“Did you hear?” A man sat at the tavern, his large hand wrapped around a grey mug – filled to the top with ale. He brought the mug to his lips and take a large gulp, a drip of two fell into his thick beard. He turned in is chair and looked to his friend next to him, grinning from ear to ear. “That do good-er so called captain Ren will be docking. Birdseye from the Falcon saw her on route to Askabar.” The man spoke in a ruggish tongue, he took another sip.
“Eh? That so? Just in time for all the festivities, ‘suppose” a man about the same size as him took a swig of his ale and nodded. “So, any plans then, you think she is recruiting?”
“Dunno, not sure if that life is good for me. Though all the lads will be linin’ up that’s for sure” he took another swig and then let out a burp. “Though a free ticket around the world, eh? Tempting” he leaned back and chugged the last bit.
***
“Captain –“ there was a knock on a very intricate wooden door. Ren glanced up from her table, which was centered in the middle of the room. She turned a page over, hiding it, and then nodded. “Yes, Lando?” Ren stepped from the table…
She was a rather short figure, her skin was a light tan color – touched by the glorious sun. Her hair was short and spiked about, tossed around – blown by the wind. She wore a pair of tight black pants, practically painted on, tall folded over boots that came to just below her knees. About her hips was a collection of 4 belts – overlapping and half hazardly relaxing about her figure… and her vest had several clasps in the center – holding a leather bit across her red silky tunic. About her neck was a red bandana, which was loose and slightly tattered…
Ren adjusted her short sword on her hip and nodded, following him as he urged her forward. They stepped out onto the grand deck. Her eyes followed the 3 large masts that climbed high into the sky, the sails were out fully – taught by the wind. The crew were standing at their stations, hands holding onto their lines – as they were tied off. They were ready at any second to take hold, if they needed to.
Ren looked upward, the sun was shining in between her sails, her eyes spyed the tall Crow’s nest, Beaker was holding a scope to his eye, watching as he should. Everything was perfect. The wind was blowing, they were moving swiftly – the sound of water sloshed against the back of the ship as they cut through the water with ease.
From the Crows nest Beaker came flying down, his arm holding onto a thick line. He landed with ease. He was a skinny guy, but his arms were powerful – lean and strong. “Cap’n!” he smiled and collapsed his scope. “Bastard ship Falcon was off in the distance, I saw ‘em sending a crow off, certainly word Is traveling fast.”
“As expected… This route is a very well known one, Askabar is only a few hours away now. The closer we get… the more ships to see. Best get up there, Beaker” she tapped his shoulder and then turned to the stairs. She climbed up past the Captains chambers, and stood on the highest deck.
“Leave it to me, Caine” she reached for the wheel and wrapped her fingers around two large spokes. She rubbed the smooth wood with her finger and nodded. “So what is it you wanted to say, Lando?”
Lando was her second in command, her best friend – who had been following her for quite sometime. He was an elf, the only elf on the ship – he had been go with her for nearly 100 years now.
“Recruiting this round?” Lando questioned. He was tall, around 7 feet, his body was sculpted – he was an agile fighter, the best of her crew. He wore leathers, dark and smooth – that of his people, the Dark Wood Elves. About his armor were green scriptures, feathers and bits…
“Yes sir… I’m taking 5 new members. There’s a stir of commotion in the Phase, I want to gear up, get some resources, and prepare for the worst.” She spoke softly and turned the wheel slightly, catching the wind as it shifted.
“What are you sensing?” he questioned, crossing his arms then, standing behind her as he watched the men. A few were scaling the mast, adjusting a few things here and there.
“Something big… I can’t say yet..” she nodded then. “I want you to ready the men, our cargo needs to be clean, we pass inspection without an issue, got it?”
“Aye Cap’n” Lando then stepped from her and rushed down the stairs, going downward into the hull.
Soon they came upon land – a grand and glorious city and castle was off into the distance. About them was a collection of ships, all clustered and moving slowly. Ren slowed their speed, they even closed up 1 of the sails, as it was flapping without care. She pulled them into the port and then they came to a stop. The men were bustling around – rolling up sails and tying them down.
A man in silver armor stepped on board. “Captain Ren, a pleasure to see you. I am Gordon McRoy – I will be doing the cargo inspection.”
“Absolutely McRoy, my second hand Lando will guide you the way.”
“Right away, once I have cleared you – you and your men can exit the ship.” Gordon spoke, and then followed Lando downward.
It was about 10 minutes later that they came back up, Gordon nodded. “You’re in the clear – please proceed. Remember the docking fee is 100 Gold per day. The Docking Coordinator Tyson will come to you on your check out day.” He then stepped off the ship.
“Huddle!” Ren called out, as she stood on the center deck.
About 15 men crowded around her. “Alright, we’re recruiting today. 5 new members, got it? I need you to restock, resupply. Prior you’ve got that lead. Lando and I will be at the Black Rogue Tavern. Craven – I want you to go out and spread the word. Everyone else… handle your position. Don’t let any ambitions fools try anything silly…” she nodded. “Off you go”
The group dispersed, everyone knew what they were to do. Ren nodded to Lando, and they both stepped off the ship. On the docks was a crowd of people, many looking to her ship. Atlas – was carved into the side, the name of her beauty. Some tried to stop her – to talk to her, but all the hustle and bustle had the words Captain. Ren. Atlas. And some other lines…
They squeezed through the lot and made their way into the streets, it was a little quiet then. “We are here cause of some fesitivities… Talk to some people and figure out what exactly is going on… I’m going to relax.” She grinned and then slipped into a skinny Alley. The alley lead into an overhang - which went downward into the ground. It was one very long strip of shops, dimly lit as well. The Skag.
She had been here several times before. Askabar was a very wealthy place, this is where they came to restock on the important goods. To meet with traders, get the expensive high quality goods, to get repairs… Whatever they needed. Askabar was the place.
She slipped into the Black Rogue Tavern, and the room lit up. Everyone stopped for a second to see who entered – and then there was hooping and hollering. “Ren!!” A large man came forward. “Aha! I thought I’d never see you again!”
“Wynnie” Ren smiled and gave him a side hug. “Glad to see you in one piece” They both sat at the bar.
“Here for the fun?” Wynnie questioned. He was a huge man, bulky and beefy, the kind you’d like to hire as a guard.
“Aye. 1 Cream Ale” she then turned to him and chuckled. “Here to recruit, my fine sir. You in for another round on good ol’ Atlas?” she questioned, taking her foamy ale.
Wynnie grinned and then shook his head. “I got me a wife now, 2 little girls. I can’t leave them…”
“More power to you, sir” she clinked her ale to his cup and took a swig. “Can I hire you today then, at least? Watch my back, keep the peace?”
Wynnie held his ale up “Ha, for a price – your man Wynnie can do anything, doll” he chuckled. “Lando – “ he held his glass up, as Lando entered the Tavern.
“Well… let’s secure a table, and see what happens, shall we?” she nodded and pointed to a table that just cleared. It was in the back of the tavern. They walked over and sat down, relaxing into their seats.
“I’m going to do this a little differently. We wait and see who comes up, listen to them. If I like them.. I’ll give them an invitation to the ship tonight. I’ll do some private interviews, and go from there. Sound good?” She looked to Lando, who nodded to her. “After the sour egg I had last round… I am going to be extra picky this time” she held her drink up and took a sip.
“Now if only I had a bit of chocolate…”
Lando stood up then and laughed. “Right away, Cap’n”

swish, swish. The sounds of the bristles of a brush rubbed against the floor vigorously. Fingers curled around the wooden handle of the scrub brush. A woman held onto it, she’d been at this for hours. Getting up every speck of dirt, at the king’s request.
“You missed a spot.” The king stepped through where she’d just scrubbed.
The girl paused in frustration for a moment, she took in a breath and scrubbed away the shoeprint. This had been her life, a servant to the royal family. She pushed back a lock of her chocolate brown hair.
“Jonathan, don’t treat her like that.” A hand reached down. “Come on then.”
The young woman looked up to the queen, she took her hand and stood. She glanced to the king then for a moment, his eyes looked to his wife, his arms crossed.
“You’ve worked hard enough for the day, hm?” Queen Elanor spoke, “I have something special for you, Ayla.” She brought her along.
“Elanor…” The king spoke, his voice held frustration.
Elanor paused and looked to him. “She’s been working her fingers to the bone since she was a tike, Jonathan, she deserves a thank you from us? Does she not?” Her voice was cross. “Come, Ayla.” The tone lightened then.
Ayla looked to the king for a moment, she then adverted her eyes from him and stepped off with the queen. She quietly followed the woman through the castle. Her eyes looked over the armor of the knights that stood along the hallways patrolling the area. Soon they rounded into the servants quarters. The queen led her to her room. She’d lived in the castle as long as she could remember. The king and queen took her in off of the streets, her mother had died in her birth. Her payment to the royal family was to serve them and perform the tasks that were asked of her.
“I’ve watched you, for a long time, Ayla.” The queen spoke as they stepped into the room. A trunk sat at the end of her bed, it hadn’t been there this morning. “You stand out in the courtyard with this old rusted blade.” She stepped up to the broadsword that was leaned against the wall in the small room. “Your movements are incredibly fluid, precise, well handled.” Elanor looked to her. “I’ve seen you shut down my knights, without breaking a sweat.” She looked into Ayla’s eyes for a moment then before she stepped over to the chest. “Jonathan isn’t too keen on the idea, but, I believe this is something that you deserve.” She reached forward and a gentle glow came from her fingertips, the lock on the trunk slid out of place and she lifted it open.
Ayla took a step forward, inside of the trunk lay a set of armor, a new sword, undergarments to pad the armor. The designs upon the armor were intricate, though subtle. Swirls here and there. Her jaw loosened as she looked over the set.
“I believe you belong on our royal guard, not on the servant staff.” Elanor spoke, “Only, if you’d like of course.” She smiled then as she looked to Ayla, whom was dumbfounded.
“I…” Ayla looked to the queen. “Me?” She asked her brows raised high. “You’ve watched me?” She let out a laugh and shook her head. “I would give anything to be on the royal guard. It would be an honor.” She bowed her head.
The queen smiled then, “I knew you would, you will do well serving as a knight in the royal guard.”
**
It had been 5 years since she’d been inducted into the royal guard. Ayla stood in the courtyard, her hand on the hilt of her sword. It was the afternoon before the grand ball. The kick off to the festival of the hunt. It brought a lot of traders to the city, fighters. Those who wanted a chance at joining the royal guard. Ayla turned as she heard footsteps approaching, the red cloth beneath her armor swayed slightly in the gentle breeze. “My queen.” She bowed her head.
“Lieutenant.” Elanor spoke with a grin. Her smile then softened slightly. “Take the evening off, you’ve earned it.”
“My queen…” Ayla spoke, her brows tucked together slightly. “The ball.”
Elanor chuckled. “We have plenty of guards that can handle a masquerade, go, celebrate the hunt, look for prospective knights.” She grinned.
Ayla was left standing in the courtyard alone then. She sighed slightly and walked into the city. The citizens nodded to her and moved from her path. Making way. Ayla gave a gentle smile to a few as she moved through the city. She heard rumblings and whisperings of the Atlas. Ayla knew it. From books. She’d heard of the great Captain Ren. The do good pirate that sailed the seas. Ayla glanced to the beautiful castle for a moment and she turned to bump into the chest of a tall man. They stumbled and toppled to the ground. Alya landed on her back with a grunt and the man landed over her. He scrambled to his feet and offered his hand down to her.
“Sorry, Madam.” Lando stood before her, his tipped ears caught her eyes.
Ayla took his hand as he offered it down to her. “It was my fault, I wasn’t paying any mind to my surroundings.” She spoke.
“That is a beautiful sword.” Lando spoke, noting the wings that stretched out from the hilt creating the guard. A beautiful blue jewel rest in the middle.
“Ah…” Ayla looked to it. “The queen herself gifted it to me.” She smiled.
Lando rose his brows and nodded he looked to the tavern behind him. “Well I have to get some chocolate for my captain.” He chuckled.
“Your captain requested chocolate?” She grinned and let out a laugh. “Sounds like an interesting captain.”
Lando nodded and let out a hearty laugh. “The best kind.” He spoke as he began to walk off.
“If your captain wants chocolate that isn’t the way, sir.” Ayla spoke, a smile on her lips. Lando paused, he knew very well where he’d gotten chocolate before, he always got the same bar for Ren each time they were in Askabar.
Ayla gave a smile, “I’ll show you.” She spoke, “There is a shop that is tucked away, only those who live here know of it really. It has some of the best chocolate I have ever tasted and I’ve traveled a bit.”
Lando looked to her curiously. “If you are to show me this place, I’ll need a name.” He chuckled. “I’m Lando, second hand to Ren on the Atlas.”
Ayla looked him over for a moment and nodded, “Lieutenant Ayla Sarálonde of the Royal Guard.” She spoke and stepped into the city. “The Atlas huh?” She asked and paused a moment. “Is it all that they say?” She questioned.
Lando nodded, “Stories can’t justify the things that Ren does.” He spoke, “Though, the stories do fairly well.”
Ayla thought for a few seconds before she nodded, “I could see that, things get changed, made more than what they are, or less, depending on the word of mouth and how it is passed along. Rumors.” She let out a laugh. She then stopped at a small door. They stepped inside and she walked up to the counter. “Mario.” She spoke to the old man on the other side of the counter. “May I get the best sampler?”
The old man grinned. “Ah for you, Ayla? Anything.” He moved about plucking chocolates from behind the glass before he eventually held it out to her.
“How much?” She asked as she took the box.
He gave a sly smile. “No charge for the beautiful Lieutenant.” He spoke and then looked to Lando, “Double the cost for this one.” He winked then, he was only joking.
Ayla chuckled and set a few coins on the counter. “Thank you, Mario.” She spoke as they stepped out and back into the city streets. “Here you are, fresh chocolates for the captain.” She grinned.
Lando took the box and smiled to her. “These look fantastic, I’m sure Ren will approve.” He smirked.
Ayla nodded and glanced to the sound of cheering. A few small festivities began this evening before the ball. Marksmanship testing, agility testing, all the like. This was one of Ayla’s favorite festivals. It really showcased the best warriors.
They walked through the streets then for a few minutes before Lando paused outside the tavern. “You should come meet the Captain.” He nodded to her. “Come on.”
Ayla looked to him for a moment before she finally nodded. “Alright. I’ve always been curious.” She followed him inside.
Lando walked up to Ren and set the beautiful box down before her. “Courtesy of the Lieutenant here.” He smirked and nodded to Ayla as she walked up.
Ayla looked to Ren a moment, “Lieutenant Ayla Sarálonde, of the Royal Guard. Pleased to meet you.” She smiled then. “I’ve read a lot of your adventures.”

Once Lando left – a crowd of folks made their way to her table. She talked to a few, laughs were shared. “Sit – “ she pointed to one man. He sat across the table, looking to her. “Would you like an ale?” Ren waved her hand to the barkeep – who brought a brown ale over. “You look like you enjoy a bit of spice in your ale, aye?”
The man lifted the mug and nodded his head. “Thank you kindly” he took a swig and then grinned. He was a shorter man, of average build – muscular but nothing too intense. He had short well kept hair, and gristle like beard.
“What’s your name, tell me a little about yourself” Ren questioned and leaned back, looking directly at him. The tavern was a buzz – people passing by. But she paid attention to him.
“Shiv... I was a farmer, but unfortunately that life gone, I am now Handyman.” He leaned back, his face showed a bit of pain – like something else was there.
“Any family, Shiv?” she questioned, likely knowing the answer.
“Um.. no. They.. passed away.” He took another swig of his beer, and then another.
“Well then Shiv... finish your ale” she pulled out a small card and handed it to him. “I will see you tonight then. I hope. You should come and we can talk in private, perhaps The Atlas is for you?”
Shiv looked up – “r-really? Wow, I’d be honored...” he took the card and turned it over in his hands. “I really just wanted to meet you, this was already a blessing..” he laughed and then finished his ale. “Very well, Captain Ren – I will meet you tonight then.”
“It’s not a guarantee... just remember that” she smiled and waved him off. Just then Lando came forward with a box of chocolates.
“Ahoy!” Ren reached forward and plucked the box off the table. “Shhh- “ she stopped Ayla in the middle of her sentence.
“Sit sit...” she pointed to the seat and then opened the box.
“Oyyyyye” she plucked one of the square chocolates up and observed it. She then plopped it into her mouth and closed her eyes. “Oh dear” she savored it and then grinned, eyes still closed. She then closed the box and finished her bite.
“Alright then, what was that? Ayla, Lieutenant, Royal Guard. Something about stories, right.” She leaned back and looked to the woman for a moment. “Where did you get that chocolate?” she spoke aloud and looked to the box.
Lando laughed “I ran into her while going to your regular place. Lieutenant Ayla directed me to a unknown Chocolatier and kindly purchased this box for you.”
“Did you tell her... Lando” Ren raised an eyebrow and glanced to him.
Lando laughed then and shook her head. “No.. I did not... Ren’s weakness is Chocolate, I could persuade her to just about anything if I have the right box... and I actually have” he laughed again and reached for the box.
Suddenly there was a loud thwap, Ren smacked Lando’s hand away. “Tch – No touchy” she moved the box away.
“Ohh, you did well then Lieutenant” Lando smiled. Wynnie let out a laugh as well, drinking from his cup right after.
“Right... well... You did.” Ren grinned. “Thank you, Ayla. Would you like a drink?” she questioned and waved the bartender over. He stepped over and smiled “Yes Captain Ren?” he questioned. “Get whatever Lieutenant Ayla wants” Then the bartender turned to Ayla and nodded “Then it is so, Whatever Lieutenant Ayla wants..”
“So you’ve read alot huh?” Ren cheekily grinned. “I’ve read ‘em too. They’re not completely up to snuff. They portrait me as some kind of heroic super serious figure” she laughed. “Right Wynnie?”
“Oh yes – so serious” He blurted and laughed loudly. “I don’t think Ren has a serious bone in her” held his ale up. “Oye – take that back” Ren shoved him, but her tiny body did nothing against the huge beast next to her.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a lie” Lando smiled and held his ale up as well.
“Heyy!” Ren tapped Lando on the shoulder. “Better watch yourself now” Ren huffed and then leaned back, laughing all the way.
“Hey – What is all the commotion” A loud booming voice filled the Tavern. The place paused, everyone looked to the voice. It was a tall bulky man, his body was riddled with leathers – a Pirates hat atop his head. He stepped forward, his boots thumping on the wooden floor. “If it aint The Atlas crew...” he shoved his way to the table.
Ren stood up and looked to him, she grit her teeth slightly. “Bilor”
The man laughed, his teeth were lightly rotten – his beard was long and untamed. “You don’t seem so happy to see me, eh?” he leaned forward and took her cream ale off the table and gulped down the last bit. “Didn’t think you would. I had to come in and crash on your parade. Recruiting I heard?” he stepped back. “Any of you land lubbers want to hit the sea?” he threw his hands up. “The Atlas pays little to nothing for their men. The Falcon though! A real adventure. Riches, money, excavation of seemingly empty ships – looting and hootin!” he laughed loudly.
Ren scoffed and sat back down. “You done yet?” she questioned.
“Aye, you think you’re all safe. Think you own this Tavern?” he leaned down and looked to her. “But ye’ don’t. Just know... once you leave this dock – I’ll be on your tale. You owe me for intercepting my booty. And I’ll make sure you pay” he spat and then turned, walking out of the Tavern.
“What a sore loser” Ren crossed her arms and then shook her head. “Hey – Ayla, You taking part of this Hunting Games? I’ve never done it before, how do I sign up?” she questioned, standing up.

Ayla stopped speaking and shifted her weight slightly as she watched Ren open up the box of beautifully crafted chocolates. She moved to the chair and sat down, leaning back into it, relaxing. She watched as Ren popped one of the chocolates into her mouth and seemed to melt, Ayla let out a soft chuckle when Ren then continued on the conversation. She looked to Lando as he spoke up, telling the Captain how he’d come across the box. Ayla stifled a laugh then when the Captain smacked away Lando’s hand from the chocolate. “Best chocolate in Askabar, hands down.” She smirked. She then gave a nod to the offer of the drink and looked to the bar tender as he came over. “I’d like a stout good sir.” She spoke. Her use of language matched that of a royal, due to her upbringing. She’d been raised around Princess Amalliey, she spent time in the study with the queen. The king was harsh on her, but every now and then he would lighten up on her and show some form of care toward her.
She looked to Ren as she spoke of the books and then the bartender set her stout down in front of her. She took a drink and relaxed again into her chair a soft smile on her lips as she looked back and forth as Lando and Wynnie began to tease her. Ayla chuckled as she watched the three bickering. Her smile dropped from her expression when the man called over the commotion of the bar. Everything seemed to stop, everyone gave their attention to him as he spoke.
Ayla looked to the man, Bilor. She knew of him. The terror of the seas. A filthy pirate that would steal even the last bread crumb from a starving street rat. Her hand had gone to the hilt of her sword, her eyes looked over the man as he spoke. She watched Ren stand, a tiny figure to the pirate. After a few more words Bilor turned on his heel and left. The tavern slowly began to return to business as usual. The chatter came back. Ayla relaxed again and took a drink of her stout.
“The hunt?” She asked and then gave a smile. “I participate every year.” She leaned forward, showing her enthusiasm. “I’ll show you, we have a ticket booth, it’s in the middle of town. That’s where you sign up for the festival.” She finished off her beer and stood. Ayla’s cheeks had turned slightly pink from the beer. She walked toward the exit of the tavern and into the streets. “So, what exactly did Bilor mean? I’ve heard of him. His treachery. I knew a man from Alexandria that was murdered by Bilor for apparently stealing his money. The man is a piece of work.” She grit her teeth. “If I had any jurisdiction…” She shook her head then, he’d never committed any crimes in Askabar, he knew the Royal Guard would end his string of murders and jewel heists.
“Lieutenant!” A voice called over the hustle and bustle of the city streets.
Ayla turned her head then her eyes looking to the sound.
A young boy came running forward, his right eye was blackened, his elbow had an abrasion on it from falling. “Lieutenant, you have to help.” The boy spoke, tears rolled down his cheeks.
Ayla knelt down, “What happened?” She asked, her voice gentle.
The boy took the last two steps forward and wrapped his arms around her, sobbing. “The shop…” He cried into her chest. “Some men…they….came and…my dad….”
Ayla furrowed her brows, she stood with the young boy hugged to her body. She’d known him since he was a baby. He was about 5 now. His name was Evan and his father was the son of the old man that owned the chocolate shop. She looked to Ren. “I have to take care of this.” She spoke, “If you want to help you can come…along, I can meet you back here later if need be.” Ayla then took off quickly with the boy hugged to her chest. She rushed through the streets and dashed into a few alleyways to avoid the crowds that had been drawn to the city from the festival.
Ayla stopped outside of the shop, she knelt and set Evan on his feet. “Stay here okay?” She spoke to him as she looked to the store front. One of the glass windows with the painted on words ‘Garduno’s Chocolatier’ was shattered. The door was cracked open. Ayla pulled her dagger from her thigh and stepped into the shop. “Hello? Mario?” She called. “Samuel?” She stepped inside. “If anyone is in here come out by order of the Royal Guard.”
A pan clattered to the floor in the kitchen.
“I will only ask once more, by order of the Royal Guard show yourself.” Ayla called, her voice louder this time. Ayla edged forward, her brows tucked together. She stepped back behind the counter, glass crunched beneath her boot.
Suddenly a figure rushed forward and slammed into Ayla. She was thrust back and shoved through the other storefront window. Glass shattered around her as she was slammed to the ground by her attacker. Her dagger stuck cleanly into the thick leather shoulder plate. The man was huge and burley. He didn’t seem bothered by the blade piercing into his body. He gripped Ayla around her neck and held her on the ground. “Royal Guard.” He spat, his breath smelled horrible. “You’re on the guard?” He snickered. “You’re pathetic.” He scoffed.
Ayla gripped his wrist and in a swift motion she slipped from beneath him. Her movement was fluid and quick. It all happened in a blink of an eye. Ayla pulled her dagger from his shoulder and her knee collided with his ribcage almost instantly. The man was knocked to the ground and scrambled to his feet quickly. He pulled a blunderbuss from his hip and held it out. The flash of the muzzle came as the explosive sound of the shot filled the streets. Ayla moved quickly, the bullet barely grazed her forearm as she moved. Her sword was drawn and she rushed the man. The bandit couldn’t react in time as she brought her sword down on his pistol, knocking it from his grip. Her elbow collided harshly with the side of his head then and he toppled to the ground. Ayla sheathed her sword and stepped forward. She pulled restraints from her pouch and slapped them over his wrists. “Yes, I am a part of the Royal Guard.” She spoke. The man’s eyes cracked open as she spoke to him, his nose was bleeding onto the cobblestone street.
By this time a few other knights had shown up. “Take him to the gallows, we will pass our judgement on him after the festival, find out what he has stolen.” She spoke.
“Yes Lieutenant.” One saluted her before he helped the other carry the man off, his feet dragged along the ground.
Suddenly the young boy gripped his arms around Ayla’s thigh, hugging onto her. “My dad?” He asked, his eyes still filled with tears.
Ayla knelt again, “Stay here, I’m going to check.” She spoke and brushed a tear away before she headed back into the shop. Ayla looked around at the place, the register was knocked to the floor, empty. The glass was shattered over the top of the chocolates. She sighed softly as she pulled her dagger again and moved through the shop.
“Ay…la….” A voice choked.
Ayla looked around and then rushed forward. “Samuel…” She breathed.
He gripped onto his side, blood was gushing from the wound. “He…was…fast…he…”
“Shh.” Ayla pulled his hand away and then looked to him. “Just, relax.” She placed her hand over the wound and applied pressure. Her ocean eyes melted into an evergreen color, her breathing quickened slightly. A green glow began to surround her hand, the glow moved over his body. Samuel began to relax, his eyes fluttered as he leaned back against the wall more, a warmth filled his body as her magic swarmed him. After a few moments the glow dissipated and Ayla sat back, the wound was completely gone. “There you are.” She spoke, her voice soft.
Samuel took in a breath, he looked down to the rip in his clothing, his blood remained soaked into the tunic. “Ayla….h-how…?” He asked his eyes widened. “The king…forbids the use of magic…”
Ayla took in a breath. “Not all laws are for good reason.” She spoke and stood helping him up. “Where is your father?” She looked around the kitchen, it was completely turned upside down.
Samuel crossed his arms. “He went home, thankfully.” He looked to her.
Ayla leaned down and lifted up a box of chocolates from the ground that was still sealed and untouched. As she leaned forward her slightly tipped ears showed. She set the box on the counter. “Evan…he’s outside, come on.” She turned and stepped outside. The little boy rushed forward to his father and hugged onto him tightly.
Samuel lifted him and kissed his cheek. “Good job my boy.” He spoke and smiled. “I knew you’d find the Lieutenant.” He chuckled. He then looked to her, his expression softened. “Were your parents…or at least was one of your parents an elf?” He asked, curious. “You’re never spoken of either of them.”
Ayla let out a soft sigh. “It’s because I don’t know much of them.” She shifted her weight slightly. “My mother died shortly after my birth, she was a servant for many years to the royal family…I was lucky for that I suppose…I’ve never heard anything of my father.” She shook her head. “From what the queen has told me of my mother she was an elf, yes.” She spoke then and looked to Samuel. “An elf that fled the southern city, to get away from the dark elf king. She took shelter here in Askabar.”
Samuel turned and stared at the shop as he listened, his expression defeated. “I didn’t know, I’m sorry Ayla...” He spoke softly. “How are we going to replace this…” He muttered. “That guy wasn’t alone, Ayla…he had four others with him…”
Ayla looked to him, her arms crossed, “Have you ever seen them before in the city?” She asked.
Samuel shook his head. “No, they must be here for the festival…”
Ayla took in a breath. “Alright.” She nodded. “I will get the word out to my men…” She then sighed as she looked to the storefront. “I’ll help you.” She spoke.
Samuel sighed softly, “It’s going to cost too much, Ayla.” He spoke softly. “I’m lucky to have my life. You’ve done more than enough.” He gave a warm smile.
Ayla took in a breath and glanced over as another few of her men walked up. “Get descriptions of the others and help this man clean up his shop.” She spoke. “Let me know if you need anything, Samuel.” She turned and walked off toward the city. She thought deeply, what could they have wanted? It was such a small shop. There wasn’t anything to steal. She then began to wonder if Bilor had noticed the chocolate box. What if he was behind the attack?

Ren stood and followed Ayla out of the Tavern, they walked and Ren listened. Her eyes traced the buildings and followed an occasional person. “Ah – every year then? So you’d be tough competition to me… perhaps we should team up” she grinned “we could flip a coin on who gets the loot in the end” she chuckled. Suddenly the little boy rushed up.
“I’m behind you” Ren called as she followed Ayla – they ran through the streets until they got to a small chocolate shop. Ren stopped outside as Ayla rushed inward, her eyes looking to the chocolate shop name. The glass every where. She grit her teeth and drew her short sword.
Ren held her hand up and a red flare shot high into the sky… and then she stepped inside. She caught the tail end of the battle – Ayla had seamlessly captured him… Ren stepped over to the counter and touched a tattered box, shards of glass poke into it and damaged the chocolate. “Oh my beauties…” she whispered and opened the box. The chocolates were squashed and ruined…
Ren pushed the box to the side and then peaked into the room, her eyes glanced to Ayla’s glowing hand – and then to her slightly tipped ears. Ren raised and eyebrow and turned as her name was called.
“Cap’n!” A group of her sailors stood. They were pretty well dressed for sailors, but it was obvious that they were.
“All is well, seems this poor shop was attacked. I don’t think it was coincidence. Grab a broom, help clean up” she ordered.
“Cap’n!” They said in unison and the 5 split across the shop.
“No need to gather your men, Ayla – mine are already here…” She spoke as she stepped to the three. “Ren, Captain of The Atlas, pleased to meet you. Big fan of your chocolate, I am I am.” She reached forward and shook Samuel’s hand. “Listen…” she looked to Ayla, then to Samuel. She reached into her pouch and pulled out a heavy bag of coins. “We do lots of charity work, you know? I figure – an art like yours… I can write this donation off on my taxes. I can’t let this go down in flames, your chocolate is too great for that… Please accept this, as my gratitude for the delicious creations you bring into this world” she joked and handed him the bag.
“That was some excellent fighting, Lt… I’d hate to go up against you in these hunts. So.. what do you say, partners?” Ren grinned and held her hand out – to shake in agreement.
The men moved about the shop, the glass was swept up – and they were dumping it into the trash can. They picked up the chairs, tossed the broken bits. Put the books back on their shelves, collected the damaged chocolates and stacked them. A few pieces were missing from the box, potentially eaten by the crew…
“Ayla… come here” she waved her over as she stepped away, out in the street slightly. “I’m thinking that wasn’t a coincidence… and I’m terribly sorry that it happened. Potentially me being involved in your friendship has put harm to your friend… which is a risk that often happens with me. No evidence that it was truly Bilor, but I wouldn’t put it past him..” she spoke and crossed her arms.
“My men will stay here until this place is fixed up… I don’t want to miss the hunt” she grinned and nodded. “I should go sign up, will you take me there? This city is massive and…well, I’ll get lost. Being short and all” she grinned. “Just a minute, okay?”
She walked back into the shop and whistled. The men stopped and looked to her. “Cap’n!” they said in unison again.
“I want you to stick around until this place is looking good – I am going to go participate in the Hunt, maybe come across some new prospects for the crew. Once you’re done – report back to the ship and have a beer or two.” Ren commanded.
“Cap’n!” One of the men turned then and looked to Samuel. “We are at your disposal, whatever you need done. Cap’n says it so” He spoke.
Ren then turned and looked to Ayla. “Let’s go before registration is closed”

Ayla watched with a slack jaw as Ren offered up the heavy bag of coins. Samuel looked to the captain, an equally astonished look about his face. “Th-thank you.” He choked. Evan was nearly asleep, hugged to his body.
Ayla watched as Ren’s men began working on the shop, cleaning it up. “I’ve known this place since I was a child. I would run errands here, to pick up chocolates for the royal family. I’ve known Samuel my whole life, we’ve grown up together…to see this happen to the shop…” She sighed. “If Bilor had anything to do with this, my men will find out. We will heavily question the man that we captured, until I get an answer from him. If I have to do the questioning myself I will.”
Ayla’s mood then softened when Ren mentioned the hunt again, she chuckled. “Team up?” She smiled wide. “I would be honored to have the Captain of the Atlas at my side.” She chuckled then and led her toward the center of town. “I could imagine the city to be daunting to someone that was not born here, it has a lot of ins and outs.” She spoke as they zig zagged through the city.
Ayla stopped as they came to the town’s center, in the middle of it all a circular building stood. A wooden sign hung from the building that had the word tickets engraved into it.
“Join the hunt! Get a better vantage point! Make your bets here!” A man behind the counter called out into the streets. “Tickets! Get your tickets to the festival here!” His eyes then fell on Ayla as she walked up to the booth with Ren at her side. “Why if it isn’t last years champion.” He grinned from ear to ear. “Come to check in on the competition?” He chuckled. “How are you today Ayla?”
Ayla smiled back to him and let out a laugh. “No, no, you know I only do this for the fun of it.” She smirked. “I would actually like to add my friend here in as a teammate.”
The man’s eyes moved to Ren, he smiled behind his moustache that curled up at the ends. He wore a top hat on his head and a fancy suit. He wore small thin glasses that fell slightly down his nose as he leaned forward. “I’m not sure you’re tall enough.” He chuckled he then pushed a few papers forward. “Just fill out these forms, you’ll be the last entrant for the day.” He reached over and flipped over the sign to closed. “Tomorrow begins the hunt.” He grinned.
Ayla glanced around the town center looking to the hustle and bustle of people moving around. She looked over to Ren as she filled out the paper work. It wasn’t much, just a few waivers. The hunt was dangerous after all.
Ayla looked up to the castle that sat above the city, looking down over it. This was the first year she hadn’t been at the ball. The first night actually off…in…she couldn’t remember how long. Though, she never asked for time off. She lived to serve the royal family. She didn’t have anything else…
The lieutenant looked to Ren then and nodded. “Alright then.” She smiled as the man handed a ticket to Ren. “That’s it.” She smiled. “The hunt will be fantastic. It’s something I look forward to each year, it’s a challenge.” She stepped off into the city, walking aimlessly it seemed. “We will start in the town center, beasts will be released into the city for the contenders to fight. We gain points from the amount of beasts that we vanquish, and with the speed that we do this. Each year they unleash different creatures, I am excited to see what they’ve found this year.”
Ayla paused then, “There is always a trophy beast, it’s usually very powerful, extremely dangerous, but, it gives the most points. I try to seek it out, last year that is how I won.” She smiled as she slowed her pace. She looked up to the castle. She felt out of place outside of her duties. She wondered how the ball was going for the princess. Tonight several royals had come in with the festival to try and court the princess. Though, she hadn’t taken to any before. Ayla had spent a good deal of time with Amalliey, it almost felt like they truly were family. Until she would be reminded that she was a knight in the guard, or a servant. The king always had his way of reminding her of that.
Ayla then looked to Ren as she stopped outside of the tavern they had originally met in. “I’ve talked too much, my apologies.” She spoke and let out a soft laugh.

Ren followed along as they walked through the city. “I’ve done a lot of traveling in my time, and truthfully – I put Askabar on the lower bit of my list. It is far too large, too busy. Though, I have to remind myself – I dislike most cities, as the sea is my home” she grinned “that is so cliché” she laughed and then stepped up to the box.
“Aye – Short but feisty, better watch yourself” she spoke and took the paper. She signed the wavers. “Not responsible for injuries, sicknesses, death, pregnancy or injustice. Yadayadayada, la – la – la – whatever” she signed the lines and handed it back over.
“Need a blood sample too?” Ren held her hand out and then laughed. “Right then, tomorrow… it’s on” she followed Ayla into the street – listening to her describe the hunt. “Wild beasts… into the streets? Isn’t that… a little silly?” she chuckled “What happened to the days of putting them in a ring and putting people against them that way? Instead this puts a bit of danger to the folks living here? Man.. you city people…” she laughed and then paused.
She followed Ayla’s eyes – to the castle. “You seem distracted… what’s on your mind? Feeling off? Weird to be here and not there?” she crossed her arms and looked to the castle. “I served a King once, that is how I got my start. I was funded by one.. after time I basically became his slave. Ungrateful and demanding, angry and corrupt. I split away after some time, and ended up going my own way. A whole new life started then, but… that was quite some time ago” she laughed.
“Life on your own serving no one but you… it is… “ she laughed “Couldn’t explain it” she paused and then looked to Ayla.
“Well, Lt. It has been a lovely time, I am happy to have met you. Normally I don’t spend so much time with someone, but there’s something about you” she grinned then and then glanced to the castle. “I understand you might have a duty – I should head back to my crew. Listen… I am holding some interviews tonight for recruiting. You don’t have to interview – but I would certainly enjoy your company. If you would like to stop by, have some food – a few drinks, meet my gang, I think it would be a great time…” she held her a card then. “This will get you on the port, and onto my ship” she then stepped back.
“Hope to see you. Otherwise.. I’ll meet you at this city circle in the morning, before the hunt?” she questioned, and then nodded. “Good night, Lt.” she stepped away and then made her way back to the port….

Ayla chuckled when she spoke of city people. “Actually, the age old tradition happened by accident, it turned into a festival after that. It isn’t dangerous, the only area that the beasts are released into are business district streets, the guard goes around before the festival and puts up gates and other protective measures. It’s safe, honestly. Well, for the citizens.” She then bit her lip when Ren stated that she seemed distracted.
Ayla looked back to Ren as she spoke of the angry king. She thought of King Jonathan then, how he treated her. “I’ve never experienced being on my own.” She spoke, “The queen took me in as a child when my mother passed away…” She sighed slightly, the thought of life a different way. It intrigued her.
Ayla smiled then as Ren spoke, she looked to the card that she was handed, flipping it over in her hands, “Recruiting…” She spoke and then gave a nod.
Ayla looked up a Ren began walking away. “Captain.” She spoke. She stepped to her, “I’m not sure when the interview process begins, but there is a ball at the castle right now, most every hunter will be there. If you would like to come, all you must show at the castle gate is your ticket.” She smiled then. She held up the card. “I will be sure to make my way to the Atlas after I am finished at the ball.” She turned and walked off then.
Ayla wound her way through the city and eventually made her way to the castle where she made her way to her quarters. She slipped inside and began unlatching the leather straps of her armor. Slowly she took each piece off and set it inside of the chest at the end of her bed. She moved to her wardrobe and slipped into a beautiful blue dress that matched her eyes. The queen had the tailor come and custom make it for her, for the ball. It had ruffles that moved about the bottom of the dress. Ayla tasseled her hair and looked into the mirror before she slipped on a set of heels. She then walked from her room through the castle. The halls were silent, with the exception of the clicks of her heels. Everyone was in the grand hall where the ball was being thrown. She could hear music in the distance the closer she got.
“Ah Lieutenant. You are simply ravishing.” A knight spoke and opened the door to the great hall for her, she gave a gentle smile to him as she stepped into the hall.
Ayla looked around to all the dancing and mingling bodies. She was grabbed by her elbow and tugged along before she could turn. “Ayla!” A familiar voice spoke. “I was worried you wouldn’t come.” It was the princess. She wore a gorgeous red dress, the only red dress in the room, Ayla noted as she looked around. Usually the king and queen decided a color for the princess and no one else was allowed to wear the color. Amalliey pulled Ayla into a dance. “Where have you been all night? I looked everywhere for you.” Amalliey asked, her expression concerned.
“I went into the city.” Ayla smiled, “Your mother told me to take the night off.”
Amalliey grinned as she was twirled about. “Oh you must tell me everything.” She spoke just as she moved to the next partner.
Ayla found herself looking up to a dashing man, he had dark hair and a well kept short beard. He smirked at Ayla as he dipped her down. “And who are you?” He asked curiously, he glanced toward the princess as she was twirled about.
Ayla watched him, “Just a friend of the princess.” She spoke and smiled.
He chuckled, “Ah I see.” He moved his arm around her hips. “Are you excited for the hunt tomorrow?” He asked.
“Of course I am.” Ayla chuckled before she was moved to the next dance. This went on for quite awhile until she found herself back with Amalliey.
“Tell me everything.” The princess spoke, her voice full of curiosity.
“I will, now is not the time.” Ayla smiled. “How is the night so far?”
Amalliey rolled her eyes then and sighed. “You know the answer to that, Ayla.” She spoke, “I’m so tired of all of this…” She then moved away to the next person.
Ayla looked to the princess, she hated to see her like this. Distraught. Upset. She wished the king and queen would listen to Amalliey and aid her rather than basically auctioning her off to the highest bidder. At least, that is how it felt. Ayla kept her eye on the princess, watching those around her, keeping her safe. Making sure that she wasn’t in any danger.

Ren looked to Ayla as she walked away. A ball? She pursed her lips and then walked back to her ship. “Lando” she called out as she boarded. Lando stepped up to her.
“So, there is a hunt tomorrow… I am signed up. But also, prior to the hunt – a ball, which is tonight. Now… You’re not getting this captain in a dress – but Ayla said everyone will be there. This could be an opportunity to meet some more folks. So, I am requesting you be my date” Ren winked to Lando.
“Oh Captain, how I have always dreamed of this day” Lando swooned, and then grasped her hand. “I am so honored to be your date to this ball. Should I wear blue, are you wearing blue? I need to match” he playfully swooned and then nodded. “Very well, lets go!”
Ren laughed and led Lando back into the city. Soon they came upon the huge gate of the castle. Two guards stepped up and looked to Ren and Lando. “Tickets please..”
Ren handed her Hunt ticked, the guard reviewed it. “And this gentleman?”
“Oh this is my date” Ren wrapped her arm around his. Lando leaned over and placed a kiss on her forehead, they played the game well…like it was rehearsed.
“Right then, please enter. The ball room is down the left corridor.”
Ren grinned and led Lando inside, her arm falling from his. She brushed her arm off, as if she got something on it. “Lando cooties” she joked and came to the ballroom door. They entered the huge room – which was bustling with people. It was stuffy, warm, the music was a touch loud…
People danced, and moved about – the sounds of expensive boots and shoes clicked against the polished ground. The place was beautiful despite the crowd. “I hate crowds” Ren spoke under her breath. Lando laugh and pulled her forward. “I’m here to observe, otherwise I might barf” Ren spoke and slipped off to the side.
Somehow she was drawn to the snack table – she plucked a few finger foods off the table and nibbled on them. “Oh Royalty, and their balls, eh Land- Lando?” she glanced forward and Lando was in the mix of dancers, passing around from person to person – dancing happily. He had some serious skill, many watched in awe.
Lando suddenly grasped onto Ayla. “Oh, if it isn’t the Lt.” he chuckled and dipped her low, he then spun her, his footsteps were perfect – as if he danced for a living. “Not so bad, m’lady” he spoke in a royal tone and then twisted about. Though when it came time to trade – he did not let go. “I am being selfish, eh? One more round.” He continued to dance with her.
“Surely Ren will tease me for this, but Dancing was once a beloved passion of mine. Somethings – even the sea cannot change” he smiled and then passed her along.
Ren scoffed and plucked another finger cracked off the table, her eyes watching. She saw a red dress twirled about – the only red in the room. “Hm” she crossed her arms.
“The Good-Deed Pirate Ren, at a ball?” A figure stepped up and held his hand out. “Would never guess it. Judging by your sidelines stance – I’d say it’s not your thing” he laughed then “Waren”
Ren looked to him and then shook his hand, though she seemed annoyed. “Waren, a pleasure” she spoke and then glanced back to the crowd. “The one in the Red…”
“The Princess – quite a beauty she is. A shame she is to be wed soon, though I would not qualify for the likes of her” Waren spoke. He wore a blue suit with tassles and chords about him, his eyes watched the crowd.
“So, Ren – does the hunt bring you to kingdom? Most people would say the Glorious Ren only shows up when Danger is prone” he spoke and took a glass of wine as a waiter passed.
“Ha. Well, yes. I am searching for some new victims for the ship.” She joked and then raised an eyebrow. “Well. Excuse me…” she spoke and stepped away. She weaved through the crowd and yanked Lando away.
“Hey – you’re supposed to protect me from annoying oncomers, and here you are dancing your little boy heart away” she scolded him and then crossed her arms. “see anything?”
“Nothing at all, just a bunch of boys in suits… and women who would rather be sleeping. This is dreadful, honestly. But I did dance with Ayla – a set of feet she has” he pointed her out then. Ren crossed her arms and titled her head then.
“Something real different about her, do you feel it?” Ren questioned.
Lando looked to her, his silly expression faded. “Yes.. I do. I can only hope we can recruit her…It seems with each hour that dreadful sensation of horror and doom grows stronger. The Phase pulls on me…”
“Me too…” Ren whispered and pulled her brows together….

Ayla grinned brightly as she looked up to Lando, “Ah you’ve made it.” She smiled. She glanced around. “Where’s the captian? Or did she make you come instead?” She giggled. When he didn’t release her to the next she chuckled. “You’re quite the dancer.” She complimented. Though eventually she was off to the next partner. Eventually the music faded. The king and queen stood on the stage. Amalliey was led to the stage by two of the Royal Guard.
“It was a fabulous evening lords and ladies.” The king spoke. “I thank you for coming out this evening to kick off the festival of the hunt.” He looked over the crowd. “We have a lot of hunters this year, it should make for a good show. Do have a wonderful night, and those that are participating tomorrow, may the maker be with you.” He stepped from the stage followed by his daughter and wife, as well as the royal guard.
Ayla weaved through the crowd. She smiled when she saw Ren. “Lovely dress you have there Captain.” She winked then. She grabbed a bit of the food from the table, she was starving. Ayla watched over the crowd then, making sure that no one strayed or tried to sneak into the castle. The exits and entrances were all locked by Royal Guard. It would be nearly impossible to get passed. “I imagine the crowds aren’t your cup of tea, if cities aren’t to your liking.” She spoke and then munched on a cracker with cheese. Ayla thought for a moment before she looked back to Ren. “I hope you at least enjoyed the food.” She chuckled, “Some of the food at these balls is absolutely to die for. Oh and might I add the chocolate?” She asked.
“Lieutenant!” A voice called from across the room.
Ayla looked across the room then to see the King standing across the way. She took in a breath. “I need to go.” She gave a soft smile, “I want to come, I will do my best to be there at the ship.” She turned and walked away. She moved through the crowd and to the king. “My king.” She bowed her head.
“Amalliey has requested you.” He spoke as he stepped into the castle.
“Yes sir.” She gave a nod. “Is she in her chamber?” She looked to the king and waited for him to nod. “I will go there right away.”
“Lieutenant.” The king spoke then and touched her shoulder.
“Yes my king?” Ayla stopped.
He stared into her eyes for a long moment, he seemed as though he was searching for something. Ayla always felt that. She could see a pain in his eyes when he looked to her. “Don’t get wrapped up with any of the pirates that are in the city. I saw you speaking to that pirate. Those low life scum will use you to get into the castle and we all know what could happen from that.” He didn’t budge as he stared at her. “Do not dabble with the pirates.” He then walked off.
Ayla stood still for a moment, she took in a slow breath before she walked down the corridor and headed up the tower to the princess’ chambers. She wound up the spiraled stairs and eventually came to a short hall that led to Amalliey’s room. She knocked on the door. “Princess, it’s Lieutenant Ayla.” She spoke.
“Ayla.” She heard footsteps and then the door opened. “Come in.” She grinned.
Ayla stepped in and yawned she immediately sat down on the bed and removed the heels. “How do you wear these things all day?” She groaned. “They are horrible torture devices.”
Amalliey giggled then and shook her head. “I’m not sure how you wear armor all day.” She laughed as she moved to the balcony. “So, tell me.” She spoke as she watched the crowd move from the castle and into the city.
Ayla took in a breath, “It’s a bit of a hectic evening, you might not believe it.” She spoke before she began the story. She didn’t leave a detail out, up to and including her running into Lando. Amalliey laughed at that of course, and became very intrigued by Ayla meeting Captain Ren of the Atlas.
“Oh wow…” Amalliey gasped. “That is incredible.” She grinned from ear to ear. “I wish…I could go on the adventures that you do.”
Ayla let out a laugh. “Some are good adventures.” She gave a gentle smile. “Most, you wouldn’t enjoy what I have to do to survive.”
“Just like you don’t enjoy wearing heels.” Amalliey giggled and then lay back on the bed, staring up at the ceiling. “There were so many tonight, Ayla.” She sighed softly, her expression serious. “So many asking for my hand, asking for a chance. I feel like a piece of prime rib dangling in the wind for a pack of wild animals.”
Ayla sighed softly and gave a nod. “I know. I wish it could be different.” She spoke and looked out over the city. “Captain Ren invited me to her recruiting party.” She spoke then.
Amalliey sat up, her eyes widened slightly. “You…wouldn’t leave, would you?” She looked worried. “Ayla you’re my best friend…you can’t leave.”
Ayla chuckled, “I’m not going anywhere, it’s just a party, Amalliey. I serve you, that is my purpose, it always has been.” She spoke.
Amalliey took in a breath then and lay back. “If you want to go…” She spoke, her voice soft. “Ayla you’ve never had a life outside of what my father orders you to do…”
“Your family saved me, without the queen saving me, I would have died without anyone to care for me. I owe my life to you and the king and queen, Amalliey.” Ayla responded. “Though, I don’t want to be late…okay?” She stood, “We can talk more tomorrow, after the hunt?”
“You’ll win.” Amalliey grinned. “I know it.”
Ayla chuckled. “I’ll listen for your cheer.” She smiled as she stepped from the room. Ayla went to her quarters and changed into black skin tight pants and a dark blue tunic. She slipped on her boots that went up to just about her knee and strapped on her dagger and a short sword. Her top was cut nicely, another piece the queen had gifted to her. She left the castle and walked through the city. Looking around to the people and buildings. She eventually came to the port. Ayla paused a moment, looking around at all the ships.
“Headed to the recruitment?” A man asked, he was lanky and tall. He grinned to Ayla. “Are you sure you’re up for the sea life?” He chuckled, “You don’t look like a pirate.”
Ayla looked to him and raised a brow. “You don’t look like a pirate either.” She smirked and then nodded.
They continued on toward the ship and then Ayla held up her ticket when asked. She stepped onto the deck of the ship and looked around at the crowd that gathered for the recruitment. “And Ren said she didn’t like crowds…” She muttered to herself and let out a soft laugh.

Ren laughed and shook her head “You couldn’t pay me enough to wear a dress” She followed Ayla as they stepped towards the food. “Yeah, this table has been about my only company. I’ve been to my share of balls, and have good reason to stay away from them too but… You are here, and alas.. Lando loves to dance” she shook her head.
Just then the King shouted over the crowd. Ren looked to Ayla – pulled away against her own will… She turned then and made her out of the ball room, exiting the castle. She had toweave around the people standing about the corridor and walk ways. They wouldn’t budge for much, many turned their head and scoffed at Ren.
She grit her teeth then and finally made her way out. From there the city was quiet, night had fallen over the lands. The moon lit the city, and the cold fresh air moved in from the atmosphere. It seemed this was the quiet before the storm, everyone was nestled in bed – excited for the next day to come.
Ren made her way through the streets and soon was on her deck. Though it seemed once you left the center of the city, the suburbs and homes – the rest of the place was booming. The night owls and party-goers were rushing about. The Skag was completely full, actually there was a line to even get into the plaza…
Ren stood on her boat – a crowd of women and men stood on the deck. “Thank you for coming today!” Ren spoke, her voice loud and strong. She smiled, standing with her hands on her hips. “Tonight we celebrate a life worth living. I have invited you all here today for several reasons…Each you seem to have traits fit for the crew, at least that I could see. So, I welcome you to the great ship – The Atlas. There a few rules you should know…”
Ren stepped forward and looked about the crowd. “Fandom will not be tolerated. I don’t feel like listening to 30 minutes of you jabbering about things we’ve done. Yes. We know it. Cause we did it…” the crowd let out a laugh then. “If any of my men, or myself, give you a command – you should do it. And uh… don’t break anything, okay?” she lifted her hands.
“I will interview each of you personally, until then – we have kegs and wine, Roland will do some party tricks, and we’ll have a good time. Okay? Just… one thing. I’m only taking on 5 people, obviously there are more than 5 people here so… Don’t be a baby, okay? Drinks first – then we interview” she nodded then.
Lando waved the group on, letting them board the ship. Ren glanced to Ayla and waved her over. “You came” he smiled and walked her over to the large wooden kegs. She poured two mugs and handed her one. “I’m glad you did… are you here to visit – or to interview? Either way, I’m glad you are here…” she smiled. She glanced passed Ayla – her eyes spyed on a lanky figure.
Ren pulled her brows together and hid her eyes from him. “Hm…. I don’t recall giving him a ticket…” she whispered and pulled Ayla away, meeting up next to Lando.
“Lando – The skinny one… I did not give him a ticket… Seems we have an imposter…” she whispered. “Tail him…” she spoke and then glanced to Ayla.
“I must tell you something…come” she led Ayla up the side of the ship – headed to the bow. They climbed a set of stairs and then dropped down a small latter. It was a quiet space. “I figure you would follow best, considering your lineage.” She glanced to her and then looked to the resting sea…
“I am recruiting because the Magic Pools are stirring. The Phase whispers of a terrible evil that is coming to our future. What ever it is – it is one that will surely alter history…” she looked to Ayla seriously. “There is no prospect on this ship that could honestly provide any additional aid – except for you.” She stepped forward and placed her hands on the rails and let out a deep sigh. “Last time I felt a darkness like this – was just before the demolition of the Dragon Riders…” she straightened her back and bit her lower lip slightly.
“I know you are bound to the King and Queen… but something tells me that you way more than just a servant in fancy armor… but I’m not sure why” she turned to her and then leaned against the rail.
It was then that a sudden burst of fire came from the castle. Ren winced – the explosion was loud. “Shit” she called out. The entire ship grew quiet – Beeker climbed up quickly and pulled his scope out.
“The castle is being attacked!” he called.
Ren climbed up to the deck swiftly and grit her teeth. “We have got to get the people out of there. Men – help the civilians evacuate. Lando, Ayla – lets go” she waved them and then began running forward. She ran with agile and speed, easily shifting through the people who ran by.

Ayla smiled when Ren stepped to her. She gave a nod and chuckled when Ren stated that she came. “You asked me to.” She spoke and took a drink of her beer. She glanced to the lanky guy that came onto the ship with her. “He doesn’t fit the card very well.” She spoke as she followed Ren away.
Ayla drew her brows together as Ren seemed to move into a more serious mood. She followed her up the bow of the ship and glanced around. Her fingertips curled over the railing. Ayla listened to the captain quietly as she spoke of the magic pools. She watched as Ren bit her lip after she spoke of the dragon riders. No one truly knew Ren’s age. The books speculated. Yet, it wasn’t something that was a known fact. She bowed her head slightly when Ren spoke of her tie to the king and queen, that was a fact. She took in a breath to speak just as the explosion happened. Her eyes moved to the sound.
Her jaw loose. She took off in a sprint. She moved around other civilians that rushed into the streets to see what the loud sound was. She zig and zagged through the streets and into back alleys. Her movement was swift. She knew this city like the back of her hand, not once did she hesitate as she rushed passed the castle walls.
“Lieutenant!” A knight called he ran toward her, his armor was charred.
Ayla looked to him as he fell to his knees and collapsed, his body unable to go on from his injuries. She glanced to Ren and the others that followed. “Help everyone get out of here, I have to make sure that the king and queen and Amalliey are safe.” She took off in a sprint then. She rushed through the corridors as another explosion happened. It shook the castle walls.
Ayla gripped the wall for balance and then continued on. She pushed into the throne room then. It was then that she became frozen in her tracks as her eyes took in the scene. The queen lay on the marbled floor blood pooled around her a gaping hole in her chest where her heart once sat. The king sat upon the throne a devilish grin on his lips. She glanced around, nearly a dozen Royal Guard lay on the ground, dead…
“Ah Lieutenant. How nice of you to join us.” The king spoke and chuckled.
Ayla’s eyes fell on a demon then. He stood in the center of the destruction. His eyes were a glowing red. He cackled as he looked to her. “A pretty toy, this one.” He reached forward.
Ayla gasped as she felt a grip around her throat, she was ripped forward and slammed to the ground before the king. She coughed as the grip was released, red marks remained on her neck. The king stood and stepped down to her. He knelt before her. “Ayla.” He spoke and smiled. “This is the beginning of a new age, Askabar will own everything, we will end the dark elf king to the south and end their raids.” He smirked then. “The land will be mine.”
“The….q-queen…” Ayla choked, tears welled in her eyes.
King Jonathan smirked then, “Oh yes, that.” He looked to her dead body. “A shame my most trusted Lieutenant went rogue. Isn’t it?”
Ayla looked to him with shocked eyes. “My…my king?” She asked, her voice shook.
“Yes, and the princess is missing.” He crossed his arms. “Such a tragedy, led by a rogue lieutenant and a band of thieves.”
Ayla was able to stand then, she stumbled back, she couldn’t believe the lies that he was spewing into the air. Her breath caught in her chest. She tripped over the body of a dead knight and fell to the ground. She found herself staring into the cold dead eyes of the general of the Royal Guard. Her mentor. She scrambled to her feet just as she felt the invisible force slam against her. Ayla let out a cry as she was tossed across the room. She flew backward and crashed into the stained glass. The world seemed to slow as this happened. She could hear her pulse in her ears as she fell back through the night sky. Another explosion of fire came from the throne room and then suddenly she slammed into the ground.
Everything went dark. Silent.
Her ears began to ring and her eyes cracked open. Around her people scattered as flames came from the castle. She gasped for air as she pushed herself to her feet. She’d landed in the courtyard of the castle. Her rib cage hurt as though someone had taken a sledge hammer to each bone. She held her arms to her body and limped forward. She heard screams and glanced around to see demonic soldiers rushing into the city. “My king…what…have you done…?” She whispered.
“Ayla!” A voice called. “You’re okay!” It was one of the privates. He rushed to her and looked her over. He wrapped his arm around her waist. “You’re hurt Lieutenant….”
Ayla gasped as his arm compressed against her ribs. She grit her teeth and pulled his arm away. “Whatever the king says…don’t listen…it’s all a lie.” She spoke. “The princess is missing, I must find her…he killed the queen…to summon a demon….”
The private looked to her with worried eyes. “Lieutenant you’re not making sense…”
Ayla turned from him. She moved forward through the courtyard and pulled her dagger. She rushed forward toward one of the demon soldiers and jumped up, she slammed her dagger into the eye socket of the beast and blood squirted onto her. She pulled the dagger back out and kicked the body to the ground. Her entire body ached. She thought back to what Ren had mentioned about the pools. This…this must be it. This was the disturbance. It had to be.
Ayla rushed forward and sliced through the armor of another demon as it tried to kill a young child. She slammed the demon to the ground and her fist collided with the side of his skull. Tears rolled down over her cheeks from the pain that racked her body. She winced as she stood once again and glanced around. Where had the Atlas crew gone?

Ren grit her teeth and then nodded – she turned and she and Lando began rushing people away. Ren turned just as a burst of flames came their way – she held her hands up and a huge gust of wind snuffed the flames out with ease. She grit her teeth and turned to the castle, her eyes glancing to it. Then suddenly – from the stain glass, she saw body flying through the air.
Ren jumped into the air – a gust of wind burst from her palms and she jumped high. She landed with grace – but was not fast enough. Ayla was in the arms of a young Private. Ren glanced back to the stain glass.. a huge figure stood before it, floating in the air – a red demonic skin, huge horns, glowing yellow eyes – staring to his destruction. “Tichondris” she squeezed her brows together.
Suddenly demons began to sprawl about the city – they came up from the ground, from the water, from the sky… Ren pulled her sword and easily sliced several down. She swiftly caught up to Ayla and killed an oncoming demon that was to attack her. “We must leave” she called to Ayla. “This place is done for. Let’s save as many as we can – “ she pulled a small horn from her hip.
She held it up, and burst wind through it – a deep horn blow filled the air. Then a flare lit into the air – lighting up the docks. “Go go go, run to the docks – guide them, I’ll hold back the demons!” Ren shouted, looking to Ayla.
Lando caught up then and pulled on Ayla’s arm. “Come on – lets go. Its Tichondris – you cannot defeat him, not like this!” he put an arm around her and dashed forward. He shouted and hollered at people to follow him, before long he hand a huge band of civilians, running behind him.
Ren held her arms up and grit her teeth. A wave of demons came bum rushing her – to go after Lando, and the people. She held her hands up and a huge wall of wind kicked up. The demons ran right into it, and then was spun into the air – tossed several yards away. She focused and breathed deeply – the wall grew larger and larger – until it covered most of the district. This was the best they could do. Not everyone would make it out.
Lando shouted to the people – in moments The Atlas was completely full of people, on every inch of it. “Pull the anchor!! Release the sails!!” Lando shouted loudly. He helped Ayla up the steps and then let go of her – as he gripped onto the wheel. Lando looked to the city, from his height – he could see the wall of wind, it was grey – full of dust and dirt now. Lando looked to the other ships that were pulling out now – they were full of people too.
The Atlas pulled away from the dock and rushed forward, though without Ren – it wasn’t the fastest ship in the seas. But it was still quick…Then Lando held his hand up – a red flare burst into the sky and exploded in the air..
Ren glanced up and then gave one final push – this was an incredibly strong force of winds. It ripped roofs off of houses, up rooted trees, threw items, chairs, whatever was in the way. Demons went flying into the air, away from the port. Then Ren burst into the air. She soared through the air. Then she revealed a make-shift parachute, it was an old sail – sewn just right, that she held in her hands. It caught with air and slowed her fall. She navigated the chute and landed with a thud on the deck of her ship.
She then looked to the dozen ships behind them. “We barely made it…” she whispered and then reached for the large mast, leaning against it slightly, she was winded from her powers. Though with just her presence – the wind kicked up, the ship caught speed, along with the others behind her.
The ship was quiet, people mourned – worried, others cried. Not everyone made it out… the people on these ships.. was just a fraction of the whole city… Ren slowly made her way to the top of the ship, approaching the wheel. Lando went to move – “no.. keep it” she spoke and then looked to Ayla. “I’m sorry Ayla..” she spoke as she glanced to the city – bright with fire and flames in the dark night.
“That was Tichondris – the same demon who aided in the destruction of the Dragons…” she crossed her arms. “Blood magic… who was killed to summon him? Who summoned him.. tell me what you saw..” she spoke and looked to Ayla with serious eyes.
“The boats are leading us to Asheville, we’ll be there in about 30 mintues..” Lando spoke, turning the ship to follow the others. Ren looked to Lando and nodded…

Ayla fought against Lando. “No!” She cried though, he was much larger than her and in her condition she didn’t have the strength to fight back. She stared to the castle. “The princess…” She grit her teeth.
Everything was a blur as they moved through the city and the ship started off. It didn’t feel real. Ayla leaned against the railing, the marks around her throat from Trichondris’ grip were more visible now. Ayla glanced up as Ren floated down from the sky with her make shift parachute. She looked to the city, her eyes searching over it. She only hoped Amalliey had made it out alive. Ayla turned her attention to Ren when she spoke to her. She hesitated a moment before she spoke. “The queen.” She whispered. “Her heart was ripped from her chest…there was blood everywhere…and the king stood at the throne gleaming, as if he just signed a treaty…he rambled on about defeating the elves…” She slid to a seated position, her back pressed against the railing. “He…he aims to blame me for all of this…for the queen’s death…the princess is missing…he no doubt has her locked away somewhere…” She grit her teeth and looked to Ren. “We have to stop this Ren…we have to find Amalliey.”
Ayla took in a deep breath. “The king murdered his wife…he…” She thought then. “Blood magic…the king doesn’t practice magic…” She drew her brows together. “He looks down upon it. I was punished for weeks when he caught me using magic before…” She pulled her knees up trying to get comfortable. Her body ached. “Tell me Ren…how is Trichondris stopped? He lifted me up without even touching me, he looked at me and I was thrown across the room…” Ayla had gone on many adventures but she had never come across a being with so much power.

“He might not – but someone did…” Ren looked up to the sky and grit her teeth. “Some one with that ability – is powerful. I would likely sense their power… When we were in the tavern I could feel something, it was in the distance. The entire while I had this uneasy feeling, but not too long ago – about an hour after the ball… that feeling went away. The mage who summoned this demon is gone….” Ren looked to Ayla and then sighed.
“I will enter the phase later and see what I can find… for now we must stay alert. Tichondris the name of that demon, he is known for his relentless striking – his demons will scatter out to destroy everything in their path. The king might think Tichondris is on his side – but that is a façade. He only thinks of himself..” she spoke and then there was a horn sound. They were coming up on Ashenvale.
Ren climbed up the latter and walked the deck, weaving through the crowd of people. “Move aside – let my men prep the ship” Ren called out. The sailors untied the sails and they coasted into a dock spot. Once they were anchored and tied down – people began flooding off the ship. The entire while she could still hear the crying of family members – distraught by the events.
Ren glanced off to the direction of Askabar – a slight hue of red light the horizon. “Huddle – “ Ren called out and stepped down to the deck, she looked to Ayla and waved her over.
“Alright, well – The safest place to be is at sea. These demons are out to destroy, so they will be attracted to cities of all sizes, but their last thought is the sea. Our goal right now is to help Ayla find the Princess, who has gone missing. So, that’s what we are going to do. Sea or land… so… Ayla… uh. Any plan?”
