“When the Commander doesn’t return, as well as his other high ranking officers it will cripple District One. They do not expect to lose their best men. Losing the Commander should put them in disarray and we should have enough time to get ahead of them…” Skylar paused as she looked up to the balcony where Belinda stood. Skylar applauded with the others in the crowd as the woman spoke. She brought her arm up as a beam of light hit her in the face, when they were announced as assassins to the entire ball. Skylar made to stop time just as Eva teleported her to the ship. ‘Get this ship going!’ Eva’s voice, full of fear, and anger. Skylar looked to the city for a moment before she fired everything up and within seconds they were in the sky flying away from District 3 toward their home.
Skylar pulled her masquerade mask from her face and set it next to the wheel of her ship as she pulled a few levers and adjusted the sails of the ship. Booker came to her side and stood silently for a long moment, watching her, he had removed his mask as well. “This is only a minor set back, Sky.” He spoke, his voice soft.
Skylar looked to him a long moment as she leaned against the wheel of her ship. “There is no set back at all, Booker. They do not know who we are and we have taken out the Commander as well as three other high ranked officers of the Overseer Army. I believe we have completed the task at hand. Did we not?” She looked away from him again. There was a small tear in her dress, the material was darker in that area. If Eva hadn’t grabbed Skylar and teleported her, it was hard to say what may have happened. In a matter of moments, the four would have been dead. Without Eva. Skylar turned the wheel slightly, adjusting their angle as she pointed the ship toward District 16.
Booker watched Skylar for a long moment before he turned and stepped down to the lower portion of the deck just as Eva and Blake emerged from below deck. “The officers sure didn’t know.” He added to the end. “The Commander was utterly shocked, he didn’t know what to do when Skylar killed him.” He then continued to the front of the ship where he sat on a small crate and watched the clouds fly by beneath the silvery moonlight.
Skylar was silent the entire way home. She landed the ship at the docks near the Nighthand Guild and the group headed inside. She ordered for Belinda to be taken to Knightley, and to remain on lock down. Though, Skylar did not go. She simply disappeared up into her own quarters.
Booker carried the unconscious body of Belinda down into the labs where he helped Dr. Knightley strap her into one of the beds. A place that this woman might stay in until the doctor could figure out just what was happening. Was she truly a traitor? One of the Order? Or was she being controlled by them? Was that why she turned on her own flesh and blood? Dr. Knightley began testing right away, she had Tyrin draw blood samples and hook up electrodes to the woman and they ran tests through the night.
**
The next morning Booker pushed the door open to Skylar’s study. “Sky?” He asked, the air was cold within her study, the balcony door was open. The cool breeze of the fall days pushed into the study, flipping a few pages back on the open book upon her desk. Booker drew his brows together slightly as he pushed the switch to move the bookcase aside to the hidden bedroom. The bed was perfectly made. Skylar’s dress lay on the bed, a few drops of blood had dried on her comforter. “Skylar?” Booker called, he looked around the room a moment before he took off down the hall, he ran into Blake as he rounded a corner. “Blake!” He exclaimed, “Skylar, have you seen her?” He asked, breathless.
Blake looked to the second hand that stood before him, breathing quickly. “No, I haven’t. What’s going on?” He asked. “I just finished talking to Dr. Knightley, she has information as to why Belinda blamed us as assassins.”
Booker took in a breath, “You’re sure you haven’t seen her?” He asked, staring into Blake’s eyes. Blake shook his head. “I went to her study, I found her dress from the ball, some blood had dried on her comforter…the door to the balcony of the study was wide open…” He crossed his arms and took in a deep breath. “It isn’t like her.” He shook his head.
“I’ll look around for her.” Blake nodded, “She could have just stepped outside, don’t over think this and jump to conclusions, there has to be an explanation.”
Booker took in a quick breath before he took off down the hall. He scrambled, nearly tripping, as he sprinted down the stairs of the foyer, Guild members looked to him with quizzical expressions on their faces. Booker ran through the mansion, he checked the garden out back. He checked Skylar’s ship. Nothing. He rushed inside and down the spiral staircase to Dr. Knightley. “Tell me you know something; I can’t find Skylar.” He exclaimed, his eyes wide, he leaned forward, his hands on his knees, breathless.
“What are you talking about Booker?” Dr. Knightley looked up from Belinda, who’s eyes fluttered as she lay on the bed, her muscles tensed and loosened, almost as if she was having a minor medically induced seizure. Dr. Knightley injected a serum into Belinda and typed at her computer. “I figured our Warden was planning the next move. Preparing for the backlash of the Order. Is she not in her office?”
Booker shook his head, “No. She isn’t anywhere….I’ve looked….” He gasped as Belinda let out a cry from the medication.
“I’m sorry, Belinda…” Dr. Knightley apologized and sighed softly. “I’ve been trying to reverse what they’ve done to her.” She looked up at Booker. “It is some form of mind control; I can’t seem to break it. It’s as if they’ve hacked into her system and at the flip of a switch they can get in and control her, she can feel it.” She nodded as she pressed a few buttons and another serum injected, allowing Belinda to sleep. “It seems everything that I do only causes her pain…” She pulled up slides of her brain. “She was trying to warn me of something…but, she couldn’t finish the sentence, she would get out the same words each time, ‘I have to tell you something, I have to warn you’ But nothing further than that. Each time her brain waves would spike and she would fall silent before laughing manically.” Dr. Knightley shook her head. “The Order is full of a bunch of sick bastards.”
Booker paced as he listened to the doctor. “She knows something.” He growled. “She has to know something.” He gripped Belinda’s chin for a moment before he scoffed and began pacing once again. “God Damnit!” He slammed a pile of books to the ground in rage. “This can’t happen again!” He snapped.
**
The creaking of wood as it floated through the air and the sound of wind howling against the hull woke Skylar. She winced as she sat up, her head was throbbing. She found shackles around her wrists, the metal was black with a bright blue symbols upon it, Elvish symbols. “What…” She lifted her hands to her forehead, a huge gash was on her temple, blood dried down the side of her face. She looked to her clothing, she couldn’t remember anything. “Where…” She moved and pushed herself up. She looked around, she appeared to be in a cargo hull, boxes surrounded her. She looked at the labels on the boxes, food, merchandise, all headed for delivery to District 6. She pulled at the cuffs around her wrists trying to break the chain. Skylar let out a cry when she felt a stinging pain in her side. She stumbled and fell forward, she felt a hand pressed against her back and then the heat of someone’s body next to hers. The stinging subsided, though it left her breathless. “What’s going on?” She asked.
She was flipped so that her back was against the shipping containers. A man stood in front of her, he had short brown hair, and a well-groomed short beard upon his face. He wore military attire, an officer’s dress outfit. The jacket had the golden tasseled shoulder pieces, with golden buttons. He looked sharp. “What’s going on?” He asked, a smirk on his lips. “Skylar, Skylar.” He mused. “You should be ashamed to ask such questions.”
Skylar lunged at him, willing the shadows to help her escape the cuffs. She screamed in pain as shocks raced through her body. She toppled to the ground, she could feel it now. A device was clamped tightly around her neck. The man gripped Skylar by her wrists and pulled her arms up above her head as he pulled her along like a sack of potatoes through the decks. Skylar’s eyes fluttered as he pulled her up a flight of stairs, she felt each edge of every stair as it hit against her body. She fought for as long as she could, but eventually the darkness took her once more.
When Skylar awoke again she looked down to her wrists, the cuffs remained, but the glowing chain between the cuffs was gone. She stood and looked around. She was in a living quarter of some sort. She ran to the mirror and looked at herself in the mirror. She had a choker necklace around her neck, it wasn’t a necklace though. It was a mechanism. She took in a breath and snapped her fingers, willing time to cease. Though, time did not stop, she saw the jewel at the front of the necklace light up bright blue and just a moment after that she felt the same stabbing pain through her body. She collapsed to the floor once again, her hands pulling at the device.
“You’ll learn.” The voice of the man came again. He leaned over her and looked down into her eyes, her vision was hazy, though she could see a wicked smile on his face. “Skylar, you must learn.” He lifted her and sat her on the bed. Skylar stared to him as he grabbed a rag and wiped away the blood from her face. The wound was merely a small cut on the side of her head. “I’m sorry about this, it was the only way I could get you to come without a fight.” He then laughed, “Who am I kidding? I enjoyed it.” He chuckled. He then set the bowl of water with the bloody towel in it next to her on the bed. “My name is Elias Kane, you will learn to respect me, as you will learn to respect the device around your neck and wrists.” He lifted a small remote up, “This.” He smiled and clicked a button, shocks rushed through her body, she fell back screaming in pain. He released the button, “This allows me to demonstrate to you the importance of you listening to me, Skylar. I am to deliver you alive, and if I am to do that, you must comply.” He stood, “We will get off of this cargo ship in District 6. When we get off of the ship you are to follow my orders, if you do not, you will have consequences and believe me, that was a low setting.”
Skylar grit her teeth, “Why…are you doing this?”
“Why?” He grinned. “Why not? I get the money, and you are returned home. However, when William finds you to have the powers that you have.” He took in a breath and clicked his tongue. “I’m not sure where it will leave you, especially when I reveal to him that you were leading the Nighthand Guild.”
“William?” Skylar asked, her eyes fluttering. “Who…?”
Elias smirked then, “Greystoke. William and Amara Greystoke.” He watched as the realization came over Skylar’s expression. The man from the image in the book. Also, the head chair of the Order. William was Amara’s husband. “He has had a reward for the return of his kidnapped daughter since the day that you were taken so violently.” He watched the confusion come over her face before he chuckled. “Sleep tight, Skylar, we will have a few hours before we land.” He clicked a button on the device, causing pain to surge through her body, he didn’t lift off of the button until her body fell limp.
**
Skylar woke later, in a daze. She couldn’t focus. Was this all a dream. She sat up slowly her muscles ached. She lifted her hand up to the device on her neck, her pulse began to pound. She couldn’t hear the wind anymore. She could hear feet moving about the deck above her quickly, men shouting. She stood just as the door opened. Elias stood there, the dark smile upon his lips. “Perfect timing.” He moved to her and took her arm into him, leading her from the ship. Skylar looked down to his other hand, the small remote device was in his fingertips, his thumb was sitting on a button. She couldn’t do anything. She looked up at District 6. A huge mountain shadowed the city, snow was freely falling from the skies. Skylar stumbled slightly as Elias pulled her through the hustle of the city. The people here were poor. They moved out of Elias’ way, bowing their heads to him. Skylar caught the eyes of a few, the fear. She winced as he pulled on her again. They snaked through the city until they came to a home, it was one of the most well-kept homes in the city. A home of District One soldiers. An Overseer stood at attention outside of the home. He saluted to Elias as they entered the home.
Elias led her into the basement and tossed her into a dirty cold cell. It had a blanket on the floor that had plenty of dried blood on it. “Just precautions, I can’t have you trying to escape.” He stood above her as she pushed herself to her feet. He stared into her eyes. “You look just like your mother.” Elias studied her for a moment.
Skylar took in a breath; she didn’t speak to him. She waited until he turned his back on her, she lunged forward, reaching toward the remote that he held in his hand. Pain pierced through her body, she screamed in agony and fell to her knees. Elias turned as he shut the door to the cell, he held to remote up and clicked a different button. Skylar held her hands up to the device pulling at it as the pain surged through her body. She fell to her back whimpering as he stood at the edge of the cell. He released the button and knelt next to her, “I wouldn’t recommend pulling that off, Skylar.” He spoke as she lay breathless on the floor. “If you rip that from your neck, there is a mechanism built inside of it, you will kill yourself, it will slice your jugular veins and you will bleed out.” He paused a moment and let out a laugh. “How about you take another nap, hm?” He clicked a button down again. Shockwaves rushed through her body, Skylar screamed, her eyes squeezed shut. He held the button until she stopped screaming. When he released the button Skylar lay still, her chest heaving as she fought to breathe, blood trickled from her nose. She seized slightly as her eyes fluttered.
**
”Eva….” Skylar was on her hands and knees. Blue wisps came off of her body. She faded in and out of existence. “Eva….” Skylar spoke again. “Please…please hear me…” She gasped. Her body was fighting to hold on from the shocks that Elias had given her. However, this had given her a chance. Her soul had slipped into the spirit world. She pushed herself up and wandered through the darkness. “Father?” She asked. “Where…are you?” She stumbled and fell.
“Sky.” Mavis spoke, his arms wrapped around her. “No…no….you can’t be here.” He exclaimed. “You can’t, Skylar…” He pulled her into his arms, her body flickered, this gave him hope that she would return to the world of the living. He found Eva in the Warden’s study. Booker was there, he looked completely distraught. Blake stood at the open doors, his arms were crossed. Dr. Knightley was even there with Winslow and Lucas. The whole council was in Skylar’s office. Mavis could hear them talking to Eva about assuming the position of Warden until they could locate Skylar. Mavis slung Skylar over his shoulder before he reached out and touched Eva’s cheek. “Eva.” He spoke. “Come with me.” He forced her into the spirit world.
Mavis set Skylar on her feet in front of Eva. Her body flickered, her eyes fluttered. It had taken her hours in the darkness before she finally found her father. She fell weakly to her knees in front of Eva. “Eva…I…” She felt her father lift her back to her feet. Her body flickered more, like a television screen that couldn’t keep a clear signal. “Eva I…I don’t know what’s happening…” Tears streamed down the Warden’s face. “Eva I was taken, I didn’t run….” She shook her head. “Don’t let them tell you I ran.” She whispered, she reached out and took Eva’s hands into her own. Blood trickled from her nose. “Eva, find me…please…I…I’m in 6…District 6…a soldier has me…” She fell once again as her body flickered violently this time. Mavis tried to lift her but his hands pushed through her body. “Help…me…” She choked before she vanished in an eruption of blue smoke. As soon as Skylar disappeared, Eva was released by Mavis back into the living world where she sat at Skylar’s desk with everyone around her.
**
“Eva?” Booker held onto her gently, she had collapsed forward onto the desk when Mavis took her. “Eva can you hear me?”
Dr. Knightley was busy taking vitals. “She’s in another dimension again…the activity is off of my charts…” She looked to the small screen that she carried with her. “I don’t know what is causing this…”

As they came down off the ship Blake led Eva away, towards his room. “We shall leave Dr.Knightley to her subject… you are too filled with rage to make use of it” he spoke and stood at the door of her room.
“I’m fine…” she muttered and crossed her arms. She stood in front of the door for a long moment and then finally stepped inside. After such events everyone was quiet. In the morning they would surely have a meeting about it. Discuss what all happened, what they learned… everything. What was the next plan? Eva slipped from her dress and let it crumble in a mess by the wardrobe. She lay in just her underwear on the bed, her arms spread and legs over the side – staring to the ceiling. A long moment passed and she finally sat up and changed back into her uniform. She looked to her gauntlet as it glowed slightly, her fingers traced the etched lines. What was she truly capable of?
No one was stopping her, why should anyone? She placed her finger against her temple and shut her eyes. She let the worlds collapse around her, until she formed her image in the center of all worlds. This world was dark, she stood in the middle of the stars – amongst a floating round platform. Her eyes looked around to the darkness, the thousands of twinkling stars in the sky, the milky-way thick in the distance. She took in a deep breath, it was cold and empty, like on top of the tallest mountain. Eva stepped forward and instantly several rocks appeared – a bridge headed into the deep space.
“Where am I?” she spoke, her voice echoing out to the abyss.
“You are no where”
Eva looked around, no one to be seen. Though something like this could be expected from such a place. She stepped forward to the rocks that float before her, stepping across the bridge that continually formed.
“You could go forever… as long as your mind would let you… this bridge of eternity is your creation, like the world around us”
Eva continued forward – he was right.. the bridge went on.. and on. She turned at one moment and saw the round platform she came from. She had come a long way.
“This bridge is your life… you have come so far to get no where”
With each step four more rocks came up, continuing forward. As she walked she saw something in the distance. Another huge floating rock, which an entire city sat upon.
“Your life will lead to greatness…”
She stepped forward but another rock did not take its place, she almost fell into nothingness. She stepped back and gasped, looking to this greatness.
“You will never know what that greatness is… until you create your path”
Eva looked to the bridge that was formed. She looked to the huge city in the hazy distance. She shook her head. What did he mean? Was she supposed to create this next block? The rest of the bridge? What did he want?
“Will you trust the bridge you stand on now?”
She felt the rock beneath her shake – break into tiny pieces. She jumped back to the prior and it did the same. The crumbling rocks fell to the endless space, until she was forced to run all the way back to the original platform.
“You are so swayed by the voices to you…you are so weak” the voice grew soft. “You are not ready for the destiny before you…Do not return until you are…” he spoke and she felt her lungs crack - the air rushing out of her body. She cried out and squeezed her eyes.
Suddenly she stepped forward from her bed, appearing back into her home world. Where… did she just go? She looked around and the Sun was up once again, it was morning. She rushed to Dr. Knightley, to ask her questions..
“Good morning Eva” Dr. Knightley spoke to her, looking from the sleeping body of Belinda.
“Doctor.. I have a question… last night I seem to dive into a world I cannot quite pin. I disappeared from here. It was like standing in space… some one was talking to me. He said… I was not ready for the destiny before me. I never saw him once, but I could hear his voice…it was.. scary” she spoke softly and rubbed her upper arm. She sat down at a chair and shut her eyes for a moment.
“Hmm…” Dr Knightley thought for a moment. She hooked up a few monitors to her and walked around in her thought. “I read a book once.. talking about the perception of other worlds, dimensions… that they are endless. Everyone world has one thing in common at least – space. You look into the sky and theres darkness…stars..other worlds, other life forms…” she spoke and took a small vial of blood from Eva. “That maybe even… in between all these worlds is a world of just simply space, the link, the in between worlds. Space is that one thing we cannot scientifically explain… This world must have been that link between all worlds” she spoke and put a band aid over the small prick.
Eva looked to Knightley.. then who was that man? Was he the creator? She shivered at the idea of the Creator talking to specifically her. And if anything.. he shunned her. Not ready? Was this supposed to be words of encouragement?
Come blazing through the door was Booker. She stood up slightly to the loud noise. Her brows pulled together and she listened to Booker. “Skylar?” she questioned. “ I haven’t heard her all night, or this morning… usually she searches me out to ask me how I am doing..” Eva winced when he slammed the books down. “Booker” she spoke and walked over. “Calm down.. we will figure this out. Belinda.. she won’t have any answers for now. Trust me, I want answers out of her too” she spoke and placed her hands on his shoulders, squaring his vision to look into her eyes. “We will find her” she assure. When she let go she followed behind Booker as they all crowded her bedroom. Eva stepped to the bed and touched the dress. “There.. was not this much blood on her dress, I remember..” she spoke softly and then looked to the sheets. “It was dry by the time we came home… I danced with her, I remember seeing it..” she spoke softly and then looked to the open window.
The window curtains blew into the room with the gentle breeze. The world was calm but they were not… “Eva…” Blake spoke, standing at the door of the room with his eyes closed. “Be prepared for the worst…” he bowed his head. Eva looked to him and shook her head. “It is too soon for that decision. We are a team, I am not your Warden yet. We make the next decision together” she spoke and led them away from the room, into the council room.
She sat down on the edge of the bed and brought her hand up to her head. Just as she did she felt a rush of freezing cold air filled her. She slipped from her body, in a wispy state and looked to the two. “Mavis” she spoke and reached forward to him. Some how he ripped her away from her living state, into the spirit world… She stepped forward and touched Skylar’s hand. “Skylar!” she cried out and listened to her. She shut her eyes and suddenly her spirit body teleported. She stood before Skylar who lay limp on the ground, something tight about her neck. Eva turned and saw a tall menacing man with some kind of remote in his hand. She moved forward and barely touched this man – and suddenly she disappeared.
Eva gasped as she came to. “She didn’t run” she spoke and then stood, taking in a deeper breath. “She - was taken. I – I don’t know how.. Mavis just contacted me using the Spirit world, I found out that way. She is in district 6, some soldier has her… I was able to see her, she has this collar on… some kind of prisoner” she spoke softly and then turned to the door. “We need to get her” she turned her head as she walked to the council room. The group followed behind her and they each took a seat.
Blake stood slightly away from the table, pondering. “He wont be expecting us to know where he is, but he will certainly have increased guard and staff to assure her safety. Clearly he wants her alive…but why..?” he spoke softly.
“Maybe it is to draw us out. It is one thing to kill the Warden, another to kill the Warden and the entire council, surely then the guild would fall” Dr. Knightley spoke and looked back to Eva, who sat in her spot.. the Warden chair empty.. Eva looked to Blake and nodded. “To up right steal her from her bedroom… if District One was completely away and willing to steal her from her bedroom they would just bomb this entire building, done. No.. this is an outside figure, a contract to take her to District One.. maybe it is even one of our people…” she pondered and sighed.
“So do we just pull up there and wisk her away? How do we do this?”
“Carefully..” Blake spoke and then grinned slightly. “No, but we will have to be sneaky. If we come marching in they will just escape out the back door with her. This will be have to be a partial solo mission… the less people we send in there the less we risk getting caught.. the question is how..”
Suddenly Eva’s eyes turned blue and from her glowing form came a blue wispy body. Mavis stood at the Warden’s chair, his arms reached down and rest on the table. “I will help Eva… with her teleporting powers she will be more than capable. We will Spirit Meld… I will give her my ability and knowledge, I will bring my daughter back home” he spoke with a powerful voice.

Elias stood over Skylar’s limp unconscious body, his dark eyes watched her, analyzing her movements. He was worried that she had been unconscious for so long, he worried that he hadn’t released the button soon enough. He reached down and lifted her body over his shoulder. Her arms hung limply and swung around to his steps as he carried her upstairs. Overseer soldiers looked to him as he carried her, looking to the woman over his shoulder.
“Admiral.” A soldier that stood at the base of the stairs that led to the rest of the house spoke. He saluted him. “If I may speak sir.”
Elias stopped, he adjusted Skylar on his shoulder and looked to this soldier, “Private.” He spoke, his voice lacked emotion, “Speak then if you must.”
The soldier looked curiously over Elias’ shoulder. “W-who is this girl?” He asked, he straightened when Elias shot him a stern look.
Elias then smirked, “Actually, it would do you gents well to know who she is. Just how important she is.” He shifted her again and pulled her into his arms so that she was cradled there, her head hung back into the air, her arm dangled toward the floor. Her skin was pale, though it was red around the area of the mechanism around her neck, red veiny lines shot out from the device. “Come along, Private.” He climbed the stairs, he took Skylar up to the third floor of the mansion, there were a total of five floors. It was huge. He lay her on the bed and inspected her neck carefully before he turned to the soldier that followed her upstairs.
The soldier stood silently, he stared at Skylar, “Her neck, sir.” He noted. “Is she okay?”
“She will live.” Elias spoke he smirked then, “Such care, for a soldier. Private, his woman is of utmost importance for you to protect. We cannot afford for her to get hurt, or taken away from us. This is Duke Greystoke’s daughter.” He paused as he watched the soldier stare to Skylar once more. “I finally found her, thanks to Belinda.” He grinned, “Now, you will protect her with your life, kill anyone that tries to get near her. You will stand at the door and guard her, watch over her while she sleeps, call me when she wakes, she is a bit….” He paused, thinking of a good word, “Unruly, she grew up without being taught proper manners of how to be the Duke’s daughter.”
**
Time passed and Skylar didn’t move, she didn’t budge at all. Elias stood over her, his arms crossed, his brows pulled together. He held the remote in his hand. He reached forward and touched the device upon her neck, in this moment Eva touched him from the spirit world. He gasped as he felt the same electricity course through his body that he had induced on Skylar. His hand gripped tightly around the remote as he fell to his knees next to the bed. He coughed as he reached to his neck, but there wasn’t a device. Eva had caused this to happen to him. “Admiral!” The private ran forward and placed his hand on his back as his officer regained his composure. “Are you alright, sir? What happened?” He asked.
Elias looked to Skylar, his brows drawn together, he straightened his jacket and took in a deep breath. “I’m not certain.” He spoke and shook his head. “Leave us be.” He ordered as he moved to a briefcase and pulled a tool from it. It looked like a needle with a large canister attached to it. It was the device that they used in District One to syphon out the magic from those with powers. Elias screwed a few parts to the device. Once he finished putting it together it resembled a gun, the canister was in place of where the bullets would be, crystal clear, empty. He looked to Skylar as she lay unconscious on the bed, now was the perfect time to harvest her magic. The sooner the better. If she was kept weak, she wouldn’t be able to use her powers at all. Though, with the device around her neck, he didn’t have to worry about that. Elias came to the side of the bed, he pushed her head to the side slightly and then he carefully attached the syringe into a port that was on the side of the device around her neck. He pushed the gun against her neck until it clicked into place. When this happened the device around her neck lit up a bright pulsating red, her heartbeat. Elias looked to her eyes which were moving frantically beneath her eyelids, her eyes fluttered. He pulled the trigger on the gun to begin the harvest.
Skylar’s eyes shot open, she screamed in agony. Elias clicked the remote to get her to stop, nothing. It didn’t shock her. He clicked it again. Skylar gripped onto his arm that held the syringe gun to her neck. Elias growled and pressed his knee into her chest harshly. “You need to lie still.” He snapped. Skylar brought her knees up, she pushed and shoved against him. It felt like razor blades were running through her veins. She screamed and beat against his arm. His free hand grasped around both of her wrists and held her arms down above her head. “Stop it.” He snarled as he pulled the trigger again, Skylar’s body tensed as he pushed his knee into her chest. She couldn’t breathe. Elias held her down, he clicked the trigger a few more times, trying to draw as much from her as he could. The canister began to fill with blood, slowly, it trickled in like a stream starved of water. Skylar fought against him, she screamed and tried to pull away, but he had her pinned. Eventually her muscles gave away, her eyes fluttered. Elias pulled the device harshly from her neck, it clicked loudly and the device around her neck fell dormant once again. He looked to the canister as he removed it from the gun. He grinned as he looked to the full bottle. Getting a full bottle from the subjects in District One was impossible. He chuckled as he put the filled canister into the case and replaced the canister with a new one in the gun. He would wait until she woke again and drain her more. Eventually, the bottles wouldn’t fill, when that happened he would know that she wouldn’t be capable of magic for a good amount of time.
**
Mavis’ apparition at the council stood up straight abruptly. “Skylar!” He called just as he disappeared in a gust of wind. Mavis ran through the blackness of the spirit world, he sprinted toward his daughter’s voice.
“Father….” She was weak. “Father…help…. help me…” She was begging, pain could be heard in her voice.
Mavis ran until he found her laying upon the dark ground of the spirit world. She didn’t flicker as much this time. “Sky…no….no no…” He knelt and pulled her into his arms. “Skylar, don’t.”
Skylar looked up to her father, blood trickled from her nose, her skin was pale. “Father…” She breathed. She flickered and gasped, her eyes grew wide. She winced in pain. “Father…I’m…sorry…I…”
“Shhh….no don’t speak, Sky.” He stood as he held her to his chest. He took in a deep breath as he spun around. “Eva!” He called, he once again ripped her from reality into the spirit world. “We don’t have time. We don’t have time to wait.” His tone was full of fear for his daughter’s life. She hung in his arms limply. “We need to go now, I need you to save her…I don’t know what he has done…” He looked to Skylar as she flickered in his arms.
“Eva…” She muttered. She reached out and touched Eva’s cheek. “Eva…I’m…sorry…” She whimpered, tears streaming down her cheeks. “I’m…”
“No.” Mavis spoke, his tone strong. “We’re going to get you out of this, Skylar. Don’t give up.” He looked down to his daughter, she was weaker than before. Somehow. He couldn’t place it. He watched as she melted away to dust in his arms.
**
Mavis appeared again at the council table, he gripped Eva by her shoulders and disappeared into her body, her eyes were a glowing blue. Suddenly, she disappeared. Mavis controlled her. They reappeared in District 6 along the roofline of the city. He pulled from her body and stood before her, he held her shoulders and stared into her eyes. “We need to find my daughter, Eva. I don’t know what twisted experiment that soldier just did to her, but whatever it is, she is slipping.”
**
Skylar gasped for air, her eyes opened and she sat up, her whole body ached. She looked around the room. The private rushed forward. “Lady Greystoke.” He knelt at the edge of her bed. “Are you alright?” He asked.
Skylar pulled at the device on her neck. Her body trembled. “No.” She whispered. “No…I’m not okay…”
“What can I do for you my lady?” The private asked. His hands were on her shoulders, steadying her.
“Water.” She whispered as she looked to his belt, his sword, his pistol. She then thought of the device around her neck. Surely Elias would kill her.
She watched as he stood and turned. He went to the table in the room and poured her a glass of crystal clear water before he brought it back to her. He knelt once more. “My lady.” He bowed his head. “It is good to see you alive. I only apologize we did not find you sooner, Lady Greystoke.”
Skylar watched him, confused, she remembered the conversation with Elias, about William Greystoke. She took the glass into her hands as she let things sift through her mind. Her eyes fluttered, she felt so weak. She couldn’t escape if she wanted. Not in this condition. She wondered how long she could even stand.
“My lady.” The Private pulled a handkerchief from his back pocket. “You’re bleeding.” He brushed away the blood. This soldier before her, he wasn’t like the others. He looked to the white cloth a moment before he looked back to her.
“What happened?” She whispered, “What did he do to me?” She sipped the water once more. “I’m so weak…” She flinched slightly as he wiped more blood from her nose.
The private took in a breath, “I’m not sure, my lady.” He shook his head. “I heard screams…but Admiral told me to leave, I do not know what happened.” He wiped more blood away. “You should rest, my lady.” He took the empty glass from her fingertips.
Skylar shook her head. “No. I can’t.” She looked up to him. “He kidnapped me.” She remembered the moment in her room back at the mansion. She pulled her bangs back to show the cut on her temple. “Please, you have to help me.” She begged. “Get this thing off of me.”
The private watched her, he lowered his head and sighed, “I can’t my lady. I know this is hard, but you were not kidnapped, per say, you had already been kidnapped, my lady.”
The door pushed open and Elias came into the room. “Private.” He spoke with a stern tone.
“She’s bleeding sir.” He spoke as he brushed away another trickle of blood.
“She’ll be fine.” Elias walked over to the table that held the case with the syringe gun. He had his remote in his hand, he had tinkered with it, in hopes to restore its power.
“Admiral.” The private stood, he looked to what Elias pulled from the case.
“Go on, guard the door, private. This does not concern you.” Elias ordered, he drew his brows together.
“It does.” The private spoke defiantly. “I am sworn to protect the Greystoke family, I was ordered by you to protect her with my life. You are injuring her, Admiral. She is weak. She is bleeding, sir.”
Elias smirked and let out a chuckle, he looked to Skylar. “Are you hurt?” He asked as he held up the remote.
“No…no I’m…” Skylar reached forward and took the Private’s hand. “Please….” She whispered.
The soldier stood tall, he gripped her hand a moment before he pulled from her touch. “You need to allow her to rest, Admiral.”
Elias chuckled he set down the syringe gun and pulled his pistol from his belt. “Step aside, private.” He ordered, “I will not hesitate.”
The private swallowed, he took in a breath and shook his head. “I cannot allow you to harm her.”
Elias rose a brow, “How about this?” He clicked the remote, Skylar screamed as pain rushed through her body.
The private turned, his eyes wide. He touched the device around her neck and flinched as it shocked him too. “Stop! Stop!” He cried.
Elias lifted his finger from the button and chuckled. “You’ll stand at the door.” He ordered. “You’ll watch. One wrong move from you, private, you’re as good as dead, and I’ll hold this button down until blood comes from her mouth. But she won’t be dead.” He chuckled. “The pain that will be coursing through her body will be immense. But she’ll live, for me to do it again, and again.” He snickered. He loved this part. He loved torturing. That was what he did in District One. He was one of the head soldiers in charge of syphoning the magic from the prisoners, he was in charge of inflicting as much pain as possible. This, is how he knew Belinda. He had tortured her several times. Though, when he learned of Eva. And when he learned that Eva was taken by the Guild, he knew Belinda was an easy in to distract everyone from Skylar. He had been watching her for years. Once Jasper was gone he knew he could make his move and he would receive all of the money for returning her to her father.
“What is that thing?” The private asked as Elias lifted the syringe gun into his hand again.
Elias smiled, he looked to the device a moment and then to Skylar. “It syphons her magic. That’s how we power District One. That’s why everything is so perfectly clean. But it isn’t beneath the streets in the prison. No.” He smirked “But that is the price that those with magic must pay, it is illegal.”
“But…she’s the Dukes daughter…Admiral…he…the Duke…he won’t approve of this.” The private took a step forward.
Elias clicked the remote on cue and Skylar screamed, her body tensed, she fell to the floor as he released the button. “He will appreciate her lack of magic when I deliver her.” He lifted Skylar from the floor, her chest heaved as she fought to breath. He tossed her onto the bed and pushed her head to the side. Skylar gripped onto his arm, she punched him square in the jaw. Elias pressed his knee into her chest like he had hours before, Skylar swung again, she caught his jaw again, knocking him back. Elias clicked the remote, this caused Skylar to stop, he clicked it several times, sending waves of shocks through her body. She lay on the bed, her eyes shut tightly, her jaw clenched. Elias chuckled, “There.” He smiled and gripped her chin. He shoved the syringe into the port on the side of her neck. It clicked into place, Skylar whimpered as she gripped onto his arm, trying to push him away, though her muscles wouldn’t allow it. He squeezed the trigger, she cried out in pain as the canister began to fill once again.
The private grit his teeth, he looked away. He tried everything he could not to hear her screams. He watched as Skylar’s grip on Elias became weak, and as her screams became silent. The private watched as Elias pulled the syringe gun from the port and pulled the full canister from the gun. Skylar was motionless once again. Elias placed the full canister with the other one and turned, “See, she’s fine.” He spoke and chuckled as he left the room.
The private rushed forward and took Skylar’s hands into his, “Lady Greystoke? My lady? Can you hear me?” He felt for a pulse, it was weak, but there. He looked next to her hip on the bed. The Admiral had forgotten the remote. He gasped as he lifted it into his fingertips. “Don’t worry my lady, I’ll get you out of this…” He spoke softly a he slipped the remote into his pocket. He opened the window and used the hilt of his sword to beat against the wire mesh that held them inside. He looked out onto the rooftop, the sun had gone over the horizon within the last hour. The darkness would provide cover. He slipped off his military jacket to reveal a vest beneath. He rolled up his sleeves before he wrapped Skylar in the jacket to keep her warm, snow was still falling outside. The private pulled her into his arms, “Come on, my lady. I don’t know where I am taking you, but someone has to be searching for you.” He set her on the rooftop outside of the window before he too climbed out. The snow fell in a thick blanket as he pulled her back into his arms.
**
“Father….” Skylar flickered as she appeared before Mavis and Eva. Her form was a wispy blue. “Eva…” She reached forward, blood leaked from her nose and mouth now. “Eva…I…” She flickered, the words lost in static. She fell to her knees. Mavis tried to lift her, only for his hands to go through her.
Mavis looked to Eva, “We need to hurry.”
“The…mansion…” Skylar choked out, “You’re…almost…” She collapsed and turned to ash which floated off through the sky. The mansion could be seen from their position.
Mavis took in a deep breath, “Ready?”
**
Skylar’s eyes fluttered, her body trembled from the cold. “Wh…where…?” She felt the Private’s arms around her, she felt each careful step that he took. It was then that she heard the siren. She felt him stop, she could hear the fear in his breathing. “What’s happened?” She asked, her voice weak.
“Shh, my lady.” The private spoke. “Where do I take you?” He looked down.
“My father…and Eva…they….” Her eyes fluttered and she fell limp once again.
The private stared down to her, blood leaked from her nose and mouth. “I’ve got you Lady Greystoke.” He whispered as he looked over his shoulder, he could hear shouting. He slid down a rooftop and ran across another. He came to a stop atop a rooftop, he looked back at the Mansion, it was crawling with soldiers. Elias would be hot on his trail. He had to do something.

Eva stood up when Mavis disappeared. “Skylar must be in the spirit world again” she whispered and suddenly there was a pound on the table. Booker slammed both of his fists on the table – forcing a crack down the smooth wooden texture. Blake stepped forward and grunted, his arms still crossed, “Throwing a fit wont make this any better” he spoke roughly. Dr. Knightley stood from her seat and paced slightly in the room.
“If she’s in the spirit world – then that mean she’s dying.. or even dead!” Booker cried out and stepped back from his chair. The force of his movement caused the chair to fly backwards and tumble in a clatter of loud noise. Eva winced and squeezed her eye brows together. Blake shook his head as Booker continued to rage. “I should have been by her side!” he squeezed his fits together “raaughh!!” he growled loudly and then kicked the chair. “I’m going to go get her” he rushed of, slamming the door behind him.
“Lucas…. Please.. go stop him” Dr. Knightley spoke and sighed softly. Blake quietly picked up the chair and placed it back.
“The last thing we need to do is act irrationally… whatever we do it must be together-“
Suddenly Mavis reappeared. Dr. Knightley gasped and then suddenly Eva was gone.
When Mavis split from her she took a sudden deep breath. “Mavis!” she cried out and shook her head. She felt like her entire body had been squeezed and ripped apart – then instantly glued back together. She looked forward as they stood ontop of a building – the snow falling from the sky, the little flakes getting caught in her eyelashes.
“Okay” she nodded and followed Mavis as he ran forward. As they came to the edge of the roof she slid to a stop – nearly falling off of the room. Mavis gripped her arm as she had fallen onto her side, sliding down the slant of the roof. “Come on” he spoke and pulled her to her feet. “You have to keep moving, if you slow down you wont make the jump. Just trust in your feet” he stood up and jumped to the next building.
Eva backed up and looked to the next building. She took a deep breath and ran forward – jumping as high as she could. When she landed on the next building she slipped and began sliding again. She cried out as the pain of the uncomfortable landing shook her. Just before she fell she brought her hand to her head – teleporting. She appeared back on the roof and she took in a deep breath.
“Don’t forget the gifts I gave you… you are no longer that mortal”
That strange dark voice came back to her. The same one from the void, that inbetween. She looked to Mavis who ran forward, jumping from roof to roof. She followed behind him – running and teleporting with ease. She kept her hand up to her temple, following behind him with ease.
“I can feel her” he called out over the howl of the snow. It began to snow harder, the wind picking up. Before long she could hardly see a foot infront of her – the thick snow came down so fast. The world was a white sheet.
Suddenly she ran into the back of Mavis. Alarms had sounded throughout the entire city. He looked around as they were suddenly surrounded by soldiers upon the rooftops. “Shoot!” a commander shouted. Mavis grit his teeth and held his hand out – his mark glowing upon his hand – Instantly one of the soldiers turned and shot each other.
Eva shouted as a Soldier gripped her hand and yanked her forward.
“It is time for you to fight for your destiny. Create your path “
Eva teleported behind him, twisting his arm about him as it still held onto her hand. He broke his arm and gripped his own knife – stabbing him in the gut. The soldier cried out and fought against her. Eva yanked the dagger out and stabbed him again – in the neck this time. She dropped him as he became limp… her entire arm was covered in the blood. The pure white snow became thick slush with blood. Eva dropped the knife and looked up, her entire body shaking.
It might have been from the freezing cold. Or the fact she just took a mans life. It was hers or his… that’s what it was… she bit her lip.
“Eva!” Mavis shouted and waved to her. The roof was littered with dead bodies, somehow Mavis has already took them out. She dashed forward, squinting her eyes as she saw something in the distance.
“It’s Skylar!” he ran forward and wrapped his arms around Skylar. “Eva… we need to go” he spoke as he heard the loud thudding of several more soldiers coming their way. Eva wrapped her arms around Mavis and the man who was carrying her. She squeezed her eyes and they teleported away.
They appeared in the center of what was her bakery. The entire place had been smashed. The glass table which held rotting muffins were shattered on the floor. The tables broken and over turned – cob webs in the corners of the room, the smell of dust and dirt filled the air, maybe a bit of mold. Eva turned and shook her head. “Come on” she whispered and pulled at Mavis, leading him down stairs.
Her house was torn apart, papers and books pull all over the ground. But it seems their rage wasn’t as bad, it wasn’t too terrible in her home. “Who are you?” Eva spoke – teleporting next to the private. “If you even so think of reporting back to those evil bastards – I will. Kill. You.” She bluffed, speaking through her teeth. She turned and rushed to Mavis’ side. “Is she okay? What happened to her? She is so pale…” Eva spoke and brought her hand to Skylar’s cheek.
“Skylar..” Eva called to her in a hushed tone. “Wake up…I’m.. I’m not ready to be the warden, not yet” she whispered.

The private ran, he slipped and slid down the side of one of the rooftops, he hugged Skylar tightly to his body, his eyes wide. He landed on his feet and continued to run on a flat roof, he leaped across to another and suddenly he was surrounded.
“Put her down!” A soldier ordered.
The private stood, his eyes wide, he looked down to the unconscious woman in his arms, the blood on her face. “I can’t sir.” He responded, his voice shaking.
“By order of Duke Greystoke release the girl and I’ll see to it that you get minimal time for her attempted kidnapping.” The soldier aimed his gun.
The private took in a shaken breath. He turned and ran, he hugged Skylar to his body and sprinted through the only opening he could see. He heard a gun fire from behind him but as he winced, as he anticipated the feeling of a bullet slicing through his flesh, it did not follow. He looked back to see a man among the soldiers, disappearing and reappearing, the soldiers shot each other. He stood with a loose jaw as he watched the men fall to the ground. Then, he heard the man yell, ‘It’s Skylar!’ The private gasped as Mavis was in front of him in the blink of an eye. Mavis brushed the blood from Skylar’s cheek before he looked up to the private. There wasn’t time for questions. In another blink of an eye the private felt as though his body was crushed and ripped apart. He gasped as they appeared in the bakery in District 2.
Mavis took Skylar from his arms and pushed papers from the couch. It was then that Eva teleported in front of the Private, he jumped back, his eyes wide. “I-I…” He gulped, “I saved her…I…I…” He stuttered. Eva had turned her attention to Mavis and Skylar then.
“I don’t know, Eva.” Mavis spoke as he looked Skylar over. He touched the device on her neck and looked to the cuffs upon her wrists. “She’s fragile…”
Skylar’s eyes fluttered when Eva touched her cheek, her breaths were small.
“The…um…Admiral, he used a tool…” The private stepped forward, his pulse pounded in his ears. He had never seen magic before, sure he read books about it. But in real life? No. He hadn’t faced it before at all. The magic that these two before him held was incredible. “Admiral Elias Kane, he said he was syphoning her magic…”
Mavis moved quickly, his fingers gripped around the boys neck for a moment, he stared into his eyes, the fear and absolute horror, the private trembled. Mavis released him. “What did he do to her?” He asked, his eyes cold.
“This…device…it looked like a gun, but it was a syringe.” The private found a piece of paper and a pen, he drew it. “It filled the canister with her blood…it looked like blood…I don’t know how many times he did this to her…” He sighed as Mavis took the sketch that he created. “He also had this…” The private pulled the remote from his pocket, he very carefully set it down on the coffee table. “It…makes…that thing…shock her…” The private trembled slightly still. “I couldn’t let the Admiral do this. I couldn’t. I swore in to protect the people. I can’t just stand idle and watch something like this happen. Especially the Duke’s daughter….she’s been through too much already….I…she screamed so loud..I….” He shook his head. “I’m sorry…”
Mavis rose a brow, he looked back to his daughter and took in a slow breath. “Okay.” He whispered. He looked back to Skylar’s body, he moved her head gently, looking at the device around her neck. He pulled slightly at it, Skylar whimpered and her body tensed.
“You can’t take it off without a key.” The private spoke. “I overheard the Admiral speaking to Lady Greystoke, he told her if she tried to pry it off that it would sever her jugular, it would kill her.” He looked around the ransacked home. A look of sadness washed over his face, “I know this home…” He whispered. He then looked to Eva, “I’m so sorry….” His voice was soft as he picked up a picture that had broken glass on the front of the frame, he picked out the broken pieces. “Meredith Rollins.” He watched for Eva’s reaction. “You’re Eva.” He searched her eyes, “I…” He looked back to the image. “My father was great friends with your mother.” He nodded as he slipped the image out of the frame and set it on the coffee table. “When I was a boy we used to come by every morning. I remember seeing you, flour on your face.” He had a small smile on his lips now. The private paused for a moment, “I’m sorry…” He shook his head, “I’m Private Wallenberg. Axel….” He lowered his eyes away from Eva and sighed. “Just Axel now.”
Mavis watched the young man before him, “Thank you, Axel.” He spoke softly. “Eva we need to get back to District 16. I fear Dr. Knightley is the only one who can help Skylar, and we are running out of time.” He brushed Skylar’s cheek, no response. Mavis suddenly disappeared.
Axel looked around the room a moment, “Um….” He took in a breath, “Where did he go?” He looked around another moment before he looked to Eva, “I’m sorry about the bakery, Eva.” He looked to the smashed glass and sighed. He was there, when the search was conducted. He hadn’t gone in, but he had been instructed to stand guard, as usual. He remembered, the look in his father’s eyes. As his father stood before the shop. His father was Lucas, the regular that came in every morning and talked to Eva. Once Axel joined the grand guard, he hadn’t been home in months, he was shipped to Overseer camp and just after graduating his first assignment was to stand guard outside of Brewster’s as Admiral Kane and other officers ransacked the bakery.
**
“Skylar?” Mavis wandered the darkness of the spirit world. “Skylar!!” He called to her. Mavis found himself running through memories, he watched as his younger self taught Skylar how to shoot, how to fight, how to be sneaky. Then he looked up, on a black ledge Skylar sat, her feet dangling. She had a small smile on her lips. Mavis appeared next to her. “Sky…” He whispered.
Skylar looked to him. She wore her assassin uniform, as she did in the real world. Blood trickled from her nose and mouth. Her eyes were tired. “Father.” She breathed, her body flickered.
Mavis searched her eyes. “Skylar, don’t give up. You can’t be here.” He took her hands into his for a moment before he brushed the blood from her face. “Please, Sky….don’t leave like this…”
“It’s so cold.” She whispered, “The pain is gone, but it’s so cold now, father.”
“No, Skylar.” He reached for her but she disintegrated before him into ashes.
**
Mavis reappeared, his breaths were heavy. He looked to see Skylar sitting upon the coffee table, she stared at her body. Her eyes searched over her pale body. Her form flickered. “Eva, I’m sorry….” She whispered, her voice was weak. “I wish; I could fix this…” She reached out and touched Eva’s shoulder, her hand fell through. “It’s so cold…please, Eva…” She disappeared then.
Axel stared to the place that Skylar’s spirit had been. He paced slightly, “No way….no….” He shook his head, “No.” He said again. “That…that was not her spirit…was it? Like that?! Is Lady Greystoke going to die? What’s going on?!!”
Mavis took in a breath. “We need to move. Axel, guard Skylar for a moment would you?” He looked to Eva. “I’m sorry Eva.” He moved forward, melding with her again, her eyes turned a bright blue and with that Eva disappeared. They reappeared in the council chambers. Mavis pulled from her body again, breathing heavily. He was weak from his extended time outside of the spirit world. He looked around the empty room and stumbled slightly before he rushed up the stairs and into the mansion. He ran into Dr. Knightley in the hallway, he took her by her shoulders. “Dr. Knightley.” He spoke, his own body began to flicker. “Skylar, is alive, but she is dangerously close to slipping over the edge…I can’t bring her here, Eva isn’t strong enough to bring us all this far…I’ve given her as much of my power that I can…Skylar is with us in District 2, at the bakery.”
Dr. Knightley stared at Mavis as he spoke, his words sounded as weak as he appeared. “Yes, Warden.” She nodded before she ran off. “Booker!!” She burst into Booker’s room, it was empty. She ran down the hall to the Warden’s study and found him pacing in front of Skylar’s desk. “Booker.” She spoke. “Booker, I know where Skylar is, you’re the only one that can fly her ship besides her…”
Booker looked to Dr. Knightley, he looked exhausted. “She’s alive?” He asked, shock in his voice. “Eva saved her?”
Dr. Knightley nodded, “Mavis was just here. Yes.”
Mavis ran back to Eva, he touched her shoulder and melded with her body once more before he forced her to teleport back into her bakery in District 2. He pulled from her body and stumbled, gasping. “I can’t…stay much longer…” He breathed.
Axel held Skylar in his arms, her body was trembling. “We need to do something…” He whispered softly as he looked down to the warden in his arms.
Skylar’s eyes fluttered. “Wh…where…” She shook as she tried to speak. “Eva…I…”
“Shh….it’s okay, you’re safe, rest.” Axel spoke softly. “You’re safe.”
Mavis touched her cheek, “He’s right, Sky, we have you, you’re going to be okay.” He looked to Eva. “Can you get us on the rooftops?” He asked, “We need to get to the port for when Booker and the crew arrives…Dr. Knightley will be with him, we can only hope that they come in time…”

Eva listened to the private, talking about the gun that sucked away her power. “That’s what they’re doing up in district one, huh? Stealing people’s magic..” she shuddered and grew silent as Axel looked around. She stepped forward when he picked up a picture. Her eyebrows furrowed together when she spoke her mothers name. She reached forward and slipped the picture from his fingertips and folded it quietly. “Well…Private… at least you’ve done something decent” she spoke softly and tucked the picture away. “We don’t have time to dawdle in emotions…” she spoke and then turned around.
As Mavis disappeared something tugged at Eva, a part of her left. She gripped her chest and then turned to where Mavis was standing…
She gasped when Mavis teleported. An image of her stood behind him, but no one recognized her presence. She glowed a bright blue. It seemed part of her had officially become apart of Mavis, and now a formation of herself had appeared where he went. A bit of blood leaked from her nose. She sucked it back and looked to Blake who stepped to her. “I can see you” he spoke softly and smiled. “You’re stronger than you think” he then unstrapped the dagger from his thigh and knelt down. He strapped it to Eva’s thigh and tightened it. Eva moved her leg, it fit perfectly. “I can see it in your eyes” he spoke softly and then smiled slightly. “It’ll get easier…” he nodded. “I’ll be on the ship”
The more full part of Eva still stood before Axel as another image of her teleported away. She turned to Axel and hung her head. “You wouldn’t of been able to stop it, no one could of. This was my fate.” She held her hands up and then she swiftly moved away, she slipped away to the kitchen of the store and came back moments later. She had a cup which steeped several dried herbs in a bit of water. “This should help her, a little”.
Eva knelt down and held the cup to Skylars lips, letting bit of by bit go into her mouth. “It’s okay Skylar” she whispered. “This will help.. it’ll numb a little bit of that pain, and give you a bit of energy…” she helped Skylar finish the cup. Afterwhich she brought her thumb up to Skylar and brushed a bit of the liquid away that escaped her lips.
Mavis came back from seeing Booker and then teleported. In that instant the image of Eva disappeared and her true self at the Bakery became full once more. Eva, in the flesh, looked down to her thigh – the dagger had traveled with her. She shook her head – she was just in two places at once…
Eva sniffed back a bit more blood and wiped at her nose. “Okay” she spoke and nodded. “My attic has a hatch to the roofs, for when my chimney gets clogged” she grinned and then looked around her room. She felt a dark pit in her stomach as she saw each overturned item, her home. She moved swiftly to the bedroom and opened a chest at the end of the bed. She reached down and pulled a gun out. It sat in a long holster, when she pulled it out she turned it around in her hands. It appeared like an older gun with an extra long double barrel, the bottom of the lower barrel had a sharp blade that led to the trigger guard. She stood and strapped the holster around her hip and sheathed the gun. The tip of the sheath was almost to her knee, the gun was truly massive, but its weight was half the expected…
This gun had been her fathers. It was a very legendary gun, the Hellion. It was the gun that described her father, the gun blade. Eva turned and then walked into the living room. “Okay, lets go” she nodded and she watched Axel pick up Skylar. She led them back up stairs and into the kitchen where a ladder dropped down in the storage room. Eva led them up and walked just a little bit in the attic before coming to the hatch. She opened it and felt a rush of cold. She slowly climbed up and looked around. She stood in pitch dark… stars in the distance.
She suddenly felt something grab her from behind, an arm choking her around her throat. She grasped at the arm and fought against the body.
“If you’re going to carry a dagger you better know how to use it” the voice growled, deep and dark, that voice from before. From the void…
Eva pulled the dagger from her thigh and stabbed him in the arm. He released her and she fell forward – gasping for air. Suddenly before her a patch of darkness formed a being. He was tall, pale white skin with pitch black eyes that stared into her. He reached forward and grasped her arm and threw her down onto the ground, pinning her easily with his knee. “I chose you!” he spat loudly and grit his teeth. “You must find it within you. Think of Mavis, think of that knowledge I gave you” he growled. “Become him” he shouted and brought a dagger down onto her neck.
Eva shut her eyes in fear. Mavis’s image crossed her eyelids and she bit her lower lip. Suddenly in one sudden motion she threw the figure down, he legs straddling his chest – she punched him in the face several times before finally drawing her gun blade – the barrel just inches from his chest.
Instantly he disappeared – she was standing still ontop of a frozen roof – snow piling over her. “Eva, help me” Axel called as he held Skylar up with both arms. Eva leaned down, confusion spreading across her face, she pulled Skylar up. Axel crawled up and then grabbed Skylar once more. Mavis shut the door once he was up and nodded. “Head to the port” he spoke as his body flickered slightly. Eva turned to Axel and nodded, they ran across the roofs. She had her hand on the back of Axel – with each new house they teleported forward, not having to risk landing a jump on such a snowy day. “Mavis” she called – his body flickering. “Send a flare” she spoke as they came closer to the port. Mavis nodded and threw his hand upward. A red flare came from his hand, flying high into the sky. “Lets hope that gets their attention” Eva spoke… if she could at least see the ship – she could take them all on board instantly.
She turned and looked to Skylar. They had wrapped her with a blanket, keeping her warm as her body temperature had dropped even before they left the building. “Axel, hold her tight” she spoke and placed a hand on his back. She grit her teeth as she saw a dark mass cutting through the snow in the skies. Blood spilled from her nose as she focused. Suddenly they teleported.
Blake leaned down and lifted Eva up before she could fully fall, he held her by the collar of her leather vest. He set her on her feet and then reached to Skylar. “Doctor!” he called and carried her down into the ship….

Axel gasped each time Eva teleported them, it didn’t matter how many times she did it, the feeling of his body being in one place and ripped to another made his insides feel as though they were being crushed. He looked to Eva with worried eyes, he noticed how weak she was becoming with teleporting them over the rooftops. He held Skylar close to his body, he could feel the small movement of her chest as it slightly expanded and then deflated again to her breathing, some breaths were shaky, others were almost too small to notice. He looked down to the woman in his arms, the Duke and Duchess’ daughter. When they landed on the ship he looked wide eyed to Blake whom had gripped Eva by her vest collar, holding her up to her feet roughly, and then a moment later. Skylar was pulled from his arms by the same man.
Axel looked down to his white under shirt, a bit of her blood remained on his shoulder. He turned and steadied Eva. “Thank you.” He spoke and searched her eyes. Axel carefully scooped her up into his arms. “I’ve got you, Eva.” He looked up as he felt the ship lifting into the air. He leaned against the incline that was created by the deck. His hazel eyes looked to Mavis then as he stood, staring at the two, he looked to the door where his daughter had been taken as his body flickered, fuzzy like static now. Worry filled Mavis’ eyes. Skylar appeared before him, her body wispy and blue. She hugged herself to her father, her head lay on his chest. She looked up to him and then looked to Axel before the two disappeared in a flash of blue back to the spirit world. Axel stood motionless, he held Eva to his body tightly, almost as if he was trying to protect her. He looked down to Eva for a moment before he adjusted her slightly in his arms, he was trying to make her comfortable. He carried her forward into the cabin of the ship.
Axel looked up to the wheel of the ship, he watched as Booker frantically worked the switches, the ride wasn’t the best, but Booker was doing all that he could. Skylar was really the only one that knew how to drive the ship properly. Axel stumbled and turned quickly as he fell back against the door that led down into the lower decks of the ship. He let out a groan as his back slammed harshly against the wood of the door, he gripped onto Eva and made sure not to allow her to become injured from his stumbling about. He turned just as Winslow opened the door to the lower decks. The councilmen stood before Axel for a moment. “Come on.” He spoke and motioned for Axel to follow him. “You helped save the Warden?” He asked and looked to Axel. “Rather dangerous job, the Nighthand Guild is in debt to you sir.” He spoke as he let Axel down the hallway toward the Captain’s quarters.
Axel nearly tripped at the mentioning of the Guild. He blinked several times, he looked down to Eva, to her uniform, his breath caught in his chest. His jaw fell slack. “N-Nighthand…” He nearly choked.
Winslow let out a slight chuckle as he pushed the door to the captain’s quarters open. “Welcome aboard.” He grinned, “We aren’t what the Order wants you to believe, you’ll see.”
“Eva.” Dr. Knightley stood from Skylar. Skylar lay on her bed, IVs hooked into both arms, pushing fluids into her body, a monitor was hooked to her and the slow beeping of her heart could be heard as the monitor pulsed along. It was incredible the amount of travel gear that Dr. Knightley was set up with. Neither Mavis nor Skylar told Dr. Knightley no when she asked for a piece of equipment, and this was good reason not to. “Set her here, please.” Dr. Knightley instructed and pat the bed next to Skylar.
Axel stared to the Duke’s daughter as she lay motionless. He didn’t move for a moment, he took in a breath and carefully lay Eva on the bed. He wiped away the blood from her nose, he gave her a gentle smile. “You’re strong.” He nodded, “You’ve got this, Eva.” He stepped back as Dr. Knightley pulled tools out. She began taking vitals on Eva, she listened to her heart through a stethoscope for a long moment before she hooked up an IV to her. “How is Lady Greystoke?” Axel questioned as he moved and knelt next to Skylar, Dr. Knightley had cleaned up the blood from her nose and mouth, though some trickled from her nose still. Her head lay to the side allowing the blood to drip onto the pillow beneath her head. Axel pulled his handkerchief from his back pocket and dabbed away her blood again.
“Lady Greystoke?” Winslow questioned, he rose his brow. “You mean Skylar Olyver? Our Warden?”
Axel looked up to the man, “Olyver?” He questioned. “No, she is the Duke’s daughter.”
“Is that what they told you.” Winslow chuckled and shook his head.
Dr. Knightley scribbled on her clipboard before she mixed a few things together and injected a serum into Eva to aid her in recovery from her extensive use of her magic. “Skylar is…here…” Dr. Knightley spoke, a sad undertone in her voice. “We are very lucky that Eva and Mavis did what they did. And ultimately we are lucky that you helped to save her, I am not sure how much more damage she could have taken.” She paused a moment as she looked to the soldier before her, “What did they do to her?” She asked.
Axel stared at Skylar’s pale skin, he brushed away another trickle of blood. “The Admiral used a device that syphoned her magic, I’m not sure how many times. He attached this device to her, and used this remote to shock her when she disobeyed him. If we try to remove it without a key…it will kill her…as well as with these bonds.”
Dr. Knightley furrowed her brows, she shook her head and muttered something in Elvish. She then turned back to look to Skylar, “That’s why I can’t heal her.” She spoke in an angry tone, frustrated by what happened to her Warden. She moved and knelt next to Eva, she searched over her features for a moment before she placed her hand on Eva’s forehead. Dr. Knightley shut her eyes as a green aura began to form around her hand, slowly it began to spread to Eva’s body enveloping her from head to toe until the green glow emitted from her entire being.
Axel stared to the woman as she did this, he saw her pointed ears poke out from beneath her long hair. He hadn’t seen and Elf before. There were a lot of things he didn’t even think possible, but today they were happening back to back. Too fast it seemed to comprehend. The ship shook again, Axel fell backward into the wall, the ship shook again and a loud noise was heard from above deck.
Dr. Knightley opened her eyes, the glow faded from Eva’s body. “What’s happening?” She asked.
“You’re with me.” Winslow grabbed Axel by his elbow, he ran through the halls. “Ready your gun, soldier.” He ordered as they burst through the door upon the deck. The sound of another airship could be heard, Winslow turned to see an Overseer soldier with his arm around Booker’s neck. It was as if the men had appeared out of nowhere. He watched as the second hand fell to his knees and then onto his side unconscious. Several more soldiers jumped onto the deck of the ship. “This is it, kid. Fight for what you saved.” He drew his dagger. The ship trembled slightly without a captain at the wheel to control it, the type of air ship that it was it needed attention, levers pulled and pushed, it wasn’t so much turning the wheel as adjusting to the pressure and wind. The ship was so small that changes even in the slightest could cause it to spiral out of control.
Lucas came to the deck of the ship with a crew of Nighthand Guild warriors, this brought the number up to 7 on deck. Hopefully this would be enough. The men began fighting. Winslow held his hand out, turning his enemies to ice before he slashed his sword through them, shattering the men into a thousand tiny pieces. Lucas on the other hand was highly agile, he slipped around quickly, his blade sliced through the soldiers like butter. Axel locked swords with an Overseer solder. “You traitor!” The soldier growled at him from behind his mask. “I should take you back to the Duke and see what he has done to you for what you’ve done! You’ll be skinned alive!” He shoved Axel to his back and sliced the sword down.
A flash of blue appeared and Skylar was above him, he stared as time slowed all around him, though somehow it didn’t effect him. Skylar’s body was wispy blue as she gripped onto the man’s wrist. She looked to Axel a moment, blood leaked from her nose and mouth still, she turned back and ripped the blade from his hand, she moved quickly, suddenly she was behind him and the heel of her boot landed in his back, sending him flying forward into the deck. Skylar landed on his back and shoved the sword through him, as she landed her body burst into ashes. Time suddenly sped back up and Axel found himself scrambling to his feet. He spun around and lobbed the head of a soldier off with his sword, his heart pounded within his ears. It seemed that there was no end to the soldiers as they piled onto the small vessel.
“Booker!!!!” Winslow screamed as he fought against a soldier, he pressed his hand into the man’s chest, freezing him solid. “Get up!” He called.
Booker stumbled to his feet, nearly falling over the railing as the ship began to spiral. Several soldiers fell over the edge of the ship. Lucas slid and was hanging onto the railing, his dagger fell from his hand, plummeting down toward the earth far below. Booker rushed forward and pulled a few levers and adjusted the sails before he pressed another button. The ship sped up incredibly fast. The airship that was next to them, that the Overseer’s had been jumping from was lost in their wake.
A few soldiers remained on the deck. One rushed toward the captain’s quarters. Axel rushed after him, just as the man pushed the door open to the room that Dr. Knightley had Skylar and Eva in Axel finally caught the man. He elbowed him in the back and wrestled him to the floor as he pulled the man’s pistol from the holster on his belt. He held the gun to the man’s head and pulled the trigger. Blood splattered across the wooden floor. “Don’t move.” Dr. Knightley’s voice spoke, her tone caring yet stern. Axel froze, his knees on either side of the man’s chest. He looked down to see the hilt of a dagger sticking out from his abdomen. Axel took in a sharp breath, his eyes grew wide. “Don’t move.” Dr. Knightley spoke again, her hand on his shoulder. “Try to relax.” She nodded. “You’re going to be just fine. Just relax, breathe.” She placed her hand on the hilt of the blade. “This is going to hurt, okay? I promise it’s the only thing that will.” Before Axel could say anything she slipped the blade from his flesh. Axel buckled forward, though Dr. Knightley pushed him back, moving him away from the soldier. Axel groaned in pain as he gripped onto his abdomen, blood gushed out of the puncture wound. “Relax.” Dr. Knightley spoke just as Axel passed out. She placed her hand over the wound and shut her eyes, the same green aura appeared and after just a few brief minutes she removed her hand. She looked down to him and then to the Overseer soldier on the ground, half his skull had blown to bits from the point blank shot.
“Dr. Knightley!” Blake rushed into the room, he gasped for air, he had a few surface cuts, however he was unharmed otherwise. He looked to Eva and Skylar and then to Axel on the floor. His eyes widened he stepped forward and helped the doctor to her feet. “You’re okay?” He checked her over.
“I’m fine.” Dr. Knightley lifted a towel and rubbed the blood from her hands. “He saved us…” She shook her head. “If he hadn’t come when he did…” Dr. Knightley turned and moved to Eva she looked over her vitals for a moment. “Eva, can you hear me?” She asked. “I need you to check on Skylar in the spirit world…I need to know if she is there…if…” She looked to Skylar’s pale body and took in a slow deep breath. “I can’t do anything more for her until we are back at the mansion…She is there…but hardly…” Dr. Knightley sighed softly. “Whatever they’ve done to her, I won’t know the full extent of the damage until she finally wakes…”
“She saved me…” Axel spoke, as he sat up slowly. “On the deck, when the soldiers attacked…I saw her…time…it slowed…she stopped a blade from driving into my heart…” He stood, feeling his abdomen, shock in his eyes. “I don’t know how any of this is possible…” He breathed.

“Skylar Olyver.” A deep voice spoke. “Warden. Clever. Thief. Assassin.”
Skylar sat upon a boulder, it was within a deep expanse of black void. It was cold. Everything around her was freezing cold. She looked around, trying to find the source of the voice.
“You were called many things.” The voice continued to speak. “However, what are you really?”
Skylar shivered, blood dripped from her nose. “Make this stop.” She whispered, her voice soft, weak. “Please, the pain…I’m so cold…”
Smoke filtered around her, and from the thick black smoke a figure appeared. First she could see a large span of wings, grey and ruffled, old and tattered. Then Skylar could see the red glowing eyes from beneath the thick black hood that shadowed the face of the creature before her. He held a scythe in his hands made from bones, with a purple jewel at the top. “Skylar, this all can stop, the pain, the cold. I can make it all go away.” His voice was deep and rumbling, raspy even. “You can be with your father again, away from the tortures of the world.”
Skylar scrambled to her feet as she stared at the reaper before her. “No…I can’t go….” She stumbled backward, her arms waved as she fought to balance on the edge of the boulder.
The reaper watched her as she tried to regain her balance. “It isn’t your choice, now, is it? You’ve been in power, in control, for so long.” He reached forward with a gloved hand and pushed harshly against her chest, causing her to fall backward. Skylar screamed as she fell, she shut her eyes tightly, allowing the shadows in the darkness to engulf her, the next moment she appeared on the cold ground, on her hands and knees, more blood dripped from her nose from the use of her magic. “Using your magic here, has its costs.” The reaper appeared before her, he leaned against his scythe handle. Skylar coughed, blood spattered on the ground, she felt like her body was collapsing against itself. “Skylar, all you have to do is agree to come with me. I’ll take you back to your father.”
Skylar pushed herself shakily to her feet, she drew her dagger, her brows pulled together. “I’m not going.” She said through grit teeth, blood on her lips.
The reaper chuckled, “You know, your father was just as much of a pain.” He didn’t move as he continued to lean against his scythe, “Eventually, you’ll grow tired of fighting.”
Skylar stepped forward, in a swift movement she stabbed her blade at the reaper, however she thrust through his body and tumbled to the ground. Skylar stay on her hands and knees, her eyes fluttering. She shut her eyes tightly. “Please…” She whimpered. “I can’t go, there’s too many people depending on me…I can’t leave like this…” She wiped away the blood from her nose, she drew her pistol. “Let me go!” She shot at him. The bullet flew through his body only to clank against a wall somewhere in the expanse of the blackness.
“If you will not come with me willingly, you will not like what I have to do to force you to come, Skylar.” The reaper warned. He rushed forward, his hand gripped around her throat. Skylar gripped onto his wrist. She shut her eyes tightly and melted into the shadows. She reappeared just feet away from the reaper. He turned a low snarl coming from his throat as he glared to her with his red eyes. Skylar fell to her knees, blood trickled freely from her nose now. “Just keep using your magic, Skylar. See what happens to your body.” He growled.
“No!” Out of nowhere Mavis came from the shadows and tackled the reaper to the ground. “You’re not taking her!” He snapped. He ripped the scythe from the reaper’s hands and tossed it off of the edge of the platform that they stood on. “She can’t go, not now.” He crossed his arms.
The reaper stood, the lanky creature towered over Mavis. “You’ve no choice in the matter.” The reaper spoke before he flapped his wings and flew off toward his scythe.
Mavis rushed to Skylar, her body flickered, she coughed and whimpered in pain. Her whole body ached. “You have to go back, Sky. You can’t be here…he’ll take you…” Mavis hugged his daughter to his body. “Please.” He gripped onto her tightly, suddenly she burst into ash in his arms.
**
Skylar’s eyes fluttered open, she gasped for air. Dr. Knightley stood over her body with a pen light flashing it into her eyes. “There you are.” Dr. Knightley smiled. “You scared us there for a moment.” She wiped away a bit of blood. “Stay with us, Skylar.” Dr. Knightley had just injected Skylar with adrenaline as her heart had slowed to a dangerous level, it was barely keeping her alive.
Skylar’s eyes fluttered, the world was hazy, she could hardly make out what Dr. Knightley was saying. “Wh…”
Dr. Knightley watched as Skylar tried to speak, tried to move, her body was far too weak. This worried her a great deal. “Rest. Everyone is fine.” Dr. Knightley spoke. “You’re home. Tyrin and I are running a few tests to find out what they did to you.”
Skylar looked around, her vision fading in and out, she was in the lab. Booker took her hand into his, he smiled as Dr. Knightley moved and began typing away. “We thought we lost you there for a moment, Sky.” He searched her eyes. “Don’t scare us like that okay?” He squeezed her hand.
Skylar allowed her eyes to close for a long moment before she opened them again. “Eva?” She whispered, “Where…is…she…?”
“I’ve already sent for her, Skylar.” Dr. Knightley spoke. She had send Tyrin to go find Eva and Blake to tell them that the Warden had awakened. She had been unconscious for nearly two days. Dr. Knightley changed out an IV bag and sighed softly. “It’s good to see you awake.” She nodded before she went back to her work.
Skylar blinked a few times, the spirit world, she had been stuck there since she saved Axel, unable to return to the world of the living. How many times had Dr. Knightley brought her back from the dead? Was it only this once? She reached up and placed her hand on her head, her hand was shaky. Skylar took in a slow breath as she looked around the lab once more, her vision was still a haze, her hearing muffled. She felt as though she was still dreaming…what happened to her? What was real and what was dream? She reached up and touched her neck, the device remained, her breath trembled as she looked to the bracelet upon her wrist.
“I’m still trying to figure out how to remove those…I’m sorry warden.” Dr. Knightley spoke as she continued to take notes on Skylar’s vitals. “It is a tricky contraption, and without another to practice on, I must be certain that I am correct before we try to remove it…”
Skylar pushed herself up, her body felt as though it was on fire. She grit her teeth. Booker placed his hand on her shoulder, “You should rest..” He warned. Skylar looked to him, her vision blacked out for a moment before she looked to the lab door as it opened. “Eva…” She breathed, “You’re okay…” Her eyes fluttered, as she fought to keep awake.

Blake stood on the deck of the ship. He held his head up as he watched the on coming ship. He turned and drew his blade from his back and held it loosely in his hand, the tip pointing down. Then as the soldiers came piling off the huge ship - Blake drew his blade higher. He grinned and suddenly tossed his blade into the air and held both of his hands up. His blade became enveloped in a red glow that trailed to his hands which glowed as well. He brought his hands back and thrust them forward. The blade in the air tilted and moved forward - slicing through several soldiers. He brought his hands back suddenly and then kicked forward into the air. A black and red dragon head came through the red magical hue and bit forward - grabbing a soldier and crunching. The soldier suddenly turned into red ash and the dragon slipped away back into the sword. Blake then spun swiftly - the blade turning to the side and cutting through several more soldiers. He brought his hands back in a fighting stance and the sword came back to his side, wavering slightly from side to side - ready for its next victim. Merciless…
Eva rustled during all the commotion. If you can hear me… Find Skylar Eva bit her lip and squeezed her eyes. Her body glowed bright blue and she slipped into the spirit world. She stood from her sleeping body and looked to Skylar. She held her hand forward and felt the power of the spirit world surround her. She pictured Skylar - forcing her mind to find her. She could feel all the essences of the world, millions of peoples thoughts and emotions filled her head. She grit her teeth as she couldn’t focus, a buzzing of noise filled the air.
“Skylar Olyver... Warden. Clever. Thief.Assassin”
Suddenly Eva zoned in on that voice that called Skylar’s name. Eva teleported to its position. She looked in on a glass room and placed her hand on the glass. It was freezing cold. To her touch the glass fogged over and even began to crack. Eva stepped back and looked around. “Mavis” she whispered. Just as she said his name he appeared, almost like she called upon him. “I can’t get through Mavis” she whispered and placed her hands on the glass.
“You can’t because you’re alive” he whispered and then grit his teeth.
Suddenly a body appeared next to Eva as she watched into the glass room of darkness. The Reaper that held Eva into the air in the center… Eva turned her head to see the man from the void once more. “You are learning fast” he spoke softly and then smiled. He turned his head and looked directly into her eyes. He was frozen cold, like the cracked glass before her. “I am the Outsider” he then looked back into the glass chamber. “You are my protégé” he then disappeared.
Eva’s body lifted from the bed and she rushed over to Skylar, who lay on the bed next to her. She placed her hands on her chest and felt her essence. “She’s on the cusp” she whispered and then she glowed bright blue.
Eva sat back suddenly when Skylar woke. Eva smiled and placed her hand on Skylar’s shoulder. “I’m right here” she spoke softly and nodded. “I’m okay” she moved to sit on the edge of the bed. She stayed next to Skylar the entire ride back to the guild hall. She brushed at Skylar’s hair slowly..
“I saw you with the Reaper” she whispered. “You were in this glass room, no one but the dead could enter” she spoke softly. “I had to go through millions of thoughts to find you” she chuckled. “I’m glad you’re here…I’m not ready to run a guild” she chuckled and then grew silent, her thoughts going over the Outider…
They docked at the Guildhall and Eva easily teleported Skylar and Axel to the lab. Dr. Knightley rushed in and hooked them up properly and then nodded. Blake stepped into the room and stood in between Axel and Skylar. “No one will steal her this way” he spoke and crossed his arms. He nodded as the doctor ran between the two. Eva looked to Blake and sighed deeply. “We will have to find that guy… who ever took her” she spoke and looked to the contraption around Skylar’s neck.
Eva walked over to the glass room that was blocked off, Belinda sat - still hooked up - looking to Eva. Eva tilted her head and studied the woman for a long moment. Belinda was different..her energy was calmer. “You are healed?” Eva spoke softly. Belinda looked up and nodded slowly.
“You are taller than I remember” Belinda spoke and smiled weakly. “Let me explain… what happened” Belinda stood and came to the glass. She leaned her shoulder against the glass. “Dad and I were captured… Stolen to district one.. Before we were captured - he was the rebel leader, and led the war of artifacts. To race district one to all the artifacts of magic and preserve them. Well, mom didn’t agree so much to that life. She split off with you, I stayed with dad. In district one I was kept alive as bait for dad… so that he would give up secrets and knowledge. I was able to escape but I think.. they poisoned me. Sometime during that ball I felt like I lost myself. My thoughts were racing - those thoughts were not mine, they were… not good. I frame you guys so that you would keep me away from you. If you thought you could trust me then their poison would work, I would became twisted by the thoughts they forced into my head and kill you and Skylar when you were sleeping. This was the safest way..” she spoke and nodded. “I wouldn’t let me go until I am for sure cured.. I don’t want to risk it..” Belinda spoke and then looked down slightly.
Eva took in a deep breath. Her family split? That made sense… the last time she had seen her father was ages ago, and she never really knew why. Her mother said that he had died.. maybe he did.. maybe he didn’t… “So you’ve escaped… you know a way back in, don’t you?” she spoke softly. Belinda’s eyes grew wide. “Why would you want to go into District One?” she spoke hushed. “We want to take them out.. for once and for all” Eva spoke and crossed her arms. Belinda shook her head and chuckled. “Maybe you’re more like father than I am” Belinda spoke and sighed. “Yes.. I do know a way.. but first.. you have to get that choker off of Skylar” she pointed to Skylar who rest on the bed. “There is a way. It is a electrode devices that pulses constantly to numb the cells that product our magic. If you can create a device to oppose the exact frequency of the device you can deactivate it and remove it safely” she spoke and nodded. “I saw once of the captors make it out of magnets and sheet metal. A genius that one..” she chuckled and nodded. “You should get to it..” Belinda spoke and then sat back at her bed.
Eva turned and went over to Dr.Knightley and relayed the message. Dr. Knightley walked over to Skyler and observed the choker. “I’ll have to verify that.. then I’ll see about making the device..” she spoke and then stepped away to retrieve instruments. Eva then turned to Skylar and sat down next to her.
“You doing okay?” she spoke and smiled weakly. “You’ve been in and out of the spirit world.. on the cusp of death. That eerie feeling in that world makes me a little sick to my stomach.. I’m just glad you’re not stuck there. Not many people can say they’ve died and come back that many times” she chuckled and then sighed. “It makes me think of this… void world I keep entering. The in between of worlds. There is a guy there.. his name is the Outsider, have you ever heard of him? He is some kind of god, I’m not sure…”

Skylar watched as Eva spoke to Belinda behind the glass holding room. It was a room used as containment for diseases that Dr. Knightley didn’t understand, however, this case was just as useful. Her vision blurred as she watched Eva speak to Dr. Knightley. Booker held her shoulder gently, his eyes full of concern for her.
Dr. Knightley smiled when Eva finished explaining the contraption that was locked around the warden’s neck. “I have an idea, I should be able to get it off.” She said as she went to her table and began drawing up ideas.
Skylar looked to Eva as she approached and asked if she was doing okay. She searched over Eva’s expression as she spoke, “How many times?” She whispered, she didn’t know. She couldn’t remember the Reaper. “I can’t remember it…” She looked down and shook her head slightly. She looked to the cuffs on her wrists and sighed. When Eva spoke of the Outsider Skylar looked to her, her expression worried. “I know of him.” She gave a nod, “Actually.” She stood and waivered slightly, her vision blurred. She took in a quick breath as she nearly fell back onto the bed. She grit her teeth, her body was still weak from the damage Elias had caused. Skylar stared to the ceiling for a long moment as her eyes focused. “I have a journal, it belonged to my great, great grandfather. The Outsider hasn’t made himself visible to anyone in over 100 years.” Skylar took in a breath she looked to Booker whom was sitting down at one of the desks. “Booker.” She called him, he looked to her and smiled slightly before he came to her side. “Can you get something for me? There is a book, it is in my desk, it has the seal of the Guild on the outside of it. It has a latch, I have the key.” Skylar watched as Booker left the room. She reached into one of her pouches on her thigh and pulled a small golden key, it was attached to a few other keys.
Skylar looked back to Eva as she relaxed back onto the bed. “As lore states, thousands of years ago, he was a man, the Outsider. He was young when he died, it was at the hand of something that is much like the Order is today, they were afraid of magic back then too. Magic was punishable by death long ago as well, and he showed no fear of dying. I’ve never seen him, but from reading the journal my great, great grandfather spoke of the Outsider and his black eyes. It’s said that he appears just as he did shortly before he died.” Skylar paused for a moment, her vision was caving in, she blinked a few times and took in a small breath. “This world, this void you speak of. That is his world now. He controls it, every aspect of it. He only shows himself to very special people.” Skylar looked over Eva for a moment, a soft smile on her lips. “He is neither an angel, nor a demon. He is something of both. If he has shown himself to you, Eva, he will be of great help with your powers. I can promise you that.” She turned as the door opened and Booker returned with the journal. “Thank you Booker.”
Booker smiled as he set the book in her lap. “Of course, Sky. Are you feeling okay?” He asked, “You’re still so pale…” He noted.
Skylar gave a gentle smile, “I’m alright.” She placed the key into the slot and turned it, the mechanism clicked and the latch fell away. Skylar ran her fingertips over the metal seal of the guild before she opened the book. “This journal has been passed down through the generations of the Wardens, every Warden has had this book and each Warden after me will have this book. It is intended to help guide the next Warden.” Skylar flipped through the pages as she spoke the old papers were soft against her fingertips. She stopped on a page where her great, great grandfather had drawn the Outsider. Skylar turned the book slightly, “This is him, right?” She asked. “He hasn’t changed, no doubt.” She let out a soft laugh. “I’ve read these pages so many times, I remember I used to sit in the middle of my father’s study on the floor with this book when I was a child. I would be in the middle of reading it and he would slip it away from me, he would replace it with a child’s book and tell me my mother would have his head if she saw what I was reading.” She laughed, a smile curved up the edge of her lips.
Skylar stared at the pages, the sketches of the Outsider with remarks written in. “He is a God, really, if you think about it.” She looked to Eva. “He can give you power, or enhance the powers that you already have. He will guide you, but he won’t.” She paused and let out a laugh, “He is a bit of a trickster, at least he was with my ancestor. He would offer something, but take it away, he would tell him that he wasn’t ready yet.” Skylar flipped through the pages, “You don’t need to be afraid of him, at least I can give you that comfort…” She looked to Eva once more. “He’ll help you, if he can, he’ll remind you of things that you’ve forgotten.”
“Skylar.” Dr. Knightley stood with a small box like device. “Can I interrupt you two for a moment?”
Skylar looked to Dr. Knightley and then to Eva. “Here.” She smiled, “It would do you good to look through this book.” She held the book to Eva and then handed her the small golden key. “When you’re done, lock it back up.” She gave a nod. “There are things in there that the entire guild does not need to know.” Her voice was hushed. “But the things in there could help you to better understand what is happening to you.”
Dr. Knightley gave a nod as she set the small box in Skylar’s hands. “Hold onto this.” She spoke, she then took in a breath. “I’m going to press this button, and hopefully it will emit the proper frequency and the device around your neck will fall off.”
“Hopefully?” Skylar asked, her brows drew together. “What happens if this doesn’t work?”
Dr. Knightley took in a breath, “I am not sure, but with all the research that I have currently, this is the closest I can get.” She stared at her warden for a long moment. “Whenever you’re ready, just press that button.” She stared at the device that Skylar held in her hands for a moment before she looked to the device around Skylar’s neck.
Skylar looked to the small cube, it didn’t weigh much. She lifted it and inspected it for a moment before she pressed the button on the side of the device. The room was silent as she did this. Skylar looked to Dr. Knightley, “Is it supposed to do something?” She asked softly. “I don’t feel any--….” Skylar grit her teeth, her body tensed. The cube fell from her hands as she gripped at the device around her neck. “St-stop….it….” She cried her voice filled with pain.
Dr. Knightley rushed to the device that fell to the floor, she lifted it and pressed the button, her eyes wide. She watched as Skylar’s body relaxed. “Warden…I….” She stepped to her side. “I’m terribly sorry. I didn’t realize it would react like that…”
Skylar’s chest heaved as she gripped the edges of the bed. She stared up to Dr. Knightley for a long moment, pain rushed through her body. She winced as she remembered the painful feeling of the needle slicing into her neck to draw out her magic. “There has to be something you can do to get this thing off of me.” She breathed.
“I can.” Tyrin spoke from Dr. Knightley’s desk. She looked over all of the paperwork. “At least I can try. Dr. Knightley, this is more mechanical than anything, magic will not be of help here.” She pulled the small box from the doctor’s hands and inspected it. “I’ll get you out of this, Skylar.” She gave a nod before she stepped out of the lab.
Skylar took in small breaths as she lay on the exam bed. She stared up at the ceiling as she listened to her heard pound between her ears. A sound that she was all too familiar with since Elias had taken her. She pushed herself up and stumbled slightly.
“Warden.” Dr. Knightley steadied her. “You need to lay down, your body is weak from what that soldier did to you…you need to rest until we can get this device off of you.”
Skylar looked to Dr. Knightley, her body burned as she used her muscles. “I can’t just lay here.” She spoke softly. “I need to figure out who Elias is…what all of this was…how he got into my bedroom and the guards outside didn’t even notice him. How does that happen?” She took a step and stumbled.
Booker rushed over and scooped her up into his arms. “Right now, you need to focus on yourself, Sky.” He searched her eyes. “Right now, you are of no use until you are healed.” He set her back down on the bed. “Let Dr. Knightley do her tests, let Tyrin help get the device from around your neck.”
Skylar took in a slow deep breath before she gave a nod. They were right. She wasn’t helping at all, if anything her fighting against how weak she had become was causing more damage. Skylar relaxed into the bed as she looked around the lab. She looked to the cuffs around her wrists and inspected them, the technology behind the cuffs was certainly advanced. She wondered what was keeping them around her wrists, there wasn’t a latch, nor a key hole. Was the device around her neck the same? If there was a key hole this would all be over. A key is easy enough to fabricate. Skylar raised her fingers to the device on her neck, she ran her fingertips along the smooth metal, she stopped at the jewel that was on the front of the device. Skylar sighed softly as she lay her head back and relaxed. “I can’t get over how weak I feel…” She whispered softly. Her arms felt like sandbags, her body felt as though it was under a huge heavy blanket. What did Elias really do? What damage happened when he stole her magic?

Eva looked to the book and then back to Skylar as she spoke. “Yeah.. that’s him, he looks exactly the same. Maybe his eyes have a more tired look, big circles about them.. but that’s him” she spoke softly. “I feel that way, yes. Like he is here to help me… but then he gets so mad sometimes. He’s aggressive” she shut her eyes and remembered him yelling at her. I chose you! … You are not ready… he shouted those words with such hate. She wondered what this Outsider was really up to… Why her, anyways?
“Hm.. I just wish I knew why. I don’t deserve any of this, nor do I really want it..” she whispered and then stood up with the book in her hands. “As your understudy, I will keep the secrets safe. Thank you for this..” she held the book to her chest and bowed her head slightly.
Eva watched as Dr. Knightley attempted to remove the neck piece. She cringed slightly as it shocked Skylar. Eva gripped the book and held her breath until the moment ended. She turned her head and the world froze. Dr. Knightley was leaning over with the remote in her hand - handing it to Tyrin. Booker stood with Skylar in his arms, his face full of anger as he had watched her suffer. Blake stood at the door, leaning against the frame with a neutral expression.
The outside appeared next to Skylar, he was leaning slightly and looking at her. “Weakness is good” he spoke and turned to look at Eva. “Weakness is what will drive you to strength. Weakness is what I yearn for. Soon you will understand what that is…” he spoke and then disappeared. He reappeared by the glass where Belinda stood, staring into the lab. “You will have to strike down those you love… some day” he spoke and then appeared next to Eva. “I have a gift for you” he spoke and then pulled something from behind his back. It was a heart that had a small glass pane in the center, looking into a set of gears that moved slowly with each beat. “They say the heart is where a spirit lives” he handed her the heart. Then he disappeared.
Eva stood in the silence of time as it stood still. He held the heart in her hand – it was warm, and it slowly beat in her grip. The gears glowed a slight red and Eva stared to the heart – she gave it a slight squeeze, the fleshy material pushed against her fingers, like a muscle fighting back. A voice came from the center of the heart, an oddly familiar voice. “I knew I would see you again…” her mothers voice spoke. “I will guide you, I will open the secrets of the world to you. You may call for me in moments of need.. I have always been there… just know I am not my once self, but yet I am partially at the same time…” her voice whispered. “Hold me to see the truth” she spoke again.
Eva held the heart in one hand and closed her eyes, squeezing slightly. When she opened her eyes she stood in a brightly lit room. Their old house… her mother and father were yelling at each other. The image played before her… Eva’s younger self, maybe 4 or 5, stood by the wall, her older sister Belinda.. 15 or 16, was by the door – anger across her face. Her father was in his uniform, his gun blade on his hip – he had just come home from a mission.
“He was out fighting the worlds battles… all I wanted was for him to stay home… stay home and be with you, your sister.. with me… but he was determined, the man with such a heart. When finally I told him to make his choice – he told me he loved me… for the last time” her father stormed out of the house, Belinda tailing behind him. Eva ran to her mothers legs and clasped on tight. Her mother crumbled to the ground and held Eva close – sobbing heavily.
“Neither of us were the bad guy.. as much as I would have liked it to go another way… you father was destined to lead the war against the districts..and he did. In the midst of the worst of it – he was captured, and now he resides as a magic dispenser..” the image of the scene disappeared and Eva remained in the lab. “This is my secret, that I should have told you” she whispered.
“No one can see me unless you will them to. You can hold me in public, and until you say – My heart is for you to see – the relic in which I rest will appear for whomever you command” Then time began once again, the heart pulsing slowly in her hand. She squeezed the heart slightly as she looked to Booker, who laid Skylar down onto the bed. “Broken by death. Determined to replace the memories with a familiar face… Unrequited love. Lost eternally to his unwilling nature…”
Eva felt a slight pit in her stomach and she turned it to Blake, who called Booker over to step outside. “Crimson blood is stained upon his pale hands, he would wash them with bleach every hour…”
She lowered her head and then looked to Dr. Knightley… a gentle squeeze.
“She sings of old elven songs, longing for the day to return home. Bound to the first Warden as a slave, now willingly yet still trapped. “
Eva hid her eyes from the Doctor.. A slave? How long has the doctor worked for the guild? She remembered hearing old stories of Elves being slaves, bound by a spell of magic. Was the doctor truly still trapped here? The heart… surely it didn’t lie…
Eva looked to the heart and it disappeared. “Call to me when you need…”
Blake pulled Booker to the side of the room. “The last thing the Warden needs is to be babied… allow her the dignity… she is still our leader. She will need to present her self as strong, useful.. if she feels any less than that then her strength as our Warden will dwindle, even after she is healed. Put your emotions aside, allow Skylar to be herself… you would not appreciate someone treating you as if you were a baby. Even if you are…” Blake then turned and left the room, his steps leading him away.
Eva stepped back over to Skylar and smiled weakly. “This will be over soon…” she spoke and then slipped away from the room. She came back shortly with a platter of food. Cheeses and veggies, she sat down next to Skylar and held the plate out next to her. “You should eat something” she spoke and plucked a small slice of cheese off of the plate.
“I have a feeling Tyrin will be able to get this off your neck…” she smiled hopefully. “Once you are well… we will have to take out Elias… I think if we train together and become a good team – with the combination of time manipulation and my teleportation skills… we could easily do anything” she smiled and held a pretzel out for her.

Booker stood with his arms crossed, he stared out over the district. Blake was right. He was letting his emotions guide him. He had been allowed to care for Skylar for so long, it was hard not to take care of her like he did when Mavis was alive. He needed to help her regain her strength, to help her rule as the Warden…
**
Skylar looked to Eva as she stepped over to her, she had a soft smile on her lips. “I am sure Tyrin can help, she’s a smart doctor.” She smiled at the end of Eva’s speaking and took the pretzel from her hand. “I think you are right, Eva.” She crunched on the pretzel for a moment before she moved her eyes back to her. “I chose you for a reason.” She gave a nod. “I know your capabilities, and with mine together we can be an unstoppable force. We can save lives, help the districts, restore the cities.” She munched on a few of the veggies and the cheeses. Skylar winced slightly, the device around her neck was uncomfortable, tight. She reached her hand up to it for a moment before the uncomfortable feeling passed. “We will make a great team, Eva.” She nodded and looked into Eva’s eyes. “I’m really glad that I came into your bakery, I had mixed feelings about it at the time. We had just stolen the jewel, and I knew it wasn’t a good idea. But, something told me to do it. I’m glad that I did.” She ate a few more things off of the plate, her hands were shaky. “Maybe this feeling I had then, when I first met you, maybe it was because of the Outsider? Maybe he guided me to you? To save you from District 2….” She pondered. “My ancestors mention strange things like that happening from an influence of the Outsider.” She gave a nod then let out a laugh, “It’s interesting, the things that the Outsider can make someone do, without even realizing it fully.”
Skylar paused a moment as she looked to Eva she turned her head to see Tyrin coming back into the room with a new device in her hands. It was round and had nubs sticking out of it, a key was pushed into the side of it and a small window was open to the working gears inside that were still for the moment. “Warden.” Tyrin said with a smile on her lips. “I just need to run a few tests so that I am certain of this device, but I am very confident that it will help me to remove the devices from your neck and wrists.”
Skylar gave a nod and a smile, “Thank you, Tyrin.” She spoke as she watched Tyrin pull a few things from the drawer next to the bed she lay on. She pulled out a few electrodes and hooked them up to places on Skylar’s arms near the cuffs and on her neck, chest and back. The lines hung from her body and ran along the floor to the computer which Tyrin began typing at. She drew her brows together as she looked at the results, analyzing it. “How does it look?” Skylar asked, observing the contorted expression on the doctor’s face.
Tyrin looked to Skylar just as a wave of shocks shot into her body, Skylar fell from the bed the tray of food that was mostly eaten clattered to the floor with her. “Warden!” Tyrin gasped, her eyes wide. She turned the key on the device, nothing. Tyrin turned the key back and stuffed the ball into the pocket of her doctor’s coat before she grabbed Skylar under her arms. She groaned slightly as she pulled Skylar along the floor, the wires tugged at the computer and ripped from the electrode pads that were stuck to Skylar’s skin. She pulled Skylar into the room that was made of glass, much like the one that Belinda was quarantined to. Tyrin moved quickly as she left Skylar laying in the middle of the floor, she ran to a computer in the room. An alarm sounded and a red light began to flash as Tyrin typed quickly. Skylar screamed in pain from the waves of shocks that ran through her body. The door to the glass room sealed shut, locking the two inside. Tyrin stayed at the computer typing away, she looked with a worried expression to Skylar, blood leaked from her nose, she had curled into the fetal position. Skylar was pulling at the device around her neck as she cried out. Then, suddenly, everything fell silent. Tyrin rushed to Skylar’s side as her body relaxed, tears rolled over her cheeks. “Warden?” Tyrin asked, Skylar’s eyes fluttered. “Warden are you with me?” She grit her teeth as she stood and ran to a medical cabinet. Tyrin drew a murky liquid into a syringe and ran to Skylar’s side. “You’re not going to do this to me, Skylar.” Tyrin spoke, her brows pulled together as she grabbed Skylar’s limp arm and found her vein before she injected the liquid into her arm.
**
“We meet again.” The Reaper stood, leaning against his scythe. “When will you finally give in, Skylar? How much pain do you have to endure before you allow me to take your soul?”
Skylar pulled her pistol. “I’m not going anywhere.” She shot at him, he disappeared and reappeared behind her. Skylar spun around, she drew her dagger into her other hand. She sliced at him, cutting through only air as he disappeared again.
“You are a feisty one.” The Reaper chuckled. Skylar spun around just as his scythe came down upon her. She blocked it with her dagger, her arms trembled against the Reaper’s strength. “You’re not strong enough here, warden.” He pushed down harder against her. Skylar grit her teeth, she melted into the shadows and appeared behind him. Blood dripped from her nose as she ran toward him, she leaped into the air and brought her dagger down into his chest, slicing through the space between his neck and collarbone. The Reaper shrieked as he grabbed her by her throat and lifted her into the air. “You will come with me.” He snarled his cloak had fallen away from his face. He had short white hair and pale skin, the red glow from his eyes had disintegrated into a black void that was soulless and horrifying.
Skylar kicked against his chest, she then pulled the trigger of her pistol again. Black blood splattered on the ground as the Reaper dropped her. He groaned and stumbled slightly. “There is too much resting upon my shoulders for me to come with you.” She turned and ran, trying to find a way out of the endless void that the reaper trapped her in.
The Reaper appeared before her and gripped her throat again, this time he ripped her pistol and dagger from her grip. Skylar kicked against him and disappeared into the shadows once more. Appearing on her hands and knees just a few feet from him. Blood came from her mouth and nose now. “When will you learn that your magic only hurts you here?” The Reaper chuckled before he swung his scythe at her once more.
Skylar looked up and just as the scythe was about to hit her, a flash of white light blinded her.
**
Tyrin worked frantically as Skylar lay unconscious. She turned the key on the device that she created and wrapped Skylar’s lifeless fingers around it. “Come on. Come on.” She spoke as she stared to the devices.
“Tyrin, let me in.” Dr. Knightley tapped on the glass. “I can help you.”
Tyrin shook her head. “No, if I open the door whatever frequency that soldier is using will continue to shock her. He has control of this device again. I can’t open the door.” She turned back to Skylar. “Come on, Skylar.” She gripped onto her cold hands. “Come on.” She could feel the device vibrating slightly as the gears turned about within the ball.
“You’re going to kill her!” Booker called, he hit the glass hard, though it didn’t crack. “Tyrin let Dr. Knightley help!” He had ran into the lab at the sound of the alarm, worried that something was happening.
“Get out of my lab, Booker.” Dr. Knightley growled at him. “You’ll hurt her even more with the way you’re acting. Out!” She turned back to the glass. “Tyrin, let me help you. Tell me what to do. Tell me what’s going on, Tyrin.” She called, her eyes full of worry. “Is she breathing?” She questioned, her hands against the glass. She couldn’t see Skylar very well with the way that Tyrin was kneeling next to her. She could see Skylar’s motionless feet and legs, that was it.
“Don’t worry Dr. Knightley, I can handle this.” Tyrin turned and gave the doctor a nod. “I gave her the adrenaline. She has a pulse, she is breathing, she is holding on. Just give me a moment.” She turned her attention back to the device the she squeezed against Skylar’s hands. “Come on, Sky. Don’t let us down like this.” She whispered, “We need you here with us. Come on.” A click sounded in the room, Tyrin grinned as she saw the cuffs release and fall from Skylar’s wrists, she looked to the choker and a few moments later the same happened. Tyrin jumped up instantly and ran to the computer, she punched in several commands, the alarm sounded once more and the door to the room unsealed. Dr. Knightley rushed in and knelt next to Skylar. She looked to Skylar’s neck and wrists, her skin was broken and bloody from the device. She inspected the site where the needle was used to withdraw her magic, she could still see the site where Elias pushed the thick needle into her neck. Tyrin and Dr. Knightley lifted Skylar and carefully brought her back out to her bed. “Fantastic job, Tyrin.” Dr. Knightley hugged her happily, a huge grin on her face.
Tyrin laughed and smiled as well, she looked to the warden as she moved to the desk and drew another syringe. “Come on, Sky.” She spoke as she injected it into her arm. “Come on.” She looked to Dr. Knightley. “How much have you been giving her to bring her back?”
“Only 5 milliliters or so, 8 at the most. Last time I had to give her 8 to wake her.” Dr. Knightley hooked a few machines up to Skylar testing her vitals and checking her over.
Tyrin stared at Skylar, she bit her lip. “I’ve given her 30….” She whispered.
Dr. Knightley looked to Tyrin with wide eyes. “And she hasn’t responded?” She ran around the table frantically and drew a vial of something before she injected it into Skylar. Skylar’s face contorted, her breath caught in her chest, her hands balled into fists. “Come on.”
**
Skylar gasped as she gripped onto the Reaper’s arm. Her legs dangled limply toward the ground. Her grip was weak. “Don’t bother running from a Reaper, you’ll just be tired by the end of it.” He growled at her, his black eyes full of hate. Skylar’s eyes fluttered, her body flickered and fell from his grasp. “What…” He drew his brows together. He knelt down next to her and tried to grasp a hold of her again to lift her, his hand went through her body. “Impossible…how are you doing this?!” He snapped.
“You’ll leave her be.” A voice came from the darkness. An arrow suck into the reaper whom snarled and stood. Then the reaper suddenly disappeared into the shadows. Skylar felt her body lifted, the arms around her were warm. She looked up to see a man with a grey and white beard that was neatly kept. He wore an old worn cloak that was dark grey. She looked to the hawk that rest upon his shoulder. “You’ve too much to do, Skylar.” He said with a loving tone. “You need to go back.” He stopped at the edge of the huge floating boulder. “Take care of the guild young one.” He set her down on the edge of the rock before he hugged her tightly. “It is so great to see you all grown up.” He smiled and brushed tears from her cheeks before he gave a nod. “You must go.” He then shoved her from the boulder.
Skylar stared up at the man as he looked down to her from the boulder, suddenly a bright flash came again, blinding her.
**
Skylar gasped as she sat up, the machines began to beep at an alarming rate. Her eyes were wide. She jumped up out of the bed so quickly that the cords hooked to her ripped off. She stumbled and fell against Tyrin’s chest. Tyrin hugged Skylar to her. “Hey. Hey, you’re safe….” Tyrin gripped onto the warden tightly. “You’re safe, breathe.” She walked Skylar back slowly and helped her onto the bed. Tyrin smiled as she checked over her bandages that she had placed around Skylar’s neck and wrists. “You’re free.” She looked to Eva and grinned a moment. “Skylar, you should rest in your own room, it’ll help you to calm down. Eva, I want you to stay with her, okay?”
“What happened? Where….where…I…I saw my grandfather…I…what’s going on…” Her eyes fluttered, her pulse was racing about, her heart felt like it was going to leap from her chest. “Eva…?” She breathed, she looked to Eva with frightened eyes.
“Come on.” Tyrin spoke as she wrapped her arm around Skylar’s waist to steady her. “Let’s get you somewhere more comfortable okay? I’ll stay in your study and monitor you from there. You’re okay.” Tyrin had a caring voice as she helped Skylar. “Here Eva.” She gave a gentle smile. “Can you help Skylar to her room? I need to gather a few things, I’ll be right up.”
Skylar leaned heavily against Eva. Her body trembled. “Eva I’m sorry…” Her eyes fluttered. One Tyrin gathered the items she led Eva and Skylar up to the warden’s chambers. Skylar nearly fell several times, her body was incredibly weak. It was late enough at night that the guild members were asleep, no wandering eyes to catch the warden in such a weak state.
Tyrin hooked a few things up to Skylar once she lay on her bed. “There.” She gave a gentle smile and clicked a few things on a tablet that she held in her hands. “I’ll keep an eye on you.” She then looked to Eva. “Anything strange happens let me know.” Tyrin turned as someone knocked at the door. “Ah, perfect timing.” She smiled she went to the door.
Skylar stared at Eva her breathing was shallow. “I saw my grandfather…” She whispered. “The Reaper…” She breathed.
Tyrin came into the room with a platter that held two plates of food, “Here.” She set the plate on the stand next to the bed. “Both of you eat.” She nodded. “Eva, anything happens, you call me.” She pulled a small box from her pocket, it was a remote with a red button. She handed it to Eva and smiled, “Push that button and I’ll come.” She then left.
Skylar stared at Eva for a long moment, her body trembled, she was cold, her eyes fluttered. “I’ve never felt so strange…” She whispered.

[Raven]
Eva looked to Skylar who was resting on her bed. She released a deep sigh, her thoughts rolling over the past few days. So much had happened. While she was growing in her power and abilities – she felt as if she stood and watched through that glass panel – staring to the reaper who threatened to rip away Skylar’s soul…
Eva placed her hands on the balcony rails and looked out into the dark night. There was a strong gust that pushed against her hair and brought upon a chill to her skin. Eva turned and rubbed her arms with her hands, her lower back leaning against the rail. The air grew colder and colder by the second… Eva turned and looked to the sky – the moon light shedding through the thick clouds. Thick snow came from the sky, the wind pushing it at an angle. Eva stepped back as she felt the wind grow stronger – throwing snow into the bedroom.
She glanced up and then ducked suddenly. A black figure came flying through the air – directly into the bedroom. The figure landed with a loud thud. Two large dark wings spread out and flapped heavily – folding it close to his body. He slowly turned – the chains about his body rattling to his steps. His huge cloak moved with some sort of magic, wavering and slipping around with his movements. The reaper held his hand out and a large scythe formed in his hand.
Eva looked to Skylar and rushed to her side. “You can’t be in this world” she spoke and shook her head. The reaper lifted his head – his glowing red eyes appearing through the darkness of his hood. He held the scythe then with two hands and shook his head. “If you get in my way… I will end you” he spoke with a distorted voice. Eva gripped her fist and shook her head. Eva moved her hand to reach to Skylar – to teleport away.
The reaper suddenly moved with extreme speed and the scythe stuck into Eva’s chest and lifted her into the air. He shoved the scythe and it pierced through her body with ease. Slowly her body slipped to the base of the scythe’s blade. Her arms fell outward, her chest rising. She choked on the blood that spilled into her mouth. The reaper held her high in the air for a long moment and then suddenly pulled the scythe out – her body hitting the floor with a thud of motionless death. Blood filled the carpet and rugs, spilling across the room.
“NOO!!!” A thunderous voice screamed. The outsider appeared – he stood before Eva’s dead body. “You have no idea what you have done!” he cried out and shook his head. He stood with his fists closed tightly, his body shuddering with anger. “You will pay for this” he spoke through angry teeth. The reaper looked to the Outsider and the hood fell from his face. He was very pale, his bones seem to almost poke through his skin. The robe fell to ashes to the ground, revealing him in a well decorated dark armor suite. His shoulder pads glowed blue. His chest had a black skull crest in the center that shielded his ribs. His huge belt had several tiny skulls dangling off of it. Then his black plated pants and grieves layered onto each other perfectly. He held his Scythe and nodded his head slowly to the Outsider.
The Outsider’s body lifted into the air as he floated, he shot forward and pulsed a huge blast of purple matter - sending the reaper flying backwards. The reaper gathered his step and thrust forward with his wings. He pushed the outsider out the window and they flew down to the bottom. When they hit the ground the outsider was gone – he had teleported to above the reaper. He gripped the reaper’s shoulder pad and threw him into the air. A blast of energy shot into the reaper’s chest. They landed back on the balcony.
The entire building began to shake as the Outsider stood with his hands outward – fingers gripping the air. Then the Outsider gathered his energy and blasted the Reaper. The Reaper slammed against the wall, his Scythe clattering onto the ground in a rush of power. The Outsider stood and lifted the reaper up with his hand. “You will pay” he grit his teeth…

Skylar relaxed into the pillows of her bed, her eyes fluttered as she took in small breaths. Sleep overtook her easily in the silent room, though when Eva opened the balcony doors her eyes opened once more to the rush of cold air. Skylar sat up slowly as she looked to the snowflakes that filtered into her room. “Eva, it’s cold….you should come in.” Skylar whispered, her body shuddered. A moment later the Reaper landed. Just as fast as the Reaper could land everything was set into motion. Skylar tried to stop time, though, it seemed as though her magic was useless. She watched as the Reaper’s scythe sliced into Eva’s body, blood gushed from her. “Eva!!!” Skylar screamed as she rushed forward. She turned Eva to her back, “Eva…no…” She blinked back tears. She looked up to the fight that was occurring. Anger boiled in her veins, Eva hadn’t deserved that. She was the last of the light Skylar had seen in this world, one of the few people that generally believed in good.
Skylar’s body trembled as she lay Eva’s body gently on the ground, she pushed Eva’s eyelids shut. “I’m sorry…” She whispered, her voice quivering. It was then that the Outsider and the Reaper came flying back into the room, the Outsider was really having his hand at the Reaper for what he did, and for good reason. Skylar stood as the Reaper’s scythe clattered to the floor, she rushed forward and gripped onto the blade. A wave of energy rushed through the air, causing a burst of air to come from her body.
The Outsider, whom held the Reaper by his throat paused, his black eyes moved to Skylar. The Reaper stopped fighting as well, he stood still as the Outsider released him. “You…you’re not supposed to be able to hold that…” The Reaper spoke, his eyes full of shock.
Skylar rushed forward, “You’re not supposed to kill anyone either!” She snapped as she swung the scythe at him. The Reaper ducked out of the way and gripped onto the neck of the scythe. Another burst of energy blasted through the room, causing the building to tremble this time. Skylar fought against his grip, her eyes became a burning fiery red, “I’ll fucking kill you!” She screamed, “Eva didn’t deserve this! She didn’t deserve it! You wanted me!” She swung at him landing a hard right hook against his jaw.
The Outsider began to chuckle as he watched Skylar punch the baffled Reaper. “Funny, isn’t it? The events that are thrown at us? You were going to kill your only successor.” He smirked. “Don’t worry, since you killed my protégé I have no choice but to fix this mess that you’ve created, Remi.”
Skylar punched the Reaper again, he released the scythe from his grasp as she pulled on it. Skylar lifted the scythe up to slice it into his body just as the Outsider grasped her shoulder. She gasped as his hand pushed into her body, she couldn’t breathe, her entire body felt as though it was filling with burning hot lava. “You are only going to do this just this one time, Skylar Olyver, and only because I am allowing you to do so.” The Outsider’s hand pushed further into her chest, his arm began to disappear into her body. She looked to him with frightened eyes as his body melded into her own. Her eyes flashed black and she looked to the Reaper, now controlled by the Outsider. “I’ll get her off of your list, Remi, just don’t forget to train her.” Her voice was distorted by the Outsider’s, a mixture of his and Skylar’s voice. With that the world trembled around the two. Skylar turned as the walls of the building began to collapse inward as the world folded in on itself.
The world of the void was all that was left, she stood on a section of wooden flooring from her room. The Outsider pushed her forward, the world spun around him, Skylar’s breaths were heavy, blood began to drip from her nose. Rocks lifted upward, creating a jagged path through the void world, memories began to rush by as the Outsider pushed Skylar into a sprint. All of Skylar’s memories, rewinding through time, rushing back through the past four years of her life. The void world around Skylar began to build rather hastily, suddenly Skylar’s old room stood around her. The Outsider pulled from her body, stepping back from her. Skylar gasped for air as she fell forward onto her bed, she trembled, blood dripped from her nose as the Outsider turned her to her back. He stood over her with his black eyes. “You will remember, but you will not remember, just as I am here but I am not here.” He spoke and with that, he was gone.
Skylar woke the next morning, she sat up slowly and looked around her room, the sun peered in from the warm outside of summer. She reached up and brushed at the dried blood on her face, her brows tucked together for a moment as she tried to remember the crazy dream. The man with the black eyes, who was he really? She shook her head and stood, Skylar stepped to her wardrobe and pulled open the doors. She held her hand to her head and winced slightly for a moment before she shook her head and pulled her clothing from her closet.
“Sky?” Her father’s voice. Mavis came into the room with a smile on his lips, though it washed away quickly when he saw the dried blood on her face. “What happened?” He pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and brushed the blood away.
“I don’t know, I had a bad dream I guess.” Skylar looked up to her father.
He gave a smile and pulled her into a long embrace before he kissed her forehead. “I’m glad you’re okay.” He spoke softly. He then crossed his arms as he stepped back, “Today I have a meeting with Ainsley, it is a top tier meeting, I would like you to come, I believe that getting in on some of these things would be beneficial for you, as someday you will be warden, Skylar.”
Skylar looked to her father and gave a nod, “Of course father. Just like the council meetings?”
Mavis nodded, “Yes, except it will just be you, Ainsley and I. He said he had something very important to discuss.” He turned, “Sundown, my office.” He then left the room.
Skylar sighed softly, her father was a busy man. Arranging meetings with the Rebels, ensuring that people in the Districts didn’t go without food. Helping keep the Overseer Soldiers from destroying the cities. He had a lot on his plate. Skylar pulled on her clothing, her usual black knee high boots, with her black pants, her black under shirt and her deep blue jacket that hung down toward the ground in a noble coat style. She wore her scarf with the golden accents around her neck as well. Just before she left her room she attached her dagger and her pistol to her thighs. Skylar walked down the hall toward the practice rooms. These were rooms that were designed for the guild members to hone in on their magic and talents. Skylar stepped inside one of the rooms and began working on her precision with her dagger. Her moves were fluid and seemed effortless, at this point in her life she was beginning to become a master of her blade, though, she still had more to learn. Skylar vanished into the shadows and appeared behind the simulator, she sliced its throat which caused the man to melt away into ashes.

Eva stood in the center of the void, her body flickering blue. She held her hands up and then spun around. “Outsider?” she questioned, her voice echoing in the darkness around her. She walked for a bit, rocks gathering beneath her feet. She came to a floating rock and stared to the center piece. It was a statue where Eva was lifted in the air, arms slack back, chest pierced by the scythe, eyes full of fear and pain. On the bottom it said “Rest In Peace.” Eva stood before the stone statue of her own death for a long moment. She leaned down and picked up a note that was tacked to the side.
“You tried.”
A wind picked up and took the note away, flipping and flying into the distance. Eva turned and the Outsider stood behind her. “That wasn’t supposed to happen” he spoke softly. Next to Eva – Mavis appeared, in his spirit form. “But it did” he continued and nodded to Mavis. Mavis looked to the statue and placed his hand upon the stone shoulder of Eva’s grave, a caring look upon his face. “You see… us Gods are not to dabble in human affairs apart from our job. It is forbidden to alter the natural course of reality… Remi did so. In his anger he came after Skylar… Skylar had long been on his list to reap and unfortunately he couldn’t seem to make the call. Well..” he disappeared and reappeared. Skylar stood as an image, holding the scythe in her hand. “It seems that Skylar is his replacement…eventually. As Eva is..was.. to be mine” he nodded his head and then re-appeared, floating slightly.
“Because Remi intruded natural living he interrupted the strings of fate. There for I took it upon myself to set things right. To create a new timeline, a new universe. As I am the God of Realms…” he spoke and then held his hands out. “Your lives will be rewritten… As you leave this void.. you will collide with your current self.. two souls..one body, until you are fully one. Skylar will faintly remember her previous life, but do not tell her of it. Allow her to discover it. Because she is still alive.. she can risk death if her mind is shocked by this truth. While you two are dead… melding with a live soul is easier…” he crossed his arms and then nodded.
“You will get another shot, another try. Make this the best you can…”

Eva shot up from slumber and gripped her head. It felt like she was being squeezed through straw. She groaned and then stood up. She slowly made her way to the bathroom and splashed water onto her face. She looked to her hand and held it up in the mirror – the outsider mark. She lowered her hand and turned – her mother stood in the doorway.
Eva’s eyes swelled up with tears and she took in a deep breath – it was her mother… her mother.. she was dead. A long time ago…
Reena reached forward and smacked Eva on the head with a towel. “You didn’t run the dishwasher kid” she grumbled and then pushed past Eva, to get in the shower. She was covered head to toe in flour, a complete mess of a baker. Eva grinned and shuffled by, walking up the stairs. Everything else was normal… the house was slightly rearranged. The bakery was the same. Eva always made sure to keep the bakery exactly as her mother left it when she died… Eva stepped to the counter and wiped it off with a rag.
She took in a deep breath and smiled. Maybe things would go differently this time…

Blake turned in his office and looked to the open window. Several pigeon cages swung slightly to the clatter of pigeons. He walked to the window and held his hand out – one landed on his hand.. a message strapped to his leg. He untied it and turned around. He wasn’t expecting any returns, this had to be news. Surely at this hour.. not good news. Blake rolled the paper out and read it.
There was a long moment of silence as he read it over and over again. His face was of utter shock. The rolled the paper and rushed out the door in a blaze of speed. He took the letter to one of the councilmen. Blake at the time was just an advisor, he had a vote but was not on the council. His job was training and delivery, he wasn’t too high in the totem pole. Not yet… a councilman position was to open soon, he would surely place his name into the vote.
The councilman, Kurtan laughed at him. “That is surely a fake, a set up. There is no way..” he waved Blake away. “You know nothing of these matters. Letters like this come so often, to tear the council apart would be to demolish the guild. Things like this happen often” he waved Blake out of his office and then resumed his paper work. Blake closed the door and held the paper close. He had to argue with the councilman to give it back… something about how nonchalant he acted was fishy…
Blake ran down the hallways. Skylar… that was his best bet. He had gotten to know Skylar quite well since he became the Training Advisor. They sparred often, and at times Skylar would catch him off guard – knock him down. She was getting so good – so fast. Whenever he could he would compliment her, as many did not.
Blake opened the door to Skylars training room. Not that it was truly her room, but she always claimed it. “Skylar..” he breathed heavily. “You – you need to see this. This just came in on a pigeon. Councilman Kurtan laughed in my face, he thought nothing of it. Which is odd, as normal protocol would be to investigate before dismissal” he handed the note over. “If – if this is true… we have to stop this from happening” he spoke and looked at her. He was so full of fear. “A world without Mavis as my Warden is a world I wish not to live” he spoke softly and bowed his head. “Please, please… even if it’s not true…”

Skylar spun around as Blake burst through the door, her dagger sliced through the air and stuck into the chest of the training dummy. “Blake?...What?” She furrowed her brows and stepped to him. Skylar took the letter from him and unrolled it as she read it a look of horror came across her face. “He…he laughed at you? How….why?...” Skylar placed her hand on his shoulder and gave a smile, courage in her expression. “I’ll stop this, don’t worry.” She turned and pulled at her dagger, it was stuck into the dummy rather deep. Skylar sighed slightly as she put her foot against the abdomen of the dummy and pulled hard against the hilt of her dagger. She stumbled backward and caught herself before she placed the dagger into its sheath on her thigh. “Blake…?” She looked to him, her brows pulled together once more, “Would you protect me? You’re…my only friend…and I…” She took in a breath, “If something happens to me, you have to protect my father from Ainsley, please.”
Blake bowed his head slightly, still fighting to catch his breath, “Yes, yes of course, Skylar.” He nodded.
“Come with me then.” Skylar turned and rushed down the halls. She stopped outside of her father’s study, guards stood at the door.
“Skylar.” One spoke and saluted to her as the other opened the door to her father’s study.
Skylar stepped inside, but Blake was blocked out by the guards. A high priority meeting such as this was not open to any guild members lower than the Warden and the Second hand. Skylar was allowed simply because she was the Warden’s daughter. “Father.” She spoke, breathless.
“Sky?” Mavis raised a brow, “What is it?” He looked to the letter that she held in her hand. He was sitting at his desk going over paperwork and assigning tasks to the guild members. He stopped everything, his attention was fully on her now. Mavis knew what it was that she held in her hand. He knew very well that in just a few minutes Ainsley was to assassinate him. Well, in the alternate timeline. He knew it wouldn’t happen here. Especially with Skylar holding the letter.
Skylar rolled the letter out and placed it on his desk, she leaned over the desk toward him, her eyes full of fear. “Father, Ainsley is going to try to kill you, that is what this meeting is about, this letter came by pidgin…B-Blake brought it to me he--…”
Mavis stood and moved to the other side of the desk. He pulled Skylar into his arms and hugged her tightly. “It’s okay, Sky.” He whispered.
“Councilmen Kurtan laughed in Blake’s face, he tried to bring it to his attention, father.” Skylar spoke just as the door to her father’s study opened.
Ainsley walked in he wore rather nice clothing for a guild member. He let everyone know his position, his title. The lowly guild members were made to feel like maggots to him, they had to beg for his attention. He was a ruler, not a leader. He looked to Skylar for a long moment, “Warden, don’t you think that your daughter should be elsewhere? This isn’t a place for a child.”
Mavis looked to Ainsley, analyzing him, he watched his every move. “Ainsley, she isn’t a child and she is the heir to the guild, she will become the Warden in the future when I retire from my position.”
Ainsley crossed his arms, “Very well then.” He stepped over toward the balcony and opened the doors, “You should let some air in, it’s stuffy in this old room.” He turned to Mavis, this was it. Lined up and ready, just like before. However, Skylar was too close to her father, Ainsley wouldn’t strike. Not yet. “So, the Overseer Soldiers are pushing into District 3, we have lost all bearing. I haven’t heard from any of our men there in days.”
Mavis took a few steps to the side toward his bookcase. He pulled a book of maps from the shelf and opened it, “Skylar.” He spoke and held the book toward her.
“Father…” Skylar spoke, her breathing shook slightly, she kept her eyes on Ainsley.
“What do you feel should be done, to aid the citizens of District 3? What is your plan, if you were Warden?” He gave a gentle smile.
Skylar took in a breath to speak. From the corner of her eye Ainsley rushed forward, the sound of him drawing his dagger from its sheath could be heard. Skylar turned, the book fell to the floor and she rushed him. She caught his wrist in her grip as she slipped her own dagger from its sheath. Ainsley growled as she pushed against her he slammed her against a bookcase, several books fell to the ground. Ainsley brought his knee up into her abdomen harshly.
“Ainsley!” Mavis called, though he didn’t move from his position. The Outsider had instructed him not to kill Ainsley, to allow Skylar to perform the action, if Mavis died again, then so be it. The Outsider made it clear that he was not to intervene.
Skylar loosened her grip on Ainsley, she allowed her dagger to clatter to the ground, giving him the impression that he had beaten her, she leaned forward slightly and gasped. Ainsley chuckled. “Worthless child.” He raised his elbow and went to draw it down into her.
Skylar snapped her fingers, ceasing time. She slammed her fist into his jaw and kicked him in his chest. She snapped her fingers once more and ripped his dagger from his grip as he flew backward and landed on his back. Skylar leaped forward and pressed her boot into his chest. She drew her pistol and aimed the barrel at his face. “You have two choices, Ainsley.” She spoke, her voice cold, “You will quietly get up, my father and I will walk you down to the basement and we will lock you away for the rest of your life, or, I can end your life right here, right now.”
Ainsley looked up at her with wide eyes, shock in his expression. “H-How…??”
Mavis held the letter up, “Ainsley, August 14 1428, Payment: 2,500,000 Gold Target: Mavis Olyver Scene: Spends an hour reviewing paperwork in the library, 8pm, alone. Time: 8 – 9pm Description: Harvest. No observers. No looting. Leave the Knife. Payment Pickup: Room 105. Safe Combo – 1-9-14-22
[Seal of Nighthand]
Why would be a better question for me to be asking you.” Mavis stared at him with cold eyes. “Attempted assassination of the Warden, and his daughter. You’ve dug your own grave. Tell me, who else is working with you? Hm?”
Ainsley struggled against Skylar’s boot that pressed into his chest. He thrashed against her and held his hands together, ice formed on her leg. Skylar cried out as he shoved her off of him. The ice shattered as she fell to the ground. Mavis was slammed against the wall in the next moment, Ainsley held the knife to his throat. “Why? Because Emperor Greystoke asked me to. Because they promise me several things in return if I kill you. Both of the Goldhand’s are in on it.” He chuckled then, “It was all too easy to convince them, I’ll kill them once they come to District 1. I can’t wait to see the look on their faces when--…”
Suddenly Skylar ripped Ainsley from her father, she slammed him into the floor and brought her fist into his face several times, blood splattered from the wounds that opened up in his face. “You….won’t….kill….him!” She cried as she beat him with her fists. She pulled her pistol and shoved it harshly against his jaw. “Killing him will tear the guild apart, I won’t allow you, or anyone else to do that!” She pulled the trigger. When Ainsley knocked Skylar to the ground, the memory of him stabbing her father had surfaced, like a nightmare it flashed before her eyes. It caused the rage within her to rise and carry out her actions.
Mavis stepped forward carefully, he helped his daughter stand and slipped the pistol from her grip. “Thank you.” He whispered and hugged her to his body, “It’s okay, Sky, it’s okay. I’m here.” He brushed a few tears from her cheeks and gave her a gentle smile. “Come on, we need to speak to the council….”
Skylar took in a slow breath and gave a nod. She followed her father as he called for a meeting of the entire guild, to draw out the traitors and take care of them immediately.

Axel stood just outside of the bakery. “Admiral Sir.” He saluted to Elias.
Elias handed him a letter. “Lieutenant. You will take this letter inside and deliver it to the women in this shop, to inform them of the most unfortunate loss of life of their beloved family member, and remind them that they owe us a great deal of money.” He chuckled at the end.
“Yes sir.” Axel took the letter into his hand. He stepped inside of the bakery and up to the counter. He looked to Eva for a moment before he looked around the shop, he brought his eyes back to her, he didn’t like delivering this news. “Miss…” He spoke, his eyes showed the guilt that he already had. “I am terribly sorry to report this news.” He held the letter out to her. “Do remember that the debt of your lost family member is passed on to you….” He bit his lip slightly, he saw the numbers on the letter, he knew it was impossible to pay it. “I’m sorry, Miss….” He bowed his head slightly.
