breath, she lay on her back, her bow in her hands. She stood slowly. “Do you have any connection to Esrey?” She gripped the front of his shirt.
He smiled a bloody smile. “No, but I could be if I wanted. They just let a whole group of outsiders in just last night.”
Skylar stared at him for a moment, she knew it was her father’s group. She bit her lip before she drove her dagger into the side of his skull. She then looked to Eva. A deep bruise was forming on the side of her cheek where he’d hit her. “That had to be my father’s group.” She gave a nod. “This is a good vantage point.” She grabbed her rifle, she then looked to Eva for a long moment. “Thank you.” She spoke, she knew very well that this wasn’t a job for one person. “You can see the front gate from the perch. I’m going to get down there.” She gave a nod. Skylar watched Eva, stuck in her memories once again. She shook her head and then gave a shy smile before she turned and left the cabin.
Skylar made her way down into the valley, she took out a few zombies here and there before she finally made it to the road that led up to Esrey. As she came closer she could see the fences, Esrey was an old Military base back before the collapse. They would have food and water for years here. The fences were high and sturdy. “Stop right there!” A voice called from the top of a military Humvee. Skylar stopped in her tracks. “Raise your hands!” The next order came. Skylar set her rifle on the ground and lifted her hands into the air. She took in a shaken breath as she reminded her self that they just needed to make sure she wasn’t here to harm them. The gates opened and a man walked forward. Skylar looked to him, it was Booker. “State your purpose.” He spoke as he kicked her gun away.
“I am looking for my father.” She spoke, her eyes looking to him.
Booker took a step back. “Your father?” He asked as he stared into her eyes. “What is his name?”
Skylar looked to Booker for a moment, studying him. He wore normal clothing, he had a pistol on his hip. But other than that, he appeared to be completely normal. “My father’s name is Mavis Greystoke.” She responded.
Booker gave a nod. “Ah yes, he was here. His group came in late last night. They looked for refuge here and this morning when the sun was barely in the sky they left.”
Skylar took in a breath; they were too slow. “Do you have any idea where he may have gone?” She asked softly.
Booker shook his head, “No clue. Come on, let’s get inside.” He gripped her chin gently and looked to the bruise on the side of her head. “We have a doctor here that can have a look at you, make sure you’re alright.” He picked up her rifle. “You haven’t been bitten right?” He asked as he handed her the rifle.
“No I’m not going to turn into a biter on you.” She spoke.
“Good to hear. Dr. Knightley will have a good look over you, and after she is done there, I’ll show you where your father stayed, maybe you will find something that could help.” Booker nodded as he led her inside of the compound.
Skylar followed him silently as he led her into a building. She looked around as she listened to the various machines that beeped. “How do you have power?” She asked.
“Generators. The military was prepared for this sort of thing back in the day.” Booker spoke. “Your weapons.” He pointed to a crate. “Place them all in here.”
Skylar furrowed her brows and hesitated. “Why?” She asked.
“Because I won’t have you hurting our only doctor.” Booker stared into her eyes, “You understand?”
“Of course.” Skylar nodded as she set her rifle and bow in the box. She pulled her pistol from her thigh and then set her dagger in the box as well. “Alright.” She gave a nod.
Booker stepped forward and patted her down. “Can’t be too careful.” He spoke and then gave a nod. “Come on.” He turned and led her into a bright room.
Dr. Knightley sat at a desk doing paper work. She looked up and gave a gentle smile. “Booker, who is this?” She asked.
“She is the daughter of the leader of the group that came in last night.” He spoke. “I realize I never caught your name. I am Booker.” He gave a nod.
Skylar watched him a moment, “Skylar Greystoke.” She spoke and looked to Dr. Knightley.
“Come on then. Let’s get that cut on your head checked out huh?” Dr. Knightley stepped forward. She pulled on a pair of gloves and felt the bruise. Skylar winced and pulled away. “Come on.” She led her from the room and into a side room. The windows were open to this room. Eva would be able to see what was going on. Dr. Knightley gave a smile. “Alright.” She spoke as she cleaned the cut on the side of Skylar’s head. She then wrapped a blood pressure cuff around her arm and pumped it up. Next she listened to Skylar’s lungs. She rolled up Skylar’s sleeve and froze. “Oh…” She spoke as she looked to the wound. “You…did you know you’ve been bitten?”
Skylar felt a pit in her stomach as she looked to the wound. “It was over four days ago…I’m fine.” She looked to Dr. Knightley.
“That is impossible.” She spoke as she took a step back. She turned and pressed a button.
In the next moment, a few men with guns rushed into the room. Skylar lunged forward and fought back against them. She landed a strong jab on the jaw of one of the men and elbowed the other in the ribs before she made to escape from the room. One of the men pulled a Taser from his belt and jabbed it into her side. Skylar began convulsing, she grit her teeth and whimpered as he continued to hold it against her. After a minute he pulled it back and watched as she collapsed to the floor.

Eva stepped into the cabin and looked around for a moment. Suddenly then Skylar fell and hit the ground – Eva snapped her gun forward, pointed toward the man. Eva let the gun go as he took it, her hands moving upward into the air. “We don’t want any trouble” she spoke – but then the man was suddenly dead. Eva reached forward and took her guns back after his body slumped to the ground.
“Nice one” Eva smiled briefly and then stepped over to the window. Eva took the sniper and checked the bullets, looking over the weapon briefly. “Alright, I’ll stay here… put your radio on voice on command.. I want to hear everything” she pointed to the walkey on her hip.
Eva then set her radio on the window sill and sat down in the chair was positioned. Eva lifted the sniper rifle and looked down the scope – it was a perfect view into the town. She wondered then what this guy was camping out for…
“Be Safe” Eva spoke, glancing to her as she walked away. Eva then sat in the chair, the sniper resting against the window.. looking down the scope.
She moved the scope around – looking around the perimeter. She pulled away for a moment and glanced to the coffee table next to her. The man had drawn a map of the perimeter – an X and a big circle not too far. She stared to the map for a moment and then located that X with her scope…
It was a tree… the limbs were just perfect – easy to climb. One large limb came over a Semi Truck that was parked against the wall – as a barrier. It was a way in… that no one was guarding… She traced the area. There was one guard – he seemed to be nodding off in the tower. Her scope continued along the main building that seemed most guarded. To the far back she caught something – several propane tanks had been stacked.
Eva grinned then she saw Skylar walking into the city. She followed Skylar – she could hear the talking over the radio. She glanced from the scope.. and then back in. She watched as Booker lead her inside, to be checked out. “Oh shit” Eva muttered. Before they made it in – Eva quickly snapped the scope over to the propane tanks and fired 3 quick shots. The tank suddenly burst – the two others flew away and slammed into the building, and a semi truck – bursting into flames. It was a mighty explosion – a perfect diversion.
Eva snapped the scope back to the window – She watched as Skylar fell to the ground – she could hear the scuffling of boots… men were shouting – and most of all: The cries of Skylar as she was being shocked. Eva grit her teeth and squeezed her eyes – for just a brief second.
Suddenly she stood in the doorway of the room. The door swung open as the men came running out – rushing toward the explosion noise. Eva had gripped the Sniper Rifle with two hands and slammed the long barrel into the man’s head – like a baseball bat. Easily then she knee’d the other’s chest, pushing all of the air out of his lungs.
“Skylar!!!” Eva shouted and rushed in. Her eyes glanced to Dr.Knightley – who was beginning to panic. Eva gripped Skylar’s arm, and then grit her teeth – her hand yanked out and grabbed Dr.Knightley. Eva pulled the two – Dr.Knightley slightly resisting – out of the building.
“Skylar, are you with me?” she shouted. The entire building was on fire now – people were running in all directions now. Eva kept running forward – dragging Dr. Knightley out through the front gate. She ran to the Humvee and opened the door.. the keys were still in the ignition. “In!” She shouted. She helped Skylar into the passenger seat. Eva then drew her gun and pointed it at Dr.Knightley “Get in the car” she huffed.
“No – you – you’ve murdered my people!” She shouted to Eva.
“I didn’t kill anyone, no one is hurt, just panicking. But you’re going to get in the car!”
“Why?!” Dr.Knightley shouted.
“I – I don’t know!” she paused for a moment. Why did she grab Dr.Knightley. “I think I know you… It doesn’t matter – get in, let’s go. I’m your only way you’re going to live” she spoke and then looked to the hill. A huge horde of zombies were coming their way.
“You’re a doctor. Skylar is the cure to this shit – get in the car!”
Finally Dr.Knightley climbed into the back and held on as Eva started the Humvee and shot forward down the road… The Humvee bounced and jumped as she gunned it down the road. Eva fired off 2 flairs as she drove. Safe.. sorta. It was a minute later that the Humvee came bounding toward the crew. “Don’t shoot!” Eva stood as the car came to a stop.
Ren lowered her gun and approached. “What’s the news?”
“The news is – We got to get going. That horde is on it’s way, and those people are going to be pretty pissed with me. Skylar, you want to drive the hum? Lead the way, I don’t know where your father is headed, but we need to catch up. We will have two cities on our tails now…” she jumped out of the drivers seat. Her eyes glanced to Dr.Knightley, who sat with her arms crossed now – staring to the people…

The shocks ceased and Skylar lay on the floor on her side, curled into a ball from the convulsions. Her memories flew back to the first world the other Skylar to her memories of the collar that shocked her with each use of magic. Her entire body shuddered as she made it to her hands and knees. One of the men had his hand gripping into the material of her shirt, holding her still. She couldn’t hear what they were saying, everything was a confusing jumbled up mess. She blinked and then watched as one of the men fell before her, a cut on the side of his head from the barrel of the sniper rifle. Skylar’s eyes caught Dr. Knightley’s eyes, she looked to be full on in a panic. Skylar’s eyes moved to the other man as he fell to the floor, she looked to Eva then as she screamed out her name. Skylar leaned against Eva as she jerked her up quickly, her vision faded in and out for the first few steps and then she regained her bearings on things. “I’m with you.” Skylar spoke, her voice small. She could feel the heat of the fire against their back as she exited the building. Skylar glanced behind them as the flames began to engulf the structure.
Once they ran through the gates at the front of the complex Skylar pulled at the door handle to the van. She gave a nod to Eva as she helped her inside. She leaned her head back and flipped down the visor mirror. She leaned up and looked to her shoulder, right along her clavicle. She winced as she pulled the spurs from the Taser gun from her skin, it stung as it came out. She tossed the metal pieces onto the floor and grit her teeth as they were now bouncing down the highway. “Thanks Eva…” She spoke softly as they drove along. The rest of the ride had been filled with silence. Dr. Knightley sat in the back, her eyes glancing between the two.
When they arrived, Skylar climbed out and made her way around to the driver’s side where Eva and the others stood. “I have an idea, it’s a stretch, but I’ve heard of a place pretty far north of here, they are supposed to have protection. When the world first crashed, they were our extraction point for medical, back when the choppers still had fuel. My father may have gone there; we can look for signs along the way. Their leader at Esrey told me that he’d been there…” She bit her lip, “If it wasn’t for this…” She rolled up her sleeve and looked to her arm. “I can’t take point on anything…”
“You’re right.” Alden spoke, “They viewed you as a threat. Just as we would. Just as Andrew wanted to shoot you when Ayla first found the bite.” He looked to Dr. Knightley whom had a defensive stance. “Who’s this?”
“My name is Dr. Knightley.” Her voice was irritated. “I didn’t want to come, and now I am forced to be here because I guarantee Esrey will view me as a traitor.” She continued to hold her arms crossed.
Skylar looked to her, “Eva was right, you would have died if we left you. The horde was headed toward the city.”
“We’ve handled them before.” Dr. Knightley spoke.
Ayla stepped forward and placed her hand gently on Dr. Knightley’s shoulder. “Hey, these people are my friends, I’m not a doctor…but I was going to medical school, I was in my fellowship. They’ve kept me safe, they will do the same for you.” She gave a nod. “Skylar may be the cure to this thing. Don’t you want to see that through?”
Dr. Knightley loosened slightly as she looked at Ayla. A moment of silence passed before she gave a nod, “How do you know she won’t change?” She looked to Skylar.
“It’s been four days, usually it begins within 4 hours, 24 hours at the maximum. She had the chills and the feverish tone, she went through the phase where she was sweating bullets and in and out of consciousness. But, she made it through the night, and then she has made it three days passed that. Even if she turns at a slower rate, that’s something, right? It is a step toward a cure.”
Dr. Knightley stepped forward to Skylar, “Let me see.” She spoke and carefully held Skylar’s wrist. She pulled her shirt back once more and examined the bite that was on her arm. “This bite looks no older than an hour, it’s fresh…but…” She flipped her arm over a few times, looking closely. She then looked up to Skylar. “The medical outpost, were you speaking of Cambridge?” She questioned as she released Skylar’s hand.
Skylar gave a nod, “Yes…I…”
“We can talk later, we need to get out of here.” Alden spoke as he jumped into the jeep. “Let’s go guys.” He turned the key and the engine rumbled on. The tail end of the horde was headed right their way, it must have followed the sound of the Humvee.
“Get in.” Skylar spoke to Dr. Knightley as she climbed into the Humvee. She turned the key as the others ran to their vehicles, Ayla jumped into Porsche as its engine rumbled happily to life and they were off. Skylar drove down the highway. It was a trip she’d made several times after the choppers were out of fuel. They needed supplies, so they would meet a team from Cambridge halfway. Though, halfway was a good 6-hour drive. It took the whole day to do a round trip. “What do you know about Cambridge?” Skylar asked, she glanced to Dr. Knightley before she looked back to the road.
“We make medical runs with them. The last run we made was nearly two months ago, we haven’t heard from them…” Dr. Knightley spoke softly. “Tyrin, she was my medical assistant before she got her doctorate, she worked there…I just hope our radios went dead. I hope that they are okay…”
Skylar bit her lip slightly. “Worst case scenario, we will be prepared for them not to be okay.” She took in a breath, “What do you think of this? The bite?” She questioned.
Dr. Knightley furrowed her brows slightly, “It’s quite odd, I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s as if you were just bitten, but if everyone agrees it was over 4 days ago, then that must be the case. I can’t argue it. When we get to Cambridge they still have all the lab equipment, they have power to run scans and test blood. If I can get a look at your blood under a microscope, that may be the key…but we won’t know until we are there.”
“What do you think you’ll find?” Skylar questioned, curious.
“Honestly, I’m not sure. Maybe you have stronger white blood cells, and they are keeping the infection at bay.” Dr. Knightley shook her head. “I know Tyrin has been working on a cure, but last we spoke she hadn’t been successful.”
Skylar gave a nod, “Hopefully…whatever has happened to me can help.” She drove on. They crested a hill to overlook a huge city, buildings were leaning against other buildings. In the beginning, the military bombed huge cities after evacuations, trying to kill the zombies in large numbers. “I still can’t get used to the world like this…” She whispered as she looked over the broken city.
“It’s hard.” Dr. Knightley spoke. “We took the highway around the outside of the city, it’s the next exit. It should still be clear. We moved a lot of cars from the roadway.”
Skylar gave a nod, “Alright.” She pulled off the roadway onto the next that Dr. Knightley suggested. “Do you know of anywhere in-between? Somewhere safe to stay? When the sun sets it really isn’t a good idea to be out here.”
Dr. Knightley gave a nod, “Yes, we have a fallout bunker actually. It was pre-collapse.” She dug around in the glove box and pulled out a binder with maps and other things inside of it. “As idiotic as it is to leave these in our vehicles, it is actually a good thing right now.” She let out a soft chuckle. “So, Skylar, where are you from?”
“Haven.” Skylar replied, the word was distasteful to her now as she thought to the fights that the Commander forced innocent civilians to endure.
“Ah Yes. I’ve heard of Haven. Though, you’re not there, what happened?”
“The Commander was power hungry, he was putting humans against each other or zombies for fun, a sport…” Skylar spoke softly. “When I found out…” She shook her head.
“I see, is everyone else from there?”
“No, just Alden and Ayla.” Skylar spoke softly.
“I see.” Dr. Knightley got the hint, the subject was a bit touchy with Skylar.
Skylar drove on, silent for a long time. “Where is this bunker?” She questioned as the sun began to dip into the tops of the trees.
Dr. Knightely searched through the binder, “It’s just ahead, you’ll see a sign for Highwaymen Road. Shouldn’t be more than a mile.” Skylar nodded and turned onto the road as they came to it. It was a gravel road and dust kicked up as they drove down it. “Take a left here.” Dr. Knightley spoke and pointed. They pulled off into the forest. They traveled down this road for about three miles until they came to a building that was built into the side of the mountain. “This is it.” Dr. Knightley nodded as she pulled a key from the binder. “It’s safe. There are only two keys, this one and the one that our leader has.”
Skylar gave a nod and took the key. “Thanks.” She spoke as she turned off the engine. Skylar climbed out then and went to grab her pistol from her hip, it was then that she remembered that her weapons had been taken away in Esrey. She sighed and walked back to the jeep where she pulled a pistol from the bag. “Let’s head in, huh?” She spoke to Eva as she moved to the front door. “We will clear it like any other building, Dr. Knightley claims it is safe, but it’s possible that it isn’t…” She turned the key and opened the door. Skylar then rushed inside to clear the bunker.
