“Azariah!” Amalliey exclaimed, she stepped in front of her father quickly. “No, you do not understand.” She held her hands out, the fire in her eyes swirling. “He didn’t know you saved me…” She took in quick breaths, her pulse quickened. “Please, lower your weapon.”
Xavier stood behind Amalliey, he carefully grasped her shoulders. “Amalliey.” He spoke softly. “Breathe.” He moved carefully and lowered her hands, his eyes looking into hers. He waited a moment until the fire in her eyes settled. He then turned to Azariah. “I apologize, Azariah, I know what burden I brought upon the Circle.” He shook his head, he stood before her. “I’d lost something very dear to me and I could not focus, if I had stayed, I would have made a grave mistake…” He looked to Amalliey. “I knew that from afar I could watch my daughter grow.” A small smile curved up the edge of his lips. “I could protect her in a time of need, and I did, I…” He crossed his arms then. “King Zowrey has his army after you, bounty hunters, Azariah.” His eyes were serious. “He has named you in in the murder of Queen Elanor.” He paused a moment to allow that to sink in, “And he has named you as the kidnapper of Princess Amalliey.”
“He pinned everything on you, Azariah…” Amalliey spoke softly. She held a flyer in her hand. A wanted poster. It had a rough sketch of Azariah on it. It was very detailed beneath, speaking of how she broke into the castle and killed the queen in the early evening hours, how she’d done it in front of the king and killed all of his best knights. Then, it spoke of how she’d grabbed Azariah and taken her from the kingdom. It read that the king wanted her alive, but would do with her head, though the reward for capturing Azariah alive was much higher.
Xaiver took the flyer from Amalliey and held it toward Azariah. “I’m sorry that I ever doubted you Archmage.” He bowed his head to her slightly. “When I heard the news, I didn’t want to believe it. I was certain that it was trickery. Then, when I got word from one of my dear friends that boarded that ship you were on that you were spotted among the travelers with another woman and a knight…my suspicions began to rise…”
He turned and sighed softly. “You are headed to Alexandria?” He asked. “Amalliey told me you are looking to gain information from Lendon’s office…she also told me that the gate lord has been summoned….” He furrowed his brows at this. “I live in Alexandria, I will protect you and offer you a safe place, if that is all that I can do.” He looked to Amalliey, he looked to the pendant that pulsed a blueish color then. He furrowed his brows. “Amalliey?” He asked. She was staring off, her expression blank.
**
“Xavier…” Elanor spoke, “My love…” She whispered softly. Tears welled in her eyes. “I knew he’d disappeared from the Circle…from the tower, they searched for him…I feared he was killed…but to learn he left because of what I did…” She bowed her head and then looked to Amalliey.
The world around them was frozen. Xavier stood, his back to Azariah. Azariah stared to his back. Amalliey looked to the queen. “Mother…” She spoke softly. “You…you had no choice…you’ve met father…” She then shook her head. “The king, he is a devilish man with a heart full of greed. All he has ever wanted is power. Now…he has it.” She crossed her arms.
“Xavier knows how to free me.” Elanor spoke as she touched his cheek. She stared into his eyes for a long moment. “He can get me back, Amalliey.” She kissed his cheek then before she stepped to Amalliey. “Let him do what he must, together we can stop the gate lord…” She spoke softly before she disappeared.
**
“Amalliey!” Xavier rushed forward as she collapsed. He pulled her up into his arms and looked to Azariah with furrowed brows. He shook his head and looked back to his unconscious daughter. “Elanor…” He spoke, his tone angry. “You never taught her to control her magic…it’s taking a toll on her body.” He carefully set her feet on the ground and held her close to his body. Her head lulled to the side against his chest. Xavier placed his hand over her head and whispered a few words in the ancient tongue. A white glow came from his hand for a moment until he pulled his hand away.
Amalliey’s eyes opened and she stood quickly, she took in a quick breath and looked to her father. She then looked to Azariah. She looked back to Xavier. “You can save her?” She asked softly. “You can free her spirit?” She held the pendant with her right hand. “Father?”
Xavier gave a slow nod. “I can attempt it.” He spoke and searched her eyes. “Though, it could be a dangerous path. I’m not sure I am ready to place you under such a stress, Amalliey.” He crossed his arms as he stared to his daughter. “Let us head to Alexandria…” He looked to Azariah. “We need to come up with a way to disguise you, Archmage, or before long we will have a whole brigade of soldiers after us…and if the gate lord finds out what Amalliey is, if he doesn’t already know, his army will be breathing down our necks before we can even blink.” Xavier looked to Amalliey. “You can’t allow Ryuk to push you into summoning him, okay?”
Amalliey bit her lip. “Father…I…”
“You have to focus, I know it is hard, he is an incredibly strong dragon. But Azariah and I need to work with you, we need to get your strength up, you can’t collapse on the battlefield, that will get you killed, as well as Ryuk.” He turned his eyes to Azariah then, “Where are the other two men that were with you?” He rose a brow. “The knight and the elf.” Xavier was wise, and he had his ways of knowing things, of finding things out. “Still at the bridge?” He asked with a smirk. He grabbed a cloak that hung on the wall. “Wear that.” He smiled to Azariah. “We will figure out a better cover once we get to my home in Alexandria.”
Amalliey looked to Azariah as her father stepped from the room. She stepped to her and smiled softly. “Thank you, Azariah.” She whispered. “I owe my life to you already, and yet, you keep rushing after me…” She shook her head. “I will try to be better…I will learn, I promise…” She then followed her father. They stepped into the streets of the city winding back and forth through the alleys. Soon they were walking toward the edge of the bridge.
“Princess!!!” Lionel ran from the bridge toward her. His sword still drawn. “Release her bandit!” His armor squeaked as he ran. The water had caused it to stiffen.
Xaiver looked to the knight and chuckled. “You may want to oil your hinges after taking that plunge.” He smirked.
Lionel looked to the princess and then he saw Azariah’s face shrouded in the cloak. “Azariah…?” He asked and furrowed his brows.
“Sir Lionel, put your sword down.” Azariah spoke as she stepped forward to him. “This is Xavier.” She paused for a moment and looked to her father. “He is my father.” She nodded. “He means no harm.” She then looked to Tyrelian and took in a breath.
Xavier looked to the elf for a long moment. “Tyrelian.” He spoke, he knew him. “Come on then.” He spoke and led them through the city. He walked next to his daughter all the while, being sure to keep her safe. If he spotted a guard he would usher the group into an alley. Soon they were at the train station, it was a two hour ride on the train to Alexandria. He paid handsomely for them to have a private cabin. Soon they sat in the coach that was plush and even had a buffet of food.
Amalliey sat down, her body still exhausted. She looked to Azariah. She felt so helpless. She couldn’t fully control her magic, in all honesty it controlled her. If it wasn’t for Ryuk on the ship, she’d be dead, she couldn’t even swim to save her life. What would happen when they met a foe? She fumbled with her hands slightly.
Lionel looked around the cabin and gave a smile. “Now this is a cabin fit for the princess.” He spoke as he stepped up and made himself a plate of food.
Xavier stepped to Azariah, he searched her eyes. “Thank you, for protecting Amalliey, Archmage.” He spoke and bowed his head slightly. “You’ve protected more than just my daughter. Though, I know that you’re already well aware of this.” He smirked. “I only wish Elanor wouldn’t have secluded Amalliey so much, I wish she would have trained her…” He shook his head slightly.

Azariah’s Scythe disappeared and she stepped back. She crossed her arms as she listened to Xavier speak. Some kind of anger boiled up within her it was a combination of a little of everything. “I am not surprised the King pinned it all on me. It wouldn’t be hard…” she spoke and then looked over the flyer. “I see…” she handed the flyer back.
It was then that Amalliey suddenly gave out. Azariah went to rush forward – but Xavier had beaten her to it. “I would love to curse the Queen for what she did or didn’t do, but unfortunately it means nothing now. We will have to make do with what we have…” she spoke and then sighed softly. Azariah came back to easily with the help of Xavier. They had a connection – she could tell. Their magic flowed well together…
Azariah watched as Xavier left the room and Amalliey thanked her. “Save your energy… I don’t think it will be the last time I do” she joked weakly and then pulled the hood over her head. As they walked forward – Lionel rushed forward…
“Master Xavier” Tyrelion bowed his head and followed behind the group. It wasn’t long before they were on the train, entering their private cabin… The grew entered the cabin, but before Xavier could – Azariah pushed on his back and passed the door. They entered the next private cabin and she shoved him down into the seat.
“Xavier..” she spoke through her teeth. “You have some audacity to suddenly just appear” suddenly her hair changed. It turned into a fire red color, and was cut short, a pixie cut. Her jaw changed – more rounded, her cheek bones became a little stronger, her style of eyes changed, the color too. She looked nothing like she did.
“You are a selfish coward” she spoke and stepped back. “You left the Tower and I was shoved into your role – the tower was so cruel to me that I had to assemble a completely new persona. No one knew how to cope from your loss, and I was their punching bag. Then, not to mention, you had a daughter? The entire Tower had no idea – you know the rules too. Archmages cannot have children, clearly because they’re a great weakness for our enemies. Then of all daughters to have, a Princess? Are you kidding me? You knew that she would likely be one of the most powerful mages this world has seen and you rid yourself of her? I mean, what the hell were you thinking?!” she threw her hands out.
“History has some crazy stories, this could easily been one of them. But you would have had – you could have trained her, you could have taken responsibility. So you both were scared, scared of who? Some King and his men? You think that the world hasn’t delt with worse? You had the entire Circle on your side!” she was shouting at this point.
“I cannot fucking believe this shit. This girl grew up without you, and then you think you can swoop in? You better have a god damn good excuse, or else I’ll toss you off this fucking train and the world can mourn you one more last time” she was furious, but she was holding herself back. Something… within her… just lost it.

Amalliey sat in the cabin, she looked out the window and watched the steam float from the engine of the train. The words that Azariah had spoken to her, it stung. Though, she knew it to be true. She was a damsel in distress. She did nothing but slow the group down, yet she held the key to defeating the gate lord. Why her? Why did it have to be her that held the power to stop the gate lord, why couldn’t it be Azariah? It was certainly more fitting for it to be Azariah, rather than her…a princess that hadn’t seen the outside of the city walls, barley even the outside of the castle walls. She’d been so secluded. Her father was over bearing, he wouldn’t allow her to dabble in magic, much less fighting. She wasn’t allowed to learn any of that. She was only to be a lady. So that the man he found for her would be pleased with a lady, rather than a brute of a woman. At least that is what he’d told her.
“Princess?” Lionel asked as he sat before her in the booth. “Are you alright?” He asked softly.
Amalliey looked up to him, her eyes sad. She blinked a few times and shook her head. “I need air.” She spoke and stood.
“Princess, wait…” Lionel spoke as he walked from the cabin. He sighed and looked to the plate of food in front of him. “No good knight…” He muttered to himself.
**
Xavier sat as he was pushed down he looked up to Azariah, his eyes full of surprise. His jaw loosened as she changed before him. He stared to her with shock written on his face. He sat silently through her accusations. He took it. Deep down, he accepted it. “It was Elanor’s choice.” He spoke, he didn’t move from his seat as he looked to her. “I had no say in the matter, I fought with her for months over it, after she initially left me, I wrote her letters, I went to every celebration…for six years…I wasn’t allowed in her life.” He stood then, “I was a danger to the Circle. The Grand Master wouldn’t have backed me. Not over something like this.” He stood before her as she threatened to push him from the train, to kill him. “If that is what you want Lynn…then do it. I understand how angry you are with me. I am sorry, I never meant to hurt you. I didn’t know the Grand Master would push you into my place…I…”
**
“You better have a god damn good excuse, or else I’ll toss you off this fucking train and the world can mourn you one more last time.”
Amalliey heard the yelling from within another cabin. She furrowed her brows. The voice sounded familiar. Then she heard the male voice.
“If that is what you want Lynn…”
It was Xavier’s voice, she knew it. Amalliey slowly pushed the door of the cabin open. Xavier stared at Lynn, his eyes sad, he hated what he’d done. If there was anything that he wished more he wished he’d never let Elanor take Amalliey from him, but he succumbed to her, he listened to her wishes. He searched Lynn’s eyes and turned slightly, he hadn’t noticed Amalliey at the door. “It wasn’t the king we were afraid of, to answer your question. It is the elves that are hellbent on making damn sure the dragons don’t return. Elanor was an Azazel Mage and we knew that there was a high possibility that Amalliey would become one. The castle was her best bet for protection against the elves. Elanor wanted that and no matter what I said to her she just…” Xavier paused, the floor had creaked from Amalliey taking a step forward. He looked to her and took in a slow breath.
Amalliey looked to this woman she didn’t recognize. She stared to her father a long moment. Her eyes filled with confusion. The train whistle sounded as it began to move forward, chugging along. Amalliey took in a shaken breath, her hand on the doorway still. “I apologize.” She spoke before she slipped from the doorway, she left at a quick pace down the hallway.
Xavier grit his teeth. “I can not take back what I have done.” He looked to Lynn, his brows pulled together. “I’ve watched Amalliey every moment of her life, it was from a great distance, but I was there, even hidden in the crowds. I was there for her first ball. I was there for her 16th birthday celebration. I have always been there, forced to hide in the shadows.” His voice was angry. “When I left the magi I did it because I was afraid of bringing my troubles into the circle. My sadness had overwhelmed me and it was beginning to show in my work, the Grand Master had noticed on a few occasions. I made a rash decision that I only regret because of the pain it has caused you, Lynn. I never wished any of this to happen.” He crossed his arms. “So would you like to toss me off the train now? We should be up to speed.” He pulled a dagger from his belt. “Go a head, take it.” He held the hilt in her direction. It was a beautiful dagger with very detailed work within the wooden and metal hilt.
**
Amalliey stood outside of the train cabin. She stood on the small balcony that was between each cabin. Her fingertips curled around the fencing. Tears welled in her eyes. She felt so helpless. So lost.
“Amalliey…” Her mother spoke, she stood next to her on the train. “Do not fret.” She spoke and brushed away her tears. She pulled her into a warm embrace. “Your father is a good man, I only wish I hadn’t been so blind. It is my fault alone that you were taken from him, I didn’t allow him to see you, I wouldn’t. I was afraid. I caused this.” She spoke softly, “I’m sorry.” She whispered.
**
“Princess?” Lionel stood behind her outside of the cabin. “Princess, it is dangerous out here, please come inside.” He spoke. He stepped forward and touched her shoulder.
**
Amalliey let out a cry and fell to her knees. Elanor rushed forward. “Amalliey.” She spoke and looked around.
“Princess?” Lionel stood within the dream. He looked around to the world around them, which was fuzzy and full of waves, he looked to his hands he was almost like a shadow in this world. “Queen Elanor?” He asked, his eyes widened, he stared to her, his jaw loose.
Elanor stepped to him, Amalliey remained on her knees, she held her head. “You need to go, Lionel.” She took him and shoved him back toward the cabin. He disappeared from the dream. “Amalliey…” Elanor rushed back to her and leaned down. “I’m sorry…” She whispered as the world faded out.
**
Lionel fell back, his back pressed against the cabin door. He held his hand to his head. “Oh…what just happened?” He groaned.
Amalliey gripped the railing, she fell to her knees, blood dripped from her nose. She took in quick breaths. “Lionel…” She whispered.
“Princess?” He asked and moved to her. He knelt at her side. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know…I…”
“No…don’t apologize.” She spoke softly, her voice was hard to hear over the wind and the sound of the wheels on the tracks. “Please…help me…” She looked to him, it was hard to hold her head up. Her power pulling him into the dream with her mother’s spirit, it caused a jolt of power, it drained her down.
Lionel only nodded. He carefully wrapped his arm around her, his armor was stiff. He then lifted her and held her there for a moment. She leaned heavily against him, her head lay against his chest plate. “I’m going to lift you up, Princess, I don’t believe you can walk like this.”
“Okay…” Amalliey breathed, her eyes fluttered slightly.
Lionel scooped her up and carried her into the cabin. He moved quickly through the train and eventually came to the cabin that they had been assigned. He slipped inside and set her down on a bed that was within the cabin. “Can I get you anything?” He asked as he grabbed a handkerchief and wiped away the blood from her nose.
“Water.” She whispered.
Lionel nodded. “Of course.” He spoke and stepped quickly away. He returned with the water and helped her sit up. “Here.” He offered it to her. He kept his hand around the glass as he helped her drink it. “Now rest, Princess.” He searched her eyes. He pulled a blanket over her as she turned onto her side and curled.

Lynn looked to Xavier and reached for the dagger. She lifted it and threw it against the wall – its blade stuck into the wall, sticking straight out like a pin. “You truly are dense” she spoke and then sat down across from him, her legs crossed. She didn’t say anything for a long moment – and she let out a sigh. “You can’t even tell when someone just needs to yell” she chuckled and shook her head. “You couldn’t tell then either” she leaned her head back.
“Remember… when I was 14… and I wanted to participate in the Magi Duels, but you wouldn’t let me. I screamed and hollered… but then when I finally stopped… I was okay… I couldn’t participate because I was too strong, you feared I would kill someone” she chuckled. “Sometimes… we just need to yell…” she stood and then pulled the dagger out of the wall. She turned it and handed it back to him – hilt first.
“I’m not going to say I’m sorry, because I’m not” she spoke calmly. “but… everyone makes mistakes, we think we are doing the right thing – but we’re not. And you can’t ever tell until the action is long gone. I know this.. and I don’t hate you. I just needed to yell at you because… it felt good” she smiled and then held her hand down, to help him up.
“Now is your opportunity to make up for it all. You are a powerful mage… we could use you in this fight. And.. Amalliey needs you the most. I can train her, but her instincts will control her. The only thing more powerful than instincts is emotions. You… are her father.” She spoke and then turned towards the door. “Lets go to them now… I’m sure I’ll have much to explain” she stepped out of the cabin.
She turned and walked into the cabin with the others… Lionel and Tyrelion glanced up. “Is that….” Tyrelion stood and tilted his head. “Lynn Brandel?” he questioned and crossed his arms. “Wow.. an honor” he bowed his head. “So Azariah was just a cover then?” he noted – as Lynn wore the same attire.
“Indeed… When I assumed the position of Archmage I create a secondary identity so that I could perform undercover missions…” Lynn sat down on one of the plush benches and leaned back slightly. “Which is perfect, considering Azariah’s face is wanted…” she spoke and chuckled.
“I don’t understand.. Lynn Brandel is a popular person?” Lionel questioned, confused.
“My mother Lynnith was a very famous and powerful mage… many say I look a spitting image of her, and I followed her footsteps. Just about every mage in the world knows Lynnith, which meant they knew me…” she crossed her legs and then glanced to Amalliey. “Hm…” she looked to the door as Xavier stepped inside…
She then pulled out her book and opened to the page where she left off – reading quietly as the train rolled onward.
***
After 2 hours the train’s horn went off and it came to a stop. People passed their cabin to get off, and soon they did too. They walked through the Train port… the city was bustling wildly, people were every where. They squeezed through the crowds and finally was able to exit. They stood in the center of a huge street – looking high to the tall buildings. Though people tried to wedge past them and get by…
Tyrelion stepped forward “Form a line, let’s move swiftly. Most have finished their deeds for the day and are rummaging home or to the trade market… Xavier’s home is in the Magi District… let us head there” he spoke and lead them forward.
They passed several blocks before making a right. Before them was a small bridge, which went over a canal that cut through the city. It seemed each district was actually sectioned off by the canal – making it rather easy to navigate. They crossed the bridge that was easily 15 people wide.
This section of the city had a slight blueish haze to it, the buildings were round and slender – sort of representing the Circle of the Magi, or the Tower of the Magi – the circular theme was present in the style of architecture. There were very unique shapes and angles to the buildings and such. Many of the buildings connected via tunnel like bridges on the 4th floor, to the next one over. It was a unique sight.
This part of the city was quiet and not as busy, they could walk as a group rather than a line. “Alexandria is a melting pot of cultures and people. There are many areas of town dedicated to them, such as this is for magic dwellers. There is another for dwarves, elves… so on” Tyrelion nodded and they came to a smaller tower, that was maybe 3 stories high.
“Xavier… did you work with Lendon much? I would imagine he would have traced the Azezel mages to you. Did you aid him in his studies?” Tyrelion questioned as they entered Xavier’s home. “I worked with him briefly, mostly we bumped into each other often in the libraries and we would discuss our studies and findings…”
Lynn looked to Amalliey briefly. “Are you okay?” she questioned and placed her hand on her back. “Perhaps we can take some time at Xavier’s and I can train you some…hm?” she questioned and then they stepped inside…

Xavier stood silently as Lynn spoke to him his eyes looked deeply into hers. He let out a soft chuckle when she spoke of when she was 14. “You were so hellbent on performing in the duels…” He then shook his head. “You have always been one to voice your opinion, Lynn.” He listened to her then as she spoke of mistakes. What was done, was done, there was no turning back. He couldn’t rewind the clock nearly 24 years, when Elanor left him and banned him from raising his own daughter.
“I wouldn’t expect an apology, you’ve every right to be angry.” He took the dagger back from her and watched as she exited the room.
**
Amalliey’s eyes cracked open for only a moment, when Lynn came into the room. She looked to her tiredly, her eyes were glassy. She let her eyes slip back shut as she listened to everyone speak, she listened to Lynn’s explanation. Though soon enough, the words became silence as she slipped back into a deep slumber.
Xavier came into the room and looked to Lynn, he stared to her for a moment, watching her read before he walked over to Amalliey. He leaned down and pulled the blanket up to her chin and carefully tucked it around her. He stared to her for a moment before he moved to his own seat and sat down. He stared out the window, thinking of the past, thinking of how life would have been if he hadn’t let Elanor take her, or if he hadn’t left Lynn to fend for herself at such a young age.
**
When the whistle of the train blew Xavier moved to Amalliey’s side, he brushed her hair from her face gently. “Amalliey.” He spoke, his voice soft. “We are in Alexandria.”
Amalliey’s eyes fluttered open, she was still exhausted. Her body wanted her to sleep. She slowly sat up and nodded. “Okay.” She spoke, her voice soft. She walked within the group, near the middle. She stared up to the buildings and looked around as they moved through the city.
Xavier took in a small breath, “I did.” He replied to Tyrelion. “I worked rather closely with him for awhile after he found me. Though, I didn’t tell him about the princess, nor did I tell him that Elanor was indeed an Azazel Mage…” He pushed the door open to his home. It was cozy. There was a large long couch to sit upon that was rounded and pushed against the wall. It was a large living space. He stepped into another room and came out with an old leather book, it was tattered and old. “Lynn.” He spoke and held it toward her. “This is Lendon’s journal, when he became ill, when his mind was no longer what it once had been. I took it. In an attempt to keep Amalliey safe.” He looked to his daughter. She was looking at a bookshelf in the living room, looking to all of the leather-bound books.
Amalliey grabbed one and thumbed through it when Lynn placed her hand on her back. She looked to her, her eyes torn. “I…” She searched Lynn’s eyes for a moment. She then shook her head. “I am okay.” She closed the book. “I would like that.” She gave a nod and then a weak smile. She then looked back to the book, it was a book on the Azazel Mages, it was old took, a lot of the pages were torn or missing. The edges of the book had been burned at one point. Amalliey looked to Lynn for a moment longer. “I want to be more than a damsel in distress, I want to help.” She shook her head, “I can not let this control me, and yet, I am allowing it to control me. I have no control…” She whispered at the end. Her eyes glassy. She took in a sharp breath. “I…” She shook her head and shut the book, it clapped shut. “I just don’t understand.” She spoke and stepped away. She pushed through the door that led outside where she sat down on the stone staircase. She looked out to the city, up to the tall buildings. The clouds in the sky rumbled slightly.
**
Lionel looked to Lynn. “I think this is a lot for her to take in.” He spoke, “Her entire world has changed in just a few days…I’ve never seen the princess so…” He pondered for a moment, “Sad really, she seems rather sad…” He watched Lynn for a long moment and shook his head. He looked to Tyrelion then. “So, you’re going to help us get into Lendon’s huh?” He asked. “Where is it?”
“It’s in the old district, where the magi once resided. It’s across town from here.” Xavier spoke as he poured himself a glass of scotch. He swirled it in the glass for a moment before he drank it. He looked to the front door, he wanted to comfort Amalliey, but he didn’t know what to tell her. He then stared at Lynn for a moment, thinking of the times with her as a child. The times they stood in the courtyard, the challenges he gave Lynn to strengthen her. He led her to become a well rounded mage, and then he’d abandoned her. Just as he abandoned Amalliey. He took another drink from his glass as he looked out the front window at Amalliey as she sat on the stairs looking through the old book.

Lynn took the book and looked at it.. “Perhaps Lendon found something that can help…” she spoke softly and slipped the book into the side satchel that rest against her right hip. “Amalliey told me something that peaks my interest, perhaps you know more… Her dragon said her destiny was to ‘Free the other spirits’…” she stepped over and poured herself a small glass of scotch.
She took a sip and smacked her lips “Ah… Dwarven Mountain Scotch, about… 100 years old or more, the same ol same ol drink of choice, hm?” she leaned against the counter slightly and looked to him. “I know that the Dragons are one of pure magic essence. They cannot be truly destroyed, and yet they have been absent for so long. I have a feeling I know what ‘freeing the other spirits’ means, but I wonder how… how were they trapped to begin with?” she finished her glass and set it down.
“I’ll let you ponder that, should you figure the answer… I am sure we would all like to hear your thoughts..” she turned and walked to the door. She opened the door and silently closed it, where then she sat down on the stair step next to Amalliey. It was silence for a long moment… and then Lynn spoke.
“I was 16 when I became Archmage… the second most powerful person in all of the Tower… The demands I faced were beyond anything I had ever performed. A for a solid year – I failed at every task I was given… I couldn’t juggle them all. I was so… taken by my emotions.. I was sad and angry all at the same time. For the longest I felt useless, but the pressure was never relieved. I begged the Grand Master to demote me, to maybe even remove me from the Tower…” she leaned back slightly and looked to the sky..
“I felt ashamed, I dishonored my people… and I was mad at myself…” she chuckled “I was a bundle of emotions” she looked to Amalliey for a moment and then back out. “Pressure Makes Diamonds… the Grand Master used to always tell me this…” she glanced to Amalliey.. she moved her arms so they rest on her knees and she rocked back and forth very slightly.
“I may seem like… I have my stuff together but.. half the time I’m bullshitting” she laughed. “I read so much because I don’t know anything…” she watched a few people walk by. “At the end of the day… I take my boots off and climb into bed just like the person next door…but if I learned anything from being shoved into my position… If you act like you’re a pro, eventually it’ll just become you” she smiled then and shook her head.
“I could say… every perfect word but you’re not going to feel any better. Time is really the only thing that will help… but hey…Your real dad is here, your mom is in your locket, and you have a new dragon pet. That’s pretty cool right?” she chuckled and then grew silent for a second..
“People are going to hunt us, demons should be arriving soon, we’ll be trekking through havoc filled lands… trying to find answers, trying to discover things, discover ourselves… At times it will feel like it’s all your fault, or like now.. Xavier is overwhelmed with guilt, other times it’ll be all me… we’ll all struggle… but.. we’ll struggle together” she spoke and then slowly stood.
“Just remember that…” Lynn then stepped back inside and then made her way back to the living room.
“The night Is coming soon… perhaps we should go to Lendon’s tomorrow.. we’ve been traveling a while, Amalliey’s has been through a lot… rest would be nice” Lynn leaned against the frame of a door way, which actually lead into the kitchen.
Lionel had just finished a yawn and nodded “Yeah… that sounds nice… I can sleep on the couch.. the ladies can have whatever guest bedroom you have..”
Tyrelion smiled “I think I will be off… My home is just a few blocks away… I will meet up with you tomorrow morning. I have the authority to enter his study within the castle… I will help guide you, if for some reason you come across some troubles..” he bowed his head. “A pleasure Archmage Lynn, Master Xavier, Sir Knight..” he then stepped out of the house.
“Good night Lady Amalliey.. I will see you in the morning…” he then rummaged through his pack and pulled out a small envelope. “Some Peacebloom… it’ll sooth your magic, help you regenerate.. make some tea with it..” he handed it to her and then stepped away…

Xavier smirked as Lynn poured her own glass. He remembered the first time she’d done that, she’d always wanted to try the drink so one evening he held a glass to her and told her to pour herself a glass. He remembered her face, he’d chuckled at her. It was an acquired taste, that was for certain. “Free the dragons…” He thought for a moment as he watched Lynn walked toward the front door.
**
Amalliey glanced to Lynn and then looked back out over the city. She hugged her knees to her chest, as she fought back tears. She listened, though she didn’t speak. She’d never been put in a situation like this. Her worries before her mother was killed were which dress to wear to the ball, and which royal nobleman did her father wish for her to speak with and dance with. How should she speak. How should she act. It was all a charade. Her entire life. Now though, now she felt as if the weight of the world was upon her shoulders, as if everyone was relying on her. Though, everyone was. Everyone was relying on her to banish the gate lord. What if she failed?
She listened to what Lynn had to say, though she didn’t speak, she didn’t reply. Lynn was right, everything could be put perfectly, yet she still felt this emptiness inside, she felt this overwhelming crushing feeling.
**
Xavier finished his glass of scotch. “No need to sleep on the couch Sir Lionel.” He spoke and then nodded his head to Tyrelion, “I will see you in the morning friend.” He spoke. “Lynn, I have a room that you and Amalliey may share.” He gave a gentle smile, “And I also have a room for you Lionel. As well as some oil for your armor, we may want to find you something in the market, something that doesn’t scream that you are a knight from Askabar, hm?” He chuckled slightly. “Come on.” He led the two a spiral staircase and down a hallway. His home was much larger than it appeared. He pushed a door open to a small bedroom that held one bed. “There you are, Lionel.” He nodded.
“Thank you, Xavier.” He bowed his head and then stepped into the room.
Xavier led Lynn down the hallway and around a bend to a door that he pushed open. Inside were bookshelves filled with old books as well as two beds and a lamp between them. Upon the nightstand were two picture frames. “I never forgot you, Lynn.” He spoke. One of the pictures on the nightstand was of him and Elanor, the other was of him hugging Lynn, they both smiled. The artist had drawn them perfectly and given the red to her hair life. He wore his Archmage robes in this picture with her. He’d kept every picture that he had of her and him together, as well as he and Elanor. “Rest well, I will show Amalliey to the room as soon as she is ready. Good night Lynn…” He spoke he stood in the doorway for a moment a weak smile on his lips before he shut the door and stepped off.
**
Amalliey looked up to Tyrelion as he stepped outside. She looked to the envelope and then gave a nod. “Thank you, Tyrelion.” She spoke, her voice was soft, it shook slightly. She sat there on the step, staring out at the city as the sun slipped over the horizon, creating pinks and oranges in the sky. She shivered slightly as the chill of night began to set in.
“Amalliey.” Xavier spoke, he stood in the open doorway. “Why don’t you come inside?” He asked and stepped to her. He offered his hand down to her.
Amalliey looked to him and took his hand. He was so strong, it felt like he lifted her effortlessly. She stared up into his eyes for a moment before she turned and headed back inside. Xavier had lit a fire in the fireplace, it crackled and popped happily. She looked around the room, she held the envelope close to her chest. “Where is everyone?” She asked and looked to her father.
“They are upstairs, in bedrooms, resting.” Xavier spoke as he stepped over to the fire and poked at the log. “What is that you have there?” He asked, curiously.
Amalliey looked to the envelope. “Tyrelion gave it to me…he said it was um…” She thought for a moment. “Peace flower?” She said in a question.
“Ah Peacebloom.” Xavier stepped forward. “Let me make you some tea, hm?” He held his hand out.
Amalliey nodded and handed it to him. She sat on the couch and stared into the flames of the fireplace, watching them dance about. She thought of Ryuk, his power. She then tried to remember when he’d forced her to summon him in the ocean. It was still blank. Her memory of the event seemed non-existent.
“Here you are.” Xavier stepped to her and held a mug toward her. “Just what the doctor ordered.” He gave a soft chuckle as he sat down. “I like to mix honey into my Peacebloom tea. I think you will like it. A little honey, cinnamon, a dash of nutmeg and a splash of milk.”
Amalliey looked to the mug and took in a breath, she took a sip of the tea and then smiled. “This is incredible.” She looked to her father.
“It will help you recover.” Xavier nodded. “How many times have you summoned Ryuk?” He asked.
“Twice.” Amalliey responded.
“Do you remember any of it?” He poked at the fire again.
Amalliey shook her head. “No…what I do recall are his eyes, only the first time I summoned him, when I bound myself to him…I don’t even remember how I did it…I just remember I collapsed onto the ground and he was there, staring into my eyes…then I can’t remember anything else.”
Xavier nodded, he had a glass of scotch in his hand, he took a sip from it. “I see. He is the most powerful dragon of the Azazel Mages, it is incredible that he has chosen you, though, it makes sense, he was your grandfather’s.” He smiled then before he cleared his throat slightly, “Lynn said that Ryuk said that you are to free the other dragons?”
“Yes…he said I am the key…” Amalliey took another drink of her tea.
“Did he mention anything further than that?” Xavier asked.
“I…I can’t remember…” She shook her head and sighed softly.
“That’s alright, Amalliey, we will figure this out.” He gave a gentle smile. “Elanor’s spirit is in your necklace, that necklace, was hers…her dragon is in there as well.” He spoke and moved next to her. “May I?” He asked. Amalliey nodded as he grasped the pendant carefully. “I just want to see if I can even attempt this yet…” Amalliey felt a tug, a strange feeling, she couldn’t describe it. Her grip on the mug tightened, her breath caught in her chest. Xavier’s eyes closed and a gentle glow came from his palm. Amalliey’s eyes began to swirl with fire, her pulse quickened. She let out a soft whimper and then she dropped the glass. What was left of the tea splashed onto the ground as the glass broke into tiny pieces. Xavier released the pendant and moved in front of her. “Amalliey…” He breathed, he searched her eyes. He held her shoulders as she waivered slightly. He grimaced as he watched the fire swirl within her iris. “I can’t save her…not yet.”
Amalliey held the pendant, her eyes stared into his. “What…did you just do?” She breathed.
“You are bound to this pendant.” He spoke softly. “Your mother gave it to you at a young age, and bound you to it with her magic. It is as much a part of you as your magic is. It responds to your magic. I can’t free her from the pendant until you are stronger…and even then…” Xavier sighed softly. “We will figure it out, just as we will figure out how to free the dragons spirits.” Amalliey gave a slow nod. She watched as her father wiped up the tea and cleaned up the broken glass. He then held his hands out to her. Amalliey stood and hugged him for a long moment. It felt incredible to finally be in her father’s arms. The king had never hugged her like this. She’d never felt welcomed, or loved by him. She was merely a pawn to the king. But, with Xavier, she could feel his warmth, she could feel his care. “Come on then, you’ll be tired soon.” He gave a gentle smile. He led her up the stairs through the home and down the hallway where he gently pushed the door open. “Good night, Amalliey.” He spoke softly.
Amalliey hugged herself to her father again. Even though she’d never met him. Something about him felt familiar. Was it because she held her mother’s spirit? She pressed her face into his chest for a moment before she released from the hug. She then stepped into the room. She sat down on her bed and looked to Lynn. She looked to the books around the room and took in a slow breath. It was then that her eyes fell on the picture of Lynn and Xavier. She lifted the frame and looked over it, a soft smile on her lips. “What…was he like?” She asked and looked to Lynn as she set the picture back down. She lifted the image of him and her mother and stared to it. Amalliey really did have traits of both of them, a perfect meld. She traced her fingers over the image for a long moment. “The king, was cold.” She spoke, her voice soft. “I was always his prize, an object that he held up high, yet he never gave any attention to. He ordered me around…he never loved me like my mother did. He locked me away like a trophy, he made sure everyone knew what he had, yet…he wouldn’t let me out into the world…I was a prisoner…”
Amalliey gave a weak chuckle. “I’ve only known my father for a few hours, and in those few hours I feel like I’ve known him…like I’ve met him before…” She shook her head. “He treats me a lot like my mother did…something I never thought I would feel again when I saw her die…” Her eyelids were becoming heavy. "Please, tell me about him, Lynn..." She whispered softly as she leaned against the wall, she sat cross-legged on the bed and stared to Lynn with curious eyes.

Lynn pulled her book back out of her satchel and opened it to where she left off. She had a feather in her hand and was scribbling on the sides, notes and comments. She flipped the page and then let out a sigh – part of the page was smeared. Lendon’s palm must have grazed the ink before it could dry. She flipped to the next page and continued to read.
Her eyes lifted as Amalliey stepped inside… she lowered the book and smiled weakly as she observed the pictures. For a moment she felt… sad. Lynn grew up with Amalliey’s father… and Amalliey did not. She listened to what she said about the King, and how her mother loved her very much…
“Xavier…he was…” she thought for a moment and then chuckled. “I was born into great talent and power… my parents they… released me to the Tower and left. I had no mother.. no father. The Grand Master wasn’t sure how to raise a child… but they knew that I would one day lead the Tower. So, from the moment I was born – I was on a path of training, to one day become the Grand Master. So they put me in the care of Xavier, the Archmage at the time…” she sighed softly.
“He was very caring… tending to my bruises… healed me through my fatigues. Every day I’d come home from training completely wiped, much like you are today. I suffered through the Fatigues for 10 years before they didn’t know how to push me any harder… at 10 years old I had become stronger than the mages that trained me. So from a baby to 10 – I didn’t see Xavier too much, he had his things to do and I just trained with the school..” she crossed her arms.
“But then they assigned me to him, I traveled with him, I went with him on every task and journey – I shadowed him. It was then that we bonded, he trained me harder than the school ever could. He was… harsh when he was training me, but kind and gentle after hours. He knew what it took to become powerful, but also knew the importance of balancing the emotions. He knew I needed a father…” she closed the book and set it on the side table.
“The way I think an act… it is much like him. He taught me my moral compass, he taught me how to dive deeper, think harder – look further. He was never one to give up, and I tried to absorb that trait from him… Whenever I’d ask a question he would spin me into more questions until I answered it myself. Whatever I was wrong – he’d walk me through every view, rather than punishing me directly. There was never a second I wasn’t learning…” she paused briefly.
“When I think about it now I… I had a great attachment to him, as he did me.. but there was something missing. And only now do I see it – as I watch him with you. He adored me, and raised me, but now I know what it was… I was not his daughter. I’m not saying he wasn’t kind, but… that emotional link…” she chuckled then.
“I think everytime he looked at me… all he saw was you – and that can be painful. He told me… earlier… that he watched you every second of the way. I am only 3 years older than you… I think he left because it hurt too much to be around me, and watch you from a distance. I imagine… like he was betraying you with every second he was with me… I… I now understand.. the pain that could have been. He left because he needed to separate himself from me, so he could finally come to terms with losing you. Otherwise it was…16 years of torture..” she shook her head.
“He is the closest thing I have to a father, and I could only wish that he truly was my father. But I know… now that he is in your life… you’re very lucky. He might not have been there… but he’s here now. I’d.. give anything for that… even now… it feels like we are co-workers, acquaintances…When I was a child I… “ she paused. “I’m sorry… I am supposed to be talking about how great and wonderful he is” she chuckled and shook her head.
“I guess I’m…. a little distraught too. I thought he was dead.. and now he is there. And you’re here. And I’m realizing everything, you know. It all…makes sense now” she bit her lip and then sighed.
“He was a great father… He would get up at 4am and make me breakfast, leave it wrapped up in the oven, and then go to work. He would stop by and bring me lunch while I was in school… and then he’d come home late at like 8pm and scramble up dinner, stay up for 3 or more hours or so – just talking to me. We’d talk about what books I had read, what I learned, theories and ideas… and then he’d tuck me in… Probably around 11 or 12… and then wake up and do it again… he… always made time for me. And if I ever needed him.. it was like he already knew I needed him” she smiled then and then pulled her blankets up.
“I think… I would not be who I am today without him… and… I’m sorry I absorbed that from you…” she reached over and turned her lamp off – so only Amalliey’s lamp was on. “It’s …. Kinda weird” she fluffed her pillow and rolled onto her side – her eyes looking over Amalliey.
“What about your mom? What’s it like to have one of those?” she smirked then and watched her…

Amalliey watched Lynn as she spoke, she could see her eyes light up as she spoke of Xavier. Of the times she’d spent with him. She chuckled in the moments that Lynn would chuckle, a soft smile on her lips. She then shook her head. “Lynn, do not apologize for having him.” She searched her eyes, “As you stated, you would not be who you are, without Xavier.” Her smile was warm, it brought her happiness to hear about him, to hear what good he’d done for Lynn. If things hadn’t played out like they had, if her mother hadn’t forced him to leave her, then would anyone have been there like Xavier was for Lynn? She was willing to bet that the answer was no.
“Thank you for telling me all of that, you answered my question quite well, actually.” She spoke as she sat there. She held the book in her lap that she’d found in the bookcase downstairs. Her thumb rubbed the edges of the pages. “My mother was very caring, from the moment I can remember.” She spoke softly. “She used to take me into the study, and she told my father she was teaching me arithmetic and history when in reality we were practicing magic together. She didn’t train me like you were, she didn’t push me like you were, but I at least learned how magic feels. I learned to heal, that is my strength. Actually at a very young age a knight came back from battle and my mother told me to heal him. He was unconscious, so of course he doesn’t remember me healing him. But…I remember the look of amazement when I did it. I healed all of his wounds effortlessly. The next day my mother gave me her pendant.” She thought for a moment.
“I cherished the moments I spent with my mother, for even though I lived with her in the castle, my father always had assignments for both of us. I was to be learning how to speak, how to walk…and my mother was to be tending to other matters…” She shook her head. “My father always had my day pre-planned. Each moment was part of a tight schedule. I looked forward to my afternoons with my mother, it was a time where I could relax. Where I didn’t feel judged. She spoke of the world outside of Askabar. The light in her eyes when she’d speak of her adventures before she became the queen…she gave up everything when she had me, including my father…” She fell quiet then.
“On cold winter nights my mother would heat me up a cup of hot chocolate, she would sprinkle marshmallows on top and come to my room. We would sit on my bed and drink it as we either watched it snow, or looked up at the moonlight from my bed.” She chuckled slightly, her eyes welled up as she thought of her mother. She missed her…
“She was a strong woman.” She nodded, “She stood up to the king quite frequently…and she suffered for it, but she protected me, she loved and cared for me…” She slipped beneath her blanket and held onto her book. “I miss her…” She whispered the last bit. She stared at the cover of the book a moment before she set it on the nightstand and turned off her light. She turned onto her side and shut her eyes. It didn’t take long before she drifted off into a deep slumber with the help of the Peacebloom tea.
**
The next morning the smell of breakfast wafted through the home. Xavier was in the kitchen preparing pancakes and eggs, bacon. He flipped things around. He even had a pot of pressed coffee on the stove. He had a smile on his lips as he prepared the food. It reminded him of when he would make breakfast for Lynn when she was younger. He placed everything onto plates before he served them on the table. Xavier came up the stairs and he knocked on Lionel’s door. “Breakfast is ready.” He spoke through the door. He then stepped down the hall and knocked gently. “Good morning.” He spoke as he cracked the door. “Breakfast is ready for you two whenever you’re ready.” He then stepped away.
Amalliey rubbed her eyes. She felt like her head had just hit the pillow, she slept without dreaming, without interruption. She took in a deep breath and looked over to Lynn. She felt refreshed. She didn’t feel weak anymore. She gave a gentle smile as she sat up. “Breakfast huh?” She spoke, “I bet he looked forward to cooking you breakfast.” She smiled sweetly then for a moment before she slipped her boots on and headed from the room. She stepped down the stairs and found Lionel at the table with her father. They were chatting quietly amongst themselves, nothing important, just morning chatter. She stepped to her father and hugged him gently from the side. “Good morning.” She spoke with a gentle smile.
Xavier looked to her, a loving smile on his lips. “You look so much like your mother, Amalliey.” He spoke as he took a sip of his coffee. “As I watched you grow I was always amazed at how beautiful you were.”
Lionel grinned. “She is beautiful huh?” He looked to Amalliey. “The most beautiful princess in all the land.” He chuckled and then took a bite of his food.
Xavier shook his head and let out a chuckle as he watched his daughter take a seat. “Did you discover anything in that book?” He asked.
“Oh…” Amalliey shook her head. “I haven’t found much, a lot of it is damaged..” She muttered softly.
“Yes, with the old books, especially those of the Azazel Mages you will find they are torn, faded, burned….any of the books that the elves found are long gone. They didn’t want anyone to free the dragons and they covered their trail almost flawlessly. I only hope that Lendon has something on where the spirits are…I imagine that once we find them you’ll know how to free them. If you don’t know, Ryuk does.” Xavier spoke and gave a nod.
Amalliey took a bite of her food. “We will find it.” She gave a nod. “I’m certain.”

Lynn smiled as she spoke of her mother, just about her last sentence – Lynn had drifted off to sleep. The next morning come abruptly. She sat upward when there was a knock on the door – Xavier spoke through it. She glanced over to the two pictures… she slowly stood then and stretched. She gathered her thing… put her boots back on and picked up her book…
It wasn’t long before Amalliey was awake, but by then Lynn was already in the hallway, headed to the kitchen. She sat down quietly at the table and accepted a cup of coffee that Xavier handed her. Lionel looked to her and smiled “Good morning Archmage” he spoke with a chipper voice.
Xavier chuckled and flipped a pancake. “You ought not bother her so soon, she is a fiery dragon in the morning, only calmed by coffee and eggs” he spoke and grinned. Lynn looked to Xavier and scoffed.
“He’s right though… take your voice about 3 levels down” she spoke and then pulled her book out. She sipped her coffee while looking over a page, just one hand holding it open against the table. She glanced up as Amalliey walked in, but then looked back. She listened to their idle talk, their smiles and comments.
“Lendon talks about an Elven Mage named Vikor… who lead the attack against the Dragons and Azezel mages. He was able to trace down that Vikor is from a large Elven city named Yoknvale…to the north, in the mountains” she glanced up to Xavier who held a spatula, glancing to her.
“Yoknvale is an ancient city, it was destroyed during the Dragon Wars, likely just a pile of rubble now…” Xavier spoke and flipped another pancake.
“We have a name… and an ancient ruins. That’s a start…” she spoke and then closed the book. “But more than likely this is common knowledge in the Elven world… I think if Lendon knew anything major that he would have made that knowledge more accessible. All we are going to find is his notes, bits and pieces that he hadn’t put together yet, and likely holes we would need to fill… Lendon is a smart guy though, I imagine by the time he passed away – he exhausted all of the resources he had. If we really want to get down to the details – as fast as we can – we need to get into an Elven mind, either get into their libraries, or I don’t know… kidnap an elf, something…” she pondered aloud and sighed.
She had easily finished off her coffee, and Xavier had poured her another. “Thank you…” she spoke and then leaned back. “So we dig through Lendon’s notes and figure out what we can, but my gut says he’s not going to have much about the whereabouts of some locked up souls, if he even found out about it. Hell… he was trying to learn any thing he could when… we had some Azezel mages living amongst us” she chuckled and then bit her lip.
“What about Elanor? She is in your locket right? She will know more, right? I mean, you two are both old as sin… She has to know something… yeah… maybe we’re focusing on these old scribblings too much – when we should be looking at how to communicate with Elanor more? Is releasing her an option? I mean… she would have to be bound to a body, or object, or else her soul would slowly become corrupted…” she crossed her arms for a moment as her eyebrows pulled together.
“Yes.. her spirit could not linger forever. We would have to bind her to something that would allow her to act freely. The only things I really know about are Soul Stones, from the Warlocks to the south… but I do not know what kind of capabilities she would have in them, we’d have to find out… Otherwise we’d have to find a body” Xavier pitched in.
“I am not sure how correct it is to find a dead body for her animate within… I… I don’t think that would play out well. The mind could easily go crazy, and then she would be trapped within the body. I.. that’s not quite the kind of magic I do…” she spoke.
“Nor I…” Xavier added.
Lionel stared to the two – completely lost. “Wait. So.. you’re saying that I wasn’t going crazy? The Queen… is with us? Lingering around like a ghost?”
Lynn looked to Lionel and then sighed. “Do they teach you knights anything? Or do you just swing your sword at stuff?”
Lionel shrugged and then nodded “Well… I mean… All you mages are off at the Tower, instead of training tin heads like me so… You tell me” he laughed and then sipped his coffee.
“There has to be an answer some where…. Obviously Azezel mages are much like their dragons… their spirits can handle more. I’m not sure if that means Azezel mages are infinite like dragon are but… Wait… so if Elanor was alive that means her dragon was around too, right? Dragons can reanimate their bodies if released… what if we bound her soul to the dragon itself… but … where’s her dragon?”

Amalliey looked back and forth as Xavier and Lynn spoke. She munched on her food and sipped from her coffee. “I don’t think binding her to something is what needs to be done.” She spoke softly. “She’s already trapped…”
Xavier looked to his daughter and gave a nod. “I can’t separate Elanor from Amalliey until she is stronger, I tampered with her pendant last night and it worried me…” He ate some of his pancakes then.
Amalliey looked to Lynn, “My mother’s dragon is within this pendant too…along with Ryuk…she bound this pendant to me…” She spoke softly and then continued to eat.
Xavier took in a breath as he thought. “There is a way, just not any way that I know of yet.” He gave a smile to Lynn. “You have to think of the soul of an Azazel Mage to be much like the soul of the dragon they are bound to. They may be released from the shell of their body, but eventually they will come back. There is no stopping it.”
Amalliey’s fork clattered to her plate then, her eyes swirled with fire, her brows quivered. She took in a shaken breath. Xavier stood and stepped to her, he looked to Lynn for a moment before he looked back to his daughter. He took in a slow breath. “This may hurt, Amalliey.” He spoke before he placed his hand over hers. He shut his eyes and took in a swift breath as the blue light of his magic filled his eyes.
Lionel stood, his eyes wide. “He…he’ll hurt her…” He looked to Lynn. “I…that’s how she got hurt last night…she was in that trance and I touched her…I didn’t know…”
Amalliey’s face contorted and filled with pain. Her eyes squeezed shut and she took in an uneven breath.
**
“Amalliey?” Xavier stood in the shadowed world. He spun around. “Amalliey?” He asked.
“Father…” Amalliey was collapsed on her knees, she held onto the pendant. Tears streamed down her cheeks.
Elanor held her. “Shh, it’s okay.” She whispered. She stood slowly. “Xavier.” She rushed to him and wrapped her arms around him. Her lips pressed to his. “I’m sorry.” She searched his eyes. “I…”
Xavier held her close for a moment longer before he pulled from her and moved to his daughter’s side. “Tell me Elanor, how do I get you out of this without losing you again?” He asked as he pulled Amalliey into his arms, his blue magic flowed from him into her, he was trying to protect her from the pain.
Elanor stood before him. She touched her hand to Amalliey’s forehead and whispered a few lines of ancient words. Amalliey fell limp. “Lendon has the spell, he just never knew it.” She spoke quickly, “I don’t have much time. I know that it is within one of his journals when he was searching for information on the Azazel Mages, I’ve seen it before….” She took in a small breath. “Xavier…” Her eyes welled with tears.
“I will find a way, my love.” He whispered, he looked to his daughter in his arms. The world around them was beginning to fall apart. “What of the dragons? Do you know where they are trapped? How to free them?”
Elanor only shook her head. “Ryuk…he knows…” Her voice was distorted. She reached forward and cupped his cheek. “I know where it is, it is cold…snowy…iced over.” She leaned forward and pressed her lips to his once more before she faded away.
Xavier clutched onto Amalliey as they seemed to fall through space. The air warmed around him and he heard the low rumble of a growl. He turned and found himself staring into the eyes of Ryuk. The dragon looked to Amalliey’s limp body and then to him. She is the key. We must protect her. His voice spoke. Xavier took in a shaken breath. The world was tearing apart around him. She can’t take much more of this, Xavier…you are testing her limits…you’ll kill her.
Xavier focused on giving more of his energy to his daughter. “Tell me…how…to help…” He spoke through grit teeth.
I can not. Only Amalliey may know, for she is the key.
**
Amalliey’s eyes rolled into the back of her head, she whimpered and her body trembled. Blood dripped onto the edge of the table from her nose. Lionel paced, his eyes wide. “Lynn…what do we do?!” He asked nervously. He looked to Xavier whom stood next to his daughter still, his hand clamped tightly over hers.
In the next moment Xavier’s eyes opened, blue energy filled his eyes and slowly faded away. He moved swiftly and caught Amalliey as she collapsed to the side, he held her against him. He hugged her body to his for a moment as he placed his hand over her forehead and whispered a spell in the ancient tongue once more. A drop of blood came from his own nose. His power was being put to the test with this risk he’d taken. He shakily carried Amalliey to the living room and set her down on the couch. He took in a long breath and stood. He brushed away the bit of blood and then turned, his eyes fell on Lynn. “Lendon knows how to save Elanor.” He spoke softly. “He wrote the spell in a book somewhere…she said she’s seen it…” He grabbed a cloth from his kitchen and wiped the blood from Amalliey’s nose. “Ryuk wasn’t much help…he seemed rather angry that I tried such a stunt…” He sat down next to Amalliey and took in a slow breath.
Amalliey’s eyes fluttered open. “Father….” She breathed. She looked to him and moved slowly, sitting up with his help. “Did…you…”
“Yes.” Xavier spoke. “I tried to speak with Ryuk…but he wouldn’t speak to me…” He looked into her eyes. “I’m sorry, Amalliey.” He hugged her gently. He’d hoped Ryuk would be more helpful, but he the dragon was known to be stubborn.
Amalliey hugged her father, her eyes fluttered. “It’s okay…” She whispered. She leaned against him heavily for a few moments until her strength began to return. “Lendon’s…?” She asked.
Xavier nodded, “Yes.” He helped her stand. He looked to Lynn. “Let’s go, hopefully we can find a piece to the puzzle to point us in the right direction…”

Lynn looked over to Xavier as he reached to Amalliey – “Xavier – no” she went to reached forward and stop him, but he had already touched her. She leaned back in her seat and sighed, her eyes looked to Lionel who was freaking out. “Lionel… It’s okay.. Xavier is powerful, he wouldn’t do something that would hurt her…” she stood up and watched..
It was over quickly – Lynn watched as Xavier lifted Amalliey and carry her into the living room. It was then that Tyrelion stepped inside, his eyes looking to the Princess. “Everything okay?” he questioned and stepped forward. He poured himself a cup of coffee and watched Amalliey recover.
“Oh, you want to go now? Yeah.. sure” he guzzled the rest of his coffee and nodded. “Okay then, let’s get ready..” he smiled and lead them to the door. They all stepped into the street and Xavier locked the door behind them. “When we enter the castle… let me do the talking. Some of the Royals can be… snobby” he spoke and waved them forward.
They traversed through the Magi District streets and stepped over a bridged, the Castle was just a skip away. This district was elaborate and decorative. Every pillar and statue was etched and carved out with precision and art. It was extremely clean, and breath taking. They walked to a central area, where all of the trees came together. A huge water fountain.. Through a huge arch was a beautiful garden, that led up to the huge castle.
“Wow…” Lynn whispered and then followed Tyrelion as they walked through the garden. At the gate stood two guards. They bowed their head “Master Tyrelion, we are pleased to see you again. Who… are these people you bring with you?” the guard spoke, looking to his crowd.
“No need to be concerned… They are delivering an important artifact, which the King requested a few months prior…I will be taking full responsibility of their visit” Tyrelion nodded and then the guards let them pass.
Lynn followed and they entered the giant castle… They winded down several huge hallways until they were in the far eastern corner of the castle. “His office is just up this tower… the third floor.. Come on” he waved them and they entered the spiral stair case. They traveled upward until they came to the exit, and into a small hallway. “This is it..” Tyrelion dug through his pocket and pulled out a set of keys…

Amalliey leaned on her father as they walked through the city. As they made their way into the garden that led to the castle her strength began to return. She gave a weak smile to her father and pulled from his grasp. “I’m okay.” She spoke softly as she looked to the beautiful statues and the well trimmed hedge art. It reminded her of home. She plucked a small white flower from one of the hedges and brought it to her nose, a smile curved up her lips. It was a white lily, Elanor’s favorite flower. It smelled just as beautiful as it was.
Xavier gave a chuckle as he looked to the flower. “I spent a good four hours one time picking a bouquet of those for your mother.” He watched his daughter as she continued on, she’d only given him a nod and a gentle smile in return to his comment. She was deep in thought it seemed. Guilt racked his conscious as he thought of her, how she’d grown up beneath that horrible king…how terrible he’d been to her. He then shook his head, the time to step forward from the past was now, he was here with her now, he needed not to think of what he’d done wrong. What he’d missed. He only needed to think of now and the future.
Amalliey watched as Tyrelion pushed open the door to Lendon’s office. She stepped forward into the room, her jaw loosened, the lily fell from her fingertips. “Father?” She asked softly. She looked around the office, it was a complete disaster. The window to the balcony was left open, broken in a panel that was next to the lock.
Xavier glanced around the office, his heart sank. The slight breeze pushed a few of the pages around on the floor. The entire office looked as though a tornado had blown through it. There was a pile of items in the center of the room that had been burned. “The elves got here, they broke in…the security in this city is so lackadaisical.” He crossed his arms.
Amalliey pulled open each drawer on the desk, all were empty. She moved pages about, glancing over them. Her eyes welled with tears. How could they even find an answer within this mess? She moved around and brushed soot from the cover of one of the books. “Azazel Mages.” She spoke softly as she made out the charred words. She opened the book and it crumbled within her hands. A few pages remained, but the words were charred and nearly unable to read.
Lionel rummaged through a few things. He pulled a dagger from a shelf. He flipped it around in his fingertips, it was well balanced, light, easy to use. He then turned his attention back to searching for a journal, a book that mentioned anything of the Azazel Mages.
“This is useless.” Amalliey muttered softly.
“Not entirely.” Xavier spoke as he pulled on a book that was still within a bookcase. It looked untouched by the people who had caused the destruction. Only a few remained on the shelves like this. “They missed a rather important piece.” He spoke as a shelf slid out of place. A set of stairs led down from where they stood. “Lendon never kept anything too important up here. His real research is down here. Hopefully they didn’t discover this, it doesn’t seem they did.” He spoke as he stepped down a staircase into a smaller room. It held bookshelves along the walls as well. The desk was untouched.
Amalliey stepped down behind her father. She looked around the room. “How did you know?” She asked softly.
“I worked closely with Lendon, remember?” He gave a smile, “Come on, lets see if crazy old Lendon knew where the dragon souls are, hm?” He walked around the small office and began looking through the books.
Amalliey’s eyes fell on a huge map that was hung on the wall with pushpins pushed into it. She stepped to the map and glanced over it. There was a huge star where they were. Then he’d placed pins in several locations throughout the world. She looked to one of the pins, it was over the castle in Askabar. Did this mark places where he thought that the Azazel Mages may linger? She crossed her arms and took in a deep breath, trying to decipher the map as she looked over the patterns. Several push pins were placed in the mountains far to the north. A place that not many traveled. The cold lingers there. Her mother’s voice rang in her head. She turned to see her mother standing behind her, the world around her froze. “Where?” She asked softly.
“To the north.” Elanor stepped to the map, she pointed to the several pins in the mountains. “It is dangerous there.” She spoke and looked to her daughter. “Many have died trying to scout it. The storms are unforgiving, the cold is frigid.” She shook her head.
“Is this where the souls are?” Amalliey asked she looked to the map, to all of the other pins. There wasn’t a pattern to the pins, not one she could make out at least.
“It may be, or it may not be…” Elanor shook her head and sighed. “Lendon seemed to think so.” She stepped away to a book shelf and pulled a book out she flipped through several of the pages. “See?” She held the book to Amalliey. Lendon explained that the souls were trapped, that was the only explanation for what was happening. The imbalance in the world was caused by magic and locked away souls. Elanor stared into her daughter’s eyes for a moment. “Good luck, Amalliey.” She whispered.
Amalliey stumbled forward, the book in her hand. She gasped and leaned heavily against the bookcase.
“What is it?” Xavier asked, he rushed to his daughter’s side/ “Are you alright?” He asked and then looked to the book in her hand. “What’s this?”
“Mother wanted me to have it…” She took in shaken breaths. “I’m okay.” She nodded to her father and held the book toward him.
Xavier looked over the book, he brushed the dust from the covers and then he opened the book. He looked over the scribblings and began to read through the words. “Hm..” He hummed as he looked through the book. “This is interesting, Lendon was trying to track down the souls, he knew of them.” He searched through the pages and sighed. “This book is full of a lot of gibberish, this must have been written toward the end of his life.”
“There has to be something.” Amalliey took the book and moved through the pages carefully. She stopped on a page and nodded. “Where is Mist Haven?” She asked.
“Mist Haven?” Lionel pipped up. “That is a dangerous place, princess…”
Amalliey looked to the knight, “It seems everything that is around me is dangerous in one way or another, I’m a danger to myself.” She spoke and then looked to her father. “Lendon said that answers should be found in an old tomb in Mist Haven. See?” She held the book toward him.
Xavier looked to the scribblings, he took in a breath and gave a nod. “It is quite a ways away…Lionel is right it is a very dangerous place. We have to travel through a forest that has killed many. I even haven’t dabbled there, powerful mages have gone into that forest to never return…”
Amalliey gave a nod, “If answers lie within this place, then we have no choice. The gate lord is bound to send his soldiers after us at some point, so what is the difference? If we sit still we will be in danger as well…”
Xavier stared into his daughter’s eyes. “You’re as stubborn as your mother.” He smirked and then looked to Lynn. “Lynn, have you found anything of use?” He asked curious. “Anything on the spell to free Elanor?”
Amalliey looked to Lynn with hopeful eyes.

Lynn stepped into the room and she let out a sigh. “Shame…” She walked around the rummaged room and lifted a stray piece of paper. The ink was worn, it was not legible. She set the paper down and looked around the room hopelessly. “If they tore this room up… then they know who he was, and what he was trying to do. This means that at some point – they will be expecting us…” she spoke and watched as Xavier uncovered the hidden room.
“That seems very Lendon like… he trusts no one, hardly himself..” she spoke and followed them into the next room. This room was well kept, organized. Everything except his desk – which was a havoc of papers and books. She lifted a book off the desk and turned it in her hands. “I have always been admired for my research abilities but I never could understand… how he could bury himself into books and scrolls for hours on end…” she looked to the candle on the desk.. which was melted almost to the very bottom. The wax had dripped onto the table… holding a few pieces of paper down to the desk…
Lynn moved and sat down in the seat, her hands resting on top of the papers. Her eyes looked down to the last thing he was working on. “He left… expecting to return..” she turned the page of the note book. His book had at least 40 or so empty pages, he had just started it.. she flipped to the front of the book, the first page.
“The process of binding a spirit to a dragon is not repeatable, it is an instinctual spell brought on by the dragon itself. It is unique to each dragon, like an imprint to it’s human. Many trials where Elves tried to replicate this magic were performed – but to no avail. In their discovery, however, they were able to discover a different kind of Spirit Binding Magic.” She flipped the page – her finger over his letters as she continued to read out loud.
“The art of Spirit Binding became so expanded that it was then discovered a Genre of magic. Only certain mages had the power to manipulate Souls…. They discovered a way to splice souls and bind them to objects, and then eventually completely bind the souls to objects. Today the practice of magic is performed by the Warlocks of Harber-Grove. Had I enough time – I could discover who lead the development of Spirit Binding, and what their true purpose was. All of my notes conclude that the Elves sought for an eternal destruction of dragons, but could not over power them. The second best solution was to Bind them to an object to which they could never be released… All I could find on the binding spell was the term ‘Provinck Valinthor’ which is Ancient Elvish statement for – To become one with eternally, once used in the old wedding practices…” she sighed softly.
“So we only have half of a spell… Provinck Valinthor is the act of binding the spirit, but not releasing it. If the Elves made it that easy, then we should find someone can translate…. The act of releasing, perhaps… more than likely – in the function of a Divorce…” she plucked the book up and slipped it in her bag.
“Lendon was the last of the Circle who took the time to understand Ancient Elvish, no one I know bothers. Xavier… do you know anyone?” she questioned.
Xavier pondered for a moment and then crossed his arms. “I know someone…. But we would have to do a lot of work to get them to bother. Celindra Teragosa – She is an old Elf who I once was acquaintanced with. But we went our separate ways, for separate reasons – we didn’t really… agree on everything. If we go to her… she will surely make us pay, in some form, for her duties. She lives off in a forest, frolicking with the Forest Fairies and like…” he scoffed slightly and sighed.
“It sounds like she is our only choice… So we figure out the spell with Celindra’s help… and then we head north to discover where these souls are…” Lynn spoke and then nodded.
Tyrelion looked to them and nodded “Fair choice… I will lock this secret door with a spell. Should you return – you would need to find me to unlock it…” he spoke… They shuffled out of the room and the bookshelf shut in place. He held up his hands and a small chime came from the door – it locked and sealed. “It is done… Now that you have what you desire… I should escort you out, before I have to answer to anyone else” he chuckled and nodded.
Lynn looked to Amalliey and smiled “See, answers” she stepped forward – her eyes glancing to the pendant. For a moment the scene flashed before her eyes… She had both hands in Elanor’s chest, slowly lifting her heart out.. her hands were covered in bright red blood…
Lynn paused and gripped her head, it began to pound and she felt dizzy… She squeezed her eyes shut for a moment and then let out a sigh.
“Are you okay?” Xavier spoke, looking to her. He had never seen her waver before..
“I need to meditate… The spell I had cast… for the demon… When I performed it – I became the gateway for the Demon, thus.. part of me was in the portal, partially in hell itself. I think… my magic is slightly tainted. I need to make sure…” she suddenly collapsed and her body began to seize.

Amalliey moved and sat across from Lynn as she read through the book. She watched her as she spoke, her eyes curious. She then looked to her father when he was questioned on someone knowing the ancient elvish tongue. She watched the dissent in her father’s expression when he spoke of the elf. Amalliey smiled as she looked back to Lynn, “Thank you.” She spoke as she stood. Amalliey turned and furrowed her brows when Lynn waivered. “Lynn?” She asked just before she collapsed. Amalliey broke her fall and held onto her as her body shook. “Father!” She cried, her eyes full of fear.
Xavier leaned down, he grit his teeth. “Damnit Lynn.” He spoke, he held his hand to her forehead and his magic engulfed her body for a moment, soothing the quakes of her seizure. “We need to move, Tyrelion.” He scooped her up and ran forward behind the elf. Lionel followed in suit right behind the princess.
“Father what’s happening?” She questioned. Though Xavier didn’t answer. He rushed through the streets of the city and soon they were back in his home. He rushed inside and set Lynn down on the couch. “Shh.” He brushed her hair from her face. “It’s going to be okay, Lynn.” He spoke as he moved over to a cabinet, he opened the doors and looked through several glass jars of liquid.
“Father?” Amalliey questioned. She looked to Lynn, fear in her eyes. She then stepped to Lynn and knelt next to her. “Lynn…” She spoke, her voice soft. She reached up with her hand then, her pendant began to pulse a white glow. Her eyes swirled with the flames of a fire.
“Amalliey wait!” Xavier spoke as he came toward her with a jar filled with a mixture of the liquids from his cabinet. “Don’t!”
Amalliey brushed the hair from Lynn’s eyes once more before her hand rest over Lynn’s. Suddenly she felt an overwhelming sensation, she couldn’t breathe. Her eyes widened and then it felt as though she was sucked forward. She let out a scream as she toppled into a world full of shadows. It was hot and sticky. Amalliey scrambled to her feet, her eyes glanced around to the world around her. “Lynn?” She paused, her voice echoed. “Father?!” She called.
“No one can save you here.” A deep voice snickered.
Amalliey turned, her eyes fell upon the demon, the gate lord. She stared up to him, her pulse bounded within her chest. Flames swirled within her eyes, she balled her fists and fire covered her fists. “Where is she?” She asked, her voice strong. “What have you done with Lynn?”
The demon snickered, “Puny mage, you’re no match for my power. Why do you even waste your energy?” He reached forward.
Amalliey felt a choking sensation, her feet lifted off of the ground. She gripped at the air as she fought to breathe. “Ryuk beri- nin o hi raug.” Her voice was broken as she spoke in another language.
The demon’s eyes widened slightly as he stared at her. He then began to chuckle. “You had me worried for a moment.” He gripped more tightly.
Then suddenly a burst of flames came from Amalliey. She fell to the ground and behind her the huge dragon Ryuk appeared. He snarled at the demon and rushed forward. He pinned him to the ground with his great talons and in an explosion a fire ball came from Ryuk’s mouth. Amalliey was thrown back several feet. She tumbled and let out a cry. She grit her teeth as she lay there. “Ryuk…” She breathed. The dragon was soon at her side. “Where is Lynn?” She looked into his fiery eyes. Ryuk let out a cry. He scooped her up and they took off into the black sky, racing over the lands. Fires raged everywhere beneath them. Suddenly Ryuk dove down toward the ground and came to a skidding stop. Amalliey was released from his talons. She stumbled forward. “Lynn…” She breathed. She rushed to her side. “Lynn.” She placed her hand on her cheek. “Lynn wake up. Come on.” She shook her gently.
“Amalliey…” Elanor’s voice spoke and looked to her.
Ryuk knelt down near them, his breath was hot against Amalliey’s back. She looked to her mother, fear in her eyes. “How…do we save her?” She asked. “We have to save her…” She whispered.
Elanor gave a gentle smile and took her daughter’s hand. She began to speak in the ancient tongue as she placed their hands over Lynn’s chest. A beautiful white glow began to emanate from their hands. Amalliey found herself speaking the spell too, the words came to her easily as if she’d recited it a thousand times. The light grew stronger and stronger until all of the shadows and darkness that surrounded them disappeared. Elanor smiled to her daughter. “You are a great mage, Amalliey.” She spoke as she disappeared into dust.
Ryuk let out a snarl before he burst into flames and disappeared as well. Amalliey looked around at the world around her. She felt a hot fluid on her arm, she looked down to see her blood drip and land on her forearm. “Lynn…” She breathed as the world faded out.
**
Xavier paced as he watched his daughter. Her eyes were rolled back in her head, her nose had begun to bleed shortly after she touched Lynn. “Do something…” Lionel spoke, distraught.
Xavier shot him a glare. “I can’t very well do anything until she comes out of this.” He spoke quickly, “I…I told her not to do this…” He grit his teeth.
Amalliey let out a cry of pain, her eyes glowed bright for a moment, her pendant pulsed. She then fell forward, her body collapsed. Her head rest on Lynn’s side. Her body trembled. Xavier rushed forward, his eyes searching over her. “Amalliey?” He asked, he touched her cheek. “Amalliey, look at me.” He touched his hand to her forehead, his blue magic syphoned into her. "Amalliey can you hear me?" He looked to Lynn with worried eyes. "Lynn?"
Amalliey's eyes fluttered open, she took in a deep breath. She raised her head slightly, her hand still gripped onto Lynn's. "Lynn..." She breathed.
Xavier looked to her, his face full of shock, he didn't know how she was conscious after what she'd done. He furrowed his brows and brushed blood from her face. "Amalliey...you..."
"Father...I'm okay." She gave a weak smile. "Is Lynn?" She asked, her hand gripped a bit more around Lynn's hand. She searched over her.
"Let's get her to rest hm?" Xavier spoke. He stood slowly and scooped Lynn up in his arms. "Come on then." He carried her up the stairs and to the bedroom where he tucked her in gently. He looked to Amalliey then, whom had followed him silently up the stairs. "That was crazy...to do that...you know?" He asked. "Dangerous..."
"Father...Lynn has saved my life...I owe her everything." She spoke as she sat on the edge of the bed. She brushed Lynn's hair from her face again and sighed softly, her eyes filled with worry.
Xavier crossed his arms and sighed softly. "You just...need to be careful, Amalliey..." He spoke and watched her a moment. "I'll go make some Peacebloom tea...let's hope that she wakes soon." He gave a nod and then stepped from the room.
Amalliey watched over Lynn with tired eyes, casting the spell, summoning Ryuk, it took a lot out of her. Though, for the first time since all of this, it felt right. She didn't feel as though her body was trying to tear apart...
