Skylar’s eyes looked away as Mavis took his wrath out on Eva. She winced with each groan and cry. She began to sob, she pulled against the bonds weakly. “Please…stop…” She whispered. “Booker…make…him stop…” She pleaded. She leaned her head back as the knight came into the room. Skylar glanced as her father left, reluctantly. Her head rolled forward, she felt a strange feeling cross through her body. The shadows in the room seemed to quiver. Skylar took in quick sharp breaths, hyperventilating. She grit her teeth, “You have to stop.” She spoke and shut her eyes tightly.
Booker stepped forward, “Princess?” He asked.
Skylar opened her eyes and stared up to him, the crystal blue seemed to cut through him. “Let me go.” She demanded.
“I can’t do that.” Booker shook his head.
Skylar leaned her head back as she was filled with this strange burst of energy. She gasped as a burst of power came from her body, a wave washed through the room, knocking Booker back a few steps. Skylar let out a cry as her powers began to surge through her body, she felt as though she was on fire. The shadows surrounded her as she pulled at the restraints. She cried out in pain and slammed her head against the back of the chair, “Eva….” She grit her teeth. She shut her eyes tightly again, another burst of power. This time Booker slammed into the wall and fell to his knees. The bonds on Skylar’s wrists fell away. She slumped from the chair, breathing heavily. Skylar stayed there on her hands and knees for a long moment.
Booker approached her. “Princess?” He asked.
Skylar reached up and gripped his wrist, she jerked him forward and slammed him into the ground. She grabbed a set of cuffs and slapped them onto his wrists before she stood. Skylar wobbled slightly. “I’m…going to…get you out…” She leaned forward, she pressed her hand to Eva’s bloody cheek. Her power came from her body, seeping into Eva, just as Eva had done with her. Giving her power, helping to speed her recovery. Skylar’s nose dripped blood as she moved to the table that held tools. “You…didn’t…deserve this…” She whispered, “Eva…” She grasped a key and fell to her knees. Her powers were crushing her. Skylar let out an agonizing groan as she moved to Eva and clicked the bonds from their places. She stared to Eva for a moment and brushed the blood from her nose. “He’s going to kill you.” She whispered. “He’ll never understand Eva…” She collapsed forward then onto the ground next to Eva on the floor, unconscious. The medication her father had given her, in conjunction with her powers seeping into her body had caused a bit of an overload.
**
Mavis looked up to the dragon, his face full of awe. He’d heard the stories of dragon riders, but just the stories. “It’s true?” He questioned. He looked to Earon. He let out a chuckle at the demands of the man. “You know, your soldier led the Divici to us? She had them attack and nearly kill my daughter, the princess. Those are pretty hefty fines, sir.” He looked to the dragon, “I can’t release her.” He shook his head, “She has lied and caused several men and women, even children in this kingdom to die, and others to suffer. Her trickery got my daughter injured.” He spoke and searched Earon’s eyes. “How could you demand that I release her, when she has committed such crimes?”
**
Alden stepped into the dungeon, he looked around and pushed open the cracked door to the torture room. “Oh god! Skylar!” He ran forward and knelt next to her. He looked to Eva, her wrist was still locked into place, Skylar didn’t have enough time to fully unlock her.
“Lock her up!” Booker writhed on the floor. “Lock her back up! She’s dangerous!”
Alden stepped to Booker, “Shut up.” He kicked him in the head, knocking him unconscious. He then looked to Eva for a moment before he grabbed the key from the floor that clattered across the stone when Skylar fell. He stepped in front of Eva and gently cupped her jaw, looking to her injuries. He shook his head. “I’m sorry for this.” He spoke, “No one deserves this. I’m not sure what has gotten into the king. It makes us no better than our enemy to treat another human being in such a way.” He then knelt down and lifted Skylar into his arms gently. He looked to Eva’s legs, bloodied from the king’s blows. “One moment.” He spoke as he left the room with Skylar. He carried her through the maze of tunnels that led to the medical unit within the castle. “Knightley.” He called as he set his wife down.
Dr. Knightley came rushing into the room. “Th-There’s a dragon outside!” She spoke with wide eyes. She then looked to Skylar. “Oh…princess…” She stepped forward and began tending to the cuts on her wrists. “What happened?” She brushed blood from Skylar’s nose.
“I’m not sure yet. I found her this way.” Alden stepped off back to the dungeon. He stepped to Eva and lifted her, “Is the dragon here for you?” He questioned, “Skylar believes you didn’t have anything to do with the Divici. Is this true?” He asked as he carried her toward where the others were held. He believed Skylar. As much as he shouldn’t, he believed her because he was to rule this kingdom with her. “Of anyone, Skylar knows you the best. She demands that you’ve done nothing but protect her.” He spoke as he stepped to the cell where Ren and the others were held. He set her down gently and turned to Ren. He shut the door to the cell and took in a deep breath, “Tell me.” He looked to Ren. “What is it that is truly going on? I trust my wife.” He gave a nod. “But, I need something to go with…”
**
Skylar’s eyes cracked open. “Eva…” She took in a sharp breath. Her eyes were emerald green and crystal blue marbled together once again.
“Princess.” Dr. Knightley spoke as she finished wrapping up her wrist. “Relax.”
Skylar sat up and looked around. “Where is Eva? What happened?” She went to stand but was pushed back down.
“You’re alright, just relax. I’m sure everything is fine.” Dr. Knightley gave a gentle smile.
“No…no I can’t…I…” Skylar stood and ran from the room, pushing passed Dr. Knightley. She sprinted with blurry vision through the halls. “Eva…” She leaned against a wall, trying to gain her balance.
“You’re supposed to forget.” The voice of the Black Knight spoke. “How do you remember?” He gripped her tightly around her throat. Skylar gripped onto his wrist, she writhed in his grip, she couldn’t breathe, she wasn’t strong enough to fight back. The knight began to chuckle, his fiery eyes staring at her. “You’ll forget.” He slammed her against the wall, Skylar let out a cry. The Knight chuckled again, “You’ll never be able to fight back.” He slammed her again, this time she slipped away into the black abyss. The Black Knight chuckled as he disappeared into the shadows.
**
Skylar slammed into the ground, it was freezing. Her body was in an incredible amount of pain. She rolled to her side and looked around the pitch-black world. “Wh…what’s going on?” She questioned as she pushed herself to her feet. She looked to her hands which flickered. “Eva…?” She spun around, she couldn’t see anything at all. She ran in one direction for what felt like an hour, only to find that she was locked away in this world of shadows.

Earon shook his head slowly as Mavis spoke. “You mean well, I am sure” he spoke and stepped over near the giant leg of his dragon. Delia moved her huge head, glancing down to Earon, then back up to the skies – watching calmly. Her giant wings shifted slightly, at one point they stretched outward as she gave a yawn… Earon looked to Mavis and then spoke calmly. “Unfortunately you have been mistaken. While it may seem she deceived you, Eva studied you closely before picking her plan of action. Obviously as you cannot see the bigger picture of the situation, you wouldn’t dare see the truth in some one you don’t know… claiming that a Prince was a conspirator with the Divisi, you tell me you would believe that? Of course not. So she slipped under cover, all in hopes to save your daughter. Which if I am not mistaken… she did, and was hurt badly in the process…”
Earon crossed his arms and then gave a sigh. “I do not demand anything, I only request it. I can promise you that her intentions were true. Had she truly not been there, the Divisi would have demolished this kingdom. Let me ask you this… did it seem his family gave up too easily?” he looked up to his dragon, and then back. “Have you seen the Dark Knight? The Knight of full Black?” he questioned, stepping forward. “He is the being of this true disaster. Divisi… men half human, half demon, Divided. He is playing you, ripping away one of the few assets you have against this beast…”
“I’m not here to rescue her, she doesn’t need it. If she wanted to escape, she would have already. She wouldn’t have willingly came in so easily… I’m here to tell you that you’re making a big mistake..” he stepped over to his dragon and jumped onto her back. Delia flapped her huge wings and then lifted into the air with ease, bolting off into the sky like a red shining ruby…
**
Eva groaned as Skylar released her, she fell forward and held herself up, her palms on the ground. She grunted as she was pulled upward by Alden. Before she knew it she stood in the cell, her hands clasped around the bars. She let out a painful sigh and then nodded. “The dragon is Delia, she follows the Ranger Leader – Earon. He is here on behalf of me” she took in a deep breath, her eyebrows squeezing shut – her body was wrecked with pain. “I am a Ranger, I have been tasked to take out the Divisi. Jasper was my lead, I knew Mavis wouldn’t listen to me if I showed up and told him that… Now the Divisi leader, some kind of Black Knight.. he is playing the King, trying to get you to kill me. He knows I am honorable, I wouldn’t run..” she collapsed then to her knees.
“He is here, this knight. The attacks… they’re just child’s play..” she whispered. Ren fought against her chains. “Eva!” she cried out. Eva turned to Ren and then moved over to her, her hands pulled at the chains – a small blast of power – and the chains were broken. Ren grabbed at Eva and pulled her close – Eva’s body began to shake, the poison was seeping into her veins, moving to her entire body…
Eva’s head perked up suddenly, her body quaking in power. “We… have to go” she spoke and stood up slowly. She held her hand out and suddenly the shackles amongst the others released. “Ren…” he teleported them outside of the cell. “You three – head back to the Inn. Stay safe” she spoke and then stepped down the hallway.
“I’m coming!” Ren called out and reached down, pulling at Booker’s sword. She held the sword in her hand and followed behind Eva – who rushed up the stairs. She burst through the doors just as Delia flew high into the sky. Eva glanced to Ren and grabbed her – teleporting swiftly. Eva let out a groan as they slammed against a wall, they were inside the castle. “We have to find Skylar” she groaned – her hand on her sliced chest. As they came through the corridors – there was an evil laugh from inside… the Black Knight. “That’s him” she spoke and moved against the wall – heading through the corridors.
As they rounded the corner - Eva saw Skylar laying on the ground. In an instant the Black Knight slammed into her, holding his sword up against her nose. “Not bad” he laughed and stepped back. He held his sword out to Ren, and then flicked it. Ren instantly threw Booker’s blade to Eva – who grabbed it out of the air. Eva stepped forward weakly and grit her teeth. Instantly the Black Knight flew forward in an flurry of attacks. Eva blocked them as she could, she ducked just in time for his blade to swing into the thick walls. Sparks flew in the dark corridor, and the Black Knight chuckled.
Eva thrust her blade forward, but it was knocked away with ease. The black skipped along the ground and the Black Knight approached her. “I thought this was going to be harder” he spoke with a pouty voice. The Knight lifted Eva up by her throat then, gripping tightly. Then suddenly a sword piercing through his chest. The Knight dropped Eva and grabbed the sword, laughing deeply. He turned the blade inside of him, and then gripped the blade, pulling it through his body – hilt and all. He turned and held the blade out, it was covered in a black oozing blood.
“You will have to try harder, little girl” he spoke and dropped the blade, staring directly at Ren. Suddenly the knight fell backward, Eva had wrapped her arm about his throat, pulling him to the ground. His giant body crushed Eva, her wound on her chest opening up and flooding blood outward. Eva groaned and pulled at her arm, trying to choke him….

Alden fumbled with the keys as he watched the group run up the stairs. “Wait!” He called. He dropped the keys on the ground and groaned. In the next moment Mavis was at the gate. “Let me out.” Alden spoke to him.
“Where is Skylar?” Mavis asked. “What happened with Booker?” He unlocked the gate.
“I don’t have time now, my king.” Alden spoke as he sprinted off down the hallways. He ran up the stairs and into the medical wing. “Where is she?” He asked as he came to Dr. Knightley. She looked to him with wide eyes and shook her head. “Come.” He grabbed a travel bag and sprinted off down the hallways. “She couldn’t have made it far. She was weak…” He looked over his shoulder.
Dr. Knightley grabbed another bag and raced after him. “The Dragon just took off! It didn’t attack us…” She made it to his side as they rounded a corner. “Oh…” She skidded to a stop, her hand on Alden’s chest. “This…isn’t good.” She whispered as she watched Eva attempt to fight the black knight.
Alden stared to Skylar whom lay unconscious on the ground. “We have to do something.” He rushed forward just as Eva choked the knight. He slid his dagger from his belt as he approached. He grabbed the black knight and ripped him from atop of Eva. He slammed his back to the ground and was instantly on top of him, his forearm pressed into the Knight’s neck. “What did you do?” He growled and put more weight into his arm.
Dr. Knightley rushed forward, she looked to Ren for a moment. “You. Help me over here!” She called. “Grab the princess.” She pointed, “Follow me.” She scooped Eva up the best she could, Eva’s legs still dragged along the ground as she pulled Eva toward the medical wing.
The black knight let out a deep chuckle as he slammed his armored fist into Alden’s side, again and again until Alden couldn’t keep his pressure against the knight’s neck. When his hold broke the knight tossed him to the side like a rag doll. “It isn’t that easy.” He spoke as he slammed a kick into Alden’s chest, knocking him back against the wall, his dagger clattered to the ground, the sound echoed down the empty hallway. The knight stepped forward and gripped Alden’s throat, he chuckled darkly then. “This will be fun.” He nodded and released him. “Your dear lover isn’t going to wake up, not any time soon that is.” He snickered before he melted away into the shadows. Not leaving a trace.
Alden coughed, on his hands and knees. “Wh…what?” He looked around, he scrambled to his feet and grabbed his dagger before he rushed down the hall after Dr. Knightley. “Knightley!!” He called as he stumbled into the wall. He had a gash from the Knight’s fist on the side of his face. Blood soaked into his tunic along his rib cage.
“Prince Windsor!” Dr. Knightley exclaimed, she looked back to Eva. “I’ll get to you in a moment…there…is so much…I…” She was overwhelmed. She poured saline on Eva’s chest, cleansing the wound. “Tyrin!!!” She called.
A young woman came running into the room. Her assistant. “Dr. Knightley?” She asked.
“I need your help.” She spoke and gave a nod. “We need to fill her with fluid. Something has happened…” She shook her head. “We need to stabilize her…”
Alden stepped to Skylar and took her hand into his. “Sky…” He spoke softly. Blood dripped from his wound and fell onto the back of his hand that held hers. Her hand was cold, her skin pale. Blood leaked from her nose. “What happened Dr. Knightley?” He asked, his voice soft, sad.
**
“Somebody?!” Skylar screamed. She appeared in a frozen wasteland. Snow fell all around her. She slipped on ice beneath the snow and tumbled down a hill, she cried out as her back landed harshly against a huge boulder. She fought to breathe as she stared up to the falling snow, her body trembled. “Help!!” She called out, her voice weak this time. She rolled to her side and slowly pushed herself up. Blood dripped from her nose, the snow beneath her began to stain red. She wrapped her arms around her body, everything hurt. It was so cold. She shivered as she took a step forward. “Anyone?” She whispered, her voice fearful.
“Having fun yet?” The black knight asked. As Skylar spun around he grabbed her at her throat. “You’re going to stay here, until you forget it all again.” He snarled. “You’re not allowed to remember, I’ll make you forget everything!” He tossed her over the edge.
Skylar screamed as she fell off the cliff. She tossed and turned wildly in the air, trying to gain control over her body. Wind blew against her violently. Suddenly the shadows surrounded her and she jumped forward to the ground below. Skylar stumbled and fell to her knees. She took in quick breaths as she looked to her trembling hands. “I won’t forget…” She whispered. She ran forward, leaping through the shadows.
The knight appeared suddenly and slammed her to her back. “You will.” He growled deeply as he held her by her neck. He slammed his fist into the side of her head and everything faded away….

As Eva fell to the ground she felt her entire body rage. Lifting directly from her body was her soul, blue and wispy. She jumped forward and placed her hand on Skylar’s head. Instantly the entire world turned black, she entered the dream state that the Black Knight had thrown her into. “Skylar!!” She shouted and turned swiftly. She saw the Black Knight in the distance holding Skylar in the air – his huge fist coming down upon her.
Eva grit her teeth and shot forward, she tackled the Black Knight in an instant. She held her palm over his black helmet and blasted power into his face. Except there was only a chuckle. “This is no more real than your fantasies” he spoke from a distance. Suddenly the Black Knight was gone and there was a chuckling in the echoing darkness. Eva rushed over then to Skylar, who lay on the ground.
“Sky” he whispered and pulled her body, lifting her into her lap. She cupped Skylar’s cheeks and shut her eyes. “Skylar I know you’re there” she whispered and leaned down - kissing her sweetly. In that moment she forced every memory she had from her body. Appearing around them were huge projections, each area was a different memory. Eva turned her head and glanced forward – the ice skating on the frozen bond. She turned her gaze and looked to them riding in Rocket. The second was them laughing – their hair and clothing different… it was their first world, in the thieves guild.
“Sky.. look” she helped Skylar get up. She led her forward through the memories, stepping between one projection to the next. As they approached they stopped infront of one, noises came from the scene…
I am Skylar Greystoke, I am a part of the Nighthand Guild, I am the leader, to be exact.” She looked out to the streets once more, trying to decide how much time they had before it was too late. “You, Eva, you have a gift, I’m not sure what it is quite yet.” She pulled the compass from her pocket again and set it on the counter. It pointed directly to Eva and pulsed brightly. “This is how I found you, this is how I know. Now, we don’t have much time. I will return tonight and we will talk more. Until then.” She gave a smile and snapped her fingers. With that time froze and in an instant Booker and Skylar disappeared from the shop… Eva stood then staring to the door, her mouth agape..
Eva grinned and then shook her head “To me magic didn’t exist then” she turned her head and then looked to Skylar. “Skylar… there are two Skylar’s in that body. The Sky I know, the one from the Nighthand Guild, the one who loves Mini Coopers and drinking tea about the fire – she is in there. You have to find her, you have to unblock whatever madness that demonic fool placed around you. If we are going to make it, I need your help” she placed her hands on Skylar’s shoulders and looked to her.
“Do you remember this one?” she questioned as they came to the Ballroom – the two were dancing beautifully in masks… one of their first missions together. “This one was special” she whispered…”
**
“Her heart has stopped!!” Tyrin shouted as she tended to Eva. “She’s – she’s dead!”
Dr. Knightley rushed over and placed her palms on Eva’s chest, compressions. Dr. Knightley whispered to herself as she continued, her breath heaving with each motion. “Come on damnit” she whispered. “I believe in you” she shook her head. “We need you” she continued.
** “Sky..” her body flickered. She grasped onto Skylar’s body and took in a huge breath. Suddenly she disappeared – her soul being summoned back to her body. As her blue self flew through the world – she let go of Skylar just as she came to her own body. Skylar would be thrown back into her own mind…
Eva sat up and gasped.
“H- How?!” Tyrin rushed over.
Dr.Knightley grinned “she’s unique” she spoke and pressed Eva’s chest, so that she would lay down.
“Skylar –“ Eva turned her head and looked to Skylar. “Skylar – are you with me?” she spoke and held her hand out – her fingertips just grazing Skylar’s shoulder…

Skylar’s eyes fluttered open, she had a deep bruise about her cheek from the heavy punches from the Black Knight. She stared up at Eva after the kiss, the passion she’d felt in the kiss. “Eva…” She whispered as they stood and stepped through the memories. She stumbled slightly, this was overwhelming. She held onto Eva, a bit of blood trickled from her nose. A small smile curved up her lips as she watched all the memories, and then the memory of when they first met. The first meeting ever between the two. She let out a laugh, “So forward.” She chuckled.
Skylar stared into Eva’s eyes as she grasped her shoulders. “Eva…” She spoke then as the ballroom appeared around them. She remembered the feeling of that night. How great it felt to dance with Eva, how fluid it was. How perfect. In the next moment Eva was flickering. “Eva…wait!” She furrowed her brows, they were tugged forward from the spirit world. She tumbled through the space with Eva, a scream came over her lips as Eva released her. “Eva!” She cried as she stopped suddenly.
“Where do you think you’re going?” The Black Knight growled. “I’m not finished.” He took her and spun, tossing her at high speed through the darkness.
Skylar flew through the abyss, tumbling, screaming. Then suddenly she slammed harshly into a cold icy trunk of a tree. Skylar slid down the trunk to the snowy ground, her eyes stared forward as the Black Knight stepped toward her.
**
Alden held Skylar in his lap, he looked to Dr. Knightley as she brought Eva miraculously back to life. Then suddenly Skylar took in a sharp breath, her eyes shot open for a second. She stared off into space, a pained expression on her face. “Sky?” He asked. He looked to Eva’s fingertips on her shoulder. Skylar’s body tensed then, her eyes squeezed shut, her hands balled into fists and then suddenly she fell limp. This was the moment that the Black Knight had ripped her back into his world. Her nose began to bleed in this moment, reflecting her injuries that the Knight had inflicted on her. Bruises began to appear on her skin, deep bruises around her neck where he held her.
Alden took in fast breaths, “Knightley do something!” He pleaded.
Dr. Knightley looked to Eva a curious expression on her face. “What is causing this? You know don’t you Eva?”
“How would she--….”
“Shh.” Dr. Knightley looked to him. “All due respect to you Prince Windsor, but Eva deals in Dragons, and other unearthly things, such as all of the strange things that have been happening around here. So, I suggest that you listen, maybe we can save the princess?”
Alden took in a breath, he moved and pulled a blanket up over Skylar, her body was freezing cold. He then looked to Eva, awaiting an answer.
**
“So what? You’ll kill me?” Skylar spoke, her head pressed against the tree as the Knight held his hand tightly around her throat. She took her hands and slammed them into his chest, a burst of power rushed into him, knocking him back. Skylar snapped her fingers and rushed forward, she jumped onto him and snapped her fingers again before she hooked her fists into his head, knocking the helmet away to reveal the man beneath the mask.
He chuckled as she threw punches at him, then suddenly he gripped both of her wrists. “It seems the more you use your magic the more you remember, hm?” He flipped her onto her back and pinned her down. His eyes no longer glowed red, though they were black pits. His skin was pale as could be. His hair black as the night and short. He looked like a nightmare.
Skylar thrashed against him. “Let me go!” She screamed, she slipped from his grip by melting into the shadows and appeared next to him where she landed a hard kick into his side.
The knight snickered once again as he disappeared. He appeared and slammed her against the tree again. “You’re going to have to try harder than that, Skylar.” He had his helmet back on, the red of his eyes seemed to burn into her soul. “Let’s…..try….” He seemed to ponder for a moment. “Ah yes.” He plucked a sword from thin air. “This.” He snarled as he drove the blade into her body. The blade was the same red blade that Eva had when she’d pretended to be Yevon. Skylar looked down to her abdomen, she gasped, her body began to fill with pain. The knight shoved the blade deeper, pushing it through the tree until only the hilt stuck from her body. He cupped her chin in his fingertips that were covered in her blood. “Maybe you’ll forget now?” He chuckled and disappeared.
Skylar gasped, she could taste her blood in her mouth. She tried to pull at the blade but she didn’t have enough strength to pull it from her body. It was almost as if it was making her weak. “E-Eva…” She choked, her blood leaked over her lips. Skylar shut her eyes tightly. “Come on….” She pulled at the blade as hard as she could. After several minutes of trying she found herself to be too weak to fight it anymore. She was beginning to feel dizzy, to lose her grip. “Just…try…” She took in a sharp breath and shut her eyes tightly.
**
“Dr. Knightley!!!” Alden exclaimed.
Tyrin looked, “Dammit! Dr. Knightley!” She rushed to Skylar and turned her onto her side. Skylar was gasping for air, blood drained from her mouth. Her eyes fluttered open and she gripped her abdomen where the blade had pierced her.
Skylar’s eyes fluttered as she fought to hold on to reality. “Eva…” She whispered, her voice shaky.

Eva scrambled from the bed the moment that Skylar sat upward. Instantly she felt a hand tug on her shoulder, Alden was holding her back. Eva shoved his hand away and then glanced to him. “I’ve been in this fight for a long fucking time” Eva growled and then placed her hands on each side of Skylar’s head. “This might be my only chance… to stop this, to save Skylar” Eva leaned her head down and pressed her forehead against Skylar’s. Her hands glowed a gentle purple and Eva took in a deep breath.
“Guard us” Eva whispered and she felt a rush of power. A surge flowed from her eyes and seeped into Skylars, in the same moment she seemed to meld with Skylar. The world moved swiftly – her soul searching Skylars. They flew through some sort of dimension, until finally it came to a halt. She stared to Skylar who held the blade that was stuck through her.
“Skylar!!!!!” She shouted and rushed forward. She instantly was thrown back, a laugh rumbling in the room. Eva was thrown to the ground, groaning in pain from the hit. Eva slowly stood back up and went for Skylar again. She was instantly thrown to the ground again. “Don’t piss me off” Eva grunted, she stood back up and teleported forward.
The Black Knight appeared and tried to grab her – but only fell through an allusion. The entire room swarmed with Eva’s who moved about. The real Eva stood – looking to Skylar. “Sky” she whispered and leaned inward. “Remember who you are” she pressed her palm against her cheek and looked to her. “You are a grim reaper, a master of time, master of the shadows. You are their greatest fear” she whispered and grabbed the hilt of the blade. “I am the god of Dimensions, the keeper” she then pulled the blade slightly. “You – you are beyond power, we together…” she pulled the blade and filled Skylar with as much power as she could. “We together can defeat anything”
Suddenly all the Eva’s slammed into her body and a huge blast of power flew through the air. She teleported away and caught the Black Knight’s blade with her own. “Skylar!” she shouted – her voice echoing in the air. “You were once the leader of the Nighthand Guild! You lead the revolution!” She shouted as her sword clanged with the Knights. “You were once the ruler of the ring, and a justice fighter in the ways of law!!!” she grunted as she threw her sword forward. “You were once a hybrid of two foes, the key to their war!” she fell to the ground and scrambled backwards.
The Black Knight stepped forward with each foot that Eva slipped back. “Us – together” she shouted. The Black Knight picked up Skylar and laughed in her face. “She won’t remember… you are but a wispy shadow in the past. Floating away into the abys…”
“Did you think it was going to be that easy?” Eva spoke through her teeth. She teleported instantly, bringing the Knight with her. She teleported with speed, until he was finally thrown off of her. He stumbled and gripped his sword, chuckling. In an instantly Divisi men rose from the dark ground and stood before her. “Yeah” he spoke and the men instantly shot forward. Eva brought her sword up – slicing through them easily. Though it seemed they never stopped coming… it was one after another. They did not fight well, but that was not the point...
Eva felt a sudden slash – the Black Knight appeared and cut her rips with his blade. Eva cried out and teleported swiftly – only to be over-ran by more Divisi. Eva’s eyes glanced to Skylar – and then she was shoved to the ground. The Black Knight held the tip of his blade to her throat. “Any last words?”

Skylar grit her teeth as Eva gripped her face. “E-Eva…” She whispered, blood on her lips. She leaned her head into Eva’s, her body shuddered.
“Skylar?” Alden placed his hand on her shoulder. “Eva what are you doing?” He furrowed his brows as Skylar took in a shaken breath and shut her eyes. “Eva?” He reached forward as her hands turned purple and she asked for protection. From what? He grasped her forearm just as both Eva and Skylar fell limp. “What is going on?” He caught Skylar in his arms.
Dr. Knightley caught Eva and carefully slipped her onto the bed that was next to Skylar’s. “A very old forgotten art.” She said with a smile on her lips. She looked to Alden, “Do you believe in magic, Alden?” She asked.
Alden looked to her with his brows drawn together. “If you’d asked me that before the Black Knight, before seeing the dragon, I would say no.” He shook his head. “This is absurd, this whole situation.” He huffed.
Dr. Knightley stepped forward, “The ways of the old were lost years ago, the people, those who possess magic, they were forced into hiding. Forced into the shadows, forced to hide whom they truly were.” She placed her hand on Skylar’s forearm, a green glow came from the palm of her hand, she let her eyes slip shut. Skylar’s breathing began to level out, the blood from her nose and mouth stopped.
“Wh….” Alden stared to her in disbelief. “You…You’re….” He stood, his eyes wide.
Dr. Knightley gave a nod. “Why do you think the king chose me as his one and only medic?” She questioned. “If need be, I use my powers. I’m not a monster.” She shook her head. “Queen Greystoke is not a monster either.”
“She? But…” He looked to Skylar. “Does she?” He asked. “Can she?”
“I wasn’t sure until now, but…” Dr. Knightley gave a smile and then a nod. “I’m fairly certain that she possesses more power than her mother.”
**
“Eva!!” Skylar cried as Eva was thrown away from her, tears ran down her cheeks. Her hands pulled at the hilt that was stuck into the tree, her blood was warm against her abdomen, the cut was hot like a fire. Skylar’s breaths shook, blood leaked from her nose and mouth, she was dying. She leaned forward, her eyes fluttered as she felt Eva’s gentle touch. “Eva…” She whispered, blood dripped from her mouth. She brought her eyes to look to Eva as she spoke. When she pulled at the blade Skylar let out a groan of pain. “D-don’t…it…” She grit her teeth and let out a scream of pain when Eva pulled the blade from her body. Skylar gasped as Eva filled her with power, she collapsed forward onto her knees, blood gushed from the wound.
Skylar held her abdomen, her eyes fluttered as she watched the duel take place. “Leader…” She whispered, she stumbled to her feet, her body weak. She took a step forward and stumbled, falling back to her hands and knees. It was that moment that Dr. Knightley healed her in the real world, a green glow grew over her body, she felt warm. Skylar looked up as the Black Knight grabbed Eva. She pushed herself up and stumbled, her hand pushed against the frozen trunk of the tree that she’d been skewered to. “I’ve been many things…” She whispered to herself. She took a step forward, her body trembled slightly. She was shoved to her back by a Divici soldier. Skylar fought with him, she groaned and flipped to her side rolling him onto his back. She gripped onto his blade and forced it into his chest. Skylar ripped the blade from him and spun.
Any last words? The Black Knight’s voice echoed through the frozen landscape.
Skylar leaped forward through the shadows with incredible speed, her arms gripped around the knight’s waist as she slammed into him. Skylar took him to the ground, she took the blade and brought it down into his chest harshly. It stuck into the frozen ground. “Fuck you!” She snapped as she kicked his head. She spun around as he chuckled and gripped at the hilt of the blade. “Eva…” She lifted her and placed her hand on Eva’s cheek. Skylar placed her hand on Eva’s side, shadows surrounded her hand and rushed around the wound, healing Eva. Suddenly Skylar was ripped backward, the knight’s laughter echoed through the abyss.
He stood, his hand gripping tightly onto her throat, he held her out over a ledge. “Ah, ah, ah.” He looked to Eva. “I’ll drop her.” He snickered. Skylar writhed in his grip, she kicked against him, trying to free herself, her face was red, she couldn’t breathe. Her writhing began to slow as he gripped more tightly against her. “Try as you will, it’s my job to make her forget you, Eva.” He chuckled, his glowing red eyes looking to her. “Would you rather I drop her to her death?” He looked to the now nearly limp body of Skylar.

Eva stood up slowly, holding her side as it poured with blood. She approached Skylar and smiled “I knew it” she whispered. As soon as Skylar healed her – she felt a rush of energy, she felt brand new. She let out a scream suddenly when Skylar was yanked away. Eva gripped her sword and then stepped forward.
“Go ahead” Eva spoke with a cold voice. “Drop her” she held her blade up. The Black Knight held Skylar higher and then let go – laughing as he did so. “So cruel” the knight spoke and turned. In that moment that he moved – Eva’s blade shoved deep into the Knight’s chest. She pulled it forward – cutting through his body, she drew the blade out and then moved it swiftly – slicing his head right off his body. All in the same time – Eva had teleported Skylar…
The Knight’s head plopped to the ground, and the world slowly started to fade. Eva quickly lunged forward and grabbed the head, and then scurried to Eva. In an instant they were gone. The icy world began to crumble away like ashes to the wind, until it was darkness…
***
There was a huge flash of light in the room - Eva was sent flying backwards. She cried out as she hit the wall, an object bouncing in her lap. It was the head of the Knight… “Skylar” Eva whispered as she glanced to her… Slowly Eva removed the helmet of the Knight. Underneath the cold black armor was Elias… Eva grit her teeth – this was the man who condemned her to her fathers debts… the man that started all of the grief.. that started it all. This entire adventure…
In a matter of seconds tears flowed from her eyes, she leaned her head back and fought the sobs. “It’s over” Eva muttered once she managed to stop. “It’s all… over” she whispered. The head rolled from her lap and she slowly stood to her feet. “Skylar” she whispered and ran forward – hugging her closely. “I finally found you…”

Skylar’s eyes fluttered, she could hardly hear as the conversation went back and forth between Eva and the Knight. Her vision slowly began to blur out. Then suddenly, his grip was gone from her neck. In an instant, she felt blood splatter across her face and Eva’s arm around her waist. Skylar gasped for air as she fell to her hands and knees. It’s over. Eva’s voice echoed in the world. The icy snow melted around them. The a bright light began to shine. Skylar hugged Eva and kissed her cheek. “You found me.” She whispered a small smile on her lips. “Thank you.” She hugged herself closer as the world faded into a bright blinding light.
**
In the next moment Skylar took in a sharp breath, she sat up to find herself looking to Alden. He hugged himself to her and kissed her cheek. Skylar looked around the room and then smiled when she saw Eva. “Eva.” She grinned and stood slowly, she looked to Alden and gave a nod, “She saved me.” She spoke and searched his eyes. Skylar took a step forward to the side of Eva’s bed when the world around them began to fade. “Eva?” Skylar questioned, it was as if a heavy fog filled the air. “Eva!!” Skylar called out.
“Poor little Reaper.” A deep voice spoke, a cackle was followed by this voice. “Like a lost little lamb without her Rift God.”
Skylar spun around, the voice sounded like it was all around her, she couldn’t find the source. “Who are you?” She questioned.
“Just another God.” He spoke, “My job is to destroy you.” Skylar turned then only to have her throat grasped by the man. A demon clearly, his eyes were black as the night. He had horns that came from his head and curled back. He chuckled as he stared into her eyes. “You’re not frightened?” He smirked, he held a flaming sword in his hand.
Skylar stared to him, she furrowed her brows. “You can’t kill me. That isn’t allowed.” She kneed him in the chest and then slipped from his arms and into the shadows. She sprinted through the soup thick fog.
“Ah but that is where you are wrong.” His voice came just before she saw him in front of her. It was too late by that point. Skylar felt his foot against her chest and she was knocked to her back. In the next moment he stood with his sword to her throat. He pulled the blade back as he chuckled. “You and Eva, you’re not allowed to be together, the other Gods don’t get a partner to lean on.” He scoffed. “Neither do you.” He reached forward quickly. “I will succeed.” He snarled. Suddenly Skylar was tossed to the side, she was encompassed by darkness, the world went cold, silence followed. She slammed against a wall harshly. Her vision blurred as the world around her became visible.
“Greystoke now!” A voice yelled. “Come on! Dammit!” Skylar felt a hand grab a hold of the front of her and pull her forward. Her breaths were loud as her vision began to come back. The sound of rain pitter pattering on the world around her began to fill her ears. In the next moment, the sound of a gun firing filled her ears. She realized she too held a gun in her hands. She was slammed against a wall. The man that yelled at her had his back to her as he shot down a few people running toward them. He pulled a radio from his hip. “We need back up! Now! We’re overrun!” Only static followed. “Shit! Run!” He grabbed the front of her once again and shoved her forward through an open window into the outside world. “Go! Go!” He called to her. Skylar turned and sprinted forward, she could see the lights of a city off in the distance, everything around them was as dark as the night. Lightning flashed and in the next second thunder boomed, shaking the ground beneath them. “The tunnel go!!” He screamed and shoved her. Skylar lost her balance and went tumbling into the tunnels, her back slammed harshly against a wall at the bottom. In the next moment the door slammed shut and the man pushed a steel box in front of it. The sound of slamming and clawing, screaming and groaning came from the door. “Come on.” He grabbed the front of her again. “What is going on with you, Greystoke?” He barked as he pulled her up to her feet. “This way.” He ran in front of her.
Skylar stared to him, he wore what looked like military grade clothing. He wore a chest plate, his legs had armored pieces and padding. He was covered from head to toe. Skylar couldn’t make out who he was at all. She took in quick breaths; she too was covered from head to toe. She glanced around in the tunnels, her goggles had a slight red tint to them, allowing her to see everything a lot easier. She ran behind him, turning left and right quickly, until they climbed up a ladder and slammed closed the hatch. They were met by other similarly dressed individuals. “Good to see you back, Greystoke, Windsor.” A man stepped forward he had insignias on his shoulder. “What happened out there?”
“We didn’t get the package, we were overrun, there were too many of them, we lost all radio signal.” Windsor spoke.
Skylar shut her eyes as the scene played out in her mind. They’d been sent to the hospital for supplies. It was about a mile from the city. They were just about to run inside when a horde of zombies rushed them. The undead. They were very much alive in this world. It was a virus that was spread through the saliva, if bitten…well…you had less than 48 hours until you’d become a monster.
“Greystoke?” A hand gripped her shoulder, “You alright?” It was the man whom had been with her on the outside. His voice was familiar. the soldiers began to clear the room. He pulled his helmet off and searched her eyes for a moment. Alden. “Hey.” He unclipped her helmet and brushed her cheek. “Are you okay?”
Skylar stared to him for a long moment. “Y-yeah. Sorry.” She grabbed her helmet from him. “Just a close call is all.” She went to step from the room.
“Hey.” He turned and caught up with her. “Slow down a minute, would you?” He grasped her forearm gently. “You’re alright. We’re safe.” He gave a smile. “That’s all that matters.”
“The rest of our team died.” She spoke, there were four others with them. They didn’t run fast enough, or didn’t have enough ammo. Either way, they were long gone now. She stared up to him. “That could have been me, it could have been you. We can’t just go out there like the Commander wants. Okay? We should have a plan! And those idiots out there! The ones that drew them in on us! What the fuck was that shit? Huh?”
“Skylar…” Alden spoke, he still held her arm. “We handled it. That group, it must be the resistance. They’ve been moving against us quite a bit lately. We’ve killed several of their men…there is bound to be a rebound…” He shook his head.
“Greystoke!” A voice called from down the hall. “I need you, now!”
Skylar looked to Alden for a moment before she pulled her helmet back on and took off at a jog down the hallway. “Sir?” She questioned as she came to the man in the jacket with the insignias.
“Lieutenant I need you to help with the stragglers downstairs in the morning. Scan them. If they are positive for infection you know what to do.” He handed her a device, a scanner. It pricked their neck and took a bit of their blood to test for the virus. “Turn in for then night.”
“Yes sir.” Skylar took the device. She stared to it for a moment. She avoided this task as much as possible. She hated it. She let out a sigh as she climbed the stairs to the top floor. She rounded a few corners before she punched in the code to enter her room. Skylar pushed into the room she flipped on the light and sighed heavily. She stripped off her armor and then stepped to the window. “Eva…” She whispered. She hit the frame of the window lightly. “Dammit…” She shook her head, once again…they were separated.

Eva gasped as she came to the real world. “Eva” Dr.Knightley kneeled down and placed her hand on her arm, helping her up into. Eva turned as she looked to Skylar – the world seemed to freeze in that moment. She stepped forward and instantly hit a glass wall. She pounded on the wall and shook her head, gritting her teeth as she stared in. The demon glanced to her and then smiled wide – suddenly they vanished.
Eva turned and stared to Skylar’s body. She had collapsed on the bed, knocked out. “Eva – what’s happening?” Dr.Knightley stepped forward and placed her hand on Skylar’s neck, checking for her pulse.
“My job is done” Eva whispered and knelt down to Skylar. “Our job is done” she looked to Dr. Knightley and then took in a deep breath. “Our souls are linked in every dimension, every world. We travel from each as it calls to us, to help rid the unbalanced evils” she spoke and then separated from her body. Except everyone could see it, the blue blur standing next to her real body.
Eva turned and looked to the blue hue and nodded her head. “Two spirits in one body” the blue hue spoke, she spoke. “I am returning the true Eva to her body, and moving on…” she glanced over – they could see the second spirit shoot from Skylar’s body, disappearing into nothing. In that moment Skylar woke once more – sitting up slowly. She held her hand to her head and groaned. A moment passed and her eyes looked to Eva, and the second soul.
“Thank you” Skylar whispered.
She looked upward and held her hand out – her blue fingertips reaching for the sky, for that lingering touch of magic still in the air. She disappeared in that moment… “I’m coming for you” she muttered as she shot through the dimensions. Eva appeared in her black abyss, her home. She stood in the center – and the world began to appear around her. Combined to the Nighthand mansion… Snow bustling city, the huge vampire mansion… was now a huge castle with a statue of Yevon in the center of it… Her world was expanding with each story, each dimension they tackled…
Eva teleported into the Vampire mansion and held her hand up to a painting. It was them both – a small plaque was under it… ‘Grand Elder XVI’ Eva chuckled and then shut her eyes – her fangs appeared, growing long. Eva held her hand up to her mouth and bit down on her own wrist, drinking a bit of her blood. In that instant she felt a wave of power weave through her memories. “Where are you?” she whispered.
In an instantly her vision zoned in, she could see her now. Standing in some suit of black armor, a gun in her hand. “I’m coming” she held her hand up and a portal appeared. She stepped forward and slipped through the dimensions.
“Sweety lets go!” A familiar voice called. Eva’s vision was blurry, she gripped onto something – stabilizing herself. “What the?” Eva whispered to herself, she turned swiftly and then moved. She wore a backpack on the back, a pistol was shoved into her belt, and she held a machete in her hand. “Come on” the voice called again.
“Dad” Eva whispered – footsteps stopped.
“Yeah?” he whispered back, turning around. Eva glanced to him and then nodded “Sorry – just got a little light headed”
“We need to find some food” he spoke. “Search the place” he spoke and waved his hands forward. They had just broke into a home, beginning their sweep of the house. Eva snuck into the living room and crouched by the couch. The house was rather clean, full of cobwebs and dust – but it had not been over turned by death and scavengers… she stood up and glanced around. Just as she did there was a glimpse of something moving in the next room over. Eva slowly crept to the kitchen..
A zombie stood… it snarled and clamped it’s teeth.. it had been a zombie for a long time.. and had not eaten likely since the change. Eva tapped her machete on the wall and the zombie turned – cocking it’s head to the side. With a dragging foot the zombie made it’s way to the door frame, where Eva hid on the other side. As the Zombie came closer the gurgling sounds of its snarling stance grew louder.
Eva swiftly swung the machete – hacking into the Zombie’s head. The zombie’s skull caved easily and blood splattered on the flower wall paper. Eva kicked the body down, shoving the dead body into the corner, next to the book case.
Eva slowly stood up from her crouched position and then glanced into the kitchen. Nothing… Eva approached the cabinets and opened them, searching for food. “Jackpot” Eva whispered as she opened the door to a huge collection of canned food. She grinned and began to place them on the table, sorting through them. Green Beans… Corn.. canned chicken, tuna, mushrooms, fruits, it was endless. Whoever this was… they were hoarders. She dug a little more – “Fuck yeah” she pulled 5 cans of Chili out. “Yes” she grinned and set them down.
She dug through a drawer and grinned as she pulled a sharpening wet stone out, the old school kind… She stuffed it into her bookbag and then continued looking… Kite String, Duct Tape, Tin foil, a few other goods that could be useful…
“Clear?” Andrew stepped forward and smiled.
“Yeah – just distracted.. look at this” she held her hand outward to the canned goods.
“Oh- nice. One of those bogo white bitches” he spoke and came over to the canned Chili. He chuckled and lifted the can. “Good times..”
“How do you know?” she questioned
“Even numbers, usually 4… Buy one get on free… they just can’t handle it” he laughed and then nodded. “I’m going to seal the place off.. why don’t you get started on something? Go crazy.. I’m dying for something good. I bet you the neighbors house is stocked full too” he nodded and then stepped away. He pushed the couch against the front door, covered the windows with anything he could find – either wood, a bookshelf, or tacking a blanket up. Something to hide them…
He sealed off the doors to the rooms he didn’t need, they would stay in the living room and kitchen for now..
Eva brought the cans over into the living room, sitting infront of the fireplace. She built a small fire, then after a little bit she dropped a collection of charcoal from a bag she found near the backdoor. She opened the can of chili and spooned it into the cast iron skillet. She then stood up and mixed together a bowl of pancake mix and bottled water. She poured the mix into a muffin pan and set it ontop of the coals too.
“Oh – that smells good” Andrew came back and sat down. “Chili and?” “Pan…muffin..cake..bread” she laughed and looked to him, smiling. “Shit’s probably out dated but hey” she stood up and plopped onto the couch. “So how far are we?” she questioned.
Andrew pulled out the map and traced the line with his finger. “One more day… we will camp here, and head out in the morning. Hopefully this place is legit…”
“Not like the last one..” Eva grew silent.. after a moment she stood and pulled the cast iron from the fire. She prepared the dinner, pulled the bread out and prepared two plates. She ripped at the ball of bread, setting it onto his plate. She ripped off chunks of her bread and dipped it into the chili, eating in silence. It was too soon… to bring up the last “civilization”…

The night passed, Skylar slept peacefully in her bed. In the early hours of the morning she climbed from her bed and pulled on her gear. Skylar looked to herself in the mirror for a long moment before she pulled on her helmet and headed out. She climbed down the several flights of stairs and was stopped at the bottom. “Good morning, Lieutenant.” The man with the insignia spoke, he looked to her for a long moment. “The commander is rather displeased with your performance last night. You’ve never lost a soul.”
“That mission was bullshit, and you know it.” Skylar shot back.
“You’re better than that, Greystoke.” He chuckled, “At least, you’re still here.” He pat her shoulder. “Grab some breakfast before you take care of the stragglers.” He spoke.
“Yes sir.” Skylar gave a nod before she headed down the hallway, she pulled her helmet and hooked it to her belt as she came into the mess hall. She grabbed a tray and headed down the line with the other soldiers. The stuff they served up looked like mush, but it was food. It was whatever they could manage to find. Skylar sat down at a table and scooped the food into her mouth.
“Good morning.” Alden sat down next to her and gave a smile. “What is your assignment today?” He questioned.
“Stragglers.” Skylar took another bite, she glared at him. The Commander knew she hated the task, she knew he must be punishing her.
“Your favorite.” Alden spoke, “I’m on the gates today.”
“Yeah…” Skylar finished her last bite, “Have fun, Alden.” She stood then and set her plate in the stack of plates near the door on her way out. She pulled her helmet on before she headed outside. Skylar pulled her rifle around in front of her, she gripped the hilt as she looked to the civilians whom walked the streets. There were laws here. No one outside between the hours of 6pm-6am. No excuses. Once the sunset, everyone was to be inside until it rose the next morning. Skylar had been in the military at the start of all of this. She’d help set up the huge thick steel gates and walls around the perimeter of the city. She’d been there when the airplanes bombed the outer city after everyone was brought inside of the safe zone. The huge tall buildings leaned inward on each other, some had collapsed. It had been 10 years since the outbreak. 10 long years. A group of resistance fighters had begun only a year into the outbreak. They called themselves New Hope. They fought against the laws that the military set forth, the laws that kept Ashtown safe. People came here in search of safety, in search of a future. This city was a safe haven, the only one in miles. The military had been sent here early on, the barricades were put up. Huge storage containers blocked the infected out. Doctors were sent in. Generators, food, supplies. This was one of the most well stocked cities heard of to date. Though, with all of this security, there had to be laws. New Hope was set to break the military. They didn’t like how the military rationed food. They didn’t like the curfew that kept them safe. With anything good, there always seemed to be a darkness that pushed back.
Skylar stepped up to a soldier. “The stragglers?” She questioned.
He looked to her and gave a nod, “Of course.” He gripped his radio, “Send them out, Lieutenant Greystoke is here.” He waited for the response and nodded.
A group of civilians walked through the streets a few paused as the stragglers were brought out. These people were found in condemned buildings, or outside of the perimeter, or even outside after curfew. Skylar watched as the six people were marched out, the soldiers pushed them down onto their knees. Their hands were bound behind their backs. Skylar stepped up to the first one. She placed her hand on his shoulder, “Tilt your head.” She spoke. He tilted his head to the side. She placed the device against his neck and pulled the trigger. It processed his blood for a moment and then chimed. She stepped to the next and then another. She came to the forth one, a woman.
“Mom!!” A little kid called, he ran forward and was caught by a soldier. “Mom!!! Let her go!!” He cried.
Skylar paused a moment, she took in a breath as she scanned the woman. She stared at the device, time seemed to slow, then it made the sound that she never wanted to here. It was a buzz that sounded like that of a card getting declined. The woman began to sob, she knew what was to come. “Please…please no…please check it again…” She whimpered.
The boy fought against the soldier, screaming now. Civilians stopped and stared. Skylar took in a shaken breath as she stared to the woman. “I’m sorry…” She whispered as she pushed her forward. The woman lay flat on her chest on the ground now. “I’m sorry…” She spoke again as she pulled her pistol and held it to the woman’s head. In that next moment Skylar pulled the trigger, time seemed to stop. The little boy broke the hold of the soldier and rushed forward. He’d pulled a knife from his belt and sprinted toward Skylar. The sound of an assault rifle filled the air as the boy was shot down by one of the other soldiers. Skylar stayed where she was, one knee pressed into the ground. She stared to the boy as he collapsed forward onto the ground, only a foot from her.
“Murderers!!!” A man in the crowd screamed.
“They killed a child!!” Another yelled.
Skylar stood and stepped to the next person in the line, she scanned him, clean. She stepped to the final man as the soldiers pushed people along. Skylar reached forward just as the man pushed up and took off in a sprint. The soldier next to her rose his gun and fired three precise shots, two to the body and one to the head. The body dropped. Skylar took in a breath she holstered her pistol and then looked to the son and mother on the ground for a long moment. She gripped her radio, she brought it to her lips. “We need a few more for backup in zone 6. As well as three bags.” She clicked the radio back onto her belt.
“Murderer!” Someone yelled.
Skylar turned and stepped up to him. She stared to him and lifted her goggles, she lowered her face mask, “We are protecting you.” She spoke, her voice short. “I do not enjoy this. I am following orders.”
He stared to her, his eyes wide. “You…you shot a boy...a child…”
“He drew a weapon, he meant to harm. Sir, we are here for your protection. We get your food for you. I suggest you move along.” She spoke as she pulled her goggles back into place and her mask back up. Skylar then turned and headed into the city.
“Greystoke.” Her radio chattered.
“Greystoke, go.” She held up her radio.
“Intake, gate 7.”
“Affirm.” She spoke and then took off in a jog. She ran across the city, zig zagging through the small town, until she made it to the gate. She slowed as she approached the tent where they screened outsiders during intake. “Sir?” She stepped up to the Commander.
“Ah Greystoke.” The Commander smiled. “Perfect timing. I know last night was beyond your control, don’t beat yourself up about it, alright? We’re going to send out a troop tomorrow and take out a location where New Hope has been spotted. We’re going to send them a message.” He nodded, “I want you to take point.”
“Yes sir.” Skylar nodded.
“Until then, help the doctors here check in the outsiders.” He then stepped off.
Skylar took in a breath as she moved to her station. She looked to the soldier whom sat at the desk. She then looked to the others. Dr. Knightley stood over an outsider, checking vitals, running tests. Tyrin was there as well. Skylar smiled beneath her mask. Eva had to be in the city somewhere…just where? And was it her?

Eva woke the next morning to quiet home. It had been a long time since they had no woken in jarred motions – clawing on the doors or snarling of the dead beasts. She had fallen asleep on the couch – her legs swung upward on the top of the back. Andrew sat in the lazy boy – the leg rest extended outward and fully leaned back. She wiped away a bit of drool and sat up, glancing to the fireplace. She dug around in the kitchen and found several packs of oatmeal…
Andrew woke up not much longer after she did – stretching as well. “Slept like a baby” he spoke as he came into the kitchen. He smiled as Eva handed her a bowl of oatmeal. “Thanks” he held the bowl up and grabbed a spoon.
“I like it here” Eva spoke as she came to the couch. “This is the first morning of peace and quiet that we have had in…god knows how long” she smiled and sat down, spooning at her oatmeal. “Do we really have to go?” she spoke – glancing up.
Andrew sighed and leaned back, thinking for a moment. “Who knows… today might be great, tomorrow might be even better. But you saw that wave of zombies that took out Pinesville… we need walls, we need people – protection” he spoke and finished his bowl.
“What will we do if its corrupt?” she whispered, remembering back to the last ‘salvation camp’ they had came upon.
Andrew let out a sigh “What if they’re not? We wont know.. and if they are – we escape. We fight back” he smiled and stood up. “If we were meant to die from this shit – we’d be dead by now. We’ve got this” he spoke and took his bowl to the kitchen. “Pack up – lets get ready”
Before she knew it they were standing outside once more. Andrew wrote on the white door “A safe place”. They had left some of the food, supplies, for the next person maybe. Then they were on their way. They stepped to the driveway and stood before the jeep that they had done up. It was a lifted jeep with huge tires. On the front of the bumper was a plow. Attached to the sides were weapons of all sorts. Crow bars, bats with nails, a few guns. It was the perfect Zombie Destroyer. The entire thing was covered in crusty old blood – blood of the zombies.
Eva climbed into the passenger seat and stood up as they started off. She held binoculars – looking out to the distance. “Just a small patch on the road” she pointed forward. The jeep sped up even faster as they came closer. Eva pulled the crow bar off the pillar and held it in her hand. She dipped her hand out the window – the wind fighting against her. The crow bar slammed into a zombie – a splash of blood flew on the side of the door. They smacked three more, who were thrown to the sides of the streets, their skulls completely smashed. Eva leaned back in the car and relaxed. She pressed play on the CD player and grinned. “Hello – my name is human!” she sang out loud and laughed.
It was around noon that they came close. “I think that’s it” she pointed. There was walls erected, in a large circle around the city… they continued to drive for a little longer when they finally came to the entrance. The jeep stopped at the huge double doors and Eva poked her head out of the jeep. “Do we knock … or?”

Two soldiers looked down upon them from the top of the wall, their guns held up one aimed on Andrew, another on Eva. “Cut the engine.” One of the men ordered. “Drop your weapons and get out of the vehicle.” Suddenly the gates opened and a group of six soldiers rushed out to Eva and Andrew. They moved swiftly, acting before Andrew or Eva could even make a move. They were brought inside, their jeep was pulled in behind them. “Lieutenant!” One of the soldiers called.
Skylar was sitting at a desk in the corner of the tent that was set up. She looked up from a book that she held in her hands. She stood and stepped over to the newcomers. “Welcome to Ashtown.” She caught a glimpse of Eva, her jaw dropped slightly, her breath caught in her chest. She looked to the jeep they were in. “It looks like you’ve been on the road a long time, huh?” She looked over to Andrew and then to Eva. Her eyes looking through the red tint of her goggles. “Don’t worry, the time to run is over, you can be safe here. If you so choose.” She gave a nod. “Come.” She motioned. The soldiers gave a nudge forward on the two. “You’ll receive your weapons back once we’ve checked you in.” She stepped up to Dr. Knightley and gave a nod. “Have a look Dr. Knightley.”
Dr. Knightley smiled to the two. “Welcome.” She spoke as she pulled the device from the table. “This is just a pinch.” She grabbed Andrews wrist and placed the device on his forearm, it took a bit of his blood. Dr. Knightley placed a bandage over the small pin prick as she waited for the machine to process his blood. “Ah there we are, clear.” She gave a warm smile. “Now for you dear.” She took Eva’s wrist and pressed the device against her arm for it to do its handy work. “The military developed this, not too terribly long after the outbreak. It can read the virus, if you were to be infected, it would let us know, before the turn.” She placed a bandage. The device beeped happily. “But not to worry.” She gave a nod, “You’re as healthy as can be.” She chuckled. “They are all yours, Lieutenant.” Dr. Knightley gave a nod.
Skylar stared to the device, what if it had said Eva was infected? What would she have done? She couldn’t. She shook her head slightly. “Very well, come on.” She spoke and led them to the edge of the tent where she sat down at her desk. She pushed forms across the desk to them, “Fill these out, it will place you into a home, it will gain you access to ration cards.” She set a pen before them. She then looked to one of the soldiers. “Get them some lunch, would you?”
“Yes Lieutenant.” He nodded and went to the far end of the tent, where others that had just come into the city sat, munching on plates of food.
Skylar looked back forward to the two. “So, here’s how this works. Your information will be put in the database for the city. We have plenty of homes to offer, you will be assigned one. A job will be assigned to each of you, be it tending to the farm, or other duties, there are plenty of jobs to go around. Watch is conducted by the soldiers you see around you. We have kept this city safe for 10 years and we don’t plan on allowing anything to go astray.” Skylar paused for a moment. “With that being said, we do have laws, the laws are for your protection. Abide by them. There are only a few. We have a curfew of 6pm, you may not leave your home until sun up which is generally around 6am. We will come over the speakers and announce curfew each night. Do not venture into condemned buildings, we have not cleared them, they are not safe, you could lose your life. No hero business.” Skylar paused as she looked to the paper she’d handed Eva, she looked to her name on the paper. “If you break the rules set forth, you are subject to prosecution. Now, if you are to become infected when you have been intersected by a soldier it will be found out. Unfortunately our doctors have not found a cure, if that device reads that you are infected, we must kill you.” Skylar leaned back in her chair, thinking of the child and her mother. It pained her to think of all of the people she’d killed over the years. “Lucky for you, if you stay within the walls, you’re safe. We will protect you.” She gave a nod.
“Lieutenant.” The soldier set the plates down in front of them. As well as a plate for Skylar. Chicken, beans, potatoes. The farm was doing rather well.
“Thank you Officer. Carry on.” She nodded. Skylar then looked to the two for a moment. “Go ahead, I’m sure you’re hungry.” She stood and went to their jeep. She brought Eva and Andrew their weapons that the soldiers had stripped from them and set them on the desk before them. “Your jeep is yours to come and go with as you please. However, it will be parked in the impound lot.” She pulled a map of the city out. “This is where we are, Gate 7.” She pointed. “This is the impound lot, it is in sector 8.” She pointed, it was on the edge of the city. “I’ll show you where to park it once you’ve settled in. Then we can go to your assigned housing.” She gave a nod and slipped off her helmet. Skylar set it on the table next to her. She looked to Eva for a moment before she began to eat her food. “How long have you been on the road?” She questioned. "Eva, is it?" She then gave a smile, "And...Andrew." She gave a nod, "My name is Lieutenant Greystoke." She took another bite of food.

Eva stepped from the jeep and set the crow bar down.. she moved the handgun from her thigh and set it down as well. Eva held her hands up as a group of men moved toward them. They pat her down as she stood here, searching for any other weapons. Eva turned her head to the side and watched as they climbed into their jeep. “Right this way” one of the soldiers spoke and led them inside the gates. The giant gates closed behind her, two men moving the ropes to the sides. Eva’s eyes looked over the wall… men were stationed every 10 feet it seemed, binoculars about their necks.. sniper rifles in their hands. Likely they saw them coming way before they arrived…
They pushed through the flaps of a large tent, and Eva’s eyes glanced back. They stood before a woman before her. She raised an eyebrow to this person in all riot gear, why she felt the need to have it on constantly. Eva turned her head as Dr. Knightley approached, some device in her hands. She flinched when it poked into her wrist, and then it beeped. Eva glanced over to the screen ‘clear’
Eva brought her arm back and followed the Lieutenant to the desk. She sat down and pulled one of the forms to her. She listened to her speak – the rules, and everything. She had heard it 3 other times, the story was almost the same from them too. We will protect you. Eva watched then as she took her helmet off, it was all too soon that she felt a surge of energy in her body. She jumped forward and grabbed Skylar by the throat and stared into her eyes. “We never said our names” she spoke through her teeth.
“Eva!” Andrew scrambled up and pulled her back, shoving her back into the seat. Andrew placed his hand on her shoulder, holding her back. Eva struggled in her seat “Who the hell are you?” Eva grit her teeth. “You – do I know you?” she shook and fought against Andrew. Andrew turned his head and took in a deep breath. In one swift motion he slammed his arm against her head – knocking Eva right out. Eva slumped in the chair – still breathing – in that moment.
Andrew slowly sat back in his chair and he let out a deep breath. “I deeply apologize for my daughter’s action… she is a good gal, her head just isn’t on straight. She has witnessed more than I’d ever want for her… I’m.. I’m sorry. We can go – if you need” she spoke and looked up to Skylar in that moment.
“But I would like to know – how do you know our names? Did that device tell you or something?” he was submissive, he could tell the group – so far – meant no harm. It was to soon to be jumping in their faces… Andrew glanced over to Eva. Dr. Knightley was already by her side – checking her vitals.
“She’s fine..” Dr.Knightley spoke and then splashed a bit of water on Eva’s face. Eva’s eyes fluttered and she brought her hand to her head.
“W- what happened?” Eva muttered. “Where are we? Dad?” she turned her head and then saw Andrew. She let out a deep sigh and then glanced forward to Skylar. “Do I know you?”
“Her mind – it picks and chooses. A doctor at the last refuge says it was from a traumatic event, scrambled her… In a normal world I'd take her to therapy, get her some meds... coping is hard. If I had let her continue - she might have made a not - well thought out mistake. You would have done what you had to do.. so forgive me for doing what I had to do first...”
“I’m right here Dad.. jesus” Eva muttered and gripped her forehead. “My head hurts” she whispered.

The moment happened quickly. Skylar’s hand pulled her pistol from her hip, an instinctual reaction. Her brows pulled together as she gripped Eva’s wrist with her other hand, she pressed the pistol against Eva’s temple just as Andrew pulled her back.
Instantly there were three of the soldiers with their guns aimed on Andrew and Eva. Skylar pursed her lips, her eyes were cold. Her pulse pounded in her ears as she stared to Eva, she watched as Andrew knocked her clean out with one swift hit to her head. As Andrew apologized Skylar loosened, she lowered her gun and clicked it back into her holster. She gave a nod to her men whom lowered their guns. She stared to Dr. Knightley as she tended to Eva. Skylar’s eyes stared back to Andrew then void of emotion. She reached up and rubbed her neck slightly, bruises had already begun to form. Skylar let out a soft chuckle when he asked how she knew their names. She reached into her pocket just beneath her pistol and pulled out a wallet and a card. “Glove box.” She spoke, “Your IDs, it wasn’t too hard to figure out.” She looked to Eva as she began to come back to. This isn’t my Eva….or is she? Skylar watched her, curious, “Maybe in another lifetime.” She hooked her helmet to her belt on her waist before she rubbed her neck again. She looked to Andrew as he spoke of her….condition.
Skylar took in a breath and let it out slowly. She then looked to Eva, her eyes focused, “Listen carefully. You could have just gotten yourself as well as your father killed.” She spoke, her eyes never left Eva. “Pull a stunt like that again, I can guarantee that you will lose your life. It will not be my decision.” She paused for a long moment, “I can’t protect you, if you put an officer in danger. Myself? I can handle it, I understand. Another officer?” She took in a deep breath and shook her head, thinking of the child once again. “You’d have a bullet in your brain.” Skylar then glanced to Andrew, “How about you two fill out your forms then? If you’re staying I need you to cooperate with us. I know living under military command isn’t always the most comfortable at first, but I guarantee you, you’ll sleep like a lamb.” She gave a gentle smile. “So, if you’re staying, fill the forms out.” She looked to Eva for a moment, “You have five minutes.” She set the wallet and IDs down on the table, “To answer your original question.” She slid Eva’s ID to her. “Before you jump to conclusions, you should always think of alternative possibilities. It would do you good. We aren’t here to hurt you.” Skylar then stepped away.
A soldier stood not far from the two, his finger hovered over the trigger of his gun. He was ready if Andrew or Eva tried anything else. “Do you really think they should be trusted?” An officer walked up to Skylar. “After that stunt?” Skylar was led over to a chair by Dr. Knightley. She sat down in the chair and leaned her head back, she winced as Dr. Knightley felt around the bruises. The officer crossed his arms, “Lieutenant Greystoke?” He questioned.
Dr. Knightley looked to him, “Give me space would you, Sergeant?” She stepped in front of him as she felt around. “She has a death grip….you’re lucky, Lieutenant.”
“I’m fine.” Skylar spoke and then winced. She looked to the Sergeant then, “Sergeant, I am your commanding officer, am I not?”
“Yes.” He responded, he looked to her through his tinted goggles.
“The girl shouldn’t be a threat anymore. If she is, I will take the blame for it.” Skylar sat up she rubbed her neck again and grimaced. The soldiers on top of the gate aimed in on a few targets and took them out, their guns silenced. The soldier upon the top of the gate a few moments later began giving orders, just as he’d given Andrew and Eva orders to drop their weapons. She turned her eyes as the gate opened and another new comer stepped inside. Skylar stood and walked over to the soldiers that stood around the new comer. She pushed her way through. “Welcome to Ashtown.” She gave a smile and looked to the woman before she gave a nod. “Are you alone?” She asked.
“I…I lost…I…” The woman was breathless, she’d run to the gates from the city a few zombies had followed her.
“It’s okay.” Skylar gave a nod, she took in a breath and glanced over to her desk to Eva and Andrew. “You’re safe now, you don’t need to run anymore, alright?” She led the new comer over to Dr. Knightley and sat her down in a chair. Blood was splattered across the woman’s face and soaked into her clothing. She was sobbing by this point.
Dr. Knightley furrowed her brows as she held the device. She pushed up the long sleeve shirt that the woman wore and paused. “Lieutenant…” She spoke, a deep gash was in the woman’s arm. A bite mark possibly.
Skylar looked to the wound, it was curved, more likely than not it was a bite. She looked to the woman and took in a deep breath, “Check her, Knightley.” She spoke, her pulse rose.
Dr. Knightley bit her lower lip, “Of course.” She gave a nod as she pushed up the woman’s other sleeve. The woman was whimpering now, she knew. Dr. Knightley pushed the device against the woman’s skin and pulled it back. She took in a slow breath and looked to the LCD screen as they waited. It buzzed and the screen turned red. “Lieutenant…” Dr. Knightley looked to the woman.
“You were bitten…” Skylar spoke as she looked to the woman, whom began to sob harder now. Skylar looked into her eyes, a sense of sadness washed over her face.
A soldier stepped forward and grabbed the woman, having her stand up. “Lieutenant?” He questioned.
Skylar stared to the woman, “I’m sorry…” She whispered softly as the soldier zipper her wrists together. Skylar reached to her belt and pulled her helmet onto her face, she pulled up her facemask and took the woman by her elbow. She walked the woman from the tent into another tent that was just a few feet from it.
“Please…please…” The woman began to plea, “Please don’t…I…I…my son…he…he’s out there…please!” She whimpered.
Skylar paused and looked to the woman. “How do you know he’s not dead?” She asked, her voice soft.
“No..he’s safe…please! I was bitten getting him to safety…he’s in the city…please you have to save him…please.” She looked to Skylar.
Skylar bit her lip she looked away from the woman. “I can’t promise you that.”
The woman whimpered for a moment, “Please…you…you must try…please…just try…promise me you’ll do it if you can…”
Skylar took in a slow breath, she was silent for a long moment, the room grew stale. She then gave a slow nod. “Okay.” She spoke as she unclipped her pistol from her belt. “I will try.” She looked back to the woman. “I’m sorry.” She brought the pistol up in a swift motion. Her finger pulled over the trigger and in the next moment the sound of the gunshot echoed through the camp. The woman’s body fell to the ground and blood poured from her body. “I’m…sorry…” Skylar whispered.
“You, alright Lieutenant?” A voice asked.
Skylar turned her eyes to see Alden. She sniffled slightly and took in a few quick breaths. “Y-yeah. I’m good. Clean this up, would you, corporal?” She stepped passed him as she clipped her pistol into her holster once more. She stepped back into the original tent and walked over to Eva and Andrew. She was silent for a long moment as she looked to the forms. She gave a nod, “Follow me.” Her voice was slightly shaky still, she didn’t like to kill. She didn’t mind the zombies, but…to kill someone who was not turned? To kill a person. It ruined her. She led them outside to their jeep. “I will lead you to the impound lot.” She nodded as she turned and climbed onto a jet-black motorcycle. She started it up and took off into the city. Skylar rode through the city, looking to the civilians. They looked to her and stepped from her path as she rode along. Soldiers were everywhere in the streets, posted at their watch points.
Eventually they came to an old parking garage. Skylar wound up the garage to the 2ed floor where she had her own space for her motorcycle. She slipped it into its spot and pointed to a space that was just a few from hers. Skylar waited for a moment before she stepped through the garage. “Ration cards are given out once a month.” She spoke as she stepped inside, she removed her helmet and clipped it to her waist once more. Her assault rifle swung back and forth on her back with her quick movement. She led them into a building that was once a hospital. She stepped up to a woman at the counter and gave a nod. “Two.” She spoke. The woman grabbed two packs that were stuffed full of supplies. She then turned and handed the supplies to Andrew and Eva. “Come on then.” She continued onward. Skylar led them through the city. “Sector 6, it’ll be the best for you.” She spoke, “Sector 6 is where the officers are housed, but…” She paused and looked to Andrew for a moment. “In your case, I’ll make an exception. You’ll be more comfortable this way, have better access to things you may need.” She walked through the streets. The sun was beginning to set.
“One hour until curfew. As a reminder, no one is to be on the streets without proper permit. Those caught on the streets will be punished accordingly.” A voice spoke over the intercoms that were spaced along the streets.
“Here we go.” Skylar stepped into a building. It was one of the better kept buildings. She climbed the stairs up several flights, 12 to be exact. Once she was at the top she walked down the hall to the last room on the right. A key sat in the door. She turned it and pushed the door open. She stepped inside of the small apartment. It had two small bedrooms, a small kitchen and living area. “It isn’t much, but you’ll grow to love it. We don’t need much these days.” Skylar spoke. She stared to Eva then, a long hard moment. “You are my responsibility now, Eva. I have let you stay. Please, do not break the rules.” Her voice was soft, calm, caring. “If you do, it is my head on a chopping block, alright?” She then handed the key set to Andrew. “That being said.” She paused a moment. “I am just across the hall. Room 1202.” Skylar looked to Andrew a moment. “If you need anything further, don’t hesitate to ask. Show up to chow in the morning, I will give you orders and the Brigadier General will give you your assignments. We also have a doctor available, to speak to, a lot of people have been through things that they wish they hadn’t. A lot of people have nightmares. We have a doctor to help.” Skylar gave a nod. “I’ll let you settle in.” She gave a nod and stepped from the room. Skylar unlocked her door, right across the hall and stepped into her room. She stripped herself of her riot gear immediately and dressed herself in black pajama bottoms and a blue tank top. Skylar sat down on her couch and let out a heavy sigh.
