Suddenly with a blink of her eye - Eva stood in what was now her room. She looked around.. the home had been stripped down. Just a couch sitting in front of a TV.. a kitchen off to the corner, some kind of breakfast bar. She slowly stepped into the bedroom. It was a queen sized bed sitting in the middle of the room, a dresser against the wall. Emptiness. She brought her hands to each of her arms and rubbed them slightly. It was then that there was a sudden noise – some kind of grinding. The air conditioning turned on. Eva glanced around a moment before feeling the cool air touch her skin. Instantly her hairs on her arms jumped upward, standing on their ends.
“Eva?” Andrew stepped into the room. “Hey – sweety, it’s okay. We’re safe now” he placed both hands on her shoulders and guided her to the couch. “No more running, this is it”
“You can’t say that” Eva whispered and moved his hands away. “You don’t know these people, you don’t know anything. Quit putting this false hope in my head – that’s what – that’s what got mom killed!” Eva threw her hands out and walked out of the room.
Andrew watched her leave – his mouth agape. He took in a deep breath and then followed her into the dining room. “Eva-“
“I don’t even know how to settle anymore” she whispered. “We’ve been on the move for so long, I’m not even sure what entertains me aside from shoving an axe down a zombie’s throat.” She stepped forward and then glared to him for a long moment and then stormed to her room. “I’m going to bed” she spoke and then slammed her body onto the bed.
It was a few hours later that she rose – she grabbed a bag and slipped out of the bedroom window. She glanced upwards – a fire escape ladder was only a few feet above her. She glanced around and then jumped upward. Her fingers caught the ladder and she began to climb upward. The sun was well set by now. She could see a few camp fires were lit about the border of the city…
She climbed to the roof and sat down on the ledge of the building. She pulled her bag off her shoulder and set it down. Sticking out of the bag was a large gun.. she pulled the gun out of the bag and held it in her hands. It was a sniper rifle. On the end was a muzzle, silencer. She pulled the rifle up to her eye and glanced around for a moment… the scope was a night vision scope. They had stole it off of some guy who raided an army base…
She counted the wall exits.. counted the people. The scope of her sniper looked over the campfires. Her scope then scooted over to a group of men who stood outside of the walls. A patrol unit. They were being pinned against the wall with over 10 zombies coming their way. The 2 guys attacked the on coming zombies… one got his machete stuck in a zombie’s head.
Eva grit her teeth and then brought her focus in… she hovered her gaze over a zombie and pulled the trigger. The zombie’s head practically exploded by the giant bullet, though it made hardly a sound. She then took out 4 more zombies… The two men fought off the remaining Zombies and then glanced around – trying to figure out where the shots came from…
Eva was high in the sky, sitting ontop of their apartment building…. She lowered the gun and then released a deep breath…

“You’re a pretty good shot.” A voice came from the shadows. “I uh…I don’t think I could have done that. I’m not very good…um…” From the shadows stepped a female figure. “You’re new, I saw you come in with the Lieutenant…” She held her hands up, she was harmless. She stepped out of the shroud of shadows then, “My name is Ayla….um…Skylar saved me…” She gave a nod. Ayla wore old tattered jeans and an old grey sweater that was hooded. She moved and sat down, with her feet hanging over the edge of the building. She was silent for a long moment before she turned and looked to Eva, she fumbled with her hands. “When Skylar found me, I was a good 15 miles out from the city, pinned down. I’d locked myself into a room and I thought I was going to just die there. She drew the biters away, and she took them all down. She was alone, out looking for survivors…Skylar does that, she looks for people…she’s….she’s a good one…” She looked to Eva once more. “The others…” She shook her head. “They just…” She clenched her jaw slightly. “Just be careful…okay?” Ayla looked to Eva, she kicked her feet slightly and looked down toward the ground. “Sky gave me the key to get up here…you know…” She pulled a key from her pocket of her sweater. She dangled it, the silver gleamed in the dim moonlight for a moment before she tucked it away once more. “What’s your name?” She asked softly as she brought her eyes to Eva once again.
**
A loud knocking came from Skylar’s door. Skylar sleepily stumbled to her feet and rushed to the door. She opened it and found herself staring into the eyes of one of the Commander. He looked to her and crossed his arms. “Rise and shine buttercup.” He spoke, “Get dressed.”
“Commander?” Skylar asked, she rubbed some sleep from her eyes. She’d only been asleep an hour, maybe two at tops.
“It’s time to move.” He spoke, “Now gear up, you’re heading out in 10.” His voice was demanding.
“To what? What is so pressing at this hour? Commander?” Skylar looked to him.
The Commander took in a slow breath as he stared down to her. “You will be ready in 10, Lieutenant. That’s an order.” His voice was filled with anger it seemed. Skylar hadn’t talked back to him so much, but the missions. He was sending her on suicide missions, again and again, and the other officers, they didn’t have to go. Just her.
Skylar took in a slow breath, “Yes, sir.” She gave a nod. “Of course.” She then turned and slipped into her apartment. Within minutes she was downstairs in her full riot gear, her assault rifle thrown over her shoulder. Skylar watched as a few other sleepy recruits stumbled into the room, the new recruits. What was he doing?
“This is an easy, in and out, mission. I have a target.” He slapped a polaroid onto the white board of a man. “Kill him, I will accept no less.”
“Who is this target?” Skylar spoke up as she looked around the room.
“Their leader. It’ll put an end to this little charade.” The Commander looked to her and chuckled. “Unless you can’t do it, Greystoke.” He got into her face in this moment. “Unless you’re not the officer I once believed you to be.” His breath was hot against her skin.
Skylar slipped away from him and grabbed the polaroid. “Where do we find them?” She questioned.
“Markus here has the coordinates. He’ll take you.” He patted a recruit on the shoulder.
Skylar gave a sigh as she stared at the picture, it was blurry, hard to make out. Within minutes the group was loaded into a military Humvee. Skylar sat on the top of it, she stared at the image in her hands through the red tint of her goggles. They stopped at a gate and waited for it to open. Then, off into the night they rode. Skylar yawned, she wasn’t rested enough for this. This was a suicide mission. But why? Why did he keep risking her? Why not the others? She was beginning to feel uneasy with the Commander. In the past several months things had started to shift. The people in the city called the soldiers murderers. She didn’t understand. The hate and the hostility that they’d seen a spike in. Skylar hadn’t changed anything. She was careful, she made sure they understood that the only people killed were infected. But yet they were called scum, liars, murderers. It was becoming worse with the resistance group New Hope.
Skylar was silent as they drove along. She looked to the zombies that wandered in the world, growling and moaning to the sounds that the Humvee made. It was a long trip, to the middle of what used to be the great city. Then suddenly the vehicle stopped. Skylar looked around. “What’s going on?” She asked. “Hey?” She climbed down from the top with a few of the recruits at her back. She slipped around to the front and the sound of guns cocking filled her ears.
“Put them down and we will let you live.” The voice was familiar.
Skylar moved her eyes, her finger over the trigger. The lights of the Humvee lit up a group of people that stood before her. She looked then to the eyes of the man that spoke. Mavis. “Father?” Her rifle fell slack in her grip.
“Sky?” He questioned, his men still aimed at the soldiers. He shook his head. “Drop your weapons, no one gets hurt.”
Skylar swallowed she gave a nod. “You heard him boys. Drop ‘em.” She dropped her pistol, her knife, and then she went to set her rifle down. One of the resistance fighters rushed forward and slammed her into the ground harshly, mud splattered across her goggles.
“Stop it! They cooperated!” Mavis’ growled as he moved and shoved the man off of her back. Gun fire broke out in that moment.
Skylar looked with trembling breaths as she watched one of her soldiers try to fight back, his pistol shot off and in the next moment he fell to the ground a bullet through his cheek. Skylar gasped as the foot of one of the resistance fighters was pressed into her back. Three more of her recruits tried to fight back as she lay there, fighting to breathe. “St-stop…” She pleaded. Only two of her men were left.
“Grab them, we gotta move.” A man called. Skylar’s wrists were zip tied tightly, she could feel it cutting into her flesh. She was lifted roughly, her guns collected and they were off. They were shoved through alleys and streets until they pushed into a large building. They climbed up stairs, up and up until finally they made it to the top floor. Skylar was shoved harshly forward she slammed into the ground and everything faded to black…

Eva turned her head suddenly when she heard the foot steps. She lowered the gun and watched her as Ayla moved to the side of the building. Eva was quiet for a long moment, listening to this girl ramble, whoever she was. Her eyes glanced to the key, and then back down. “Eva” she muttered and then brought the gun back up – staring into the scope. “Careful?” she spoke as she glanced around. “Careful of everyone else? What’s the big picture?” she spoke and then lowered the gun. “Every city we’ve come across has a problem, there’s no such thing as civilization any more…”
She brought her gun up as she heard the sound of car starting. Her scope moved down and then to the car that approached the wall. “That girl” her scope hovered over Skylar in the passenger seat. “Skylar” she watched the car leave the city, bounding down the hallway. “Do they normally take outside trips at midnight?” she lowered the gun and glanced to Ayla.
“Curious…” she spoke and then stood up. She approached the door that led downward and then nodded. “I guess I ought to sleep… huh..” she spoke and then leaned the gun against her shoulder. “Hopefully I see you around, I guess” she shrugged and then waited for Ayla to unlock the door. They walked down the stairwell, when suddenly Eva threw her arm out – stopping Ayla. “shh” she whispered.
Two men walked passed the stairwell door, their shadows could be seen through the stained glass in the door. When they walked away Eva slowly led her forward, until they came to their floor. “What room are you in?” Eva questioned.
“1222” she spoke. Eva nodded and opened the door, leading Ayla into the hallways. She glanced around and then slowly crept forward. Eva led her to room 1222 and then nodded. “One question before you go… what were you doing up there?”
Soon enough Ayla slipped into her room, Eva made her way to their apartment. 1205. She stepped inside and leaned the sniper against the wall. “Where you been?” Andrew spoke, his arms crossed.
“Just a breath of fresh air… I scoped out the area… just looking..” Eva crossed her arms as well, and stared to him.
Andrew sighed and nodded. “I heard something across the room. Some men came in for Skylar – they practically forced her to get up, get ready – orders” he sighed. “She hadn’t even slept long at all… makes me worried”
“About what kind of hell hole we’re in? A military style civilization… who knows what kind of power they think they can get away with…” Eva grit her teeth and then let out a sigh. “I’m going to bed… see you in the morning”
**
When morning came there was military style trumpets, calling the sign for the morning. Eva sat up and grit her teeth. “What the fuck” she spoke and then threw her blankets off. She pulled her tank top on, a pair of pants and a plaid button up shirt. She pulled her belt on, her gun on her thigh.. a knife on her waist. She stepped into the living room and sighed as Andrew entered as well. “Not exactly the best wakening…”
Andrew sighed and led her out of the apartment. In minutes they climbed into their jeep and drove towards the mess hall. He parked and they stood in line seconds later… She held a tray in her hand – looking over the people that seem to flood in. “I wonder how many people live here…” Eva whispered and held her plate out. A splat of watery eggs landed on her plate, then two sausage links. “I wonder if she came back last night…” Eva muttered and then continued down the line for biscuits, and then a glass of orange juice…
Eva made her way to a seat and poked at her food. It wasn’t half bad, it was better than canned greens and twinkies for breakfast… she finished her food and crossed her arms. “Our new members, please follow me” a woman stood at the door.. Eva stood and nodded, the other person followed as well. Andrew tossed his plate on the stack of dirty plates and followed as well.
“Everyone receives a job here, everyone plays a part in this city… we will analyze your strengths, and fit you to where we need you most. After a while we can discuss changing jobs if you want.. so first, I would like you to fill out this survey” she handed them a piece of paper, and a pen. It was a series of questions with the options as : strongly disagree, disagree, neutral, agree, strongly agree…
Eva sighed and filled out the answers… then there was a few fill in the blanks.. what you did prior, what you enjoy, these sorts of things.. Eva turned her paper in once she was done..
“Alright.. Eva…” the woman held the paper and reviewed it. “A bit young… but..” she glanced up and then nodded. “The best fit for you would be laundry” she spoke and nodded.
“W-what” Eva stared to her. “I’m sorry – Laundry? Doing Laundry?”
“I know it isn’t the first pick of the draft, some one needs to do it.. that’s where you will start” she nodded. “Andrew..” she continued. “You were a guard huh? Perfect then, you will be in the tower” she nodded.. Andrew looked to Eva and then sighed, nodding. “Here you are..” she handed them both another piece of paper. A map of where to go for each job. “Report there at 12 to get the low down of your job, descriptions and such. You first day of work will be tomorrow” she nodded and then pointed to the grocery store down the road. “Breakfast is served everyday for everyone but you will use your ration cards to pick up your groceries for lunch and dinner…” she nodded. “Occasionally we do a big dinner, on events, but you fend for yourself mostly..” she then stepped away…
Eva looked to Andrew for a long moment. “Fucking bull shit. Laundry?” Andrew chuckled “You didn’t even do laundry when we had machines…” “God damnit” she grunted and then walked away. “This is stupid”

“That’s just it, the big picture. Just as you said, everywhere has it’s….problems.” Alya gave a nod, “It just depends on if our problems here are something you would rather have than fending for yourself out there. It isn’t so bad.” She hugged her arms to her body as a cool breeze pushed against her. She watched as the truck started away through the city. “Midnight is an odd hour for a mission, but…” She shook her head, “Anything can happen. If the biters are coming this way, they’ll send a group out to take care of them. New Hope…” Ayla paused and looked to Eva, “It’s a resistance against the Commander and his officers…um…” She looked away then, she knew something, something that she wasn’t saying. “They’ve been having trouble with them.” She gave a nod.
Ayla stood and followed her to the door. She unlocked it and looked to Eva before she followed her inside. She stared to the shadows of the soldiers just beyond the glass as they crouched in the hall. Once they made it down the hallway to her room she unlocked the door, her hand on the knob when Eva posed her question. Ayla gave a soft smile. “It helps me relax…I um…I have a lot of nightmares…” She then gave a nod, “Good night, Eva.” She slipped into her room.
**
Skylar’s eyes fluttered open, her chest ached. She glanced around to find herself in a dimly lit room, to the flicker of a few candles. She went to move only to find that she was bound to a pole, her wrists still zipped together behind her back. She looked down to find they’d taken all of her weapons.
“Lieutenant?” A voice spoke. “Are you awake?”
Skylar looked to see one of her men. Steiner. He was a good recruit; he’d been a policeman before all of this happened. “Steiner…” She breathed, she could taste blood in her mouth. What happened? She couldn’t remember.
“They killed Larson, Jones, Green, and Davies.” Steiner spoke. “I put my gun down…like you said…I listened…” He nodded his head, “Keller hasn’t moved…they hit him pretty hard…what the fuck was the Commander thinking? Sending us out here like this?” He had a cut on his cheek from the butt of a rifle. “Lieutenant, what is wrong with him? I mean…” He shook his head.
Skylar took in a slow breath. The door to the room opened then. She looked up as two men walked into the room. Skylar was roughly untied and forced to her feet. “Walk.” The man shoved her forward. She stumbled and nearly fell as they pushed her through the old home. The windows were all boarded up. As they stepped into another room she was shoved harshly from behind and forced onto her knees.
“That’s quite enough.” Mavis’ voice growled. He stepped forward as the men stepped back from her. He looked down to Skylar for a long moment before he reached and pulled his knife. He stared into her eyes for a moment before he reached forward and held her head against his chest. In the next moment, he cut the ties on her wrists. “It’s good to see you.” He spoke softly.
Skylar’s arms wrapped around him and hugged him close. “Father…” She breathed. “You…I was told you…died…” She shook her head. “H-How?”
Mavis gave a slow nod, “The Commander.” He spoke, his voice angry. “That’s how. I fought back against him, I found out the despicable things he is doing. What he is forcing others to do. Betting on them, like it is a game of chess.” He helped his daughter to her feet. “He’s only gotten worse, Skylar. Don’t you see?”
Skylar looked to her father with a puzzled expression. “You burned…in a fire…he…he told me he saw you….he…how…”
Mavis took a few steps back and leaned against his desk. “He lied, Skylar.” He stared to her, baffled. “Don’t you know about the fights? The bets?”
“Fights?” Skylar shook her head. “The only fights I know of are with New Hope….the people of the town…” She took in a deep breath. “You’re causing them to turn on us…this whole thing…” She rubbed her wrists which had dried blood from the zip ties.
“Look.” Mavis stepped around to his desk and opened a drawer. “We aren’t the problem…” He set an old camcorder down on the desk in front of her. “The Commander. His officers…they are the problem, Skylar. The Commander sent me out on a mission. It was suicide. But, I followed his orders. He learned that I was going to release this tape, to show everyone. To take him out of his position of power. So he got rid of me. They lit the building on fire.” He shook his head. “The same group that he sent you with…. Larson, Jones, Davies…. they were his lackeys. Why do you think they didn’t stop when you told them to stand down? Aren’t you their commanding officer? They didn’t listen to me 5 years ago when we went into the home. They locked me in a room, barricaded the door and lit the home on fire. The mistake they made, they didn’t make sure I was dead.”
Skylar stared to her father, her jaw loose. She looked to the camcorder as he flipped a door open on the side of it. The LCD screen turned on and it chimed as he hit play. Cheering could be heard as the tape began. The Commander could be seen in the middle of a ring. Several soldiers stood at the outside of the ring chanting and cheering. Skylar watched as two civilians were brought into the ring, their heads covered in sacks, their hands bound. The Commander unmasked each person. She stared in disbelief, she remembered these two, they were quoted as missing after they left the walls of the city. They weren’t missing. The Commander knew exactly where they were. Skylar watched as the Commander announced their names and two soldiers cut the ties on their wrists. The fight to the death began then. The Commander stated that whoever killed the other would live. It was horrible. The two cried, they didn’t fight at first. Then, zombies were pushed into the ring, snapping at them. They had to fight them off, the Commander egged them on. Claiming they would release more and more until they were both dead if they didn’t fight. Eventually one man killed the other, blood was everywhere. When the man stood, his chest heaving, his body shaking. The front men in the circle around the ring all took aim at him. The Commander called it out, ‘Now!’ he spoke. The guns fired and bullets ripped through the victor’s body. Skylar took in a shaken breath as her father shut the screen.
“That’s what he’s doing.” Mavis spoke. He watched as a few tears rolled over Skylar’s cheeks. There were only a few good guys left. The rest attended these fights, among other things. The soldiers got what they wanted. No matter what. If a civilian fought back, they were murdered in cold blood. “We are trying to bring light to it, but….” He shook his head. “Every time we get someone inside…we lose them. The Commander kills them.”
Skylar took in quick breaths; she couldn’t believe she’d been supporting this. She told people they were there to help. “We…we’re supposed to help….” She whimpered. “Not…not this…” She shook her head. “H….how?”
**
“Laundry?” Ayla walked up with a smile on her lips. “It’s not that bad.” She chuckled, she looked to Andrew for a moment. “I work in laundry, after all.” She let out a laugh. “I guess I will be seeing you around, huh?” Ayla spoke as she was walking off toward work.
**
Hours later, the sun was beginning to set. The guard in the tower glanced about the landscape. His scope caught something. A limping something. He focused in on it to see a soldier running with much trouble through the wasteland. “The gates!!” He called down, he looked again, looking to the markings on the soldier’s uniform. “It’s Lieutenant Greystoke!” He called.
The two men at the gates began to crank the gates open. A few more soldiers aimed at Skylar as she stumbled into the complex. She fell forward into Alden’s arms as he rushed forward. “Sky…” He spoke. He lifted her into his arms. “Dr. Knightley!” He called out as he rushed her over to a bed.
Dr. Knightley ran to the edge of the bed. “I knew that mission was a mistake…” She shook her head as she looked to Skylar’s bruised jaw, blood on her clothing. Dr. Knightley rolled up her sleeve and pressed the device to Skylar’s arm. She stared to the LCD display, she held her breath, her eyes worried. She let out a heavy breath once is chimed happily. “Thank God…” She muttered. She began checking Skylar over. “What happened to you Lieutenant?” She questioned.
Skylar looked to her with her crystal blue and green marbled eyes. She only shook her head, she was breathless. “Please…” She whispered. She held her hand to her side, blood leaked through her fingers.
Dr. Knightley began working on her. It was a small wound, harmless. “You’re lucky.” She spoke as she cleaned the wound and stitched it up. “You’re really lucky, Lieutenant.” She checked Skylar over some more and then gave a nod. “Take her home for the night, Corporal.”
Alden gave a nod. “Of course.” He scooped Skylar up into his arms and carried her to a small truck which he set her in the passenger seat of before he drove to the Officer’s quarters. He pulled her from the truck and carried her all the way to the 12th floor. Skylar leaned her head against his shoulder, her eyes fluttered. “You almost died…” He whispered. He stopped outside her door and turned her handle. He pushed into the apartment and set her down. “What happened out there?” He asked, he stared up to her.
Skylar shook her head. “I…need to rest…” She pushed him away. “Just…let me…rest…” She groaned as she pushed herself up.
“Sky…” He placed his hand on her forearm, only for her to push him away. He lowered his eyes. “Alright…you know where to find me…if you…need anything…” He stared to her for a long moment before he left the apartment.
Skylar stripped herself of her bloody gear. She took in a shaken breath as she stepped into her shower. She turned the hot water on and allowed the bathroom to gain steam before she finally slipped from the shower and pulled on her pajamas. She sluffed down on the couch then as she traced the bruises on her wrists, the cuts from the zip ties. It was in that moment that she began to sob as everything finally caught up to her…

Eva glanced to Ayla as she stepped up – she had over heard their assignments… Eva grunted and then watched as she stepped away. Andrew stepped up to Eva and crossed his arms. “Listen to me” he spoke with serious eyes. “You are… getting older, stronger, better. But do not forget who you are… and who I am. Your father… I will protect you.” He placed his hand on her shoulder and then smiled. “I love you Eva” he whispered.
There was some kind of chord that struct a terrible dissonance. Eva stumbled back slightly – as if she had never heard those words before. She couldn’t understand why all of a sudden she felt this way… She nodded slowly before Andrew walked away..
At noon Eva stepped infront of a run down building – it was once a laundry mat. Ayla peeked her head around – looking to Eva through the glass window. She waved her in.. Eva slowly stepped in and looked around… four other women stood in the room, folding clothes on a large table.
“Come on, I’ll show you how we run this” she led Eva to a cork board. On the board was several notes – and then a map. It had several stars on the map… a line connecting the stars. “Every morning we have a crew that goes to each main building” he pointed to the stars. “This is where we collect the laundry, every building has one main dump. Depending on the day – and your apartment number, depends when you drop off your laundry. We pick it up, bring it back” she nodded. “Follow me” she waved Eva on.
Eva followed Ayla out the back door, there was a path that led down to a stream. As they came to the stream – she peered to an area that had been dammed off. “We diverted this stream through here…” she pointed. “Using the washing machines would use too much power. So we hand wash clothes” she pointed. “That sectioned off area is soak, You place the clothes in these zipper nets, and toss em out there… pull them in, scrub in this area…” she pointed to an area were metal pans sat. “We pulled the clothes off the line from yesterday and then hang up our new clothes..” she pointed to baskets that sat. “Then we bring it in and fold it. These are done by groups – you can see here. Tags.. The last 2 digits of the apartments”
“Then be put them back in the bags they came in, the apartment number labeled, then they pick it up” she nodded. “We do special requests too, but you gotta pay up you know “she winked “Usually in the form of chocolate bars” she chuckled and then stepped back into the laundrymat. “It sounds stupid… but half of this world is about appearance. If you look dirty, you feel dirty, you act dirty… you have clean clothes .. wlel then” she nodded. “Classy”
“Alright… well see you tomorrow then for your first shift.” She nodded and then walked back to her table. She continued folding clothes…
Eva stepped away and made her way back to her apartment. Her father hadn’t come yet, perhaps they needed him right away… Eva sat down on the couch and placed her feet on the table, relaxing for a moment. She glanced over and picked up an old magazine that was in a stack… A magazine that was 3 years old. “Oprah…” Eva shook her head and then laughed.
Just then she heard a sniffling – a quiet sob from a distance. Eva set down the magazine and slowly approached the door. She opened it and walked into the hallway. Another sniff – Eva stood infront of Skylar’s door now. She heard the crying grow… Eva took in a deep breath and then slowly opened the door, slipping inside.
Eva stood in the doorway for a long moment – eyes staring to Sklar. She was really messed up… Eva looked around the room for a moment, and then stepped over to corner. She grabbed the guitar sitting in the corner and she made her way to the couch, next to Skylar. She pulled the guitar up and strummed it for a moment – then she tuned it quickly. “Before… all of this” she spoke and glanced up. “I was majoring in Music Performance” she laughed and shook her head. She began to strum the guitar – and then she began to sing.
Her voice was often described as angels singing through her… she was a vocalist. She sang a classic – hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. She got about halfway through the song and then stopped. She set the guitar down and took a big sigh – “I guess maybe this whole zombie thing was gods way of saying theres no life in Music Performance” she looked over and then her eyes grew soft. She looked to Skylar and then avoided her eyes – “You alright…? I saw you guys leaving last night, late night mission… Something happen?”

Skylar’s eyes moved to Eva as soon as the door opened. She looked down as Eva came into the room, trying to stifle her cries. She brushed away her tears and hugged her arms to her body, the bruises on her skin stuck out against her fair skin.
“Skylar, you understand?” Mavis spoke, he searched her eyes. “This is the only way you will get back in to the city to end this.” He gave a nod.
In that moment Skylar was grabbed from behind, a bag was thrown over her head and she was tossed into the back of the Humvee that she’d arrived in. A man climbed into the back with her he pulled the bag from her head. “You know, your father told me that this is for the best. But is it? Letting a soldier back into the city? Letting you go?” He spat in her face. Following that he slammed his fist into her. He was angry. “Do you know how many of us have died because of you?! You!” He shook his head. “You’ve led so many attacks on us, and you didn’t even know…did you even care to know the truth?” He asked. “No, you didn’t.” He scoffed.
Skylar lowered her eyes, she deserved it. She blindly followed the Commander. She believed he was doing everything he did for the greater good. Not…for game and sport. “I’m sorry…” She whispered softly.
His hand wrapped around her throat as he slammed her head against the side of the Humvee. “You’re going to be.” He stared into her eyes. “You’re going to die. I told him this was a mistake.” In the next moment Skylar felt a hot pain in her side. He lifted her up by her chest piece and held her up. “Good luck, Skylar.” He spoke as the doors behind her opened. They didn’t slow the truck. He kicked her in her chest and sent her flying out the back of the truck.
Skylar cried out as she fell back, trying to grasp for anything. Her back slammed into the ground and she tumbled, she whimpered as she felt something sharp in her side. Once she stopped rolling from the inertia of her fall she stared up at the sun in the sky, it was setting quickly. She sat up slowly and groaned, she looked down to see a dagger sticking from her side. She shut her eyes and took in a deep breath before she gripped the hilt and ripped it from her side. She placed her hand over it and stood…and then she ran…
Skylar looked to Eva when she finished playing the song. Her voice cut through in her memory. It played over it like a movie to her. She looked away when Eva asked if she was alright. When she asked of the mission. “Those men, that went with me…they are all dead.” She whispered, her voice soft. “Every last one….dead…b-because of that stupid…suicidal mission. We shouldn’t have been out there.” Skylar winced as she pushed herself up. “Eva…” She shook her head and stepped toward her. She froze then. “You need to hide.” She grabbed the guitar and placed it back in the corner. She then quickly ushered Eva into the closet. “Don’t move, and don’t make a sound. Please.” She stared into Eva’s eyes. “Trust me.” She pulled the shudder like doors shut, Eva would be able to see through the cracks. A loud knock came from the door then. Skylar took in a breath, her hand held to her side. The quick movements had torn a few of Dr. Knightley’s stitches. Blood stained into the cotton of her blue tank top. She turned the knob to the door and looked out into the hallway. “Commander.” She spoke, her voice soft.
“Lieutenant.” He stepped into the home and slammed the door shut. He bolted the dead bolt. Skylar took a few steps back from him, pain in her expression. He stared to her. “What is it with you lately, Lieutenant?” He asked. He moved and lifted her riot gear he threw it down onto the ground. “Two missions now. You’ve lost men.”
“Commander….” She made to speak.
His eyes shot to her and he took quick steps to her, He lifted his hand and gripped her jaw. “I’m speaking.” He growled. “Do I need to look at replacing you, Lieutenant? You’ve done so well over the past 10 years, I’m quite surprised. You’re speaking back to me. Fighting with other officers.” He shook his head. “You don’t seem to have your head in the game.” He gripped tightly onto her. He took her and shoved her into her couch, causing her to fall over the edge of it, she let out a whimper as she hit the floor. “You’re just as weak as your father was. That’s why he burned in that building, Lieutenant.” The Commander stared to her as she shakily pulled herself to her feet. “Hmmm you’re quite the fighter though, aren’t you?” He chuckled, a devilish grin on his lips. He stepped to her and stared into her eyes for a long moment. “I expect you in my office at the sound of reveille.” He stood there a moment, a smirk on his lips. “I have another special mission for you.” He chuckled before he turned and left her home.
Skylar collapsed onto her hands and knees then, tears streaming over her cheeks. She gripped onto her side which was bleeding once again.
“This is a reminder, one hour until curfew. No one is allowed outside of their homes without proper permit.” The announcement sounded from the speakers.

Eva glanced up suddenly and then was pushed away into the closet. The closet door shut on her and she grit her teeth slightly. She could see slightly through the slits of the wood… she backed up slightly so that she was hiding in the darkness. Around her were jackets and sweaters, a broom and a few boxes…
She stared to the Commander who stepped in – he had a displeased expression… Eva glanced to the door – he had locked it… why? Eva grit her teeth and then went to open the door – but she didn’t. She watched Skylar be thrown to the ground… When he left Eva flew from the closet, she came to her knees and placed her hand on Skylar’s back. “Skylar, jesus – what the fuck was all that? Who is that ass hole?” she spat and then helped her up to sit on the couch.
Eva got up and made her way to the freezer. She found a ziplock bag and filled it with ice, and then wrapped the bag with a small rag. She then came back to Skylar and set the bag down on the table, she then spot her eyes on a emt medic bag… she stepped over and unzipped it. She dug for a moment and then came back.
“Lift your shirt” Eva spoke and sat down next to her. She looked at the stitches and then sighed. She cleaned up the area and then wrapped her wound. “You got stabbed” she spoke and then glanced up. “Zombies don’t stab” she spoke and then leaned back. “I knew no civilization could be void of corruption… what’s the story, what are they doing – and why are they targeting you? A midnight mission? You insane? They are trying to kill you, or at least he is..” she spoke and then glanced to the door…

Skylar winced when Eva helped her to the couch. She grit her teeth and leaned her head back against the couch. “A zombie didn’t stab me.” She whispered. “The mission I was sent on, it was suicide. I was supposed to die.” She took in a slow breath. “I talk back, I fight for what’s right.” She groaned as Eva fixed up the wound. “I wanted to believe that everything that is being done is for the better, to help you, to help anyone else who lives here.” She then shook her head, “I’m an idiot. That’s what I am.” She looked to Eva then. “The Commander, that’s who that man is. He is the Commander, the head honcho of this place, our leader. He’s all that’s left. For the first few years we hoped for someone to come rescue us from this nightmare of a place. But, when that didn’t happen we fortified this place more than it already was….we placed rules. I helped…” She shook her head. “I’ve helped him all along the way….for what?” She brushed a few tears away. “He was trying to kill me….he tried to kill my father too…” She looked away then.
“Last night I was sent to kill the leader of the rebellion group called New Hope…they’ve been giving us trouble. Now I know it is for good reason…the Commander is a pig….” She shook her head. “They get what they want when they want it. I’m the only officer sent on dangerous missions, among a few other soldiers…the ones they know would fight back. The ones that are still good…” She paused for a long moment, looking to the blood on her stomach as it pooled around the stitches. “I found my father last night, a man that I was told was killed in the line of action, burned in an accident. That it turns out was lit by three of the men that traveled with me last night….my father had footage of the barbaric things that are being done here…” She shook her head. “It’s all the Commander, he is causing this…he is letting this be okay…” She grit her teeth, she was visibly in pain. “He takes innocent civilians and pits them against each other…in a fight to the death…and then they kill the victor. And if they don’t fight, he throws zombies into the mix. How fucked up is that, Eva?” She fought back tears then. “How could anyone do that? For….for fun? They bet on this shit.” She gripped her side, blood covered her fingers.
Skylar pushed herself to her feet. She stumbled forward to a chest that sat on her floor. She opened it and looked down to the assortment of guns and ammunition. “I…I have enough…to get by.” She spoke softly. She looked to Eva, “You and your father should get out of here…” She nodded. “Before anything happens.” She shut the chest and stumbled. She leaned against the wall, she was dizzy from her loss of blood. “I don’t know what else he is capable of.” She whispered as she slid down the wall, she squeezed her eyes shut, trying to gain control. She pushed herself up and stumbled, she fell forward and grasped onto Eva’s arms, her face against Eva’s shoulder. “I’m…I’m sorry..” She stuttered, “Eva…” She whispered and slipped from her to the couch where she slumped down. “I’m…I’m very tired…” She spoke, her voice lost as her vision began to fade, her eyes fluttered.

Eva stood up suddenly as Skylar stumbled to her knees. She moved Skylar so that she was leaning against the couch. Eva stared to Skylar for a long moment as her eyes fluttered… she could see Skylar’s muscles twitching, her body entering a state of pure exhaustion… Eva stood and walked out of the bedroom and into her own apartment.
Andrew looked up to and smiled as she entered. “How was your orientation?” he questioned and stepped over to her.
“It was…. Fine. Come with me… Skylar needs help” she waved him and over and led him to Skylar’s room. “Last night they sent her on a crazy mission… she got hurt really bad. Help me carry her to our apartment?” she leaned down. Andrew leaned down and picked her up with one swift motion and carried her to their apartment.
“Why doesn’t she go see the doctor?” Andrew questioned as he set her down on the couch.
“Well… this place isn’t the shiny golden place it seems… of course. It holds up pretty well but theres a bit of shady shit going on.. The commander hosts fight rings where the people bet on the victims that fight each other, or zombies… Other than that he also runs with an iron fist. There is a group called New Hope that are rising against. Skylar here was sent on a suicide mission last night, because shes one of the last good guys that might fight back… well, she survived. Who knows who is on the commanders side?” Eva sat down on the coffee table and sighed.
“How did you find all of this out?”
“Last night I watched them leave, around 12pm. I was on the roof with the sniper – just watching. Then I came back and heard her crying. She shoved me in the closet when the commander came in giving her orders, I watched him.. he was so forceful, and cruel. His intentions were evident…” Eva stood and then walked to the kitchen. She fumbled with some cans and began to heat up some beans, rice and veggies.
“I wanted to bring her over, watch her, and hopefully she can get some rest. If anyone comes looking for her – she wont be in her room, they might think she was off doing something else… but she hasn’t slept at all” Eva spoke and brought in three bowls of food. She handed a bowl to Andrew and sat back down on the coffee table. Her eyes looked over Skylar, her expression growing soft.
“She seems different…” Andrew spoke and spooned at his food. “Its rare but there are good people out there these days… they just get trapped in positions like these…” he paused and spooned more into his mouth. “You know if we don’t help her – she will die” he spoke and looked to her. “It sounds like they have put a target on her head. You don’t want to stay here – we don’t have to. If we leave, we are taking her..” he nodded. “she knows what she’s doing, she is kind, and can provide”
“You want to create a group again?” Eva spoke, glancing up to him.
“Don’t you?”
“I guess… I’m just scared of losing my family again” Eva whispered.
“Yeah, but whats the point of living if you’re not willing to form a relationship with anyone? We are social creatures, you can’t keep living with just me. We need people, for survival, for happiness. We need a reason to live. Our reason would be… wake up – provide protection, provide food, make someone smile, conjure up some fun in this world of terror” he spoke and then sighed. “We lost our family because we got careless, reckless, we got comfortable.. I wont let us make that mistake again..” he spoke and then finished his bowl.
“Yeah” Eva whispered and set her bowl down, It still had food in it.

Skylar tried to fight it. She tried to keep her consciousness. When Eva left her world disappeared into a black hole. She could hear Eva and Andrew talking the heavy thud of their shoes in the room seemed to echo over and over. When he scooped her up, her eyes fluttered as she tried to move, her muscles fought back against her though and as she was set down in Eva and Andrew’s apartment she slipped away once more.
“Lieutenant!” The voice yelled. “Lieutenant come on!” Gun shots fired in the background. Skylar stood, staring at the bodies of her dead soldiers. She was frozen. She stared at the zombies that moved toward her, she couldn’t move. This was the previous mission she’d been on, with Alden. She’d lost four men. All because of the Commander. He meant for them to die. They hadn’t even caught eye of any New Hope members. Skylar stared then, just as Alden grabbed her from behind and ripped her back, his gun fired off into the horde. “Let’s go!” He called to her. She caught a glimpse of someone, in a black uniform. It looked much like the riot gear that she wore.
That night, it had to be the team that tried to kill her father, doing the dirty work for the Commander once again.
“Lieutenant!!!” Alden slammed her against a wall, his back pressed against her as he fought off a few zombies, his dagger sliced into the skull of one. Blood splattered across her goggles. “Get it together.” He turned and gripped onto her chest piece. “You need to run!” He shoved her forward, pushing for her to run. That night was one of the worst nights in her memory. She hadn’t ever felt like that. She had been in sticky situations, yes, but not like that…
Skylar’s brows furrowed in her sleep, she mumbled incoherently. Her eyes fluttered and her muscles twitched. She had dreams of a soldier that had dealt with horrible things. In her sleep, she was reminded of the poor souls she’d killed over the years. The night pushed along until the early hours of the morning. A thud sounded from down the hallway. Skylar sat up, her eyes wide, she took in quick breaths. She glanced around quickly, confused of her surroundings. She drew her brows together when she heard another knock, a yell, and then a shrill scream. Skylar bolted from the room. She rounded a corner and slammed into the back of a soldier. The two tumbled to the ground. Skylar looked down to him, her eyes full of confusion.
“Let me go!”
Skylar looked up to see Ayla slammed against a wall. She scrambled to her feet. “Wait!” She called and rushed forward. “What’s going on?” She questioned as she looked to Ayla, she had a bloody nose. She’d put up a fight against them. “Where are you taking her?”
“You ought to mind your own business, Lieutenant.” A soldier spoke, the Brigadier General. He stepped forward to her. “This criminal has been found guilty of helping the resistance.”
Skylar looked to Ayla who was sobbing. She knew better. She knew this wasn’t right. “You must be mistaken.” She spoke and looked back to him.
“Oh?” He asked as he pulled a key ring from his pocket. “She seems to have an awful lot of keys for a civilian.”
Skylar stared to the silver key with the letter R etched into it. The ‘R’ stood for roof. It was her key. Her stomach churned into knots. “Of course.” She spoke softly. She looked to Ayla as they shoved her down the hall. She then looked to the Brigadier General and gave a nod. “My apologies, Sir. It won’t happen again.”
He looked her over and then let out a chuckle. “It certainly won’t.” He spoke before he turned and left down the hall to catch up to the other soldiers.
Skylar leaned against the wall, gripping her side. “Fuck…” She muttered under her breath. She turned and moved down the hallway, she leaned against the wall about halfway down. She groaned and shut her eyes tight for a moment. “Come on.” She whispered to herself. “Come on.” She repeated. Skylar pushed off the wall and stumbled to her home. She pushed into the room and fell forward, knocking over her lamp which landed in a loud crash as the bulb broke. Skylar stayed still for a long moment, her heart was pounding in her ears. She knew where they were taking Ayla. The fights. That’s why the Commander needed her. He was going to run a fight ring…
Skylar pushed herself to her feet and moved to her kitchen where she pulled an orange bottle from a behind a tile in the wall. She popped a few pills in her mouth before she moved to her bedroom. She pulled on a fresh set of clothing and riot gear. She clipped her helmet to her hip and threw her rifle over her shoulder. Skylar stepped to her door that was wide open, she stared to the doorway across the hall, Eva and Andrew’s home. She pushed open the cracked door and stepped inside. Her breaths were heavy as she sat down on the couch. She looked to Eva, and then to Andrew. “They took my friend…” She spoke softly. “They took Ayla…I can’t let this happen…” She shook her head. She stared to the floor as she thought of a way to get Ayla back. “The fight…the stupid fights…” She was on the edge of tears; it was hard to tell if it was from emotion or from the sheer pain her body was in. She looked to Andrew and Eva and gave a nod. “I have weapons…a lot of them…and ammunition…I can get us out of here…would you help me get Ayla free?”

Eva stood up quickly and rushed behind Skylar. She glanced over Skylar’s shoulder, her eyes prying on Ayla. She grit her teeth and went to rush forward – but was yanked back by Andrew. She turned around and stared to him, her eye brows furrowed together.
“Don’t risk it” he spoke and then glanced to Skylar who walked back in the room now.
“No one is a civilian anymore, no one gets that luxury…” Eva spoke and then placed her hand on the hilt of her knife, that rest of her hip. “We get her back, we get you – and we get the hell out of this place.” She glanced to Andrew. He stood uncomfortably and then scratched the back of his neck slightly…
“Alright…” he spoke and then sighed. “I highly doubt they’re going to let us leave anyways…” he spoke and then stepped over to his bag. He began to pack their things. He stuffed his bag with food, and other supplies.
Eva looked to Skylar and then lifted up two smoke grenades from her bag. “These are my last two… you tell me the plan, and we will follow it. Are they taking her to that Arena? What are the forces like, what are we expecting?" she spoke as she followed Skylar into her room. She glanced to the riot gear that rest in a pile, as Skylar handed her the gear - she began putting it on. Andrew followed in and put on his own gear.
Andrew looked to Eva and Skylar and then nodded. "I'll prep the jeep... tell me where to have it, I'll meet you when you are ready. I saw an area around back - they used wooden pallets to patch a wall, I can bust through there.." he spoke and then held the riot helmet in his hands. "I could create a diversion - light part of the wall on the quiet side on fire, or cause an explosion, something..?"

Skylar took in a slow breath as she listened to them. She moved to a chest and opened it, it was packed full of guns and ammunition, she’d been collecting things over the years. “I have more smoke grenades.” She spoke as she pulled a shoe box out and looked to Eva. Skylar then shook her head. “My father…” She grit her teeth slightly as she pulled a cross bow from the box, she’d always loved cross bows. Silence was the key in this world now. She handed the bow to Eva and then looked to Andrew. “I don’t want you getting caught.” She shook her head. She then pulled a map of the city from a file. “This area, this is where the arena is that my father told me of. It’s where they take civilians to fight to their death…” She looked to her watch, her breath seemed to catch in her chest.
“I don’t have much time.” She looked to Eva. “Get as much of this gear as you can to your jeep.” She gave a nod, “I have to meet with the Commander, remember? I can’t miss it.” She shook her head then, she didn’t want to know why he was calling her to his office. “Eva…” She stared into Eva’s eyes for a long moment, memories of her other life flashed before her eyes. She shook her head, “I will meet you here.” She pointed to a place on the map. “It’s an abandoned building, I have the key.” She pulled a ring from her back pocket and pulled the key from the ring. “Go inside and up to the third floor. I’ve cleared it, it should be safe.” She nodded, “Andrew…once you two have the jeep loaded up and ready to go, take it here.” She pointed on the map, it was behind the abandoned building. The trumpets sounded over the microphones then. “I…” Skylar furrowed her brows slightly, she grabbed a radio and punched several buttons on it before she did the same with two other radios. She handed one to Eva and another to Andrew before she clipped the final radio to her belt. “That’s as good as it gets.” She spoke. “I’ll see you soon.” She gave a nod before she rushed from her room.
Skylar rushed through the halls and down the stairs, she rounded a few corners before she made her way to the Commander’s office. She placed her hand over the door knob for a moment before she turned it and pressed inside. “You’re late, Lieutenant.” The Commander spoke. He sat at his desk, a pen in his hand as he wrote in a notebook. He looked up to her with a smirk on his lips. “Come.” He stood and moved around the desk, he pulled a chair out, “Sit.” He gave a nod. Skylar hesitated for a moment before she stepped forward and sat down in the chair. “Good.” He stepped back around to his side of the desk. “So tell me, Lieutenant Greystoke. What happened out there?” He looked up to her with his cold eyes. It was in that moment that Skylar realized who this man was. It was Elias. She was lost in her memories, when he’d kidnapped her and tortured her. It all made sense. “Lieutenant?” He slapped the desk before her.
Skylar found that she’d been staring at his notebook. The names of people were written down on the notebook. The last name on the list Ayla Sarálonde. “It was pure suicide.” She reached forward toward the notebook.
The Commander gripped her hand and stared into her eyes. “Was it?” He questioned. “Or are you just losing your edge?” His grip on her was hard.
“They knew we were coming.” Skylar spoke back, not missing a beat. “They surrounded us, had us disarmed in seconds.”
“Oh, and how lucky are you to have escaped?” He stood and moved around the desk to her. He gripped her chest piece and pulled her up to his level. Her toes barely grazed the floor. “Quite a feat, isn’t it?” He breathed.
Skylar struggled against him. “They left me for dead.” She gripped onto his arm at a pressure point, this caused him to release her. Skylar fell to the floor and stumbled back from him. “Commander you are out of line.” She warned.
“Oh?” He raised his brows, “And how do you think this?” He asked.
“Where is it that you’ve taken Ayla Sarálonde from 1222?” Skylar glared to him now, she stood, ready for him to attack.
The Commander chuckled then he smirked, “The same place I intend on taking you, Skylar.” He took a step forward.
Skylar took a step back. “Where is that?” She questioned.
“You’ll see.” The Commander rushed her then, he gripped her wrists and slammed her harshly against the wall. He was much bigger than her, he overpowered her. “It’s sad really.” He spoke, his face close to hers. “I really wanted to keep you.” He searched her eyes, “But, you’ve managed to get a few of my best men killed.” He shook his head. He ran his fingertip down the side of her face.
Skylar turned her head away when he leaned forward to kiss her. She brought her knee up into his groin. This caused him to stumbled back. Skylar reached for her rifle. She slipped it around in a swift motion. The Commander rushed forward. He gripped the muzzle of the rifle and grabbed at the butt of the gun. He slammed it against her neck. “Stop fighting this!” He snarled, his voice full of irritation. He pressed hard against her and chuckled as her face began to turn beat red. Skylar fought against him at first, but she began to loosen, her eyes began to flutter. She was weak from her injuries. This was not a fight that she could win. The Commander ripped the gun from her grip and slammed the butt of the rifle into her ribs. This caused her to buckle forward. He chuckled and tossed the gun to the side. “How is it that you survive out there?” He gripped her jaw. “When you’re so weak?” He shoved her back against the wall then.
Skylar gasped for air, tears welled in her eyes. She let her head lean forward loosely as he pulled her pistol from her thigh. He tossed that to the floor as well. She waited for him to turn his head, when he wasn’t looking she slipped her dagger from her left thigh. She then moved quickly, she sliced into his shoulder. He let out a yell. Skylar was slammed harshly to the ground. She was pinned beneath him as he let out a few hard hooks to her body. Skylar gripped the dagger and ripped it from his flesh. She sliced into his forearm and rolled him off of her before she scrambled to her feet and kicked him in the side. She slipped the radio from her hip. “Run!” She called into it. “Get out of the city n--…!” She screamed as the Commander slammed against her tackling her onto the floor. Her fingers released the trigger of the radio as she slammed against the cold tile. He slammed his elbow into the side of her head harshly willing her unconscious.
The Commander sat there, he looked to the radio that was held loosely in her hand. He lifted it and pressed the trigger on the side. “Whoever this is, I would heed Skylar’s warning, she’s dead.” He spoke into the mic before he slammed the radio into the ground, damaging it. He clipped it to Skylar’s hip before he lifted her limp body. Blood leaked from her nose, draining onto the tile. He tossed her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes and carried her into the hallway. He paused in front of a soldier and gave a nod. “Put her downstairs, I’ll deal with her soon enough.” He smirked. “Tonight’s going to be a lot of fun.”
**
Alden stared at the scene from the end of the hallway. His eyes wide. He looked around to see if anyone else saw the Commander handing Skylar off like a rag doll. He rushed up the stairs of the building and rounded a corner, running toward Skylar’s room. He rushed into the room and pushed her door open to find the empty room. He saw the map and looked it over, a few places were marked, among those places was the abandoned building. He’d helped her clear it. Alden took in a breath, “What were you doing?” He questioned out loud. “What did you do to make the Commander act like that?” He wondered. He then shook his head and took off from the room, hoping he would find something in one of the locations that Skylar had marked on the map.
**
Ayla paced back and forth, her arms hugged her body. She shivered, as she looked to the soldier that guarded her. “I didn’t do anything that they said…” She spoke, “I was given the key…I promise, as the Lieutenant, she gave it to me…” Ayla looked to the door as it was flung open. A soldier carried Skylar on his back, her face was smeared in blood now. “Sky!” She called and rushed forward. She gripped onto the bars of the cell.
“Get back!” The soldier that stood watch over her yelled. In the next moment, he jabbed a Taser stick through the bars. Ayla let out a cry and collapsed as the volts raced through her body, she convulsed and clenched her jaw. The soldier chuckled as he poked her again, causing her to whimper. They were cruel. More than Skylar ever knew. She’d never seen this side of things. It was horrifying what they did.

Eva nodded to Skylar and took the radio, she slipped it onto her belt. Eva glanced into the chest and pulled out a baseball bag and began to fill it with the weapons. She filled a backpack with ammo and other supplies. Eva then sifted through the kitchen and grabbed all the knives, and then she found something special. She lifted up a bottle and glanced into it – it had a small filter in it. She grinned and put the bottle in her bookbag and then continued filling it with canned goods. They made two trips down to the jeep. It filled the trunk space quickly, and their bookbags would rest at their feet…
Soon enough they climbed into the jeep and they started out. They drove to the location that Skylar told them to be ready… Eva sat in the passengers seat and held her silenced pistol in her hand. Her eyes glanced around as they sat. Andrew had a pair of binoculars on – glancing out and around. Their escape route was clear…
Eva perked her head up when she saw something coming. She slipped her gun into her holster and hung her head out of the jeep, waving slightly. She watched the figure run up and then stop – he was familiar… that guy. Alden took in a breath, his breathing was labored – “What are you guys planning?” he questioned as he glanced to the building they sat in front of.
Eva glanced to Andrew, there was a long pause. “Listen – Skylar is in trouble, I know it. I think there’s more to the commander than I thought – whats the plan?”
Eva let out a sigh and nodded “They have Ayla, Skylar thinks they’re taking her to fight in a pit, against other humans, against zombies. They make bets… she had to respond to the commander, she intended to find out where this Arena is.. so we can put an end to this” she spoke and glanced to the empty building for a moment.
Alden grit his teeth “Well, the commander has been having it out with Skylar, I don’t know why. He wants her dead, I saw him earlier – jerking her around, hitting her, we can’t sit and wait, I don’t think she will make it through” he spoke and then stepped towards the jeep. “I was sniffing their trail the other day, they randomly took one of the civilians – accusing them of stealing rations. I knew this was not true… I saw the truck driving off with him, not far from here..” he spoke and then climbed into the back of the jeep.
The jeep started and they bounded forward – directions lead by Alden. They drove off into the quiet abandoned section of the city, basically a few blocks from their spot. “Look – oil spots” he pointed to a building. There was fresh tracks.. they turned around the corner and there were 6 cars parked. “This is it, those are our vans” he spoke and jumped out of the car.
Eva tossed Alden an assault rifle and then jumped out herself. She looked to Andrew and then nodded. “You stay – be ready to drive this thing out of here” she spoke. Andrew glanced to Alden, and then nodded. She could tell he didn’t want to, but some one had to. This was Eva’s idea in the long run, that is what she would say…
Eva followed Alden who led her towards the building. She held her pistol in her hand… they opened the door and slipped inside easily. Alden led her forward – all was quiet at the entrance. As they rounded the corner they heard some thundering noise. It was coming from below… Alden glanced to Eva for a moment and then nodded. “The basement…” he spoke and then they continued along until they found a stairwell.
When the opened the door – a man stood directly there. As Eva approached – her radio blared. “RUN!!!” The man turned around instantly. Eva gasped and then leaped forward, bashing the barrel of her gun into his head. The man fell over and tumbled down a series of steps until he slammed against the wall.
“…she’s dead” her radio spoke, it was the commander. Eva shook her head “I wont believe it until I see it” she spoke and then glanced to Alden. Alden nodded and then held his gun upward.
“All the noise – more will come” he spoke and then they rushed down the stairs…

Skylar’s eyes fluttered, she could feel her arms being tugged at, then her legs. The sound of her chest piece clicking out of place filled her ears. The words that she could hear spoken were muddy, she couldn’t make anything out. She blinked a few times and felt a tight hold on her jaw as she looked up to a fuzzy figure. “She’s awake.” The voice spoke, close to her face.
“Good. I’ll go get the Commander.” Another voice, it sounded like a whisper, though, Skylar knew it was just steps away from her.
She tried to move, her wrists were bound together with a rope. She was sitting in a chair; the rope ran up toward the ceiling. Skylar glanced around the nearly empty room. She could taste her own blood in her mouth from the harsh blow that the Commander had dealt. The door slammed open, the sound seemed to echo through the room. Skylar felt as though she’d been drugged. She looked up to the Commander as he stepped into the room. “You’re not so tough after all, are you?” He stepped forward and gripped her jaw, a grin on his lips. “I need you to put on a show for me, a good one. Maybe, I’ll let you live.” He snickered.
Skylar’s head fell limply forward. She looked down to herself. They’d stripped all her riot gear from her body. She was left in a pair of black sports leggings and a sports bra. They’d taken everything.
“What’s wrong? Feeling a bit groggy?” The Commander chuckled, “I gave you a pretty good concoction.” He shrugged as he gripped the rope that ran toward the ceiling. “Let’s begin, shall we?” He leaned forward and stared into her eyes for a long moment. “How did Ayla get your key?”
Skylar stared to him, “I gave it to her.”
“Well this is going to be all too easy, isn’t it?” He smirked, “Why?”
“I trust her, she’s my friend. She needed a place to go, to relax, to get away from all of this.”
The Commander pulled at the rope once she’d finished speaking. It lifted her hands upward. “I’m afraid that isn’t the response I am looking for.” He spoke as he wrapped the rope around a device and began to crank it. Skylar lifted upward from the chair. She let out quick breaths as she fought against the rope. He continued to crank until her toes could barely touch the floor. “Tell me, who in New Hope do you have contact with?”
“No one.” Skylar spoke, her shoulders were sore, the stitches in her side tore open and blood leaked from the wound.
“Wrong.” The Commander brought his fists into her several times, hooking into her ribs, he jabbed into her face. “Tell me.” He growled. “Where are they hiding?”
“I don’t know!” Skylar cried out. “They placed a hood over my head when they took me! When they ambushed us!”
The Commander gripped her and pulled her down, pulling harshly against her arms. “I can do this all day, Skylar.” He spoke as he stared into her eyes. “Tell me who you’ve befriended, and then tell me how to get to them, this will all stop. I’ll even let you go.”
Skylar whimpered as he released her, her head hung forward, bruises appeared on her body as she looked downward. “I’m telling you the truth. Until that mission I believed you, I believed my father was dead. Until that mission I believed everything you told me, Commander.” She looked up then, her eyes full of anger. “Those men, they died because of you. You sent us out there, without a plan, without a care. You meant for me to die, like my father. But he got away.” She said through grit teeth.
The Commander chuckled then. “That’s what I was looking for.” He lifted a bat and swung. It cracked as it slammed into Skylar’s thigh. She let out a painfilled scream. He grinned to her wickedly. “Tell me, did they ask you to kill me?” He questioned. He gripped her jaw, his breath was hot against her skin. “Like the cowards that they are? Did they expect you to do their dirty deed?” He licked his lips, “Because, so far, you’re failing at that, Skylar.”
He continued until everything faded to black, until her body was in pain. Until she didn’t cry anymore. He injected her with a serum, claiming it would aid her in regaining her strength for what was to come…The world was lost from existence for hours it seemed.
**
It took several hours before Skylar finally came to. She was laying on the floor, her hands bound. It seemed as though as soon as she began to stir she was grabbed roughly and forced to her feet. She let out a whimper, her thigh felt as though it was on fire. Skylar was shoved forward. The sound of a crowd filled her ears. Skylar looked around the basement, several of the officers stood around, as well as many of the other soldiers. At least 20 were in the room. She was shoved down to her knees then by the Commander whom grabbed the back of her hair. He chuckled as he looked around to the surprised faces of the crowd. “Don’t look at her as an alley anymore, gentlemen. Skylar broke many rules. She’s working with New Hope, she’s working against us. All of the recent attacks? She knew everything about them.” He shoved her forward harshly and stood on her back as he roughly ripped a blade through the rope on her wrists. “Who better for her to fight than one of the rats that have helped her along the way?” He spoke.
“Sky!” Ayla’s voice cried out as she was shoved down next to Skylar. Ayla stared to her as a soldier stood with his foot on her back, much as the Commander held Skylar down.
“Ayla…” Skylar whispered softly. She stared into her eyes. “I’m sorry…”
“No, Sky…” Ayla spoke as they were lifted to their feet.
“Ladies and Gentlemen.” The Commander spoke. “I give you former Lieutenant Skylar Greystoke and Ayla Sarálonde.” Soldiers held both of them, they faced each other the Commander in the middle. “Ladies.” He smirked, “This is a fight to the death. Whomever survives, will win. So don’t hold back.” He stepped away as the crowd began to cheer.
Skylar was shoved forward into Ayla. She gripped onto Ayla, keeping her on her feet. “It doesn’t matter who wins, we both die.” She spoke. “We stick together, okay?” She gave a nod.
“Fight!” The Commander called. “Release a few zombies.” He spoke.
A few zombies were then thrown into the ring that Skylar and Ayla stood in. “Just fight, Ayla.” Skylar spoke as she rushed forward she grabbed a dagger from the floor and shoved it upward through the jaw of a zombie. She then spun around and jabbed the dagger into the socket of another. She continued until the bodies lay around her. She then looked to Ayla whom stood with a sword, blood dripped from the blade.
“Fight or we will kill both of you!” The Commander ordered.
Skylar looked to him. “And what pleasure does that give you?” She spat blood into the crowd.
The Commander chuckled then. “Release more.” He spoke, “Overrun them.” He stood, his eyes staring down. “More pleasure than you’ll ever know.” He snickered.
Skylar spun around as Zombies were released from their cages into the ring. “You’ve got this Ayla.” She spoke as she rushed forward and began fighting against the zombies, there were too many…too fast…Skylar turned and ripped one away from Ayla, she slammed it to the ground before she rushed another. “Come on!” She screamed as they fought them. “Come and get me!” She sliced though one as Ayla fought others behind her. Suddenly she was forced to the ground by one. Skylar fought against it, she writhed on the ground, trying to get her bearing. She pushed as hard as she could, trying to get it off of her…

Eva and Alden came down the stairs. It was sudden that the door flung open and three men came in. “Did you hear that?” they spoke. They climbed up a few steps when suddenly Alden jumped downward – his feet pummeling into one man’s chest. He stabbed him quickly with his knife, as he stood up the other two men fell to the ground. Two silences gun shots had gone off, the clinking of two bullets hit the ground. Right between their eyes a hole had filed its way through their skull, blood splattered against the wall at the exit wound…
Eva lowered her gun and followed Alden. They stepped into a large room that was full of people. Her eyes glanced around – everyone was armed. In the center of the room was some sort of pit, surrounded by a fence. People shouted and hollered. Eva lowered her head and they walked up to the fence – they squeezed in next to other people.
Eva stared down to Skylar and Ayla who were fighting against zombies. “Damnit” Eva muttered. The man next to her laughed and hollered. “I’m rooting for the little one, she’s cute!” he then whistled loudly. Eva glanced to Alden, who was biting his lower lip harshly. How were they doing to manage this?
“The commander” Eva whispered. “We take him out and the whole place goes off balance. It’ll give us a few minutes to get the girls and run like hell” she spoke and then she reached for her pistol.
“I’ll go after him.. you have to save them. You gotta get in that rink..” he spoke and then handed her the assault rifle. He pulled his pistol and then nodded. “You’ll cause a commotion, and that will cause the commander to show himself” he spoke and then slipped off.
Eva stared to the fencing, looking for a weak area. She glanced down and saw the gate… She squeezed through the people and pulled the gun up slightly. Suddenly a barrage of bullets came from her gun – it broke the chain that held the fence together. With a swift kick she sent the gate flying to the side. Everyone suddenly starting screaming and moving around - the place went crazy.
Eva dashed into the ring and held he gun up – a wave of zombies fell to the ground with her bullets. She ran over to Skylar and tossed her a pistol, her arm grabbed Ayla and she pulled her up. “Lets go!” she shouted and held the gun up – popping at more zombies…
