Iris staggered to her feet, lifting Cassandra into her arms once again. "Come...on..." She grit her teeth. She took a step forward and teleported again. She stumbled and turned her back slammed against the front door of the cabin. She was gasping for air. Her vision threatened to give away. She pushed inside and fell to her knees again, she hugged Cassandra to her chest, protecting her.
All the commotion brought the attention of Nigel. He slowly slipped up the stairs form the basement. "Princess..." He spoke, his eyes wide.
"Don't...just...stand there...Nigel..." Iris grit her teeth, blood leaked down her chin.
Nigel rushed forward, "I know how to do this." He nodded. He lifted Iris and pulled her downstairs, her feet hit every stair on the way down, clanging in her head.
"Cass....get....Cass...n-not me...." She choked on the blood in her mouth.
Nigel set her down, "I'll need the both of you, eh?" He ran from the room.
Everything was a blur from there. Iris woke to the feeling of a puncture in her arm. Nigel used her blood to infused into Cassandra. Soon enough Lucille came into view, she had tears streaming down her cheeks. Iris tried to speak, but she couldn't, her vision fully blacked out then as she succumbed to her weakness...pain racked her body...
The night drew on Nigel worked closely with Lucille to watch over the two. Iris woke almost two days later with a gasp. Her eyes shot open as she sat up. She looked to Cassandra whom was unconscious next to her, she looked to the bags of blood...her own blood. "You heal very quickly now...I had to use a lot of your blood to heal her, otherwise she wouldn't have made it. She's stable now, we will see in time how she fairs..." Nigel spoke his voice soft. "You...you should go speak with the king and queen." He looked to her, his eyes showed a hint of sadness.
"What...no.." She slipped from the bed and looked to Cassandra. Lucille had changed her out of her bloodied clothes into loose pajamas. Iris wore black pajama pants and a dark blue tank top.
"You need to go speak with them, I will watch over Cassandra." Nigel spoke, "Don't worry."
Iris took in a breath, her brows drawn together. "Okay..." She breathed as she stood and stepped from the room. Her body was sore. Flashes of what happened moved through her mind. Killing Arden. Teleporting. Laying in the snow breathless...
"Iris..." Lucille spoke and stepped forward, she sniffled slightly.
"Mother...wh-what is it?" Iris asked as she pulled back from the hug after a moment.
Lucille took in a slow breath, she shook her head. "Come, dear. There is much to explain." She took her hand and led her down the hall to the study.
Iris walked into the room, her father looked up, a glass of whiskey in his hand, his eyes were full of sadness. Julian sat in one of the chairs across from her father, he too had a glass. "What's going on?" Iris asked, her brows drawn together. "Why isn't anyone celebrating....? We...killed Arden...right? That wasn't a dream...we..."
"Iris." Sebastian stood. He set his glass down. He stepped forward to her and wrapped his arms around her, he kissed the top of her head then. "Yes, you and Cassandra took care of Arden...but..."
"But?" Iris tried to pull back, but he held her in the embrace.
"His....alpha...over the district was there..." Sebastian spoke softly.
**
"Push forward!" Sebastian called. The heat of the flames from the ruins made him feel as though he was going to melt. "Kill them all! Don't hold back!" He ordered as the vampires pushed forward, mowing over the lycans in their path. They'd truly surprised them. This was something that his kind would never do, launch an attack against the home of a pack. He lobbed the head of a lycan off and spun around.
"Sebastian!!" Warren screamed. Suddenly Sebastian was knocked to the side, a lycan pinned him down, his sword clattered to the side. Warren tackled the beast off of him. It was a large lycan the jaws drooled as they tossed around on the gronud. Warren stabbed into him with his dagger several times, the punctures didn't even phase the beast. It bit down on his arm, the sound of his bones crushing seemed to echo over the sound of war.
Sebastian stood and rushed forward toward the beast. He stabbed forward and in an instant the beast dodged to the side. Sebastian's sword plunged into Warren's abdomen. His eyes widened as he heard the cry of pain from the man. The lycan snickered as he gripped the king around his throat and lifted him. Sebastian fought against him, gasping for air. Suddenly the beast dropped him, he snarled and lost his lycan form, he stood before Sebastian a human, blood poured from his side. "I'll get the princess yet...Arden was just a pawn in the game..." He grinned, blood in his teeth. He pulled the sword from his side and looked to Warren a grin on his lips. "This boy, means something to you?" He asked before he plunged the sword into Warren's chest. "Just remember king." The lycan stepped forward, gripping his shirt. "I'll come back for you and I'll finish this." He turned and rushed the side of the globe, he burst through the weak point that Cassandra had made, escaping.
"Warren!!" Sebastian rushed forward. "Warren look at me." He looked to his sword that stuck from Warren's chest.
Warren looked up to the king with fading eyes, "Seb...astian..." He choked, blood filled his mouth.
"Don't speak..." Sebastian stared to him with wide eyes. "I'll get you out of this. Just hang on." The sounds of war began to die down as Lycans escaped and fled for their lives. Sebastian stood as Iris appeared before him with Cassandra in her arms. He gripped her shoulders. "Iris!" He stared to Cassandra. Just a drop of her blood could have saved Warren from the cold clutches of death. Though, before Sebastian could even blink Iris was gone, she'd vanished into ashes.
"My king!" Julian rushed over his eyes wide. "They're retreating! Arden is dead!" He grinned at the thought of victory, though the curve in his lips disappeared as his eyes fell on Warren's limp body. "No..." He breathed. He rushed to him, "My king there's still a chance." He ripped the sword from his chest and applied pressure as blood pooled from the wound.
"It's too late." Sebastian spoke, his eyes looked to Warren. "He's gone, that sword pierced his heart, Julian...."
**
Iris hugged herself to her father, tears rolled down her cheeks as he spoke of Warren's death. Filling her in. She gripped her fingers into the cloth of his vest. "It's my fault..." She spoke, her voice shaking.
"No, no I don't think there was anything we could have done..." Sebastian whispered.
"If we hadn't gone after Arden...."
"Then we would all be dead, dear." Lucille spoke, her voice soft. "He sacrificed himself to save your father..."
Iris held herself to Sebastian, the thought of losing her father terrified her, it could have just as easily been him on the other end of that sword.
**
Days blended into a week. Iris tended to Cassandra. She infused blood into her, they gave her so much blood. It had taken a bit of time for the wounds to begin to heal, with so much damage to her body it couldn't heal. Iris was sitting on the bed next to Cassandra when she woke, her journal in her hands, a sketch within the pages of Warren. She hated the thought of him dying. Her mother told her it was a noble death. Though everyone in the family was crushed. Sure Iris hadn't want to marry him, she hadn't loved him. But at the same time...there was this pit in her stomach. Life would press forward without the man that was intended to be her king. For so long she'd been stuck with the idea of him being her king...
Iris looked to Cassandra and a soft smile split her lips. "Thank god." She spoke softly. "Easy." Iris placed her hand on Cassandra's back helping her. "You've been out for about a week...Arden nearly crushed you, nearly every bone in your torso was shattered...you lost a lot of blood..." She bit her lip slightly, "But we got him." She nodded. "He's gone." Her voice was soft as she spoke. "Yes, yes food." She nodded and helped Cassandra to the kitchen.
Sebastian looked to Cassandra when she began to ask questions. He set the pot of tea down and let out a slow breath. "Warren..." His voice was soft, it wasn't like him to be quiet. "Arden was ended thanks to you and Iris. We suffered casualties, as in any war, we got the better hand against the lycans. Though, Arden's master was there..." He looked to Cassandra, his brows drawn together. "Warren saved me." He spoke and gave a nod.
Lucille sat down, her eyes sad. "He sacrificed himself to save Sebastian." She nearly whispered.
Julian bit his lip slightly, though he didn't speak. Sebastian took in a breah. "Nigel told us who Arden's master is, he's a part of the core group, a part of what they consider their council." He poked at his food a moment and shook his head. "We lost a lot of good people for that fight, and many were wounded..." His voice trailed off then. "We no longer have a king to take my place at Iris' side..." He took a sip from his tea then. "All to kill one lycan that will only be replaced by another." He scoffed slightly.
"Dear." Lucille looked to him. "We would all be dead if we hadn't done this, you know this. He aimed at getting Iris back, you saw the plans he'd fabricated...we would have all died and she would be locked away as his test subject once again."
Sebastian grit his teeth slightly he nodded though he didn't speak. The rest of the meal was nearly silent. Iris stood at the end. "Cass." She spoke, her voice soft. She helped her stand. "Come on." She gave a slight nod. She walked to the stairs and led her down to the living area where a fire burned in the fireplace. Iris stared to the flames a long moment. "How are you feeling?" She asked, her voice soft, her eyes looked to Cassandra looking her over. "Does anything still hurt? Do you need blood?" Iris asked as she looked over Cassandra.

Cassandra sat defeated – her eyes softened and she let out a sigh. “I’m sorry… I know he.. meant a lot…” she stood then and poured herself a cup of tea. She stood as she listened, leaning against the island, sipping quietly. Her mind rambled with thoughts, and a grave sense of guilt washed over her…
Cassandra followed Iris down into living room. She stepped over and placed another log into the fire – and stoked it. She knelt down then and held her hands forward, warming them, as she watched the fire dance about. “I’m okay… thank you for saving me…I don’t need any blood..no..” she replied quietly.
“I’m sorry about Warren… I know he… well…it puts the coven in a difficult situation… and I feel to blame for it. I have been pushing for this movement, to fight instead of run.. and now this family’s vision of the future has been completely ruined…” she stood then and crossed her arms, her eyes looking to her. “Well…I’m sticking around… I owe it now more than ever.” She walked over and placed a hand on her shoulder.
It was then that Julian stepped into the room, he sat down on the couch. His eyes glanced over to the two and then he sighed softly. “I fear the worst, that this is only the beginning to our problems… I over heard Sebastian talking to Lucille – Warren’s coven lent us men, only a fraction survived, Warren dying with them… he is going to be… angry. He is an influential party member of the council, and I know he will ensure we suffer some kind of consequence due to it all… as if losing him wasn’t enough…” he crossed his arms.
“Casualities are sometimes part of war…” Cassandra spoke, her eyes watching him.
“Yes, of course, but we aren’t at war. The council agreed to remain quiet and stay out the way…” Julian replied.
“Just like the council likely agrees that there should be no mutual trade with them either… yet that happened too. You know it was unavoidable…” she crossed her arms.
“Yes, but the council will not think of it that way… We did what we had to do, we were backed up into a corner with little time to respond. The council… they may disagree, saying that we should have consulted them first, to which we would have just escaped to their head quarters and hid… until the coast was clear?” Julian stood then and approached the fire.
“That’s no way to live…” Cassandra spoke, glancing to him.
“I agree…” Julian turned to her. “But, this is what we will have to face…” he sighed. “If only things could be more black and white…” he paced and then sighed. “Well… we have to keep moving forward… Arden’s Alpha will be a threat… the Order, and possibly the council?” he sighed. “Seems we have a rough patch coming but… it’s not the first time. When you live as long as we do.. things happen, people come and go, fights and wars, silence and peace… it’s the cycle of life…” he nodded and then stepped away, escaping to his room.
Cassandra turned to her and lead her into the bedroom. “Are you okay? I know… you didn’t really want to marry him but… he was your friend, and that was your fathers dream… and I… I don’t think I can replace him, huh?” she sat down on the bed. “I wonder now… what he thinks of me, what is my place here now? What is next?” she laid down and then sighed - her eyes looking up to the ceiling…
“I’m glad you are okay though…we did it, we did kill Arden so… that’s a step, hm?” she rolled over and looked to her – eyes softening as they gazed over her.
“I wish we could just escape it all – live in some log cabin up in the mountains, not another home in sight for miles – nothing but the trees…” she laughed. “I’ve always fought – and as long as I live amongst others.. the threat of Lycans appears. But what if… we could just isolate ourselves and live in quiet serenity?” she chuckled then. “I could for once sleep without dreaming of them…” she held her arm open then.
“Come here…” she beckoned Iris to come over and curl into her arms, for a little snuggle session. She could speak all she wanted but something about just… holding each other… seemed the thing she wanted most. Maybe then in those moments she could find that quiet serenity…

Iris watched Cassandra she slowly shook her head. "No, don't blame yourself." She spoke, "If you were not here far more of the coven would be dead, in fact I would still be Arden's prisoner. I can guarantee that." She looked up as Julian walked into the room. Iris looked to him a moment before she turned her gaze to the flames of the fireplace. She listened to the conversation between the two, though she didn't speak. Julian was right. The danger that her coven now faced felt greater than when Arden was hunting them...
Iris followed Cassandra and looked to her with soft eyes. "I will be okay." Iris spoke, "Warren, though I didn't love him he was to be my king...and that idea has been in my head for so many years that it hurts to think that it will not be true. He would have made a great king, his actions that led to his death show that." She sighed softly, her eyes looked to Cassandra. "If only you could replace him." She forced a bit of a smile. Iris stepped over to the dresser and pushed around a few of her hair pins as she listened to Cassandra talk. "Hm...my father will not blame you, though that is the easy route. He and my mother know that this would have happened with or without you. It has been building up to this point for years now. Arden had just become more agressive lately." She sighed softly. "So, killing Arden, is a step in the right direction, and we did it." She offered a smile to Cassandra then as she moved and sat on the edge of the bed near her.
A smile curved up her lips as Cassandra talked about the secluded cabin. She let out a chuckle. "That, sounds so lovely it could only be a dream." She glanced to Cassandra then as she'd opened her arms. Iris snuggled into her chest then and hugged herself against Cassandra's body. She took in a deep breath, her face buried into the nape of Cassandra's neck. A sense of calm washed over her then as she fell quiet. "Thank you." She whispered softly. Iris took in a shaken breath. "I was worried you weren't going to make it." Her voice was barely audible. Tears stung her eyes as she took in a shaken breath. "I don't want to lose you..." She muttered. A few tears escaped her eyes and splashed onto Cassandra's skin. She fell quiet then as she began to cry. She hadn't let out her emotions since the day she found out Warren died. She'd kept her composure very well. She was focused on saving Cassandra.
Iris soon enough slipped to sleep, her arms hugged to Cassandra her breathing evened out. It was the most relaxed she'd been in a long time. Though the moment didn't last long enough...a knock came from the door causing Iris to jolt awake. She lifted her head, her eyes stared to Cassandra a moment, the wetness of tears still clung to her cheek that had been pressed against Cassandra. She brushed it away and walked to the door before she opened it.
Sebastian stood there his eyes looked her over a moment, "You need to gather your things, we need to take Warren back to his family so that we can perform a proper burial for him." His voice was soft. "His father will be rather upset...just keep your composure..." He then turned and left the room.
Iris took in a breath. Each mentioning of Warren's death felt like a stab to her. She remembered her father's eyes as he grabbed her shoulders. Relief. If she hadn't left. Though, Cassandra was in no condition to save Warren...and from what Julian told her there was no way to save him, even Cassandra's blood wouldn't have been able to pull him back from that...
"Okay, ready?" Iris asked, she gave a soft smile. "We did everything we could...there are casualties in war, just as you said...just..." She thought a moment. "We don't usually go to war..." She nodded. She took Cassandra's hands and looked into her eyes a long moment. "I'm...I'm just glad you're okay, Cass." She leaned forward and kissed her cheek then. She searched her eyes a moment before she pulled away. Iris slipped behind a screen and changed her clothes. She pulled on a black tunic and black tight pants. She pulled her boots on before she fastened a dark blue corset over her waist. She wore the amulet around her neck that Cassandra had given her. She clipped a black rose into her hair and she looked to Cassandra before she attached her knife and pistol to her legs. "Okay..." She nodded, "Better to get this over with...huh?" There was a sense of dread about her. She wished this was all a dream...but unfortunately it wasn't.
**
The day passed quickly as they drove across the snowy landscape to the west. They passed through towns and eventually they came upon a beautiful large home in the valley. It was Warren's home, she'd been here once years ago when she'd first met his mother and father, when Sebastian struck a deal with them. The door to the home opened before they had even climbed from their vehicles. "Just, stay quiet, stay calm." Iris spoke and glanced to Cassandra as she slipped from the car.
She found her way to her father's side. Sebastian stepped forward with sad eyes. "Nicolai." He spoke.
"Sebastian, I don't want to hear your apologies." He spoke, his voice cross. His eyes looked to Iris his brows were tucked together. He was a tall well built man, his hair was jet black, his eyes the same hazel as Warren. "I'll be speaking with Iris."
Sebastian took a step forward. "Nicolai..."
"No." He looked to him, his eyes narrowed slightly. "She was to be the queen at Warren's side. So I will speak to her." He looked to Iris. "Come, child."
Iris looked to her father a moment, she bit her lip. Nicolai always made her uncomfortable. He had such a high chair in the council. He was the reason Sebastian would join the council after her marriage. That was part of the agreement. She took in a breath and followed him inside.
**
Sebastian watched after her daughter as she was led inside, he grit his teeth slightly. It was then that Elena, Warren's mother, stepped outside. She stepped forward and hugged herself to Sebastian. "Bring him inside, we've prepared rooms for your family..." She had tears in her eyes. She glanced to Cassandra a moment before she looked to Lucille.
Lucille stepped forward and hugged the woman, "I'm sorry, Elena." She whispered.
Elena pulled back and looked to her, a sniffle escaped her lips. "At least we have Riskel..." She whispered, pain in her voice. "The burial will be tomorrow..." Her voice quaked. "Bring him in...I...."
Lucille pulled her into another embrace. "Elena, shhh." She held her there for a long moment. "I know..." She spoke before she became quiet. She held Elena for a long time.
Sebastian removed Warren's body and carried him in with the help of Julian. A young man stepped outside he had silver eyes and short black hair. He walked over to Cassandra and bowed his head slightly. "Hello." He looked to the vehicle. "Welcome, though, you are not here on the most agreeable terms." He grabbed the bags from the vehicle. "Come, I'll show you in to your room." He began to walk back toward the home.
"Riskel." Elena spoke and looked to the man.
He paused a moment and stepped to her, his eyes searching hers. He pulled her into a hug and wiped away her tears. "We will surpass this mother." He spoke and nodded. She whispered something to him and he nodded again before he returned to Cassandra. "Come on then." He spoke and led her inside the beautiful home.
"I am Riskel...Warren's brother..." His voice grew soft at the mentioning of Warren. He led her down a hallway and pushed the door open to a beautiful room with a 4 post bed. "Make yourself comfortable...our home is your home..." He set the bags down he then stared to her a moment. "Did...did you fight with him?" He asked, "Were you there?" He searched her eyes.

Cassandra stood from the bed as a knock came from the door. She straightened her clothes and stood by, listening as Sebastian spoke to Iris. She lowered her head as she listening – they couldn’t just get over it like they might in the Order, perhaps that’s one of the reasons why things were so easy. No attachments. If anything – death was an expectation, and even in a way – a true honor to die fighting…
*** Soon enough they were bounding towards Warren’s home. She stepped from the car and remained by Julians side, she figured standing by him would be the best… out of the way, and quiet. She wouldn’t speak unless spoken too – she knew that this family had great power and that she now represented her coven…
Watching the family’s depressing – their tears – it made her cringe. She was uncomfortable for sure, she was so used to throwing a life away, keeping it from her mind and heart… the last time she had something as painful was Bran and even then… she let that good easier than she imagined she would. Or perhaps it was just pushed away…
Cassandra followed Riskel, Julian behind her. “Thank you…” she bowed her head and looked into the room. It was then that he questioned about the fight… “Yes… I was there… but Julian saw more than me…” she turned her head and looked to him.
Julian cleared his throat and nodded. “Yes… Cassandra and Iris were at a trap location, where they both finished Arden off. Myself and the rest of the crew fought the bulk of the Lycans… your brother he… he fought with every ounce of his strength, and he fought well. In the end… he sacrificed himself to save Sebastian…if I could have done it myself, I would have. But… he has always been a caring and compassionate person, your brother – died a true hero, and I will never forget him…” Julian teared up slightly and then let out a long breath.
Julian slipped into his bedroom to drop his things off, leaving Cassandra and Riskel standing together.. Cassandra lowered her head and nodded. “Should we… get some tea?” she questioned.
Riskel looked to her and then smiled weakly. “That sounds good.. come this way” he waved to her and lead her down the hallway. “You are a new vampire, are you not?”
“Um.. Yes, very recent.” she looked to him as they passed by the paintings and doors. “You can tell?” she questioned.
Riskel chuckled “Yes, you have a certain fresh scent to you. You haven’t drank much blood… How did your turning go about?” he questioned.
“I can’t remember every detail but… I am a Lycan Hunter, I used to be one with the Order, but… now I am here.” She continued to walk – they entered a breakfast den. Riskel put a pot on a small burner and turned to her.
“Ah… must have been right place and right time, perhaps when you begin to remember – I’d like to know more” he smiled and then pulled out two mugs. He poured the tea, which had loose leaves, it was filtered out but a few got through…
“Thank you” Cassandra accepted the cup. “Yes.. this has all been quite an adventure, I am amazed to see so many vampires, covens.. all living amongst the humans so quietly…” she sipped her tea. “I am… terribly sorry.. I did know him for very long, but I did enjoy his company…” she turned to see Julian step into the room.
“It was a shock but… we are all at risk of the same fate…” he reached for a covered pallet, in it was a collection of biscuits.
“It has all been… a big shock to me. I have always fought Lycans, my entire life – I was an orphan, without a home the entire while. When I became of age – I was recruited…” she crossed her arms and then chuckled. “Being a vampire gives me two choices.. be free, or use this power to my advantage… but I owe my coven, they saved my life..” she took a biscuit and put jelly on her.s
“Save your life… if that is how you view it… in time you may think differently…” Riskel bit into his biscuit. “But… it will be a few hundred years before you become tired. Though, my perspective is skewed since I was born a vampire. What do you make of it?” he questioned.
“Hm… I guess that as a human were are limited, and we worry so much of how much time is left, as a vampire… there are no more blockers – all doors become opened. It’s just getting to the door, I think anything is possible…” she sipped her tea.
Riskel smiled and nodded – “It is true, but often much harder than you may think. But… I am glad you are the one to become a vampire. Power enhances ones personality, meaning… those corrupted only get worse, it seems you are different in that way… Passionate, Kind hearted… maybe even a little naïve” he chuckled “but naivety can be good” he finished his tea. “Come on now… I am sure there is some kind of update…” he lead Cassandra into the living room….

Iris sat across from Nicolai quietly. He set a glass down before her and poured her a glass of whiskey. "So, Iris." He spoke as he sat down. He clasped his hands around his own glass and looked to her a long moment. His gaze made her uncomfortable, though she refused to look away. "With Warren's death that puts your family, your coven at a disadvantage. Does it not?" He took a sip.
Iris slowly nodded, "Yes...though the loss of Warren is the most disheartening." She placed her fingers around her glass. "He sacrificed himself, he is a hero Nicolai."
"Was." Nicolai spoke, a brow raised. He then shook his head. "Your father was to enter the council after your coronation, that was the agreement. But then your father agrees with some..." He thought a moment. "Rogue Lycan Hunter to go after Arden's pack? And Warren goes along with it, dragging several of my own coven to the grave with him!" He slammed his glass slightly, the whiskey splashed onto the desk. "Warren was never such an idiot! These actions are what led to his death! We do not start wars with the lycans!!" He nearly growled. "The council set those rules years ago after the lycan wars! There are reasons for our rules! Now that you have killed an alpha they will be searching for you!"
Iris swallowed slightly, she took in a deep breath. "Nicolai, if I may." She spoke, she stared into his eyes watching as he grit his teeth. She didn't flench in his yelling. She kept her composure calm. "Arden had become more agressive over the last century. Our coven, as well as your coven know that as we have lost several to his pack out of random attacks..." She took in a deep breath. "He kidnapped me, you know?" She asked searching his eyes. "He kidnapped me and used me as an experiment."
Nicolai's eyebrows raised as he stared to her. "How on earth did he get ahold of you?"
"The festival was a perfect cover. King Levi's coven members were there, he was working with Arden. They attacked our own coven and visitors...and lycans rushed the hall...Arden came and before I knew it, I woke in a musty basement tied up..." She didn't look away from him. "He would stop at nothing to get me back and continue his experiments. He would have killed our entire coven. We had to do something. My father was not only following Cassandra, but he was following my own wishes as well as Warren. Warren wanted to see Arden dead after what he did to me just as much as I wanted Arden dead. His death was not in vain and he was a hero. So stop treating it like I murdered Warren." Her eyes teared up slightly. "Stop treating us like criminals and let's get on with it. What do you want from me, Nicolai?"
Nicolai watched her, his expression a bit shocked from her brash response. He then chuckled. "You are quite the spitfire, aren't you?" He questioned and then nodded. "Very well. If you say Warren was acting out of his own will, I will believe you, Iris." He searched her eyes. "But, moving forward we will not attack any lycans directly like that ever again without consulting the council. This was a grave mistake that cost many lives."
"Had we waited more would be dead." Iris shot back, her eyes narrowed.
"Hm." Nicolai watched her, "Very well." He nodded, "I have a proposal then." He tilted his head slightly.
Iris watched him, "I'm listening." She leaned back, her arms crossed.
Nicolai chuckled as he looked to her composure. He wasn't used to someone standing up to him, not with the chair he had in the council. "I like you Iris, you're the first to fight with me in many moons." He grinned then before he shook his head and his serious expression returned. "Moving forward you will take over the throne with my son Riskel at your side, he will be your king. He is younger than Warren, your age actually. So maybe the two of you will get along even better than you did with my dear Warren. You will not attack the lycans without gaining the approval of the council...which...I will allow your father to join, though..." He leaned forward. "If you do anything against these rules I will have him disposed of, like he never existed."
Iris leaned back she nodded, "Go on." She spoke her eyes staring to him.
Nicolai watched her a moment. "You will clean up this mess that you've created with the council. Beg for forgivness of all the lives that you have caused to be taken too early from this world. I will be your sole contact to the council." He took a drink of his glass. "The coronation will be next week. I will host it, we will make sure you're safe. You will obey my son, as he will rule how I would rule and much of how Warren would have ruled...before he decided to side with the rogue hunter that you've brought to us."
Iris grit her teeth, "She's not a rogue." She snapped. "She has helped us more than you'll ever know, Nicolai." She stood, her eyes angry.
Nicolai chuckled, he remained seated. "Iris, do not challenge me, you will lose."
Iris stared to him a long moment. If he only knew what she was, he wouldn't have been such an ass to deal with. "If I don't follow each order?" She asked.
"Then your father is dead." Nicolai responded. "It's fairly simple. You do as I say, he gets to live."
"And if I refuse?" She asked her eyes searching his.
Nicolai was on the other side of the desk standing before her, he gripped her throat. "I would be a wise princess if I were you and take the bone I've thrown you." He growled. "Otherwise I'll end your entire coven by making you an enemy of the council." He'd pushed her against the wall by the end of his sentence. "Do I make myself clear?"
"Crystal." Iris responded, her jaw clenched. He released her and she rubbed her neck.
"Good. Come, let us introduce you to Riskel and we shall make the announcement." He smiled then.
Iris followed him, his brows tucked together. She hoped this was the right decision, though, even then, she couldn't back out because that would mean more lives would be lost...to include Cassandra...she'd have to go through with it, no matter the cost. As they came to the top of the stairs she saw Cassandra with Riskel and Julian standing in the living room below. Her mother and father were there speaking to Elena. A few other vampires from Nicolai's coven had gathered as well.
Sebastian looked up, his eyes locked on Iris before he looked to Nicolai. "Nicolai..." He spoke his eyes searching over the man.
"Yes, we came to terms, not to worry." He spoke and then looked to the others. He paused, "Riskel." He spoke.
Riskel looked over. He looked back to Julian and Cassandra. "We will finish this conversation later." He nodded before he stepped away. "Yes, father?" He asked.
Nicolai smiled and held his shoulders. "Meet your queen, the coronation will be next week." He tilted his head slightly. "I know these are grim times, but there is a bright future for you boy." He spoke softly.
Riskel looked to Iris a moment then to his father. "I..."
"You will." He spoke and nodded he pushed him to Iris.
Riskel looked to her a moment, he bit his lip. "Um..." He glanced to the others that were watching them. "Iris." He spoke and looked to her. He gave a very weak smile then.
Iris looked back to him. She gave a soft smile as well. "Hello, Riskel." She searched his eyes.
Nicolai looked to the small gathering of vampires before him. "It is with great sadness that Warren has passed, a victor in battle. He sacrificed himself for the king that stands before you. A noble death, a true hero." He paused and looked to everyone. "Though, with each loss there is a new light, a new beginning." He took in a deep breath. "My son Riskel will succeed him and he will take his place at Iris' side next week during the coronation. Riskel will make a fine king." He spoke, a cheer came from the vampires. "Tomorrow we will celebrate Warren's life. For now, everyone should rest." He then stepped away. Elena followed him out, tears still rolling down her cheeks. She was taking Warren's death worse than anyone else.
Iris glanced to Cassandra, her eyes sad. She felt trapped. She looked back to Riskel and bit her lip. "Are we supposed to do something?" She asked in a whisper.
Riskel nodded as he knelt down and took her hand into his. He looked up to her a smile on his lips. Iris could tell it was forced. "Iris will you be the queen at my side as I am to be your king?" He asked.
Iris took in a slow breath, she could feel Nicolai's gaze on her from the balcony that overlooked the living room. "Yes." She spoke her voice soft.
Riskel slipped a beautiful band upon her finger and he stood. "Now..." He whispered and looked down slightly. "We are supposed to kiss...I..."
Iris leaned forward and kissed him quickly on the lips. She stepped back her hands still in his as the coven cheered. "I don't want this anymore than you do." Iris spoke her eyes searching his. "But I will do what it takes to protect my coven that will soon become your coven, I only hope you are prepared to do the same." Her voice was soft, only he would be able to hear her.
Riskel nodded he took in a breath. "O-of course..." He nodded as she pulled her hands from is.
"I'm exhausted." She spoke then. "May I rest?" She asked.
"Yes you are more than welcome to. I can show you to a---..."
Iris walked off from him. "Cass..." She spoke softly, her eyes held pain. Julian watched her, his eyes shocked, he couldn't believe what he just saw. She could feel her mother and father watching her...though she didn't dare look to them. She couldn't tell Sebastian of the threats made against his life for her to make this decision, for her to follow through with these actions. She bit her lip slightly. "Come." She spoke. She knew her way about the home as she found her way to the bedroom that their stuff sat in. As she shut the door she leaned heavily against it. She took in quick breaths, losing her composure completely. Tears welled in her eyes, she looked up blinking quickly, trying to fight it. "He said...if I don't do this...he'll kill my father...." She choked out. "If I don't do everything he says...he'll kill my father..." She whimpered, tears began to stream down her cheeks. "He'll kill the entire coven..." She breathed, her voice trembled.

Cassandra looked to Riskel – who knelt down before Iris. Cassandra’s hand, by her side, squeezed into a fist. After a second – she forced her fingers to let go, to relax. Her eyes glanced to Julian – who looked back to her. After the crowd began to cheer – Cassandra slipped away, standing in the hallway as she waited for Iris to emerge.
She followed Iris swiftly and shut the door behind them. “Unfucking believable.” Cassandra crossed her arms. “he fucking hurt you, I felt it” she grit her teeth. “I saw the whole thing.. threatened your father, the coven. More than just politics… it enrages me” she paced in the room. “Nicolai’s only intention Is getting control of both covens – you might as well just hand it over to him. That coven – might as well be nothing… Riskel – he’s fine, but his father will manipulate him like a puppet… Your father will join the council and force his vote – all the freedom you have is about to be stolen… so that this fucker can get the advantage over his peers…” she finally sat down on the side of the bed.
“You need to tell your father. Obviously this is all a very sticky situation – but you cannot live the next few hundred years being micromanaged by this fool. And if he would go as far as this madness – then I can only imagine what else he is planning… Your father’s greed for a position of power has allied us to this cruel dictator, I think his intention of overtaking this Coven was always there. While Warren is sweet, how easy would it be for Nicolai to threaten him too?” she scoffed. “I need air…” she stepped over to Iris and grasped her hand. She focused intensely – and they vanished.
Cassandra gasped as she took in a deep breath – they had traveled far. They appeared at the Log Cabin, at the frozen lake. Cassandra stepped forward and gripped her hand tightly – suddenly all the ice in the lake burst into a million pieces, landing into the water and sinking down. She threw her hand and grit her teeth. She then walked forward, feeling a little better after the bit of power rush… she tossed a few logs onto the pit and lit it aflame…
“You can’t be okay with this… we need to come up with a plan. As much as you can beg the council – Arden’s alpha won’t back down, the Order is on our toes. Nicolai only cares about keeping you, his son, and Sebastian alive – that is the only benefit he is getting by this alliance…” she crossed her arms… “What are your thoughts?”

Iris sniffled as Cassandra spoke her eyes sad. She trembled like a leave on a breezy day. When Cassandra took her hand she squeezed her eyes shut as they teleported. Her head spun she sat down on the log as she watched Cassandra use her power out of rage. She stared to the beautiful band upon her finger, tears streaming down her cheeks. "It's no different than the deal my father must have struck with him." She whispered softly. "That cabin...in the woods...it sounds nice right about now." Iris looked to Cassandra. "This...entire situation..." She shook her head. "I have half of a mind to denounce my coven from the council, to separate us, to remove the council from above us...though..." She bit her lip. "Only a few covens have survived without the protection of the council." She stood and paced, her fists balled. She was incredibly angry.
"To threaten the coven like that?" She scoffed, "He's mad. Nicolai has always been greedy for power. My father is trying to get into the council to change the ways of the council...to make things better...to end the ancient ways that cause more hassel than need be...but..." She took in a deep breath. "I fear that him joining the council will be worthless, his vote won't matter to the other members, his vote will be radical...he wants everything to change, even the pure blood royalty...he wants it all abolished. We shouldn't have to play such games...." She sat down again and grit her teeth. "To tell me we can't kill lycans?" She questioned. "So if I'm fucking attacked I can't kill one? That's what he was saying, no attacking them unless he grants permission, which he won't ever do that. The council practically made a law against it. We aren't supposed to fight them, it only causes more trouble...but...when they are attacking us..." She huffed. "We can't just sit back...you're right, the order will be after us as well." She crossed her arms. "If Dylan hasn't already come up with a plan to try to enslave you. I won't allow it." Her royal tone came through. "I won't allow any of it."
**
"Iris?" A knock at the door. "Iris are you there?" Riskel pushed the door open and glanced about the room. He bit his lip slightly. "I...I'm sorry..." He moved about, looking for her. "I don't want to do this...I know what he's doing...we can stop him..." He spun around.
"Tell me everything." Sebastian stood in the doorway, Lucille at his side. "What is your father planning?" He asked.
Riskel lowered his eyes, "His plan is always that of greed. It has been since I was a child. He wants nothing more than power, Sebastian." He sighed softly. "I didn't want to do what I did..."
"I know." He spoke, "Tell me what he threatened my daughter with. She doesn't sway that easily...."
Riskel bit his lip. "Your life...the coven...everything..."
"What?!" Sebastian snapped, he snarled, his eyes turning golden. "That fucking rat." He growled.
Lucille gripped his arm. "Wait, Sebastian." She spoke softly. She looked to Riskel. "What do we do?" She asked her eyes searching his. "Where is my daughter?"
"I....I don't know....I..." Riskel looked about the room, a bit of black ash remained on the floor from where Cassandra and Iris had vanished from.

Cassandra looked to Iris as she listened to her rant – she nodded along, her anger growing on fuel. Cassandra reached over then and grasped Iris’s hand, she pulled her into the log cabin – at first she paused, listening.. to see if anyone was there. It was quiet. “Come on” Cassandra pulled her along. As they entered the living room – Cassandra’s hand gently pushed Iris backwards, onto the couch. She crawled onto her and their lips clashed in a heavy battle.
Cassandra held her hand out, mid kiss, and snapped her fingers – the fireplace lit aflame, where wood was already sitting. Iris’s shirt flew to the ground as Cassandra undressed her… Their moment of passion was directly fueled by their rage, she allowed herself to refocus that energy into Iris – into a steamy session of ecstasy. They traveled about the cabin, a moment together in the kitchen – downstairs and in the bathroom…
Easily 3 hours had passed before Cassandra finally gave in – she fell over on their bed – her chest heaving. She laid there for a long moment, before rolling over and placing her head on Iris’s bare chest. She kissed her soft skin – until she pressed her nose into her neck….
“We will figure this out…” she whispered and sighed deeply. “Your father wont stand for this, and I have a feeling that the coven will do what it must – simply to survive… there is no sense of eternal living if you are slave to another, no…” she shook her head. “If he cared about following the rules and keeping the peace – he wouldn’t have listened to me, and maybe even I’d be dead. But no… he is caring, compassionate, and he believes in justice and truth. He is a good king, and at the end of the day – he is only King over his Coven, and that is his to protect…” she sat up and then glanced outside – it was easily past midnight, morning would be coming soon…
“We should get back… they surely have tried looking for us, and well.. I don’t care” she chuckled and then stepped from the bed. She teleported swiftly – and returned with clothes in hand. She dressed herself and pulled her boots on. “Come on then…” he held her hand out. As Iris came to her – she wrapped her arms about her and then smiled, searching her eyes briefly… “At least we have this…” she grinned and then kissed her sweetly. “We’ll have to keep it a secret… but seems like the Cabin is a good get away, huh?” she winked. “I feel.. better, for now..” she nodded. “Deep breath… I’ll take us back”
They disappeared in ash – and they reappeared back in their guest room… She stepped over to the bed, to see that Julian was sitting in the chair. “You both okay?” he questioned and stood.
“I – uh – we… just need some air…” she turned her gaze away, as she was blushing madly.
Julian chuckled “I figured as much… We were worried at first, but at this point… don’t blame you… all of this has happened so fast… Listen, your father was looking for you… You both should go speak to him…” Julian then stepped over and tilted his head. “You got uh… something there” he pointed to Cassandra’s neck – a deep hickey.
“Jeez…” Cassandra covered it with her hand and moved. “Sloppy” Cassandra grinned to Iris and then pressed her finger to it – and it healed easily. “I know what your mom said..” Cassandra spoke as she came to Iris, once Julian left the room. “but maybe next time we drink?” she was meaning that Iris drink from her, and Cassandra from Iris… “something to think about… I don’t have that hunger but damn, I was thinking about it – just hesitant…” she chuckled and then nodded. “We should clean up and then see the King..” she kissed her once more and slipped away to fix her hair…

Iris was fuming by time she finished speaking, her breathing had increased, her brows were tucked together. When Cassandra took her hand she was surprised, her brows raised. She allowed herself to be pulled along. “Cass, I don’t know what to do…” She spoke, “This whole thing is spiraling out of control and I’m just supposed to step in and stop it?” She questioned. Iris was taken aback when Cassandra pushed her back onto the couch, she started to protest but then Cassandra’s lips were pressed to hers. She kissed back, passion behind her movements as she gripped at Cassandra. Her pulse began to race as they moved about. Articles of clothing were tossed aside. Iris giggled at one point, pushing Cassandra onto her back. She playfully bit at her neck before she moved over Cassandra’s body with her lips.
The whole while passion mixed with the rage of the situation fueled this session. Iris hugged Cassandra to her chest, her own rising and falling quickly. She smiled, high from the experience. “I don’t really care if they’re looking.” She spoke, “I’ve you.” She then kissed Cassandra’s cheek. “I hate to keep this a secret.” She shook her head as she dressed herself. “It’s like walking passed a candy store, though, I can only look through the window, and sometimes, I get to try a piece.” She chuckled, her smile playful. She embraced Cassandra as they teleported back. Her eyes fell on Julian, her cheeks flushed red when he saw the mark on Cassandra’s neck. Though when she locked eyes with Cassandra she bit her lip slightly. “I didn’t mean to.” She grinned then and looked to Julian. “Don’t--…”
“Iris, don’t worry.” He placed his hands on her shoulders. “I’ve kept many secrets for you over the years.” He chuckled. “Go and talk to your father, he’s trying to figure out what to do with Nicolai…”
Iris nodded, “Thank you Julian.” She spoke, she stepped to the mirror next to Cassandra and adjusted her rose in her hair and then she smiled. “At least we have eachother, hm?” She smirked. “If all goes wrong, at least I’ve met you.” She then turned. “Let’s go speak with my father then…” She slipped from the room and walked down the hallway. She knocked lightly on a door.
“Come in.” Sebastian spoke.
Iris pushed the door open to another guest room that he and Lucille were in. Lucille sat at the window, she had a book in her hands she was reading over the laws of the council. “Father….” Iris let out a breath.
“You need to be careful running off like that.” He glanced to Cassandra, “I may understand it but Nicolai may not. Riskel covered for you well, he said that you had a headache and that you were sleeping.” He took in a breath and shook his head. “This is quite the situation, isn’t it?” He asked.
Iris nodded and crossed her arms. “What will we do father? If I leave he will kill off our coven one by one if he has to…and I believe him with the size of his coven and his well trained men and women…we would be hunted down.”
“There is a way.” Lucille spoke up. She came over, book in hand. “You see, he is basically blackmailing you, threatening you. Once you’re queen we can establish a connection with Marcus…”
“Marcus?” Iris asked, her eyes widened. “We….we can’t wake him for…”
“Oh yes we can. It is in the rules very clearly. Everything that has been happening in the council lately is against everything written within these pages. Marcus would have a fit if he knew this was happening. We can put an end to this, your father can step in a head of the council and the rotten members of the council will be abolished.”
Iris bit her lip slightly, “I…” She glanced to Cassandra and then to her parents.
“Iris, you’ll have to marry Riskel, he’s a good lad.” Sebastian spoke. “He isn’t his father, I see a lot of Warren in him. He was rather close with Warren and I feel it would be a good match, he has agreed to help us wake Marcus. It will be a trip, but we can handle it after the wedding.”
Iris felt a lump in her throat. “You can’t be serious…” She muttered.
“He is a wonderful young man, dear.” Lucille smiled. “And those eyes, have you seen them?” She winked and chuckled before she shook her head. “Look, you have to rule and the council states your mate must be a pureblood. I’m sorry dear. I know this isn’t ideal at all. But we must play the game, Nicolai can not suspect that we are going to shatter the council. Nearly every chair will be gotten rid of, a whole new council will replace them. Those that are not corrupt.” Lucille took in a deep breath, her eyes looked to Cassandra, she gave a soft smile. “There is a place in your heart for Cass, I know this.” She looked to Iris. “If I could have it my way then you would be allowed to do as you please…but for now, you are nothing more than her sire…”
Iris took in a deep breath she fiddled with the ring on her finger. Her mother was right. They would have to play their part and get all the cards set before they played their hand. “I understand…we will keep quiet.” She bit her lip slightly.
“Don’t go up and disappear again, without telling us. So I can cover for you properly.” Sebastian nodded, “I understand that this is stressful, and I apologize, but soon enough we will right the council as I planned to do from the beginning. We will set things in motion once you are queen.”
“Of course.” Iris nodded, her eyes looked away slightly. “I’m going to get some rest…” She spoke softly. She left the room then before she made her way down the hallway, she plopped onto the bed, her eyes welled with tears again. “I’ve no control over anything…” She breathed. “All my life have ever been is a big game…I feel free when I’m with you, Cass…” She looked to her. “For once…” She let out a soft laugh. “It took me over 500 years to feel free…and once I finally do…” She shook her head and sighed.

Cassandra followed Iris into the bedroom, she stood by the door as she listened. She could feel Iris’s discomfort… and even the King and Queen’s. Marcus… must be their supreme leader, she tilted her head and bit her lip slightly. This was all fine and well, but where was Marcus, how does one wake him up? Surely the Council is guarding him well, and also keeping people away from him too… they must know their corruption would end their reign…
Cassandra nodded a Lucille looked to her, as Iris left the room she paused. “I will do my best to help her… It seems we’ve all got a common goal, now to just play the part…” she looked to the door…
Sebastian sighed softly… “Thank you, it is hard to keep her in line when her emotions are raving. You at least can help us handle it… again… just let us know if you both need to get away. You have a rare gift, one that I couldn’t blame you for using it… we are more so lucky that you’ve stayed with us… you could go at any point… so… thank you” Sebastian nodded.
Cassandra turned then and made her way out the room, following Iris into the bedroom. “There’s hope at least…” she replied and she stepped up to her – she cupped her cheek and wiped her tear away with her thumb. “It sounds like there’s a plan in action, one that will get you closer to freedom than you know… Riskel doesn’t want to marry you, Warren did…. That gives you an advantage. We all play our part and we actually have a shot to debunk the council, which is something your father had only dreamt of…” she smiled weakly. “Just think that in a few months, however long, we can finally escape this madness, and you are right – until then, we are together, even if in secret” she winked..
“Let’s just ride it out….”
***
Large bells range in the air – people gathered in the ancient church. It towered high and had several towers and balconies… It was truly a beautiful mausoleum… The pews were full of vampires, all dressed to their best to watch the wedding commence…
Cassandra sat in the first row, directly next to Lucille. Sebastian was in the back – preparing to walk his daughter down the isle, to hand her off to Riskel… Cassandra wore a light blue dress, with a white lacey corset, her hair had been freshly colored, so it was a clean ashen white color once more, hiding her red roots that had began to snuck in previously.
Riskel stood at his place – his hair was combed and gelled, he wore a elegant tuxedo which fit him perfectly… The whole nonsense was just one huge charade, which no one had much of a choice…
Chatter filled the air – until suddenly the organ began to play… everyone turned their heads to the doorway, waiting for the princess to emerge, the King by her side, to walk the isle and take their place by Riskel…
When Iris emerged – Cassandra felt something get caught her in her throat. She shifted in her seat and looked away. She was stunning, beyond stunning – the most beautiful woman she had ever laid eyes on. She had to remind herself that this wasn’t permanent, that it was all a show, a game… It was then that she felt Lucille’s hand squeeze her own. Cassandra glanced to the Queen, who looked to her with soft eyes. “She is beautiful hm?” she questioned to Cassandra.
“Beyond it…” Cassandra whispered and gazed back at the Princess, their eyes locked for a moment – Iris was at the first row…
Lucille glanced to Cassandra and smiled “I’ll be happier the next time, when it is with who she choses… but for now, we must make due…” Lucille smiled weakly and then looked forward, her eyes watching her husband…

“I only hope that things go as smoothly as my mother wishes. Though, when it comes to my mother when she formulates a plan, the execution is very well done. I haven’t seen one of her plans fall apart before, no matter how large or small the plan may be.” She wrapped her arms around Cassandra and hugged herself to her. “Even if in secret, every moment with you is worth more than any moment that we spend apart.” She whispered into the nape of her neck.
**
As the week progressed Iris spent time with Riskel as ordered by Nicolai. They would spend time in the study, in the garden. It was as though they were attached at the hip. Riskel spoke to her about the council and the members, teaching her what he could. They developed a friendship and she realized just as her father had that Riskel was more like Warren than she’d thought. By the end of the week Riskel had developed feelings for Iris and her stubborn ways. She still pushed against him, but she played her part, she smiled when she was supposed to and joked at the dinner table just as Nicholai would want. They even went on a few hunts together…
**
Iris stood in the back staring down the aisle as the music began. She was in a gorgeous white dress. The veil over her face added to the mystery. Her hair was done up very nicely, she’d spent hours getting make-up and having her hair done. She smiled beneath the veil hiding her true feelings. As she walked passed Cassandra her eyes moved to her and in that moment, she wished that Cassandra was the one she was being given to…
Before she knew it she stood before Riskel, her father still held her as they looked to the preacher.
“Welcome everyone. This is a very special time.” The Preacher spoke. “We are gathered before friends and family, as our covens become one beneath this roof. We will join this man and woman in Holy Matrimony. Into this holy estate these two come to be joined. Who gives this bride to the groom in marriage?” The pastor asked.
“I do.” Sebastian spoke. He then looked to Iris a moment a soft smile on his lips. He took her hand and placed it into Riskel’s hand. He then retreated to sit next to Lucille.
The pastor smiled as he looked to the two. “Today this man will be separated from his mother and father and through this ceremony will become one with his soon to be wife. Soon the covens will be joined beneath a new king and queen. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. Riskel and Iris come today desiring to be united in this sacred relationship.” The preacher looked to the two with a warm smile. “Please, join hands.”
Iris turned her hands slipped into Riskel’s she looked up to him, he was just right in height for her, as if he’d been cut from a cloth to fit Iris. He looked to her with a warm smile as he gripped her hands gently. Iris’ heart bound within her chest. Her eyes glanced to Cassandra, though she did not move her head. She watched her a moment, before she looked back to him as the preacher continued.
“Now we shall ask for the great blessing from our ancients.” He bowed his head. The preacher began to speak a prayer then. “Bless now these two that stand before you, father. Give them your wisdom and your strength. Amen.” He spoke before he looked up. “I ask you each now to repeat your vows.” He spoke his eyes searching theirs.
“I, Riskel Gosling, take you, Iris Remmington, to be my wedded wife, to love and cherish, for better or worse, through sickness and in health, for richer or poorer. From this day forward.”
Iris stared into Riskel’s eyes, her breath shook slightly. Her grip on his hands tightened. This pause caused the preached to look to her a bit nervously. “I, Iris Remmington…” She began, “Take you, Riskel Gosling, to be my wedded husband….” Another pause. “To love and cherish, for better or worse, through sickness and in health, for richer or poorer….” Iris took in a deep breath, “From this day forward.”
The Preacher watched Iris a long moment before he retrieved the rings from a small box. “May our father bless these rings which you give to each other as your sign of love and devotion.”
Riskel took the beautiful diamond ring into his hand and Iris took the lovely band that was laid with diamonds into her own hand. “This ring is my sacred gift to you, a symbol of my love, a sign that from this day forward and always my love will surround you. With this ring I wed thee.” Riskel spoke as he slipped the ring over her finger.
Iris took in a deep breath as she stared up into his eyes from behind the veil. She slipped the ring onto his finger.
The preacher smiled, “And now may it be that Riskel Gosling and Iris Remmington are one. To seal the vows you may drink the blood of each other to solidify the bond.” He spoke.
Riskel raised his hand, the diamonds that lay within his ring glistened as he lifted the veil from Iris’ face. The crow watched anxiously. He leaned down, “You’re doing just fine.” He whispered in her ear. He carefully lifted her arms around his neck and his hands held onto her waist. Iris tensed as she felt his fangs sink into her flesh. She let out an exasperated breath, her eyes closed, her hands gripped onto the back of his tuxedo. It was painful. He drank from her for a few moments before he slid his fangs from her neck. He pressed his fingers to her skin and he licked the blood away from his lips. Iris looked to him she took in quick breaths as the wound on her neck healed. Not even a drop of blood had dripped down to her dress. Iris leaned forward then. Her hand on his chest. She took in a deep breath before she sank her own fangs into his neck and she drank a few swallows of his blood. She stepped back after a moment, holding her own fingers over his wound as it healed.
“You will drink this blessed goblet now to show that you will become the new king and queen, united over the two covens that will now be signified as one.” The Preacher held a large goblet of blood forward. It was blood from each member of the council. The council members sat on the upper deck of the church.
Riskel took the goblet into his hands. He turned to Iris and he took a swift drink of the blood before he handed the goblet to her. Iris took in a deep breath before she finished off the goblet, Riskel turned to her again, his hands gripping hers.
The preacher stepped forward and placed a beautiful crown on Riskels skull, he then placed a delicate crown upon Iris’ head. “You may now kiss your bride to seal this marriage.”
Riskel stared into her eyes, he took in a deep breath before he leaned forward his lips pressed to hers. His hand moved to her cheek. The crowd began to cheer with excitement.
“Allow me to present you, Mr. and Mrs. Gosling, our king and queen.” The preacher spoke to that more cheers erupted.
Iris held Riskel’s hand as he led her down the aisle toward the exit of the church. Iris plastered on a smile, a fake smile, but she was good at faking smiles by now.
**
Soon later the vampires met in a royal ball like setting. Food was sprawled out on a table. Drinks were available at the bar. Iris stood at a table her eyes looking over the crowd as they danced to the music. She sipped from her glass of wine. She’d been dancing for a few hours at that point, from guest to guest, each congratulating her on her marriage. She adjusted the beautiful crown upon her head and sighed softly. She glanced around looking for Cassandra.

Cassandra winced as she watched him bite into her neck – something fired up within her. She could barely watch… Lucille gripped her hand, she seemingly had never let go of Cassandra… at this point Lucille had very much became her mother, and in this moment – she was thankful. It took everything she had to not upright vanish, to vanish and never return. As they spoke their wills.. their lips touched – a powerful wave of jealousy crashed down upon her. This was something she had never felt before, and right now she didn’t know what to do with it.
As soon it was time to leave the room – Cassandra stood and snuck away swiftly. She moved to the bar and looked to the bartender, who was pouring himself a shot. He glanced up and then smiled “Would you drink with me? A quick one, before thing’s get too busy?” he poured a second shot and slid it over to her.
Cassandra lifted the shot glass and sniffed it – blueberry vodka… Cassandra grinned and held it up, he did the same, and they both drank it down together. Cassandra set the glass down and nodded – “Thanks.. I needed that” she sat down. “Mix me up something strong, surprise me” she pulled out a few bucks and set it down.
“I could tell, the doors open and you’re the first one before me…” he chuckled “What’s the deal then? This is a wedding – people should be happy, right?” he questioned and slid a concoction to her.
“Not when they’re getting married to the wrong person” she lifted the drink and took a swig, she smacked her lips happily and nodded.
“Ahhhh, I see. This is one of politics isn’t it? A damn shame these rules…” the bartender paused and then dug for something. “Here..” he pushed over a small round chocolate. “It is silly but, you might appreciate that. A little something to take the edge off, eh?”
Cassandra lifted the chocolate and turned it in her hands – she could smell it, blood in the center. She took a bite and the blood gushed into her mouth, she smiled then and finished it off.
“Nice little treat huh?” He chuckled and nodded. “It’s silly but… Bit of chocolate and our favorite thing… it’s a nice treat when one is heart broken” he then nodded. “I hope the best for you dear… come back when you want another drink hm? I’ll take care of you…” he turned then to another vampire, who ordered.
Cassandra stood from the bar, bringing her drink with her… she walked around – someone tried to ask her to dance but she declined, and then she declined the next 3… the hell she was going to dance. She finished her drink and set it on an empty table, where waiters were going about cleaning up.
Soon she found herself looking to Iris – she snuck over and grasped her hand, pulling her to the balcony outside. “Cannot wait for all of this to be over…” she spoke and then leaned against the rail, looking to her. “He does know that.. this is temporary right?” she questioned. “You both are quite good at faking it, almost scared me..” she crossed her arms. “The whole council is here…”
“Your dad is going to be promoted to the council today, just after all of this – or perhaps even now. His plan is to kind of get to know them right now… based on what he learns today will lead us to our next move. First we need to understand where the ancients are, what the protection looks like… “ she turned her head and Julian stepped out onto the balcony.
Julian wore a navy blue suit, he stepped up to Iris and bowed his head. “My Queen” he smiled and then nodded. “We will be headed back to Netherfall tomorrow, now that our coven has grown by one – he needs to know the truth… About what both of you are… I’m afraid we might return to some bullshit, and it’s either he finds out the hard way, or we warn him?” he questioned. “He is on our side for now, but we can’t give him a reason to betray us and tell his father…” he turned his head then – he could see Riskel standing nearby. “We must return to the play…” he nodded and then walked back inside.
Cassandra looked to Iris and took in a deep breath. “Just… let me know if you need me. I um… I hope he doesn’t make you um… pleasure him.” She stepped forward, she wanted to embrace her, just for a second.. but knew she couldn’t. “You know how to reach me.”

Iris took in a breath as she was whisked away to the balcony. She gave a soft smile. “He understands, we’ve made it quite clear to each other.” Iris sipped her wine and sighed. “I wish all of this could be over now, that whole procession…” She shook her head. “All I could do was wish that it was you that stood across from me…you that held my hands…you that kissed me…” Iris looked out over the city, her eyes glistened slightly.
Iris shifted when Julian came onto the balcony, she looked to him and chuckled. “You don’t have to call me that. It’s only a title.” She shook her head. “Maybe soon a title that I can be relinquished of?” She questioned and sighed softly. She glanced inside when Julian left. She looked to Cassandra and swallowed. “I would surely hope not…” She muttered softly. She watched her a moment, she could feel the yearning to embrace. “I know.” She whispered her eyes danced over Cassandra. “You look beautiful.” She spoke, her voice soft, sweet. She then stepped back inside where she was greeted by Riskel.
“My queen.” He bowed and smiled. “May I have another dance?” He asked and grinned.
Iris looked to him, her eyes tired. Tired of pretending. It had only been a week and she was already so exhausted of it. “Of course my king.” She took his hand and smiled brightly. She giggled as he pulled her in close and they began to dance. The night drew on and soon enough it drew to an end. Riskel held Iris’ hand as he walked her to the room that they were to share for the evening. He pulled her inside and smiled. “The procession went well, huh?” He spoke and searched her eyes.
Iris glanced to him a moment, relaxing finally. “Can’t I sleep in my room?” She asked softly. “Do I have to sleep in here with you?” She raised a brow.
Riskel took in a breath, “We are supposed to…um…” He bit his lip.
Iris shot him a glare, her eyes instantly darkening. She let out a slight growl. “We are also supposed to love each other.” She snapped. “But that part is out of the question. My family is threatened and you can only think of yourself?” She stared to him, her arms crossed.
Riskel took a step back, he raised his brows. “Iris…” He swallowed slightly. “No, I just….” He looked away. “I know that it is expected. It is part of all of this and…”
“No.” Iris responded. “I will not.” She shook her head.
Riskel nodded, “We need to make my father believe that we have…” He spoke searching her eyes, “I don’t want to blow our cover just because you…”
Iris turned and slammed him against the wall, her body pressed to his. “Because I don’t love you.” She spoke. “That’s right. I may be the queen and you may be the king but my mind is set on getting the council to end these threats and allow me my freedom and allow you your own freedom….don’t you see?” She asked.
Riskel watched her, he let out a shaken breath. “Iris…” He breathed.
“No.” She replied and stepped away from him. “You’ll sleep on the couch, unless you’d rather me sleep on the couch.”
“No…no Iris…I’m…sorry….” Riskel stepped toward the couch. He glanced to her as she slipped into the bathroom to change. He let out a long sigh.
**
The next morning, they sat around the dining table. Elena smiled brightly as she looked to the new king and queen. “Ah you two.” She hugged Iris and then hugged Riskel and kissed the top of his head. “You best eat well before you get on the road hm?”
Riskel chuckled, “Ah yes, replenishment and energy for the day.” He grinned.
Nicholai grinned as he heard the word come over his son’s lips. “Ah, you had a good wedding evening then I take it?” He asked.
Riskel grinned and looked to Iris whom bit her lip slightly and blushed on que. “Of course we did, father.” He chuckled. “Isn’t that right my queen?”
“I hardly think this is something that should be spoken of over breakfast.” Iris spoke as she looked to Nicholai.
He grinned then and shook his head. “Ah but it is important that our new king and queen come together in such ways. Isn’t that right Sebastian?”
Sebastian looked to his daughter a moment and then to Nicholai, “Of course.” He responded. “Iris.” He looked to her. “I will be in Raleigh for a few days, with the council to be sworn in.”
Iris nodded, thankful for the change of topic. “Of course father.” She spoke. “We will get settled into the home while you are away.” She finished her orange juice.
**
Soon enough Iris climbed into the seat of her car. She took in a deep breath as she started it. “You’ll sit in the back.” She spoke to Riskel, “Cassandra rides up front…” She spoke her voice soft. She then drove. They drove for hours before Riskel finally fell asleep. “We…didn’t…” She spoke and looked to Cassandra. “It’s a ruse…he slept on the couch…” She whispered. “It’s expected of the newly weds to…unite on their first evening together….so we had to play along…” Iris fell quiet then. She gripped the steering wheel. “I’m so tired of pretending.” She whispered. She glanced into the rearview mirror to Riskel as he slept, his head leaned to the side. “He respected me wishes at least.” She cleared her throat, “Any other pure blood wouldn’t have, I can almost certainly assure you of that.”
**
Iris slowed as they approached the mansion. She drew her brows together. The front door was ajar. “Something…isn’t right…” She whispered.
“What’s going on?” Riskel asked as he looked to the home.
“I’m not sure.” Iris slipped from the car and pulled her pistol. She glanced to Cassandra. “The order?” She questioned. “Would they be this messy?” She looked to the splintered wood on the ground as they entered. “We advance slowly.” She glanced to Julian whom held a dagger. Lucille was behind him with her own pistol. She stepped into the home, listening. Suddenly she was struck from the side, she slammed against the wall and something sharp was put against her neck.
“Drop it!” Julian ordered.
“Go ahead.” The man said. “Try me.” He sliced slightly, drawing blood.
Iris reached up and cupped his cheek. “You don’t want to hurt me.” She whispered. “Why don’t you just drop the dagger, hm?” She smiled sweetly to him.
The man fought himself but the dagger clattered to the floor leaving only a trail of blood on her neck. “I don’t want to hurt you…” He whispered back to her.
Iris smiled, “Good, I’m glad we agree.” She looked over his leathers. “Where are you from?”
“The order sent me. The Commander, to get intel, so we may capture you and Cassandra….alive….” He grit his teeth slightly.
“Anything else I should know?” She asked but he only shook his head. Iris glanced to Cassandra as she gripped the man tightly and slammed him against the wall. “Riskel we need to talk about the coven’s situation.” She spoke as she knocked the man out. “More importantly some of the things you may or may not know.” She pulled him inside. Iris stood before him, telling him what Cassandra was, and what she’d become from the experiments. Riskel’s eyes widened. “Don’t be afraid.” She spoke softly.
“I…I’m not…this is madness…” He spoke and shook his head. “Why didn’t we talk about this?!”
“Did we have a choice in the matter?” She asked roughly.
Riskel loosened slightly. “I suppose not…”
Iris gave a gentle smile. She then looked to the human that lay on the floor. “Do you know him Cass?” She asked softly. “Could he be of use? Or should we kill him now?”

As the night moved on – Cassandra returned several times to the bar, until finally Julian came upon her. He held a glass in his hand – water. He handed it to her and led her down the hallway, away from the ballroom. “It has been quite an adventure these past 4 months hm?” he sipped on his own glass of water. “I suppose maybe you have been my greatest mistake” he chuckled.
Cassandra glanced to him, drinking her water – she was happy he brought it to her, as she was beginning to get quite drunk, it was good to stop and hydrate… “5 months ago… I could of never imagined my life like this, everything I knew has been flipped upside down” she chuckled “but some how I’m not surprised, this cluster fuck seems homely to me”
Julian turned the hallway, leading her to where all the guest rooms are. “Well that is good at least, sounds like you fit here amongst this crowd of misfits and rebels” he chuckled. “You are apart of this coven now, remember that. You always have a place among us…” he finished his glass, and held it down at his side. “I apologize for my behaviors in the past…” he opened her door, which lead to an empty bedroom.
“It’s okay Julian.. things happen… I am here now, am I not?” she stepped inside and then stopped, she leaned against the door frame and looked to him… “I don’t know why I like her so much…” she whispered, chuckling slightly.
Julian grinned and put his hands on his hips. “Who, Iris? She is charming, loyal, sweet and beautiful, there is some kind of alluring aura to her, but something tells me you two just… click in that sweet way…” he chuckled once more. “Be thankful, and enjoy it – as difficult as it is right now… Many of us vampires grow old, hundreds of years – of quiet solitude, which eats you up on the inside. To have found someone who makes you feel happy? Theres no reason why you cannot cherish that… don’t be afraid of it” he nodded. “You are lucky… Cassandra” he then stepped back . “Good night” and he turned around, walking to his own room.
Cassandra turned and closed the door – her eyes looked to the bed, the empty bed… Iris was with the King now, with Riskel… She moved over to the bed and sat down… she untied her dress and slipped from it, crawling into the sheets after words…
***
The morning came – Cassandra couldn’t bear to meet the others at breakfast, she didn’t care to look at Nicolais face, his wife.. his family. It made her blood boil. Instead she teleported away, into town – where she grabbed breakfast from a local bakery. Soon after she waited at the car, her bags packed and inside…
As the others caught up – she climbed into the car and looked to the back, chuckling to herself as the mighty King rode in the back… She glanced to Iris and nodded. She was back in her fighter attire – her sword on her back, guns and daggers… ready for anything…
“I know you didn’t…I… might have been eavesdropping.” She grinned and then sighed. “I’m sure you’ll make it up to me” she winked “another log cabin get away soon?” she playfully smiled…
As they pulled up – something felt wrong. Cassandra emerged from the car and made her way to the door… she drew her sword and glanced about… “Yeah they can be vicious sometimes, no different than Lycans… thirsty for war…” she gripped her blade and followed in.
The next few moments passed by quickly – she looked to the man of the Order… “Peter… he – he just does as he is told, he has a family… children… Tell him to forget his mission – to go home… pack his bags, gather his family and move…” she looked to him with soft eyes. “He is a good man…”
As soon as it was said – he was gone.. She crossed her arms and sighed. “A lot of people are roped into the Order because they have no choice – money is short, or their life is on the line… he doesn’t need to die today out of his desperate acts of support his family… not by my hands…” she looked to the ground – a letter that he dropped.
Cassandra opened it and read it…
Cassandra…
I knew very well that you would come across this letter…. You should know that we are actively searching for you, and will not stop until you are in my grasp… You and your precious coven are doomed. Give in and save your Coven, or they die and I make you my blood bank…
Cassandra crumpled the letter and threw it down. “Seems they ramsacked the place trying to find us…left Peter here to wait. Let’s search the place and see if there’s anything missing – whatever they might have taken – they would have assumed to be a lead… if we can figure anything out then we can try and stay a step ahead of them, but no doubt they will return here… at some point…” Cassandra looked to Iris, to Riskel…
Lucille stepped past them and began to search around, many vases and statues had been knocked over – pictures ripped out and ripped. She growled as she picked up the pieces, and continued onward.
Cassandra crossed her arms and looked to Riskel. “Now you know why we had to do it? Attack the Lycans? We had little to no choice in the matter, or else we would have happily hid away, but both the Lycans and The Order are on us like stink on shit… turns out the Order is being lead by a vampire, which really grinds my gears…” she sheathed her sword and stepped away…..
As she entered the bedroom – she grit her teeth … Bran’s urn was broken, the ashes dumped out on over the bed. Drawn into the ashes was a note. “Pathetic”
Cassandra grit her teeth and squeezed her fists together. “I’ll fucking kill him” she spoke through her teeth… tears were streaming down her face now… Dark Black runes began to crawl across her arms as her rage boiled on, but the runes continued to grow – and grow, until her entire body was black, like a shadow of hatred… Her eyes were glowing bright yellow, the only thing that could be discerned from the figure.
The world began to shake, not just the house – the earth rumbled, out side an entire tree cracked down the center and split into two. Dark thick clouds rolled in and the wind kicked up, lightning struck and a tornado formed off in the distance… All fueled off of her rage – anger – hatred… Her body began to tremble with power – to point were it was almost self destructive.. any moment she might… explode…

Iris was in another room. She lifted a ripped image of her and her parents into her hands and sighed softly. Riskel was behind her. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know.” He spoke as he looked around to the destruction. “Why didn’t you ask for help?”
“We did.” Iris spoke her eyes glared to him. “Don’t you understand? My father went to the council more than once when all of this happened.” She shook her head. “Everything is in a downhill spiral and now you’re along for the ride so you’d better strap in tight.”
The house began to shake then. Iris stumbled. She held onto the wall as she heard wind whip outside. “Cass…” She spoke as she rushed from the room. She ran down the hallway, falling against the wall once or twice when she’d lost her balance.
“Iris!” Riskel chased after her, just a few feet behind.
Iris rushed into the room. “Cass!” She cried as she stepped to the shadowy figure. She wrapped her arms around her. “Focus.” She breathed. Iris closed her eyes tightly she took in several deep breaths, then suddenly they teleported. Iris clutched onto Cassandra as they stood in a field of flowers. She took in quick breaths, blood trickled from her nose. “D-don’t let him fuel you like this. That is what they want…they want you to destroy yourself…to destroy us…” She whispered. She leaned forward and pressed her lips to Cassandra’s then, her hands on either side of her face. The passion behind the kiss was incredibly strong. She stepped back and staggered slightly, “Cass…don’t let them control you.” She whispered. “You’re better than that.”
**
Julian rushed in behind where Iris had been. “What’s happened?!” He looked around, the storm had disappeared, the shaking stopped just as suddenly as it all came.
“They disappeared…” Riskel stood staring to the spot of soot. “Just…vanished….”
“Ah…yes…” Julian spoke, “Did we forget to mention that Cassandra is capable of that?” He let out a soft chuckle. “There is much you do not know, Riskel.” He then looked to the ashes on the bed. “Ah…” He nodded slowly. “I see.” He gathered a metal vase and scooped the ashes into it. “These are her fallen comrades ashes, he meant a lot to her…to do something like this to him…and defile him like that…I can see why she was so upset.”
“How does she…do that?” Riskel questioned.
“It is a power that only the ancients possessed.” Lucille spoke as she came into the room. “A power that we all are said to hold, but I haven’t ever seen this power used. Not until we found Cassandra.” She crossed her arms. “Now you understand the importance of righting everything. Don’t you?”
Riskel gave a slow nod. “You can’t tell the council of the power that these two hold…it would be their death…and Iris being part Lycan…” He looked to Lucille.
“Yes my king, it is an unfortunate thing, though our bloodline carries the original strain of wolf blood, she isn’t a Lycan per say.” She smiled and let out a soft chuckle.
**
Iris lay in the field with Cassandra held to her chest, her breaths quick. The flowers lay around them tall enough to conceal them and hide them within the valley. The sun felt incredible against her skin, its warmth seemed to surround her. “A trip to the cabin may have been too far.” She let out a soft chuckle. “So tell me, how do we stop them? Is there a weakness we can exploit to stop the order from chasing after us?”
